Abstract
Widespread pain (WP) is associated with reduced function and disability. Importantly, three-fourths of the approximately 42% of U.S. adults with obesity have WP. Moreover, rates of adult obesity are higher, and WP outcomes are worse in racialized non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic/Latino/a/X groups, potentially exacerbating existing pain disparities. Bariatric surgery significantly reduces weight and improves pain. However, recurrent or unresolved pain after bariatric surgery can hinder weight loss or facilitate weight regain. The current study conducted a secondary analysis of a longitudinal study of predictors and mechanisms of weight loss after bariatric surgery to examine the point prevalence of WP and pain trajectories 24 months post surgery. Our secondary aim was to examine the association between weight loss and pain characteristics. Our exploratory aim was to longitudinally examine racial differences in pain trajectories after bariatric surgery. Our results showed that point prevalence decreased after bariatric surgery. Additionally, significant improvements in pain trajectories occurred within the first 3 months post surgery with a pattern of pain reemergence beginning at 12 months post surgery. Hispanic/Latino/a/X participants reported a higher number of painful anatomical sites before bariatric surgery, and the rate of change in this domain for this group was faster compared with the racialized non-Hispanic Black participants. These findings suggest that pain improvements are most evident during the early stages of surgical weight loss in racialized populations of adults with WP. Thus, clinicians should routinely monitor patients' weight changes after bariatric surgery as they are likely to correspond to changes in their pain experiences. PERSPECTIVE: This article presents the prevalence and pain trajectories of racialized adults with WP after surgical weight loss. Clinicians should evaluate changes in the magnitude and spatial distribution of pain after significant weight change in these populations so that pain interventions can be prescribed with greater precision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies confirmed a link between urinary metals/metalloids and obesity; however, the majority of these studies defined obesity using body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC), and their results were not constantly consistent. Studies defining obesity based on body fat percentage (BFP) is less reported. METHODS A total of 5405 participants aged 35-74 from Guangxi Zhuang ethnic group in China were included in the analysis. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to detect the concentrations of 22 metals/metalloids in urine. Using a binary logistic regression model, the impact of individual metal/metalloid on the risk of BFP/obesity was analyzed, and the LASSO regression model was employed to choose metals/metalloids independently related with BFP/obesity to construct a multiple-metal models. The quantile g-computation model was used to evaluate the combined impacts of metals/metalloids on BFP/obesity. RESULTS In multiple-metal models, compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of urinary concentrations of Mg, Cd, and Ti was significantly associated with a reduced risk of BFP/obesity (Mg: OR=0.66, 95 %CI: 0.51, 0.85; Cd: OR=0.63, 95 %CI: 0.49, 0.82; Ti: OR=0.73, 95 %CI: 0.57, 0.93). Conversely, the highest quartiles of urinary concentrations of Zn, V, and Sb was significantly associated with an increased risk of BFP/obesity (Zn: OR=1.75, 95 %CI: 1.39, 2.22; V: OR=1.63, 95 %CI: 1.25, 2.14; Sb: OR=1.38, 95 %CI: 1.06, 1.79). In quantile g-computation analysis, Mg, Cd, and Sn were the main contributors to negative effects, while Zn, V, and Sb were the main contributors to positive effect, although no significant relationship was observed between the multiple metal/metalloid mixtures and BFP/obesity. CONCLUSIONS According to our study, urinary Mg, Cd, and Ti levels were negatively associated with BFP/obesity risk, and Zn, V, and Sb levels were positively associated with BFP/obesity risk. However, these associations need to be further verified by longitudinal studies, and the molecular mechanisms need to be further explored by animal and cell experiments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Obesity has known to be a modifiable risk factor associated with worse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD), but few studies have examined the impact of obesity on CKD incidence in the general population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) as predictors of incident CKD and to evaluate the impact of weight reduction on CKD prevention. METHODS A total of 2,711 participants from a community-based cohort with normal renal function were prospectively analyzed. Among participants with obesity, we analyzed the change in WHR to evaluate the association of obesity reduction with CKD development. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 11.03 ± 4.22 years, incident CKD occurred in 190 (7.0%) participants. In the fully adjusted multivariable Cox proportional hazard models, the risk of incident CKD increased with higher BMI (hazard ratio, 1.06; 95% confidence interval, 1.00-1.11; p = 0.033) and higher WHR (hazard ratio, 1.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.07-1.66; p = 0.009). In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, cumulative adverse renal events were significantly more common in the maintained obesity group than in the reduced obesity group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Both higher BMI and WHR were associated with development of CKD, but the magnitude of the effect of WHR was higher than that of BMI. Moreover, reducing obesity would be beneficial for renal prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Measuring obesity is crucial for assessing health risks and developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. The most common methods used to measure obesity include BMI, waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio. This study aimed to determine the metabolic signatures associated with each measure of obesity in the Qatari population. METHODS Metabolomics profiling was conducted to identify, quantify, and characterize metabolites in serum samples from the study participants. Inverse rank normalization, principal component analysis, and orthogonal partial least square-discriminant analysis were used to analyze the metabolomics data. RESULTS This study revealed significant differences in metabolites associated with obesity based on different measurements. In men, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine metabolites were significantly enriched in individuals classified as having obesity based on the waist-hip ratio. In women, significant changes were observed in leucine, isoleucine, and valine metabolism metabolites. Unique metabolites were found in the different categorization groups that could serve as biomarkers for assessing many obesity-related disorders. CONCLUSIONS This study identified unique metabolic signatures associated with obesity based on different measurements in the Qatari population. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular pathways involved in obesity and may have implications for developing personalized prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract
Background Overweight and obesity now affect more than a third of the world's population. They are strongly associated with somatic diseases, in particular increasing the risk of many metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, but also with mental disorders. In particular, there is a strong association between obesity and depression. As a result, more attention is paid to the neurobiological, behavioural, and psychological mechanisms involved in eating. One of these is food addiction (FA). Research comparing lifestyle elements, physical and mental health problems of excess body weight and individuals with FA is limited and has focused on younger people, mainly students. There is also a lack of studies that relate actual metabolic parameters to FA. To better understand the problem of FA also in older adults, it is important to understand the specific relationships between these variables. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 172 adults with overweight and obesity (82% female) aged 23-85 years. The mean age of all subjects was M = 59.97 years (SD = 11.93), the mean BMI was M = 32.05 kg/m2 (SD = 4.84), and the mean body fat was M = 39.12% (SD = 6.48). The following questionnaires were used: Food Frequency Questionnaire-6 (FFQ-6), Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18 (TFEQ-R18), Yale Food Addiction Scale 2. 0 (YFAS 2.0), Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Body composition, anthropometry, fasting glucose, lipid profile, and blood pressure were measured. Results A total of 22.7% of participants with overweight and obesity had symptoms of depression according to the SDS, and 18.6% met the criteria for FA according to YFAS 2.0. FA was statistically significantly more common among people up to 50 years. BMI, body fat mass, diastolic blood pressure and sedentary behaviour were statistically significantly higher in people with FA symptoms. Those who were sedentary for 301-450 min per day were significantly more likely to have depressive symptoms, and those who were sedentary for more than 450 min per day were significantly more likely to have FA symptoms. Conclusions Our findings complement the current literature on FA, particularly in older adults and metabolic parameters, and suggest further research directions. Although our cross-sectional study design does not allow causal interpretations, increasing physical activity appears to be particularly important in the management of people with overweight or obesity and FA. This may be even more important than for people with depression alone, but future research is needed to explore these relationships further.

Abstract
The aim was to validate a new seven-item "TASC" (Trøndelag Apnoea Score) proxy for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) against polysomnography in the general population. Objectives included validation against different polysomnographic criteria, stratification by age and gender, and estimation of OSA prevalence. From the fourth wave of the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4), 1,201 participants were randomly invited to a substudy focusing on sleep and headaches, of whom 232 accepted and 84 (64% women, mean age 55.0 years, and standard deviation 11.5 years) underwent polysomnography. The TASC proxy sums seven binary items for snoring, observed breathing pauses, restricted daytime activities, hypertension, body mass index (≥30 kg/m2), age (≥50 years), and gender (male). A single night of ambulatory (home) polysomnography was analysed using both the recommended and optional hypopnoea criteria of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). We found 65% sensitivity and 87% specificity (Cohen's κ = 0.53, 95% confidence interval 0.34-0.72) for TASC ≥ 3 against AHI ≥ 15 (recommended AASM criteria). Validity was similar against AHI ≥ 30 but lower against AHI ≥ 5 and against the optional AASM criteria. Sensitivity and overall validity were higher among men and those above 50 years of age. The prevalence of an apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) of at least 5, 15, or 30 using the recommended (and optional) AASM criteria was 73% (46%), 37% (18%), or 15% (5%). A seven-item TASC proxy for OSA showed good validity and may be useful in screening and epidemiological settings. Sensitivity, specificity, and validity vary considerably by cut-off, by polysomnographic scoring criteria, and by gender and age strata.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of interconnected risk factors that significantly increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Taurine has emerged as a potential therapeutic agent for MetS. This meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the effects of taurine supplementation on MetS-related parameters. METHODS We conducted electronic searches through databases like Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov, encompassing publications up to December 1, 2023. Our analysis focused on established MetS diagnostic criteria, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Meta-regression explored potential dose-dependent relationships based on the total taurine dose administered during the treatment period. We also assessed secondary outcomes like body composition, lipid profile, and glycemic control. RESULTS Our analysis included 1024 participants from 25 RCTs. The daily dosage of taurine in the studies ranged from 0.5 g/day to 6 g/day, with follow-up periods varying between 5 and 365 days. Compared to control groups, taurine supplementation demonstrated statistically significant reductions in SBP (weighted mean difference [WMD] = -3.999 mmHg, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -7.293 to -0.706, p = 0.017), DBP (WMD = -1.509 mmHg, 95% CI = -2.479 to -0.539, p = 0.002), FBG (WMD: -5.882 mg/dL, 95% CI: -10.747 to -1.018, p = 0.018), TG (WMD: -18.315 mg/dL, 95% CI: -25.628 to -11.002, p < 0.001), but not in HDL-C (WMD: 0.644 mg/dl, 95% CI: -0.244 to 1.532, p = 0.155). Meta-regression analysis revealed a dose-dependent reduction in DBP (coefficient = -0.0108 mmHg per g, p = 0.0297) and FBG (coefficient = -0.0445 mg/dL per g, p = 0.0273). No significant adverse effects were observed compared to the control group. CONCLUSION Taurine supplementation exhibits positive effects on multiple MetS-related factors, making it a potential dietary addition for individuals at risk of or already experiencing MetS. Future research may explore dose-optimization strategies and potential long-term benefits of taurine for MetS management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity has previously been correlated with an elevated risk of reproductive system diseases in women. The waist-hip ratio (WHR) has been shown to be correlated with visceral fat, making it one of the most commonly used indicators of abdominal obesity. However, little is known about the relationship between WHR and infertility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the WHR on infertility in women of childbearing age. METHODS The study used cross-sectional data from women aged 20-45 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was conducted between 2017 and 2020. We collected details of their waist circumference, hip circumference, fertility status, and several other essential variables. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis and subgroup analyses to assess the association between WHR and infertility. RESULTS There were 976 participants, with 12.0% (117/976) who experienced infertility. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, our multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that every 0.1 unit increase in WHR resulted in a more than 35% higher risk of infertility (odds ratio [OR; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.35 [1.01∼1.81], p = 0.043). Compared to the group with WHR <0.85, the risk of infertility increased in the group with WHR ≥0.85, with an adjusted OR of 1.74 (95% CI: 1.06∼2.85). When WHR was treated as a continuous variable, it was observed that each 0.1 unit increase in WHR was associated with a relatively high risk in the secondary infertility population after adjusting all covariates, with an OR of 1.66 (95% CI: 1.14∼2.40, p = 0.01). When WHR was analyzed as a categorical variable, the group with WHR ≥0.85 exhibited a significantly higher risk of secondary infertility than the group with WHR <0.85, with the OR of 2.75 (95% CI: 1.35-5.59, p = 0.01) after adjusting for all covariates. Furthermore, the interaction analysis indicated that there was a significant interaction between age status on WHR and the risk of infertility. CONCLUSION WHR showed a positive correlation with the risk of infertility. This study highlights the importance of effectively managing abdominal fat and promoting the maintenance of optimal WHR levels to mitigate the progression of infertility, particularly for younger women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Blood pressure (BP), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and body composition are independently associated with health outcomes, yet the relationship between these variables has not been explored among airline pilots. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between CRF and BP, and further examine whether the relationship is mediated by body composition. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 356 airline pilots in New Zealand. We measured height, body mass, BP, waist circumference, skinfolds, and CRF (via a WattBike cycle ergometer submaximal VO 2max test). Partial correlation coefficients were estimated to examine the relationships between all variables while controlling for age and sex. Haye's PROCESS macro and the Sobel test were utilized for the mediation analysis. RESULTS All body composition variables (body mass index, waist circumference and body fat percentage) were positively correlated with all BP variables (systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and mean arterial pressure) ( P < 0.001). CRF was negatively correlated with all body composition and BP variables ( P < 0.001). The Sobel test and indirect effect were significant ( P < 0.001), confirming that all body composition variables partially mediate the relationship between CRF and all blood pressure variables. CONCLUSION Lower CRF is associated with higher blood pressure, and body composition partially mediates the relationship between these health risk factors. These findings highlight the importance of physical fitness and healthy body composition in the management of blood pressure among this occupational group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The body fat percentage is an indicator of overall body fat related to metabolism and inflammation. Our study aims to analyze the association between body fat percentage and the risk of cardiometabolic diseases in the general population. METHODS This was a retrospectively cross-sectional study. A total of 5084 participants enrolled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycle of 1999-2004 were divided into quartiles according to their body fat percent levels. The body fat percentage was measured from bioelectrical impedance analysis. A history of cardiometabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, was ascertained from questionnaire, physical or laboratory examination. The association between body fat percentage and cardiometabolic diseases was investigated using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS Compared with the lowest quartile of body fat percentage, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of the highest quartile was 3.99 (1.58-10.88) for cardiovascular disease, 1.08 (1.04-1.13) for hypertension and 3.08 (1.89-5.11) for diabetes. Body fat percentage independently increased the risk of cardiometabolic diseases as a continuous variable. CONCLUSION Higher body fat percentage level was associated with a higher likelihood of cardiometabolic diseases, which could be a powerful predictive factor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Age at menarche is a marker of pubertal timing that may influence adult height and body proportions. Previous studies have shown that socioeconomic status can affect age at menarche and growth patterns in different populations. This study aims to examine the associations between age at menarche, socioeconomic status, height, and leg length in a sample of Igbo ethnicity. METHODS The study used data from questionnaires and anthropometric measurements of 300 female students aged 18-25 years. Study tested the hypotheses that earlier menarche is associated with shorter stature and shorter leg length, and that these associations are modified by socioeconomic status using nonparametric analysis. RESULTS Mean age at menarche was fluctuating around 12.84 ± 1.40 and 13.59 ± 1.41 years with school girls and grew 3.0 cm taller per year birth cohort. The study also found that girls with earlier menarche were shorter adult height (162.51 ± 6.00) compared with girls who have menarche at a later age. The linear regression coefficients (bs) ranged from 0.37-0.49 in later year birth cohort and 0.37-0.44 in early year birth cohort for height. The effect of age at menarche on leg length was similar to the relation between age at menarche and birth cohort height. CONCLUSION The study will contribute to the understanding of how pubertal timing and socioeconomic status interact to shape adult health outcomes in a transitioning population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a chronic disease and is an established risk factor for other chronic diseases and mortality. Young adulthood is a period when people may be highly amenable to healthy behavior change, develop lifelong healthy behaviors, and when primary prevention of obesity may be feasible. Interventions in early adulthood have the potential for primary or primordial prevention (i.e., preventing risk factors before disease onset). The primary objective of this study is to determine the feasibility of a 6-month behavioral and educational intervention to promote healthy behaviors for obesity prevention among young adults. METHODS This is the study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial. Young adults (age 18-29) attending McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada, will be recruited and randomized to either the intervention or control. The intervention will include individual motivational interviewing sessions (online or in-person) with a trained interviewer plus educational materials (based on Canada's food guide and physical activity recommendations). The control group will receive educational materials only. The primary feasibility outcomes that will be evaluated as part of this pilot study include enrollment, retention (≥ 80%), data completion (≥ 80% of weights measured, and surveys completed), and participant satisfaction. Secondary clinical outcomes will include body mass index (BMI) change from baseline to 6 months, physical activity, nutrition risk, health-related quality of life mental health, and economic outcomes. Outcomes will be measured remotely using activity trackers, and online questionnaires at baseline and every 2 months. Risk stratification will be applied at baseline to identify participants at high risk of obesity (e.g., due to family or personal history). Exit questionnaires will collect data on how participants felt about the study and cost analysis will be conducted. DISCUSSION Our pilot randomized controlled trial will evaluate the feasibility of an obesity prevention intervention in early adulthood and will inform future larger studies for obesity prevention. The results of this study have the potential to directly contribute to the primary prevention of several types of cancer by testing an intervention that could be scalable to public health, post-secondary education, or primary care settings. Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a risk factor for obesity; however, the causal mechanisms are not well understood. Objectives were to measure the impact of ACEs on adulthood obesity and to investigate whether the association was mediated by nutrition and stress. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted using adults aged 46-90 years (n = 26 615) from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Participants were asked to recall ACEs from <18 years of age. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and per cent body fat were measured (2015-18) and obesity was defined using standard cut points. Nutrition was measured using data from the Short Diet Questionnaire and stress was measured using allostatic load. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for each obesity measure. Causal mediation methods were used to determine whether nutrition and stress were mediators. RESULTS There were 66% of adults who had experienced one or more ACE. The odds of obesity defined by BMI and waist circumference increased in a dose-response manner with increasing number of ACEs (P trend <0.001). For instance, adults with four to eight ACEs, compared with none, had greater odds of obesity, defined by BMI (adjusted OR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.28-1.75) and waist circumference (adjusted OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.15-1.47). There was no evidence of mediation by stress or nutrition. CONCLUSIONS Adversity experienced in early life is strongly associated with obesity among Canadian adults. Further research is needed to identify other mechanisms for this association to inform obesity prevention strategies.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence rate of adult sarcopenic obesity and discuss its predisposing factors. Methods: A total of 14,608 participants including 7521 men and 7087 women aged 18-93 years were enrolled in this study. The definition of sarcopenia was based on appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) standards (≤7.0 kg/m2 for men and ≤5.7 grams/m2 for women). The definition of obesity followed percent body fat (PBF) ≥25% for men and ≥35% for women. Sarcopenic obesity was defined as the combination of sarcopenia and obesity diagnosis. Risk factors for the onset of sarcopenic obesity were analyzed by logistic regression analysis, followed by diagnostic value assessment. Results: There were 496 cases of sarcopenic obesity, including 308 male patients and 188 female patients. The overall prevalence rate was 3.4%, with 4.10% for men and 2.65% for women. Compared with nonsarcogenic obesity group, the subjects with sarcogenic obesity showed shorter height and circumference of limbs, arm muscle, neck, chest, waist and hip, lighter weight, lower body mass index (BMI), bone mineral content (BMC), skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), body cell mass, fitness score and ASMI, and higher body fat mass, PBF, waist-hip ratio (WHR), visceral fat area (VFA), extracellular fluid/total body fat, and extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW; P < 0.01). Based on logistic regression analysis, BMI, BMC, PBF, WHR, BMR, VFA, fitness score, lean balance trunk, lean balance left leg, ASMI, ECW/TBW and the circumference of left arm, left leg, arm muscle, chest waist and hip were considered as risk factors for sarcogenic obesity (P < 0.05). After receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of basic condition, muscle mass, and limb condition, ASMI [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.75] showed relatively high diagnostic value for adult sarcopenic obesity; other indicators (AUC <0.75) showed moderate diagnostic value for adult sarcopenic obesity, except for fitness score. According to joint ROC analysis, combination of BMC, PBF, VFA, and ASMI (AUC = 0.78) showed high diagnostic value for adult sarcopenic obesity. ASMI was correlated with BMI (r = 0.246, P < 0.001), BMC (r = 0.798, P < 0.001), WHR (r = 0.197, P < 0.001), BMR (r = 0.932, P < 0.001), PBF (r = -0.761, P < 0.001), and VFA (r = -0.530, P < 0.001). In adult patients with sarcopenic obesity, a decrease in ASMI indicators may be accompanied by a decrease in BMI, BMC, WHR, and BMR as well as an increase in PBF and VFA. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of adult sarcopenic obesity was 3.40%. ASMI was closely correlated with BMI, BMC, PBF, WHR, BMR, and VFA, which may serve as early indicators in the diagnosis of adult sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most women experienced postmenopausal symptoms during the menopause transition, and they are a common reason for seeking medical attention and lifestyle modification during this phase of life. OBJECTIVE This study assessed the physical activity, lifestyle, and sociocultural levels-associated prevalence of excess weight (overweight and obesity) among postmenopausal women (PW) in Bono-East (Techiman) region, Ghana. DESIGN This is cross-sectional study. METHOD This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Bono-East regional capital, Techiman in Ghana over 5 months. Self-administered questionnaires were used to obtain sociodemographic data, physical activity, lifestyle, and sociocultural associated prevalence of excess weight. Anthropometric indices including ((body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) were assessed. RESULTS A total of 393 postmenopausal women with a mean age of 60.09 ± 6.24 years participated in the study. When reporting prevalence, obesity, and overweight were distinguished. Using the anthropometric parameters (BMI, WHtR, and WHR) as measured for being overweight, the prevalent rates were 35.7%, 21.7%, and 9.0% respectively. Also, when using obesity, the prevalent rate was 37.8%, 70.1%, and 82.0% using BMI, WHtR, and WHR, respectively. Over 55 (55.2%) of the study participants engaged in moderate physical activities, 23.1% were low and 21.7% with high physical activities. Housewives and unemployed participants are shown to have a higher risk of gaining weight (obese) especially when assessed with WHR and WHtR. Most participants responded that cultural beliefs prevent them from losing weight. Most participants had a poor attitude toward their eating habits. CONCLUSION According to the findings, postmenopausal Ghanaian women showed a high level of obesity and a moderate level of being overweight. The cultural perception of beauty influences Ghanaian postmenopausal women's physical activity level and dietary habits.

Abstract
This study aimed (1) to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI), physical activity (PA), and physical function (PF) with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and (2) to examine in-depth whether PA and PF mediate the relationship between BMI and HRQoL in older adults. We investigated 802 individuals (mean age 69.8 ± 5.6 years), residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal. Harmol and PA were assessed using the SF-36 and Baecke questionnaires, respectively, and PF by the Senior Fitness Test. The prevalence of overweight was 71.3%, 26.5% for normal weight, and 2.1% for underweight. We verified a small correlation between age and sex with BMI, PA, PF, and medium borderline with HRQoL. After adjusting for covariates (i.e., sex, age, comorbidities), the multivariate regression analysis indicated a 93.1% chance of improvement in HRQoL for low BMI, while PA and PF revealed a chance of increasing HRQoL by 91.8% and 60.0%, respectively. According to the serial mediation pathway, PA and PF partially mediated the association between BMI and HRQoL by 32.3% and 81.5%, respectively. The total variance of the model was 90%. It was concluded that BMI can negatively affect HRQoL. On the other hand, PA and PF are able to increase HRQoL levels during the aging process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cigarette smoking and obesity are leading risk factors for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although studies have established an association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and COPD, few studies have examined whether this association is moderated by cigarette smoking or body mass index (BMI). This cross-sectional study examined the association between ACEs and COPD, and whether cigarette smoking or BMI moderates this association. METHODS Data for this study came from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey. An analytic sample of 75,700 adults aged 18-79 years (50.7% female) were analyzed using binary logistic regression. The outcome variable investigated was self-reported physician-diagnosed COPD, and the main explanatory variable was ACEs. RESULTS Of the 75,700 respondents examined, 8.1% had COPD. About one in three (33.6%) respondents had no ACEs, 23.1% had one ACE, and about one in five (20.2%) had four or more ACEs. In the multivariable binary logistic regression, we found that the association between ACEs and COPD differs by BMI status. Controlling for the effects of other factors, the association between ACEs and COPD is strongest for respondents who are obese (AOR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.04-1.91). CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study demonstrate that ACEs are associated with COPD later in adulthood, and BMI moderated this association. The findings of this study add to the number of studies demonstrating the adverse impact of ACEs on chronic health outcomes among adults.

Abstract
Background: Investigate the effectiveness of the scientific 4 Phases Method, a methodology developed by EMAGRECENTRO, which is based on a ketogenic approach (total carbohydrate intake <40 g/day; including fibers) associated with health coach assistance, in promoting reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference after 5 weeks of methodology application. Methods: Record files from 354 individuals, both sexes, aged between 18 and 67, who took part in the 4 Phases Method were used to develop this study. Age, sex, weight, height, BMI, waist circumference measurement, and the presence of ketone bodies in the urine were evaluated before (baseline) and after 5 weeks of the 4 Phases application. Results: In general, a significant reduction in body weight (−7.8 ± 1.2 kg, p < 0.0001), BMI (−2.8 ± 0.4 kg/m2, p < 0.0001), and waist circumference measurement (−7.6 ± 0.4 cm, p < 0.0001) was found after the application of the 4 Phases Method, regardless of age, gender, and BMI. Conclusions: Taken together, our results demonstrated that the 4 Phases Method was able to promote significant body weight, BMI, and waist circumference reductions in the short term, particularly by associating a ketogenic intake strategy with a regular close follow-up weekly consultation with a health coach assistance.

Abstract
In the last few decades, North African countries have faced the nutrition transition, leading to an increase in obesity, exacerbated by an extremely low rate of physical activity (PA). Particular attention must be paid to abdominal obesity (one of the metabolic syndrome criteria), which has been linked to several health problems. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of overweight/obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, in a sample of urban Moroccan women and to analyze the anthropometric indicators of metabolic syndrome risk among subsamples with different PA and socio-demographic characteristics. Urban Moroccan women living in Casablanca (n = 304; mean age 37.4 ± 15.6 years) were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Data concerning socio-demographic variables, PA behavior, and anthropometric measures (height, weight, waist, and hip circumferences) were directly collected. Body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and relative fat mass were computed. Comparisons between women with different socio-demographic characteristics were performed through ANCOVA adjusted for age. The results reveal that 39.4% of the women did not practice any PA. The percentage of women above the cutoffs of risk for general and central obesity was more than half for all the indexes, except for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and 19.6% were at a very high risk of health issues. Moreover, being female unmarried, childless, graduates, and students were found to be protective against obesity. In conclusion, Moroccan women have a high level of obesity, especially abdominal, and preventive interventions are needed to reduce the health impact of obesity in this population.

Abstract
Determining the prevalence and characteristics of individuals susceptible to present with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is essential for developing targeted and efficient prevention and screening strategies. We included 27,210 participants aged ≥45 years old (50.3% women) from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging. Using the STOP questionnaire combined to the percentage of body fat (%BF), we estimated the prevalence of individuals at high-risk for OSA in a sex and age-specific manner, and tested the relation with comorbidities, menopause and systemic inflammation. The prevalence was 17.5%, and was lower in women (13.1%) than in men (21.9%). A high level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was the strongest factor associated with OSA risk and this association was 1.3-2.3 times higher in women than in men. OSA risk increased with age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, anxio-depressive symptoms, asthma and arthritis. In women, post-menopausal status was associated with a high OSA risk. Nearly 1 adult out of 5 older than 45 is at risk for OSA in Canada. Comorbidities, menopause and systemic inflammation, more than age, explain increased OSA prevalence. Considering this high prevalence and associations with medical and mental comorbidities, health care practitioners should incorporate systematic OSA screening in their clinical procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE this retrospective study aims to compare the prevalence and diagnostic agreement of sarcopenic obesity (SO) using different obesity diagnostic methods among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS SO was diagnosed with sarcopenia and obesity diagnostic methods. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria 2019 (AWGS2019). Four widely used indicators were used to define obesity: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), percent of body fat (PBF) and visceral fat area (VFA). Cohen's kappa was used to analyse the diagnosis agreement of SO between different diagnostic methods. RESULTS a total of 1,050 participants were included, including 347 men (71.3 ± 7.4 years) and 703 women (69.9 ± 7.5 years). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 25% in total participants, there was no difference between men (24.2%) and women (25.5%), (P = 0.705). With different obesity diagnostic methods, the obesity prevalence ranged from 4.1 to 42.2%, the SO prevalence was 0.1-7.9%. The diagnosis agreement of SO was poor-to-moderate (κ ranged from -0.002 to 0.682). Among the four diagnostic methods, AWGS combined with BMI had the poorest agreement (κ = -0.002 with other methods), AWGS combined with VFA had the best agreement (κ = 0.641 and 0.682 with AWGS combined with PBF and with AWGS combined with WC, respectively). CONCLUSION the prevalence of SO vary considerably and the diagnostic agreement is poor-to-moderate with non-uniform diagnostic methods. BMI has the lowest sensitivity, whereas VFA has the highest sensitivity in diagnosis of SO, and VFA has a relatively good diagnostic agreement with other diagnostic methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although studies have shown that higher waist-hip ratio (WHR) is closely related to higher risk of metabolism-related diseases, the relationship between WHR and subclinical myocardial injury (SC-MI) is unknown. This study was to evaluate the effect of WHR on SC-MI in the general population free from cardiovascular disease. METHODS The cross-sectional study included 6253 participants without cardiovascular disease (CVD) from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) for further analysis. Restricted cubic spline, multivariable logistic regression models and subgroup analyses were performed to assess the association between WHR and SC-MI. RESULTS The multivariate logistic regression showed that after adjusting for potential confounding factors, participants in the higher quartiles had higher risk of developing SC-MI than those in the first quartile of WHR [Q3, OR (95% CI): 1.523 (1.159, 2.000), P = 0.002; Q4, OR (95% CI): 1.719 (1.279, 2.311), P < 0.001], and this relationship was robust among the participants aged ≥ 50 years, with hypertension and without diabetes. Every 0.1 unit increase in WHR, as a continuous variable, increased the risk of SC-MI by more than 20% [OR (95% CI): 1.233 (1.092, 1.392), P = 0.001]. And restricted cubic spline analysis showed that there was a linear positive correlation between WHR and the risk of SC-MI. CONCLUSIONS WHR may be an independent risk factor for SC-MI in the general population free from CVD.

Abstract
Measures of obesity, including body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), do not fully capture the complexity of obesity-related health risks. This study identified distinct classes of obesity-related characteristics and evaluated their associations with BMI, WC, and percent body fat (%BF) using cross-sectional data from 30,096 participants aged 45-85 in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (2011-2015). Sixteen obesity-related variables, including behavioural, metabolic, physical health, and mental health/social factors, were included in a latent class analysis to identify distinct classes of participants. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were estimated from logistic regression for associations between each class and obesity defined by BMI, WC and %BF. Six latent classes were identified: "low-risk" (39.8%), "cardiovascular risk" (19.4%), "metabolic risk" (16.9%), "sleep and mental health risk" (12.1%), "multiple and complex risk" (6.7%), and "cardiometabolic risk" (5.1%). Compared to "low-risk", all classes had increased odds of BMI-, WC- and %BF-defined obesity. For example, the "complex and multiple risk" class was associated with obesity by BMI (OR: 10.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): 9.51, 12.04), WC (OR: 9.21, 95% CI: 8,15, 10,41) and %BF (OR: 7.54, 95% CI: 6.21, 9.16). Distinct classes of obesity-related characteristics were identified and were strongly associated with obesity defined by multiple measures.

Abstract
Steroid hormones act as important regulators of physiological processes including gene expression. They provide possible mechanistic explanations of observed sex-dimorphisms in obesity and coronary artery disease (CAD). Here, we aim to unravel causal relationships between steroid hormones, obesity, and CAD in a sex-specific manner. In genome-wide meta-analyses of four steroid hormone levels and one hormone ratio, we identified 17 genome-wide significant loci of which 11 were novel. Among loci, seven were female-specific, four male-specific, and one was sex-related (stronger effects in females). As one of the loci was the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region, we analyzed HLA allele counts and found four HLA subtypes linked to 17-OH-progesterone (17-OHP), including HLA-B*14*02. Using Mendelian randomization approaches with four additional hormones as exposure, we detected causal effects of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and 17-OHP on body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The DHEA-S effect was stronger in males. Additionally, we observed the causal effects of testosterone, estradiol, and their ratio on WHR. By mediation analysis, we found a direct sex-unspecific effect of 17-OHP on CAD while the other four hormone effects on CAD were mediated by BMI or WHR. In conclusion, we identified the sex-specific causal networks of steroid hormones, obesity-related traits, and CAD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of normal BMI with central obesity (CO), high BMI with CO, high BMI without CO, and normal BMI without CO, with function and cognition in older adults. METHODS Cross-sectional study involving 754 participants ≥ 65 years. Data collected include demographics, cognition, and physical measurements. RESULTS Females had a higher prevalence of high BMI with CO and a lower prevalence of high BMI without CO than males (61.0% vs 44.6% and 4.6% vs 15.0%, respectively). Within gender, CO groups, regardless of BMI, had lower mini-mental state examination (MMSE), handgrip strength (HGS), and longer timed-up-and-go (TUG) scores. Overall, the high BMI without CO group had the highest MMSE scores, HGS, and shortest TUG. Amongst males, HGS was significantly lower in the normal BMI with CO group (B -3.28, 95% CI -6.32 to -0.23, P = 0.04). CO, regardless of normal/high BMI, had significantly longer TUG time (B 2.65, 95% CI 0.45 to 4.84, P = 0.02; B 1.07, 95% CI 0.25 to 1.88, P = 0.01, respectively) than normal BMI without CO group. CO was associated with lower MMSE scores in both genders but significant only in males with normal BMI and CO (B -1.60, 95% CI -3.15 to -0.06, P = 0.04). CONCLUSION CO may be a better predictor of obesity and adverse outcomes in older adults. High BMI without CO was associated with better outcomes especially in males but require further validation. Prospective longitudinal studies are needed to ascertain the impact of BMI and/or CO on function, cognition, mortality, and gender differences.
