Physiological effects of short acute UVB treatments in Chenopodium quinoa Willd

Exploring the Physiological Multiplicity of Native Microalgae from the Ecuadorian Highland, Italian Lowland and Indoor Locations in Response to UV-B

The differential effects of UV-B on the inhibition or activation of protective mechanisms to maintain cells photosynthetically active were investigated in native microalgae. Four strains were used, including two Chlorella sorokiniana strains, F4 and LG1, isolated from a Mediterranean inland swamp and a recycled cigarette butt's substrate, respectively, and two isolates from an Ecuadorian highland lake related to Pectinodesmus pectinatus (PEC) and Ettlia pseudoalveolaris (ETI). Monocultures were exposed to acute UV-B (1.7 W m^-2) over 18 h under controlled conditions. UV-B-untreated microalgae were used as the control. Comparative physiological responses, including photosynthetic pigments, non-enzymatic antioxidants, and chlorophyll a fluorescence, were evaluated at specific time points. Results showed that UV-B significantly compromised all the physiological parameters in F4, thereby resulting in the most UV-B-sensitive strain. Contrarily, UV-B exposure did not lead to changes in the PEC physiological traits, resulting in the best UV-B-resistant strain. This could be attributed to the acclimation to high light habitat, where maintaining a constitutive phenotype (at the photosynthetic level) is strategically advantageous. Differently, LG1 and ETI at 12 h of UV-B exposure showed different UV-B responses, which is probably related to acclimation, where in LG1, the pigments were recovered, and the antioxidants were still functioning, while in ETI, the accumulation of pigments and antioxidants was increased to avoid further photodamage. Consequently, the prolonged exposure in LG1 and ETI resulted in species-specific metabolic regulation (e.g., non-enzymatic antioxidants) in order to constrain full photoinhibition under acute UV-B.

Adaptive mechanisms in quinoa for coping in stressful environments: an update

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is a grain-like, genetically diverse, highly complex, nutritious, and stress-tolerant food that has been used in Andean Indigenous cultures for thousands of years. Over the past several decades, numerous nutraceutical and food companies are using quinoa because of its perceived health benefits. Seeds of quinoa have a superb balance of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, saponins, vitamins, phenolics, minerals, phytoecdysteroids, glycine betaine, and betalains. Quinoa due to its high nutritional protein contents, minerals, secondary metabolites and lack of gluten, is used as the main food source worldwide. In upcoming years, the frequency of extreme events and climatic variations is projected to increase which will have an impact on reliable and safe production of food. Quinoa due to its high nutritional quality and adaptability has been suggested as a good candidate to offer increased food security in a world with increased climatic variations. Quinoa possesses an exceptional ability to grow and adapt in varied and contrasting environments, including drought, saline soil, cold, heat UV-B radiation, and heavy metals. Adaptations in salinity and drought are the most commonly studied stresses in quinoa and their genetic diversity associated with two stresses has been extensively elucidated. Because of the traditional wide-ranging cultivation area of quinoa, different quinoa cultivars are available that are specifically adapted for specific stress and with broad genetic variability. This review will give a brief overview of the various physiological, morphological and metabolic adaptations in response to several abiotic stresses.

UV-B Irradiation Effect on Microalgae Performance in the Remediation of Effluent Derived from the Cigarette Butt Cleaning Process

In this study, the potential of ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation to alleviate the effects of pollutants in cigarette butt wastewater (CBW) was investigated using different Chlorella sorokiniana strains (F4, R1 and LG1). Microalgae were treated with UV-B (1.7 W m⁻²) for 3 days prior to their exposure to CBW and then incubated for 4 days in the absence or presence of UV-B. UV-B-untreated microalgae were used as the control. Comparative physiological responses, including photosynthetic pigments and non-enzymatic antioxidants, as well as nicotine and nicotyrine removal, were evaluated in 7-day cultures. UV-B treatments did not negatively impact algal chlorophyll or carotenoid production. UV-B acclimation was strain-dependent, correlating with native environment adaptations and genetic constitutions. UV-B as a pretreatment had long-term positive effects on non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity. However, LG1 needed more time to readjust the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance, as it was the most UV-B-sensitive. Phenolic compounds played an important role in the antioxidant system response to UV-B, while flavonoids did not contribute to the total antioxidant capacity. Although cross-resistance between UV-B and CBW was observed in F4 and R1, only R1 showed nicotine/nicotyrine catabolism induction due to UV-B. Overall, the results suggest that UV-B activates defense pathways associated with resistance or tolerance to nicotine and nicotyrine.

Short daily ultraviolet exposure enhances intrinsic water-use efficiency and delays senescence in Micro-Tom tomato plants

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, unless present at high doses, is recognised as a regulator of plant growth and some specific processes. The present study investigated the influence of short daily UV irradiation (15min/day, 11days) on leaf gas exchange and some biochemical and molecular markers of leaf senescence (such as stomata movements, chlorophyll breakdown, anthocyanin production, senescence-associated genes) in Micro-Tom tomato plants. The UV-induced reduction of g s (stomatal conductance) during the treatment was associated with the modified expression of some genes involved in the control of stomatal movements. We hypothesise a two-step regulation of stomatal closure involving salicylic and abscisic acid hormones. The temporal changes of g s and A net (net photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate) along with the pigment behaviour, suggest a possible delay of leaf senescence in treated plants, confirmed by the expression levels of genes related to senescence such as SAG113 and DFR . The UV potential to induce a persistent partial inhibition of g s without severely affecting A net led to an increased iWUE (intrinsic water-use efficiency) during the 11-day treatment, suggesting a priming effect of short daily UV radiation towards drought conditions potentially useful in reducing the excess water use in agriculture.

Transcriptional regulation of photoprotection in dark-to-light transition-More than just a matter of excess light energy

In nature, photosynthetic organisms are exposed to different light spectra and intensities depending on the time of day and atmospheric and environmental conditions. When photosynthetic cells absorb excess light, they induce nonphotochemical quenching to avoid photodamage and trigger expression of "photoprotective" genes. In this work, we used the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to assess the impact of light intensity, light quality, photosynthetic electron transport, and carbon dioxide on induction of the photoprotective genes (LHCSR1, LHCSR3, and PSBS) during dark-to-light transitions. Induction (mRNA accumulation) occurred at very low light intensity and was independently modulated by blue and ultraviolet B radiation through specific photoreceptors; only LHCSR3 was strongly controlled by carbon dioxide levels through a putative enhancer function of CIA5, a transcription factor that controls genes of the carbon concentrating mechanism. We propose a model that integrates inputs of independent signaling pathways and how they may help the cells anticipate diel conditions and survive in a dynamic light environment.

Ultraviolet radiation causes leaf warming due to partial stomatal closure

Variation in solar ultraviolet radiation induces a wide-range of plant responses from the cellular to whole-plant scale. We demonstrate here for the first time that partial stomatal closure caused by ultraviolet radiation exposure results in significant increases in leaf temperature. Significant leaf warming in response to ultraviolet radiation was consistent in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) across different experimental approaches. In field experiments where solar ultraviolet radiation was attenuated using filters, exposure to ultraviolet radiation significantly decreased stomatal conductance and increased leaf temperature by up to 1.5°C. Using fluorescent lamps to provide ultraviolet radiation treatments, smaller but significant increases in leaf temperature due to decreases in stomatal conductance occurred in both multi-day controlled environment growth room experiments and short-term (< 2 hours) climate cabinet irradiance response experiments. We show that leaf warming due to partial stomatal closure is independent of any direct warming effects of ultraviolet radiation manipulations. We discuss the implications of ultraviolet radiation-induced warming both for horticultural crop production and understanding broader plant responses to ultraviolet radiation.

How Does Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) Respond to Phosphorus Fertilization and Irrigation Water Salinity?

Soil salinity is a major problem in arid and semi-arid regions, causing land degradation, desertification, and subsequently, food insecurity. Salt-affected soils and phosphorus (P) deficiency are the common problems in the sub-Sahara, including the Southern region of Morocco. Soil salinity limits plant growth by limiting water availability, causing a nutritional imbalance, and imparting osmotic stress in the plants. The objective of this study was to determine the positive effects of P on growth and productivity and understand the major leaf mineral nutrient content of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) cv. "ICBA Q5" irrigated with saline water. A field experiment applying three salinity (Electrical Conductivity, EC) levels of irrigation water (ECw = 5, 12, and 17 dS·m^-1) and three P fertilizer rates (0, 60, and 70 kg of P₂O₅ ha^-1) were evaluated in a split-plot design with three replications. The experiment was conducted in Foum El Oued, South of Morocco on sandy loam soil during the period of March-July 2020. The results showed that irrigation with saline water significantly reduced the final dry biomass, seed yield, harvest index, and crop water productivity of quinoa; however, P application under saline conditions minimized the effect of salinity and improved the yield. The application of 60 and 70 kg of P₂O₅ ha^-1 increased (p < 0.05) the seed yield by 29 and 51% at low salinity (5 dS·m^-1), by 16 and 2% at medium salinity (12 dS·m^-1), and by 13 and 8% at high salinity (17 dS·m^-1), respectively. The leaf Na⁺ and K⁺ content and Na⁺/K⁺ ratio increased with irrigation water salinity. However, the leaf content of Mg, Ca, Zn, and Fe decreased under high salinity. It was also found that increasing P fertilization improved the essential nutrient content and nutrient uptake. Our finding suggests that P application minimizes the adverse effects of high soil salinity and can be adopted as a coping strategy under saline conditions.

Cannabis Inflorescence Yield and Cannabinoid Concentration Are Not Increased With Exposure to Short-Wavelength Ultraviolet-B Radiation

Before ultraviolet (UV) radiation can be used as a horticultural management tool in commercial Cannabis sativa (cannabis) production, the effects of UV on cannabis should be vetted scientifically. In this study we investigated the effects of UV exposure level on photosynthesis, growth, inflorescence yield, and secondary metabolite composition of two indoor-grown cannabis cultivars: 'Low Tide' (LT) and 'Breaking Wave' (BW). After growing vegetatively for 2 weeks under a canopy-level photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of ≈225 μmol⋅m-2⋅s-1 in an 18-h light/6-h dark photoperiod, plants were grown for 9 weeks in a 12-h light/12-h dark "flowering" photoperiod under a canopy-level PPFD of ≈400 μmol⋅m-2⋅s-1. Supplemental UV radiation was provided daily for 3.5 h at UV photon flux densities ranging from 0.01 to 0.8 μmol⋅m-2⋅s-1 provided by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a peak wavelength of 287 nm (i.e., biologically-effective UV doses of 0.16 to 13 kJ⋅m-2⋅d-1). The severity of UV-induced morphology (e.g., whole-plant size and leaf size reductions, leaf malformations, and stigma browning) and physiology (e.g., reduced leaf photosynthetic rate and reduced Fv/Fm) symptoms intensified as UV exposure level increased. While the proportion of the total dry inflorescence yield that was derived from apical tissues decreased in both cultivars with increasing UV exposure level, total dry inflorescence yield only decreased in LT. The total equivalent Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) concentrations also decreased in LT inflorescences with increasing UV exposure level. While the total terpene content in inflorescences decreased with increasing UV exposure level in both cultivars, the relative concentrations of individual terpenes varied by cultivar. The present study suggests that using UV radiation as a production tool did not lead to any commercially relevant benefits to cannabis yield or inflorescence secondary metabolite composition.

Short term UV-B radiation mediated modulation of physiological traits and withanolides production in Withania coagulans (L.) Dunal under in-vitro condition

Accumulation of secondary metabolites is a key process in the growth and development of plants under different biotic/abiotic constraints. Many studies highlighted the regulatory potential of UV-B treatment towards the secondary metabolism of plants. In the present study, we examined the impact of UV-B on the physiology and secondary metabolism of Withania coagulans, which is an important ayurvedic plant with high anti-diabetic potential. Results showed that in-vitro UV-B exposure negatively influenced chlorophyll content and photosynthetic machinery. However, Fv/Fm ratio was found non-significantly altered up to 3 h UV-B exposure. The maximum lipid peroxidation level was recorded with 46.8% higher malondialdehyde content in the plants supplemented with 5 h UV-B radiation, that was indicated the oxidative stress in W. coagulans. Conversely, UV-B treatment significantly increased the plant's stress protective compounds like carotenoids, anthocyanin, phenol and proline, in W. coagulans. Free radical scavenging activity was also significantly increased ~ 18% than the control with 3 h UV-B treatment. The maximum antioxidative enzymes activities were observed with the short-term (up to 3 h) UV-B treatment. Specifically, UV-B radiation exposure significantly increased the content of withaferin A and withanolide A in W. coagulans with maximum 1.38 and 3.42-folds, respectively. Additionally, withanolides biosynthesis related genes transcript levels were found over-expressed under the response of UV-B elicitation. The acquired results suggested that short-term UV-B supplementation triggers secondary metabolism along with combating oxidative stress via improving the antioxidative defense system in W. coagulans. Also, UV-B can be used as an efficient abiotic elicitor to increase pharmaceutical compounds (withanolides) production.

Hormonal Regulation in Different Varieties of Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Exposed to Short Acute UV-B Irradiation

Increased ultraviolet-B (UV-B) due to global change can affect plant development and metabolism. Quinoa tolerates extreme conditions including high UV levels. However, the physiological mechanisms behind its abiotic stress tolerance are unclear, especially those related to UV-B. We previously demonstrated that 9.12 kJ m⁻² d⁻¹ may induce UV-B-specific signaling while 18.24 kJ m⁻² d⁻¹ promotes a UV-B-independent response. Here, we explored the effects of these UV-B doses on hormonal regulation linked to plant morphology and defense among diverse varieties. Changes in fluorescence parameters of photosystem II, flavonoids and hormones (indoleacetic acid (IAA), jasmonic acid (JA), abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA)) were surveyed under controlled conditions. Here, we showed that the sensitivity to short acute UV-B doses in varieties from different habitats is influenced by their parental lines and breeding time. UV-B sensitivity does not necessarily correlate with quinoa’s geographical distribution. The role of flavonoids in the UV-B response seems to be different depending on varieties. Moreover, we found that the extent of changes in JA and SA correlate with UV-B tolerance, while the increase of ABA was mainly related to UV-B stress.

Photosynthetic performance of five cool-season turfgrasses under UV-B exposure

Turfgrasses are monocotyledonous plants from the family Poaceae. They are widely used in green spaces and are considered one of the most economically important horticultural crops in the world. Turfgrass quality is affected by several environmental factors including light, which is involved in the quality decline of transplanted sod. Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) is an important regulator of plant growth and development. Plants growing and/or stored in protected systems, such as in sod production, may be more vulnerable to UV-B damage than those growing in the field due to acclimation. Few studies on the effects of UV-B on turfgrass physiology have been published. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of UV-B irradiation on the photosynthetic performance of five cool-season turfgrasses, namely Agrostis stolonifera L., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Poa supina Schrad., Poa pratensis L. and Lolium perenne L. Turfgrasses were exposed to 18.25 kJ m^-2 d^-1 biologically effective UV-B in growth chambers under controlled conditions. Measurements included photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchanges monitored for 16 d-UV-B treatment and after recovery. Content of pigments decreased with UV-B exposure with significant differences among the species. UV-B also affected the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency depending on the exposure period and species. Similarly, gas exchange parameters showed different effects among species after UV-B exposure compromising the assimilation of CO₂. Multivariate analysis highlighted three main clusters of species confirming their different UV-B tolerance and ability to restore PSII photochemistry after recovery, from which Festuca arundinacea resulted to be the most tolerant.

Active thermography for real time monitoring of UV-B plant interactions

Although Ultraviolet-B (UV-B)-plant interactions have been extensively analysed in the past years, many physiological aspects of the complex plant response mechanisms still need to be elucidated. Depending on the energy dose, this part of the electromagnetic spectrum can induce detrimental or beneficial effects in plant and fruit. In the present work, active thermography is used to analyse in real time the response of plants under different doses of artificial UV-B. In particular, we investigated the temporal variations of the leaf surface temperature (LST) to UV-B exposure by Long Pulse and Lock-in thermography in Epipremnum aureum and in Arabidopsis plants overexpressing or knockout mutants of UVR8, the known UV-B photoreceptor. In both cases, UV-B irradiation triggers a cooling effect, namely a thermal response characterised by a LST lower respect to the initial value. Lock-in thermography demonstrated that the cooling effect is associated with an immediate mobilization and accumulation of water in the leaves. Also, we demonstrated that thermographic responses change according to the different capability of plants to tolerate high UV-B radiation. Our study highlights new physiological and physical aspects of the plants response to UV-B radiation and, more in general, it opens new opportunities for the use of the thermography as smart tool for real-time monitoring of plant environmental interactions.

Hormone profile changes occur in roots and leaves of Micro-Tom tomato plants when exposing the aerial part to low doses of UV-B radiation

During the last decades, many studies investigated the effects of UV-B on the above-ground organs of plants, directly reached by the radiation but, to the best of our knowledges, the influence of mild UV-B doses on root hormones was not explored. Consequently, this research aimed at understanding whether low, not-stressful doses of UV-B radiation applied above-ground influenced the hormone concentrations in leaves and roots of Micro-Tom tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants during 11 days of treatment and after 3 days of recovery. In particular, ethylene, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid and indoleacetic acid were investigated. The unchanged levels of chlorophyll a and b, lutein, total xanthophylls and carotenoids, as well as the similar H₂O₂ concentration between control and treated groups suggest that the UV-B dose applied was well tolerated by the plants. Leaf ethylene emission decreased after 8 and 11 days of irradiation, while no effect was found in roots. Conversely, indoleacetic acid underwent a significant reduction in both organs, though in the roots the decrease occurred only at the end of the recovery period. Salicylic acid increased transiently in both leaves and roots on day 8. Changes in leaf and root hormone levels induced by UV-B radiation were not accompanied by marked alterations of plant architecture. The results show that irradiation of above-ground organs with low UV-B doses can affect the hormone concentrations also in roots, with likely implications in stress and acclimation responses mediated by these signal molecules.

Physiological responses of maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) plants to UV radiation in its high-altitude mountain ecosystem

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a small fraction of the solar spectrum, which acts as a key environmental modulator of plant function affecting metabolic regulation and growth. Plant species endemic to the Andes are well adapted to the harsh features of high-altitude climate, including high UV radiation. Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walpers) is a member of Brassicaceae family native to the central Andes of Peru, which grows between 3500 and 4500 m of altitude, where only highland grasses and few hardy bushes can survive. Even though maca has been the focus of recent researches, mainly due to its nutraceutical properties, knowledge regarding its adaptation mechanisms to these particular natural environmental conditions is scarce. In this study, we manipulated solar UV radiation by using UV-transmitting (Control) or blocking (UV-block) filters under field conditions (4138 m above the sea level) in order to understand the impact of UV on morphological and physiological parameters of maca crops over a complete growing season. Compared to the UV-blocking filter, under control condition a significant increase of hypocotyl weight was observed during the vegetative phase together with a marked leaf turnover. Although parameters conferring photosynthetic performance were not altered by UV, carbohydrate allocation between above and underground organs was affected. Control condition did not influence the content of secondary metabolites such as glucosinolates and phenolic compounds in hypocotyls, while some differences were observed in the rosettes. These differences were mainly related to leaf turnover and the protection of new young leaves in control plants. Altogether, the data suggest that maca plants respond to strong UV radiation at high altitudes by a coordinated remobilization and relocation of metabolites between source and sink organs via a possible UV signaling pathway.

UV-B Physiological Changes Under Conditions of Distress and Eustress in Sweet Basil

UV-B radiation has been previously reported to induce protective or deleterious effects on plants depending on the UV-B irradiation doses. To elucidate how these contrasting events are physiologically coordinated, we exposed sweet basil plants to two UV-B doses: low (8.5 kJ m-2 day-1, 30 min exposure) and high (68 kJ m-2 day-1, 4 h exposure), with the plants given both doses once continuously in a single day. Physiological tests during and after both UV-B exposures were performed by comparing the stress-induced damage and adverse effects on photosynthetic activity, the concentration and composition of photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic pigments, and stress-related hormones biosynthesis in basil plants. Our results showed that upon receiving a high UV-B dose, a severe inactivation of oxygen evolving complex (OEC) activity at the PSII donor side and irreversible PSII photodamage caused primarily by limitation of the acceptor side occurred, which overloaded protective mechanisms and finally led to the death of the plants. In contrast, low UV-B levels did not induce any signs of UV-B stress injuries. The OEC partial limitation and the inactivation of the electron transport chain allowed the activation of photoprotective mechanisms, avoiding irreversible damage to PSII. Overall results indicate the importance of a specific response mechanisms regulating photoprotection vs irreversible photoinhibition in basil that were modulated depending on the UV-B doses.

Lower levels of UV-B light trigger the adaptive responses by inducing plant antioxidant metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis in Medicago sativa seedlings

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) light, as an intrinsic part of sunlight, has more significant effects on plant growth and photomorphogenesis than other organisms due to plant's sessile growth pattern. In our studies, we have observed that alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings are very sensitive to UV-B performance. Seedlings have grown better at lower levels of UV-B light (UV-B irradiation dosage <17.35 μW cm-2 day-1), and have higher UV-resistance. However, the higher levels of UV-B light (UV-B irradiation dosage >17.35 μW cm-2 day-1) has caused severe stress injuries to alfalfa seedlings, and seriously inhibited its growth and development. Chlorophyll biosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence have been suppressed under all different dosage of UV-B light conditions. Plant antioxidant enzymes were induced by lower levels of UV-B, but greatly inhibited under higher levels of UV-B light. The contents of flavonoid compounds significantly increased under UV-B light compared with controls, and that was more significant under lower levels of UV-B than higher levels of UV-B. Therefore, we have assumed that the significant induction of plant antioxidant capacity and flavonoid excessive accumulation play a central role in alfalfa UV-B tolerance to lower levels of UV-B irradiation.

Physiological responses of Lepidium meyenii plants to ultraviolet-B radiation challenge

BACKGROUND

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation can affect several aspects ranging from plant growth to metabolic regulation. Maca is a Brassicaceae crop native to the Andes growing in above 3500 m of altitude. Although maca has been the focus mainly due to its nutraceutical properties, it remains unknown how maca plants tolerate to harsh environments, such as strong UV-B. Here, we present the first study that reports the physiological responses of maca plants to counteract and recover to repeated acute UV-B irradiation.

RESULTS

In detail, plants were daily exposed to acute UV-B irradiation followed by a recovery period under controlled conditions. The results showed that repeated acute UV-B exposures reduced biomass and photosynthetic parameters, with gradual senescence induction in exposed leaves, reduction of young leaves expansion and root growth inhibition. Negative correlation between increased UV-B and recovery was observed, with marked production of new biomass in plants treated one week or more.

CONCLUSIONS

A differential UV-B response was observed: stress response was mainly controlled by a coordinated source-sink carbon allocation, while acclimation process may require UV-B-specific systemic defense response reflected on the phenotypic plasticity of maca plants. Moreover, these differential UV-B responses were also suggested by multifactorial analysis based on biometric and physiological data.

Nitrogen availability alters flavonoid accumulation in Cyclocarya paliurus via the effects on the internal carbon/nitrogen balance

Cyclocarya paliurus has traditionally been used in medicines and nutraceutical foods. The aims of this study were to determine whether flavonoid accumulation in C. paliurus is dependent on nitrogen (N) availability and to investigate the internal C (carbon)/N balance under controlled conditions. One-year-old seedlings were grown under five increasing available N level treatments (N1-5) and were harvested throughout the 15-d experimental period. The greatest total chlorophyll amount and photosynthetic rate were achieved during the intermediate N treatments (N3 and N4). The greatest starch level was detected in N3. The total C level was relatively stable, but the total N and free amino acid levels increased, which resulted in a decreased C:N ratio. The flavonoid contents in roots and stalks decreased, while leaves showed a different pattern (peaking in N3). The flavonoid level was closely correlated with flavanone-3-hydroxylase activity, which displayed a similar variation pattern, and their levels were significantly positively correlated with those of total C and starch. Thus, the partitioning of C among primary and secondary metabolisms could be responsible for flavonoid biosynthesis and provide the basis for maintaining high yields, which increases the nutritional values of crops and medicinal plants.

Quinoa Abiotic Stress Responses: A Review

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a genetically diverse Andean crop that has earned special attention worldwide due to its nutritional and health benefits and its ability to adapt to contrasting environments, including nutrient-poor and saline soils and drought stressed marginal agroecosystems. Drought and salinity are the abiotic stresses most studied in quinoa; however, studies of other important stress factors, such as heat, cold, heavy metals, and UV-B light irradiance, are severely limited. In the last few decades, the incidence of abiotic stress has been accentuated by the increase in unpredictable weather patterns. Furthermore, stresses habitually occur as combinations of two or more. The goals of this review are to: (1) provide an in-depth description of the existing knowledge of quinoa's tolerance to different abiotic stressors; (2) summarize quinoa's physiological responses to these stressors; and (3) describe novel advances in molecular tools that can aid our understanding of the mechanisms underlying quinoa's abiotic stress tolerance.
