Real-space nanoimaging of THz polaritons in the topological insulator Bi2Se3

Highly confined epsilon-near-zero and surface phonon polaritons in SrTiO3 membranes

Recent theoretical studies have suggested that transition metal perovskite oxide membranes can enable surface phonon polaritons in the infrared range with low loss and much stronger subwavelength confinement than bulk crystals. Such modes, however, have not been experimentally observed so far. Here, using a combination of far-field Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and near-field synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy (SINS) imaging, we study the phonon polaritons in a 100 nm thick freestanding crystalline membrane of SrTiO3 transferred on metallic and dielectric substrates. We observe a symmetric-antisymmetric mode splitting giving rise to epsilon-near-zero and Berreman modes as well as highly confined (by a factor of 10) propagating phonon polaritons, both of which result from the deep-subwavelength thickness of the membranes. Theoretical modeling based on the analytical finite-dipole model and numerical finite-difference methods fully corroborate the experimental results. Our work reveals the potential of oxide membranes as a promising platform for infrared photonics and polaritonics.

Holographic Nano-Imaging of Terahertz Dirac Plasmon Polaritons in Topological Insulator Antenna Resonators

Excitation of Dirac plasmon polaritons (DPPs) in bi-dimensional materials have attracted considerable interest in recent years, both from perspectives of understanding their physics and exploring their transformative potential for nanophotonic devices, including ultra-sensitive plasmonic sensors, ultrafast saturable absorbers, modulators, and switches. Topological insulators (TIs) represent an ideal technological platform in this respect because they can support plasmon polaritons formed by Dirac carriers in the topological surface states. Tracing propagation of DPPs is a very challenging task, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies, where the DPP wavelength becomes over one order of magnitude shorter than the free space photon wavelength. Furthermore, severe attenuation hinders the comprehensive analysis of their characteristics. Here, the properties of DPPs in real TI-based devices are revealed. Bi2Se3 rectangular antennas can efficiently confine the propagation of DPPs to a single dimension and, as a result, enhance the DPPs visibility despite the strong intrinsic attenuation. The plasmon dispersion and loss properties from plasmon profiles are experimentally determined, along the antennas, obtained using holographic near-field nano-imaging in a wide range of THz frequencies, from 2.05 to 4.3 THz. The detailed investigation of the unveiled DPP properties can guide the design of novel topological quantum devices exploiting their directional propagation.

Near-Field Terahertz Morphological Reconstruction Nanoscopy for Subsurface Imaging of Protein Layers

Protein layers formed on solid surfaces have important applications in various fields. High-resolution characterization of the morphological structures of protein forms in the process of developing protein layers has significant implications for the control of the layer's quality as well as for the evaluation of the layer's performance. However, it remains challenging to precisely characterize all possible morphological structures of protein in various forms, including individuals, networks, and layers involved in the formation of protein layers with currently available methods. Here, we report a terahertz (THz) morphological reconstruction nanoscopy (THz-MRN), which can reveal the nanoscale three-dimensional structural information on a protein sample from its THz near-field image by exploiting an extended finite dipole model for a thin sample. THz-MRN allows for both surface imaging and subsurface imaging with a vertical resolution of ∼0.5 nm, enabling the characterization of various forms of proteins at the single-molecule level. We demonstrate the imaging and morphological reconstruction of single immunoglobulin G (IgG) molecules, their networks, a monolayer, and a heterogeneous double layer comprising an IgG monolayer and a horseradish peroxidase-conjugated anti-IgG layer. The established THz-MRN presents a useful approach for the label-free and nondestructive study of the formation of protein layers.

Ultrabroadband Terahertz Near-Field Nanospectroscopy with a HgCdTe Detector

While near-field infrared nanospectroscopy provides a powerful tool for nanoscale material characterization, broadband nanospectroscopy of elementary material excitations in the single-digit terahertz (THz) range remains relatively unexplored. Here, we study liquid-Helium-cooled photoconductive Hg1-XCdXTe (MCT) for use as a fast detector in near-field nanospectroscopy. Compared to the common T = 77 K operation, liquid-Helium cooling reduces the MCT detection threshold to ∼22 meV, improves the noise performance, and yields a response bandwidth exceeding 10 MHz. These improved detector properties have a profound impact on the near-field technique, enabling unprecedented broadband nanospectroscopy across a range of 5 to >50 THz (175 to >1750 cm-1, or <6 to 57 μm), i.e., covering what is commonly known as the "THz gap". Our approach has been implemented as a user program at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, Upton, USA, where we showcase ultrabroadband synchrotron nanospectroscopy of phonons in ZnSe (∼7.8 THz) and BaF2 (∼6.7 THz), as well as hyperbolic phonon polaritons in GeS (6-8 THz).

Terahertz label-free detection of nicotine-induced neural cell changes and the underlying mechanisms

Nicotine exposure can lead to neurological impairments and brain tumors, and a label-free and nondestructive detection technique is urgently required by the scientific community to assess the effects of nicotine on neural cells. Herein, a terahertz (THz) time-domain attenuated total reflection (TD-ATR) spectroscopy approach is reported, by which the effects of nicotine on normal and cancerous neural cells, i.e., HEB and U87 cells, are successfully investigated in a label/stain-free and nondestructive manner. The obtained THz absorption coefficients of HEB cells exposed to low-dose nicotine and high-dose nicotine are smaller and larger, respectively, than the untreated cells. In contrast, the THz absorption coefficients of U87 cells treated by nicotine are always smaller than the untreated cells. The THz absorption coefficients can be well related to the proliferation properties (cell number and compositional changes) and morphological changes of neural cells, by which different types of neural cells are differentiated and the viabilities of neural cells treated by nicotine are reliably assessed. Collectively, this work sheds new insights on the effects of nicotine on neural cells, and provides a useful tool (THz TD-ATR spectroscopy) for the study of chemical-cell interactions.

Near- and Far-Field Observation of Phonon Polaritons in Wafer-Scale Multilayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride Prepared by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Polaritons in layered materials (LMs) are a promising platform to manipulate and control light at the nanometer scale. Thus, the observation of polaritons in wafer-scale LMs is critically important for the development of industrially relevant nanophotonics and optoelectronics applications. In this work, phonon polaritons (PhPs) in wafer-scale multilayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) grown by chemical vapor deposition are reported. By infrared nanoimaging, the PhPs are visualized, and PhP lifetimes of ≈0.6 ps are measured, comparable to that of micromechanically exfoliated multilayer hBN. Further, PhP nanoresonators are demonstrated. Their quality factors of ≈50 are about 0.7 times that of state-of-the-art devices based on exfoliated hBN. These results can enable PhP-based surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy (e.g., for gas sensing) and infrared photodetector applications.

Rough surface effect in terahertz near-field microscopy: 3D simulation analysis

Terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (THz-s-SNOM) has emerged as a powerful technique for high-resolution imaging. However, most previous studies have focused on simplified smooth surface models, overlooking the realistic surface roughness induced by contamination during sample preparation. In this work, we present a novel 3D model, to the best of our knowledge, that combines the point dipole model with the finite element method to investigate the influence of sample morphology on scattered signals. We explore surfaces with a protrusion, a depression, and random roughness, characterizing the variations in scattered signals and highlighting the role of higher-order scattering in mitigating surface roughness effects. Our findings provide valuable insights into the impact of sample morphology on THz-s-SNOM imaging.

Near-Field Spectroscopy of Individual Asymmetric Split-Ring Terahertz Resonators

Metamaterial resonators have become an efficient and versatile platform in the terahertz frequency range, finding applications in integrated optical devices, such as active modulators and detectors, and in fundamental research, e.g., ultrastrong light-matter investigations. Despite their growing use, characterization of modes supported by these subwavelength elements has proven to be challenging and it still relies on indirect observation of the collective far-field transmission/reflection properties of resonator arrays. Here, we present a broadband time-domain spectroscopic investigation of individual metamaterial resonators via a THz aperture scanning near-field microscope (a-SNOM). The time-domain a-SNOM allows the mapping and quantitative analysis of strongly confined modes supported by the resonators. In particular, a cross-polarized configuration presented here allows an investigation of weakly radiative modes. These results hold great potential to advance future metamaterial-based optoelectronic platforms for fundamental research in THz photonics.

Sub-terahertz scanning near-field optical microscope using a quartz tuning fork based probe

We report a sub-terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field microscope (sub-THz s-SNOM) which uses a 6 mm long metallic tip driven by a quartz tuning fork as the near-field probe. Under continuous-wave illumination by a 94 GHz Gunn diode oscillator, terahertz near-field images are obtained by demodulating the scattered wave at both the fundamental and the second harmonic of the tuning fork oscillation frequency together with the atomic-force-microscope (AFM) image. The terahertz near-field image of a gold grating with a period of 2.3 µm obtained at the fundamental modulation frequency agrees well with the AFM image. The experimental relationship between the signal demodulated at the fundamental frequency and the tip-sample distance is well fitted with the coupled dipole model indicating that the scattered signal from the long probe is mainly contributed by the near-field interaction between the tip and the sample. This near-filed probe scheme using quartz tuning fork can adjust the tip length flexibly to match the wavelength over the entire terahertz frequency range and allows for operation in cryogenic environment.

Graphene Nano-Optics in the Terahertz Gap

Graphene nano-optics at terahertz (THz) frequencies (ν) is theoretically anticipated to feature extraordinary effects. However, interrogating such phenomena is nontrivial, since the atomically thin graphene dimensionally mismatches the THz radiation wavelength reaching hundreds of micrometers. Greater challenges happen in the THz gap (0.1-10 THz) wherein light sources are scarce. To surpass these barriers, we use a nanoscope illuminated by a highly brilliant and tunable free-electron laser to image the graphene nano-optical response from 1.5 to 6.0 THz. For ν < 2 THz, we observe a metal-like behavior of graphene, which screens optical fields akin to noble metals, since this excitation range approaches its charge relaxation frequency. At 3.8 THz, plasmonic resonances cause a field-enhancement effect (FEE) that improves the graphene imaging power. Moreover, we show that the metallic behavior and the FEE are tunable upon electrical doping, thus providing further control of these graphene nano-optical properties in the THz gap.

Real-space observation of ultraconfined in-plane anisotropic acoustic terahertz plasmon polaritons

Thin layers of in-plane anisotropic materials can support ultraconfined polaritons, whose wavelengths depend on the propagation direction. Such polaritons hold potential for the exploration of fundamental material properties and the development of novel nanophotonic devices. However, the real-space observation of ultraconfined in-plane anisotropic plasmon polaritons (PPs)-which exist in much broader spectral ranges than phonon polaritons-has been elusive. Here we apply terahertz nanoscopy to image in-plane anisotropic low-energy PPs in monoclinic Ag₂Te platelets. The hybridization of the PPs with their mirror image-by placing the platelets above a Au layer-increases the direction-dependent relative polariton propagation length and the directional polariton confinement. This allows for verifying a linear dispersion and elliptical isofrequency contour in momentum space, revealing in-plane anisotropic acoustic terahertz PPs. Our work shows high-symmetry (elliptical) polaritons on low-symmetry (monoclinic) crystals and demonstrates the use of terahertz PPs for local measurements of anisotropic charge carrier masses and damping.

Broadband Optical Properties of Bi2Se3

Materials with high optical constants are of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in nanophotonics applications. Recent advances in materials science have revealed that van der Waals (vdW) materials have large optical responses owing to strong in-plane covalent bonding and weak out-of-plane vdW interactions. However, the optical constants of vdW materials depend on numerous factors, e.g., synthesis and transfer method. Here, we demonstrate that in a broad spectral range (290-3300 nm) the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k of Bi₂Se₃ are almost independent of synthesis technology, with only a ~10% difference in n and k between synthesis approaches, unlike other vdW materials, such as MoS₂, which has a ~60% difference between synthesis approaches. As a practical demonstration, we showed, using the examples of biosensors and therapeutic nanoparticles, that this slight difference in optical constants results in reproducible efficiency in Bi₂Se₃-based photonic devices.

Imaging the Terahertz Nanoscale Conductivity of Polycrystalline CsPbBr3 Perovskite Thin Films

Terahertz (THz) radiation is a valuable tool to investigate the electronic properties of lead halide perovskites (LHPs). However, attaining high-resolution information remains elusive, as the diffraction-limited spatial resolution (∼300 μm) of conventional THz methods prevents a direct analysis of microscopic effects. Here, we employ THz scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (THz-sSNOM) for nanoscale imaging of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr₃) thin films down to the single grain level at 600 GHz. Adopting a scattering model, we are able to derive the local THz nanoscale conductivity in a contact-free fashion. Increased THz near-field signals at CsPbBr₃ grain boundaries complemented by correlative transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental analysis point to the formation of halide vacancies (V_Br) and Pb-Pb bonds, which induce charge carrier trapping and can lead to nonradiative recombination. Our study establishes THz-sSNOM as a powerful THz nanoscale analysis platform for thin-film semiconductors such as LHPs.

Topological Insulator Metamaterials

Confinement of electromagnetic fields at the subwavelength scale via metamaterial paradigms is an established method to engineer light-matter interaction in most common material systems, from insulators to semiconductors and from metals to superconductors. In recent years, this approach has been extended to the realm of topological materials, providing a new avenue to access nontrivial features of their electronic band structure. In this review, we survey various topological material classes from a photonics standpoint, including crystal growth and lithographic structuring methods. We discuss how exotic electronic features such as spin-selective Dirac plasmon polaritons in topological insulators or hyperbolic plasmon polaritons in Weyl semimetals may give rise to unconventional magneto-optic, nonlinear, and circular photogalvanic effects in metamaterials across the visible to infrared spectrum. Finally, we dwell on how these effects may be dynamically controlled by applying external perturbations in the form of electric and magnetic fields or ultrafast optical pulses. Through these examples and future perspectives, we argue that topological insulator, semimetal and superconductor metamaterials are unique systems to bridge the missing links between nanophotonic, electronic, and spintronic technologies.

Programmable Polariton Topological Insulators All-Optically Controlled by the Stark Effect

Efficiently and flexibly manipulating unidirectional edge states is key to developing topological insulators as functional devices. In this work, we propose an all-optical method that utilizes the valley-selective optical Stark effect to realize programmable topological insulators. We pattern a two-dimensional honeycomb structure in an exciton-polariton platform resulting from a strong light-matter coupling in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide. The optical Stark effect is induced to generate a pseudo magnetic field, combined with spin-orbit coupling to form the topological one-way edge states of the polariton. On account of the ultrafast switching speed and precisely spatial controllability of the optical Stark effect, two applications, i.e., ports ratio tunable polariton splitter and programmable polariton router, were demonstrated, showing designable and rewritable functionality of all-optically controllable polariton topological insulators. This study paves the way to robustly and intelligently control/form polaritonic and spintronic devices for future classical and quantum information processing and application.

Germanium Monosulfide as a Natural Platform for Highly Anisotropic THz Polaritons

Terahertz (THz) electromagnetic radiation is key to access collective excitations such as magnons (spins), plasmons (electrons), or phonons (atomic vibrations), thus bridging topics between optics and solid-state physics. Confinement of THz light to the nanometer length scale is desirable for local probing of such excitations in low-dimensional systems, thereby circumventing the large footprint and inherently low spectral power density of far-field THz radiation. For that purpose, phonon polaritons (PhPs) in anisotropic van der Waals (vdW) materials have recently emerged as a promising platform for THz nanooptics. Hence, there is a demand for the exploration of materials that feature not only THz PhPs at different spectral regimes but also host anisotropic (directional) electrical, thermoelectric, and vibronic properties. To that end, we introduce here the semiconducting vdW-material alpha-germanium(II) sulfide (GeS) as an intriguing candidate. By employing THz nanospectroscopy supported by theoretical analysis, we provide a thorough characterization of the different in-plane hyperbolic and elliptical PhP modes in GeS. We find not only PhPs with long lifetimes (τ > 2 ps) and excellent THz light confinement (λ0/λ > 45) but also an intrinsic, phonon-induced anomalous dispersion as well as signatures of naturally occurring, substrate-mediated PhP canalization within a single GeS slab.

Two-dimensional Dirac plasmon-polaritons in graphene, 3D topological insulator and hybrid systems

Collective oscillations of massless particles in two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials offer an innovative route toward implementing atomically thin devices based on low-energy quasiparticle interactions. Strong confinement of near-field distribution on the 2D surface is essential to demonstrate extraordinary optoelectronic functions, providing means to shape the spectral response at the mid-infrared (IR) wavelength. Although the dynamic polarization from the linear response theory has successfully accounted for a range of experimental observations, a unified perspective was still elusive, connecting the state-of-the-art developments based on the 2D Dirac plasmon-polaritons. Here, we review recent works on graphene and three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) plasmon-polariton, where the mid-IR and terahertz (THz) radiation experiences prominent confinement into a deep-subwavelength scale in a novel optoelectronic structure. After presenting general light-matter interactions between 2D Dirac plasmon and subwavelength quasiparticle excitations, we introduce various experimental techniques to couple the plasmon-polaritons with electromagnetic radiations. Electrical and optical controls over the plasmonic excitations reveal the hybridized plasmon modes in graphene and 3D TI, demonstrating an intense near-field interaction of 2D Dirac plasmon within the highly-compressed volume. These findings can further be applied to invent optoelectronic bio-molecular sensors, atomically thin photodetectors, and laser-driven light sources.

Self-Induced Phase Locking of Terahertz Frequency Combs in a Phase-Sensitive Hyperspectral Near-Field Nanoscope

Chip-scale, electrically-pumped terahertz (THz) frequency-combs (FCs) rely on nonlinear four-wave-mixing processes, and have a nontrivial phase relationship between the evenly spaced set of emitted modes. Simultaneous monitoring and manipulation of the intermode phase coherence, without any external seeding or active modulation, is a very demanding task for which there has hitherto been no technological solution. Here, a self-mixing intermode-beatnote spectroscopy system is demonstrated, based on THz quantum cascade laser FCs, in which light is back-scattered from the tip of a scanning near-field optical-microscope (SNOM) and the intracavity reinjection monitored. This enables to exploit the sensitivity of FC phase-coherence to optical feedback and, for the first time, manipulate the amplitude, linewidth and frequency of the intermode THz FC beatnote using the feedback itself. Stable phase-locked regimes are used to construct a FC-based hyperspectral, THz s-SNOM nanoscope. This nanoscope provides 160 nm spatial resolution, coherent detection of multiple phase-locked modes, and mapping of the THz optical response of nanoscale materials up to 3.5 THz, with noise-equivalent-power (NEP) ≈400 pW √Hz^-1 . This technique can be applied to the entire infrared range, opening up a new approach to hyper-spectral near-field imaging with wide-scale applications in the study of plasmonics and quantum science, inter alia.

Closing the THz gap with Dirac semimetals

High-performance THz photodetection is unprecedentedly accessed by integrating a topological Dirac (Weyl) semimetal in a carefully designed antenna at deep-subwavelength scales.
