Effects of interlayer confinement and hydration on capacitive charge storage in birnessite

Mechanisms of manganese-tolerant Bacillus brevis MM2 mediated oxytetracycline biodegradation process

Addressing the environmental threat of oxytetracycline (OTC) contamination, this study harnesses the bioremediation capabilities of Bacillus brevis MM2, a manganese-oxidizing bacterium from acid mine drainage. We demonstrate the strain's exceptional efficiency in degrading OTC under high manganese conditions, with complete removal achieved within 24 h. The degradation is facilitated by the production of Bio-MnOx, utilizing their high redox potential and large specific surface area, which significantly enhance the adsorption and oxidation of OTC. Advanced characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, High Resolution-Transmission Electronic Microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, provide a detailed analysis of the structural and functional properties of Bio-MnOx. The study also reveals the crucial role of Mn(III) intermediates and reactive oxygen species in the OTC degradation process, with quenching experiments validating their substantial impact on efficiency. Laccase activity, a key manganese-oxidizing enzyme, is assessed spectrophotometrically, further highlighting the enzymatic contribution to Mn(II) oxidation and OTC breakdown. This research contributes valuable insights and approaches for the targeted bioremediation of OTC-contaminated aquatic environments, offering a promising strategy for combating pollution from antibiotics and analogous compounds.

Confining Conversion Chemistry in Intercalation Host for Aqueous Batteries

Conversion-type anode materials with high theoretical capacities play a pivotal role in developing future aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs). However, their sustainable applications have long been impeded by the poor cycling stability and sluggish redox kinetics. Here we show that confining conversion chemistry in intercalation host could overcome the above challenges. Using sodium titanates as a model intercalation host, an integrated layered anode material of iron oxide hydroxide-pillared titanate (FeNTO) is demonstrated. The conversion reaction is spatially and kinetically confined within sub-nano interlayer, enabling superlow redox polarization (ca. 4-6 times reduced), ultralong lifespan (up to 8700 cycles) and excellent rate performance. Notably, the charge compensation of interlayer via universal cation intercalation into host endows FeNTO with the capability of operating well in a broad range of aqueous electrolytes (Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, etc.). We further demonstrate the large-scale synthesis of FeNTO thin film and powder, and rational design of quasi-solid-state high-voltage ARB pouch cells powering wearable electronics against extreme mechanical abuse. This work demonstrates a powerful confinement means to access disruptive electrode materials for next-generation energy devices.

Enhancement of high-efficiency potassium ion hybrid supercapacitors utilizing oxygen-deficient Co2NiO4@nitrogen-doped carbon nanoflower

Transition metal oxides represent a promising category of pseudocapacitive materials for potassium-ion hybrid supercapacitors (PIHCs) characterized by high energy density. Nevertheless, their utility is hindered by intrinsic low conductivity, restricted electrochemical sites, and notable volume expansion, all of which directly contribute to the degradation of their electrochemical performance, thereby limiting their practical applicability in supercapacitor systems. In this study, we present a facile synthesis approach to fabricate nitrogen-doped carbon-supported oxygen vacancy-rich Co2NiO4 nanoflowers (Ov-Co2NiO4/NC NFs) featuring tunable surface layering and electron distribution. The nanoflower structure augments the contact area between the material and the electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal oxygen vacancies could bring an enhanced charge density across the entire Fermi level in Co2NiO4 and expand the interatomic distances between adjacent cobalt and nickel atoms to 3.370 Å. N-doped carbon carriers further accelerate charge transfer, increase the electrostatic energy storage and inhibit the structural collapse of Co2NiO4. These structural modifications serve to improve electrochemical reaction kinetics, augment the binding energy of K+ (-2.87 eV), and mitigate structural variations during K+ storage. In a 6 M KOH electrolyte, Ov-Co2NiO4/NC NF exhibits a specific capacitance of 1104 F g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1, with a remarkable capacitance retention rate of 91.48 % after 6500 cycles. Furthermore, the assembled PIHCs demonstrate an energy density of 47.8 Wh kg-1 and an ultra-high power density of 376 W kg-1, alongside notable cycle stability, retaining 90.13 % of its capacitance after 8000 cycles in a 6 M KOH electrolyte.

Renewable biomass reinvigorates sustainable water-energy nexus

The water-energy nexus has garnered worldwide interest. Current dual-functional research aimed at co-producing freshwater and electricity faces significant challenges, including sub-optimal capacities ("1 + 1 < 2"), poor inter-functional coordination, high carbon footprints, and large costs. Mainstream water-to-electricity conversions are often compromised owing to functionality separation and erratic gradients. Herein, we present a sustainable strategy based on renewable biomass that addresses these issues by jointly achieving competitive solar-evaporative desalination and robust clean electricity generation. Using hydrothermally activated basswood, our solar desalination exceeded the 100% efficiency bottleneck even under reduced solar illumination. Through simple size-tuning, we achieved a high evaporation rate of 3.56 kg h-1 m-2 and an efficiency of 149.1%, representing 128%-251% of recent values without sophisticated surface engineering. By incorporating an electron-ion nexus with interfacial Faradaic electron circulation and co-ion-predominated micro-tunnel hydrodynamic flow, we leveraged free energy from evaporation to generate long-term electricity (0.38 W m-3 for over 14d), approximately 322% of peer performance levels. This inter-functional nexus strengthened dual functionalities and validated general engineering practices. Our presented strategy holds significant promise for global human-society-environment sustainability.

Deconvoluting Surface and Bulk Charge Storage Processes in Redox-Active Oxides by Integrating Electrochemical and Optical Insights

Redox-active transition metal oxides (TMOs) play crucial roles in diverse energy storage and conversion technologies, such as batteries and pseudocapacitors. These materials show intricate electrochemical charge storage processes, encompassing both bulk ion-intercalation, typical of battery electrodes, and pseudocapacitive-like behavior localized near the surfaces. However, understanding the underlying mechanisms of charge storage in redox-active TMOs is challenging due to the coexistence of these behaviors. In this study, we propose an integrated approach that combines operando electrochemical and optical techniques to disentangle the contributions of bulk and surface phenomena. Using birnessite δ-MnO2-x as a model system, we account for surface pseudocapacitive-like layers and employ a refined model that incorporates both surface reactions and bulk chemical diffusion. This methodology allows us to extract essential kinetic parameters, establishing a fundamental framework for unraveling surface and bulk electrochemical processes. This advancement provides a valuable tool for the rational design of energy storage devices, enhancing our ability to tailor these materials for specific applications.

Suppressing Jahn-Teller distortion and locking lattice water with doped Fe(III) in birnessite toward fast and stable zinc-ion batteries

Birnessite has been regarded as a promising cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), but severe Jahn-Teller distortion and abrupt lattice collapse at deep charged states lead to serious problems such as poor capacity retention and short cycle life, which severely impede its practical applications. We herein report the construction of an advanced layered Fe-doped Na0.55Mn2O4·xH2O (Fe-NMO·xH2O) cathode to promote zinc-ion storage performance and electrochemical stability. An outstanding capacity of 102 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 20 A g-1 and a long cycle life of 6000 cycles have been achieved, comparable to the state-of-the-art manganese oxide-based cathodes. Both experimental measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that Fe3+ substitution and lattice water cooperatively stabilize the interlayer structure, accelerate zinc-ion diffusion, and improve electronic conductivity. Notably, Fe doping is conducive to alleviating the Jahn-Teller effect and locking lattice water, which effectively prevents phase transformation and lattice collapse during the (de)intercalation process. This work sheds light on the synergistic interplay between dopants and structural water in zinc-ion storage and demonstrates instructive strategies to regulate layered structures for ZIBs.

Thermodynamically spontaneously intercalated H3O+ enables LiMn2O4 with enhanced proton tolerance in aqueous batteries

LiMn2O4 (LMO) is an attractive positive electrode material for aqueous lithium-ion batteries (ALIBs), but its inferior cycle performance limits the practical application. The degradation mechanism of LMO in ALIBs is still unclear, resulting in inability to predictably improve its structural stability. The electrode/electrolyte interface is believed to play an important role in electrode degradation. However, the interactions of the water-containing electrode/electrolyte interface of LMO are underexplored. In this work, we demonstrate the insertion of H3O+ into LMO during cycling in aqueous electrolyte and elucidate the paradoxical effects of H3O+. The crystal H3O+ enhances the structural stability of LMO by forming a gradient Mn4+-rich protective shell, but an excess amount of crystal H3O+ leads to poor Li+ conductivity, resulting in rapid capacity fading. Combining electrochemical analyses, structural characterizations, and first-principles calculations, we reveal the intercalation of H3O+ into LMO and its associated mechanism on the structural evolution of LMO. Furthermore, we regulate the crystal H3O+ content in LMO by modifying the hydrogen bond networks of aqueous electrolyte to restrict H2O molecule activity. This approach utilizes an appropriate amount of crystal H3O+ to enhance the structural stability of LMO while maintaining sufficient Li+ diffusion.

Manipulating disorder within cathodes of alkali-ion batteries

The fact that ordered materials are rarely perfectly crystalline is widely acknowledged among materials scientists, but its impact is often overlooked or underestimated when studying how structure relates to properties. Various investigations demonstrate that intrinsic and extrinsic defects, and disorder generated by physicochemical reactions, are responsible for unexpectedly detrimental or beneficial functionalities. The task remains to modulate the disorder to produce desired properties in materials. As disorder is often correlated with local interactions, it is controllable. In this Review, we explore the structural disorder in cathode materials as a novel approach for improving their electrochemical performance. We revisit cathode materials for alkali-ion batteries and outline the origins and beneficial consequences of disorder. Focusing on layered, cubic rocksalt and other metal oxides, we discuss how disorder improves electrochemical properties of cathode materials and which interactions generate the disorder. We also present the potential pitfalls of disorder that must be considered. We conclude with perspectives for enhancing the electrochemical performance of cathode materials by using disorder.

Modeling of Nanomaterials for Supercapacitors: Beyond Carbon Electrodes

Capacitive storage devices allow for fast charge and discharge cycles, making them the perfect complements to batteries for high power applications. Many materials display interesting capacitive properties when they are put in contact with ionic solutions despite their very different structures and (surface) reactivity. Among them, nanocarbons are the most important for practical applications, but many nanomaterials have recently emerged, such as conductive metal-organic frameworks, 2D materials, and a wide variety of metal oxides. These heterogeneous and complex electrode materials are difficult to model with conventional approaches. However, the development of computational methods, the incorporation of machine learning techniques, and the increasing power in high performance computing now allow us to tackle these types of systems. In this Review, we summarize the current efforts in this direction. We show that depending on the nature of the materials and of the charging mechanisms, different methods, or combinations of them, can provide desirable atomic-scale insight on the interactions at play. We mainly focus on two important aspects: (i) the study of ion adsorption in complex nanoporous materials, which require the extension of constant potential molecular dynamics to multicomponent systems, and (ii) the characterization of Faradaic processes in pseudocapacitors, that involves the use of electronic structure-based methods. We also discuss how recently developed simulation methods will allow bridges to be made between double-layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors for future high power electricity storage devices.

Nanoarchitectonics of ultrafine molybdenum carbide nanocrystals into three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon framework for capacitive deionization

Molybdenum carbide (MoC) has emerged as a promising material for capacitive deionization (CDI), but the poor electrochemical kinetics in conventional MoC owing to the bulk structure and low electric conductivity limit its CDI performance. To address this challenge, herein, we develop a novel strategy to synthesize ultrafine MoC nanocrystals that are embedded within a three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon framework (NC/MoC). This synthesis method involves the space-confined pyrolysis of molybdate precursors within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this process, molybdates are confined into the MOF crystalline structure, where MOFs provide a confined reactor and carbon source. The resulting NC/MoC with the uniformly distributed MoC nanocrystals provides sufficient active sites for the electrosorption of salt ions, while the MOF-derived NC matrix facilitates charge transfer and provides the space-confined effect for preventing the possible aggregations of MoC nanocrystals during the CDI process. The NC/MoC exhibits an impressive salt adsorption capacity (SAC, 84.2 mg g-1, 1.2 V), rapid desalination rate, and high cycling stability (91.4% SAC retention after 200 cycles), better than those of most previously reported carbon-based CDI materials. Besides, the possible mechanisms are systematically investigated by ex situ characterization and density functional theory calculations. This study opens up new avenues for the construction of metal carbide-based nanocrystals for CDI and other electrochemical applications.

Hydroxide-Derived Nanostructures: Scalable Synthesis, Characterization, Properties, and Potential Applications

Metal oxide nanostructures have received an increasing attention owing to their unique chemical and physical properties along with their widespread applications in various fields. This article provides an overview of the recent discovery - christened Hydroxides-Derived Nanostructures, or HDNs - in which hydroxide aqueous solutions (mostly tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAH) are reacted at temperatures < 100 °C and under atmospheric pressure with various metal-containing precursors to scalably prepare novel metal oxide nanostructures. In one case, a dozen commercial and earth abundant Ti-containing powders such as binary carbides, nitrides, borides, among others, are converted into new, 1D TiO2-based lepidocrocite (1DL) nanofilaments (NFs). Application-wise, the 1DLs show outstanding performance in a number of energy, environmental, and biomedical fields such as photo- and electrocatalysis, water splitting, lithium-sulfur and lithium-ion batteries, water purification, dye degradation, cancer therapy, and polymer composites. In addition to 1DL, the HDNs family encompasses other metal oxides nanostructures including magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and MnO2 birnessite-based crystalline 2D flakes. The latter showed promise in electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications. The developed recipe provides a new vista in the molecular self-assembly synthesis of nanomaterials that can advance the field with a library of novel nanostructures with substantial implications in a multitude of fields.

A Membrane-Free Rechargeable Seawater Battery Unlocked by Lattice Engineering

Seawater batteries that directly utilize natural seawater as electrolytes are ideal sustainable aqueous devices with high safety, exceedingly low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the present seawater batteries are either primary batteries or rechargeable half-seawater/half-nonaqueous batteries because of the lack of suitable anode working in seawater. Here, a unique lattice engineering to unlock the electrochemically inert anatase TiO2 anode to be highly active for the reversible uptake of multiple cations (Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+) in aqueous electrolytes is demonstrated. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the origin of the unprecedented charge storage behaviors, which can be attributed to the significant reduction of the cations diffusion barrier within the lattice, i.e., from 1.5 to 0.4 eV. As a result, the capacities of anatase TiO2 with 2.4% lattice expansion are ≈100 times higher than the routine one in natural seawater, and ≈200 times higher in aqueous Na+ electrolyte. The finding will significantly advance aqueous seawater energy storage devices closer to practical applications.

Hybrid bilayered vanadium oxide electrodes with large and tunable interlayer distances in lithium-ion batteries

The interlayer distances in layered electrode materials, influenced by the chemical composition of the confined interlayer regions, have a significant impact on their electrochemical performance. Chemical preintercalation of inorganic metal ions affects the interlayer spacing, yet expansion is limited by the hydrated ion radii. Herein, we demonstrate that using varying concentrations of decyltrimethylammonium (DTA+) and cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA+) cations in chemical preintercalation synthesis followed by hydrothermal treatment, the interlayer distance of hybrid bilayered vanadium oxides (BVOs) can be tuned between 11.1 Å and 35.6 Å. Our analyses reveal that these variations in interlayer spacing are due to different amounts of structural water and alkylammonium cations confined within the interlayer regions. Increased concentrations of alkylammonium cations not only expand the interlayer spacing but also induce local bending and disordering of the V-O bilayers. Electrochemical cycling of hybrid BVO electrodes in non-aqueous lithium-ion cells show that specific capacities decrease as interlayer regions expand, suggesting that the densely packed alkylammonium cations obstruct intercalation sites and hinder Li+ ion transport. Furthermore, we found that greater layer separation facilitates the dissolution of active material into the electrolyte, resulting in rapid capacity decay during extended cycling. This study emphasizes that layered electrode materials require both spacious interlayer regions as well as high structural and chemical stabilities, providing guidelines for structural engineering of organic-inorganic hybrids.

The dehydration mechanism of Na and K birnessites: a comprehensive multitechnique study

The structural, spectroscopic and electronic properties of Na and K birnessites were investigated from ambient conditions (birA) to complete dehydration, and the involved mechanisms were scrutinized. Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations were employed to derive structural models for lamellar A0.33MnO2·xH2O (A = Na+ or K+, x = 0 or 0.66), subsequently compared with the experimental results obtained for Na0.30MnO2·0.75H2O and K0.22MnO2·0.77H2O materials. Thermal analysis (TGA-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) measurements were conducted for both birnessites. Dehydration under vacuum, annealing, or controlled relative humidity were considered. Results indicated that complete birnessite dehydration was a two-stage process. In the first stage, water removal from the interlayer of fully hydrated birnessite (birA) down to a molar H2O/A ratio of ∼2 (birB) led to the progressive shrinkage of the interlayer distance (3% for Na birnessite, 1% for K birnessite). In the second stage, water-free (birC) domains with a shorter interlayer distance (20% for Na birnessite, 10% for K birnessite) appeared and coexisted with birB domains. Then, birB was essentially transformed into birC when complete dehydration was achieved. The vibrational properties of birA were consistent with strong intermolecular interactions among water molecules, whereas partially dehydrated birnessite (birB) showed a distinct feature, with 3 (for Na-bir) and 2 (for K-bir) vibrations that were reproduced by DFT calculations for organized water into the interlayer (x = 0.66). The study also demonstrated that the electronic structure of Na birnessite depends on the interlayer water content. The external Na+ electronic level (Na 2p) was slightly destabilized (+0.3 eV binding energy) under near ambient conditions (birA) compared to drier conditions (birB and birC).

Heterodyne-Detected Sum-Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy Reveals Aqueous Molecular Structure at the Suspended Graphene/Water Interface

Graphene, a transparent two-dimensional conductive material, has brought extensive new perspectives and prospects to various aqueous technological systems, such as desalination membranes, chemical sensors, energy storage, and energy conversion devices. Yet, the molecular-level details of graphene in contact with aqueous electrolytes, such as water orientation and hydrogen bond structure, remain elusive or controversial. Here, we employ surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) vibrational spectroscopy to re-examine the water molecular structure at a freely suspended graphene/water interface. We compare the response from the air/graphene/water system to that from the air/water interface. Our results indicate that theχ y y z 2 ${{\chi }_{yyz}^{\left(2\right)}}$ spectrum recorded from the air/graphene/water system arises from the topmost 1-2 water layers in contact with the graphene, with the graphene itself not generating a significant SFG response. Compared to the air/water interface response, the presence of monolayer graphene weakly affects the interfacial water. Graphene weakly affects the dangling O-H group, lowering its frequency through its interaction with the graphene sheet, and has a very small effect on the hydrogen-bonded O-H group. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm our experimental observation. Our work provides molecular insight into the interfacial structure at a suspended graphene/water interface, relevant to various technological applications of graphene.

A review on the transformation of birnessite in the environment: Implication for the stabilization of heavy metals

Birnessite is ubiquitous in the natural environment where heavy metals are retained and easily transformed. The surface properties and structure of birnessite change with the changes in external environmental conditions, which also affects the fate of heavy metals. Clarifying the effect and mechanism of the birnessite phase transition process on heavy metals is the key to taking effective measures to prevent and control heavy metal pollution. Therefore, the four transformation pathways of birnessite are summarized first in this review. Second, the relationship between transformation pathways and environmental conditions is proposed. These relevant environmental conditions include abiotic (e.g., co-existing ions, pH, oxygen pressure, temperature, electric field, light, aging, pressure) and biotic factors (e.g., microorganisms, biomolecules). The phase transformation is achieved by the key intermediate of Mn(III) through interlayer-condensation, folding, neutralization-disproportionation, and dissolution-recrystallization mechanisms. The AOS (average oxidation state) of Mn and interlayer spacing are closely correlated with the phase transformation of birnessite. Last but not least, the mechanisms of heavy metals immobilization in the transformation process of birnessite are summed up. They involve isomorphous substitution, redox, complexation, hydration/dehydration, etc. The transformation of birnessite and its implication on heavy metals will be helpful for understanding and predicting the behavior of heavy metals and the crucial phase of manganese oxides/hydroxides in natural and engineered environments.

Understanding Sorption of Aqueous Electrolytes in Porous Carbon by NMR Spectroscopy

Ion adsorption at solid-water interfaces is crucial for many electrochemical processes involving aqueous electrolytes including energy storage, electrochemical separations, and electrocatalysis. However, the impact of the hydronium (H3O+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions on the ion adsorption and surface charge distributions remains poorly understood. Many fundamental studies of supercapacitors focus on non-aqueous electrolytes to avoid addressing the role of functional groups and electrolyte pH in altering ion uptake. Achieving microscopic level characterization of interfacial mixed ion adsorption is particularly challenging due to the complex ion dynamics, disordered structures, and hierarchical porosity of the carbon electrodes. This work addresses these challenges starting with pH measurements to quantify the adsorbed H3O+ concentrations, which reveal the basic nature of the activated carbon YP-50F commonly used in supercapacitors. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is used to study the uptake of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (LiTFSI) aqueous electrolyte in the YP-50F carbon across the full pH range. The NMR data analysis highlights the importance of including the fast ion-exchange processes for accurate quantification of the adsorbed ions. Under acidic conditions, more TFSI- ions are adsorbed in the carbon pores than Li+ ions, with charge compensation also occurring via H3O+ adsorption. Under neutral and basic conditions, when the carbon's surface charge is close to zero, the Li+ and TFSI- ions exhibit similar but lower affinities toward the carbon pores. Our experimental approach and evidence of H3O+ uptake in pores provide a methodology to relate the local structure to the function and performance in a wide range of materials for energy applications and beyond.

Role of Surface Terminations for Charge Storage of Ti3C2Tx MXene Electrodes in Aqueous Acidic Electrolyte

In this study, we used 2-Dimmensionnal Ti3C2 MXene as model materials to understand how the surface groups affect their electrochemical performance. By adjusting the nature of the surface terminations (Cl-, N/O-, and O-) of Ti3C2 MXene through a molten salt approach, we could change the spacing between MXene layers and the level of water confinement, resulting in significant modifications of the electrochemical performance in acidic electrolyte. Using a combination of techniques including in-operando X-ray diffraction and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) techniques, we found that the presence of confined water results in a drastic transition from an almost electrochemically inactive behavior for Cl-terminated Ti3C2 to an ideally fast pseudocapacitive signature for N,O-terminated Ti3C2 MXene. This experimental work not only demonstrates the strong connection between surface terminations and confined water but also reveals the importance of confined water on the charge storage mechanism and the reaction kinetics in MXene.

Cation desolvation-induced capacitance enhancement in reduced graphene oxide (rGO)

Understanding the local electrochemical processes is of key importance for efficient energy storage applications, including electrochemical double layer capacitors. In this work, we studied the charge storage mechanism of a model material - reduced graphene oxide (rGO) - in aqueous electrolyte using the combination of cavity micro-electrode, operando electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and operando electrochemical dilatometry (ECD) tools. We evidence two regions with different charge storage mechanisms, depending on the cation-carbon interaction. Notably, under high cathodic polarization (region II), we report an important capacitance increase in Zn2+ containing electrolyte with minimum volume expansion, which is associated with Zn2+ desolvation resulting from strong electrostatic Zn2+-rGO interactions. These results highlight the significant role of ion-electrode interaction strength and cation desolvation in modulating the charging mechanisms, offering potential pathways for optimized capacitive energy storage. As a broader perspective, understanding confined electrochemical systems and the coupling between chemical, electrochemical and transport processes in confinement may open tremendous opportunities for energy, catalysis or water treatment applications in the future.

Nanocellulose/carbon nanotube/manganese dioxide composite electrodes with high mass loadings for flexible supercapacitors

The increasing commercialization of flexible electronic products has sparked a rising interest in flexible wearable energy storage devices. Supercapacitors are positioned as one of the systems with the most potential due to their distinctive advantages: high power density, rapid charge and discharge rates, and long cycle life. However, electrode materials face challenges in providing excellent mechanical strength while ensuring sufficient energy density. This study presents a method for constructing a flexible composite electrode material with high capacitance and mechanical performance by electrochemically depositing high-quality manganese dioxide (MnO2) onto the surface of a nanocellulose (CNF) and carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive film. In this electrode material, the CNF/CNT composite film serves as a flexible conductive substrate, offering excellent mechanical properties (modulus of 3.3 GPa), conductivity (55 S/cm), and numerous active sites. Furthermore, at the interface between MnO2 and the CNF/CNT substrate, C-O-Mn bonds are formed, promoting a tight connection between the composite materials. The assembled symmetric flexible supercapacitor (FSC) demonstrates impressive performance, with an areal specific capacitance of 934 mF/cm2, an energy density of 43.10 Wh/kg, a power density of 166.67 W/kg and a long cycle life (85 % Capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles), suggesting that they hold promise for FSC applications.

Substrate effect on charging of electrified graphene/water interfaces

Graphene, a transparent two-dimensional (2D) conductive electrode, has brought extensive new perspectives and prospects to electrochemical systems, such as chemical sensors, energy storage, and energy conversion devices. In many of these applications, graphene, supported on a substrate, is in contact with an aqueous solution. An increasing number of studies indicate that the substrate, rather than graphene, determines the organization of water in contact with graphene, i.e., the electric double layer (EDL) structure near the electrified graphene, and the wetting behavior of the graphene: the graphene sheet is transparent in terms of its supporting substrate. By applying surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy to the silicon dioxide (SiO2)-supported graphene electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface and comparing the data with those for the calcium fluoride (CaF2)-supported graphene [Y. Wang et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2023, 62, e202216604], we discuss the impact of the different substrates on the charging of both the graphene and the substrate upon applying potentials. The SiO2-supported graphene shows pseudocapacitive behavior, consistent with the CaF2-supported graphene case, although the surface charges on SiO2 and CaF2 differ substantially. The SiO2 surface is already negatively charged at +0.57 V (vs. Pd/H2), and the negative surface charge is doubled when negative potentials are applied, in contrast with the CaF2 case, where the positive charge is reduced when negative potentials are applied. Interestingly, the charging of the graphene sheet is almost identical between the negatively charged SiO2 surface and positively charged CaF2 surface, demonstrating that the graphene charging is decoupled from the charging of the substrates.

Interlayer Confined Water Enabled Pseudocapacitive Sodium-Ion Storage in Nonaqueous Electrolyte

Electrochemical capacitors have faced the limitations of low energy density for decades, owing to the low capacity of electric double-layer capacitance (EDLC)-type positive electrodes. In this work, we reveal the functions of interlayer confined water in iron vanadate (FeV3O8.7·nH2O) for sodium-ion storage in nonaqueous electrolyte. Using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, in situ Raman, and ex situ X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we demonstrate that both nonfaradaic (surficial EDLC) and faradaic (pseudocapacitance-dominated Na+ intercalation) processes are involved in the charge storages. The interlayer confined water is able to accelerate the fast Na+ intercalations and is highly stable (without the removal of water or co-intercalation of [Na-diglyme]+) in the nonaqueous environment. Furthermore, coupling the pseudocapacitive FeV3O8.7·nH2O with EDLC-type activated carbon (FeVO-AC) as the positive electrode brings comprehensive enhancements, displaying the enlarged compaction density of ∼2 times, specific capacity of ∼1.5 times, and volumetric capacity of ∼3 times compared to the AC electrode. Furthermore, the as-assembled hybrid sodium-ion capacitor, consisting of an FeVO-AC positive electrode and a mesocarbon microbeads negative electrode, shows a high energy density of 108 Wh kg-1 at 108 W kg-1 and 15.3 Wh kg-1 at 8.3 kW kg-1. Our results offer an emerging route for improving both specific and volumetric energy densities of electrochemical capacitors.

Dual role of birnessite on the modulation of acid production and reinforcement of interspecific electron transfer in anaerobic digestion

Achieving efficient anaerobic digestion of highly loaded substrates is one of the most challenging problems in the field of waste resourcing. Here, the addition of birnessite (2.0 g/L) to kitchen wastewater increased the acetate and final methane yields by 40.53 and 99.18 %, respectively, while reducing the yields of propionate and butyrate by 38.17 and 48.86 %, respectively. There were two main pathways for birnessite to enhance anaerobic digestion, one of which is to act as an electron acceptor, by inducing an alteration in the ratio of reduced-state coenzyme I in the microorganism, allowing the acid production process to proceed towards deeper oxidation. Another pathway enhances the interspecific electron transfer between bacteria and archaea and improves methane yield by optimizing the metabolic relationship. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional predictions suggest that the extracellular electron transport pathway of the microorganism is enhanced with the addition of birnessite and that its intracellular metabolic pathway is biased towards the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) generation pathway. This work demonstrated that anaerobic digestion facilitation by metallic minerals was not monolithic; that is, different properties of the minerals were employed to intensify the different stages of anaerobic digestion and obtain an amplification cascade.

Robust Interfacial Effect in Multi-interface Environment through Hybrid Reconstruction Chemistry for Enhanced Energy Storage

Electrochemical-oxidation-driven reconstruction has emerged as an efficient approach for developing advanced materials, but the reconstructed microstructure still faces challenges including inferior conductivity, unsatisfying intrinsic activity, and active-species dissolution. Herein, we present hybrid reconstruction chemistry that synergistically couples electrochemical oxidation with electrochemical polymerization (EOEP) to overcome these constraints. During the EOEP process, the metal hydroxides undergo rapid reconstruction and dynamically couple with polypyrrole (PPy), resulting in an interface-enriched microenvironment. We observe that the interaction between PPy and the reconstructed metal center (i.e., Mn > Ni, Co) is strongly correlated. Theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the strong interaction between Mn sites and PPy breaks the intrinsic limitation of MnO2, rendering MnO2 with a metallic property for fast charge transfer and enhancing the ion-adsorption dynamics. Operando Raman measurement confirms the promise of EOEP-treated Mn(OH)2 (E-MO/PPy) to stably work under a 1.2 V potential window. The tailored E-MO/PPy exhibits a high capacitance of 296 F g-1 at a large current density of 100 A g-1. Our strategy presents breakthroughs in upgrading the electrochemical reconstruction technique, which enables both activity and kinetics engineering of electrode materials for better performance in energy-related fields.

Manganese-cobalt geomimetic materials for supercapacitor electrode

A manganese-cobalt asbolane material synthesized by low-temperature cationic exchange from birnessite in cobalt nitrate solution has been comprehensively characterized and tested for the first time as a massive (with high active mass loading) positive electrode material for to asymmetric aqueous supercapacitors. The structure of this Mn-rich material, which is homologous to the natural asbolanes well known by mineralogists, consists of MnO2-type slabs with partial substitution of Co3+ for Mn; the slabs alternate with Co(OH)2 islands located in the interlayer spacing. This structural arrangement was confirmed through in-depth electronic transmission microscopy analyses, which reveal two interlocking hexagonal sublattices with distinct a lattice-cell parameters but identical c parameters. The electrochemical performance of this geomimetic phase in alkaline electrolytes is highly promising, with specific capacitance of up to 180 F g-1 at moderate current densities and 94 F g-1 at 10 A g-1. Investigation into the charge storage mechanisms indicates effective synergy between the pseudocapacitive properties of the MnO2 slabs and the Co(OH)2 islands, in which protonic conduction is suspected to play a key role. Additionally, long-term cycling and calendar aging tests suggest that the interlayer cobalt gradually migrates to the metal oxide layer upon cycling while maintaining excellent energy storage performance. This study clearly underscores the value of exploring geomimetic minerals as potential electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation of the Solvation States of Hydrated Ions in Confined Water

Ionic transport in nanoscale channels with a critical size comparable to that of ions and solutes exhibits exceptional performance in water desalination, ion separation, electrocatalysts, and supercapacitors. However, the solvation states (SSs), i.e., the hydration structures and probability distribution, of hydrated ions in nanochannels differ from those in the bulk and the perspective of continuum theory. In this work, we conduct ab initio enhanced-sampling atomistic simulations to investigate the ion-specific SSs of monovalent ions (including Li+, Na+, K+, F-, Cl-, and I-) in the graphene channel with a width of 1 nm. Our findings highlight that the SSs of those ions are primarily determined by ion-water hydration, where ion-wall interactions play a minor role. The distribution of ions in layered confined water is a result of ion-specific hydration, which arises from the synergy of entropy and enthalpy. The free energy barriers for transitions between SSs are on the order of 1kBT, allowing for modulation through applying external fields or modifying surface properties. As the ion-wall interaction strengthens, as observed in vermiculite and carbides and nitrides of transition metal channels, the probability of near-wall SSs increases. These results help to improve the performance of nanofluidic devices and provide crucial insights for developing accurate force fields of molecular simulations or advanced theoretical approaches for ion dynamics in confined channels.

Effect of Electrode/Electrolyte Coupling on Birnessite (δ-MnO2) Mechanical Response and Degradation

Understanding the deformation of energy storage electrodes at a local scale and its correlation to electrochemical performance is crucial for designing effective electrode architectures. In this work, the effect of electrolyte cation and electrode morphology on birnessite (δ-MnO₂) deformation during charge storage in aqueous electrolytes was investigated using a mechanical cyclic voltammetry approach via operando atomic force microscopy (AFM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In both K₂SO₄ and Li₂SO₄ electrolytes, the δ-MnO₂ host electrode underwent expansion during cation intercalation, but with different potential dependencies. When intercalating Li⁺, the δ-MnO₂ electrode presents a nonlinear correlation between electrode deformation and electrode height, which is morphologically dependent. These results suggest that the stronger cation-birnessite interaction is the reason for higher local stress heterogeneity when cycling in Li₂SO₄ electrolyte, which might be the origin of the pronounced electrode degradation in this electrolyte.

Bridging the Gap between Charge Storage Site and Transportation Pathway in Molecular-Cage-Based Flexible Electrodes

Porous materials have been widely applied for supercapacitors; however, the relationship between the electrochemical behaviors and the spatial structures has rarely been discussed before. Herein, we report a series of porous coordination cage (PCC) flexible supercapacitors with tunable three-dimensional (3D) cavities and redox centers. PCCs exhibit excellent capacitor performances with a superior molecular capacitance of 2510 F mmol^-1, high areal capacitances of 250 mF cm^-2, and unique cycle stability. The electrochemical behavior of PCCs is dictated by the size, type, and open-close state of the cavities. Both the charge binding site and the charge transportation pathway are unambiguously elucidated for PCC supercapacitors. These findings provide central theoretical support for the "structure-property relationship" for designing powerful electrode materials for flexible energy storage devices.

Largely Pseudocapacitive Two-Dimensional Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework Anodes with Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital Localized in Nickel-bis(dithiolene) Linkages

Although two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) provide an ideal platform for precise tailoring of capacitive electrode materials, high-capacitance 2D c-MOFs for non-aqueous supercapacitors remain to be further explored. Herein, we report a novel phthalocyanine-based nickel-bis(dithiolene) (NiS₄)-linked 2D c-MOF (denoted as Ni₂[CuPcS₈]) with outstanding pseudocapacitive properties in 1 M TEABF₄/acetonitrile. Each NiS₄ linkage is disclosed to reversibly accommodate two electrons, conferring the Ni₂[CuPcS₈] electrode a two-step Faradic reaction with a record-high specific capacitance among the reported 2D c-MOFs in non-aqueous electrolytes (312 F g^-1) and remarkable cycling stability (93.5% after 10,000 cycles). Multiple analyses unveil that the unique electron-storage capability of Ni₂[CuPcS₈] originates from its localized lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) over the nickel-bis(dithiolene) linkage, which allows the efficient delocalization of the injected electrons throughout the conjugated linkage units without inducing apparent bonding stress. The Ni₂[CuPcS₈] anode is used to demonstrate an asymmetric supercapacitor device that delivers a high operating voltage of 2.3 V, a maximum energy density of 57.4 Wh kg^-1, and ultralong stability over 5000 cycles.

Giant Redox Entropy in the Intercalation vs Surface Chemistry of Nanocrystal Frameworks with Confined Pores

Redox intercalation involves coupled ion-electron motion within host materials, finding extensive application in energy storage, electrocatalysis, sensing, and optoelectronics. Monodisperse MOF nanocrystals, compared to their bulk phases, exhibit accelerated mass transport kinetics that promote redox intercalation inside nanoconfined pores. However, nanosizing MOFs significantly increases their external surface-to-volume ratios, making the intercalation redox chemistry into MOF nanocrystals difficult to understand due to the challenge of differentiating redox sites at the exterior of MOF particles from the internal nanoconfined pores. Here, we report that Fe(1,2,3-triazolate)₂ possesses an intercalation-based redox process shifted ca. 1.2 V from redox at the particle surface. Such distinct chemical environments do not appear in idealized MOF crystal structures but become magnified in MOF nanoparticles. Quartz crystal microbalance and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry combined with electrochemical studies identify the existence of a distinct and highly reversible Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ redox event occurring within the MOF interior. Systematic manipulation of experimental parameters (e.g., film thickness, electrolyte species, solvent, and reaction temperature) reveals that this feature arises from the nanoconfined (4.54 Å) pores gating the entry of charge-compensating anions. Due to the requirement for full desolvation and reorganization of electrolyte outside the MOF particle, the anion-coupled oxidation of internal Fe²⁺ sites involves a giant redox entropy change (i.e., 164 J K^-1 mol^-1). Taken together, this study establishes a microscopic picture of ion-intercalation redox chemistry in nanoconfined environments and demonstrates the synthetic possibility of tuning electrode potentials by over a volt, with profound implications for energy capture and storage technologies.

Direct Probe of Electrochemical Pseudocapacitive pH Jump at a Graphene Electrode

Molecular-level insight into interfacial water at a buried electrode interface is essential in electrochemistry, but spectroscopic probing of the interface remains challenging. Here, using surface-specific heterodyne-detected sum-frequency generation (HD-SFG) spectroscopy, we directly access the interfacial water in contact with the graphene electrode supported on calcium fluoride (CaF₂ ). We find phase transition-like variations of the HD-SFG spectra vs. applied potentials, which arises not from the charging/discharging of graphene but from the charging/discharging of the CaF₂ substrate through the pseudocapacitive process. The potential-dependent spectra are nearly identical to the pH-dependent spectra, evidencing that the pseudocapacitive behavior is associated with a substantial local pH change induced by water dissociation between the CaF₂ and graphene. Our work evidences the local molecular-level effects of pseudocapacitive charging at an electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface.

Co-Intercalation of Dual Charge Carriers in Metal-Ion-Confining Layered Vanadium Oxide Nanobelts for Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Vanadium-based oxides with high theoretical specific capacities and open crystal structures are promising cathodes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this work, the confined synthesis can insert metal ions into the interlayer spacing of layered vanadium oxide nanobelts without changing the original morphology. Furthermore, we obtain a series of nanomaterials based on metal-confined nanobelts, and describe the effect of interlayer spacing on the electrochemical performance. The electrochemical properties of the obtained Al_2.65 V₆ O₁₃  ⋅ 2.07H₂ O as cathodes for AZIBs are remarkably improved with a high initial capacity of 571.7 mAh ⋅ g^-1 at 1.0 A g^-1 . Even at a high current density of 5.0 A g^-1 , the initial capacity can still reach 205.7 mAh g^-1 , with a high capacity retention of 89.2 % after 2000 cycles. This study demonstrates that nanobelts confined with metal ions can significantly improve energy storage applications, revealing new avenues for enhancing the electrochemical performance of AZIBs.

Chemistry-mechanics-geometry coupling in positive electrode materials: a scale-bridging perspective for mitigating degradation in lithium-ion batteries through materials design

Despite their rapid emergence as the dominant paradigm for electrochemical energy storage, the full promise of lithium-ion batteries is yet to be fully realized, partly because of challenges in adequately resolving common degradation mechanisms. Positive electrodes of Li-ion batteries store ions in interstitial sites based on redox reactions throughout their interior volume. However, variations in the local concentration of inserted Li-ions and inhomogeneous intercalation-induced structural transformations beget substantial stress. Such stress can accumulate and ultimately engender substantial delamination and transgranular/intergranular fracture in typically brittle oxide materials upon continuous electrochemical cycling. This perspective highlights the coupling between electrochemistry, mechanics, and geometry spanning key electrochemical processes: surface reaction, solid-state diffusion, and phase nucleation/transformation in intercalating positive electrodes. In particular, we highlight recent findings on tunable material design parameters that can be used to modulate the kinetics and thermodynamics of intercalation phenomena, spanning the range from atomistic and crystallographic materials design principles (based on alloying, polymorphism, and pre-intercalation) to emergent mesoscale structuring of electrode architectures (through control of crystallite dimensions and geometry, curvature, and external strain). This framework enables intercalation chemistry design principles to be mapped to degradation phenomena based on consideration of mechanics coupling across decades of length scales. Scale-bridging characterization and modeling, along with materials design, holds promise for deciphering mechanistic understanding, modulating multiphysics couplings, and devising actionable strategies to substantially modify intercalation phase diagrams in a manner that unlocks greater useable capacity and enables alleviation of chemo-mechanical degradation mechanisms.

Selectivity of Electrochemical Ion Insertion into Manganese Dioxide Polymorphs

The ion insertion redox chemistry of manganese dioxide has diverse applications in energy storage, catalysis, and chemical separations. Unique properties derive from the assembly of Mn-O octahedra into polymorphic structures that can host protons and nonprotonic cations in interstitial sites. Despite many reports on individual ion-polymorph couples, much less is known about the selectivity of electrochemical ion insertion in MnO₂. In this work, we use density functional theory to holistically compare the electrochemistry of A_xMnO₂ (where A = H⁺, Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, Al³⁺) in aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes. We develop an efficient computational scheme demonstrating that Hubbard-U correction has a greater impact on calculating accurate redox energetics than choice of exchange-correlation functional. Using PBE+U, we find that for nonprotonic cations, ion selectivity depends on the oxygen coordination environments inside a polymorph. When H⁺ is present, however, the driving force to form hydroxyl bonds is usually stronger. In aqueous electrolytes, only three ion-polymorph pairs are thermodynamically stable within water's voltage stability window (Na⁺ and K⁺ in α-MnO₂, and Li⁺ in λ-MnO₂), with all other ion insertion being metastable. We find Al³⁺ may insert into the δ, R, and λ polymorphs across the full 2-electron redox of MnO₂ at high voltage; however, electrolytes for multivalent ions must be designed to impede the formation of insoluble precipitates and facilitate cation desolvation. We also show that small ions coinsert with water in α-MnO₂ to achieve greater coordination by oxygen, while solvation energies and kinetic effects dictate water coinsertion in δ-MnO₂. Taken together, these findings explain reports of mixed ion insertion mechanisms in aqueous electrolytes and highlight promising design strategies for safe, high energy density electrochemical energy storage, desalination batteries, and electrocatalysts.

Chemical Preintercalation Synthesis of Versatile Electrode Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage

ConspectusThe widespread use of electrical plants and grids to generate, transmit, and deliver power to consumers makes electricity the most convenient form of energy to transport, control, and use. Balancing electricity demand with electricity supply requires a mechanism for energy storage, which is enabled by electrical energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. In addition to the grid-level energy storage, we have all witnessed the quick growth of a number of applications that require autonomous power, illustrated by the Internet of Things, and electrification of transport. Batteries, when developed for targeted applications with specific requirements, require new materials with improved performance enabled by rational design on the atomic level. The material tunability knobs include chemical composition, structure, morphology, and heterointerfaces, among others. Synthesis methods that could enable control of these parameters while offering versatility and being facile are highly desired.In this Account, we describe a synthesis strategy for the creation of new intercalation host oxides, hybrid materials, and compounds with oxide/carbon heterointerfaces for use as electrodes in intercalation batteries. We begin by introducing a strategy called the chemical preintercalation synthesis approach and describing processing steps that can be used to tune the material's chemical composition, structure, and morphology. We then show how the chemical preintercalation of inorganic ions can be used to improve the ion diffusion and stability of the synthesized materials. We reveal how confined interlayer water can be controlled and how the degree of hydration affects the electrochemical performance. This is followed by a demonstration of the chemical preintercalation of organic molecules leading to unprecedented expansion of the interlayer region up to ∼30 Å and initial electrochemical characterization of the obtained hybrid materials. We then present evidence that the carbonization of the interlayer organic molecules is an efficient synthetic pathway for creating oxide/carbon heterointerfaces and improving the electronic conductivity of oxides, which leads to improved stability and rate capability during electrochemical cycling. The examples discussed in this Account show that the chemical preintercalation synthesis approach opens pathways for the preparation of materials that have not been synthesized previously, such as new phases, hybrid materials, and 2D heterostructures with advanced functionalities. We demonstrate that chemical preintercalation can be used to effectively tune the chemistry of the confined interlayer region in layered phases and form tight oxide/carbon heterointerfaces enabling control of the material properties at the atomic level.

Substrate-Enabled Room-Temperature Electrochemical Deposition of Crystalline ZnMnO3

Mixed transition metal oxides have emerged as promising electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. To optimize the functional electrode properties, synthesis approaches allowing for a systematic tailoring of the materials' composition, crystal structure and morphology are urgently needed. Here we report on the room-temperature electrodeposition of a ternary oxide based on earth-abundant metals, specifically, the defective cubic spinel ZnMnO₃ . In this unprecedented approach, ZnO surfaces act as (i) electron source for the interfacial reduction of MnO₄ ^- in aqueous solution, (ii) as substrate for epitaxial growth of the deposit and (iii) as Zn precursor for the formation of ZnMnO₃ . Epitaxial growth of ZnMnO₃ on the lateral facets of ZnO nanowires assures effective electronic communication between the electroactive material and the conducting scaffold and gives rise to a pronounced 2-dimensional morphology of the electrodeposit forming - after partial delamination from the substrate - twisted nanosheets. The synthesis strategy shows promise for the direct growth of different mixed transition metal oxides as electroactive phase onto conductive substrates and thus for the fabrication of binder-free nanocomposite electrodes.

Composite Mn-Co electrode materials for supercapacitors: why the precursor's morphology matters!

In the energy storage field, an electrode material must possess both good ionic and electronic conductivities to perform well, especially when high power is needed. In this context, the development of composite electrode materials combining an electrochemically active and good ionic conductor phase with an electronic conductor appears as a perfectly adapted approach to generate a synergetic effect and optimize the energy storage performance. In this work, three layered MnO2 phases with various morphologies (veils, nanoplatelets and microplatelets) were combined with electronic conductor cobalt oxyhydroxides with different platelet sizes (∼20 nm vs. 70 nm wide), to synthesize 6 different composites by exfoliation and restacking processes. The influence of precursors' morphology on the distribution of the Mn and Co objects within the composites was carefully investigated and correlated with the electrochemical performance of the final restacked material. Overall, the best performing restacked composite was obtained by combining MnO2 possessing a veil morphology with the smallest cobalt oxyhydroxide nanoplatelets, leading to the most homogeneous distribution of the Mn and Co objects at the nanoscale. More generally, the aim of this work is to understand how the size and morphology of the precursor building blocks influence their distribution homogeneity within the final composite and to find the most compatible building blocks to reach a homogeneous distribution at the nanoscale.

Critical role of water structure around interlayer ions for ion storage in layered double hydroxides

Water-containing layered materials have found various applications such as water purification and energy storage. The highly structured water molecules around ions under the confinement between the layers determine the ion storage ability. Yet, the relationship between the configuration of interlayer ions and water structure in high ion storage layered materials is elusive. Herein, using layered double hydroxides, we demonstrate that the water structure is sensitive to the filling density of ions in the interlayer space and governs the ion storage. For ion storage of dilute nitrate ions, a 24% decrease in the filling density increases the nitrate storage capacity by 300%. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring studies, combined with multimodal ex situ experiments and theoretical calculations, reveal that the decreasing filling density effectively facilitates the 2D hydrogen-bond networking structure in water around interlayer nitrate ions along with minimal change in the layered structure, leading to the high storage capacity.

Evidence of Formation of Monolayer Hydrated Salts in Nanopores

Despite much effort being devoted to the study of ionic aqueous solutions at the nanoscale, our fundamental understanding of the microscopic kinetic and thermodynamic behaviors in these systems remains largely incomplete. Herein, we reported the first 10 μs molecular dynamics simulation, providing evidence of the spontaneous formation of monolayer hexagonal honeycomb hydrated salts of XCl₂·6H₂O (X = Ba, Sr, Ca, and Mg) from electrolyte aqueous solutions confined in an angstrom-scale slit under ambient conditions. By using both the classical molecular dynamics simulations and the first-principles Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, we further demonstrated that the hydrated salts were stable not only at ambient temperature but also at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of formation of hydrated salt in water is contrary to the conventional view. The free energy calculations and dehydration analyses indicated that the spontaneous formation of hydrated salts can be attributed to the interplay between ion hydration and Coulombic attractions in the highly confined water. In addition to providing molecular-level insights into the novel behavior of ionic aqueous solutions at the nanoscale, our findings may have implications for the future exploration of potential existence of water molecules in the saline deposits on hot planets.

Dual Defocused Laser Pyrolysis: A Lasing-Centric Strategy for Defect and Morphological Optimization in Microsupercapacitor Electrodes

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has shown great potential for controllable and scalable realization of microsupercapacitors (MSCs). However, as is well-known, LIG electrodes suffer from low charge storage capacity and conductance. In this paper, a lasing-centric method is presented for defect control and morphological enhancement in LIG electrodes through unique dual laser pyrolysis. This method encompasses dual lasing pyrolysis, one for the synthesis of defocused LIG, and another for the decoration of Ru nanoparticles to enhance electrochemical performance. Fundamentally, the investigation simultaneously optimizes for defocused lasing distance and lasing speed, which to the best of the author's knowledge, has not been previously reported. The defocused LIG electrode exhibits a remarkably improved electrochemical capacitance of over 25 times (114 mF cm^-2 ) compared to the one based on focused laser-induced graphene (FLIG). As a device demonstration, a flexible and self-healable MSC has been fabricated based on DFLIG/Ru-PEDOT/Au electrodes, exhibiting a high areal specific capacitance (25.7 mF cm^-2 ), excellent electrochemical stability (91% retention of specific capacitance after 8000 cycles), and good self-healing performance (85.6% retention of specific capacitance after two cut-heal cycles). By enhancing material properties via dual defocused laser pyrolysis, this work presents a strategy for highly controllable and scalable realization of electrodes in micro-energy storage devices.

Constructing Hydrophobic Interface with Close-Packed Coordination Supramolecular Network for Long-Cycling and Dendrite-Free Zn-Metal Batteries

Commercialization of aqueous zinc-metal batteries remains unrealistic due to the substantial dendrite growth and side reaction issues on the zinc anodes. It is highly demanded to develop easy-to-handle approaches for constructing stable, dense, as well as homogeneous solid anode/electrolyte interfaces. Herein, the authors construct the zinc anode interface with a close-packed Zn-TSA (TSA = thiosalicylate) coordination supramolecular network through the facile and up-scalable wet-chemical method. The hydrophobic Zn-TSA network can block solvated water and establish a solid-state diffusion barrier to well-distribute the interfacial Zn²⁺ , thus inhibiting hydrogen evolution and zinc dendrite growth on the anode. Meanwhile, the Zn-TSA network induces the formation of a uniform and stable solid electrolyte interphase composed of multiple inorganic-organic compounds. This denser structure can accommodate and self-heal the crack/degradation of the anode interphase associated with the repeated volume changes, and suppress the generation of detrimental by-product, Zn_x (OTF^- )_y (OH)_2x-y ·nH₂ O. Such a rationally fabricated anode/electrolyte interface further endows the assembled symmetric cells with superior plating/stripping stability for over 2000 h without dendrite formation (at 1 mA cm^-2 and 1 mAh cm^-2 ). Furthermore, this zinc anode has practical application in the Zn-MoS₂ and Zn-V₂ O₅ full cells. This study provides a new train of thought for constructing the dense interface of zinc-metal anode.

High-Energy and Stable Subfreezing Aqueous Zn-MnO2 Batteries with Selective and Pseudocapacitive Zn-Ion Insertion in MnO2

One major challenge of aqueous Zn-MnO₂ batteries for practical applications is their unacceptable performance below freezing temperatures. Here the use of simple Zn(ClO₄ )₂ aqueous electrolytes is described for all-weather Zn-MnO₂ batteries even down to -60 °C. The symmetric, bulky ClO₄ ^- anion effectively disrupts hydrogen bonds between water molecules and provides intrinsic ion diffusion even while frozen, and enables ≈260 mAh g^-1 on MnO₂ cathodes at -30 °C . It is identified that subfreezing cycling shifts the reaction mechanism on the MnO₂ cathode from unstable H⁺ insertion to predominantly pseudocapacitive Zn²⁺ insertion, which converts MnO₂ nanofibers into complicated zincated MnO_x that are largely disordered and appeared as crumpled paper sheets. The Zn²⁺ insertion at -30 °C is faster and much more stable than at 20 °C, and delivers ≈80% capacity retention for 1000 cycles without Mn²⁺ additives. In addition, simple Zn(ClO₄ )₂ electrolyte also enables a nearly fully reversible and dendrite-free Zn anode at -30 °C with ≈98% Coulombic efficiency. Zn-MnO₂ prototypes with an experimentally verified unit energy density of 148 Wh kg^-1 at a negative-to-positive ratio of 1.5 and an electrolyte-to-capacity ratio of 2.0 are further demonstrated.
