Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unknown whether high systolic blood pressure had a similar effect on the disease burden of stroke subtypes. The aim of our study is to compare the long-term trends of stroke subtypes and sex groups attributable to high systolic blood pressure in China from 1990 to 2019. METHODS Data about the age-standardized mortality rate and the age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year rate of stroke subtypes attributable to high systolic blood pressure in China were extracted in GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2019. The trends in the age-standardized mortality rate and the age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year rate were calculated using the liner regression and age-period-cohort method, adjusted for age, period, and cohort. RESULTS The estimated annual percentage change for mortality of stroke attributable to high systolic blood pressure was different from subtypes, with an estimated annual percentage change and 95% CI of 0.56 (0.37-0.74) for ischemic stroke (IS), -1.52 (-1.97 to -1.07) for intracerebral hemorrhage, and -7.02 (-7.86 to -6.17) for subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The curve of the net drifts showed a downward trend for intracerebral hemorrhage and SAH, but that showed a stable trend for IS. The curve of local drifts showed a slow upward trend with age for IS, a slow downward trend for intracerebral hemorrhage, and a sharp downward trend for SAH. The drift curves showed different trends for males and females. The proportion of stroke mortality in young males was gradually increasing. The cohort rate ratio varied by subtypes, with the greatest decline for SAH, a slight decrease for intracerebral hemorrhage, and a slight increase for IS. The period rate ratio had decreased over the past 3 decades, with the greatest decline for SAH and the weakest decrease for IS. Moreover, both the period and cohort rate ratios for IS mortality due to high systolic blood pressure in males have increased significantly over the past 3 decades. CONCLUSIONS Our results provided strong evidence that the disease burden of stroke attributable to high systolic blood pressure varied by subtypes and sex in China from 1990 to 2019. The age-standardized mortality rate and the age-standardized disability-adjusted life-year rate decreased for hemorrhagic stroke but increased for IS. Males had a higher mortality and exposure risk but a slighter decreasing trend than females. Our study suggested that greater attention should be given to the prevention of the burden of IS attributable to systolic blood pressure in China, especially for males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The primary objective of this study was to examine risk factors for toddler's hypertension. METHODS Subjects of this study were children and parents participating in a national birth cohort study in Japan, the Japan Environment and Children's Study. We measured the children's blood pressure (BP) at 2 and 4 years old. We obtained children's and parents' backgrounds from the questionnaire. We investigated the factors that affect BP elevation. RESULTS Within 4988 participants, the mean systolic BP at 2 years old was 91.2 mmHg for boys and 90.0 mmHg for girls. The mean systolic BP at 4 years old was 93.8 mmHg for boys and 93.1 mmHg for girls. Parental smoking was associated with elevated values of BP at 2 and 4 years old. Obesity, gestational hypertension, and parental lower education were associated with elevated values of BP at 4 years old. Hypertensive group had a significantly higher obesity rate. The mother's lower education and parental smoking were involved in hypertensive groups. CONCLUSION Parental smoking had a significant effect on BP even in early toddlers. We emphasize the importance of avoiding second-hand smoking from early infancy to prevent future lifestyle-related illnesses including hypertension. IMPACT The mean systolic BP at 2 years old was 91.2 mmHg for boys and 90.0 mmHg for girls. The mean systolic BP at 4 years old was 93.8 mmHg for boys and 93.1 mmHg for girls. Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies have indicated that the prevalence rate of hypertension in adolescents is high, but it has not received much attention and the influencing factors are unclear, especially in Yunnan Province, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cluster sampling method was used to investigate 4781 freshmen in a college in Kunming, Yunnan Province from November to December. Demographic and lifestyle data were collected using questionnaires, and height, weight and blood pressure were measured. Decision tree model of hypertension in college students was established by Chi-square automatic interactive detection method. RESULTS Prevalence of prehypertension of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were detected in 33.9% and 32.1%, respectively. Prevalence of hypertension of SBP and DBP was detected in 1.2% and 7.2%, respectively. The hypertension and prehypertension decision tree of SBP has gender (χ2 = 728.64, p < .001) at the first level and body mass index (BMI) (boys: χ2 = 55.98, p < .001; girls: χ2 = 79.58, p < .001) at the second level. The hypertension and prehypertension decision tree of DBP has gender (χ2 = 381.83, p < .001) at the first level, BMI (boys: χ2 = 40.54, p < .001; girls: χ2 = 48.79, p < .001) at the second level, only children (χ2 = 6.43, p = .04) and red wine consumption (χ2 = 8.17, p = .017) at the third level. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that gender, BMI, only children and red wine consumption were the main factors affecting hypertension in college students in southwest border areas of China.

Abstract
Nutrition and food literacy are two important concepts that are often used interchangeably, but they are not synonymous. Nutrition refers to the study of how food affects the body, while food literacy refers to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to make informed decisions about food and its impact on health. Despite the growing awareness of the importance of food literacy, food illiteracy remains a global issue, affecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic status. Food illiteracy has serious health implications as it contributes to health inequities, particularly among vulnerable populations. In addition, food literacy is a complex and multidisciplinary field, and there are numerous challenges to health communication that must be addressed to effectively promote food literacy and improve health outcomes. Addressing food illiteracy and the challenges to health communication is essential to promote health equity and improve health outcomes for all populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the relationship between parental body mass index (BMI; BMI_p) and hypertension in their adolescent offspring (HTN_a), focusing on the mediating effect of adolescents' BMI (BMI_a). METHODS Utilizing data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, including participants aged 12-18, we conducted a mediation analysis while controlling for confounding factors such as age, sex, physical activity, dietary habits, household income quartile, and parents' alcohol and smoking habits. RESULTS The study included a total of 5731 participants, of whom 3381 and 5455 participants had data on fathers' and mothers' BMI, respectively. For adolescent systolic blood pressure (SBP_a), the father's BMI (BMI_f) had a significant total effect (β, 0.23; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.12 to 0.34) and average controlled mediated effect (ACME) (β, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.23 to 0.32), but the average direct effect (ADE) was not significant. The mother's BMI (BMI_m) had a significant total effect (β, 0.17; 95% CI, 0.09 to 0.25), ACME (β, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.28) and ADE (β, -0.08; 95% CI, -0.16 to 0.00). For adolescent diastolic blood pressure, both BMI_f and BMI_m had significant ACMEs (β, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.08 to 0.12 and β, 0.09; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.12, respectively), BMI_m had a significant ADE (β, -0.09; 95% CI, -0.16 to -0.02) but BMI_f had an insignificant ADE and total effect. CONCLUSIONS The study found that parental BMI had a significant effect on SBP_a, mediated through BMI_a. Therefore, a high BMI in parents could be a risk factor, mediated through BMI_a, for systolic hypertension in adolescents, necessitating appropriate management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is a disease of multifactorial etiology. Individuals with parental history of hypertension (PHH) have also been observed to be at an increased risk of developing hypertension in their adult life. However, there is a dearth of studies among youth. Obesity is one of the risk factors, and studies conducted among adults of all age groups have observed that there is a highly significant correlation between hypertension and body mass index (BMI). Hence, the association between the two factors, viz., parental history of hypertension and BMI, among the young Indian male and female population was analyzed in this study. METHOD This cross-sectional study conducted in Central India comprised 100 young adults between 18 and 25 years of age. On the basis of parental history of hypertension, the subjects were divided into two groups: group 1 comprised youth with parental history of hypertension and group 2 comprised youth without parental history of hypertension, involving 32 and 68 subjects in each of these groups, respectively. Anthropometric measurements were done using standard methods, and BMI was calculated. Statistical analysis was done using Epi Info software. RESULTS The study subjects in both groups were comparable in age. The mean age of the study participants was 19.32 years and 19.45 years in group 1 and group 2, respectively. The study did not find any association between BMI and parental history of hypertension. CONCLUSION The association between parental history of hypertension and BMI, the non-modifiable and modifiable independent risk factors, respectively, needs to be further explored in light of the iceberg phenomenon, multifactorial causation, and natural history of disease. It is worth mentioning that parental history of hypertension and other risk factors should be considered even if the BMI is normal as per Asian Indian cutoff levels.

Abstract
The metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) is a recently developed parameter for screening of metabolic disorder. However, the association between METS-IR and risk of hypertension in general adult population remains not fully determined. A meta-analysis was therefore performed. Observational studies evaluating the association between METS-IR and hypertension in adults were retrieved by searching PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases from inception to October 10, 2022. A random-effects model, which incorporates the potential influence of heterogeneity, was used to pool the results. Eight studies with 305 341 adults were included in the meta-analysis, and 47 887 (15.7%) of them had hypertension. Pooled results showed that a higher METS-IR was associated with hypertension after adjusting for multiple conventional risk factors [relative risk (RR) for highest versus lowest category of METS-IR: 1.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.53 to 1.83, p<0.001, I2=8%]. The results were consistent in subgroup analyses according to study design, source of the cohort, age, sex, body mass index of the participants, and quality scores of the study (p for subgroup difference all>0.05). Results of meta-analysis with METS-IR analyzed in continuous variables also showed that METS-IR was associated with the risk of hypertension (RR for 1-unit increment of METS-IR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.23, p<0.001, I2=79%). In conclusion, a high METS-IR is associated with hypertension in general adult population. Measuring METS-IR may be useful for screening participants at high risk of hypertension.

Abstract
Objective Identifying hypertension in children and providing treatment for it have a marked impact on the patients' long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The global prevalence of childhood hypertension is increasing, yet its investigation has been rather sporadic in Eastern Europe. Therefore, our goal was to determine the prevalence of childhood hypertension and its concomitant metabolic abnormalities using data mining methods. Methods We evaluated data from 3 to 18-year-old children who visited the University of Debrecen Clinical Center's hospital throughout a 15-year study period (n = 92,198; boys/girls: 48/52%). Results We identified a total of 3,687 children with hypertension (2,107 boys and 1,580 girls), with a 4% calculated prevalence of hypertension in the whole study population and a higher prevalence in boys (4.7%) as compared to girls (3.2%). Among boys we found an increasing prevalence in consecutive age groups in the study population, but among girls the highest prevalences are identified in the 12-15-year age group. Markedly higher BMI values were found in hypertensive children as compared to non-hypertensives in all age groups. Moreover, significantly higher total cholesterol (4.27 ± 0.95 vs. 4.17 ± 0.88 mmol/L), LDL-C (2.62 ± 0.79 vs. 2.44 ± 0.74 mmol/L) and triglyceride (1.2 (0.85-1.69) vs. 0.94 (0.7-1.33) mmol/L), and lower HDL-C (1.2 ± 0.3 vs. 1.42 ± 0.39 mmol/L) levels were found in hypertensive children. Furthermore, significantly higher serum uric acid levels were found in children with hypertension (299.2 ± 86.1 vs. 259.9 ± 73.3 μmol/L), while glucose levels did not differ significantly. Conclusion Our data suggest that the calculated prevalence of childhood hypertension in our region is comparable to data from other European countries and is associated with early metabolic disturbances. Data mining is an effective method for identifying childhood hypertension and its metabolic consequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocarditis is a potentially life-threatening infectious disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality and an escalating incidence in recent decades. In this study, as a part of the global burden of disease (GBD) 2019 study, we intend to report endocarditis burden in Iran at national and provincial levels from 1990 to 2019. METHOD This study was conducted using GBD 2019 study data on endocarditis from 1990 to 2019. We gathered incidence, prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and mortality rates in Iran and its 31 provinces by sex and age groups as epidemiological indices for endocarditis burden. Further decomposition analysis was also performed to delineate the endocarditis new cases trend. RESULTS On the country scale, age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALYs rate were (16.5 (95% uncertainty interval 13.7 to 19.8), 3.4 (2.9 to 4.1), 0.6 (0.5 to 0.9), and 14.4 (12.0 to 21.1) in 2019, respectively. Decomposition analysis showed that only 59.2% of the overall new cases increase (114.1%) was caused by the incidence rate change. All estimated age-standardized rates were higher in men in 1990 and 2019 with a ratio of 1.1-1.5. CONCLUSION The ASIR and ASPR of endocarditis increased, and the ASMR and age-standardized DALYs rate declined over the past 30 years in Iran, nearly all the provinces followed the same pattern with North Khorasan having the Highest ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, and DALYs rates in both years. High systolic blood pressure (SBP) had the greatest attributed burden among risk factors.

Abstract
Background Young adults with hypertension have a higher lifetime risk of cardiovascular diseases. Global evidence suggests a significant role of diet and lifestyle risk factors on hypertension among the young adult (aged 18-39 years) hypertensive population. Aim The purpose of this study was to look for the association of diet and lifestyle risk factors with young adult hypertensives. Results This study reports the prevalence of young adult hypertension based on a national representative sample based on the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) data and the association of behavioral risk factors with young adult hypertension. The survey adopted a two-stage stratified random sampling. The outcome variable was hypertension, whereas the exposure variables were various diet and lifestyle factors. The prevalence of young adult hypertension in India was 12.4% among men and 8.2% among women. Sikkim had the highest prevalence among both sexes. Lower prevalence was seen in the states of Delhi and Kerala. Marital status, body mass index, eating meat, alcohol intake, and taking coffee or tobacco 30 min before BP measurement were found to be associated factors that put both the sexes at risk of developing hypertension. The wealth index was concluded as a risk factor only in men while the level of education came out to be a risk factor only in females. Conclusion This study is the first from India which gives a recent estimate of prevalence of young adult hypertension by state and individual level characteristics in addition to national level estimates for India.

Abstract
Maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) during pregnancy is associated with a low birth weight; however, the congener-specific effects of PCB congeners are not well defined. In this study, we used maternal serum samples from the Chiba Study of Mother and Child Health (C-MACH) cohort, collected at 32 weeks of gestational age, to analyze the effects of PCB congener exposure on birth weight by examining the relationship between newborn birth weight and individual PCB congener levels in maternal serum (n = 291). The median total PCB level in the serum of mothers of male and female newborns at approximately 32 weeks of gestation was 39 and 37 ng g−1 lipid wt, respectively. The effect of the total PCB levels and the effects of PCB congener mixtures were analyzed using a linear regression model and a generalized weighted quantile sum regression model (gWQS). The birth weight of newborns was significantly associated with maternal exposure to PCB mixtures in the gWQS model. The results suggest that exposure to PCB mixtures results in low newborn birth weight. However, specific impacts of individual PCB congeners could not be related to newborn birth weight.

Abstract
Long-term hypertension leads to alterations in the structure and function of blood vessels, and abnormal proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are important factors for these changes. Linalool is a natural compound extracted from plants. The present study aimed to explore the role and underlying mechanism of linalool in the physiological behavior of VSMCs. Angiotensin II (Ang II) was utilized to treat VSMCs, and MTT and western blotting assays were then employed to detect the effect of linalool on the induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs. The target gene of linalool was predicted by the SwissTargetPrediction website, and its expression level in VSMCs was determined using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blotting. Next, the role of the target gene in the physiological behavior of VSMCs treated with linalool was examined, and the signaling pathway was explored. The results revealed that the proliferation and migration of VSMCs treated with Ang II were significantly promoted, and linalool could alleviate these effects in a dose-dependent manner. Cholinergic receptor muscarinic 3 (CHRM3), as a predicted target, was found to be highly expressed in Ang II-induced VSMCs, and CHRM3 overexpression could prevent the inhibitory effect of linalool on cell proliferation and migration. In addition, its overexpression caused an increase in the expression of proteins related to the MAPK signaling pathway. In conclusion, linalool inhibited the proliferation and migration of Ang II-induced VSMCs and blocked the MAPK signaling pathway by downregulating CHRM3.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although previous studies have shown the relationship between different parental factors and children's blood pressure status, there is limited data on the cumulative effect of these factors. Considering parental socio-demographic, behavioral and cardio-metabolic characteristics, the current study aimed to distinguish parental risk clusters and their impact on the incidence of hypertension in school-age children over 13 years. METHODS Parental characteristics of 1669 children, including age, education, employment, smoking, physical activity, metabolic syndrome (MetS), hypertension (HTN), weight status, and diabetes were considered to categorize parents into low and high-risk clusters. Crude incidence rates (per 10,000 person-years) of HTN in children were assessed in each maternal and paternal cluster. Using Cox proportional hazard model, results on the association between parental risk clusters and HTN incidence in children were reported in five different models. RESULTS Mean age of children was 13.96 ± 2.89 years, and 51.2% (n = 854) were girls. MetS, HTN, and weight status were the most important factors distinguishing low and high-risk parental clusters, respectively. Crude incidence rates (per 10,000 person-years) of HTN were 86 (95% CI: 71-106) and 38 (95% CI, 29-52) in boys and girls, respectively. Moreover, incidence rates (per 10,000 person-years) of HTN were 50 (95% CI, 40-63) and 80 (95% CI, 64-102) in maternal low and high-risk clusters, respectively. The incidence rates (per 10,000 person-years) of HTN in paternal low and high-risk clusters were 53 (95% CI, 41-70) and 68 (95% CI, 56-84), respectively. CONCLUSION Our findings underscore the prognostic value of maternal characteristics in predicting the incidence of HTN in their offspring. The current results could be valuable in planning related programs to prevent hypertension in similar communities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Compelling evidence suggests that childhood adversities are associated with an increased risk of hypertension in middle age and old age. The link between childhood adversities and blood pressure in youth is less clear. In this cohort study, we examined the association between death of a parent during childhood and blood pressure in early adulthood in men. SETTING Sweden. PARTICIPANTS We studied 48 624 men born in 1949-1951 who participated in the compulsory military conscription in 1969/1970 in Sweden. Information on death of a parent during childhood was obtained from population-based registers. Information on covariates was obtained from the questionnaire and the clinical examination completed at conscription and from population-based registers. OUTCOME MEASURES Blood pressure was measured at conscription according to standard procedures. RESULTS The multivariable least square means of systolic and diastolic blood pressure did not differ between bereaved (128.25 (127.04-129.46) and 73.86 (72.89-74.84) mm Hg) and non-bereaved study participants (128.02 (126.86-129.18) and 73.99 (73.06-74.93) mm Hg). Results were similar when considering the cause of the parent's death, the gender of the deceased parent or the child's age at loss. Loss of a parent in childhood tended to be associated with an increased hypertension risk (OR and 95% CI: 1.10 (1 to 1.20)); the association was present only in case of natural deaths. CONCLUSION We found no strong support for the hypothesis that stress following the loss of a parent during childhood is associated with blood pressure or hypertension in youth in men.

Abstract
There is currently a lack of strong evidence linking childhood elevated blood pressure to long-term cardiovascular risk in adulthood. Repeated observations of abnormal blood pressure in childhood may enhance the prediction of cardiovascular risk in adulthood compared with a single observation. The study included 1738 individuals in rural areas of Hanzhong City, Shaanxi, who had been followed for 30 years since baseline (1987, at which time participants were aged 6-15 years). According to four independent measurements of blood pressure in 1987, 1989, 1992, and 1995, childhood elevated blood pressure was defined as 2 in-person examinations with blood pressure values above the 90th percentile. Arterial stiffness and left ventricular hypertrophy in adulthood were assessed by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and the Cornell product index, respectively. Childhood elevated blood pressure was associated with an increased risk of adult hypertension (OR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.53-2.65), arterial stiffness (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.32-2.16) and left ventricular hypertrophy (OR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.13-3.05) (all P < 0.05). Cardiovascular risk in adults increased with increasing childhood blood pressure levels. In addition, two abnormal childhood blood pressure observations predicted an increased likelihood of hypertension in adulthood (0.77 for 2 versus 0.70 for 1 observation, P < 0.001). Our study provides strong evidence that elevated blood pressure in childhood predicts cardiovascular risk in adults. The prediction was enhanced by two observations of abnormal blood pressure in childhood compared with a single measurement. We emphasize the importance of childhood blood pressure monitoring and control in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Worldwide, hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are highly prevalent disorders and are strong risk factors for cardiovascular disease and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHAD) concept suggests that undesirable perinatal environmental conditions, such as malnutrition, contribute to disease development in adults. Among the known hypertension and CKD risk factors, DOHAD plays a potential role in determining susceptibility to the onset of these diseases in later adulthood. Since low birth weight (LBW) is a surrogate marker for adverse fetal environmental conditions, the high incidence of LBW in developing countries and its increasing incidence in most developed countries (attributed to multiple pregnancies and prepregnancy maternal factors, such as undernutrition, advanced maternal age, and smoking) is concerning. Thus, LBW is an important public health problem not only because of the associated infant mortality and morbidity but also because it is a risk factor for adult-onset hypertension/CKD. During their reproductive years, pregnant women who were born with LBWs have an increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, which contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and ESRD. The offspring of LBW females are also likely to be LBW, which suggests that susceptibility to hypertension/CKD may reflect transgenerational inheritance. Therefore, there is global concern about the increasing prevalence of LBW-related diseases. This review summarizes the relevance of hypertension and CKD in conjunction with DOHAD and discusses recent studies that have examined the impact of the upward LBW trend on renal function and blood pressure.

Abstract
Background : High blood pressure (BP) is a healthcare problem in young persons. There are racial differences in anthropometrics, dietary habit and lifestyle relating to BP. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between anthropometrics, lifestyle and BP obtained in the Japanese university students. Materials and Methods : Participants were recruited in annual health screening including questionnaire, measurements of BP and anthropometrics calculating body mass index (BMI). Totally, 14,280 students (10,273 males and 4,007 females) were eligible. Multiple regression analyses were applied to predict contributors to high BP. Results : BMI was the most powerful contributor to high BP in many subgroups divided by gender and graduation (p < 0.001). In lifestyle, contribution of lack of exercise to high BPs was observed in the undergraduates. Smoking, drinking and breakfast skipping had no significant impact on high BP. However, smoking and drinking permeated and exercise habit declined after graduation. Prevalence of obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg / m2) and hypertension ( ≥ 140 / 90 mmHg) increased in subgroups with advanced age (p < 0.001). Conclusion: BMI was found to be the most powerful contributor to high BPs. Health literacy to modify lifestyle is important to prevent hypertension for university students who are exposed to social trends of unhealthy lifestyle. J. Med. Invest. 67 : 174-181, February, 2020.

Body mass index modifies the association between frequency of alcohol consumption and incidence of hypertension in men but not in women: a retrospective cohort study. Hypertens Res 2020; 43:322-330. Abstract
Alcohol consumption is one of the major modifiable risk factors of hypertension. The aim of the present retrospective study was to assess the clinical impact of obesity on the association between alcohol consumption and the incidence of hypertension. The present study included 5116 male and 6077 female university employees with a median age of 32 (interquartile range 27-39) who underwent annual health checkups between January 2005 and March 2013. Self-reported drinking frequency was recorded at their first checkup and categorized into rarely and 1-3, 4-6, and 7 days/week. During the median observational period of 4.9 years (interquartile range 2.1-8.3), hypertension, defined as systolic/diastolic blood pressure of ≥140/90 mmHg and/or self-reported treatment for hypertension, was observed in 1067 (20.9%) men and 384 (6.3%) women. Poisson regression models adjusted for clinically relevant factors revealed a dose-dependent association between drinking frequency and the incidence of hypertension in men (adjusted incidence rate ratio [95% confidence interval] of men who drank rarely, 1-3, 4-6, and 7 days/week was 1.00 [reference], 1.12 [0.97-1.30], 1.42 [1.19-1.70], and 1.35 [1.14-1.59], respectively; Ptrend < 0.001). However, this association was not observed in women. The dose-dependent association was significant in nonobese men (body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m2), but not in obese men (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) (P for interaction between drinking frequency and BMI = 0.072). The present study provides clinically useful evidence to identify the drinkers who may reap the health benefits of abstinence from alcohol consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the prevalence of obesity and high blood pressure increases among the population, early action is needed to reduce blood pressure. Certain lifestyles during pregnancy have negative effects resulting in high blood pressure for children and adolescents. Using data from the "German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents" (KiGGS), this study analyzed: (i) the association between low-to-moderate prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and the risk of increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure and (ii) whether associations were modified by socioeconomic status (SES), prenatal smoke exposure (PSE), and body mass index (BMI) of the children and adolescents. METHODS We applied multivariate logistic regression analyses and stratified analyses by SES, PSE, and BMI with cross-sectional data from the KiGGS study (N = 14,253) to examine the association between PAE and prehypertension or hypertension in 3- to 17-year-olds. RESULTS Of the surveyed children and adolescents, 13.7% had a systolic prehypertension and 11.5% had a diastolic prehypertension. A further 7.5% were identified as having systolic hypertension and 6.0% diastolic hypertension. In the regression analyses, PAE resulted in a decreased risk of systolic prehypertension (odds ratio [OR]: 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70, 0.99) and diastolic prehypertension (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.68, 0.98). Risk reductions were not significant in surveyed children and adolescents with hypertension. Interactions between PAE and SES, PSE, and offspring BMI were not significant. CONCLUSIONS Contrary to our initial hypothesis, PAE reduces the risk of prehypertension. Animal studies suggest that vasodilation is induced by nitric oxide in small quantities of PAE.
