A Reassessment of the Impact and Significance of Social Media to Pathology

CONTEXT

Social media (SM) use in pathology and medicine today is widespread, receives active advocacy, and is said to bring a host of benefits. In latter days, the harmful effects of SM have received attention, but they have yet been followed by greater encouragement of professionalized SM usage. SM use in medicine has seen adoption in parallel to its general ascendancy, even though the platforms are products with purposes misaligned with the practice of medicine.

OBJECTIVE

To (1) characterize premises and forces that propel professional SM platform adoption and use, and (2) examine wide-ranging literature, both medical and nonmedical, that substantiates the premises and to find counteracting perspectives and evidence.

DATA SOURCES

Review of the literature using relevant keyword searches in PubMed, Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Web of Science for articles that study/describe professional SM use in pathology and medicine. Additionally, we examined business, technology, and social sciences literature and high-quality gray literature (newspapers, books, blogs) that addressed questions in relation to the topic of professional SM adoption.

CONCLUSIONS

We identified 6 major premises as motivators of professional SM use and highlight significant counteracting factors. We conclude that the harms of professionalized SM use have not been fully considered in the medical literature and that a change in direction and the creation of new communication platforms would be beneficial.

"Post or Perish"? An Early Career Researcher's Guide to Using Social Media

Social media usage has soared in the last decade, with the majority of adults having an account on at least one platform. Sites such as LinkedIn, X, and TikTok allow users to share content using different forms, for example, written or video, long form or short form. Social media can be used by researchers to forge collaborations, rapidly disseminate new research, and demonstrate societal impact. This opinion piece aims to highlight the value of social media, in particular for early career researchers, and offer suggestions on how early career researchers can strategically use social media to build a network and an online presence. We reflect on our own experiences of social media and include some of the reasons we have been deterred from it in the past, such as fear of making a mistake, being misunderstood, or painted as being an overconfident "know it all." As the demonstration of impact and engagement becomes ever more important in grant applications and job security, social media competency is a powerful professional skill that will be important for all scientists.

What's trending? Reach and content of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine on social media

BACKGROUND

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine uses social media to increase awareness of the Society and its key programs and to foster community and discussion around perinatal health, especially on Twitter. The influence and role of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter account in public discourse around issues relevant to pregnancy have not been studied.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the trends in engagement with the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine on Twitter by analyzing Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine follower growth and discussion topics on Twitter compared with Facebook and by quantifying public engagement during the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Annual Pregnancy Meeting.

STUDY DESIGN

This retrospective study analyzed follower growth data from August 2019 to July 2022 for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter (@MySMFM) and Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Facebook (@SocietyforMaternalFetalMedicine) accounts. We identified the top 10 tweets and Facebook posts during the study period using Twitter Analytics and Facebook data. The popularity of tweets and Facebook posts was determined by "impressions" and "reach," respectively; these metrics reflect the number of times a post was viewed. To evaluate annual trends in Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter engagement, we analyzed data associated with the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Annual Pregnancy Meeting, including the number of tweets using the hashtag (#SMFM(Year)) and overall impressions for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter account for each meeting from 2016 to 2023.

RESULTS

The absolute number of new followers for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter and Facebook accounts was similar, but the relative increase and rate of follower growth was higher for Twitter than for Facebook. The Twitter account consistently gained followers, whereas the Facebook account experienced intermittent periods of stagnancy or follower loss. More than half of the top-ranked posts on Twitter and Facebook mentioned the COVID-19 vaccine; other popular topics included COVID-19 and abortion. During the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Annual Pregnancy Meeting, the number of tweets using the meeting hashtag consistently peaked on meeting day 4, coincident with the opening plenary session (mean 1270±499). An upward trend in annual pregnancy meeting tweets was observed each year until 2021-the first virtual Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine meeting.

CONCLUSION

The trends in Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Twitter engagement suggest increasing use and popularity of the platform for timely dissemination of pregnancy-related news, guidelines, and research. The reduction in annual pregnancy meeting tweets and impressions in 2021 and 2022 suggests the potential negative effect of virtual meetings on Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine member engagement around annual meeting content.

The International Natural Product Sciences Taskforce (INPST) and the power of Twitter networking exemplified through #INPST hashtag analysis

BACKGROUND

The development of digital technologies and the evolution of open innovation approaches have enabled the creation of diverse virtual organizations and enterprises coordinating their activities primarily online. The open innovation platform titled "International Natural Product Sciences Taskforce" (INPST) was established in 2018, to bring together in collaborative environment individuals and organizations interested in natural product scientific research, and to empower their interactions by using digital communication tools.

METHODS

In this work, we present a general overview of INPST activities and showcase the specific use of Twitter as a powerful networking tool that was used to host a one-week "2021 INPST Twitter Networking Event" (spanning from 31st May 2021 to 6th June 2021) based on the application of the Twitter hashtag #INPST.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

The use of this hashtag during the networking event period was analyzed with Symplur Signals (https://www.symplur.com/), revealing a total of 6,036 tweets, shared by 686 users, which generated a total of 65,004,773 impressions (views of the respective tweets). This networking event's achieved high visibility and participation rate showcases a convincing example of how this social media platform can be used as a highly effective tool to host virtual Twitter-based international biomedical research events.

The (R)evolution of Social Media in Oncology: Engage, Enlighten, and Encourage

Summary:

Social media (SoMe) platforms have the ability to strengthen the oncology community, leading to intellectual connections that with time develop into friendships. SoMe has immense potential in all areas of medicine, and SoMe in oncology is proof of this, raising awareness about clinical trials, promoting cancer prevention techniques, amplifying oncology information, enabling diverse viewpoints into conversations, as well as educating colleagues regardless of geography.

Twitter Conversations About Pancreatic Cancer by Health Care Providers and the General Public: Thematic Analysis

Background

 There is a growing interest in the pattern of consumption of health-related information on social media platforms.

Objective

We evaluated the content of discussions around pancreatic cancer on Twitter to identify subtopics of greatest interest to health care providers and the general public. 

Methods

 We used an online analytical tool (Creation Pinpoint) to quantify Twitter mentions (tweets and retweets) related to pancreatic cancer between January 2018 and December 2019. Keywords, hashtags, word combinations, and phrases were used to identify mentions. Health care provider profiles were identified using machine learning and then verified by a human analyst. Remaining user profiles were classified as belonging to the general public. Data from conversations were stratified qualitatively into 5 domains: (1) prevention, (2) survivorship, (3) treatment, (4) research, and (5) policy. We compared the themes of conversations initiated by health care providers and the general public and analyzed the impact of the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and announcements by public figures of pancreatic cancer diagnoses on the overall volume of conversations. 

Results

 Out of 1,258,028 mentions of pancreatic cancer, 313,668 unique mentions were classified into the 5 domains. We found that health care providers most commonly discussed pancreatic cancer research (10,640/27,031 mentions, 39.4%), while the general public most commonly discussed treatment (154,484/307,449 mentions, 50.2%). Health care providers were found to be more likely to initiate conversations related to research (odds ratio [OR] 1.75, 95% CI 1.70-1.79, P<.001) and prevention (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.41-1.57, P<.001) whereas the general public took the lead in the domains of treatment (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.58-1.69, P<.001) and survivorship (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.13-1.21, P<.001). Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month did not increase the number of mentions by health care providers in any of the 5 domains, but general public mentions increased temporarily in all domains except prevention and policy. Health care provider mentions did not increase with announcements by public figures of pancreatic cancer diagnoses. After Alex Trebek, host of the television show Jeopardy, received his diagnosis, general public mentions of survivorship increased, while Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s diagnosis increased conversations on treatment. 

Conclusions

Health care provider conversations on Twitter are not aligned with the general public. Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month temporarily increased general public conversations about treatment, research, and survivorship, but not prevention or policy. Future studies are needed to understand how conversations on social media platforms can be leveraged to increase health care awareness among the general public.

Social media in surgery: evolving role in research communication and beyond

PURPOSE

To present social media (SoMe) platforms for surgeons, how these are used, with what impact, and their roles for research communication.

METHODS

A narrative review based on a literature search regarding social media use, of studies and findings pertaining to surgical disciplines, and the authors' own experience.

RESULTS

Several social networking platforms for surgeons are presented to the reader. The more frequently used, i.e., Twitter, is presented with details of opportunities, specific fora for communication, presenting tips for effective use, and also some caveats to use. Details of how the surgical community evolved through the use of the hashtag #SoMe4Surgery are presented. The impact on gender diversity in surgery through important hashtags (from #ILookLikeASurgeon to #MedBikini) is discussed. Practical tips on generating tweets and use of visual abstracts are presented, with influence on post-production distribution of journal articles through "tweetorials" and "tweetchats." Findings from seminal studies on SoMe and the impact on traditional metrics (regular citations) and alternative metrics (Altmetrics, including tweets, retweets, news outlet mentions) are presented. Some concerns on misuse and SoMe caveats are discussed.

CONCLUSION

Over the last two decades, social media has had a huge impact on science dissemination, journal article discussions, and presentation of conference news. Immediate and real-time presentation of studies, articles, or presentations has flattened hierarchy for participation, debate, and engagement. Surgeons should learn how to use novel communication technology to advance the field and further professional and public interaction.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put the clinical laboratory in the spotlight. The news media is regularly seeking out interviews with microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, and pathologists.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has put the clinical laboratory in the spotlight. The news media is regularly seeking out interviews with microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, and pathologists. Increased public exposure offers opportunities to improve how laboratory professionals communicate our insights. We can emphasize what is new, unusual, or controversial about our knowledge; utilize social media effectively; and improve relationships with journalists by understanding their workflow and traditions. While public engagement has risks and must be considerate of institutional policies, it also validates our value to patients, policy makers, and employers.

The Network That Never Sleeps

This review describes how Twitter is currently used by laboratory professionals for education, research, and networking. This platform has a global audience. It enables users to post information publicly, easily, rapidly, and free of charge. The absence of hierarchies enables interactions that may not be feasible offline. Laboratory professionals teach thousands of people using text, images, polls, and videos. Academic discussion flourishes without paywalls. Published research is shared faster than ever before, articles are discussed in online journal clubs, and research collaborations are facilitated. Pathologists network globally and make new friends within and beyond their specialty. Pathology departments and residency programs showcase trainees and faculty and celebrate graduations. As users in one time zone go to bed, others who are just waking up begin to read and tweet, creating a 24/7/365 live global online conference. We encourage others to plug into the power of Twitter, the network that never sleeps.
