Atomic-level molybdenum oxide nanorings with full-spectrum absorption and photoresponsive properties

Strong and Healable Elastomers with Photothermal-Stimulus Dynamic Nanonetworks Enabled by Subnano Ultrafine MoO3-x Nanowires

One-dimensional nanomaterials have become one of the most available nanoreinforcing agents for developing next-generation high-performance functional self-healing composites owing to their unique structural characteristics and surface electron structure. However, nanoscale control, structural regulation, and crystal growth are still enormous challenges in the synthesis of specific one-dimensional nanomaterials. Here, oxygen-defective MoO3-x nanowires with abundant surface dynamic bonding were successfully synthesized as novel nanofillers and photothermal response agents combined with a polyurethane matrix to construct composite elastomers, thus achieving mechanically enhanced and self-healing properties. Benefiting from the surface plasmon resonance of the MoO3-x nanowires and interfacial multiple dynamic bonding interactions, the composite elastomers demonstrated strong mechanical performance (with a strength of 31.45 MPa and elongation of 1167.73%) and ultrafast photothermal toughness self-healing performance (20 s and an efficiency of 94.34%). The introduction of MoO3-x nanowires allows the construction of unique three-dimensional cross-linked nanonetworks that can move and regulate interfacial dynamic interactions under 808 nm infrared laser stimulation, resulting in controlled mechanical and healing performance. Therefore, such special elastomers with strong photothermal responses and mechanical properties are expected to be useful in next-generation biological antibacterial materials, wearable devices, and artificial muscles.

A Processible and Ultrahigh-temperature Organic Photothermal Material through Spontaneous and Quantitative [2+2] Cycloaddition-Cycloreversion

Energy conversion, particularly light to heat conversion, has garnered significant attention owing to its prospect in renewable energy exploitation and utilization. Most previous efforts have focused on developing organic photothermal materials for low-temperature applications, whereas the importance of simplifying the preparation methods of photothermal materials and enhancing their maximum photothermal temperature have been less taken. Herein, we prepare an organic near-infrared (NIR) photothermal material namely ATT by a spontaneous [2+2] cycloaddition-cycloreversion reaction. In addition to the solution-based method, ATT could also be readily preapred by ball milling in a high yield of 90 % in just 15 min. ATT powder exhibits a broad absorption extending beyond 2000 nm, excellent processability, and thermal stability. Remarkably, ATT powder can reach an unprecedently temperature as high as 450 °C while maintaining excellent photostability upon photoirradiation. Leveraging its extraordinary photothermal and processable properties, ATT was used in the high-temperature applications, such as photo-ignition, photo-controlled metal processing and high-temperature shape memory, all of which offer spatiotemporal control capabilities. This work provides a new approach to prepare organic photothermal materials with high temperatures, and pave the way for their applications in extreme environments.

Tuning the Chirality Evolution in Achiral Subnanometer Systems by Judicious Control of Molecule Interactions

Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.

A review of recent advances in the use of complex metal nanostructures for biomedical applications from diagnosis to treatment

Complex metal nanostructures represent an exceptional category of materials characterized by distinct morphologies and physicochemical properties. Nanostructures with shape anisotropies, such as nanorods, nanostars, nanocages, and nanoprisms, are particularly appealing due to their tunable surface plasmon resonances, controllable surface chemistries, and effective targeting capabilities. These complex nanostructures can absorb light in the near-infrared, enabling noteworthy applications in nanomedicine, molecular imaging, and biology. The engineering of targeting abilities through surface modifications involving ligands, antibodies, peptides, and other agents potentiates their effects. Recent years have witnessed the development of innovative structures with diverse compositions, expanding their applications in biomedicine. These applications encompass targeted imaging, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, near-infrared II imaging, catalytic therapy, photothermal therapy, and cancer treatment. This review seeks to provide the nanomedicine community with a thorough and informative overview of the evolving landscape of complex metal nanoparticle research, with a specific emphasis on their roles in imaging, cancer therapy, infectious diseases, and biofilm treatment. NIR-II photothermal conversion and imaging based on a cocrystal containing twisted components

On account of the scarcity of molecules with a satisfactory second near-infrared (NIR-II) response, the design of high-performance organic NIR photothermal materials has been limited. Herein, we investigate a cocrystal incorporating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetrachloroperylene dianhydride (TCPDA) components. A stable radical was generated through charge transfer from TTF to TCPDA, which exhibits strong and wide-ranging NIR-II absorption. The metal-free TTF-TCPDA cocrystal in this research shows high photothermal conversion capability under 1064 nm laser irradiation and clear photothermal imaging. The remarkable conversion ability-which is a result of twisted components in the cocrystal-has been demonstrated by analyses of single crystal X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy as well as theoretical calculations. We have discovered that space charge separation and the ordered lattice in the TTF-TCPDA cocrystal suppress the radiative decay, while simultaneously strong intermolecular charge transfer enhances the non-radiative decay. The twisted TCPDA component induces rapid charge recombination, while the distorted configuration in TTF-TCPDA favors an internal non-radiative pathway. This research has provided a comprehensive understanding of the photothermal conversion mechanism and opened a new way for the design of advanced organic NIR-II photothermal materials.

An efficient interfacial solar evaporator featuring a hierarchical porous structure entirely derived from waste cotton

Interfacial solar evaporators are widely used to purify water. However, photothermal materials commonly constituting most interfacial solar evaporators remain expensive; additionally, the inherent structure of the evaporators limits their performance. Furthermore, the large amount of waste cotton produced by the textile industry is an environmental threat. To address these issues, we propose an interfacial solar evaporator, H-CA-CS, with a hierarchical porous structure. This evaporator is made entirely of waste cotton and uses carbon microspheres (CMS) and cellulose aerogel (CA) as photothermal and substrate materials, respectively. Additionally, its photothermal layer (CS layer) has large pores and a high porosity, which promote light absorption and timely vapor escape. In contrast, the water transport layer (CA layer) has small pores, providing a robust capillary effect for water transport. Combined with the outstanding light absorption properties of CMS, H-CA-CS exhibited superior overall performance. We found that H-CA-CS has an excellent evaporation rate (1.68 kg m-2 h-1) and an efficiency of 90.6 % under one solar illumination (1 kW m-2), which are superior to those of many waste-based solar evaporators. Moreover, H-CA-CS maintained a mean evaporation rate of 1.61 kg m-2 h-1, ensuring sustainable evaporation performance under long-term scenarios. Additionally, H-CA-CS can be used to purify seawater and various types of wastewater with removal efficiencies exceeding 99 %. In conclusion, this study proposes a method for efficiently using waste cotton to purify water and provides novel ideas for the high-value use of other waste fibers to further mitigate ongoing environmental degradation.

Sulfur-Doped NiFe Hydroxide Nanobowls with Wrinkling Patterns for Photothermal Cancer Therapy

Hierarchical multiscale wrinkling nanostructures have shown great promise for many biomedical applications, such as cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, synthesizing these materials with precise control remains challenging. Here, we report a sulfur doping strategy to synthesize sub-1 nm NiFe hydroxide ultrathin nanosheets (S-NiFe HUNs). The introduction of sulfur affects the reduction of the band gap and the adjustment of the electronic structure, thereby improving the light absorption ability of the S-NiFe HUNs. Additionally, S-NiFe HUNs show a multilayered nanobowl-like structure that enables multiple reflections of incident light inside the nanostructure, which improved the utilization of incident light and achieved high photothermal conversion. As a result, the as-prepared product with hydrophilic modification (dS-NiFe HUNs) demonstrated enhanced tumor-killing ability in vitro. In a mouse model of breast cancer, dS-NiFe HUNs combined with near-infrared light irradiation greatly inhibited tumor growth and prolonged the mice survival. Altogether, our study demonstrates the great potential of dS-NiFe HUNs for cancer photothermal therapy applications.

Recent Advances in 4D Printing of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are renowned for their large, reversible, and anisotropic shape change in response to various external stimuli due to their lightly cross-linked polymer networks with an oriented mesogen direction, thus showing great potential for applications in robotics, bio-medics, electronics, optics, and energy. To fully take advantage of the anisotropic stimuli-responsive behaviors of LCEs, it is preferable to achieve a locally controlled mesogen alignment into monodomain orientations. In recent years, the application of 4D printing to LCEs opens new doors for simultaneously programming the mesogen alignment and the 3D geometry, offering more opportunities and higher feasibility for the fabrication of 4D-printed LCE objects with desirable stimuli-responsive properties. Here, the state-of-the-art advances in 4D printing of LCEs are reviewed, with emphasis on both the mechanisms and potential applications. First, the fundamental properties of LCEs and the working principles of the representative 4D printing techniques are briefly introduced. Then, the fabrication of LCEs by 4D printing techniques and the advantages over conventional manufacturing methods are demonstrated. Finally, perspectives on the current challenges and potential development trends toward the 4D printing of LCEs are discussed, which may shed light on future research directions in this new field.

Precise Assembly of Polyoxometalates at Single-cluster Levels

Polyoxometalate (POM) clusters with atomic precision structures are promising candidates construct functional nanomaterials via self-assembly. Non-covalent interactions at molecular levels can govern the self-assembly of POM clusters, for which the precise control of POM-based assemblies can be realized at single-cluster levels. This mini-review focuses on the synthesis and properties of POM-based nanostructures, including amphiphilic POM assemblies and co-assemblies of POM clusters and other subnanometer building blocks. Several synthetic strategies have been developed for rational control of POM-based assemblies in terms of morphologies, compositions and properties. 1D subnanometer POM assemblies demonstrate remarkable enhanced mechanical properties due to the topological interactions between nanowires and surroundings. The in-depth understanding of POM-based assemblies may help in the design of functional nanomaterials in fundamental perspectives and applications.

Facile Synthesis of NixCo3-xS4 Microspheres for High-Performance Supercapacitors and Alkaline Aqueous Rechargeable NiCo-Zn Batteries

Electrochemical energy storage devices (EESDs) have caused widespread concern, ascribed to the increasing depletion of traditional fossil energy and environmental pollution. In recent years, nickel cobalt bimetallic sulfides have been regarded as the most attractive electrode materials for super-performance EESDs due to their relatively low cost and multiple electrochemical reaction sites. In this work, NiCo-bimetallic sulfide Ni_xCo_3-xS₄ particles were synthesized in a mixed solvent system with different proportion of Ni and Co salts added. In order to improve the electrochemical performance of optimized Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄ electrode, the Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄ particles were annealed at 350 °C for 60 min (denoted as Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄-350), and the capacity and rate performance of Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄-350 was greatly improved. An aqueous NiCo-Zn battery was assembled by utilizing Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄-350 pressed onto Ni form as cathode and commercial Zn sheet as anode. The NiCo-Zn battery based on Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄-350 cathode electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 232 mAh g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 and satisfactory cycling performance (65% capacity retention after 1000 repeated cycles at 8 A g^-1). The as-assembled NiCo-Zn battery deliver a high specific energy of 394.6 Wh kg^-1 and long-term cycling ability. The results suggest that Ni_2.5Co_0.5S₄-350 electrode has possible applications in the field of alkaline aqueous rechargeable electrochemical energy storage devices for supercapacitor and NiCo-Zn battery.

Solvent-Controlled Condensation of [Mo2 O5 (PTC4A)2 ]6- Metalloligand in Stepwise Assembly of Hexagonal and Rectangular Ag18 Nanoclusters

Stepwise assembly starting from a preassembled metalloligand is a promising approach to obtain otherwise unattainable silver nanoclusters, but hard to be intrinsically identified due to the lack of convincing evidence to justify such a process. Herein, hexagonal and rectangular Ag₁₈ nanoclusters are constructed from the [Mo₂ O₅ (PTC4A)₂ ]^6- (H₄ PTC4A=p-phenyl-thiacalix[4]arene) metalloligand through stepwise assembly. The formation of the metalloligand is confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, then assembled with silver ions to form two geometrically different Ag₁₈ nanoclusters in different solvents. The cyclization from the metalloligand to [(Mo₂ O₅ PTC4A)₆ ]^12- can be realized without alcohols and otherwise blocked by them. The installation of this metalloligand not only provides comprehensive understanding of how the solvents regulate the silver nanocluster structures, but also brings new insights for the controllable ligand metallization and subsequent condensation.

Single Molecular Layer of Chitin Sub-Nanometric Nanoribbons: One-Pot Self-Exfoliation and Crystalline Assembly into Robust, Sustainable, and Moldable Structural Materials

Sub-nanometric materials (SNMs) represent a series of unprecedented size-/morphology-related properties applicable in theoretical research and diverse cutting-edge applications. However, in-depth investigation and wide utilization of organic SNMs are frequently hindered, owing to the complex synthesis procedures, insufficient colloidal stability, poor processability, and high cost. In this work, a low-cost, energy-efficient, convenient, effective, and scalable method is demonstrated for directly exfoliating chitin SNMs from their natural sources through a one-pot "tandem molecular intercalation" process. The resultant solution-like sample, which exhibits ribbon-like feature and contains more than 85% of the single molecular layer (thickness <0.6 nm), is capable of being solution-processed to different types of materials. Thanks to the sub-nanometric size and rich surface functional groups, chitin SNMs reveal versatile intriguing properties that rarely observe in their nano-counterparts (nanofibrils), e.g., crystallization-like assembly in the colloidal state and alcoplasticity/self-adhesiveness in the bulk aggregate state. The finding in this work not only opens a new avenue for the high value-added utilization of chitin, but also provides a new platform for both the theoretical study and practical applications of organic SNMs.

Recent Progress of Sub-Nanometric Materials in Photothermal Energy Conversion

Sub-nanometric materials (SNMs) are an attractive scope in recent years due to their atomic-level size and unique properties. Among various performances of SNMs, photothermal energy conversion is one of the most important ones because it can efficiently utilize the light energy. Herein, the SNMs with photothermal energy conversion behaviors and their applications are reviewed. First, a hydrothermal/solvothermal method for the synthesis of SNMs is systematically discussed, including the LaMer pathway and the cluster-nuclei coassembly pathway. Based on this synthetic strategy, many kinds of SNMs with different morphologies are successfully prepared, such as nanorings, nanowires, nanosheets, and nanobelts. These SNMs exhibit excellent photothermal performance under the laser or solar irradiation according to their different light absorption ranges. These enhanced absorption performances of SNMs are induced by the mechanism of plasmonic localized heating or nonradiative relaxation. Finally, the applications of the photothermal SNMs are illustrated. The SNMs with photothermal behaviors can be widely applied in the fields of solar vapor generation, biomedicine, and light-responsive composites construction. It is hoped that this review can provide new viewpoints and profound understanding to the SNMs in photothermal energy conversion.

Cluster-Nuclei Coassembled One-Dimensional Subnanometer Heteronanostructures

The cluster-nuclei coassembled strategy provides an impressive way to obtain 1D subnanometer heteronanostructures, including subnanometer nanowires and subnanometer nanobelts. These nanomaterials have diameters and thicknesses close to the size of a unit cell and exhibit excellent performance originating from multicomponent synergy. This Mini Review summarizes the recent progress of these novel functional nanomaterials, including their properties and applications in catalysis, energy conversion, and other fields. On the basis of previous studies, the development direction of cluster-nuclei coassembled 1D subnanometer materials is pointed out.

Single-Crystal Inorganic Helical Architectures Induced by Asymmetrical Defects in Sub-Nanometric Wires

Constructing single-crystal inorganic helical structures is a fascinating subject for a large variety of research fields. However, the driving force of self-coiling, particularly in helical architectures, still remains a major challenge. Here, using MoO_3-x sub-nanometric wires (SNWs) as an example, we identified that spontaneous helical architecture with different dimensional features is closely related with their surface asymmetrical defects. Specifically, the surface defects of SNWs are critical to produce the self-coiling process, thereby achieving the ordered helical conformations. Theoretical calculations further suggest that the formation of in-plane and out-of-plane coiling structures is determined by the asymmetrical distribution of the surface defects, and the inhomogeneous charge separation with strong Coulomb attraction dominates the different structural configurations. The resulting MoO_3-x SNW exhibits excellent photothermal behaviors in both aqueous solutions and hydrogel matrixes. Our study provides a novel protocol to achieve helical structure design for their future applications.

Sub-Nanometer Nanobelts Based on Titanium Dioxide/Zirconium Dioxide-Polyoxometalate Heterostructures

In addition to offering conformational flexibility, sub-nanometer nanobelts (SNBs) also outperform many larger nanobelts with large size owing to their ultrathin morphologies. However, to date, only a few monocomponent SNBs have been synthesized. This study presents a facile method for synthesizing ZrO₂ -PMoO (PMZ) SNBs and TiO₂ -PMoO (PMT) SNBs with heterostructures. The SNBs comprise ZrO₂ /TiO₂ and polyoxometalate (POM) nanoclusters, which are formed via the aggregation and subsequent transformation of nanoclusters. Significantly, these SNBs demonstrate high catalytic activity and stability in oxidative desulfurization reactions at room temperature. The impressive catalytic performance of the SNBs is aided by the POM nanoclusters, which not only coassemble with ZrO₂ /TiO₂ nuclei to form building blocks of PMZ SNBs/PMT SNBs but also serve as catalytic centers. The catalytic performance is further enhanced by the ZrO₂ /TiO₂ in the SNBs. Moreover, the proposed synthesis method can be utilized to produce other SNBs. Thus, this method provides valuable insights into the strong performance properties of SNBs created by combining metal oxides and POM nanoclusters into SNBs, which have great potential as redox catalysts.

Au-Polyoxometalates A-B-A-B Type Copolymer-Analogue Sub-1 nm Nanowires

Here it is shown that polyoxometalate (POM) clusters (H₃ PW₁₂ O₄₀ ·xH₂ O, PW₁₂ ) can be introduced to interact with Au nanoclusters to form the "A-B-A-B" type building block ("A" represents Au nanoclusters and "B" stands for PW₁₂ clusters), which continue to grow into copolymer-analogue Au-PW₁₂ sub-1 nm nanowires. Due to the synergetic effect of Au nanoclusters and POMs, the obtained Au-PW₁₂ sub-1 nm nanowires efficiently perform catalytic activity in the photo-electrochemical converting CO₂ into CO. Under light, the catalyst maintains remarkable faradic efficiency (FE) of ≈99% from -0.7 to -0.9V (RHE), which is better than that in dark (FE of 66.4-90.64% from -0.7 to -0.9 V (RHE)). Density functional theory calculations and cryo-electron microscope images support the "A-B-A-B" type of structure and mechanistic studies also reveal the higher reactivity toward COOH* formation and CO adsorption on the catalyst, which lead to the superior catalytic activity in CO₂ reduction reaction.

Molybdenum-based hetero-nanocomposites for cancer therapy, diagnosis and biosensing application: Current advancement and future breakthroughs

In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the nanotechnology for cancer therapy. Even though molybdenum disulphide (MoS2)-based nanocomposites demonstrated extensive applications in biosensing, bioimaging, phototherapy, the review article focusing on MoS2 nanocomposite platform has not been accounted for yet. The review summarizes recent strategies on design and fabrication of MoS2-based nanocomposites and their modulated properties in cancer treatment. The review also discussed several therapeutic strategies (photothermal, photodynamic, immunotherapy, gene therapy and chemotherapy) and their combinations for efficient cancer therapy along with certain case studies. The review also inculcates various diagnostic techniques viz. magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, photoacoustic imaging and fluorescence imaging for diagnosis of cancer.

Surface-Confined Winding Assembly of Mesoporous Nanorods

Bending and folding are important stereoscopic geometry parameters of one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials, yet the precise control of them has remained a great challenge. Herein, a surface-confined winding assembly strategy is demonstrated to regulate the stereoscopic architecture of uniform 1D mesoporous SiO2 (mSiO2) nanorods. Based on this brand-new strategy, the 1D mSiO2 nanorods can wind on the surface of 3D premade nanoparticles (sphere, cube, hexagon disk, spindle, rod, etc.) and inherit their surface topological structures. Therefore, the mSiO2 nanorods with a diameter of ∼50 nm and a variable length can be bent into arc shapes with variable radii and radians, as well as folded into 60, 90, 120, and 180° angular convex corners with controllable folding times. Additionally, in contrast to conventional core@shell structures, this winding structure induces partial exposure and accessibility of the premade nanoparticles. The functional nanoparticles can exhibit large accessible surface and efficient energy exchanges with the surroundings. As a proof of concept, winding-structured CuS&mSiO2 nanocomposites are fabricated, which are made up of a 100 nm CuS nanosphere and the 1D mSiO2 nanorods with a diameter of ∼50 nm winding the nanosphere in the perimeter. The winding structured nanocomposites are demonstrated to have fourfold photoacoustic imaging intensity compared with the conventional core@shell nanostructure with an inaccessible core because of the greatly enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (increased by ∼30%). Overall, our work paves the way to the design and synthesis of 1D nanomaterials with controllable bending and folding, as well as the formation of high-performance complex nanocomposites.

Nanoconfined Water-Molecule Channels for High-Yield Solar Vapor Generation under Weaker Sunlight

Solar vapor generation is a promising method to efficiently produce fresh water. However, the insufficient vapor yields under natural daylight restrict its practical applications, and the basic evaporation mechanisms are deficient for reasonable design of evaporator structure. Here, hydrophobic nano-confined water molecule channels (NCWMCs) are demonstrated, which can reduce the vaporization enthalpy for water evaporation and achieve a record vapor generation rate of 1.25 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 0.5 sun irradiation. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the cluster-evaporation process in the NCWMC system. As a result, the evaporator with NCWMC system can effectively purify seawater and wastewater samples using this environmentally friendly strategy.

Van der Waals Integrated Hybrid POM-Zirconia Flexible Belt-Like Superstructures

A facile one-step solvothermal approach to engineer a van der Waals integrated heteromaterial self-assembled superstructure composed of two structurally distinct species that is polyoxomolybdate and zirconia (POM-ZrO₂ ) is reported. Nonclassical aggregation-based self-assembly process grows the superstructure. The introduced POM not only behaves as a catalytically active component of the hybrid structure but also imparts flexibility to the developed POM-ZrO₂ superstructures. The material shows high performance toward oxygenation of thioethers as a result of its morphology, composition, and structure. This growing strategy may introduce a viable pathway to the rational design of Van der Waals integrated complex hybrid, catalytically active assemblies with potential applications in different fields.

Amorphous MoO3-x nanosheets prepared by the reduction of crystalline MoO3 by Mo metal for LSPR and photothermal conversion

Amorphous MoO3-x with enhanced LSPR has been fabricated successfully by introducing Mo atoms into the interlayers of MoO3 nanosheets via a hydrothermal method. The inserted Mo atom could bond with inherent Mo atoms and further form a distorted atomic configuration structure. Thus, the amorphous MoO3-x possesses a relatively excellent photothermal conversion efficiency of 61.79%.

Stable and tunable plasmon resonance of molybdenum oxide nanosheets from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman analysis

Preparation of color-tunable and stable plasmonic MoO3 nanomaterials remains challenging, due to the lack of an effective preparation strategy and surface protection in heavily doped MoO3. Herein, we report a facile and reliable method for synthesis of oxygen-deficient MoO3 (MoO3-x ) nanosheets using dopamine as the reducing agent and precursor for the formation of a polydopamine (PDA) surface coating. The PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets show stable and tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region (361-809 nm) via altering the pH value of the medium, accompanying the generation of multicolor nanosheet dispersions, such as deep blue, faint bluish, orange, yellow and black. Importantly, the resulting PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets are quite stable even in the presence of oxidants, and they can be used as an ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The limit of detection for rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye is down to 0.3 fM concentration, and the corresponding Raman enhancement factor reaches 1 × 1010. The coupling of charge transfer between R6G and PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets and molecular resonances may be responsible for the strong SERS effect.

Eu3+, Tb3+- and Er3+, Yb3+-Doped α-MoO3 Nanosheets for Optical Luminescent Thermometry

Here we report a novel synthesis approach for the preparation of α-MoO₃:Ln³⁺ materials employing a two-step synthesis. Additionally, in this work the α-MoO₃:Ln³⁺ materials are reported as potential optical thermometers for the first time. In this synthesis approach, first MoS₂ 2D nanosheets were prepared, which were further heat treated to obtain α-MoO₃. These materials were fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and luminescence spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent luminescence measurements were carried out to determine the optical thermometric properties of two different types of α-MoO₃:Ln³⁺ materials (Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ downshifting and Er³⁺/Yb³⁺ upconversion luminescence systems). We demonstrate in this study that this class of material could be a potential candidate for temperature-sensing applications.

Capillary-Flow-Optimized Heat Localization Induced by an Air-Enclosed Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Network for Elevated Solar Evaporation

Solar evaporation is a cost-effective way for obtaining clean water using renewable energy. However, many solar evaporation devices still show unsatisfactory performance and suffer from inefficient utilization of absorbed solar energy. Herein, numerical simulations of solar evaporation demonstrate that the heat management is a key factor governing the solar evaporation efficiency. This prediction is confirmed through using a bilayered solar steam generation architecture [hollow glass microsphere-carbon black (HS-CB)] both in laboratory- and pilot-scale studies. The HS-CB consists of a CB film as a solar-thermal conversion layer and three-dimensional hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride skeleton cross-linking HSs as a heat localization and water-transporting layer. A balance between thermal insulation and capillary-driven water transport can be reached by tuning the porosity of the thermal-insulating layer, thus inducing optimized heat localization. The proposed structure evaporates water with an efficiency of 82.1% under 1 sun irradiance (1 kW m^-2) in the laboratory and can even stably produce 4.63 L m^-2 d^-1 (average efficiency of 37%) of purified water from highly concentrated industrial waste water in the pilot study, demonstrating its promising potential for applications in seawater desalination and brackish water purification.

Stable radical anions generated from a porous perylenediimide metal-organic framework for boosting near-infrared photothermal conversion

Radical anions of electron-deficient systems are widely used, but are easily reoxidized upon exposure to air. Therefore, the stabilization of radical anions under ambient conditions is of great significance, but still remains a scientific challenge. Herein, perylenediimide is employed to prepare a crystalline metal-organic framework for stabilizing radical anions without extensive chemical modification. The porous, three-dimensional framework of perylenediimide can trap electron donors such as amine vapors and produce radical anions in-situ through photo-induced electron transfer. The radical anions are protected against quenching by shielding effect in air and remain unobstructed in air for at least a month. Because of the high yield and stability of the radical anions, which are the basis for near-infrared photothermal conversion, the framework shows high near-infrared photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 52.3%). The work provides an efficient and simple method towards ambient stable radical anions and affords a promising material for photothermal therapy.

Solution Grown Single-Unit-Cell Quantum Wires Affording Self-Powered Solar-Blind UV Photodetectors with Ultrahigh Selectivity and Sensitivity

As crystalline semiconductor nanowires are thinned down to a single-unit-cell thickness, many fascinating properties could arise pointing to promising applications in various fields. A grand challenge is to be able to controllably synthesize such ultrathin nanowires. Herein, we report a strategy, which synergizes a soft template with oriented attachment (ST-OA), to prepare high-quality single-unit-cell semiconductor nanowires (SSNWs). Using this protocol, we are able to synthesize for the first time ZnS and ZnSe nanowires (NWs) with only a single-unit-cell thickness (less than 1.0 nm) and a cluster-like absorption feature (i.e., with a sharp, strong, and significantly blue-shifted absorption peak). Particularly, the growth mechanism and the single-unit-cell structure of the as-prepared ZnS SSNWs are firmly established by both experimental observations and theoretical calculations. Thanks to falling into the extreme quantum confinement regime, these NWs are found to only absorb the light with wavelengths shorter than 280 nm (i.e., solar-blind UV absorption). Utilizing such a unique property, self-powered photoelectrochemical-type photodetectors (PEC PDs) based on the ZnS SSNWs are successfully fabricated. The PDs after interface modification with TiO₂ exhibit an excellent solar-blind UV photoresponse performance, with a typical on/off ratio of 6008, a detectivity of 1.5 × 10¹² Jones, and a responsivity of 33.7 mA/W. This work opens the door to synthesizing and investigating a new dimension of nanomaterials with a wide range of applications.

The Sub-Nanometer Scale as a New Focus in Nanoscience

Size is one of the central issues in nanoscience. The practical meaning of the term "sub-nanometric material (SNM)" requires two aspects: (1) its size should be at the atomic level; (2) it shows unique (size-related) properties compared to its nano-counterparts with larger sizes. Here, SNMs in the form of wires (SNWs) and the unique properties arising from their special size are reviewed. First, their polymer-like behavior, including rheological behavior and self-assembly, is dicussed. Their origins may stem from the special size and the ligands around the wire. Even a slight increase in diameter would risk the polymer-like behavior. Meanwhile, the ligands on SNWs are proportional to the inorganic entity at this scale. Consequently, surface ligands should have a profound impact on the properties, like catalysis, self-assembly, optics, etc. To reveal more potential applications, their applications in energy conversion are comprehensively reviewed. To some extent, characterization can greatly influence the way things are observed. Thus, some appropriate characterization techniques are briefly introduced. Finally, another emerging part of SNWs (atomic chain material) is briefly introduced. It is hoped that this review can provide new insights to this special scale.
