Tree diversity increases decadal forest soil carbon and nitrogen accrual

Synergistic effects of clays and cyanobacteria on the accumulation dynamics of soil organic carbon in artificial biocrusts

Biocrusts are the primary organic carbon reservoirs in desert areas, in which inorganic clays potentially playing significant roles; however, the specific details of these roles remain largely unclear. In this study, typical 1:1 type (kaolin) and 2:1 type (montmorillonite, MMT) clay minerals were added to artificial biocrusts to investigate their effect on the acquisition performance of soil organic carbon (SOC). After 84 days of cultivation, the enhancement effects of kaolin and MMT were significant, resulting in SOC increments that were 5.03 times and 4.08 times higher than those of the Algae group (without clay). Notably, the two types of clay exhibited different advantages in SOC accumulation. Due to its larger external specific surface area and higher cation exchange capacity, MMT contributes more effectively to SOC stability. Specifically, the mineralization quotient (qM), hot-water extractable organic carbon (HWEOC), and molecular structural stability of SOC in the MMT group were 0.3, 0.34, and 1.31 times those of the Algae group, respectively. In contrast, kaolin was more favorable for microbial growth and SOC formation due to its higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), photosynthetic performance index (PIABS), and Shannon index in the kaolin group were 5.67, 2.44, 11.95, and 1.82 times those of the Algae group, respectively. These findings highlighted the synergistic effect for SOC accumulation of clay and cyanobacteria in artificial biocrust systems, clarified the specific roles of two typical clay minerals, and offered new insights for accelerating the restoration of nutrient-limited areas such as deserts.

Latitudinal patterns of tree β-diversity and relevant ecological processes vary across spatial extents in forests of southeastern China

Latitudinal patterns of tree β-diversity reveal important insights into the biogeographical processes that influence forest ecosystems. Although previous studies have extensively documented β-diversity within relatively small spatial extents, the potential drivers of β-diversity along latitudinal gradients are still not well understood at larger spatial extents. In this study, we determined whether tree β-diversity is correlated with latitude in forests of southeastern China, and if so, what ecological processes contribute to these patterns of tree β-diversity. We specifically aimed to disentangle the relative contributions from interspecific aggregation and environmental filtering across various spatial extents. We delineated regional communities comprising multiple nearby national forest inventory (NFI) plots around random focal plots. The number of NFI plots in a regional community served as a surrogate for spatial extent. We also used a null model to simulate randomly assembled communities and quantify the deviation (β-deviation) between observed and expected β-diversity. We found that β-diversity decreased along a latitudinal gradient and that this pattern was clearer at larger spatial extents. In addition, latitudinal patterns of β-deviation were explained by the degree of species spatial aggregation. We also identified environmental factors that drive β-deviation in these forests, including precipitation, seasonality, and temperature variation. At larger spatial extents, these environmental variables explained up to 84% of the β-deviation. Our results reinforce that ecological processes are scale-dependent and collectively contribute to the β-gradient in subtropical forests. We recommend that conservation efforts maintain diverse forests and heterogeneous environments at multiple spatial extents to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

Long-term stability of productivity increases with tree diversity in Canadian forests

The temporal stability of forest productivity is a key ecosystem function and an essential service to humanity. Plot-scale tree diversity experiments with observations over 10 to 11 y indicate that tree diversity increases stability under various environmental changes. However, it remains unknown whether these small-scale experimental findings are relevant to the longer-term stability of natural forests. Using 7,500 natural forest plots across much of Canada, monitored over three to four decades on average, we provide strong evidence that higher temporal stability (defined as the mean productivity divided by its SD over time) is consistently associated with greater tree functional, phylogenetic, and taxonomic diversity across all lengths of observations. Specifically, increasing functional diversity from its minimum to maximum values increases stability, mean productivity, and the temporal SD of productivity by 14%, 36%, and 28%, respectively. Our results highlight that the promotion of functionally, phylogenetically, and/or taxonomically diverse forests could enhance the long-term productivity and stability of natural forests.

Increasing plant diversity enhances soil organic carbon storage in typical wetlands of northern China

Soil organic carbon plays an important role in climate change mitigation, and can be strongly affected by plant diversity. Although a positive effect of plant diversity on soil organic carbon storage has been confirmed in grasslands and forests, it remains unclear whether this effect exists in wetlands. In this study, we investigated plant diversity, soil properties and soil organic carbon across five typical wetlands of northern China, to test the effect of plant diversity on soil organic carbon and clarified the regulators. Increasing plant diversity significantly increased belowground biomass of wetland plant communities, and both soil organic carbon content and storage were significantly positively related to wetland plant diversity. The positive effect of plant diversity was influenced by belowground biomass of wetland plant communities, soil microbial biomass carbon, and soil properties, especially soil water content and bulk density. The structural equation model showed that soil organic carbon storage was dominantly affected by microbial biomass carbon, plant diversity and biomass, with standardized total effects of 0.66 and 0.47, respectively, and there was a significant positive relationship between soil organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon. These results suggest that increasing plant diversity can potentially promote the ability of wetlands to store organic carbon in soils. The findings highlight the importance of plant diversity on soil organic carbon in wetland ecosystems, and have implications for managing wetlands to increase carbon sinks and to mitigate global climate change.

Depth-dependent effects of forest diversification on soil functionality and microbial community characteristics in subtropical forests

Soil microbes are critical to the maintenance of forest ecosystem function and stability. Forest diversification, such as monocultures versus mixed forests stands, can strongly influence microbial community patterns and processes, as well as their role in soil ecosystem multifunctionality, such as in subtropical forest ecosystems. However, less is known about these patterns and processes vary with soil depth. Here, we investigated the results of an eight-year forest diversification field experiment comparing the soil ecosystem multifunctionality, bacterial and fungal community assembly, and network patterns in mixed versus monoculture plantations along vertical profiles (0-80 cm depth) in a subtropical region. We found that the introduction of broadleaf trees in coniferous monocultures led to enhanced synergies between multiple functions, thus improving soil multifunctionality. The effects of mixed plantations on the functional potential in top soils were greater than in deep soils, especially for carbon degradation genes (apu, xylA, cex, and glx). Microbial community assembly in the top layer, particularly in mixed plantations, was dominated by stochastic processes, whereas deterministic were more important in the deep layer. Soil microbial network complexity and stability were higher in the top layer of mixed plantations, but in the deep layer was monoculture. Interestingly, the changes in microbial communities and multifunctionality in the top layer were mainly related to variation in nutrients, whereas those in the deep were more influenced by soil moisture. Overall, we reveal positive effects of mixed forest stands on soil microbial characteristics and functionality compared to that of monocultures. Our findings highlighted the importance of enhancing functional diversity through the promotion of tree species diversity, and managers can better develop forest management strategies to promote soil health under global change scenarios.

Soil phosphorus compared to nitrogen limitation increases the uncertainty of subsoil organic carbon sequestration in Pinus massoniana mixed forests

Limited nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability will constrain terrestrial carbon sinks in the 21st century. Mixed forests improve the plant community composition and productivity of pure coniferous forests. Nevertheless, it is uncertain whether and to what extent changes in soil N and P dynamics caused by mixed forests can affect forest soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. The research purpose is to demonstrate and evaluate the effects of soil N and P on SOC stocks in Pinus massoniana mixed forests. Our meta-analysis, which included 616 paired observations, revealed that the coupling of soil N, P, and plant species richness (PSR) contributed 22.6%, 28.8%, and 28.4%, respectively, to SOC stock accumulation in the topsoil (0-20 cm), subsoil (20-100 cm), and whole profile (0-100 cm). The interactions between soil total N and P concentrations (TN:TP ratios) dominated the increase in SOC stocks in the mixed forest topsoil and whole profile, explaining 35.6% and 20.3% of the variation, respectively. Conversely, independent TN and TP concentrations were the primary contributors (explained by 17.5% and 12.3%, respectively) to subsoil SOC stocks increase. The TN and TP concentrations limit SOC stock accumulation in mixed forests for the next 60 years (2025-2085), with the TP concentration and TN:TP ratio having a greater effect in subsoil. Fortunately, the TN and TP limitations on SOC stock increase in mixed forests can be mitigated and balanced by altering soil TN:TP ratio by increasing or decreasing the PSR (PSR thresholds for topsoil, subsoil, and whole profile were 15, 8, and 8, respectively). Overall, plant mixing fails to enhance plant availability of pure forest soil N and P. Accelerated N cycling and increased P reabsorption efficiency are optimal strategies for balancing N and P supply in mixed forests, promoting biomass accumulation, and ensuring SOC stocks increase.

Do poplar plantations enhance organic carbon stocks in arable soils? A comprehensive study from Northern Italy

Soil organic carbon (SOC) depletion, primarily driven by land use change, is a global challenge influenced by factors such as climate, plant cultivation, and adopted management practices. Poplar plantations (PP), predominantly used for plywood and bioenergy production in the Mediterranean, have shown carbon (C) potential capture as biomass. However, their contribution to SOC and climate change mitigation remains understudied. Thus, this study evaluates the potential of PP in enhancing SOC stocks in arable soils in Northern Italy covering fifteen sites within six farms. SOC stocks under land use change were analyzed, at 0-10 and 10-30 cm soil depths, using the time-for-space substitution method (paired comparison), comparing cropland (CR) to PP, and spatial survey approach evaluating SOC after thirty years of PP. Additionally, conventional PP was also compared with c plantations (PC), which integrate diverse tree species supporting biodiversity and fostering sustainability. Results showed that PP maintains higher SOC stock than CR management, with significant variations observed in fifty percent of the cases. Relative SOC sequestration rates were 0.09 and 0.32 Mg C ha-1 year-1 at 0‒10 and 10‒30 depth, respectively. The mean SOC rate for PP was 0.75 Mg C ha-1 year-1 under stock differential methods, with the initial C loss observed in the early stages (1‒5 years). PC demonstrated greater SOC stocks and sequestration rates, indicating its potential for climate change mitigation through European policies. Overall, this study shows PP has potential for C sequestration varies by sites. Further investigation into fertilization and deep-soil tillage is needed to understand their impact on SOC stocks. Moreover, direct engagement with PP farmers revealed supply chain issues, highlighting the need for sustainability improvement.

Vegetation restoration enhancing soil carbon sequestration in karst rocky desertification ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Vegetation restoration measures have been increasingly employed to alleviate rocky desertification in karst ecosystems. However, the comprehensive effects of these interventions on soil properties and soil organic carbon (SOC) remain poorly understood. Herein, we gathered 644 paired observations from 68 studies and conducted a meta-analysis to quantify the performance of different vegetation restoration measures including moss (MS), grassland (GL), cash crop (CP), shrub (SH), and secondary forest (SF) through soil properties and SOC. Our results demonstrated significant effects of MS, GL, CP, SH, and SF on soil biotic and abiotic factors, each with distinct response characteristics. Particularly, MS significantly enhanced all soil properties (excluding a slight decrease in soil pH by 10.8%). Moreover, MS, GL, CP, SH, and SF could elevate SOC by 32.1%, 17.6%, 24.9%, 59.2%, and 48.7% respectively. Utilizing random forest and linear regression models, we identified primary drivers for SOC in MS, GL, CP, SH, and SF as soil moisture content, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, soil microbial phosphorus, total nitrogen, and β-1,4-glucosidase, respectively. This meta-analysis underlined the varied effects of vegetation restoration measures on soil properties and advocates for restoration measures that prioritize plant productivity and reduce soil temperature during the karst rocky desertification restoration process. Additionally, this study underscores the pivotal role of vegetation rehabilitation in environmental conservation and carbon sequestration of ecologically vulnerable regions.

Eucalyptus and Native Broadleaf Mixed Cultures Boost Soil Multifunctionality by Regulating Soil Fertility and Fungal Community Dynamics

The growing recognition of mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations as a means of offsetting the detrimental impacts of pure Eucalyptus plantations on soil fertility and the wider ecological environment is accompanied by a clear and undeniable positive impact on forest ecosystem functions. Nevertheless, the question of how mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations enhance soil multifunctionality (SMF) and the mechanisms driving soil fungal communities remains unanswered. In this study, three types of mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations were selected and compared with neighboring evergreen broadleaf forests and pure Eucalyptus plantations. SMF was quantified using 20 parameters related to soil nutrient cycling. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) was employed to identify the key drivers regulating SMF. The findings of this study indicate that mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations significantly enhance SMF. Mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations led to improvements in soil properties (7.60-52.22%), enzyme activities (10.13-275.51%), and fungal community diversity (1.54-29.5%) to varying degrees compared with pure Eucalyptus plantations. Additionally, the mixed plantations exhibit enhanced connectivity and complexity in fungal co-occurrence networks. The PLS-PM results reveal that soil properties, fungal diversity, and co-occurrence network complexity directly and positively drive changes in SMF. Furthermore, soil properties exert an indirect influence on SMF through their impact on fungal diversity, species composition, and network complexity. The findings of this study highlight the significant role of mixed Eucalyptus and native broadleaf plantations in enhancing SMF through improved soil properties, fungal diversity, and co-occurrence network complexity. This indicates that incorporating native broadleaf species into Eucalyptus plantations can effectively mitigate the negative impacts of monoculture plantations on soil health and ecosystem functionality. In conclusion, our study contributes to the understanding of how mixed plantations influence SMF, offering new insights into the optimization of forest management and ecological restoration strategies in artificial forest ecosystems.

Numerical simulation of landscape ecological river flow structure based on vegetation patch distribution and fragmentation

The self-organizing biological characteristics of vegetation and human activities lead to the disruption of the continuous spatial attributes of natural watersheds, which are significant factors affecting river wetland ecosystems. To clarify the landscape ecological flow characteristics of vegetation patch distribution and fragmentation, this study used the three-dimensional Reynolds stress turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent software. The model considered three vegetation patch coverages under two different submersion states and four fragmentation types of vegetation patches under the same coverage conditions within specific vegetation areas. The flow characteristics of longitudinally discontinuous rigid vegetation patches, occupying half of the width of the river channel, were numerically simulated. The model's applicability was verified by indoor open-channel flume experiments. The results indicated that: (1) The streamwise velocity in vegetated areas is significantly lower than in non-vegetated areas, and the difference in flow capacity between vegetated and non-vegetated areas increases with patch coverage and fragmentation degree. (2) In the non-submerged state, the maximum Reynolds stress in the vegetated area is located at the bottom of the vegetation and is negatively correlated with patch coverage but positively correlated with fragmentation degree. In the submerged state, the maximum Reynolds stress is located near the top of the canopy and is positively correlated with both patch coverage and fragmentation degree. (3) The longitudinal turbulent kinetic energy in the vegetated area is significantly higher than in the non-vegetated area. In the non-submerged state, the turbulent kinetic energy in the vegetated area is negatively correlated with patch coverage but positively correlated with fragmentation degree. In the submerged state, the turbulent kinetic energy of the longitudinal distribution in the free layer of the vegetated area is positively correlated with patch coverage, negatively correlated with fragmentation degree, and is only reflected in the upstream vegetation area.

Resource availability enhances positive tree functional diversity effects on carbon and nitrogen accrual in natural forests

Forests harbor extensive biodiversity and act as a strong global carbon and nitrogen sink. Although enhancing tree diversity has been shown to mitigate climate change by sequestering more carbon and nitrogen in biomass and soils in manipulative experiments, it is still unknown how varying environmental gradients, such as gradients in resource availability, mediate the effects of tree diversity on carbon and nitrogen accrual in natural forests. Here, we use Canada's National Forest Inventory data to explore how the relationships between tree diversity and the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen in tree biomass and soils vary with resource availability and environmental stressors in natural forests. We find that the positive relationship between tree functional diversity (rather than species richness) and the accumulation of carbon in tree biomass strengthens with increasing light and soil nutrient availability. Moreover, the positive relationship between tree functional diversity and the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen in both organic and mineral soil horizons is more pronounced at sites with greater water and nutrient availabilities. Our results highlight that conserving and promoting functionally diverse forests in resource-rich environments could play a greater role than in resource-poor environments in enhancing carbon and nitrogen sequestration in Canada's forests.

Boreal tree species diversity increases with global warming but is reversed by extremes

Tree species diversity is essential to sustaining stable forest ecosystem functioning. However, it remains unclear how boreal tree species diversity has changed in response to climate change and how it is associated with productivity and the temporal stability of boreal forest ecosystems. By combining 5,312 field observations and 55,560 Landsat images, here we develop a framework to estimate boreal tree species diversity (represented by the Shannon diversity index, H') for the years 2000, 2010 and 2020. We document an average increase in H' by 12% from 2000 to 2020 across the boreal forests. This increase accounts for 53% of all boreal forest areas and mainly occurs in the eastern forest-boreal transition region, the Okhotsk-Manchurian taiga and the Scandinavian-Russian taiga. Tree species diversity responds positively to increasing temperatures, but the relationship is weakened for higher temperature changes, and in areas of extreme warming (>0.065 °C yr-1), a negative impact on tree species diversity is found. We further show that the observed spatiotemporal increase in diversity is significantly associated with increased productivity and temporal stability of boreal forest biomass. Our results highlight climate-warming-driven increases in boreal tree species diversity that positively affect boreal ecosystem functioning but are countered in areas of extreme warming.

Warming-Induced Vegetation Greening May Aggravate Soil Mercury Levels Worldwide

Mercury, a neurotoxic substance, circulates globally, significantly stored in soils through atmospheric deposition and plant decay. Despite being deposited, mercury can be remobilized and released into the atmosphere and water, enhancing its global cycle. Recent research suggests that climate warming may amplify the remobilization of soil mercury, facilitating its incorporation into food webs that humans exploit. However, the potential geospatial feedback of soil mercury levels in response to warming remains unclear. By leveraging up-to-date soil measurements and observation-driven models, we determined the amount of mercury stored in global 0-100 cm soils to be 4.3 Tg (interquartile range: 2.5-6.3 Tg). Furthermore, our analysis indicates that warming likely aggravates global soil mercury levels, particularly in many temperate areas in East Asia, North Europe, and North America (>20 ng g-1 increase by 2100) due to warming-induced vegetation greening. Critically, observation-driven models raise the possibility that implementing ambitious mercury-emission-control schemes alone may be insufficient to counterbalance the positive feedback of soil mercury concentration, while process-based biogeochemical modeling demonstrates consistent patterns that reinforce this concern. These findings hold broad implications; for example, such feedback may catalyze mercury remobilization in land-ocean continuums and exacerbate human risks, stressing the necessity for continued reductions in greenhouse gas and mercury emissions.

Forest carbon stocks increase with higher dominance of ectomycorrhizal trees in high latitude forests

Understanding the mechanisms controlling forest carbon accumulation is crucial for predicting and mitigating future climate change. Yet, it remains unclear whether the dominance of ectomycorrhizal (EcM) trees influences the carbon accumulation of entire forests. In this study, we analyzed forest inventory data from over 4000 forest plots across Northeast China. We find that EcM tree dominance consistently exerts a positive effect on tree, soil, and forest carbon stocks. Moreover, we observe that these positive effects are more pronounced during unfavorable climate conditions, at lower tree species richness, and during early successional stages. This underscores the potential of increasing the dominance of native EcM tree species not only to enhance carbon stocks but also to bolster resilience against climate change in high-latitude forests. Here we show that forest managers can make informed decisions to optimize carbon accumulation by considering various factors such as mycorrhizal types, climate, successional stages, and species richness.

Carbon pools in forest systems and new estimation based on an investigation of carbon sequestration

Forests, the ancient wooden giants, are both symbols of natural beauty and reservoirs of carbon stocks. The current climate crisis has created an urgent need for an in-depth study of forest ecosystems and carbon stocks. Based on forest inventory data from field surveys and four bioclimatic zones [Zone 1 (Z1, humid forest), Zone 2 (Z2, semi-humid forest), Zone 3 (Z3, semi-humid to semi-arid forest-grassland), and Zone 4 (Z4, semi-arid typical grassland)], two methods [Method 1 (M1) and Method 2 (M2)] were used to estimate carbon stocks in forest ecosystems in Shaanxi Province, China, and explored the spatial patterns of carbon pools and potential influences. The total forest ecosystem carbon pool amounted to 520.80 Tg C, of which 53.60% was stored aboveground, 17.16% belowground, and 29.24% in soil (depth of 0-10 cm). Spatially, there were marked north-south gradients in both biomass (Z2 > Z3 > Z1 > Z4) and soil organic carbon densities (Z1 > Z2 > Z3 > Z4). The differences between aboveground and belowground biomass carbon density across broadleaf, needle-leaf, and broadleaf and needle-leaf mixed forest were not pronounced, while soil organic carbon density had the order of broadleaf (18.38 Mg C/ha) > needle-leaf (11.29 Mg C/ha) > broadleaf and needle-leaf mixed forest (10.33 Mg C/ha). Under an ideal scenario that excludes external factors, mainly forest growth, the sequestration potential of forest biomass by 2032 was estimated by M1 as 85.43 Tg, and by M2 to be substantially higher at 176.21 Tg. As of 2062, M1 estimated 155.97 Tg of sequestration potential for forest biomass. The spatial patterns of forest biomass and soil carbon density were closely related to climatic factors, and these relationships allowed the spatial division into two distinct climatic regions. Moreover, biomass carbon density was significantly correlated with the normalized difference vegetation index, soil silt, and elevation. This study provides key information for promoting the strategic shift from light-green to deep-green forest systems in Shannxi Province and updates the estimation methods of forest ecosystems' carbon pools based on field surveys.

Impacts of farming activities on carbon deposition based on fine soil subtype classification

Introduction

Soil has the highest carbon sink storage in terrestrial ecosystems but human farming activities affect soil carbon deposition. In this study, land cultivated for 70 years was selected. The premise of the experiment was that the soil could be finely categorized by subtype classification. We consider that farming activities affect the soil bacterial community and soil organic carbon (SOC) deposition differently in the three subtypes of albic black soils.

Methods

Ninety soil samples were collected and the soil bacterial community structure was analysed by high-throughput sequencing. Relative changes in SOC were explored and SOC content was analysed in association with bacterial concentrations.

Results

The results showed that the effects of farming activities on SOC deposition and soil bacterial communities differed among the soil subtypes. Carbohydrate organic carbon (COC) concentrations were significantly higher in the gleying subtype than in the typical and meadow subtypes. RB41, Candidatus-Omnitrophus and Ahniella were positively correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) in gleying shallow albic black soil. Corn soybean rotation have a positive effect on the deposition of soil carbon sinks in terrestrial ecosystems.

Discussion

The results of the present study provide a reference for rational land use to maintain sustainable development and also for the carbon cycle of the earth.

Biodiversity loss reduces global terrestrial carbon storage

Natural ecosystems store large amounts of carbon globally, as organisms absorb carbon from the atmosphere to build large, long-lasting, or slow-decaying structures such as tree bark or root systems. An ecosystem's carbon sequestration potential is tightly linked to its biological diversity. Yet when considering future projections, many carbon sequestration models fail to account for the role biodiversity plays in carbon storage. Here, we assess the consequences of plant biodiversity loss for carbon storage under multiple climate and land-use change scenarios. We link a macroecological model projecting changes in vascular plant richness under different scenarios with empirical data on relationships between biodiversity and biomass. We find that biodiversity declines from climate and land use change could lead to a global loss of between 7.44-103.14 PgC (global sustainability scenario) and 10.87-145.95 PgC (fossil-fueled development scenario). This indicates a self-reinforcing feedback loop, where higher levels of climate change lead to greater biodiversity loss, which in turn leads to greater carbon emissions and ultimately more climate change. Conversely, biodiversity conservation and restoration can help achieve climate change mitigation goals.

Microbial mechanisms for improved soil phosphorus mobilization in monoculture conifer plantations by mixing with broadleaved trees

Replanting broadleaved trees in monoculture conifer plantations has been shown to improve the ecological environment. However, not much is known about the distribution properties of soil phosphate-mobilizing bacteria (PMB) under different mixed plantings or how PMB affects biometabolism-driven phosphorus (P) bioavailability. The phoD and pqqC genes serve as molecular markers of PMB because they regulate the mobilization of organic (Po) and inorganic (Pi) P. Differences in soil bioavailable P concentration, phoD- and pqqC-harboring PMB communities, and their main regulators were analyzed using biologically-based P (BBP) and high-throughput sequencing approaches after combining coniferous trees (Pinus massoniana) and five individual broadleaved trees (Bretschneidera sinensis, Michelia maudiae, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Manglietia conifera, and Camellia oleifera). The findings revealed that the contents of litter P, soil organic carbon (SOC), available Pi (CaCl2-P), and labile Po (Enzyme-P) were significantly higher in conifer-broadleaf mixed plantations than those in the monospecific Pinus massoniana plantations (PM), especially in the mixed stands with the introduction of Cercidiphyllum japonicum, Michelia maudiae, and Camellia oleifera. Conifer-broadleaf mixing had little effect on the abundance of phoD and pqqC genes but significantly altered species composition within the communities. Conifer-broadleaf mixing improved soil microbial habitat mainly by increasing the pH, increasing carbon source availability and nutrient content, decreasing exchangeable Fe3+ and Al3+ content, and decreasing the activation degrees of Fe and Al oxides in acidic soils. A small group of taxa (phoD: Bradyrhizobium, Tardiphaga, Nitratireductor, Mesorhizobium, Herbaspirillum, and Ralstonia; pqqC: Burkholderia, Variovorax, Bradyrhizobium, and Leptothrix) played a key role in the synthesis of P-related enzymes (e.g., alkaline phosphomonoesterase, ALP) and in lowering the levels of mineral-occluded (HCl-P) and chelated (Citrate-P) Pi. Overall, our findings highlight that mixing conifers and broadleaves could change the PMB communities that produce ALP and dissolve Pi to make P more bioavailable.

Functional diversity enhances dryland forest productivity under long-term climate change

Short-term experimental studies provided evidence that plant diversity increases ecosystem resilience and resistance to drought events, suggesting diversity to serve as a nature-based solution to address climate change. However, it remains unclear whether the effects of diversity are momentary or still hold over the long term in natural forests to ensure that the sustainability of carbon sinks. By analyzing 57 years of inventory data from dryland forests in Canada, we show that productivity of dryland forests decreased at an average rate of 1.3% per decade, in concert with the temporally increasing temperature and decreasing water availability. Increasing functional trait diversity from its minimum (monocultures) to maximum value increased productivity by 13%. Our results demonstrate the potential role of tree functional trait diversity in alleviating climate change impacts on dryland forests. While recognizing that nature-based climate mitigation (e.g., planting trees) can only be partial solutions, their long-term (decadal) efficacy can be improved by enhancing functional trait diversity across the forest community.

Distinct latitudinal patterns and drivers of topsoil nitrogen and phosphorus across urban forests in eastern China

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the two most important macronutrients supporting forest growth. Unprecedented urbanization has created growing areas of urban forests that provide key ecosystem services for city dwellers. However, the large-scale patterns of soil N and P content remain poorly understood in urban forests. Based on a systematic soil survey in urban forests from nine large cities across eastern China, we examined the spatial patterns and key drivers of topsoil (0-20 cm) total N content, total P content, and N:P ratio. Topsoil total N content was found to change significantly with latitude in the form of an inverted parabolic curve, while total P content showed an opposite latitudinal pattern. Variance partition analysis indicated that regional-scale patterns of topsoil total N and P contents were dominated by climatic drivers and partially regulated by time and pedogenic drivers. Conditional regression analyses showed a significant increase in topsoil total N content with lower mean annual temperature (MAT) and higher mean annual precipitation (MAP), while topsoil total P content decreased significantly with higher MAP. Topsoil total N content also increased significantly with the age of urban park and varied with pre-urban soil type, while no such effects were found for topsoil total P content. Moreover, topsoil N:P ratio showed a latitudinal pattern similar to that of topsoil total N content and also increased significantly with lower MAT and higher MAP. Our findings demonstrate distinct latitudinal trends of topsoil N and P contents and highlight a dominant role of climatic drivers in shaping the large-scale patterns of topsoil nutrients in urban forests.

A meta-analysis reveals increases in soil organic carbon following the restoration and recovery of croplands in Southwest China

In China, the Grain for Green Program (GGP) is an ambitious project to convert croplands into natural vegetation, but exactly how changes in vegetation translate into changes in soil organic carbon remains less clear. Here we conducted a meta-analysis using 734 observations to explore the effects of land recovery on soil organic carbon and nutrients in four provinces in Southwest China. Following GGP, the soil organic carbon content (SOCc) and soil organic carbon stock (SOCs) increased by 33.73% and 22.39%, respectively, compared with the surrounding croplands. Similarly, soil nitrogen increased, while phosphorus decreased. Outcomes were heterogeneous, but depended on variations in soil and environmental characteristics. Both the regional land use and cover change indicated by the landscape type transfer matrix and net primary production from 2000 to 2020 further confirmed that the GGP promoted the forest area and regional mean net primary production. Our findings suggest that the GGP could enhance soil and vegetation carbon sequestration in Southwest China and help to develop a carbon-neutral strategy.

Three decades of shade trees improve soil organic carbon pools but not methane uptake in coffee systems

The rapid expansion of coffee plantations in tropical area at the cost of natural forest may suppress the methane (CH4) uptake and change the soil fertility. However, observations on soil CH4 uptake rates and the ecological consequence studies on coffee-based plantations are sparse. The objectives of this study were to characterize the dynamics of CH4 uptake among natural forest, coffee monoculture (CM), and coffee intercropping with shade tree (CI), and to evaluate the key drivers of soil CH4 uptake. Results showed that the conversion of forest into 25-year and 34-year CM plantations significantly reduced the soil organic carbon (SOC) content by 57% and 76%, respectively, whereas CI plantation profoundly increased the SOC by 20%-76% compared with CM plantation. Although soils of forest, CM and CI functioned exclusively as CH4 sinks, the CM and CI plantations significantly decreased the ambient CH4 uptake rates by 64%-83% due to soil moisture shift and soil nitrate availability by using chemical fertilizer. Interestingly, the potential CH4 uptake of CM and CI plantations did not decrease and in some treatments, was even higher than that of the natural forest. Potential CH4 uptake showed a negative correlation with soil pH and SOC content, but a positive correlation with soil available phosphorus (AP). Collectively, although the SOC and soil pH were increased through intercropping with shade trees for decades, the inhibition of atmospheric CH4 uptake was still difficult to alleviate.

Litter decomposition and nutrient release are faster under secondary forests than under Chinese fir plantations with forest development

In terrestrial ecosystems, leaf litter is the main source of nutrients returning to the soil. Understanding how litter decomposition responds to stand age is critical for improving predictions of the effects of forest age structure on nutrient availability and cycling in ecosystems. However, the changes in this critical process with stand age remain poorly understood due to the complexity and diversity of litter decomposition patterns and drivers among different stand ages. In this study, we examined the effects of stand age on litter decomposition with two well-replicated age sequences of naturally occurring secondary forests and Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations in southern China. Our results showed that the litter decomposition rates in the secondary forests were significantly higher than those in the Chinese fir plantations of the same age, except for 40-year-old forests. The litter decomposition rate of the Chinese fir initially increased and then decreased with stand age, while that of secondary forests gradually decreased. The results of a structural equation model indicated that stand age, litter quality and microbial community were the primary factors driving nutrient litter loss. Overall, these findings are helpful for understanding the effects of stand age on the litter decomposition process and nutrient cycling in plantation and secondary forest ecosystems.

Adapting crop production to climate change and air pollution at different scales

Air pollution and climate change are tightly interconnected and jointly affect field crop production and agroecosystem health. Although our understanding of the individual and combined impacts of air pollution and climate change factors is improving, the adaptation of crop production to concurrent air pollution and climate change remains challenging to resolve. Here we evaluate recent advances in the adaptation of crop production to climate change and air pollution at the plant, field and ecosystem scales. The main approaches at the plant level include the integration of genetic variation, molecular breeding and phenotyping. Field-level techniques include optimizing cultivation practices, promoting mixed cropping and diversification, and applying technologies such as antiozonants, nanotechnology and robot-assisted farming. Plant- and field-level techniques would be further facilitated by enhancing soil resilience, incorporating precision agriculture and modifying the hydrology and microclimate of agricultural landscapes at the ecosystem level. Strategies and opportunities for crop production under climate change and air pollution are discussed.
