Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oral status is an important indicator of past lifestyles. Determining the presence and extent of oral pathologies helps reconstruct average oral health, paramasticatory activities and diet of ancient and historical populations. DESIGN In this study, the dental remains from the early medieval cemetery of Früebergstrasse in Baar (Canton of Zug, Switzerland) and the high medieval Dalheim cemetery (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) were analyzed. Caries, periodontal condition, periapical lesions, antemortem tooth loss, and enamel hypoplasia were assessed in 654 teeth (993 observable loci) from 68 individuals (Baar: n = 36; Dalheim: n = 32). RESULTS The oral status of both populations was affected by age with higher values of tooth wear in advanced age individuals. High tooth wear values in both populations point towards the consumption of abrasive foods. Pronounced anterior tooth wear in Baar may also be due to non-masticatory tooth usage. Finally, possible nutritional deficiencies were hypothesized for the Baar population. A higher caries prevalence was observed in the Baar group, probably due to differences in carbohydrate intake. The oral conditions observed in the two studied populations exhibited several analogies, suggesting comparable lifestyles despite their separation in space and time. The only differences observed are related to the use of teeth as "tools" and are thus determined by behavioral choices rather than diverse socioeconomic factors. CONCLUSIONS Using multiple dental parameters to examine the oral health of premodern individuals can provide useful insights into the interactions between humans and their environment, from dietary patterns to paramasticatory activities.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a disease of inflammation that affects the tissues supporting the periodontium. It is triggered by an immunological reaction of the gums to plaque, which leads to the destruction of periodontal attachment structures. Periodontitis is one of the most commonly recognized dental disorders in the world and a major factor in the loss of adult teeth. Scaling and root planing remain crucial for managing patients with persistent periodontitis. Nevertheless, exclusive reliance on mechanical interventions like periodontal surgery, extractions, and root planning is insufficient to halt the progression of periodontitis. In response to the problem of bacterial resistance, some researchers are committed to finding alternative therapies to antibiotics. In addition, some scholars focus on finding new materials to provide a powerful microenvironment for periodontal tissue regeneration and promote osteogenic repair. Nanoparticles possess distinct therapeutic qualities, including exceptional antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, immunomodulatory capacities, and the promotion of bone regeneration ability, which made them can be used for the treatment of periodontitis. However, there are many problems that limit the clinical translation of nanoparticles, such as toxic accumulation in cells, poor correlation between in vitro and in vivo, and poor animal-to-human transmissibility. In this paper, we review the present researches on nanoparticles in periodontitis treatment from the perspective of three main categories: inorganic nanoparticles, organic nanoparticles, and nanocomposites (including nanofibers, hydrogels, and membranes). The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive and recent update on nanoparticles-based therapies for periodontitis. The conclusion section summarizes the opportunities and challenges in the design and clinical translation of nanoparticles for the treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease and is the primary contributor to adult tooth loss. Diabetes exacerbates periodontitis, accelerates periodontal bone resorption. Thus, effectively managing periodontitis in individuals with diabetes is a long-standing challenge. This review introduces the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis, and analyzes the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and periodontitis. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the four pathological microenvironments influenced by diabetic periodontitis: high glucose microenvironment, bacterial infection microenvironment, inflammatory microenvironment, and bone loss microenvironment. The hydrogel design strategies and latest research development tailored to the four microenvironments of diabetic periodontitis are mainly focused on. Finally, the challenges and potential solutions in the treatment of diabetic periodontitis are discussed. We believe this review will be helpful for researchers seeking novel avenues in the treatment of diabetic periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is the major cause of mortality globally, with increasing evidence suggesting a link between periodontitis, and CVD. This study aims to explore the association between periodontitis and CVD, and the impact of periodontal therapy on cardiovascular health. METHODS This review synthesized findings from preclinical and clinical studies, without publication year restrictions, examining periodontitis and CVD through various lenses. Scientific databases were inspected with keywords related to periodontitis and CVD. RESULTS The review identifies a substantial association between periodontitis and an increased risk of several CVD, supported by both epidemiological and interventional studies. Results suggest the complexity of the relationship, influenced by factors like the severity of periodontitis and the presence of other systemic conditions. Clinical data indicates that periodontal therapy, particularly non-surgical periodontal therapy, may reduce systemic inflammatory markers and thus may play a role in the primary and secondary prevention of CVD events, highlighting the potential of periodontal therapy to not only maintain oral health but also to modulate cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence supports a significant association between periodontitis and increased cardiovascular risk, promoting integrated healthcare approaches that consider oral health as a key-component of cardiovascular care and wellbeing.

Abstract
Background Oral health is linked to physical and mental well-being. Oral disease is common among poor and socioeconomically disadvantaged people in developing and industrialized countries. Objectives This study assessed the oral health disease burden among people with multimorbidity in marginalized populations. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted across 16 locations in the slums of Karachi, Pakistan, to assess oral health disease problems among adults aged 18 to 70 with comorbidity or multimorbidity. The questionnaire covered the socioethnic, demographic, and disease status of people with oral health status. Data analyses were performed using SAS version 9.4. Results Of the 16 designated slum locations, 870 individuals were considered for oral health screening. Gingivitis was highly prevalent, 29% among slum dwellers with multimorbidity of diabetes, hepatitis, and hypertension. Dandasa was widely used as a tooth-cleansing agent in 35% of the study population. By contrast, 45.4% of people showed unsatisfactory oral hygiene conditions. Pathan ethnicity showed the highest prevalence (i.e., 29.8% of dental problems with disease multimorbidity in 26.8% of Baldia Town residents of Karachi). Of the 870 individuals, the highest frequency of dental problems was found in the age group of 18-38 years (28-42.9%) and among female participants (53.8%). Conclusion There is an urgent need for the global enhancement of public health programs, specifically focusing on implementing effective strategies to prevent oral illnesses, promote oral health, and address other chronic diseases in basic healthcare settings. Enhancing oral health poses significant difficulties, especially in less developed nations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The focal infection theory has been used to explain several chronic systemic diseases in the past. Systemic diseases were thought to be caused by focal infections, such as caries and periodontal diseases, and dentists were held responsible for these diseases due to the spread of oral infections. As knowledge of the interrelationship between oral microorganisms and the host immune response has evolved over the last few decades, the focal infection theory has been modified in various ways. The relationship between oral and systemic health appears to be more complex than that suggested by the classical theory of focal infections. Indeed, the contribution of the oral microbiota to some systemic diseases is gaining acceptance, as there are strong associations between periodontal disease and atherosclerotic vascular disease, diabetes, and hospital-associated pneumonia, amongst others. As many jurisdictions have various protocols for managing this oral-systemic axis of disease, we sought to provide a consensus on this notion with the help of a multidisciplinary team from the Czech Republic. METHODS A multidisciplinary team comprising physicians/surgeons in the specialities of dentistry, ear-nose and throat (ENT), cardiology, orthopaedics, oncology, and diabetology were quetioned with regard to their conceptual understanding of the focal infection theory particularly in relation to the oral-systemic axis. The team also established a protocol to determine the strength of these associations and to plan the therapeutic steps needed to treat focal odontogenic infections whenever possible. RESULTS Scoring algorithms were devised for odontogenic inflammatory diseases and systemic risks, and standardised procedures were developed for general use. CONCLUSIONS The designed algorithm of the oral-systemic axis will be helpful for all health care workers in guiding their patient management protocol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increasing proportion of older people in the population worldwide, with a large group being dependent on the care of others. Dependent older people are more vulnerable to oral diseases, which can heavily impact their quality of life (OHRQoL) and general health. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this systematic review was to comprehensively assess interventions to improve oral health or guarantee access and adherence to dental treatment of dependent older people. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and clinical trial registries. Two reviewers performed the selection, data extraction, risk of bias evaluation using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and assessment of certainty of the evidence. When possible, we conducted a meta-analysis to calculate effect estimates and their 95%CIs. Primary outcomes were OHRQoL, oral/dental health, and use of the oral care system. RESULTS We included a total of 30 randomised clinical trials assessing educational and non-educational interventions for community-dwelling older people (n = 2) and those residing in long-term care facilities (n = 28). Most studies assessed oral hygiene and showed that interventions may result in a reduction in dental plaque in the short term (with low certainty of evidence), but there is limited evidence for long-term effectiveness. Only one study assessed OHRQoL, and none evaluated changes in the use of the oral health care system. CONCLUSION Our findings do not provide strong conclusions in favour of any specific intervention, mainly due to study quality and imprecision. There is limited information about the long-term effect of interventions, and further research is needed, especially targeting community-dwelling older people. PROSPERO ID CRD42021231721.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Prevention complements the curative management of oral diseases. Effective preventive interventions involve the adoption of oral health promoting behaviours. Little is known about the awareness of oral disease and its prevention among Singaporean adults as well as their prevailing oral health attitudes and behaviours. The aim of the study was to describe the oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of adults in Singapore. METHODS A random sample of adults (≥21 years old) in Singapore was selected to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire gathered information about their knowledge of the aetiology, signs and symptoms as well as prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease; attitudes about the value of teeth, locus of control in maintaining oral health and oral health behaviours including toothbrushing, flossing and dental attendance. RESULTS A total of 1196 adults of weighted mean age 48 years old with almost equal proportions of males and females responded to the questionnaire. Participants were more unaware about the causes of periodontal disease (25.7%) than dental caries (4%). While more than 90% of participants felt that healthy teeth were important and could affect their overall health, many (67.0%) felt it was natural to lose their teeth with old age. Among the participants, 83.5% brushed their teeth twice a day; 41.9% flossed their teeth and 53.9% visited the dentist at least once a year. CONCLUSIONS The study findings showed good knowledge around dental caries but some gaps around periodontal disease. It also found that participants perceived having limited control over preventing tooth loss. Irregular dental attendance and poor denture wearing habits were also noted. The findings shed light on key areas to focus on through oral health promotion to improve overall oral health.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment in the expression of chemokine receptors, in individuals with Periodontitis, associated or not with Diabetes. Pilot study, which included patients (n = 45) with Periodontitis, associated (n = 25) or not (n = 20) with Diabetes, submitted to the non-surgical periodontal treatment for one month. The expression of chemokine receptors CCR2, CCR5, and CX3CR1 at the mRNA level was evaluated in the peripheral mononuclear cells, as well as the expression of these receptors at the protein level was verified in monocyte subtypes (classical, intermediate, and non-classical monocytes). There was higher expression of CCR2 and CCR5 receptors at the initial visit in the group with Diabetes, with no differences for CX3CR1 (p = 0.002; p = 0.018, and p = 0.896, respectively), without differences after treatment. There was higher expression of CCR2 and CCR5 proteins in the group with Diabetes at the initial visit for classical, intermediate, and nonclassical monocytes, with no differences for CX3CR1 (CCR2: p = 0.004; p = 0.026; p = 0.024; CCR5: 0.045; p = 0.045; p = 0.013; CX3CR1: p = 0.424; p = 0.944; p = 0.392, respectively), without differences after the end of treatment. Concerning each group separately, there were reductions in the expression of CCR2 as well as CCR5 in classical, intermediate, and nonclassical monocytes, and reduction of CX3CR1 in classical monocytes after treatment in the group with Diabetes (p = 0.003; p = 0.006; p = 0.039; p = 0.007; p = 0.006; p = 0.004; p = 0.019, respectively), without differences in the group without Diabetes. The expression of the chemokine receptors CCR2 and CCR5, in patients with Periodontitis associated with Diabetes, is favorably modified after the end of the non-surgical periodontal treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with cognitive decline when examined individually. To gain deeper insight into the combined effects of these conditions on cognitive decline, the present study aimed to examine the cognitive status of individuals with co-occurring T2DM and chronic periodontitis. METHODS We recruited 220 participants categorized into four groups: Group I, healthy subjects; Group II, individuals with chronic periodontitis; Group III, individuals with T2DM; and Group IV, individuals with both T2DM and chronic periodontitis. Medical histories were recorded for all participants, followed by periodontal examination and evaluation of cognitive status using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale. Finger dexterity was assessed using the nine-hole peg test. RESULTS A statistically significant increase in the proportion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was observed between groups I and IV (p<0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that, among the parameters assessed in this study, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was significant for age, finger dexterity scores, and co-occurrence of T2DM and periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest that the co-occurrence of chronic periodontitis and T2DM can have a detrimental effect on the cognitive abilities of an individual. Subsequent research should include longitudinal monitoring of the cognitive status in patients with concurrent conditions during treatment to gain deeper prognostic insights into the relationship between these co-occurring conditions and cognitive decline.

Abstract
To effectively address underlying issues and enhance the healing process of hard-to-treat soft tissue defects, innovative therapeutic approaches are required. One promising strategy involves the incorporation of bioactive substances into biodegradable scaffolds to facilitate synergistic tissue regeneration, particularly in vascular regeneration. In this study, we introduce a composite hydrogel design that mimics the extracellular matrix by covalently combining gelatin and hyaluronic acid (HA), with the encapsulation of deferoxamine nanoparticles (DFO NPs) for potential tissue regeneration applications. Crosslinked hydrogels were fabricated by controlling the ratio of HA in the gelatin-based hydrogels, resulting in improved mechanical properties, enhanced degradation ability, and optimised porosity, compared with hydrogel formed by gelatin alone. The DFO NPs, synthesized using a double emulsion method with poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide acid), exhibited a sustained release of DFO over 12 d. Encapsulating the DFO NPs in the hydrogel enabled controlled release over 15 d. The DFO NPs, composite hydrogel, and the DFO NPs loaded hydrogel exhibited excellent cytocompatibility and promoted cell proliferationin vitro. Subcutaneous implantation of the composite hydrogel and the DFO NPs loaded hydrogel demonstrated biodegradability, tissue integration, and no obvious adverse effects, evidenced by histological analysis. Furthermore, the DFO NPs loaded composite hydrogel exhibited accelerated wound closure and promoted neovascularisation and granular formation when tested in an excisional skin wound model in mice. These findings highlight the potential of our composite hydrogel system for promoting the faster healing of diabetes-induced skin wounds and oral lesions through its ability to modulate tissue regeneration processes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the capability of periodontal grading to estimate the progression of periodontal disease and the responsiveness to therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-four patients who underwent non-surgical therapy (NST) were included. Direct and indirect evidence of progression were determined according to the current classification. Responsiveness to therapy was examined using mean pocket probing depths reduction (PPDRed), reduction of bleeding on probing (BOPRed), and the rate of pocket closure (%PC) after six months. RESULTS Statistical analysis revealed no agreement between direct and indirect evidence in grading periodontitis (κ = 0.070). The actual rate of progression as determined by longitudinal data was underestimated in 13% (n = 11), overestimated in 51% (n = 43) and correctly estimated in 30% (n = 36) by indirect evidence. No significant differences in responsiveness to therapy were observed in patients graded according to direct evidence. Using indirect evidence, patients assigned grade C showed more PPDRed but less BOPRed and lower %PC compared to grade B. CONCLUSION The present data indicate that indirect evidence may lead to inaccuracies compared to direct evidence regarding the estimation of periodontal progression. However, indirect evidence seems to be more suitable in the estimation of responsiveness to therapy than direct evidence, helping to identify cases that are more likely to require additional therapies such as re-instrumentation or periodontal surgery. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Regarding the estimation of disease progression and responsiveness to periodontal therapy, accuracy and reliability of both direct and indirect evidence are limited when grading periodontitis.

Abstract
Severe periodontitis affects nearly 1 billion individuals worldwide, highlighting the need for early diagnosis. Here, an integrated system consisting of a microfluidic chip and a portable point-of-care (POC) diagnostic device is developed using a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) chip fabrication and a three-dimensional printing technique, which is automatically controlled by a custom-designed smartphone application to routinely assess the presence of a specific periodontitis biomarker, odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein (ODAM). A sandwich-type fluorescence aptasensor is developed on a microfluidic chip, utilizing aptamer pair (MB@OD64 and OD35@FAM) selectively binding to target ODAM. Then this microfluidic chip is integrated into an automated Internet of Things (IoT)-based POC device, where fluorescence intensity, as a signal, from the secondary aptamer binding to ODAM in a sandwich-type binding reaction on the microfluidic chip is measured by a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera with a 488 nm light-emitting diode (LED) excitation source. Obtained signals are processed by a microprocessor and visualized on a wirelessly connected smartphone application. This integrated biosensor system allows the rapid and accurate detection of ODAM within 30 min with a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 0.011 nM under buffer conditions. Clinical application is demonstrated by successfully distinguishing between low-risk and high-risk individuals with 100 % specificity. A strong potential in the translation of this fluorescence-based microfluidic aptasensor integrated with an IoT-based POC system is expected to be employed for non-invasive, on-site, rapid, and accurate ODAM detection, facilitating periodontitis diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to evaluate type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients' self-perceived periodontal health status and to identify the association between periodontal disease (PD) and DM. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 113 T1DM children between 3 and 18 years old from the Universiti Teknologi MARA and the University of Malaya. Periodontal health parameters, including plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth, simplified basic periodontal examination, and clinical attachment loss, were recorded. Self-perceived periodontal health status was assessed with questionnaires. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the sensitivity of the questionnaire and the relationship between T1DM and periodontal parameters. RESULTS The median age was 11.4 years. Half of them (50.4%) were females. A total of 83.5% rated their oral condition as good, whereas 27.5% reported a history of gingival bleeding. Clinical examination revealed that 48.7% had healthy gingiva, whereas 47.8% had gingivitis. The question "Do you have bleeding when brushing, flossing, or eating food?" showed good accuracy in the evaluation of PD (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The questionnaire has a high potential to be used by medical professionals in identifying T1DM patients at risk of PD to guide nondental health care providers in making appropriate referrals to dental services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to analyse the risk factors that affect oral health in adults and to evaluate the success of different machine learning algorithms in predicting these risk factors. METHODS This study included 2000 patients aged 18 years and older who were admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Gaziantep University, between September and December 2023. In this study, patients completed a 30-item questionnaire designed to assess the factors that affect the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT). Clinical and radiological examinations were performed, and DMFT scores were calculated after completion of the questionnaire. The obtained data were randomly divided into a 75% training group and a 25% test group. The preprocessed dataset was analysed using various machine learning algorithms, including naive Bayes, logistic regression, support vector machine, decision tree, random forest and Multilayer Perceptron algorithms. Pearson's correlation test was also conducted to assess the correlation between participants' DMFT scores and oral health risk factors. The performance of each algorithm was evaluated to determine the most appropriate algorithm, and model performance was assessed using accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score on the test dataset. RESULTS A statistically significant difference was found between various factors and DMFT-based risk groups (p < 0.05), including age, sex, body mass index, tooth brushing frequency, socioeconomic status, employment status, education level, marital status, hypertension, diabetes status, renal disease status, consumption of sugary snacks, dry mouth status and screen time. When considering machine learning algorithms for risk group assessments, the Multilayer Perceptron model demonstrated the highest level of success, achieving an accuracy of 95.8%, an F1-score of 96%, and precision and recall rates of 96%. CONCLUSIONS Caries risk assessment using a simple questionnaire can identify individuals at risk of dental caries, determine the key risk factors, provide information to help reduce the risk of dental caries over time and ensure follow-up. In addition, it is extremely important to apply effective preventive treatments and to prevent the general health problems that are caused by the deterioration of oral health. The results of this study show the potential of machine learning algorithms for predicting caries risk groups, and these algorithms are promising for future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The response of the host to plaque can be affected by systemic diseases like diabetes, hormonal changes, or immunological deficits, which can hasten the progression and severity of periodontitis. This study aimed to compare the activity of salivary matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in patients with moderate to severe generalized chronic generalized periodontitis between healthy individuals and those with type 2 diabetes who were referred to the Tabriz School of Dentistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this cross-sectional study, 90 patients were randomly divided into three groups based on inclusion and exclusion criteria: patients with chronic generalized periodontitis with diabetes, patients with generalized chronic periodontal disease with normal blood glucose, and a control group of 30 healthy individuals. Participants were instructed not to brush their teeth for 12 h and not to eat or drink for 90 min before saliva sampling. Saliva samples were immediately stored at -80°C and analyzed using an ELISA test. RESULTS The results showed that there was a significant difference in salivary MMP-8 levels among the three groups. Patients with periodontitis and diabetes had the highest levels of salivary MMP-8, while the control group had the lowest levels. This indicates that chronic generalized periodontitis is strongly associated with the activity level of salivary MMP-8, and elevated levels of MMP-8 in diabetic patients demonstrate the impact of diabetes on periodontal disease. CONCLUSION This study highlights the importance of monitoring salivary MMP-8 levels in patients with periodontitis, especially those with diabetes. It also emphasizes the need for proper management of systemic diseases to prevent or slow down the progression of periodontal disease.

Abstract
SUMMARY Heme (iron protoporphyrin IX, FePPIX) is the main source of iron and PPIX for host-associated pathogenic bacteria, including members of the Bacteroidota (formerly Bacteroidetes) phylum. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a keystone oral pathogen, uses a unique heme uptake (Hmu) system, comprising a hemophore-like protein, designated as the first member of the novel HmuY family. Compared to classical, secreted hemophores utilized by Gram-negative bacteria or near-iron transporter domain-based hemophores utilized by Gram-positive bacteria, the HmuY family comprises structurally similar proteins that have undergone diversification during evolution. The best characterized are P. gingivalis HmuY and its homologs from Tannerella forsythia (Tfo), Prevotella intermedia (PinO and PinA), Bacteroides vulgatus (Bvu), and Bacteroides fragilis (BfrA, BfrB, and BfrC). In contrast to the two histidine residues coordinating heme iron in P. gingivalis HmuY, Tfo, PinO, PinA, Bvu, and BfrA preferentially use two methionine residues. Interestingly, BfrB, despite conserved methionine residue, binds the PPIX ring without iron coordination. BfrC binds neither heme nor PPIX in keeping with the lack of conserved histidine or methionine residues used by other members of the HmuY family. HmuY competes for heme binding and heme sequestration from host hemoproteins with other members of the HmuY family to increase P. gingivalis competitiveness. The participation of HmuY in the host immune response confirms its relevance in relation to the survival of P. gingivalis and its ability to induce dysbiosis not only in the oral microbiome but also in the gut microbiome or other host niches, leading to local injuries and involvement in comorbidities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Describe a method in a real-world setting to identify persons with undiagnosed prediabetes and type 2 diabetes through an interprofessional collaboration between Public Dental Services and Primary Health Care in Regions Stockholm. DESIGN A descriptive observational study. SETTING The study was conducted at seven sites in the region of Stockholm, Sweden. Each collaborating site consisted of a primary health clinic and dental clinic. SUBJECTS Study participants included adults over 18 years of age who visited the Public Dental Services and did not have a medical history of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Selective screening is conducted in accordance with a risk assessment protocol at the Public Dental Services. In the investigated method, DentDi (Dental and Diabetes), adults diagnosed with caries and/or periodontitis over a cut-off value are referred to the Primary Health Care clinic for screening of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. RESULTS DentDi, introduced at seven sites, between the years 2017 and 2020, all of which continue to use the method today. A total of 863 participants from the Public Dental Services were referred to the Primary Health Care. Of those 396 accepted the invitation to undergo screening at the primary health care centre. Twenty-four individuals did not meet the inclusion criteria, resulting in a total of 372 persons being included in the study. Among the 372 participants, 27% (101) had elevated glucose levels, of which 12 were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 89 with prediabetes according to the study classification. CONCLUSIONS DentDi is a feasible method of interprofessional collaboration where each profession contributes with the competence included in everyday clinical practice for early identification of persons with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes with a complete chain of care. The goal is to disseminate this method throughout Stockholm County and even other regions in Sweden.

Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal conditions may increase the susceptibility of individuals to various systemic illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by a gradual onset and progressive deterioration, making it the primary cause of dementia, although the exact cause of the disease remains elusive. Both Alzheimer's disease and periodontitis share risk factors and clinical studies comparing the associations and occurrence of periodontitis among individuals with Alzheimer's disease have suggested a potential correlation between these conditions. Brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease have substantiated the existence of microorganisms related to periodontitis, especially Porphyromonas gingivalis, which produces neurotoxic gingipains and may present the capability to breach the blood-brain barrier. Treponema denticola may induce tau hyperphosphorylation and lead to neuronal apoptosis. Lipopolysaccharides-components of bacterial cell membranes and mediators of inflammation-also have an impact on brain function. Further research could unveil therapeutic approaches targeting periodontal pathogens to potentially alleviate AD progression.

Abstract
Salivary turbidity is a promising indicator for evaluating oral hygiene. This study proposed a wearable mouthguard-type sensor for continuous and unconstrained measurement of salivary turbidity. The sensor evaluated turbidity by measuring the light transmittance of saliva with an LED and a phototransistor sealed inside a double-layered mouthguard. The sensor was also embedded with a Bluetooth wireless module, enabling the wireless measurement of turbidity. The mouthguard materials (polyethylene terephthalate-glycol and ethylene-vinyl acetate) and the wavelength of the LED (405 nm) were experimentally determined to achieve high sensitivity in salivary turbidity measurement. The turbidity quantification characteristic of the proposed sensor was evaluated using a turbidity standard solution, and the sensor was capable of turbidity quantification over a wide dynamic range of 1-4000 FTU (formazine turbidity unit), including reported salivary turbidity (400-800 FTU). In vitro turbidity measurement using a saliva sample showed 553 FTU, which is equivalent to the same sample measured with a spectrophotometer (576 FTU). Moreover, in vivo experiments also showed results equivalent to that measured with a spectrophotometer, and wireless measurement of salivary turbidity was realized using the mouthguard-type sensor. Based on these results, the proposed mouthguard-type sensor has promising potential for the unconstrained continuous evaluation of oral hygiene.

Abstract
Monocytes and their macrophage progeny are thought to be involved in tissue and alveolar bone destruction in periodontal disease. It has been documented that the proportion of (CD14 + CD16+) non-classical monocytes in the blood are elevated in chronic periodontitis;A total of 20 chronic generalized periodontitis patients who were otherwise healthy, were recruited for this study. At baseline and 3 weeks after non-surgical periodontal treatment, peripheral blood was obtained to assess the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and the proportion of monocyte subsets. Monocyte subsets were assessed using flow cytometry;The mean percentage of CD14 + CD16+ non-classical monocytes in the peripheral blood sample at baseline was 13.95 + 2.09, that reduced to 8.94 + 1.23 3 weeks after non-surgical treatment. A distinct significant reduction in the percentage of non-classical monocytes and a concomitant increase in classical monocytes were observed following periodontal treatment compared to baseline. There was a significant reduction in the all the periodontal parameters and CRP levels 3 weeks post non-surgical periodontal treatment. A positive correlation between CRP and percentage of non-classical monocytes was also observed; Periodontal treatment potentially modulates the host response effectively.

Abstract
AIM To examine the effect of periodontitis on the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and MetS components. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 4761 participants aged 30-74 years who underwent health examinations at both baseline and 8-year follow-up. The Japanese MetS criteria were used for diagnosis. The Community Periodontal Index was used to assess periodontal status. The association between periodontal status and MetS incidence was examined by Poisson regression analysis. RESULTS Multivariate analysis revealed that individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had a significantly higher relative risk (RR) for MetS onset, as compared to individuals without deep periodontal pockets (adjusted RR 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.67). Compared to individuals without a deep periodontal pocket, individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had significantly higher RRs for developing two components of MetS; the RRs were 1.25 (95% CI: 1.01-1.56) for abdominal obesity and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.03-1.86) for hyperglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with periodontitis had a significantly higher risk of MetS onset, possibly due to the influence of periodontitis on abdominal obesity and hyperglycaemia.

Abstract
Prior studies demonstrated an equivocal conclusion about the association between the level of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4)/visfatin and periodontitis patients with obesity. The aim of our study (Prospero ID: CRD42023469058) was to systematically review the available articles linking the biofluid levels of RBP4/visfatin to the comorbidity of periodontitis and obesity. Clinical trials were screened in accordance with specific inclusion criteria from seven databases up to November 2023. A quality assessment was performed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and ROBINS-I tools for observational and interventional trials, respectively. The standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) related to the RBP4 level was recorded; the other indicators related to the visfatin level were measured via the mean difference (MD) with the corresponding 95% CI, and Fisher's Z transformation was measured to reveal the association using Review Manager 5.4. The current evidence was based on five observational studies and two interventional studies. All of them were included in the systematic review, and six of them were in the meta-analysis. Statistical analysis indicated that there was no significant difference in the circulating levels of RBP4 in the periodontitis patients with obesity or without, who were labeled as OP or NP, respectively (155 OP-107 NP: SMD = 1.38; 95% CI: -0.18-2.94, p = 0.08), as well as the periodontal healthy patients with a normal weight, who were labelled as NnP (116 OP-79 NnP: SMD = 6.76; 95% CI: -5.34-18.87, p = 0.27). Meanwhile, a significant higher level of serum visfatin was found in the OP patients than that of the NP (86 OP-45 NP: MD = 4.21; 95% CI: 2.65-5.77, p < 0.00001)/NnP (164 OP-88 NnP: MD = 13.02; 95% CI: 7.34-18.70, p < 0.00001) group. In addition, a positive association was observed between the serum RBP4 and body mass index/clinical attachment loss (CAL). And, then, there was a positive association between the serum visfatin and periodontal parameters, including the probing depth, CAL, and plaque index, as well as metabolic parameters, including the total cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Here, the circulating RBP4 level was not independently related to the comorbidity of periodontitis and obesity, while serum visfatin was significantly associated with periodontitis and obesity. Notably, the positive association between circulating RBP4/visfatin and the periodontal parameters/metabolic parameters firmly suggested that the higher severity of the obese or periodontal status was associated with an elevated level of serum visfatin or RBP4 in the OP group. With more rigorous longitudinal research, the exact causations between RBP4/visfatin and the patients affected by obesity and periodontitis could be disentangled. RBP4 and visfatin might be novel, enlightening prospective bio-indexes for the targeted treatment of comorbidities.

Abstract
It has been well documented that there is a two-way relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis. Diabetes mellitus represents an established risk factor for chronic periodontitis. Conversely, chronic periodontitis adversely modulates serum glucose levels in diabetic patients. Activated immune and inflammatory responses are noted during diabetes and periodontitis, under the modulation of similar biological mediators. These activated responses result in increased activity of certain immune-inflammatory mediators including adipokines and microRNAs in diabetic patients with periodontal disease. Notably, certain microbes in the oral cavity were identified to be involved in the occurrence of diabetes and periodontitis. In other words, these immune-inflammatory mediators and microbes may potentially serve as biomarkers for risk assessment and therapy selection in diabetes and periodontitis. In this review, we briefly provide an updated overview on different potential biomarkers, providing novel diagnostic and therapeutic insights on periodontal complications and diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease caused by plaque that leads to alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. Inflammation control and achieving better tissue repair are the key to periodontitis treatment. In this study, human β-Defensin 1 short motif Pep-B with inflammation inhibition and differentiation regulation properties, is firstly used in the treatment of periodontitis, and an injectable photopolymerizable Pep-B/chitosan methacryloyl composite hydrogel (CMSA/Pep-B) is constructed. We confirm that Pep-B improves inflammation, and restores osteogenic behavior and function of injured stem cells. CMSA/Pep-B has good injectability, fluidity and photopolymerizability, and can sustainably release Pep-B to maintain drug concentration in periodontal pockets. Furthermore, animal experiments showed that CMSA/Pep-B significantly ameliorated the inflammation of the periodontium and reduced the alveolar bone loss by decreasing inflammatory infiltration, osteoclast formation and collagen destruction. In conclusion, CMSA/Pep-B is envisaged to be a novel bioactive material or therapeutic drug for treating periodontitis.

Abstract
Background Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, is triggered by the plaque biofilm culminating in periodontal attachment loss, bone loss, and tooth loss. Diabetes, a globally prevalent disease, causes an increased inflammatory response to the microflora associated with periodontitis. It has been observed that the link between these two diseases is bidirectional. Tissue repair is impaired in diabetic patients with periodontitis. Local drug delivery systems selectively target the inflamed sites contrary to systemic antibiotics which lead to resistance and many other adverse effects. Probiotics aid in the growth of beneficial microorganisms and have immunomodulatory effects on the host. Tetracyclines have anti-collagenase properties and reduce the bacterial load, curbing the progression of periodontitis. Interleukin (IL) 1β, a strong marker of periodontal tissue destruction, plays a pivotal role in inflammation, immune regulation, and bone resorption in periodontitis. This study evaluated and compared the benefits of probiotics and tetracycline fibers when used as adjunctive tools after scaling and root planing (SRP) on IL1β levels in type 2 diabetic patients with periodontitis. Methodology A total of 36 patients participated in this study. Group I included 12 patients with periodontitis and uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c levels >7). After SRP, six patients received tetracycline fibers (IA), and six patients received probiotics (1B) as locally delivered agents. Group II included 12 patients with periodontitis and diabetes under control (HbA1c levels 6-7%). After SRP, six patients received tetracycline fibers (IIA), and six patients received probiotics (IIB) as locally delivered drugs (test groups). Group III, the control group, included 12 patients with periodontitis only, wherein a placebo was used as a local drug delivery (LDD) after SRP. The clinical parameters, such as plaque index, gingival index, and probing pocket depth, were recorded preoperatively and at eight and 12 weeks after non-surgical periodontal therapy. IL1β levels were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at baseline and six weeks after SRP. Results On intra and intergroup comparison, all groups showed improvement in both the clinical and biochemical parameters but significant results were seen in Group IIA (p < 0.01) when compared to the other groups. Conclusions Group II (well-controlled diabetics) performed significantly better than the other groups, which was followed by Group III. The use of LDDs as adjunctive tools after SRP was not beneficial in Group I (uncontrolled diabetics).

Abstract
Introduction Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease caused by periodontopathic bacteria and influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic predispositions are found to play a crucial part in the onset and progression of periodontal disease. There is a two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontitis with severe periodontal tissue destruction seen in diabetic patients. Antimicrobial peptide, β-defensin-1 (DEFB1 gene), plays an important role in the innate immune responses and forms the first line of host defense against periodontal pathogens. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the specific genetic loci of the DEFB1 gene and its expression level could confer a degree of risk or protection from periodontitis associated with diabetes. The present study determined the association between SNPs at the 5' untranslated region (UTR) in the DEFB1 gene and susceptibility to periodontitis associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and analyzed the effect of 5' UTR polymorphisms on DEFB1 gene expression. Methods SNPs in the 5' UTR of the DEFB1 gene (-20G>A (rs11362), -44C>G (rs1800972), and -52G>A (rs1799946)) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by Sanger sequencing. The study group included periodontitis (n = 40), periodontitis with T2DM (n = 20), and periodontally and systemically healthy as controls (n = 40). DEFB1 gene expression was determined by real-time PCR in the study group comprising periodontitis (n = 20), periodontitis with T2DM (n = 15), and healthy controls (n = 20). The effect of 5' UTR polymorphisms on the expression was analyzed by statistical tools. Results Statistically significant higher prevalence of the variant AA genotype of rs11362 was observed in periodontitis (odds ratio (OR) = 3.64, 95% confidence Interval (CI) = 1.16-11.43, p = 0.04) and periodontitis with T2DM (OR = 5.14, 95% CI = 1.29-20.5, p = 0.03) in comparison with healthy controls. Moreover, there was a significant increase of the variant AA genotype of rs1799946 in periodontitis (OR = 3.88, 95% CI = 1.19-12.68, p = 0.04) compared to healthy controls. DEFB1 gene expression was downregulated in periodontitis and upregulated in periodontitis with T2DM patients when compared to healthy controls but was not statistically significant. No significant association was found for the effect of SNPs of the DEFB1 gene on its expression. Conclusion From the SNP analysis, it can be inferred that the presence of SNPs at the 5' UTR (rs11362 and rs1799946) in the DEFB1 gene may be an important predictive factor for periodontitis.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent health issue escalating worldwide that gives rise to numerous problems. Periodontal disorders are recognized as the sixth consequence associated with diabetes mellitus. Research shows that dental health affects overall health, and this knowledge is changing the dental field. The correct choice of glucose goal levels and the optimal selection of glucose-lowering medications are determined by a comprehensive geriatric assessment, an estimate of life expectancy, and a rationale for therapy at regular intervals in elderly diabetics. This article provides an overview of the correlation between diabetes and oral health, with a specific emphasis on xerostomia, periodontal disease, and dental caries. Thus, dentists play a significant role within the allied health profession by contributing to the provision of oral care for those diagnosed with diabetes, with a special focus on geriatric patients.

Abstract
Periodontitis, the sixth most prevalent epidemic disease globally, profoundly impacts oral aesthetics and masticatory functionality. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), an oxygen-dependent transcriptional activator, has emerged as a pivotal regulator in periodontal tissue and alveolar bone metabolism, exerts critical functions in angiogenesis, erythropoiesis, energy metabolism, and cell fate determination. Numerous essential phenotypes regulated by HIF are intricately associated with bone metabolism in periodontal tissues. Extensive investigations have highlighted the central role of HIF and its downstream target genes and pathways in the coupling of angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Within this concise perspective, we comprehensively review the cellular phenotypic alterations and microenvironmental dynamics linking HIF to periodontitis. We analyze current research on the HIF pathway, elucidating its impact on bone repair and regeneration, while unraveling the involved cellular and molecular mechanisms. Furthermore, we briefly discuss the potential application of targeted interventions aimed at HIF in the field of bone tissue regeneration engineering. This review expands our biological understanding of the intricate relationship between the HIF gene and bone angiogenesis in periodontitis and offers valuable insights for the development of innovative therapies to expedite bone repair and regeneration.

Abstract
AIMS This study described the influence of a large-group simulation on social and health care students´ working life competence concerning interprofessional collaboration (IPC) and patient centered-care. METHODS AND RESULTS The target group (n = 319) was social and health care students from several different degree programs taking part in a large-group simulation concerning older people´s oral health as a part of his comprehensive well-being and health. Data were collected with a questionnaire containing background questions, statements about interprofessional practice and open-ended questions about learning experiences. The number of respondents was 257, including 51 oral health care students (OHCS). The data were analyzed using descriptive and statistical methods and content analysis. Working life competencies covers the overall social and collaborative skills which health-care professionals need in their work. They were reported to be improved in IPC and patient-centered care (PCC). The main described learning experiences in open responses included appreciating different professionals' competencies and the importance of interprofessional decision-making, interpersonal communication competence and patient-centered attitudes in care provision. CONCLUSION The large-group simulation is a good model for educating larger student groups simultaneously and it functioned well in improving understanding of IPC and PCC among older adults.

Abstract
Recent research has confirmed the strong connection between imbalances in the oral and gut microbiome (oral-gut dysbiosis), periodontitis, and inflammatory conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and cardiovascular diseases. Microbiome modulation is crucial for preventing and treating several autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis. However, the causal relationships between the microbiome and its derived metabolites that mediate periodontitis and chronic inflammation constitute a notable knowledge gap. Here we review the mechanisms involved in the microbiome-host crosstalk, and describe novel precision medicine for the control of systemic inflammation. As microbiome-targeted therapies begin to enter clinical trials, the success of these approaches relies upon understanding these reciprocal microbiome-host interactions, and it may provide new therapeutic avenues to reduce the risk of periodontitis-associated diseases.

Abstract
Neutrophils represent the primary defense against microbial threats playing a pivotal role in maintaining tissue homeostasis. This review examines the multifaceted involvement of neutrophils in periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the supporting structures of teeth summarizing the contribution of neutrophil dysfunction in periodontitis and periodontal-related comorbidities. Periodontitis, a pathological condition promoted by dysbiosis of the oral microbiota, is characterized by the chronic inflammation of the gingiva and subsequent tissue destruction. Neutrophils are among the first immune cells recruited to the site of infection, releasing antimicrobial peptides, enzymes, and reactive oxygen species to eliminate pathogens. The persistent inflammatory state in periodontitis can lead to aberrant neutrophil activation and a sustained release of proinflammatory mediators, finally resulting in tissue damage, bone resorption, and disease progression. Growing evidence now points to the correlation between periodontitis and systemic comorbidities. Indeed, the release of inflammatory mediators, immune complexes, and oxidative stress by neutrophils, bridge the gap between local and systemic immunity, thus highlighting neutrophils as key players in linking periodontal inflammation to chronic conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and rheumatoid arthritis. This review underscores the crucial role of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and the complex link between neutrophil dysfunction, local inflammation, and systemic comorbidities. A comprehensive understanding of neutrophil contribution to periodontitis development and their impact on periodontal comorbidities holds significant implications for the management of oral health. Furthermore, it highlights the need for the development of novel approaches aimed at limiting the persistent recruitment and activation of neutrophils, also reducing the impact of periodontal inflammation on broader health contexts, offering promising avenues for improved disease management and patient care.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), a key pathogen in periodontal diseases, is also associated with hyperglycemia-associated systemic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM). Gingipains are the most important endotoxins of P. gingivalis, and in vivo studies using gingipains are scarce. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a vertebrate with high physiological and genetic homology with humans that has multiple co-orthologs for human genes, including inflammation-related proteins. The aim of our study was to determine the effects of gingipain in a hyperglycemia-induced zebrafish model by evaluating inflammation, oxidant-antioxidant status, and the cholinergic system. Adult zebrafish were grouped into the control group (C), hyperglycemia-induced group subjected to 15 days of overfeeding (OF), gingipain-injected group (GP), and gingipain-injected hyperglycemic group (OF + GP). At the end of 15 days, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed, and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were measured. Lipid peroxidation (LPO), nitric oxide (NO), glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase, catalase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and sialic acid (SA) levels were determined spectrophotometrically in the hepatopancreas. The expression levels of tnf-⍺, il-1β, ins, crp, and the acute phase protein YKL-40 analogs chia.5 and chia.6 were evaluated by RT‒PCR. After two weeks of overfeeding, significantly increased weight gain, FBG, and OGTT confirmed that the zebrafish were hyperglycemic. Increased oxidative stress, inflammation, and AChE and ALP activities were observed in both the overfeeding and GP groups. Amplification of inflammation and oxidative stress was evident in the OF + GP group through increased expression of crp, il-1β, chia.5, and chia.6 and increased LPO and NO levels. Our results support the role of gingipains in the increased inflammatory response in hyperglycemia-associated diseases.

Abstract
Some heavy metals are associated with periodontitis; whereas most of these associations have focused on individual metal, there are no specific studies on the effects of combined heavy metal exposure on periodontitis. We conducted an analysis on the association between urinary heavy metal exposure and periodontitis in participants aged 30 years and older using multiple logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). This analysis was performed on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2014. The study found that using logistic regression, the 4th quartile of urinary lead and molybdenum and the 3rd quartile of urinary strontium were positively associated with periodontitis compared to the reference quartile after adjusting for covariates. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was 1.738 (1.069-2.826), 1.515 (1.025-2.239), and 1.498 (1.010-2.222), respectively. The 3rd and 4th quartiles of urinary cobalt were negatively associated with periodontitis, and their ORs and 95% CIs were 0.639 (0.438-0.934) and 0.571 (0.377-0.964), respectively. The BKMR model showed that urinary barium, lead, and molybdenum were positively associated with periodontitis in a range of concentrations and urinary cobalt, manganese, tin, and strontium were negatively correlated with periodontitis. Furthermore, the overall association between urinary heavy metals and periodontitis was positive. Our study provides evidence for an association between exposure to multiple urinary heavy metals and periodontitis. However, further longitudinal studies are needed to explore the specific mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common chronic bacteria-initiated inflammatory disease that is closely associated with various systemic diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Periodontitis and COPD share similar risk factors, pathology and microorganisms. Epidemiological and clinical research have shown positive correlation between the two diseases. Individuals with severe periodontitis had a higher risk of developing COPD. Moreover, the relative risk of COPD in severe periodontitis was much higher compared to people without periodontal disease and patients with mild to moderate periodontitis. COPD patients with periodontitis had a higher frequency of COPD exacerbation and periodontal treatment demonstrated some control of COPD. However, the nature of periodontitis affecting COPD still needs further exploration. Periodontitis caused microbial and immune imbalances of the lung through several aspects: (I) under periodontitis status, periodontal pathogens directly caused the lung inflammatory reaction after inhalation and colonization on the lung, (II) periodontitis status promoted the oral colonization of pneumonia-associated pathogens, (III) periodontitis status affected the respiratory epithelium structure and (IV) periodontitis status caused imbalances in neutrophils, macrophages and inflammatory cytokines. In this review, we conclude the association between periodontitis and COPD through several aspects and further discuss the potential mechanism by which periodontitis affects COPD.

Abstract
Periodontal disease is a complex and progressive chronic inflammatory condition that leads to the loss of alveolar bone and teeth. It has been associated with various systemic diseases, including diabetes mellitus and obesity, among others. Some of these conditions are part of the metabolic syndrome cluster, a group of interconnected systemic diseases that significantly raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. The metabolic syndrome cluster encompasses central obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and hypertension. In this review, our objective is to investigate the correlation between periodontal disease and the components and outcomes of the metabolic syndrome cluster. By doing so, we aim to gain insights into the fundamental mechanisms that link each systemic condition with the metabolic syndrome. This deeper understanding of the interplay between these conditions and periodontal disease can pave the way for more effective treatments that take into account the broader impact of managing periodontal disease on the comprehensive treatment of systemic diseases, and vice versa.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a main risk factor for periodontitis, but until now, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Diabetes can increase the pathogenicity of the periodontal microbiota and the inflammatory/host immune response of the periodontium. Hyperglycemia induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and enhances oxidative stress (OS), exacerbating periodontal tissue destruction. Furthermore, the alveolar bone resorption damage and the epigenetic changes in periodontal tissue induced by diabetes may also contribute to periodontitis. We will review the latest clinical data on the evidence of diabetes promoting the susceptibility of periodontitis from epidemiological, molecular mechanistic, and potential therapeutic targets and discuss the possible molecular mechanistic targets, focusing in particular on novel data on inflammatory/host immune response and OS. Understanding the intertwined pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and periodontitis can explain the cross-interference between endocrine metabolic and inflammatory diseases better, provide a theoretical basis for new systemic holistic treatment, and promote interprofessional collaboration between endocrine physicians and dentists.

OBJECTIVES To assess if the results following intake of a diet using an Okinawan-based Nordic diet (OBND) over one month differs in endocrinological, periodontal clinical outcome, and serum cytokine levels compared to a standard hospital care diet in individuals with diabetes type 2 (T2D) (control group). BACKGROUND Scientific evidence suggests that the use of diet for individuals with T2D may be beneficial. METHODS Participating individuals with T2D were randomly assigned to a test (OBND) (n = 14), or control group (n = 16). Anthropometric data, blood glucose levels, HbA1c levels, lipids, serum inflammation markers (CRP, and a routine panel of 24 cytokines), blood pressure, gingival bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depths (PPD), and clinical attachment levels (CAL) were studied. RESULTS Statistical analyses of baseline study data failed to demonstrate study group differences. The mean weight reduction was greater in the OBND group (4.1 kg) versus the control group (1.3 kg) (p < 0.01). The reduction in BMI was 1.4 kg/m2 in OBND (p < 0.001) and 0.5 kg/m2 in the control group, respectively (p < 0.01). Diastolic and systolic blood pressure reductions were greater in the OBND group than in the control group (p < 0.01). Periodontal study parameters (BOP % scores) and (PPD values) decreased (p < 0.001) overall with no between group differences. The OBND resulted in reduction of serum levels of IFNγ, Eotaxin IL-9, IP10,IL17a, MCP-1,m and PDFBB compared to the control diet. CONCLUSIONS A strict T2D- diet provides an association between reduction in serum HbA1c and BOP scores. Serum levels decreases in IFNγ, Eotaxin IL-9, IP-10, IL17a. MCP-1, and PDFBB were only found in the test group.

Abstract
AIMS To examine whether simple measures of oral health are associated with incident diabetes. METHODS This prospective cohort study linked data from the 45 and Up Study, Australia, to administrative health records. The study participants were 213,389 men and women, aged ≥ 45 years, with no diabetes at baseline. The oral health of participants was assessed by questionnaire. Incident diabetes cases were ascertained based on self-report in follow-up questionnaires, linked data on medical and pharmaceutical claims, and hospitalisation data up until 2019. The association between oral health and incident diabetes were calculated using multivariable cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS During 2,232,215 person-years of follow-up, 20,487 (9.6%) participants developed diabetes. Compared with those with ≥20 teeth, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for incident diabetes was 1.12 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.08, 1.17) for 10-19 teeth, 1.20 (1.14, 1.26) for 1-9 teeth and 1.15 (1.09, 1.21) for no teeth. Compared with those with excellent/very good teeth and gums, the aHR for incident diabetes was 1.07 (1.03, 1.12) for fair and 1.13 (1.07, 1.20) for poor teeth and gums. CONCLUSIONS Simple measures of oral health were associated with risk of developing diabetes, demonstrating the potential importance of oral health screening for diabetes prevention.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been shown to be a clinical risk factor for bone diseases including osteoporosis and fragility. Bone metabolism is a complicated process that requires coordinated differentiation and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Owing to the regenerative properties, BMSCs have laid a robust foundation for their clinical application in various diseases. However, mounting evidence indicates that the osteogenic capability of BMSCs is impaired under high glucose conditions, which is responsible for diabetic bone diseases and greatly reduces the therapeutic efficiency of BMSCs. With the rapidly increasing incidence of DM, a better understanding of the impacts of hyperglycemia on BMSCs osteogenesis and the underlying mechanisms is needed. In this review, we aim to summarize the current knowledge of the osteogenesis of BMSCs in hyperglycemia, the underlying mechanisms, and the strategies to rescue the impaired BMSCs osteogenesis.

Abstract
Aims The objectives of this study were to identify clinical predictors of the Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinical index for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, develop a clinical prediction model, and construct a nomogram. Methods We collected the TCM clinical index from 3590 T2DM recruited at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 2019 to October 2020. The participants were randomly assigned to either the training group (n = 3297) or the validation group (n = 1426). TCM symptoms and tongue characteristics were used to assess the risk of developing DPN in T2DM patients. Through 5-fold cross-validation in the training group, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis method was used to optimize variable selection. In addition, using multifactor logistic regression analysis, a predictive model and nomogram were developed. Results A total of eight independent predictors were found to be associated with the DPN in multivariate logistic regression analyses: advanced age of grading (odds ratio/OR 1.575), smoke (OR 2.815), insomnia (OR 0.557), sweating (OR 0.535), loose teeth (OR 1.713), dry skin (OR 1.831), purple tongue (OR 2.278). And dark red tongue (OR 0.139). The model was constructed using these eight predictor's medium discriminative capabilities. The area under the curve (AUC) of the training set is 0.727, and the AUC of the validation set is 0.744 on the ROC curve. The calibration plot revealed that the model's goodness-of-fit is satisfactory. Conclusions We established a TCM prediction model for DPN in patients with T2DM based on the TCM clinical index.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic inflammation and cumulative oxidative stress have been theorized as two common pathways of the interconnection between periodontitis and diabetes. Improvement in oxidizing status has been demonstrated in periodontal patients with diabetes treated with proper non-surgical periodontal treatment. In addition to periodontal treatment, Gaseous ozone therapy has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties and the ability to stimulate the endogenous antioxidant defence mechanism. To date, the antioxidant effect of gaseous ozone, in addition with periodontal treatment in diabetic patients, has been examined in only one study. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of gaseous ozone therapy as an alternative approach to supporting non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT), aimed at improving antioxidant machinery and interfering with ROS production on plasma levels in diabetic individuals diagnosed with moderate or severe periodontitis. METHODS One hundred and eighty patients with periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly assigned to receive non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) plus gaseous ozone therapy (A) NSPT alone (B). Clinical and periodontal parameters -Bleeding on probing (BOP), Periodontal pocket depth (PPD), and Clinical attachment Level (CAL)- and plasma levels of oxidant-antioxidant (TOS- TAOS) levels, glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were recorded at baseline and at 3- (T1) and at 6-months (T2) after treatment. RESULTS Both treatments were efficacious in reducing clinical parameters. However, there were no significant differences regarding oxidative stress parameters in group A compared to group B. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, gaseous ozone therapy did not enhance the effect of periodontal treatment in reducing oxidative stress in plasma levels of periodontitis patients with type II diabetes. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study was registered with ISRCTN1728169 (23/07/2022).

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with multifactorial aetiology. The relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerotic, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive disorders has been the subject of many studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on periodontal health in patients suffering from periodontitis and type 2 diabetes. The study was conducted with 14 patients. A total of 369 periodontal pockets in the study group and 431 in the control group were examined. For further analysis, the pockets were classified as moderately deep (4-5 mm) and deep (≥6 mm). All patients received standard non-surgical treatment: scaling and root planing (SRP). Additionally, a series of 30 hyperbaric chamber sessions was carried out in the study group. The following parameters were compared between groups: PD (probing depth), CAL (clinical attachment level), and BOP (bleeding on probing). The results of the study showed significantly better results in terms of PD reduction and CAL gain in the study group in comparison to the control group. Both groups showed a reduction in BOP (bleeding on probing) after treatment. The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy seems to have considerable benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Establishing enzyme-free sensing assays with great selectivity and sensitivity for glucose and H2O2 detection has been highly required in biological science. In particular, the exploitation of nanomaterials by using noble metals of high conductivity and surface area has been widely investigated to act as selective catalytic agents for molecular recognition in sensing platforms. Several approaches for a straightforward, speedy, selective, and sensitive recognition of glucose and H2O2 were requested. This paper reviews the current progress in electrochemical detection using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for H2O2 and glucose recognition. We have reviewed the latest electrochemical sensing assays for in-place detection with priorities including straightforward procedure and manipulation, high sensitivity, varied linear range, and economic prospects. The mentioned sensing assays apply electrochemical systems through a rapid detection time that enables real-time recognition. In profitable fields, the obstacles that have been associated with sample preparation and tool expense can be solved by applying these sensing means. Some parameters, including the impedance, intensity, and potential difference measurement methods have permitted low limit of detections (LODs) and noticeable durations in agricultural, water, and foodstuff samples with high levels of glucose and H2O2.

Abstract
In situ bioprinting provides a reliable solution to the problem of in vitro tissue culture and vascularization by printing tissue directly at the site of injury or defect and maturing the printed tissue using the natural cell microenvironment in vivo. As an emerging field, in situ bioprinting is based on computer-assisted scanning results of the defect site and is able to print cells directly at this site with biomaterials, bioactive factors, and other materials without the need to transfer prefabricated grafts as with traditional in vitro 3D bioprinting methods, and the resulting grafts can accurately adapt to the target defect site. However, one of the important reasons hindering the development of in situ bioprinting is the absence of suitable bioinks. In this review, we will summarize bioinks developed in recent years that can adapt to in situ printing scenarios at the defect site, considering three aspects: the in situ design strategy of bioink, the selection of commonly used biomaterials, and the application of bioprinting to different treatment scenarios.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by the presence of a bacterial biofilm known as dental plaque. This biofilm affects the supporting apparatus of the teeth, especially the periodontal ligaments and the bone surrounding the teeth. Periodontal disease and diabetes seem to be interrelated and in a bidirectional relationship, and have been increasingly studied in recent decades. For example, diabetes mellitus has a detrimental effect on periodontal disease, increasing its prevalence, extent, and severity. In turn, periodontitis negatively affects glycemic control and the course of diabetes. This review aims to present the most recently discovered factors that contribute to the pathogenesis, therapy, and prophylaxis of these two diseases. Specifically, the article focuses on microvascular complications, oral microbiota, pro- and anti-inflammatory factors in diabetes, and periodontal disease. As presented in this review, these two diseases require specific/ complementary therapeutic solutions when they occur in association, with new clinical trials and epidemiological research being necessary for better control of this interdependent pathogenic topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of periodontitis in children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes, and if poor glycemic control is associated with increasing prevalence of the disease. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study involving children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes. A questionnaire related to oral health care history and oral health behaviors was administered to each participant and they then underwent a full-mouth oral evaluation. In addition, clinical and metabolic parameters were extracted from the clinical chart. RESULTS One hundred and twenty one children and adolescents (8-17 years, 11 months) participated. Overall, 45.5% presented some degree of periodontitis, with 10 (8.3%) mild, 36 (29.8%) moderate, and nine (7.4%) severe. The periodontitis group (PD-group) had higher mean gingival and plaque indexes, periodontal probing depth, and clinical attachment loss than the group without periodontitis (NoPD-group) (p<0.05). A statistically significant relationship between the prevalence of periodontitis and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was verified in the bivariate (odds ratio [OR] 1.31 [95% CI, 1.13-1.53], p = 0.001) and multivariate (OR, 1.29 [95% CI, 1.03-1.61], p = 0.03) analysis. For the adjustment variables, associations were verified for duration of diabetes, age, body mass index z-score, lack of running water, insulin use, and acanthosis nigricans. CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes presented high rates of periodontitis comparable with that seen in previous studies in youth with diabetes. Uncontrolled HbA1c influences prevalence of periodontal disease. The lack of matched control group and radiographs are limitations of the study. Comprehensive periodontal examination is essential for children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes to prevent, identify, and treat periodontitis early.
