Root water uptake and its pathways across the root: quantification at the cellular scale

Multicellularity has emerged multiple times in evolution, enabling groups of cells to share a living space and reducing the burden of solitary tasks. While unicellular organisms exhibit individuality and independence, cooperation among cells in multicellular organisms brings specialization and flexibility. However, multicellularity also necessitates intercellular dependence and relies on intercellular communication. In plants, this communication is facilitated by plasmodesmata: intercellular bridges that allow the direct (cytoplasm-to-cytoplasm) transfer of information between cells. Plasmodesmata transport essential molecules that regulate plant growth, development, and stress responses. They are embedded in the extracellular matrix but exhibit flexibility, adapting intercellular flux to meet the plant's needs.In this review, we delve into the formation and functionality of plasmodesmata and examine the capacity of the plant communication network to respond to developmental and environmental cues. We illustrate how environmental pressure shapes cellular interactions and aids the plant in adapting its growth.

Xylooligosaccharides Enhance Lettuce Root Morphogenesis and Growth Dynamics

Enhancing root development is pivotal for boosting crop yield and augmenting stress resilience. In this study, we explored the regulatory effects of xylooligosaccharides (XOSs) on lettuce root growth, comparing their impact with that of indole-3-butyric acid potassium salt (IBAP). Treatment with XOS led to a substantial increase in root dry weight (30.77%), total root length (29.40%), volume (21.58%), and surface area (25.44%) compared to the water-treated control. These enhancements were on par with those induced by IBAP. Comprehensive phytohormone profiling disclosed marked increases in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), zeatin riboside (ZR), methyl jasmonate (JA-ME), and brassinosteroids (BRs) following XOS application. Through RNA sequencing, we identified 3807 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the roots of XOS-treated plants, which were significantly enriched in pathways associated with manganese ion homeostasis, microtubule motor activity, and carbohydrate metabolism. Intriguingly, approximately 62.7% of the DEGs responsive to XOS also responded to IBAP, underscoring common regulatory mechanisms. However, XOS uniquely influenced genes related to cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis, as well as plant hormone signal transduction, hinting at novel mechanisms of stress tolerance. Prominent up-regulation of genes encoding beta-glucosidase and beta-fructofuranosidase highlights enhanced carbohydrate metabolism as a key driver of XOS-induced root enhancement. Collectively, these results position XOS as a promising, sustainable option for agricultural biostimulation.

Mechanical resistance of the environment affects root hair growth and nucleus dynamics

Root hair (RH) cells are important for the growth and survival of seedlings. They favor plant-microbe interactions and nutrients uptake. When invading the soil, RH cells have to penetrate a dense medium exhibiting a variety of physical properties, such as mechanical resistance, that impact the growth and survival of plants. Here we investigate the effect of the mechanical resistance of the culture medium on RH-physical and phenotypical parameters such as length, time, and speed of growth. We also analyze the impact of the environment on nuclear dynamics. We show that the RH growth rate and the nucleus speed decrease similarly as mechanical resistance increases while the time of growth of RH cells is invariable. Moreover, during RH growth, the nucleus-to-tip distance was found to decrease when the stiffness of the environment was increased. Along this line, using Latrunculin B treatment in liquid growth media, we could internally slow down RH growth to reach speeds similar to those observed in stiff solid media while the nucleus-to-tip distance was only slightly affected, supporting thus the idea of a specific effect of mechanical resistance of the environment on nucleus dynamics.

Water for agriculture: more crop per drop

Global crop production in agriculture depends on water availability. Future scenarios predict increasing occurrence of flash floods and rapidly developing droughts accompanied by heatwaves in humid regions that rely on rain-fed agriculture. It is challenging to maintain high crop yields, even in arid and drought-prone regions that depend on irrigation. The average water demand of crops varies significantly, depending on plant species, development stage, and climate. Most crops, such as maize and wheat, require relatively more water during the vegetative phase compared to the ripening phase. In this review, we explain WUE and options to improve water use and thus crop yield. Nutrient management might represent another possibility to manipulate water uptake and use by plants. An emerging topic involves agroforest co-cultivation, where trees in the system facilitate water transfer through hydraulic lift, benefiting neighbouring crops. Other options to enhance crop yield per water use are discussed.

Who made the noise? Systematic approach for the assessment of neutron imaging scintillators

We propose a method to analyze the characteristics of scintillator screens for neutron imaging applications. Using calculations based on the theory of cascaded linear steps as well as experimental measurements, we compared the characteristics of different lithium- and gadolinium-based scintillator screens. Our results show that, despite their much lower light output, gadolinium-based scintillators outperform lithium-based scintillators in terms of noise characteristics for a variety of imaging setups. However, the relative performance of scintillator screens is highly dependent on the other setup characteristics such as the beam spectrum, field of view, used optical lens and size of the camera sensor. Consequently, the selection of the best scintillator screen - as well as the scintillator characteristics assessment in new developments - requires a systematic consideration of all these elements, as enabled by the framework presented here.

Towards portable MRI in the plant sciences

Plant physiology and structure are constantly changing according to internal and external factors. The study of plant water dynamics can give information on these changes, as they are linked to numerous plant functions. Currently, most of the methods used to study plant water dynamics are either invasive, destructive, or not easily accessible. Portable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a field undergoing rapid expansion and which presents substantial advantages in the plant sciences. MRI permits the non-invasive study of plant water content, flow, structure, stress response, and other physiological processes, as a multitude of information can be obtained using the method, and portable devices make it possible to take these measurements in situ, in a plant's natural environment. In this work, we review the use of such devices applied to plants in climate chambers, greenhouses or in their natural environments. We also compare the use of portable MRI to other methods to obtain the same information and outline its advantages and disadvantages.

The effect of root hairs on root water uptake is determined by root-soil contact and root hair shrinkage

The effect of root hairs on water uptake remains controversial. In particular, the key root hair and soil parameters that determine their importance have been elusive. We grew maize plants (Zea mays) in microcosms and scanned them using synchrotron-based X-ray computed microtomography. By means of image-based modelling, we investigated the parameters determining the effectiveness of root hairs in root water uptake. We explicitly accounted for rhizosphere features (e.g. root-soil contact and pore structure) and took root hair shrinkage of dehydrated root hairs into consideration. Our model suggests that > 85% of the variance in root water uptake is explained by the hair-induced increase in root-soil contact. In dry soil conditions, root hair shrinkage reduces the impact of hairs substantially. We conclude that the effectiveness of root hairs on root water uptake is determined by the hair-induced increase in root-soil contact and root hair shrinkage. Although the latter clearly reduces the effect of hairs on water uptake, our model still indicated facilitation of water uptake by root hairs at soil matric potentials from -1 to -0.1 MPa. Our findings provide new avenues towards a mechanistic understanding of the role of root hairs on water uptake.

Correlative study of liquid in human bone by 3D neutron microscopy and lab-based X-ray μCT

Liquid plays an important role in bone that has a complex 3D hierarchical pore structure. However, liquid (water) is difficult to discern from e.g. an organic matrix by X-ray imaging. Therefore, we use a correlative approach using both high resolution X-ray and neutron imaging. Human femoral bone with liquid adsorbed into some of the pores was imaged with both the Neutron Microscope at the ICON beamline, SINQ at PSI, and by lab-based μCT using 2.7 μm voxel size. Segmentation of the two datasets showed that, even though the liquid was clearly distinguishable in the neutron data and not in the X-ray data, it remained challenging to segment it from bone due to overlaps of peaks in the gray level histograms. In consequence, segmentations from X-ray and neutron data varied significantly. To address this issue, the segmented X-ray porosities was overlaid on the neutron data, making it possible to localize the liquid in the vascular porosities of the bone sample and use the neutron attenuation to identify it as H2O. The contrast in the neutron images was lowered slightly between the bone and the liquid compared to the bone and the air. This correlative study shows that the complementary use of X-rays and neutrons is very favorable, since H2O is very distinct in the neutron data, while D2O, H2O, and organic matter can barely be distinguished from air in the X-ray data.

Turning up the volume: How root branching adaptive responses aid water foraging

Access to water is critical for all forms of life. Plants primarily access water through their roots. Root traits such as branching are highly sensitive to water availability, enabling plants to adapt their root architecture to match soil moisture distribution. Lateral root adaptive responses hydropatterning and xerobranching ensure new branches only form when roots are in direct contact with moist soil. Root traits are also strongly influenced by atmospheric humidity, where a rapid drop leads to a promotion of root growth and branching. The plant hormones auxin and/or abscisic acid (ABA) play key roles in regulating these adaptive responses. We discuss how these signals are part of a novel "water-sensing" mechanism that couples hormone movement with hydrodynamics to orchestrate root branching responses.

Recent developments, applications and challenges for carbon quantum dots as a photosynthesis enhancer in agriculture

Since the world's population is expanding, mankind may be faced with a huge dilemma in the future, which is food scarcity. The situation can be mitigated by employing sustainable cutting-edge agricultural methods to maintain the food supply chain. In recent years, carbon quantum dots (CQD), a member of the well-known carbon-based nanomaterials family, have given rise to a new generation of technologies that have the potential to revolutionise horticulture and agriculture research. CQD has drawn much attention from the research community in agriculture owing to their remarkable properties such as good photoluminescence behaviour, high biocompatibility, photo-induced electron transfer, low cost, and low toxicity. These unique properties have led CQD to become a promising material to increase plant growth and yield in the agriculture field. This review paper highlights the recent advances of CQD application in plant growth and photosynthesis rate at different concentrations, with a focus on CQD uptake and translocation, as well as electron transfer mechanism. The toxicity and biocompatibility studies of CQD, as well as industrial scale applications of CQD for agriculture are discussed. Finally, the current challenges of the present and future perspectives in this agriculture research are presented.

Diurnal changes in apoplast bypass flow of water and ions in salt-stressed wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The aim of the present study was to quantify the contribution of apoplastic bypass flow to the uptake of water and salt across the root cylinder of wheat and barley during day and night. Plants were grown on hydroponics until they were 14-17 days old and then analysed over a single day (16 h) or night (8 h) period while being exposed to different concentrations of NaCl (50, 100, 150 and 200 mM NaCl). Exposure to salt started just before the experiment (short-term stress) or had started 6d before (longer-term stress). Bypass flow was quantified using the apoplastic tracer dye 8-hydroxy-1,3,6-pyrenesulphonic acid (PTS). The percent contribution of bypass flow to root water uptake increased in response to salt stress and during the night and amounted to up to 4.4%. Bypass flow across the root cylinder of Na+ and Cl- made up 2%-12% of the net delivery of these ions to the shoot; this percentage changed little (wheat) or decreased (barley) during the night. Changes in the contribution of bypass flow to the net uptake of water, Na+ and Cl- in response to salt stress and day/night are the combined result of changes in xylem tension, the contribution of alternative cell-to-cell flow path and the requirement to generate xylem osmotic pressure.

Linking drivers of plant per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) uptake to agricultural land management decisions

Widespread contamination of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) in agricultural areas is largely attributed to the application of sewage sludge in which the PFAS can be concentrated. This creates a pathway for these contaminants to enter the food chain and, by extension, causes human health and economic concerns. One barrier to managing land with PFAS contamination is the variation in reported plant uptake levels across studies. A review of the literature suggests that the variation in plant uptake is influenced by a host of factors including the composition of PFAS chemicals, soil conditions, and plant physiology. Factors include (1) the chemical components of the PFAS such as the end group and chain length; (2) drivers of soil sorption such as the presence of soil organic matter (SOM), multivalent cation concentration, pH, soil type, and micropore volume; and (3) crop physiological features such as fine root area, percentage of mature roots, and leaf blade area. The wide range of driving factors highlights a need for research to elucidate these mechanisms through additional experiments as well as collect more data to support refined models capable of predicting PFAS uptake in a range of cropping systems. A conceptual framework presented here links drivers of plant PFAS uptake found in the literature to phytomanagement approaches such as modified agriculture or phytoremediation to provide decision support to land managers.

Effects of Rhizosphere Microorganisms on the Uptake and Translocation of Organic Compounds in Maize Seedlings

The plant root is a key pathway to absorb insecticides from soil and is colonized by beneficial and pathogenic microbial communities. Our study demonstrated that colonizing roots by nitrogen-fixing bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri and pathogenic Fusarium graminearum and Pythium ultimum increased the uptake of insecticides into maize roots from soil. An alteration in the permeability of root cells contributed to this increased uptake. For the subsequent root-to-shoot translocation, the relationship between translocation and log P of the compound satisfied a Gaussian distribution. Relatively beneficial P. stutzeri can promote maize seedling growth and increase translocation, whereas Fusarium and Pythium pathogens can retard the seedling growth and reduce the translocation. Furthermore, the relationship between the concentration difference (difference of an insecticide from inoculation treatment to control) and log P also showed a Gaussian distribution. The maximum concentration difference from the Gaussian equation can be applied to assess the capacity of rhizosphere microorganisms to influence translocation.

Plant water uptake modelling: added value of cross-disciplinary approaches

In recent years, research interest in plant water uptake strategies has rapidly increased in many disciplines, such as hydrology, plant ecology and ecophysiology. Quantitative modelling approaches to estimate plant water uptake and spatiotemporal dynamics have significantly advanced through different disciplines across scales. Despite this progress, major limitations, for example, predicting plant water uptake under drought or drought impact at large scales, remain. These are less attributed to limitations in process understanding, but rather to a lack of implementation of cross-disciplinary insights into plant water uptake model structure. The main goal of this review is to highlight how the four dominant model approaches, that is, Feddes approach, hydrodynamic approach, optimality and statistical approaches, can be and have been used to create interdisciplinary hybrid models enabling a holistic system understanding that, among other things, embeds plant water uptake plasticity into a broader conceptual view of soil-plant feedbacks of water, nutrient and carbon cycling, or reflects observed drought responses of plant-soil feedbacks and their dynamics under, that is, drought. Specifically, we provide examples of how integration of Bayesian and hydrodynamic approaches might overcome challenges in interpreting plant water uptake related to different travel and residence times of different plant water sources or trade-offs between root system optimization to forage for water and nutrients during different seasons and phenological stages.

Application of Green-enhanced Nano-lantern as a bioluminescent ratiometric indicator for measurement of Arabidopsis thaliana root apoplastic fluid pH

Plant root absorbs water and nutrients from the soil, and the root apoplastic fluid (AF) is an important intermediate between cells and the surrounding environment. The acid growth theory suggests that an acidic AF is needed for cell wall expansion during root growth. However, technical limitations have precluded the quantification of root apoplastic fluid pH (AF-pH). Here, we used Green-enhanced Nano-lantern (GeNL), a chimeric protein of the luciferase NanoLuc (Nluc) and the green fluorescent protein mNeonGreen (mNG), as a ratiometric pH indicator based on the pH dependency of bioluminescence resonance energy transfer efficiency from Nluc to mNG. Luminescence spectrum of GeNL changed reciprocally from pH 4.5 to 7.5, with a pK_a of 5.5. By fusing GeNL to a novel signal peptide from Arabidopsis thaliana Cellulase 1, we localised GeNL in A. thaliana AF. We visualised AF dynamics at subcellular resolution over 30 min and determined flow velocity in the maturation zone to be 0.97± 0.06 μm/s. We confirmed that the developing root AF is acidic in the pH range of 5.1-5.7, suggesting that the AF-pH is tightly regulated during root elongation. These results support the acid growth theory and provide evidence for AF-pH maintenance despite changes in ambient pH.

Two-Phase Conceptual Framework of Phosphatase Activity and Phosphorus Bioavailability

The activity of extracellular phosphatases is a dynamic process controlled by both plant roots and microorganisms, which is responsible for the mineralization of soil phosphorus (P). Plants regulate the availability of soil P through the release of root mucilage and the exudation of low-molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs). Mucilage increases soil hydraulic conductivity as well as pore connectivity, both of which are associated with increased phosphatase activity. The LMWOAs, in turn, stimulate the mineralization of soil P through their synergistic effects of acidification, chelation, and exchange reactions. This article reviews the catalytic properties of extracellular phosphatases and their interactions with the rhizosphere interfaces. We observed a biphasic effect of root metabolic products on extracellular phosphatases, which notably altered their catalytic mechanism. In accordance with the proposed conceptual framework, soil P is acquired by both plants and microorganisms in a coupled manner that is characterized by the exudation of their metabolic products. Due to inactive or reduced root exudation, plants recycle P through adsorption on the soil matrix, thereby reducing the rhizosphere phosphatase activity. The two-phase conceptual framework might assist in understanding P-acquisition (substrate turnover) and P-restoration (phosphatase adsorption by soil) in various terrestrial ecosystems.

The Effects of Rhizosphere Inoculation with Pseudomonas mandelii on Formation of Apoplast Barriers, HvPIP2 Aquaporins and Hydraulic Conductance of Barley

Pseudomonas mandelii strain IB-Ki14 has recently been shown to strengthen the apoplastic barriers of salt-stressed plants, which prevents the entry of toxic sodium. It was of interest to find out whether the same effect manifests itself in the absence of salinity and how this affects the hydraulic conductivity of barley plants. Berberine staining confirmed that the bacterial treatment enhanced the deposition of lignin and suberin and formation of Casparian bands in the roots of barley plants. The calculation of hydraulic conductance by relating transpiration to leaf water potential showed that it did not decrease in bacteria-treated plants. We hypothesized that reduced apoplastic conductivity could be compensated by the higher conductivity of the water pathway across the membranes. This assumption was confirmed by the results of the immunolocalization of HvPIP2;5 aquaporins with specific antibodies, showing their increased abundance around the areas of the endodermis and exodermis of bacteria-treated plants. The immunolocalization with antibodies against auxins and abscisic acid revealed elevated levels of these hormones in the roots of plants treated with bacteria. This root accumulation of hormones is likely to be associated with the ability of Pseudomonas mandelii IB-Ki14 to synthesize these hormones. The involvement of abscisic acid in the control of aquaporin abundance and auxins—in the regulation of and formation of apoplast barriers—is discussed.

Label-free quantitative proteomics of maize roots from different root zones provides insight into proteins associated with enhance water uptake

Background

Maize is one of the most important food crops worldwide. Roots play important role in maize productivity through water and nutrient uptake from the soil. Improving maize root traits for efficient water uptake will help to optimize irrigation and contribute to sustainable maize production. Therefore, we investigated the protein profiles of maize cv. Anyu308 root system divided into Upper root zone (UR), Middle root (MR), and Lower root (LR), by label free quantitative shotgun proteomic approach (LFQ). The aim of our study was to identify proteins and mechanisms associated with enhanced water uptake in different maize root zones under automatic irrigation system.

Results

At field capacity, MR had the highest water uptake than the UR and LR. We identified a total of 489 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) by pairwise comparison of MR, LR, and UR. Cluster analysis of DAPs revealed MR and UR had similar protein abundance patterns different from LR. More proteins were differentially abundant in MR/UR compared to LR/MR and LR/UR. Comparisons of protein profiles indicate that the DAPs in MR increased in abundance, compared to UR and LR which had more downregulated DAPs. The abundance patterns, functional category, and pathway enrichment analyses highlight chromatin structure and dynamics, ribosomal structures, polysaccharide metabolism, energy metabolism and transport, induction of water channels, inorganic ion transport, intracellular trafficking, and vesicular transport, and posttranslational modification as primary biological processes related to enhanced root water uptake in maize. Specifically, the abundance of histones, ribosomal proteins, and aquaporins, including mitochondrion electron transport proteins and the TCA cycle, underpinned MR’s enhanced water uptake. Furthermore, proteins involved in folding and vascular transport supported the radial transport of solute across cell membranes in UR and MR. Parallel reaction monitoring analysis was used to confirmed profile of the DAPs obtained by LFQ-based proteomics.

Conclusion

The list of differentially abundant proteins identified in MR are interesting candidates for further elucidation of their role in enhanced water uptake in maize root. Overall, the current results provided an insight into the mechanisms of maize root water uptake.

Uptake and translocation of triadimefon by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in hydroponics and soil conditions

Residual pesticides in soil may be taken in by plants and thus have a risk for plant growth and food safety. In this study, uptake of triadimefon and its subsequent translocation and accumulation were investigated with wheat as model plants. The results from hydroponics indicated that triadimefon was absorbed by wheat roots mainly through apoplastic pathway and predominantly distributed into the water soluble fractions (66.7-76.0%). After being uptaken by roots, triadimefon was easily translocated upward to wheat shoots and leaves. Interestingly, triadimefon in leaves was mainly distributed in the soluble fraction by 52.5% at the beginning, and gradually transferred into the cell wall by 47.2% at equilibrium. The uptake of triadimefon from soils by wheat plants was similar to that in hydroponics. Its accumulation were mainly governed by adsorption of the fungicide onto soils, and positively correlated with its concentration in in situ pore water (C_IPW). Thus, C_IPW can be suitable for predicting the uptake of triadimefon by wheat from soils. Accordingly, uptake of triadimefon by wheat was predicted well by using the partition-limited model. Our study provides valuable information for guiding the practical application and safety evaluation of triadimefon.

Experimental and conceptual approaches to root water transport

BACKGROUND

Root water transport, which critically contributes to the plant water status and thereby plant productivity, has been the object of extensive experimental and theoretical studies. However, root systems represent an intricate assembly of cells in complex architectures, including many tissues at distinct developmental stages. Our comprehension of where and how molecular actors integrate their function in order to provide the root with its hydraulic properties is therefore still limited.

SCOPE

Based on current literature and prospective discussions, this review addresses how root water transport can be experimentally measured, what is known about the underlying molecular actors, and how elementary water transport processes are scaled up in numerical/mathematical models.

CONCLUSIONS

The theoretical framework and experimental procedures on root water transport that are in use today have been established a few decades ago. However, recent years have seen the appearance of new techniques and models with enhanced resolution, down to a portion of root or to the tissue level. These advances pave the way for a better comprehension of the dynamics of water uptake by roots in the soil.

The significance of ion-exchange properties of plant root cell walls for nutrient and water uptake by plants

This review examines the key aspects of ion exchange and diffusion in plant root cell walls and the implications of these processes for the uptake of mineral nutrients and water under both normal and adverse environmental conditions. The data available to date shows that the ion-exchange properties of plant root cell walls are influenced by the plant age and growth conditions, and also vary between species. The cell wall volume and its ability to swell, which regulate the hydraulic conductivity of the cell wall, are determined by the pH and ionic strength of the external solution. It is concluded that the analysis of physico-chemical properties of plant cell wall is an important step in the understanding of the complex processes of water and nutrient uptake.

Three-dimensional in vivo analysis of water uptake and translocation in maize roots by fast neutron tomography

Root water uptake is an essential process for terrestrial plants that strongly affects the spatiotemporal distribution of water in vegetated soil. Fast neutron tomography is a recently established non-invasive imaging technique capable to capture the 3D architecture of root systems in situ and even allows for tracking of three-dimensional water flow in soil and roots. We present an in vivo analysis of local water uptake and transport by roots of soil-grown maize plants-for the first time measured in a three-dimensional time-resolved manner. Using deuterated water as tracer in infiltration experiments, we visualized soil imbibition, local root uptake, and tracked the transport of deuterated water throughout the fibrous root system for a day and night situation. This revealed significant differences in water transport between different root types. The primary root was the preferred water transport path in the 13-days-old plants while seminal roots of comparable size and length contributed little to plant water supply. The results underline the unique potential of fast neutron tomography to provide time-resolved 3D in vivo information on the water uptake and transport dynamics of plant root systems, thus contributing to a better understanding of the complex interactions of plant, soil and water.

Temporal offset between precipitation and water uptake of Mediterranean pine trees varies with elevation and season

For climate models that use paleo-environment data to predict future climate change, tree-ring isotope variations are one important archive for the reconstruction of paleo-hydrological conditions. Due to the rather complicated pathway of water, starting from precipitation until its uptake by trees and the final incorporation of its components into tree-ring cellulose, a closer inspection of seasonal variations of tree water uptake is important. In this study, branch and needle samples of two pine species (Pinus pinaster and Pinus nigra subsp. laricio) and several water compartments (precipitation, creek, soil) were sampled over a two-year period and analyzed for the temporal variations of their oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁸O and δ²H) at five sites over an elevation gradient from sea level to around 1600 m a.s.l. on the Mediterranean island of Corsica (France). A new model was established to disentangle temporal relationships of source water uptake of trees. It uses a calculation method that incorporates the two processes mostly expected to affect source water composition: mixing of waters and evaporation. The model results showed that the temporal offset from precipitation to water uptake is not constant and varies with elevation and season. Overall, seasonal source water origin was shown to be dominated by precipitation from autumn and spring. While autumn precipitation was a more important water source for trees growing at mid- (~800-1000 m a.s.l) and high-elevation (~1600 m a.s.l.) sites, trees at coastal sites mostly took up water from late winter and spring. These findings show that predicted decreases in precipitation amounts during the wet season in the Mediterranean can have strong impacts on water availability for pine trees, especially at higher elevations.

Root secondary growth: an unexplored component of soil resource acquisition

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Despite recent progress in elucidating the molecular basis of secondary growth (cambial growth), the functional implications of this developmental process remain poorly understood. Targeted studies exploring how abiotic and biotic factors affect this process, as well as the relevance of secondary growth to fitness of annual dicotyledonous crop species under stress, are almost entirely absent from the literature. Specifically, the physiological role of secondary growth in roots has been completely neglected yet entails a unique array of implications for plant performance that are distinct from secondary growth in shoot tissue.

SCOPE

Since roots are directly responsible for soil resource capture, understanding of the fitness landscape of root phenotypes is important in both basic and applied plant biology. Interactions between root secondary growth, edaphic conditions and soil resource acquisition may have significant effects on plant fitness. Our intention here is not to provide a comprehensive review of a sparse and disparate literature, but rather to highlight knowledge gaps, propose hypotheses and identify opportunities for novel and agriculturally relevant research pertaining to secondary growth of roots. This viewpoint: (1) summarizes evidence from our own studies and other published work; (2) proposes hypotheses regarding the fitness landscape of secondary growth of roots in annual dicotyledonous species for abiotic and biotic stress; and (3) highlights the importance of directing research efforts to this topic within an agricultural context.

CONCLUSIONS

Secondary growth of the roots of annual dicots has functional significance with regards to soil resource acquisition and transport, interactions with soil organisms and carbon sequestration. Research on these topics would contribute significantly toward understanding the agronomic value of secondary growth of roots for crop improvement.
