Unveiling the photocatalytic marvels: Recent advances in solar heterojunctions for environmental remediation and energy harvesting

In the quest for effective solutions to address Environ. Pollut. and meet the escalating energy demands, heterojunction photocatalysts have emerged as a captivating and versatile technology. These photocatalysts have garnered significant interest due to their wide-ranging applications, including wastewater treatment, air purification, CO2 capture, and hydrogen generation via water splitting. This technique harnesses the power of semiconductors, which are activated under light illumination, providing the necessary energy for catalytic reactions. With visible light constituting a substantial portion (46%) of the solar spectrum, the development of visible-light-driven semiconductors has become imperative. Heterojunction photocatalysts offer a promising strategy to overcome the limitations associated with activating semiconductors under visible light. In this comprehensive review, we present the recent advancements in the field of photocatalytic degradation of contaminants across diverse media, as well as the remarkable progress made in renewable energy production. Moreover, we delve into the crucial role played by various operating parameters in influencing the photocatalytic performance of heterojunction systems. Finally, we address emerging challenges and propose novel perspectives to provide valuable insights for future advancements in this dynamic research domain. By unraveling the potential of heterojunction photocatalysts, this review contributes to the broader understanding of their applications and paves the way for exciting avenues of exploration and innovation.

Recent advances in biomaterials based near-infrared mild photothermal therapy for biomedical application: A review

Mild photothermal therapy (MPTT) generates heat therapeutic effect at the temperature below 45 °C under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which has the advantages of controllable treatment efficacy, lower hyperthermia temperatures, reduced dosage, and minimized damage to surrounding tissues. Despite significant progress has been achieved in MPTT, it remains primarily in the stage of basic and clinical research and has not yet seen widespread clinical adoption. Herein, a comprehensive overview of the recent NIR MPTT development was provided, aiming to emphasize the mechanism and obstacles, summarize the used photothermal agents, and introduce various biomedical applications such as anti-tumor, wound healing, and vascular disease treatment. The challenges of MPTT were proposed with potential solutions, and the future development direction in MPTT was outlooked to enhance the prospects for clinical translation.

Processing polymer photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Conjugated materials have emerged as competitive photocatalysts for the production of sustainable hydrogen from water over the last decade. Interest in these polymer photocatalysts stems from the relative ease to tune their electronic properties through molecular engineering, and their potentially low cost. However, most polymer photocatalysts have only been utilised in rudimentary suspension-based photocatalytic reactors, which are not scalable as these systems can suffer from significant optical losses and often require constant agitation to maintain the suspension. Here, we will explore research performed to utilise polymeric photocatalysts in more sophisticated systems, such as films or as nanoparticulate suspensions, which can enhance photocatalytic performance or act as a demonstration of how the polymer can be scaled for real-world applications. We will also discuss how the systems were prepared and consider both the benefits and drawbacks of each system before concluding with an outlook on the field of processable polymer photocatalysts.

Covalently linked molecular catalysts in conjugated polymer dots boost photocatalytic alcohol oxidation in neutral condition

As a new class of organic photocatalysts, polymer dots show a potential application in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production coupled with chemical oxidation such as methanol oxidation. However, the poor methanol oxidation ability by polymer dots still inhibits the overall photocatalytic reaction occurring in the neutral condition. In this work, an organic molecular catalyst 4-amino-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical is covalently linked to a fluorene unit in a polymer skeleton, eventually enabling photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production coupled with methanol oxidation in the neutral condition. By conducting various spectroscopic measurements, charge transfer between components in this molecular catalyst-immobilized polymer dots system is studied and found to be very efficient for hydrogen peroxide production coupled with alcohol oxidation. This work proves a strategy for designing polymer dots photocatalysts with molecular catalysts, facilitating their future development and potential applications in other fields such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, photoredox catalysis and photodynamic therapy.

Symmetry-breaking of Dibenzo[b,d]thiophene Sulfone Enhancing Polaron Generation for Boosted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

The current bottleneck in the development of efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution is the limited availability of high-performance acceptor units. Over the past nine years, dibenzo[b,d]thiophene sulfone (DBS) has been the preferred choice for the acceptor unit. Despite extensive exploration of alternative structures as potential replacements for DBS, a superior substitute remains elusive. In this study, a symmetry-breaking strategy was employed on DBS to develop a novel acceptor unit, BBTT-1SO. The asymmetric structure of BBTT-1SO proved beneficial for increasing multiple moment and polarizability. BBTT-1SO-containing polymers showed higher efficiencies for hydrogen evolution than their DBS-containing counterparts by up to 166 %. PBBTT-1SO exhibited an excellent hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 222.03 mmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield of 27.5 % at 500 nm. Transient spectroscopic studies indicated that the BBTT-1SO-based polymers facilitated electron polaron formation, which explains their superior HERs. PBBTT-1SO also showed 14 % higher HER in natural seawater splitting than that in deionized water splitting. Molecular dynamics simulations highlighted the enhanced water-PBBTT-1SO polymer interactions in salt-containing solutions. This study presents a pioneering example of a substitute acceptor unit for DBS in the construction of high-performance photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

The Nanoscale Structure and Stability of Organic Photovoltaic Blends Processed with Solvent Additives

Controlling the nanomorphology in bulk heterojunction photoactive blends is crucial for optimizing the performance and stability of organic photovoltaic (OPV) technologies. A promising approach is to alter the drying dynamics and consequently, the nanostructure of the blend film using solvent additives such as 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO). Although this approach is demonstrated extensively for OPV systems incorporating fullerene-based acceptors, it is unclear how solvent additive processing influences the morphology and stability of nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) systems. Here, small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is used to probe the nanomorphology of two model OPV systems processed with DIO: a fullerene-based system (PBDB-T:PC71BM) and an NFA-based system (PBDB-T:ITIC). To overcome the low intrinsic neutron scattering length density contrast in polymer:NFA blend films, the synthesis of a deuterated NFA analog (ITIC-d52) is reported. Using SANS, new insights into the nanoscale evolution of fullerene and NFA-based systems are provided by characterizing films immediately after fabrication, after thermal annealing, and after aging for 1 year. It is found that DIO processing influences fullerene and NFA-based systems differently with NFA-based systems characterized by more phase-separated domains. After long-term aging, SANS reveals both systems demonstrate some level of thermodynamic induced domain coarsening.

Synergistic effect of Na doping and CoSe2 cocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn2S4

Element doping has been demonstrated as a useful strategy to regulate the band gap and electronic structure of photocatalyst for improving photocatalytic activity. Herein, ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets were doped with alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+ or K+) by a simple solution method. Experimental characterizations reveal that alkali metal ions doping reduce the band gap, raise the conduction band position, and improve surface hydrophilicity of ZIS. In addition, theoretical calculations show that Na doping increases the electron density at valence band maximum and surrounding S atom, which is conducive to produce more electrons and effective utilization of electrons, respectively. Benefited from above factors, Na-doped ZIS (Na-ZIS) shows the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Furthermore, CoSe2 cocatalyst is loaded on the surface of Na-ZIS (CS/Na-ZIS), which further improve the charge separation and prolong the lifetime of charges. As a result, the optimized CS/Na-ZIS shows a H2 evolution rate of 4525 μmol·g-1·h-1 with an apparent quantum efficiency of 27.5 % at 420 nm, which are much higher than that of pure ZIS. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the synergistic effect of Na doping and CoSe2 cocatalyst in ameliorating photocatalytic activity.

Deep Red Light Driven Hydrogen Evolution by Heterojunction Polymer Dots for Diabetic Wound Healing

We describe small heterojunction polymer dots (Pdots) with deep-red light catalyzed H2 generation for diabetic skin wound healing. The Pdots with donor/acceptor heterojunctions showed remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to the donor or acceptor nanoparticles alone. We encapsulate the Pdots and ascorbic acid into liposomes to form Lipo-Pdots nanoreactors, which selectively scavenge ⋅OH radicals in live cells and tissues under 650 nm light illumination. The antioxidant capacity of the heterojunction Pdots is ~10 times higher than that of the single-component Pdots described previously. Under a total light dose of 360 J/cm2, the Lipo-Pdots nanoreactors effectively scavenged ⋅OH radicals and suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in skin tissues, thereby accelerating the healing of skin wounds in diabetic mice. This study provides a feasible solution for safe and effective treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

Oxygen vacancy-rich high-pressure rocksalt phase of zinc oxide for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The generation of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier by photocatalysis, as a zero-emission technology, is of significant scientific and industrial interest. However, the main drawback of photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water splitting is its low efficiency compared to traditional chemical or electrochemical methods. Zinc oxide (ZnO) with the wurtzite phase is one of the most investigated photocatalysts for hydrogen production, but its activity still needs to be improved. In this study, an oxygen-deficient high-pressure ZnO rocksalt phase is stabilized using a high-pressure torsion (HPT) method, and the product is used for photocatalysis under ambient pressure. The simultaneous introduction of oxygen vacancies and the rocksalt phase effectively improved photocatalytic hydrogen production to levels comparable to benchmark P25 TiO2, due to improving light absorbance and providing active sites for photocatalysis without any negative effect on electron-hole recombination. These results confirm the high potential of high-pressure phases for photocatalytic hydrogen generation.

Organic Donor-Acceptor-Donor Trimers Nanoparticles Stabilized by Amphiphilic Block Copolymers for Photocatalytic Generation of H2

Photocatalytic generation of H2 via water splitting emerges as a promising avenue for the next generation of green hydrogen due to its low carbon footprint. Herein, a versatile platform is designed to the preparation of functional π-conjugated organic nanoparticles dispersed in aqueous phase via mini-emulsification. Such particles are composed of donor-acceptor-donor (DAD) trimers prepared via Stille coupling, stabilized by amphiphilic block copolymers synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The hydrophilic segment of the block copolymers will not only provide colloidal stability, but also allow for precise control over the surface functionalization. Photocatalytic tests of the resulting particles for H2 production resulted in promising photocatalytic activity (≈0.6 mmol g-1 h-1). This activity is much enhanced compared to that of DAD trimers dispersed in the water phase without stabilization by the block copolymers.

Hydrophilic Photocrosslinkers as a Universal Solution to Endow Water Affinity to a Polymer Photocatalyst for an Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Rate

A universal approach for enhancing water affinity in polymer photocatalysts by covalently attaching hydrophilic photocrosslinkers to polymer chains is presented. A series of bisdiazirine photocrosslinkers, each comprising bisdiazirine photophores linked by various aliphatic (CL-R) or ethylene glycol-based bridge chains (CL-TEG), is designed to prevent crosslinked polymer photocatalysts from degradation through a safe and efficient photocrosslinking reaction at a wavelength of 365 nm. When employing the hydrophilic CL-TEG as a photocrosslinker with polymer photocatalysts (F8BT), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) rate is considerably enhanced by 2.5-fold compared to that obtained using non-crosslinked F8BT photocatalysts, whereas CL-R-based photocatalysts yield HER rates comparable to those of non-crosslinked counterparts. Photophysical analyses including time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption measurements reveal that adding CL-TEG accelerates exciton separation, forming long-lived charge carriers. Additionally, the in-depth study using molecular dynamics simulations elucidates the dual role of CL-TEG: it enhances water penetration into the polymer matrix and stabilizes charge carriers after exciton generation against undesirable recombination. Therefore, the strategy highlights endowing a high-permittivity environment within polymer photocatalyst in a controlled manner is crucial for enhancing photocatalytic redox reactivity. Furthermore, this study shows that this hydrophilic crosslinker approach has a broad applicability in general polymer semiconductors and their nanoparticulate photocatalysts.

Organic Semiconductor-BiVO4 Tandem Devices for Solar-Driven H2O and CO2 Splitting

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices offer a promising platform toward direct solar light harvesting and chemical storage through artificial photosynthesis. However, most prototypes employ wide bandgap semiconductors, moisture-sensitive inorganic light absorbers, or corrosive electrolytes. Here, the design and assembly of PEC devices based on an organic donor-acceptor bulk heterojunction (BHJ) using a carbon-based encapsulant are introduced, which demonstrate long-term H2 evolution and CO2 reduction in benign aqueous media. Accordingly, PCE10:EH-IDTBR photocathodes display long-term H2 production for 300 h in a near-neutral pH solution, whereas photocathodes with a molecular CO2 reduction catalyst attain a CO:H2 selectivity of 5.41±0.53 under 0.1 sun irradiation. Their early onset potential enables the construction of tandem PCE10:EH-IDTBR - BiVO4 artificial leaves, which couple unassisted syngas production with O2 evolution in a reactor completely powered by sunlight, sustaining a 1:1 ratio of CO to H2 over 96 h of operation.

Achieving a solar-to-chemical efficiency of 3.6% in ambient conditions by inhibiting interlayer charges transport

Efficiently converting solar energy into chemical energy remains a formidable challenge in artificial photosynthetic systems. To date, rarely has an artificial photosynthetic system operating in the open air surpassed the highest solar-to-biomass conversion efficiency (1%) observed in plants. In this study, we present a three-dimension polymeric photocatalyst achieving a solar-to-H2O2 conversion efficiency of 3.6% under ambient conditions, including real water, open air, and room temperature. The impressive performance is attributed to the efficient storage of electrons inside materials via expeditious intramolecular charge transfer, and the fast extraction of the stored electrons by O2 that can diffuse into the internal pores of the self-supporting three-dimensional material. This construction strategy suppresses the interlayer transfer of excitons, polarizers and carriers, effectively increases the utilization of internal excitons to 82%. This breakthrough provides a perspective to substantially enhance photocatalytic performance and bear substantial implications for sustainable energy generation and environmental remediation.

Delocalizing Excitation for Highly-Active Organic Photovoltaic Catalysts

Localized excitation in traditional organic photocatalysts typically prevents the generation and extraction of photo-induced free charge carriers, limiting their activity enhancement under illumination. Here, we enhance delocalized photoexcitation of small molecular photovoltaic catalysts by weakening their electron-phonon coupling via rational fluoro-substitution. The optimized 2FBP-4F catalyst we develop here exhibits a minimized Huang-Rhys factor of 0.35 in solution, high dielectric constant and strong crystallization in the solid state. As a result, the energy barrier for exciton dissociation is decreased, and more importantly, polarons are unusually observed in 2FBP-4F nanoparticles (NPs). With the increased hole transfer efficiency and prolonged charge carrier lifetime highly related to enhanced exciton delocalization, the PM6 : 2FBP-4F heterojunction NPs at varied concentration exhibit much higher optimized photocatalytic activity (207.6-561.8 mmol h-1 g-1) for hydrogen evolution than the control PM6 : BP-4F and PM6 : 2FBP-6F NPs, as well as other reported photocatalysts under simulated solar light (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm-2).

Organizing Photosensitive and Photothermal Single-Sites Uniformly in a Trimetallic Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Effective combination of the photosensitivity and photothermal property in photocatalyst is vital to achieve the maximum light utilization for superior photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, this work successfully organizes photosensitive Cd-NS single-sites and photothermal Ni-NS single-sites uniformly at a molecular level within a tailored trimetallic metal-organic framework. The optimized Ho6-Cd0.76Ni0.24-NS exhibits a superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 40.06 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible-light irradiation and an apparent quantum efficiency of 29.37% at 420 nm without using cocatalysts or photosensitizers. A systematical mechanism study reveals that the uniformly organized photosensitive and photothermal single-sites have synergistic effect, which form ultrashort pathways for efficient transport of photoinduced electrons, suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, hence promote the hydrogen evolution activity. This work provides a promising approach for organizing dual-functional single-sites uniformly in photocatalyst for high-performance photocatalytic activity.

SGLT2 Inhibitors and Kidney Protection: Mechanisms Beyond Tubuloglomerular Feedback

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce the risk for kidney failure and are a key component of guideline-directed therapy for CKD. While SGLT2 inhibitors' ability to activate tubuloglomerular feedback and reduce hyperfiltration-mediated kidney injury is considered to be the central mechanism for kidney protection, recent data from experimental studies raise questions on the primacy of this mechanism. This review examines SGLT2 inhibitors' role in tubuloglomerular feedback and summarizes emerging evidence on following of SGLT2 inhibitors' other putative mechanisms for kidney protection: optimization of kidney's energy substrate utilization and delivery, regulation of autophagy and maintenance of cellular homeostasis, attenuation of sympathetic hyperactivity, and improvement in vascular health and microvascular function. It is imperative to examine the effect of SGLT2 inhibition on these different physiologic processes to help our understanding of mechanisms underpinning kidney protection with this important class of drugs.

Templated 2D Polymer Heterojunctions for Improved Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

2D polymers have emerged as one of the most promising classes of organic photocatalysts for solar fuel production due to their tunability, charge-transport properties, and robustness. They are however difficult to process and so there are limited studies into the formation of heterojunction materials incorporating these components. In this work, a novel templating approach is used to combine an imine-based donor polymer and an acceptor polymer formed through Knoevenagel condensation. Heterojunction formation is shown to be highly dependent on the topological match of the donor and acceptor polymers with the most active templated material found to be between three and nine times more active for photocatalysis than its constituent components. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that this improvement is due to faster charge separation and more efficient charge extraction in the templated heterojunction. The templated material shows a very high hydrogen evolution rate of >20 mmol h-1 m-2 with an ascorbic acid hole scavenger but also produces hydrogen in the presence of only water and a cobalt-based redox mediator. This suggests the improved charge-separation interface and reduced trapping accessed through this approach could be suitable for Z-scheme formation.

Charge Concentration Limits the Hydrogen Evolution Rate in Organic Nanoparticle Photocatalysts

Time-resolved microwave conductivity is used to compare aqueous-soluble organic nanoparticle photocatalysts and bulk thin films composed of the same mixture of semiconducting polymer and non-fullerene acceptor molecule and the relationship between composition, interfacial surface area, charge-carrier dynamics, and photocatalytic activity is examined. The rate of hydrogen evolution reaction by nanoparticles composed of various donor:acceptor blend ratio compositions is quantitatively measured, and it is found that the most active blend ratio displays a hydrogen quantum yield of 0.83% per photon. Moreover, it is found that nanoparticle photocatalytic activity corresponds directly to charge generation, and that nanoparticles have 3× more long-lived accumulated charges relative to bulk samples of the same material composition. These results suggest that, under the current reaction conditions, with ≈3× solar flux, catalytic activity by the nanoparticles is limited by the concentration of electrons and holes in operando and not a finite number of active surface sites or the catalytic rate at the interface. This provides a clear design goal for the next generation of efficient photocatalytic nanoparticles.

An All-In-One Integrating Strategy for Designing Platinum(II)-Based Supramolecular Polymers for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Organic polymer photocatalysts have achieved significant progress in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, while developing the integrated organic polymers possessing the functions of photosensitizer, electron transfer mediator, and catalyst simultaneously is urgently needed and presents a great challenge. Considering that chalcogenoviologens are able to act as photosensitizers and electron-transfer mediators, a series of chalcogenoviologen-containing platinum(II)-based supramolecular polymers is designed, which exhibited strong visible light-absorbing ability and suitable bandgap for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution without the use of a cocatalyst. The hydrogen evolution rate (HER) increases steadily with the decrease in an optical gap of the polymer. Among these "all-in-one" polymers, Se-containing 2D porous polymer exhibited the best photocatalytic performance with a HER of 3.09 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible light (>420 nm) irradiation. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the distinct intramolecular charge transfer characteristics and heteroatom N in terpyridine unit promote charge separation and transfer within the molecules. This work could provide new insights into the design of metallo-supramolecular polymers with finely tuned components for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water.

Emerging Light-Harvesting Materials Based on Organic Photovoltaic D/A Heterojunctions for Efficient Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen is a highly promising method to meet the surging energy consumption globally through the environmentally friendly means. As the initial step before photocatalysis, harvesting photons from sunlight is crucially important, thus making the design of photosensitizers with visible even near-infrared (NIR) absorptions get more and more attentions. In the past three years, organic donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions with absorptions extending to 950 nm, have emerged as the new star light-harvesting materials for photocatalytic water splitting, demonstrating exciting advantages over inorganic materials in solar light utilization, hydrogen yielding rate, etc. This Minireview firstly gives a brief discussion about the principle processes and determining factors for photocatalytic water splitting with organic photovoltaic D/A heterojunction as photosensitizers. Thereafter, the current progress is summarized in details by introducing typical and excellent D/A heterojunction-based photocatalytic systems. Finally, not only the great prospects but also the most challenging issues confronted by organic D/A heterojunctions are indicated along with a perspective on the opportunities and new directions for future material explorations.

Enhanced photocatalysis of metal/covalent organic frameworks by plasmonic nanoparticles and homo/hetero-junctions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention in photocatalysis due to their unique features including extensive surface area, adjustable pores, and the ability to incorporate various functional groups. However, challenges such as limited visible light absorption and rapid electron-hole recombination often hinder their photocatalytic efficiency. Recent developments have introduced plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) and junctions to enhance the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in MOF/COF-based photocatalysts improved by integration of plasmonic NPs and junctions. We begin by examining the utilization of plasmonic NPs, known for absorbing longer-wavelength light compared to typical MOFs/COFs. These NPs exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) when excited, effectively enhancing the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. Moreover, we discuss the role of homo/hetero-junctions in facilitating charge separation, further boosting the photocatalytic performance of MOFs/COFs. The mechanisms behind the improved photocatalytic performance of these composites are discussed, along with an assessment of challenges and opportunities in the field, guiding future research directions.

Recent Progress of Vertical Graphene: Preparation, Structure Engineering, and Emerging Energy Applications

Vertical graphene (VG) nanosheets have garnered significant attention in the field of electrochemical energy applications, such as supercapacitors, electro-catalysis, and metal-ion batteries. The distinctive structures of VG, including vertically oriented morphology, exposed, and extended edges, and separated few-layer graphene nanosheets, have endowed VG with superior electrode reaction kinetics and mass/electron transportation compared to other graphene-based nanostructures. Therefore, gaining insight into the structure-activity relationship of VG and VG-based materials is crucial for enhancing device performance and expanding their applications in the energy field. In this review, the authors first summarize the fabrication methods of VG structures, including solution-based, and vacuum-based techniques. The study then focuses on structural modulations through plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) to tailor defects and morphology, aiming to obtain desirable architectures. Additionally, a comprehensive overview of the applications of VG and VG-based hybrids d in the energy field is provided, considering the arrangement and optimization of their structures. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of VG-based energy-related applications are discussed.

Enhanced Photocatalytic and Photovoltaic Performance Arising from Unconventionally Low Donor-Y6 Ratios

Development of both organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and organic photocatalysts has focused on utilizing the bulk heterojunction (BHJ). The BHJ promotes charge separation and enhances the carrier lifetime, but may give rise to increased charge traps, hindering performance. Here, high photocatalytic and photovoltaic performance is displayed by electron donor-acceptor (D-A) nanoparticles (NPs) and films, using the nonfullerene acceptor Y6 and polymer donor PIDT-T8BT. In contrast to conventional D-A systems, the charge generation in PIDT-T8BT:Y6 NPs is mainly driven by Y6, allowing a high performance even at a low D:A mass ratio of 1:50. The high performance at the low mass ratio is attributed to the amorphous behavior of PIDT-T8BT. Low ratios are generally thought to yield lower efficiency than the more conventional ≈1:1 ratio. However, the OPVs exhibit peak performance at a D:A ratio of 1:5. Similarly the NPs used for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution show peak performance at the 1:6.7 D:A ratio. Interestingly, for the PIDT-T8BT:Y6 system, as the polymer proportion increases, a reduced photocatalytic and photovoltaic performance is observed. The unconventional D:A ratios provide lower recombination losses and increased charge-carrier lifetime with undisrupted ambipolar charge transport in bulk Y6, enabling better performance than conventional ratios. This work reports novel light-harvesting materials in which performance is reduced due to unfavorable morphology as D:A ratios move toward conventional ratios of 1:1.2-1:1.

Optimizing Electronic Density at Active W Sites for Boosting Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

It is highly desirable but challenging to optimize the electronic structure of an active site to realize moderate active site-Hads bond energies for boosting photocatalytic H2 evolution. Herein, an interfacial engineering strategy is developed to simultaneously concentrate hydrogen species and accelerate the combination of an Hads intermediate to generate free H2 by constructing W-WC-W2C (WCC) cocatalysts. Systematic investigations reveal that hybridizing with W2C creates electron-rich W active sites and effectively induces the downshift of the d-band center of W in WC. Consequently, the strong W-Hads bonds on the surface of WC are weakened, thus promoting the desorption of Hads to rapidly produce free H2. The optimized 40-WCC/CdS photocatalyst exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 63.6 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible light (≥420 nm) with an apparent quantum efficiency of 39.5% at 425 nm monochromatic light, which is about 40-fold of the pristine CdS. This work offers insights into the design of cocatalyst for high-efficiency photocatalytic H2 production.

Organic Donor-Acceptor Systems for Photocatalysis

Organic semiconductor materials are considered to be promising photocatalysts due to their excellent light absorption by chromophores, easy molecular structure tuning, and solution-processable properties. In particular, donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic photocatalytic materials synthesized by introducing D and A units intra- or intermolecularly, have made great progress in photocatalytic studies. More and more studies have demonstrated that the D-A type organic photocatalytic materials combine effective carrier separation, tunable bandgap, and sensitive optoelectronic response, and are considered to be an effective strategy for enhancing light absorption, improving exciton dissociation, and optimizing carrier transport. This review provides a thorough overview of D-A strategies aimed at optimizing the photocatalytic performance of organic semiconductors. Initially, essential methods for modifying organic photocatalytic materials, such as interface engineering, crystal engineering, and interaction modulation, are briefly discussed. Subsequently, the review delves into various organic photocatalytic materials based on intramolecular and intermolecular D-A interactions, encompassing small molecules, conjugated polymers, crystalline polymers, supramolecules, and organic heterojunctions. Meanwhile, the energy band structures, exciton dynamics, and redox-active sites of D-A type organic photocatalytic materials under different bonding modes are discussed. Finally, the review highlights the advanced applications of organic photocatalystsand outlines prospective challenges and opportunities.

Organic Photovoltaic Materials for Solar Fuel Applications: A Perfect Match?

This work discusses the use of donor and acceptor materials from organic photovoltaics in solar fuel applications. These two routes to solar energy conversion have many shared materials design parameters, and in recent years there has been increasing overlap of the molecules and polymers used in each. Here, we examine whether this is a good approach, where knowledge can be translated, and where further consideration to molecular design is required.

Recent developments, advances and strategies in heterogeneous photocatalysts for water splitting

Photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is an up-and-coming technology for generating sustainable fuel using light energy. Significant progress has been made in the developing of PWS innovations over recent years. In addition to various water-splitting (WS) systems, the focus has primarily been on one- and two-steps-excitation WS systems. These systems utilize singular or composite photocatalysts for WS, which is a simple, feasible, and cost-effective method for efficiently converting prevalent green energy into sustainable H2 energy on a large commercial scale. The proposed principle of charge confinement and transformation should be implemented dynamically by conjugating and stimulating the photocatalytic process while ensuring no unintentional connection at the interface. This study focuses on overall water splitting (OWS) using one/two-steps excitation and various techniques. It also discusses the current advancements in the development of new light-absorbing materials and provides perspectives and approaches for isolating photoinduced charges. This article explores multiple aspects of advancement, encompassing both chemical and physical changes, environmental factors, different photocatalyst types, and distinct parameters affecting PWS. Significant factors for achieving an efficient photocatalytic process under detrimental conditions, (e.g., strong light absorption, and synthesis of structures with a nanometer scale. Future research will focus on developing novel materials, investigating potential synthesis techniques, and improving existing high-energy raw materials. The endeavors aim is to enhance the efficiency of energy conversion, the absorption of radiation, and the coherence of physiochemical processes.

Modeling photo-generated charge extraction in bulk heterojunction nanoparticles

We present a drift-diffusion model for predicting currents generated through the absorption of solar energy inside bulk heterojunction organic nanoparticles, which are, for example, promising nanomaterials for photo-catalytic water splitting. By coupling a model of the internal microstructure of the nanoparticle with the electronic properties, we show how different characteristics of the microstructure influence the efficiency of the conversion of solar energy into electrical energy. Our model provides a foundation for using computational modeling to optimize the design of photocatalytic nanoparticles.

Control of Properties through Hydrogen Bonding Interactions in Conjugated Polymers

Molecular design is crucial for endowing conjugated polymers (CPs) with unique properties and enhanced electronic performance. Introducing Hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) into CPs has been a broadly exploited, yet still emerging strategy capable of tuning a range of properties encompassing solubility, crystallinity, electronic properties, solid-state morphology, and stability, as well as mechanical properties and self-healing properties. Different H-bonding groups can be utilized to tailor CPs properties based on the applications of interest. This review provides an overview of classes of H-bonding CPs (assorted by the different H-bond functional groups), the synthetic methods to introduce the corresponding H-bond functional groups and the impact of H-bonding in CPs on corresponding electronic and materials properties. Recent advances in addressing the trade-off between electronic performance and mechanical durability are also highlighted. Furthermore, insights into future directions and prospects for H-bonded CPs are discussed.

Insights into the performance of binary heterojunction photocatalysts for degradation of refractory pollutants

The uncontrolled discharge of industry- and consumer-derived micropollutants and synthetic contaminants into freshwater bodies represents a severe threat to human health and aquatic ecosystem. Inexpensive and highly efficient wastewater treatment methods are, therefore, urgently required to eliminate such non-biodegradable, recalcitrant, and toxic organic pollutants. In this context, advanced oxidation processes, particularly heterogenous photocatalysis, have received enormous attention over the past few decades. Among the different classes of photocatalysts explored by the scientific community, heterojunction photocatalysts, in general, and binary heterojunction photocatalysts, in particular, have shown tremendous promise, attributed to their many distinct advantages. As such, the present review highlights the application of diverse array of binary heterojunction photocatalysts for eliminating water-borne contaminants. Specifically, a bibliometric analysis has been conducted to identify the ongoing research trend and future prospects of heterojunction photocatalysts. It appears that metal oxide/metal oxide-based heterojunctions have superior thermal and mechanical stability compared to other heterojunction photocatalysts. In contrast, metal oxide/non-metal semiconductor-based heterojunctions are extremely effective in pollutant degradation without significant leaching of metal ions. The review concludes by proposing novel strategic research guidelines in order to make further advances in this rapidly evolving cross-disciplinary field of topical interest.

Efficient Charge Separation and Transport in Fullerene-CuPcOC8 Donor-Acceptor Nanorod Enhancing Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Photocatalytic hydrogen generation via water decomposition is a promising avenue in the pursuit of large-scale, cost-effective renewable hydrogen energy generation. However, the design of an efficient photocatalyst plays a crucial role in achieving high yields in hydrogen generation. Herein, we have engineered a fullerene-2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octa(octyloxy)copper phthalocyanine (C60-CuPcOC8) photocatalyst, achieving both efficient hydrogen generation and high stability. The significant donor-acceptor (D-A) interactions facilitate the efficient electron transfer from CuPcOC8 to C60. The rate of photocatalytic hydrogen generation for C60-CuPcOC8 is 8.32 mmol·g-1·h-1, which is two orders of magnitude higher than the individual C60 and CuPcOC8. The remarkable increase in hydrogen generation activity can be attributed to the development of a robust internal electric field within the C60-CuPcOC8 assembly. It is 16.68 times higher than that of the pure CuPcOC8. The strong internal electric field facilitates the rapid separation within 0.6 ps, enabling photogenerated charge transfer efficiently. Notably, the hydrogen generation efficiency of C60-CuPcOC8 remains above 95%, even after 10 h, showing its exceptional photocatalytic stability. This study provides critical insight into advancing the field of photocatalysis.

Overcoming small-bandgap charge recombination in visible and NIR-light-driven hydrogen evolution by engineering the polymer photocatalyst structure

Designing an organic polymer photocatalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution with visible and near-infrared (NIR) light activity is still a major challenge. Unlike the common behavior of gradually increasing the charge recombination while shrinking the bandgap, we present here a series of polymer nanoparticles (Pdots) based on ITIC and BTIC units with different π-linkers between the acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) repeated moieties of the polymer. These polymers act as an efficient single polymer photocatalyst for H2 evolution under both visible and NIR light, without combining or hybridizing with other materials. Importantly, the difluorothiophene (ThF) π-linker facilitates the charge transfer between acceptors of different repeated moieties (A-D-A-(π-Linker)-A-D-A), leading to the enhancement of charge separation between D and A. As a result, the PITIC-ThF Pdots exhibit superior hydrogen evolution rates of 279 µmol/h and 20.5 µmol/h with visible (>420 nm) and NIR (>780 nm) light irradiation, respectively. Furthermore, PITIC-ThF Pdots exhibit a promising apparent quantum yield (AQY) at 700 nm (4.76%).

Interfacial electric field construction of hollow PdS QDs/Zn1-xCdxS solid solution with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The regulation of hollow morphology, band structure modulation of solid solution, and introduction of cocatalysts greatly promote the separation of electron-hole pairs in photocatalytic processes, which is of great significance for the process of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). In this study, we constructed Zn1-xCdxS hollow solid solution photocatalysts using template and ion exchange methods, and successfully loaded PdS quantum dots (PdS QDs) onto the solid solution through in situ sulfidation. Significantly, the 0.5 wt% PdS QDs/Zn0.6Cd0.4S composite material achieved a H2 production rate of 27.63 mmol g-1 h-1 in the PHE process. The hollow structure of the composite material enhances processes such as light reflection and scattering, the band structure modulation of the solid solution enables the electron-hole pairs to reach an optimal exciton recombination balance, and the modification of PdS QDs provides abundant sites for oxidation, thereby promoting the proton reduction and hydrogen evolution rate. This work provides valuable guidance for the rational design of efficient composite PHE catalysts with strong internal electric field.

Tunable Band Engineering Management on Perovskite MAPbBr3 /COFs Nano-Heterostructures for Efficient S-S Coupling Reactions

Efficient artificial photosynthesis of disulfide bonds holds promises to facilitate reverse decoding of genetic codes and deciphering the secrets of protein multilevel folding, as well as the development of life science and advanced functional materials. However, the incumbent synthesis strategies encounter separation challenges arising from leaving groups in the ─S─S─ coupling reaction. In this study, according to the reaction mechanism of free-radical-triggered ─S─S─ coupling, light-driven heterojunction functional photocatalysts are tailored and constructed, enabling them to efficiently generate free radicals and trigger the coupling reaction. Specifically, perovskites and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are screened out as target materials due to their superior light-harvesting and photoelectronic properties, as well as flexible and tunable band structure. The in situ assembled Z-scheme heterojunction MAPB-M-COF (MAPbBr3 = MAPB, MA+ = CH3 NH2 + ) demonstrates a perfect trade-off between quantum efficiency and redox chemical potential via band engineering management. The MAPB-M-COF achieves a 100% ─S─S─ coupling yield with a record photoquantum efficiency of 11.50% and outstanding cycling stability, rivaling all the incumbent similar reaction systems. It highlights the effectiveness and superiority of application-oriented band engineering management in designing efficient multifunctional photocatalysts. This study demonstrates a concept-to-proof research methodology for the development of various integrated heterojunction semiconductors for light-driven chemical reaction and energy conversion.

A comprehensive review on the boosted effects of anion vacancy in the heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation, part I: Focus on sulfur, nitrogen, carbon, and halogen vacancies

The greenest environmental remediation way is the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, limited photocatalytic applications are due to poor sunlight absorption and photogenerated charge carriers' recombination. These limitations can be overcome by introducing anion vacancy (AV) (O, S, N, C, and Halogen) defects in semiconductors that enhance light harvesting, facilitate charge separation, modulate electronic structure, and produce reactive radicals. In continuing part A of this review, in this part, we summarized the recent AVs' research, including S, N, C, and halogen vacancies on the boosted photocatalytic features of semiconductor materials, like metal oxides/sulfides, oxyhalides, and nitrides in detail. Also, we outline the recently developed AV designs for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The AV creating and analysis methods and the recent photocatalytic applications and mechanisms of AV-mediated photocatalysts are reviewed. AV engineering photocatalysts' challenges and development prospects are illustrated to get a promising research direction.

Ground-state electron transfer in all-polymer donor:acceptor blends enables aqueous processing of water-insoluble conjugated polymers

Water-based conductive inks are vital for the sustainable manufacturing and widespread adoption of organic electronic devices. Traditional methods to produce waterborne conductive polymers involve modifying their backbone with hydrophilic side chains or using surfactants to form and stabilize aqueous nanoparticle dispersions. However, these chemical approaches are not always feasible and can lead to poor material/device performance. Here, we demonstrate that ground-state electron transfer (GSET) between donor and acceptor polymers allows the processing of water-insoluble polymers from water. This approach enables macromolecular charge-transfer salts with 10,000× higher electrical conductivities than pristine polymers, low work function, and excellent thermal/solvent stability. These waterborne conductive films have technological implications for realizing high-performance organic solar cells, with efficiency and stability superior to conventional metal oxide electron transport layers, and organic electrochemical neurons with biorealistic firing frequency. Our findings demonstrate that GSET offers a promising avenue to develop water-based conductive inks for various applications in organic electronics.

Metal-Free Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction to CH4 and H2 O2 under Non-sacrificial Ambient Conditions

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 requires photosensitizers and sacrificial agents to provide sufficient electrons and protons through metal-based photocatalysts, and the separation of CH4 from by-product O2 has poor applications. Herein, we successfully synthesize a metal-free photocatalyst of a novel electron-acceptor 4,5,9,10-pyrenetetrone (PT), to our best knowledge, this is the first time that metal-free catalyst achieves non-sacrificial photocatalytic CO2 to CH4 and easily separable H2 O2 . This photocatalyst offers CH4 product of 10.6 μmol ⋅ g-1  ⋅ h-1 under non-sacrificial ambient conditions (room temperature, and only water), which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the reported metal-free photocatalysts. Comprehensive in situ characterizations and calculations reveal a multi-step reaction mechanism, in which the long-lived oxygen-centered radical in the excited PT provides as a site for CO2 activation, resulting in a stabilized cyclic carbonate intermediate with a lower formation energy. This key intermediate is thermodynamically crucial for the subsequent reduction to CH4 product with the electronic selectivity of up to 90 %. The work provides fresh insights on the economic viability of photocatalytic CO2 reduction to easily separable CH4 in non-sacrificial and metal-free conditions.

Potential window alignment regulating ion transfer in faradaic junctions for efficient photoelectrocatalysis

In the past decades, a band alignment theory has become a basis for designing different high-performance semiconductor devices, such as photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, photoelectrostorage and third-generation photovoltaics. Recently, a faradaic junction model (coupled electron and ion transfer) has been proposed to explain charge transfer phenomena in these semiconductor heterojunctions. However, the classic band alignment theory cannot explain coupled electron and ion transfer processes because it only regulates electron transfer. Therefore, it is very significant to explore a suitable design concept for regulating coupled electron and ion transfer in order to improve the performance of semiconductor heterojunctions. Herein, we propose a potential window alignment theory for regulating ion transfer and remarkably improving the photoelectrocatalytic performance of a MoS2/Cd-Cu2ZnSnS4 heterojunction photocathode. Moreover, we find that a faradaic potential window, rather than the band position of the intermediate layer, is a criterion for identifying interface charge transfer direction. This finding can offer different perspectives for designing high-performance semiconductor heterojunctions with suitable potential windows for solar energy conversion and storage.

Machine Learning Accelerated Exploration of Ternary Organic Heterojunction Photocatalysts for Sacrificial Hydrogen Evolution

Donor-acceptor heterojunctions in organic photocatalysts can provide enhanced exciton dissociation and charge separation, thereby improving the photocatalytic activity. However, the wide choice of possible donors and acceptors poses a challenge for the rational design of organic heterojunction photocatalysts, particularly for large ternary phase spaces. We accelerated the exploration of ternary organic heterojunction photocatalysts (TOHP) by using a combination of machine learning and high-throughput experimental screening. This involved 736 experiments in all, out of possible 4320 ternary combinations. The top ten most active TOHPs discovered using this strategy showed outstanding sacrificial hydrogen production rates of more than 500 mmol g-1 h-1, with the most active ternary material reaching a rate of 749.8 mmol g-1 h-1 under 1 sun illumination. These rates of photocatalytic hydrogen generation are among the highest reported for organic photocatalysts in the literature.

Atomically Dispersed Cobalt/Copper Dual-Metal Catalysts for Synergistically Boosting Hydrogen Generation from Formic Acid

The development of practical materials for (de)hydrogenation reactions is a prerequisite for the launch of a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, we present the design and construction of an atomically dispersed dual-metal site Co/Cu-N-C catalyst allowing significantly improved dehydrogenation of formic acid, which is available from carbon dioxide and green hydrogen. The active catalyst centers consist of specific CoCuN6 moieties with double-N-bridged adjacent metal-N4 clusters decorated on a nitrogen-doped carbon support. At optimal conditions the dehydrogenation performance of the nanostructured material (mass activity 77.7 L ⋅ gmetal -1  ⋅ h-1 ) is up to 40 times higher compared to commercial 5 % Pd/C. In situ spectroscopic and kinetic isotope effect experiments indicate that Co/Cu-N-C promoted formic acid dehydrogenation follows the so-called formate pathway with the C-H dissociation of HCOO* as the rate-determining step. Theoretical calculations reveal that Cu in the CoCuN6 moiety synergistically contributes to the adsorption of intermediate HCOO* and raises the d-band center of Co to favor HCOO* activation and thereby lower the reaction energy barrier.

Electron Tunneling Fosters Solar-to-Hydrogen Energy Conversion

Transition-metal chalcogenide quantum dots (TMCs QDs) exhibit emerging potential in the field of solar energy conversion due to large absorption coefficients for light harvesting, quantum size effect, and abundant active sites. However, fine-tuning the photoinduced charge carrier over TMCs QDs to manipulate the directional charge-transfer pathway remains challenging, considering their ultrashort charge lifetime and slow charge-transfer kinetics. To this end, herein, MoSx/PDDA/TMCs QDs heterostructures were exquisitely designed by a simple and green electrostatic self-assembly strategy under ambient conditions, wherein tailor-made negatively charged TMCs QDs stabilized by mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) were precisely self-assembled on the positively charged polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride (PDDA)-modified MoSx nanoflowers (NFs), forming a well-defined three-dimensional heterostructured nanoarchitecture. As an electron trapping agent, an MoSx NFs cocatalyst benefits the unidirectional electron transfer from TMCs QDs to the ideal active centers on the MoSx NFs surface by tunneling the ultrathin insulating polymer interim layer, thereby boosting the charge separation efficiency and endowing self-assembled MoSx/PDDA/TMCs QDs heterostructures with considerably increased photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (1.96 mmol·g-1·h-1) and admirable stability under visible light irradiation. Our work will provide new insights into smart regulation of directional charge transfer over TMCs QDs-based photosystems for solar energy conversion.

Tailored Energy Funneling in Photocatalytic π-Conjugated Polymer Nanofibers for High-Performance Hydrogen Production

The creation of artificial high-performance photosynthetic assemblies with a tailorable antenna system to deliver absorbed solar energy to a photosynthetic reaction center, thereby mimicking biological photosynthesis, remains a major challenge. We report the construction of recyclable, high-performance photosynthetic nanofibers with a crystalline π-conjugated polyfluorene core as an antenna system that funnels absorbed solar energy to spatially defined sensitized Co(II) porphyrin photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Highly effective energy funneling was achieved by tuning the dimensions of the nanofibers to exploit the very long exciton diffusion lengths (>200 nm) associated with the highly crystalline polyfluorene core formed using the living crystallization-driven self-assembly seeded growth method. This enabled efficient solar light-driven hydrogen production from water with a turnover number of over 450 for 8 h of irradiation, an H2 production rate of ca. 65 mmol h-1 g-1, and an overall quantum yield of 0.4% in the wavelength region (<405 nm) beyond the absorption of the molecular photocatalyst. The strategy of using a tailored antenna system based on π-conjugated polymers and maximizing exciton transport to a reaction center reported in this work opens up future opportunities for potential applications in other fields such as solar overall water splitting, CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic small molecule synthesis.

Flux-Assisted Synthesis of Y2 Ti2 O5 S2 for Photocatalytic Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Photocatalytic water splitting is an ideal means of producing hydrogen in a sustainable manner, and developing highly efficient photocatalysts is a vital aspect of realizing this process. The photocatalyst Y2 Ti2 O5 S2 (YTOS) is capable of absorbing at wavelengths up to 650 nm and exhibits outstanding thermal and chemical durability compared with other oxysulfides. However, the photocatalytic performance of YTOS synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction (SSR) process is limited owing to the large particle sizes and structural defects associated with this synthetic method. Herein, we report the synthesis of YTOS particles by a flux-assisted technique. The enhanced mass transfer efficiency in the flux significantly reduced the preparation time compared with the SSR method. In addition, the resulting YTOS showed improved photocatalytic H2 and O2 evolution activity when loaded with Rh and Co3 O4 co-catalysts, respectively. These improvements are attributed to the reduced particle size and enhanced crystallinity of the material as well as the slower decay of photogenerated carriers on a nanosecond to sub-microsecond time range. Further optimization of this flux-assisted method together with suitable surface modification is expected to produce high-quality YTOS crystals with superior photocatalytic activity.

Sulfide Oxidation on Ladder-Type Heteroarenes to Construct All-Acceptor Copolymers for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have recently gained increasing attention as photocatalysts for sunlight-driven hydrogen evolution. However, they suffer from insufficient electron output sites and poor solubility in organic solvents, severely limiting their photocatalytic performance and applicability. Herein, solution-processable all-acceptor (A1 -A2 )-type CPs based on sulfide-oxidized ladder-type heteroarene are synthesized. A1 -A2 -type CPs showed upsurging efficiency improvements by two to three orders of magnitude, compared to their donor-acceptor -type CP counterparts. Furthermore, by seawater splitting, PBDTTTSOS exhibited an apparent quantum yield of 18.9% to 14.8% at 500 to 550 nm. More importantly, PBDTTTSOS achieved an excellent hydrogen evolution rate of 35.7 mmol h-1  g-1 and 150.7 mmol h-1  m-2 in the thin-film state, which is among the highest efficiencies in thin film polymer photocatalysts to date. This work provides a novel strategy for designing polymer photocatalysts with high efficiency and broad applicability.

A single n-type semiconducting polymer-based photo-electrochemical transistor

Conjugated polymer films, which can conduct both ionic and electronic charges, are central to building soft electronic sensors and actuators. Despite the possible interplay between light absorption and the mixed conductivity of these materials in aqueous biological media, no single polymer film has been utilized to create a solar-switchable organic bioelectronic circuit that relies on a fully reversible and redox reaction-free potentiometric photodetection and current modulation. Here we demonstrate that the absorption of light by an electron and cation-transporting polymer film reversibly modulates its electrochemical potential and conductivity in an aqueous electrolyte, which is harnessed to design an n-type photo-electrochemical transistor (n-OPECT). By controlling the intensity of light incident on the n-type polymeric gate electrode, we generate transistor output characteristics that mimic the modulation of the polymeric channel current achieved through gate voltage control. The micron-scale n-OPECT exhibits a high signal-to-noise ratio and an excellent sensitivity to low light intensities. We demonstrate three direct applications of the n-OPECT, i.e., a photoplethysmogram recorder, a light-controlled inverter circuit, and a light-gated artificial synapse, underscoring the suitability of this platform for a myriad of biomedical applications that involve light intensity changes.

Novel Application of NIR-I-Absorbing Quinoidal Conjugated Polymer as a Photothermal Therapeutic Agent

Conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CP NPs) that could absorb the first near-infrared (NIR-I) window have emerged as highly desirable therapeutic nanomaterials. Here, a quinoidal-conjugated polymer (QCP), termed PQ, was developed as a novel class of therapeutic agents for photothermal therapy (PTT). Owing to its intrinsic quinoid structure, PQ exhibits molecular planarity and π-electron overlap along the conjugated backbone, endowing it with a narrow band gap, NIR-I absorption, and diradical features. The obtained PQ was coated with a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) moiety, affording nanosized and water-dispersed PQ nanoparticles (PQ NPs), which consequently show a high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of 63.2%, good photostability, and apparent therapeutic efficacy for both in vitro and in vivo PTTs under an 808 nm laser irradiation. This study demonstrates that QCPs are promising active agents for noninvasive anticancer therapy using NIR-I light.

Highly-Active Chiral Organic Photovoltaic Catalysts with Suppressed Charge Recombination

Recombination of free charges in organic semiconductors reduces the available photo-induced charge-carriers and restricts photovoltaic efficiency. In this work, the chiral organic semiconductors (Y6-R and Y6-S with enantiopure R- and S- chiral alkyl sidechains) are designed and synthesized, which show effective aggregation-induced chirality through mainchain packing with chiral conformations in non-centrosymmetric space groups with tilt chirality. Based on the analysis of spin-injection, magnetic-hysteresis loop, and thermodynamics and dynamics of the excited state, we suggest that the aggregation-induced chirality can generate spin-polarization, which suppresses charge recombination and offers more available charge-carriers within Y6-R and Y6-S relative to the achiral counterpart (Y6). Then the chiral Y6-R and Y6-S show enhanced catalytic activity with optimal average hydrogen evolution rates of 205 and 217 mmol h-1  g-1 , respectively, 60-70 % higher than Y6, when they are employed as nanoparticle photocatalysts in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated solar light, AM1.5G, 100 mW cm-2 .

Constructing Spatially Separated Cage-Like Z-scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst for Enhancing Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Heterojunctions coupled into micro-mesoscopic structures is an attractive strategy to optimize the light harvesting and carrier separation of semiconductor photocatalysts. A self-templating method of ion exchange is reported to synthesize an exquisite hollow cage-structured Ag₂ S@CdS/ZnS that direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst. On the ultrathin shell of the cage, Ag₂ S, CdS, and ZnS with Zn-vacancies (V_Zn ) are arranged sequentially from outside to inside. Among them, the photogenerated electrons are excited by ZnS to the V_Zn energy level and then recombine with the photogenerated holes that are generated by CdS, while the electrons remained in the CdS conduction band are further transferred to Ag₂ S. The ingenious cooperation of the Z-scheme heterojunction with the hollow structure optimizes the photogenerated charges transport channel, spatially separated the oxidation and reduction half-reactions, decreases the charge recombination probability, and simultaneously improves the light harvesting efficiency. As a result, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of the optimal sample is 136.6 and 17.3 times higher than that of cage-like ZnS with V_Zn and CdS by, respectively. This unique strategy demonstrates the tremendous potential of the incorporation of heterojunction construction to morphology design of photocatalytic materials, and also provided a reasonable route for designing other efficient synergistic photocatalytic reactions.

Computation-based regulation of excitonic effects in donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks for enhanced photocatalysis

The strong excitonic effects widely exist in polymer-semiconductors and the large exciton binding energy (E_b) seriously limits their photocatalysis. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are conducted to assess band alignment and charge transfer feature of potential donor-acceptor (D-A) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), using 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)triazine (TAPT) or 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) as acceptors and tereph-thaldehydes functionalized diverse groups as donors. Given the discernable D-A interaction strengths in the D-A pairs, their E_b can be systematically regulated with minimum E_b in TAPT-OMe. Guided by these results, the corresponding D-A COFs are synthesized, where TAPT-OMe-COF possesses the best activity in photocatalytic H₂ production and the activity trend of other COFs is associated with that of calculated E_b for the D-A pairs. In addition, further alkyne cycloaddition for the imine linkage in the COFs greatly improves the stability and the resulting TAPT-OMe-alkyne-COF with a substantially smaller E_b exhibits ~20 times higher activity than the parent COF.

Viologen-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks toward Metal-Free Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise in the field of photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. Many studies have been carried out using various electroactive and photoactive moieties such as triazine, imide, and porphyrin to produce COFs with different geometric structures and units. Electron transfer mediators like viologen and their derivatives can accelerate the transfer of electrons from photosensitizers to active sites. Herein, the combination of a biphenyl-bridged dicarbazole electroactive donor skeleton with a viologen acceptor structure is reported for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of novel COF structures with various alkyl linkers {TPCBP X-COF [X = ethyl (E), butyl (B), and hexyl (H)]}. The structures became more flexible and exhibited less crystal behavior as the length of the alkyl chain increased according to scanning and transmission electron microscopy images, X-ray diffraction analyses, and theoretical three-dimensional geometric optimization. In comparison, the H₂ evolution rate of the TPCBP B-COF (12.276 mmol g^-1) is 2.15 and 2.38 times higher than those of the TPCBP H-COF (5.697 mmol h^-1) and TPCBP E-COF (5.165 mmol h^-1), respectively, under visible light illumination for 8 h. The TPCBP B-COF structure is one of the best-performing catalysts for the corresponding photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in the literature, producing 1.029 mmol g^-1 h^-1 with a high apparent quantum efficiency of 79.69% at 470 nm. Our strategy provides new aspects for the design of novel COFs with respect to future metal-free hydrogen evolution by using solar energy conversion.
