A comprehensive review on advancements in sensors for air pollution applications

Air pollution, originating from both natural and human-made sources, presents significant threats to human health and the environment. This review explores the latest technological advancements in air quality sensors focusing on their applications in monitoring a wide range of pollution sources from volcanic eruptions and wildfires to industrial emissions, transportation, agricultural activities and indoor air quality. The review categorizes these sources and examines the operational principles, system architectures, and effectiveness of various air quality monitoring instruments including low-cost sensors, gas analyzers, weather stations, passive sampling devices and remote sensing technologies such as satellite and LiDAR. Key insights include the rapid evolution of sensor technology driven by the need for more accurate, real-time monitoring solutions that are both cost-effective and widely accessible. Despite significant advancements, challenges such as sensor calibration, standardization, and data integration remain critical for ensuring reliable air quality assessments. The manuscript concludes by emphasizing the need for continued innovation and the integration of advanced sensor technologies with regulatory frameworks to enhance environmental management and public health protection.

Operation Temperature Effects on a Microwave Gas Sensor with and without Sensitive Material

Microwave gas sensors have garnered attention for their high sensitivity and selectivity in the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, traditional gas sensors generally rely on sensitive materials that degrade over time and are easily affected by the environment, compromising their stability and accuracy. This study proposes a microwave VOC gas sensor based on the condensation effect. The sensor adopts a novel design without sensitive materials, utilizing the condensation effect to detect acetone gas. The sensor system consists of a microwave sensor and a temperature control device. As the sensor temperature is lowered below the boiling point of acetone, the condensation of acetone gas on the sensor surface is achieved, enabling accurate detection of acetone gas. Experimental results indicate that the accumulated amount of acetone on the sensor surface is positively correlated with its response, with the maximum response of 3000 ppm acetone gas reaching 0.34 dB. Additionally, this study investigated the detection mechanism of the sensor after adding the sensitive material MXene and compared the performance of the sensor at different temperatures (-10 °C, 0 °C, and 60 °C). The results show that at -10 °C the sensor mainly captures acetone through physical adsorption, while at 25 and 60 °C, it primarily responds through chemical adsorption, with a maximum response of 0.29 dB. The VOC sensor based on the condensation effect without sensitive materials not only achieves the same sensitivity as traditional microwave sensors but also demonstrates stronger stability and anti-interference capabilities.

Design of AI-Enhanced and Hardware-Supported Multimodal E-Skin for Environmental Object Recognition and Wireless Toxic Gas Alarm

Post-earthquake rescue missions are full of challenges due to the unstable structure of ruins and successive aftershocks. Most of the current rescue robots lack the ability to interact with environments, leading to low rescue efficiency. The multimodal electronic skin (e-skin) proposed not only reproduces the pressure, temperature, and humidity sensing capabilities of natural skin but also develops sensing functions beyond it-perceiving object proximity and NO2 gas. Its multilayer stacked structure based on Ecoflex and organohydrogel endows the e-skin with mechanical properties similar to natural skin. Rescue robots integrated with multimodal e-skin and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms show strong environmental perception capabilities and can accurately distinguish objects and identify human limbs through grasping, laying the foundation for automated post-earthquake rescue. Besides, the combination of e-skin and NO2 wireless alarm circuits allows robots to sense toxic gases in the environment in real time, thereby adopting appropriate measures to protect trapped people from the toxic environment. Multimodal e-skin powered by AI algorithms and hardware circuits exhibits powerful environmental perception and information processing capabilities, which, as an interface for interaction with the physical world, dramatically expands intelligent robots' application scenarios.

Carbon Micro/Nano Machining toward Miniaturized Device: Structural Engineering, Large-Scale Fabrication, and Performance Optimization

With the rapid development of micro/nano machining, there is an elevated demand for high-performance microdevices with high reliability and low cost. Due to their outstanding electrochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical performance, carbon materials are extensively utilized in constructing microdevices for energy storage, sensing, and optoelectronics. Carbon micro/nano machining is fundamental in carbon-based intelligent microelectronics, multifunctional integrated microsystems, high-reliability portable/wearable consumer electronics, and portable medical diagnostic systems. Despite numerous reviews on carbon materials, a comprehensive overview is lacking that systematically encapsulates the development of high-performance microdevices based on carbon micro/nano structures, from structural design to manufacturing strategies and specific applications. This review focuses on the latest progress in carbon micro/nano machining toward miniaturized device, including structural engineering, large-scale fabrication, and performance optimization. Especially, the review targets an in-depth evaluation of carbon-based micro energy storage devices, microsensors, microactuators, miniaturized photoresponsive and electromagnetic interference shielding devices. Moreover, it highlights the challenges and opportunities in the large-scale manufacturing of carbon-based microdevices, aiming to spark further exciting research directions and application prospectives.

Advances in 2D Materials Based Gas Sensors for Industrial Machine Olfactory Applications

The escalating development and improvement of gas sensing ability in industrial equipment, or "machine olfactory", propels the evolution of gas sensors toward enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, stability, power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and longevity. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, distinguished by their atomic-thin profile, expansive specific surface area, remarkable mechanical strength, and surface tunability, hold significant potential for addressing the intricate challenges in gas sensing. However, a comprehensive review of 2D materials-based gas sensors for specific industrial applications is absent. This review delves into the recent advances in this field and highlights the potential applications in industrial machine olfaction. The main content encompasses industrial scenario characteristics, fundamental classification, enhancement methods, underlying mechanisms, and diverse gas sensing applications. Additionally, the challenges associated with transitioning 2D material gas sensors from laboratory development to industrialization and commercialization are addressed, and future-looking viewpoints on the evolution of next-generation intelligent gas sensory systems in the industrial sector are prospected.

Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds through Spectroscopic Signatures in Nanoporous Fabry-Pérot Optical Microcavities

Increasingly complex modern gas-monitoring scenarios necessitate advanced sensing capabilities to detect and identify a diverse range of gases under varying conditions. There is a rising demand for individual sensors with multiple responses capable of recognizing gases, identifying components in mixtures, and providing stable responses. Inspired by gas sensors employing multivariable response principles, we develop a nanoporous anodic alumina high-order microcavity (NAA-HOμCV) gas sensor with multiple optical outputs for discriminative gas detection. The NAA-HOμCV architecture, formed by a Fabry-Pérot microcavity with distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors and an extended-length microcavity layer supporting multiple resonant modes, serves as an effective solid-state fingerprint platform for distinguishing volatile organic compound (VOC) gases. Our research reveals that the coupling strength of light into resonant modes and their evolution depend on the thickness of the DBR mirrors and the dimension of the microcavity layer, which allows us to optimize the discriminative sensing capability of the NAA-HOμCV sensor through structural engineering of the microcavity and photonic crystal mirrors. Gas-sensing experiments conducted on the NAA-HOμCV sensor demonstrate real-time discrimination between physiosorbed VOC gases (isopropanol, ethanol, or acetone) in reversible gas sensing. It also achieves superior ppb-level sensing in irreversible gas sensing of model silane molecules. Our study presents promising avenues for designing compact, cost-effective, and highly efficient gas sensors with tailored properties for discriminative gas detection.

Rationalizing Graphene-ZnO Composites for Gas Sensing via Functionalization with Amines

The rational design of composites based on graphene/metal oxides is one of the pillars for advancing their application in various practical fields, particularly gas sensing. In this study, a uniform distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) through the graphene layer was achieved, taking advantage of amine functionalization. The beneficial effect of amine groups on the arrangement of ZnO NPs and the efficiency of their immobilization was revealed by core-level spectroscopy, pointing out strong ionic bonding between the aminated graphene (AmG) and ZnO. The stability of the resulting Am-ZnO nanocomposite was confirmed by demonstrating that its morphology remains unchanged even after prolonged heating up to 350 °C, as observed by electron microscopy. On-chip multisensor arrays composed of both AmG and Am-ZnO were fabricated and thoroughly tested, showing almost tenfold enhancement of the chemiresistive response upon decorating the AmG layer with ZnO nanoparticles, due to the formation of p-n heterojunctions. Operating at room temperature, the fabricated multisensor chips exhibited high robustness and a detection limit of 3.6 ppm and 5.1 ppm for ammonia and ethanol, respectively. Precise identification of the studied analytes was achieved by employing the pattern recognition technique based on linear discriminant analysis to process the acquired multisensor response.

Graphene and metal-organic framework hybrids for high-performance sensors for lung cancer biomarker detection supported by machine learning augmentation

Conventional diagnostic methods for lung cancer, based on breath analysis using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, have limitations for fast screening due to their limited availability, operational complexity, and high cost. As potential replacement, among several low-cost and portable methods, chemoresistive sensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that represent biomarkers of lung cancer were explored as promising solutions, which unfortunately still face challenges. To address the key problems of these sensors, such as low sensitivity, high response time, and poor selectivity, this study presents the design of new chemoresistive sensors based on hybridised porous zeolitic imidazolate (ZIF-8) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and laser-scribed graphene (LSG) structures, inspired by the architecture of the human lung. The sensing performance of the fabricated ZIF-8@LSG hybrid sensors was characterised using four dominant VOC biomarkers, including acetone, ethanol, methanol, and formaldehyde, which are identified as metabolomic signatures in lung cancer patients' exhaled breath. The results using simulated breath samples showed that the sensors exhibited excellent performance for a set of these biomarkers, including fast response (2-3 seconds), a wide detection range (0.8 ppm to 50 ppm), a low detection limit (0.8 ppm), and high selectivity, all obtained at room temperature. Intelligent machine learning (ML) recognition using the multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based classification algorithm was further employed to enhance the capability of these sensors, achieving an exceptional accuracy (approximately 96.5%) for the four targeted VOCs over the tested range (0.8-10 ppm). The developed hybridised nanomaterials, combined with the ML methodology, showcase robust identification of lung cancer biomarkers in simulated breath samples containing multiple biomarkers and a promising solution for their further improvements toward practical applications.

MXene-Based Elastomer Mimetic Stretchable Sensors: Design, Properties, and Applications

Flexible sensors based on MXene-polymer composites are highly prospective for next-generation wearable electronics used in human-machine interfaces. One of the motivating factors behind the progress of flexible sensors is the steady arrival of new conductive materials. MXenes, a new family of 2D nanomaterials, have been drawing attention since the last decade due to their high electronic conductivity, processability, mechanical robustness and chemical tunability. In this review, we encompass the fabrication of MXene-based polymeric nanocomposites, their structure-property relationship, and applications in the flexible sensor domain. Moreover, our discussion is not only limited to sensor design, their mechanism, and various modes of sensing platform, but also their future perspective and market throughout the world. With our article, we intend to fortify the bond between flexible matrices and MXenes thus promoting the swift advancement of flexible MXene-sensors for wearable technologies.

Low Part-Per-Trillion, Humidity Resistant Detection of Nitric Oxide Using Microtoroid Optical Resonators

The nitric oxide radical plays pivotal roles in physiological as well as atmospheric contexts. Although the detection of dissolved nitric oxide in vivo has been widely explored, highly sensitive (i.e., low part-per-trillion level), selective, and humidity-resistant detection of gaseous nitric oxide in air remains challenging. In the field, humidity can have dramatic effects on the accuracy and selectivity of gas sensors, confounding data, and leading to overestimation of gas concentration. Highly selective and humidity-resistant gaseous NO sensors based on laser-induced graphene were recently reported, displaying a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.3 ppb. Although highly sensitive (LOD = 590 ppq) single-wall carbon nanotube NO sensors have been reported, these sensors lack selectivity and humidity resistance. In this report, we disclose a highly sensitive (LOD = 2.34 ppt), selective, and humidity-resistant nitric oxide sensor based on a whispering-gallery mode microtoroid optical resonator. Excellent analyte selectivity was enabled via novel ferrocene-containing polymeric coatings synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. Utilizing a frequency locked optical whispering evanescent resonator system, the microtoroid's real-time resonance frequency shift response to nitric oxide was tracked with subfemtometer resolution. The lowest concentration experimentally detected was 6.4 ppt, which is the lowest reported to date. Additionally, the performance of the sensor remained consistent across different humidity environments. Lastly, the impact of the chemical composition and molecular weight of the novel ferrocene-containing polymeric coatings on sensing performance was evaluated. We anticipate that our results will have impact on a wide variety of fields where NO sensing is important such as medical diagnostics through exhaled breath, determination of planetary habitability, climate change, air quality monitoring, and treating cardiovascular and neurological disorders.

A Wearable Strain Sensor Utilizing Shape Memory Polymer/Carbon Nanotube Composites Measuring Respiration Movements

Flexible wearable sensors are integral in diverse applications, particularly in healthcare and human-computer interaction systems. This paper introduces a resistive stretch sensor crafted from shape memory polymers (SMP) blended with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and coated with silver paste. Initially, the sensor's characteristics underwent evaluation using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and an LCR meter. These sensors showcased exceptional sensitivity, boasting a gauge factor of up to 20 at 5% strain, making them adept at detecting subtle movements or stimuli. Subsequently, the study conducted a comparison between SMP-CNT conductors with and without the silver coating layer. The durability of the sensors was validated through 1000 cycles of stretching at 4% ∆R/R0. Lastly, the sensors were utilized for monitoring respiration and measuring human breathing. Fourier transform and power spectrum density (PSD) analysis were employed to discern frequency components. Positioned between the chest and abdominal wall for contact-based respiration monitoring, the sensors revealed a dominant frequency of approximately 0.35 Hz. Signal filtering further enhanced their ability to capture respiration signals, establishing them as valuable tools for next-generation personalized healthcare applications.

Graphene-based chemiresistive gas sensors

Gas sensors allow the monitoring of the chemical environment of humans, which is often crucial for their wellbeing or even survival. Miniaturization, reversibility, and selectivity are some of the key challenges for serial use of chemical sensors. This tutorial review describes critical aspects when using nanomaterials as sensing substrates for the application in chemiresistive gas sensors. Graphene has been shown to be a promising candidate, as it allows gas sensors to be operated at room temperature, possibly saving large amounts of energy. In this review, an overview is given on the general mechanisms for gas-sensitive semiconducting materials and the implications of doping and functionalization on the sensing parameters of chemiresistive devices. It shows in detail how different challenges, like sensitivity, response time, reversibility and selectivity have been approached by material development and operation modes. In addition, perspectives from the area of data analysis and intelligent algorithms are presented, which can further enhance these sensors' usability in the field.

Plasmonic nanosensors for pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis

The detection and identification of clinical biomarkers with related sensitivity have become a source of considerable concern for biomedical analysis. There have been increasing efforts toward the development of single-molecule analytical platforms to overcome this concern. The latest developments in plasmonic nanomaterials include fascinating advances in energy, catalyst chemistry, optics, biotechnology, and medicine. Nanomaterials can be successfully applied to biomolecule and drug detection in plasmonic nanosensors for pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis. Plasmonic-based sensing technology exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity depending on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomena. In this critical paper, we offer an overview of the methodology of the SPR, LSPR, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA), surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF), and plasmonic nanoplatforms advanced for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. First of all, we present here a brief discussion of the above trends. We have devoted the last section to the explanation of SPR, LSPR, SERS, SEIRA, and SEF platforms, which have found a wide range of applications, and reviewed recent advances for biomedical and pharmaceutical analysis.

Direct Laser Writing of the Porous Graphene Foam for Multiplexed Electrochemical Sweat Sensors

Wearable electrochemical sensors provide means to detect molecular-level information from the biochemical markers in biofluids for physiological health evaluation. However, a high-density array is often required for multiplexed detection of multiple markers in complex biofluids, which is challenging with low-cost fabrication methods. This work reports the low-cost direct laser writing of porous graphene foam as a flexible electrochemical sensor to detect biomarkers and electrolytes in sweat. The resulting electrochemical sensor exhibits high sensitivity and low limit of detection for various biomarkers (e.g., the sensitivity of 6.49/6.87/0.94/0.16 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 and detection limit of 0.28/0.26/1.43/11.3 μM to uric acid/dopamine/tyrosine/ascorbic acid) in sweat. The results from this work open up opportunities for noninvasive continuous monitoring of gout, hydration status, and drug intake/overdose.

NOx Sensor Constructed from Conductive Metal-Organic Framework and Graphene for Airway Inflammation Screening

The detection of nitric oxide in human exhaled breath (EB) has received wide attention due to its close relationship with respiratory tract inflammation. Herein, a ppb-level NOx chemiresistive sensor was prepared by assembling graphene oxide (GO) with a conductive π-d conjugated metal-organic framework Co3(HITP)2 (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene) in the presence of poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The construction of a gas sensor chip was achieved by drop-casting the GO/PDDA/Co3(HITP)2 composite onto ITO-PET interdigital electrodes, followed by in situ reduction of GO to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) in hydrazine hydrate vapor. Compared with bare rGO, the nanocomposite shows significantly improved sensitivity and selectivity for NOx among various gas analytes owing to its folded and porous structure as well as its numerous active sites. The limit of detection (LOD) for NO and NO2 can reach as low as 11.2 and 6.8 ppb, respectively, and the response/recovery time to 200 ppb NO is 24/41 s. These results indicate that rGO/PDDA/Co3(HITP)2 can achieve a sensitive and fast response toward NOx at room temperature (RT). Additionally, good repeatability and long-term stability were observed. Furthermore, the sensor shows improved humidity tolerance owing to the presence of hydrophobic benzene rings in Co3(HITP)2. To demonstrate its ability in EB detection, EB samples collected from healthy individuals were spiked with a certain amount of NO to simulate the EB of respiratory inflammatory patients. The sensor can successfully distinguish healthy people from the simulated patients. Furthermore, in real clinical sample detection, the sensor can further differentiate acute respiratory inflammatory patients from the chronic ones.

Superhydrophobic, stretchable kirigami pencil-on-paper multifunctional device platform

Wearable electronics with applications in healthcare, human-machine interfaces, and robotics often explore complex manufacturing procedures and are not disposable. Although the use of conductive pencil patterns on cellulose paper provides inexpensive, disposable sensors, they have limited stretchability and are easily affected by variations in the ambient environment. This work presents the combination of pencil-on-paper with the hydrophobic fumed SiO2 (Hf-SiO2) coating and stretchable kirigami structures from laser cutting to prepare a superhydrophobic, stretchable pencil-on-paper multifunctional sensing platform. The resulting sensor exhibits a large response to NO2 gas at elevated temperature from self-heating, which is minimally affected by the variations in the ambient temperature and relative humidity, as well as mechanical deformations such as bending and stretching states. The integrated temperature sensor and electrodes with the sensing platform can accurately detect temperature and electrophysiological signals to alert for adverse thermal effects and cardiopulmonary diseases. The thermal therapy and electrical stimulation provided by the platform can also deliver effective means to battle against inflammation/infection and treat chronic wounds. The superhydrophobic pencil-onpaper multifunctional device platform provides a low-cost, disposable solution to disease diagnostic confirmation and early treatment for personal and population health.

Liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C3N5 to nanosheets for improved photocatalytic antibacterial activity

Liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C₃N₅ was applied to synthesize g-C₃N₅ nanosheets. In order to characterize the samples, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), UV-Vis absorption spectra (UV-Vis), and photoluminescence spectra (PL) were examined. g-C₃N₅ nanosheets exhibited enhanced performance in the inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) with visible light irradiation relative to bulk g-C₃N₅ and promoted complete inactivation of E. coli within 120 min. h⁺ and •O₂^- were the principal reactive species in the antibacterial process. In the early stages, SOD and CAT played a defensive role in resisting oxidative damage of active species. With the prolonged light exposure time, the antioxidant protection system was overwhelmed leading to the destruction of the cell membrane. The leakage of cell contents such as K⁺, protein, and DNA caused bacterial apoptosis ultimately. The enhanced photocatalytic antibacterial performance of g-C₃N₅ nanosheets is ascribed to the stronger redox property by the upward shift of CB and downward shift of VB compared with bulk g-C₃N₅. On the other hand, larger specific surface area and better separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers are helpful to the improved photocatalytic performance. This study systematically revealed the inactivation process toward E. coli and expanded the application range of g-C₃N₅-based materials with abundant solar energy.

Laser Processing of Crumpled Porous Graphene/MXene Nanocomposites for a Standalone Gas Sensing System

Integrating wearable gas sensors with energy harvesting and storage devices can create self-powered systems for continuous monitoring of gaseous molecules. However, the development is still limited by complex fabrication processes, poor stretchability, and sensitivity. Herein, we report the low-cost and scalable laser scribing of crumpled graphene/MXenes nanocomposite foams to combine stretchable self-charging power units with gas sensors for a fully integrated standalone gas sensing system. The crumpled nanocomposite designed in island-bridge device architecture allows the integrated self-charging unit to efficiently harvest kinetic energy from body movements into stable power with adjustable voltage/current outputs. Meanwhile, given the stretchable gas sensor with a large response of ∼1% ppm^-1 and an ultralow detection limit of ∼5 ppb to NO₂/NH₃, the integrated system provides real-time monitoring of the exhaled human breath and the local air quality. The innovations in materials and structural designs pave the way for the future development of wearable electronics.

Vanadium Oxide-Doped Laser-Induced Graphene Multi-Parameter Sensor to Decouple Soil Nitrogen Loss and Temperature

Monitoring nitrogen utilization efficiency and soil temperature in agricultural systems for timely intervention is essential for crop health with reduced environmental pollution. Herein, this work presents a high-performance multi-parameter sensor based on vanadium oxide (VOX )-doped laser-induced graphene (LIG) foam to completely decouple nitrogen oxides (NOX ) and temperature. The highly porous 3D VOX -doped LIG foam composite is readily obtained by laser scribing vanadium sulfide (V5 S8 )-doped block copolymer and phenolic resin self-assembled films. The heterojunction formed at the LIG/VOX interface provides the sensor with enhanced response to NOX and an ultralow limit of detection of 3 ppb (theoretical estimate of 451 ppt) at room temperature. The sensor also exhibits a wide detection range, fast response/recovery, good selectivity, and stability over 16 days. Meanwhile, the sensor can accurately detect temperature over a wide linear range of 10-110 °C. The encapsulation of the sensor with a soft membrane further allows for temperature sensing without being affected by NOX . The unencapsulated sensor operated at elevated temperature removes the influences of relative humidity and temperature variations for accurate NOX measurements. The capability to decouple nitrogen loss and soil temperature paves the way for the development of future multimodal decoupled electronics for precision agriculture and health monitoring.

Self-Healing, Reconfigurable, Thermal-Switching, Transformative Electronics for Health Monitoring

Soft, deformable electronic devices provide the means to monitor physiological information and health conditions for disease diagnostics. However, their practical utility is limited due to the lack of intrinsical thermal switching for mechanically transformative adaptability and self-healing capability against mechanical damages. Here, the design concepts, materials and physics, manufacturing approaches, and application opportunities of self-healing, reconfigurable, thermal-switching device platforms based on hyperbranched polymers and biphasic liquid metal are reported. The former provides excellent self-healing performance and unique tunable stiffness and adhesion regulated by temperature for the on-skin switch, whereas the latter results in liquid metal circuits with extreme stretchability (>900%) and high conductivity (3.40 × 104  S cm-1 ), as well as simple recycling capability. Triggered by the increased temperature from the skin surface, a multifunctional device platform can conveniently conform and strongly adhere to the hierarchically textured skin surface for non-invasive, continuous, comfortable health monitoring. Additionally, the self-healing and adhesive characteristics allow multiple multifunctional circuit components to assemble and completely wrap on 3D curvilinear surfaces. Together, the design, manufacturing, and proof-of-concept demonstration of the self-healing, transformative, and self-assembled electronics open up new opportunities for robust soft deformable devices, smart robotics, prosthetics, and Internet-of-Things, and human-machine interfaces on irregular surfaces.

Multiplexed DNA-functionalized graphene sensor with artificial intelligence-based discrimination performance for analyzing chemical vapor compositions

This study presents a new technology that can detect and discriminate individual chemical vapors to determine the chemical vapor composition of mixed chemical composition in situ based on a multiplexed DNA-functionalized graphene (MDFG) nanoelectrode without the need to condense the original vapor or target dilution. To the best of our knowledge, our artificial intelligence (AI)-operated arrayed electrodes were capable of identifying the compositions of mixed chemical gases with a mixed ratio in the early stage. This innovative technology comprised an optimized combination of nanodeposited arrayed electrodes and artificial intelligence techniques with advanced sensing capabilities that could operate within biological limits, resulting in the verification of mixed vapor chemical components. Highly selective sensors that are tolerant to high humidity levels provide a target for "breath chemovapor fingerprinting" for the early diagnosis of diseases. The feature selection analysis achieved recognition rates of 99% and above under low-humidity conditions and 98% and above under humid conditions for mixed chemical compositions. The 1D convolutional neural network analysis performed better, discriminating the compositional state of chemical vapor under low- and high-humidity conditions almost perfectly. This study provides a basis for the use of a multiplexed DNA-functionalized graphene gas sensor array and artificial intelligence-based discrimination of chemical vapor compositions in breath analysis applications.

Fabrication and Computational Study of a Chemiresistive NO2 Gas Sensor Based on the Carbon Dots-WO3 Heterostructure for Operating below Room Temperature

For a long time, chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) suffer from higher operating temperatures, resulting in higher energy consumption and instability of the sensors. Generally, a MOS-based chemiresistive gas sensor being able to work at room temperature is considered to be outstanding already. Here, a highly sensitive NO₂ gas sensor based on the carbon dots-WO₃ heterostructure, which can work below room temperature at -6 °C, is fabricated. At 18, -1, and -6 °C, its detection limits are 200 ppb, 5 ppm, and 20 ppm, respectively, and the corresponding response values (R_a/R_g) are 1.11, 1.04, and 1.13, respectively. The sensor exhibits good selectivity, stability, and linearity between relative humidity and response values too. A peculiar response behavior was observed. Toward oxidizing gas NO₂, the resistance of the sensor based mainly on n-type WO₃ shows decrease behavior. Its peculiar response behavior and strong gas sensing ability at lower temperatures were elucidated theoretically using the results of first-principles calculations. The reduction of NO₂ into NO by surface oxygen vacancies of WO₃ and the following adsorption of NO on the surface of WO₃ lead to electron transfer from NO to WO₃, and the Fermi level shifts toward the conduction band, making the sensor exhibit the peculiar response behavior. The stronger adsorption capability of carbon dots toward NO₂ and a synergistic effect of carbon dots and WO₃ together make the sensor capable of working at lower temperatures and own higher sensitivity.

Pencil-on-Paper Humidity Sensor Treated with NaCl Solution for Health Monitoring and Skin Characterization

Although flexible humidity sensors are essential for human health monitoring, it is still challenging to achieve high sensitivity and easy disposal with simple, low-cost fabrication processes. This study presents the design and fabrication of highly reliable hand-drawn interdigital electrodes from pencil-on-paper treated with NaCl solution for highly sensitive hydration sensors working over a wide range of relative humidity (RH) levels from 5.6% to 90%. The applications of the resulting flexible humidity sensor go beyond the monitoring of respiratory rate and proximity to characterizations of human skin types and evaluations of skin barrier functions through insensible sweat measurements. The sensor array can also be integrated with a diaper to result in smart diapers to alert for an early diaper change. The design and fabrication strategies presented in this work could also be leveraged for the development of wearable, self-powered, and recyclable sensors and actuators in the future.

Recent advances in determination applications of emerging films based on nanomaterials

Sensitive and facile detection of analytes is crucial in various fields such as agriculture production, food safety, clinical diagnosis and therapy, and environmental monitoring. However, the synergy of complicated sample pretreatment and detection is an urgent challenge. By integrating the inherent porosity, processability and flexibility of films and the diversified merits of nanomaterials, nanomaterial-based films have evolved as preferred candidates to meet the above challenge. Recent years have witnessed the flourishment of films-based detection technologies due to their unique porous structures and integrated physical/chemical merits, which favors the separation/collection and detection of analytes in a rapid, efficient and facile way. In particular, films based on nanomaterials consisting of 0D metal-organic framework particles, 1D nanofibers and carbon nanotubes, and 2D graphene and analogs have drawn increasing attention due to incorporating new properties from nanomaterials. This paper summarizes the progress of the fabrication of emerging films based on nanomaterials and their detection applications in recent five years, focusing on typical electrochemical and optical methods. Some new interesting applications, such as point-of-care testing, wearable devices and detection chips, are proposed and emphasized. This review will provide insights into the integration and processability of films based on nanomaterials, thus stimulate further contributions towards films based on nanomaterials for high-performance analytical-chemistry-related applications.

Recent Progress on Anti-Humidity Strategies of Chemiresistive Gas Sensors

In recent decades, chemiresistive gas sensors (CGS) have been widely studied due to their unique advantages of expedient miniaturization, simple fabrication, easy operation, and low cost. As one ubiquitous interference factor, humidity dramatically affects the performance of CGS, which has been neglected for a long time. With the rapid development of technologies based on gas sensors, including the internet of things (IoT), healthcare, environment monitoring, and food quality assessing, the humidity interference on gas sensors has been attracting increasing attention. Inspiringly, various anti-humidity strategies have been proposed to alleviate the humidity interference in this field; however, comprehensive summaries of these strategies are rarely reported. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the latest research advances on humidity-independent CGS. First, we discussed the humidity interference mechanism on gas sensors. Then, the anti-humidity strategies mainly including surface engineering, physical isolation, working parameters modulation, humidity compensation, and developing novel gas-sensing materials were successively introduced in detail. Finally, challenges and perspectives of improving the humidity tolerance of gas sensors were proposed for future research.

Wearable Pressure Sensor Array with Layer-by-Layer Assembled MXene Nanosheets/Ag Nanoflowers for Motion Monitoring and Human-Machine Interfaces

Recently, wearable sensors and electronic skin systems have become prevalent, which can be employed to detect the movement status and physiological signals of wearers. Here, a pressure sensor composed of mesh-like micro-convex structure polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), MXene nanosheet/Ag nanoflower (AgNF) films, and flexible interdigital electrodes was designed by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. The unique microstructure of PDMS effectively increases the contact area and improves sensitivity. Moreover, AgNFs were introduced into the MXene as a "bridge," and the synergistic effect of the two further enhanced the performance of the sensor. The pressure sensor has high sensitivity (191.3 kPa^-1), good stability (18,000 cycles), fast response/recovery time (80 ms/90 ms), and low detection limit (8 Pa), so it can be used for all-round monitoring of the human body. Sensing arrays were integrated with a wireless transmitter as an intelligent artificial electronic skin for spatial pressure mapping and human-computer interaction sensing. Moreover, we develop a smart glove by a simple method, combining it with a 3D model for wireless accurate detection of hand poses. This provides ideas for hand somatosensory detection technology, leading to health monitoring, intelligent rehabilitation training, and personalized medicine.

Stretchable Sensors and Electro-Thermal Actuators with Self-Sensing Capability Using the Laser-Induced Graphene Technology

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) represents a fast-speed and low-cost method to prepare the customizable graphene-based patterns in complex configurations with exceptional electrical performance. This paper presents the applications of LIG formed on the commercial polyimide (PI) film as the stretchable strain sensor and electrical-actuated actuators. First, the conductive performances of the LIG were systematically revealed under different fabrication conditions via investigating the effects of processing parameters, and the fluence of the laser was experimentally demonstrated as the only crucial parameter to evaluate the LIG formation, facilitating the selection of optimized manufacturing parameters to prepare the LIG with desired electrical performances. Then, the LIG-based strain sensor which can undergo over 50% tensile strain was fabricated by transfer of the LIG from the PI film to polydimethylsiloxane. The variety of LIG-based electro-thermal actuators to achieve pre-designed 3D architectures was presented, along with their parameter analysis. After incorporating the multimeter system, the actuator can even feedback its transformation from 2D precursor to 3D architecture by monitoring the resistance variation of LIG, revealing the integrated capability of our design in serving as sensors and actuators. Finally, the wearable glove with the LIG sensors was presented to demonstrate its ability to remotely control the soft robotic hand.
