Palladium/palladium oxide coated electrospun fibers for wearable sweat pH-sensors

Direct conversion of CO2 to CH4 on Pd/graphdiyne single-crystalline

A major impediment to the development of the efficient use of artificial photosynthesis is the lack of highly selective and efficient photocatalysts toward the conversion of CO2 by sunlight energy at room temperature and ambient pressure. After many years of hard work, we finally completed the synthesis of graphdiyne-based palladium quantum dot catalysts containing high-density metal atom steps for selective artificial photosynthesis. The well-designed interface structure of the catalyst is composed of electron-donor and acceptor groups, resulting in the obvious incomplete charge-transfer phenomenon between graphdiyne and plasmonic metal nanostructures on the interface. These intrinsic characteristics are the origin of the high performance of the catalyst. Studies on its mechanism reveal that the synergism between 'hot electron' from local surface plasmon resonance and rapid photogenerated carrier separation at the ohmic contact interface accelerates the multi-electron reaction kinetics. The catalyst can selectively synthesize CH4 directly from CO2 and H2O with selectivity of near 100% at room temperature and pressure, and exhibits transformative performance, with an average CH4 yield of 26.2 μmol g-1 h-1 and remarkable long-term stability.

Carboxymethyl cellulose nanocolloids anchored Pd(0) nanoparticles (CMC@Pd NPs): synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application in transfer hydrogenation

Herein, we report on the preparation of novel colloidal system based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Pd nanoparticles (CMC@Pd NPs) via an ecofriendly auto-reduction process under mild conditions. In the first step, the follow-up of reduction and preparation of CMC anchored palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in aqueous solution was carried out using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Thereafter, the monodispersed colloids were fully characterized by advanced analytical, structural, and morphological techniques. Based on Scherrer equation, the as-synthesized CMC@Pd NPs crystallite size was about 10.88 nm. Accordingly, the detailed microscopic study revealed CMC nanocolloids anchored uniform distribution of Pd NPs and the presence of CMC nanofilm as protective monolayer. To the best of our knowledge, the observed nanoscale properties are reported for the first time for CMC-M system. The performance of the as-synthesized CMC@Pd nanocolloids was first investigated in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, as a model substrate, to 4-aminophenol using NaBH4 as a hydrogen source. Moreover, the catalytic reduction of various nitroarenes bearing electron withdrawing or donating substituents was carried out and monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The chemo- and regioselectivity of the catalytic reduction in presence of CMC@Pd NPs were also studied. Consequently, the prepared CMC@Pd nanocolloids exhibit remarkable activity, good heterogeneity, and higher reusability and stability for the catalytic reduction reaction under mild conditions.

A collagen-based theranostic wound dressing with visual, long-lasting infection detection capability

Continuous wound monitoring is one strategy to minimise infection severity and inform prompt variations in therapeutic care following infection diagnosis. However, integration of this functionality in therapeutic wound dressings is still challenging. We hypothesised that a theranostic dressing could be realised by integrating a collagen-based wound contact layer with previously demonstrated wound healing capability, and a halochromic dye, i.e. bromothymol blue (BTB), undergoing colour change following infection-associated pH changes (pH: 5-6 ➔ >7). Two different BTB integration strategies, i.e. electrospinning and drop-casting, were pursued to introduce long-lasting visual infection detection capability through retention of BTB within the dressing. Both systems had an average BTB loading efficiency of 99 wt% and displayed a colour change within 1 min of contact with simulated wound fluid. Drop-cast samples retained up to 85 wt% of BTB after 96 h in a near-infected wound environment, in contrast to the fibre-bearing prototypes, which released over 80 wt% of BTB over the same time period. An increase in collagen denaturation temperature (DSC) and red shifts (ATR-FTIR) suggest the formation of secondary interactions between the collagen-based hydrogel and the BTB, which are attributed to count for the long-lasting dye confinement and durable dressing colour change. Given the high L929 fibroblast viability in drop-cast sample extracts (92 %, 7 days), the presented multiscale design is simple, cell- and regulatory-friendly, and compliant with industrial scale-up. This design, therefore, offers a new platform for the development of theranostic dressings enabling accelerated wound healing and prompt infection diagnosis.

Fabrication of a Wearable Flexible Sweat pH Sensor Based on SERS-Active Au/TPU Electrospun Nanofibers

Development of wearable sensing platforms is essential for the advancement of continuous health monitoring and point-of-care testing. Eccrine sweat pH is an analyte that can be noninvasively measured and used to diagnose and aid in monitoring a wide range of physiological conditions. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers a rapid, optical technique for fingerprinting of biomarkers present in sweat. In this paper, a mechanically flexible, nanofibrous, SERS-active substrate was fabricated by a combination of electrospinning of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and Au sputter coating. This substrate was then investigated for suitability toward wearable sweat pH sensing after functionalization with two commonly used pH-responsive molecules, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), and 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPy). The developed SERS pH sensor was found to have good resolution (0.14 pH units for 4-MBA; 0.51 pH units for 4-MPy), with only 1 μL of sweat required for a measurement, and displayed no statistically significant difference in performance after 35 days (p = 0.361). Additionally, the Au/TPU nanofibrous SERS pH sensors showed fast sweat-absorbing ability as well as good repeatability and reversibility. The proposed methodology offers a facile route for the fabrication of SERS substrates which could also be used to measure a wide range of health biomarkers beyond sweat pH.

Recent developments in sensors for wearable device applications

Wearable devices are a new means of human-computer interaction with different functions, underlying principles, and forms. They have been widely used in the medical and health fields, in applications including physiological signal monitoring; sports; and environmental detection, while subtly affecting people's lives and work. Wearable sensors as functional components of wearable devices have become a research focus. In this review, we systematically summarize recent progress in the development of wearable sensors and related devices. Wearable sensors in medical health applications, according to the principle of measurement, are divided into physical and chemical quantity detection. These sensors can monitor and measure specific parameters, thereby enabling continuously improvements in the quality and feasibility of medical treatment. Through the detection of human movement, such as breathing, heartbeat, or bending, wearable sensors can evaluate body movement and monitor an individual's physical performance and health status. Wearable devices detecting aspects of the environment while maintaining high adaptability to the human body can be used to evaluate environmental quality and obtain more accurate environmental information. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide new insights and directions for the future development and broader application of wearable devices in various fields.Graphical abstract.

PANI-Based Wearable Electrochemical Sensor for pH Sweat Monitoring

Nowadays, we are assisting in the exceptional growth in research relating to the development of wearable devices for sweat analysis. Sweat is a biofluid that contains useful health information and allows a non-invasive, continuous and comfortable collection. For this reason, it is an excellent biofluid for the detection of different analytes. In this work, electrochemical sensors based on polyaniline thin films deposited on the flexible substrate polyethylene terephthalate coated with indium tin oxide were studied. Polyaniline thin films were abstained by the potentiostatic deposition technique, applying a potential of +2 V vs. SCE for 90 s. To improve the sensor performance, the electronic substrate was modified with reduced graphene oxide, obtained at a constant potential of −0.8 V vs. SCE for 200 s, and then polyaniline thin films were electrodeposited on top of the as-deposited substrate. All samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, static contact angle and FT-IR/ATR analysis to correlate the physical-chemical features with the performance of the sensors. The obtained electrodes were tested as pH sensors in the range from 2 to 8, showing good behavior, with a sensitivity of 62.3 mV/pH, very close to a Nernstian response, and a reproducibility of 3.8%. Interference tests, in the presence of competing ions, aimed to verify the selectivity, were also performed. Finally, a real sweat sample was collected, and the sweat pH was quantified with both the proposed sensor and a commercial pH meter, showing an excellent concordance.

Flexible wearable sensors - an update in view of touch-sensing

Nowadays, much of user interface is based on touch and the touch sensors have been common for displays, Internet of things (IoT) projects, or robotics. They can be found in lamps, touch screens of smartphones, or other wide arrays of applications as well. However, the conventional touch sensors, fabricated from rigid materials, are bulky, inflexible, hard, and hard-to-wear devices. The current IoT trend has made these touch sensors increasingly important when it added in the skin or clothing to affect different aspects of human life flexibly and comfortably. The paper provides an overview of the recent developments in this field. We discuss exciting advances in materials, fabrications, enhancements, and applications of flexible wearable sensors under view of touch-sensing. Therein, the review describes the theoretical principles of touch sensors, including resistive, capacitive, and piezoelectric types. Following that, the conventional and novel materials, as well as manufacturing technologies of flexible sensors are considered to. Especially, this review highlights the multidisciplinary approaches such as e-skins, e-textiles, e-healthcare, and e-control of flexible touch sensors. Finally, we summarize the challenges and opportunities that use is key to widespread development and adoption for future research.

Textile Chemical Sensors Based on Conductive Polymers for the Analysis of Sweat

Wearable textile chemical sensors are promising devices due to the potential applications in medicine, sports activities and occupational safety and health. Reaching the maturity required for commercialization is a technology challenge that mainly involves material science because these sensors should be adapted to flexible and light-weight substrates to preserve the comfort of the wearer. Conductive polymers (CPs) are a fascinating solution to meet this demand, as they exhibit the mechanical properties of polymers, with an electrical conductivity typical of semiconductors. Moreover, their biocompatibility makes them promising candidates for effectively interfacing the human body. In particular, sweat analysis is very attractive to wearable technologies as perspiration is a naturally occurring process and sweat can be sampled non-invasively and continuously over time. This review discusses the role of CPs in the development of textile electrochemical sensors specifically designed for real-time sweat monitoring and the main challenges related to this topic.

Wearable strain sensor for real-time sweat volume monitoring

Reliably monitoring sweat volume has attracted much attention due to its important role in the assessment of physiological health conditions and the prevention of dehydration. Here, we present the first example of wearable strain sensor for real-time sweat volume monitoring. Such sweat volume monitoring sensor is simply fabricated via embedding strain sensing fabric in super-absorbent hydrogels, the hydrogels can wick sweat up off the skin surface to swell and then trigger the strain sensing fabrics response. This sensor can realize real-time detection of sweat volume (0.15-700 μL), shows excellent repeatability and stability against movement or light interference, reliability in the non-pathological range (pH: 4-9 and salinity: 0-100 mM NaCl) in addition. Such sensor combing swellable hydrogels with strain sensing fabrics provides a novel measurement method of wearable devices for sweat volume monitoring.

Synthesis of Core-Double Shell Nylon-ZnO/Polypyrrole Electrospun Nanofibers

Core–double shell nylon-ZnO/polypyrrole electrospun nanofibers were fabricated by combining three straightforward methods (electrospinning, sol–gel synthesis and electrodeposition). The hybrid fibrous organic–inorganic nanocomposite was obtained starting from freestanding nylon 6/6 nanofibers obtained through electrospinning. Nylon meshes were functionalized with a very thin, continuous ZnO film by a sol–gel process and thermally treated in order to increase its crystallinity. Further, the ZnO coated networks were used as a working electrode for the electrochemical deposition of a very thin, homogenous polypyrrole layer. X-ray diffraction measurements were employed for characterizing the ZnO structures while spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR and Raman were employed for describing the polypyrrole layer. An elemental analysis was performed through X-ray microanalysis, confirming the expected double shell structure. A detailed micromorphological characterization through FESEM and TEM assays evidenced the deposition of both organic and inorganic layers. Highly transparent, flexible due to the presence of the polymer core and embedding a semiconducting heterojunction, such materials can be easily tailored and integrated in functional platforms with a wide range of applications.

Wearable piezoelectric mass sensor based on pH sensitive hydrogels for sweat pH monitoring

Colorimetric and electrochemical (bio)sensors are commonly employed in wearable platforms for sweat monitoring; nevertheless, they suffer from low stability of the sensitive element. In contrast, mass-(bio)sensors are commonly used for analyte detection at laboratory level only, due to their rigidity. To overcome these limitations, a flexible mass-(bio)sensor for sweat pH sensing is proposed. The device exploits the flexibility of piezoelectric AlN membranes fabricated on a polyimide substrate combined to the sensitive properties of a pH responsive hydrogel based on PEG-DA/CEA molecules. A resonant frequency shift is recorded due to the hydrogel swelling/shrinking at several pH. Our device shows a responsivity of about 12 kHz/pH unit when measured in artificial sweat formulation in the pH range 3–8. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that hydrogel mass variations are sensed by a flexible resonator, fostering the development of a new class of compliant and wearable devices.

Flexible potentiometric pH sensors for wearable systems

There is a growing demand for developing wearable sensors that can non-invasively detect the signs of chronic diseases early on to possibly enable self-health management. Among these the flexible and stretchable electrochemical pH sensors are particularly important as the pH levels influence most chemical and biological reactions in materials, life and environmental sciences. In this review, we discuss the most recent developments in wearable electrochemical potentiometric pH sensors, covering the key topics such as (i) suitability of potentiometric pH sensors in wearable systems; (ii) designs of flexible potentiometric pH sensors, which may vary with target applications; (iii) materials for various components of the sensor such as substrates, reference and sensitive electrode; (iv) applications of flexible potentiometric pH sensors, and (v) the challenges relating to flexible potentiometric pH sensors.
