Abstract
Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is in urgent need of a second-line or later-line treatment strategy. We aimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of additional anlotinib, specifically anlotinib in combination with immunotherapy, in patients with PDAC who have failed first-line therapy. Methods Patients with pathological diagnosis of PDAC were additionally treated with anlotinib, and some patients were treated with anti-PD-1 agents at the same time, which could be retrospectively analyzed. The efficacy and safety of additional anlotinib were evaluated. Results A total of 23 patients were included. In patients treated with additional anlotinib, the overall median progression-free survival (PFS) was 1.8 months and the median overall survival (OS) was 6.3 months, regardless of anti-PD-1 agents. Among patients receiving additional anlotinib in combination with anti-PD-1 agents, median PFS and OS were 1.8 and 6.5 months, respectively. Adverse events (AEs) were observed in 16 patients (69.6%). In patients treated with additional anlotinib, the majority of AEs were grade 1-3. Univariate analysis revealed that patients with baseline red blood cell distribution width (RDW) <14% treated with additional anlotinib plus anti-PD-1 agents had significantly longer OS than patients with baseline RDW ≥14% (p = 0.025). Patients with additional anlotinib plus anti-PD-1 agents as second-line therapy had a longer OS than those treated as later-line therapy (p = 0.012). Multivariate analysis showed that baseline RDW was the only independent risk factor for OS (p = 0.042). Conclusion The combination of anlotinib and immunotherapy represents an effective add-on therapy with tolerable AEs as second- or later-line therapy in patients with PDAC, particularly in patients with baseline RDW <14%.

Abstract
PURPOSE Investigating the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) and all-cause mortality in patients with breast cancer, to evaluate the potential clinical prognostic value of RDW. METHODS Based on the RDW index, patients with breast cancer in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-IV) database were categorized into quartiles. The primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality from all causes during the first six months, the first year, and the first three years. Cox hazards regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were developed to investigate the effects of RDW on primary outcomes. RESULTS The study included 939 patients (female). The 6-month, 1-year, and 3-year mortality rates were 14.0%, 21.4%, and 28.4%, respectively. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses demonstrated that RDW exhibited an autonomous association with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. After adjusting for confounders, higher RDW quartiles were significantly associated with 6-month mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 3.197; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.745-5.762; P < 0.001), 1-year mortality (adjusted HR, 2.978; 95% CI, 1.867-4.748; P < 0.001), and 3-year mortality (adjusted HR, 2.526; 95% CI, 1.701-3.750; P < 0.001). The RCS curves demonstrated that high RDW (> 14.6) was associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality. Subgroup analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in the interactions between the subgroups. CONCLUSION The study revealed a highly pronounced relationship between RDW and overall mortality, indicating its potential as an autonomous prognostic factor for increased mortality among patients with breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various hematologic parameters have been proposed as prognostic factors in rectal cancer management, but data are conflicting and unclear. This study is designed to investigate the prognostic factor capability of preoperative hematologic parameters with postoperative morbidities and mortality in rectal cancer patients undergoing curative resection. METHODS All 200 consecutive rectal cancer patients diagnosed at Ghaem University Hospital from 2017 to 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and machine learning (ML) algorithms of Random Forest, Recursive Feature Elimination, simulated annealing, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, and eXtreme Gradient Boosting were administered to investigate the role of preoperative hematologic parameters accompanied by baseline characteristics on three clinical outcomes including surgical infectious complications, recurrence, and death. RESULTS The frequency of infectious complications was correlated with the surgical procedure, while tumor recurrence was significantly influenced by T stage and N stage. In terms of mortality, alongside T and N stage, the status of resection margin involvement was significantly correlated. Based on the ROC analysis, the NLR >2.69, MPV ≤9 fL, and PDW ≤10.5 fL were more classified patients to mortality status. Likewise, the PLT >220 109/L, MPV ≤9 fL, PDW ≤10.4 fL, and PLR >13.6 were correlated with recurrence. However, all factors examined in this study were not significant classifiers for the outcome of surgical infectious complications. The results of ML algorithms were also in line with ROC analysis. CONCLUSION According to the results of both ROC analysis and ML models, preoperative hematologic parameters are considerable prognostic factors of postoperative outcomes in rectal cancer patients, and are recommended to be monitored by clinicians to prevent unfavorable outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported that low hematocrit levels indicate poor survival in patients with ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, the prognostic value of hematocrit for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients has not been determined. The prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) for CRC patients was controversial. AIM To investigate the impact of RDW and hematocrit on the short-term outcomes and long-term prognosis of CRC patients who underwent radical surgery. METHODS Patients who were diagnosed with CRC and underwent radical CRC resection between January 2011 and January 2020 at a single clinical center were included. The short-term outcomes, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were compared among the different groups. Cox analysis was also conducted to identify independent risk factors for OS and DFS. RESULTS There were 4258 CRC patients who underwent radical surgery included in our study. A total of 1573 patients were in the lower RDW group and 2685 patients were in the higher RDW group. There were 2166 and 2092 patients in the higher hematocrit group and lower hematocrit group, respectively. Patients in the higher RDW group had more intraoperative blood loss (P < 0.01) and more overall complications (P < 0.01) than did those in the lower RDW group. Similarly, patients in the lower hematocrit group had more intraoperative blood loss (P = 0.012), longer hospital stay (P = 0.016) and overall complications (P < 0.01) than did those in the higher hematocrit group. The higher RDW group had a worse OS and DFS than did the lower RDW group for tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage I (OS, P < 0.05; DFS, P = 0.001) and stage II (OS, P = 0.004; DFS, P = 0.01) than the lower RDW group; the lower hematocrit group had worse OS and DFS for TNM stage II (OS, P < 0.05; DFS, P = 0.001) and stage III (OS, P = 0.001; DFS, P = 0.001) than did the higher hematocrit group. Preoperative hematocrit was an independent risk factor for OS [P = 0.017, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.256, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.041-1.515] and DFS (P = 0.035, HR = 1.194, 95%CI: 1.013-1.408). CONCLUSION A higher preoperative RDW and lower hematocrit were associated with more postoperative complications. However, only hematocrit was an independent risk factor for OS and DFS in CRC patients who underwent radical surgery, while RDW was not.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the consistency of heterogeneity degree of erythrocyte volume parameters between the blood automated analyzer Sysmex-XN9000 and the advanced red blood cell software CellaVisionDI-60. METHOD 500 blood samples of volunteers were analyzed by Sysmex-XN9000 and CellaVision-DI60. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, false positive rate, and false negative rate were evaluated. The consistency of all parameters was tested. RESULT Taking the standard RBC group as the control group, the RBC parameters of the macrocytic and the microcytic group were compared. There was a statistical difference between the groups. ROC curve analysis showed that the best cutoff value of microcytic and of macrocytic affecting MCV were 4.1% and 5.7%, respectively. The best cutoff value of anisocytosis was 15.0%. The correlation coefficient between anisocytosis and red blood cell distribution width (RDW-CV) was 0.756. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and coincidence rate of anisocytosis were high. The false negative rate was 10.0%, and the false positive rate was 7.4%. CONCLUSION All parameters of the degree of heterogeneity have good accuracy and consistency in the two instruments. Anisocytosis is with higher coincidence rate and positive predictive value. MIC and MAC have a good prediction on the increase or decrease of MCV. Although advanced RBC software's false negative and false positive rates are high, the red blood cell image system is more intuitive and time-saving in observing cells. Consequently, CellaVision-DI60 is suggested to combine with XN-9000 for judging the anisocytosis in daily work comprehensively.

Abstract
Background Red cell distribution width (RDW) can signal poor prognosis in inflammatory medical conditions. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between preoperative RDW and colorectal cancer (CRC) in a large cohort of patients. Methods A total of 6,224 CRC patients who underwent radical resection at the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center were evaluated retrospectively. The prognostic significance of RDW for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan-Meier method. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used based on survival confounding factors. Results The mean age of the study participants was 59.5±12.0 years and the study cohort was 44% female. The overall median and mean RDW values were 13.3% and 14.0%, respectively. Patients were stratified into three groups based on their RDW value (≤13.3%, 13.4-14.0%, and >14.0%). OS and DFS were shown to significantly deteriorate with increasing RDW category. In the PSM population, OS and DFS were significantly lower in the high RDW group compared with matched controls. However, the differences vanished in the comparisons between the middle RDW group and the control group. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that preoperative RDW may represent a simple and powerful prognostic factor for CRC patients after radical resection. Integrating RDW into clinical practice may better inform the prognosis and optimize therapeutic approaches for patients with CRC.

Abstract
Background Red cell distribution width (RDW) may be related to the prognosis of hip fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between (RDW) and all-cause mortality in elderly hip fractures. Materials and Methods Elderly patients aged ≥65 years who had a hip fracture were screened between January 1, 2015, and September 30, 2019. The age, gender of patients and other demographics, as well as history of allergy, injury mechanism, underlying illnesses at the time of admission, fracture classification, time from admission to operation, RDW, operation time, blood loss, infusion, transfusion, treatment strategy, and length in hospital stay and follow-up and other clinical characteristics were collected. Linear and nonlinear multivariate Cox regression models were used to identify the association between RDW and mortality in these patients. Analyses were performed using EmpowerStats and the R software. Results A total of 2587 patients were included in this retrospective cohort study. The mean follow-up period was 38.92 months. A total of 873 (33.75%) patients died due to all-cause mortality. The RDW was linearly associated with mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures. Linear multivariate Cox regression models showed that RDW was associated with mortality (hazard ratio [HR]=1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.02-1.05, P < 0.0001) after adjusting for confounding factors. The mortality risk increased by 3% when RDW increased by 1 fL. Conclusion RDW is associated with mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures, and RDW could be considered a predictor of mortality risk. Registration ChiCTR2200057323.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a standard parameter of complete blood count and indicates the variability in red blood cell size. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative RDW can be used to predict the recurrence and prognosis of endometrial carcinoma. METHODS The medical records of 431 patients diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed between May 2006 and June 2018. In addition to RDW, the clinicopathological factors, survival curves, and prognoses of the patients with endometrial carcinoma were compared between the high (n = 213) and low (n = 218) groups according to the median RDW value (12.8%). RESULTS The patients with high RDW had significantly advanced-stage (p = 0.00) pelvic lymph node metastasis (p = 0.01) and recurrence (p = 0.01) compared to those in the low-RDW group. In univariate analysis with DFS as the endpoint, surgical stage, type II histology, grade, RDW, and lymph node metastasis were independently associated with survival. Patients with high RDW values had significantly shorter disease-free survival and overall survival than those with low RDW values (log-rank p = 0.03, log-rank p = 0.04, respectively). CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that RDW is a simple and convenient indicator of endometrial carcinoma recurrence. Prospective studies are needed to validate the findings of the current study.

Abstract
Background RDW might be an easy and cost-effective pre-operative prognostic factor for cancer patients. The aim of the current study was to analyze whether red blood cell distribution width (RDW) was a prognostic factor for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients who underwent radical surgery. Methods We conducted the searching strategy in three databases including the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library from the inception to May 07, 2022, to find eligible studies. In this meta-analysis, we focused on the prognosis. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Results A total of seven studies involving 7,541 patients were included in this meta-analysis. After pooling up the HRs, red blood cell distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) was not an independent prognostic factor of OS (HR = 1.48, I2 = 90%, 95% CI = 0.93 to 2.36, P = 0.10), however, red blood cell distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) was an independent prognostic factor of OS (HR = 1.99, I2 = 0%, 95% CI = 1.59 to 2.49, P < 0.01). As for DFS, we found that RDW-CV (HR = 1.51, I2 = 83%, 95% CI = 0.94 to 2.43, P = 0.09 < 0.10) and RDW-SD (HR = 1.77, I2 = 56%, 95% CI = 0.91 to 3.43, P = 0.09 < 0.10) were both the independent prognostic factors. In terms of CSS, we found that RDW-CV was not an independent prognostic factor (HR = 1.23, I2 = 95%, 95% CI = 0.72 to 2.10, P = 0.46). Conclusion RDW-SD was an independent prognostic factor of OS and DFS, and RDW-CV was an independent prognostic factor of DFS.

Abstract
Study objectivePostoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are common and associated with adverse outcomes impairing long-term survival and quality of recovery. This single-centered retrospective study aimed to examine factors associated with PPCs in patients receiving elective colorectal surgery aged ≥60 years.MethodsBetween January 2019 and December 2019, 638 patients at the Shanghai Changhai Hospital who had received elective surgery for colorectal cancer were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into the PPC group (n=38) and non-PPC group (n=600). Neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and systemic inflammatory index (SII) were selected and caculated to indicate preoperative and postoperative inflammatory status. Receiver operating characteristic curve and bivariate correlation analyses were performed to evaluate the identified risk factors.Main resultsThe overall incidence of PPCs was approximately 5.96%. Multivariate regression analysis identified age (OR = 1.094, 95%CI 1.038–1.153, P = 0.001), preoperative RDW (OR = 1.159, 95%CI 1.025–1.309, P = 0.018), and preoperative SII (OR = 1.001, 95%CI 1.000–1.003, P = 0.035) as independent risk factors for PPCs. The cut-off values of age, preoperative RDW, and preoperative SII for predicting PPCs were 69.5 (sensitivity 0.658, specificity 0.653), 13.2 (sensitivity 0.789, specificity 0.552) and 556.1 (sensitivity 0.579, specificity 0.672), respectively.ConclusionsAge, preoperative RDW, and preoperative SII were identified as independent risk factors for PPC occurrence in elderly patients receiving elective colorectal surgery. Further studies are warranted to evaluate whether normalization of preoperative RDW and SII, as modifiable risk factors, are associated with improved surgical outcomes.

Abstract
The incidence of melanoma, a very aggressive skin cancer, has increased over the past few decades. Although there are well-established clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological criteria, the diagnosis is often performed late, which has important implications on the patient’s clinical outcome. Unfortunately, melanoma is one of the most challenging tumors to diagnose because it is a heterogeneous neoplasm at the clinical, histopathological, and molecular level. The use of reliable biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression is becoming a standard of care in modern medicine. In this review, we discuss the latest studies, which highlight findings from the genomics, epitranscriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics areas, pointing out different genes, molecules and cells as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in cutaneous melanoma.

Abstract
Patients with higher red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels had worse OS and PFS. Preoperative RDW was independently associated with PFS and OS in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Preoperative RDW can be utilized as a novel prognostic biomarker for patients with mRCC.
Objective This study aimed to explore the prognostic value of preoperative red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Methods Clinicopathological data of 230 patients with mRCC treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and the Chinese PLA General Hospital from January 2008 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were stratified according to the optimal cut-off value of RDW calculated using X-tile software. The prognostic value of RDW was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier curve with log-rank test and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models. Results A total of 230 patients were included. The optimal cut-off value of RDW obtained using X-tile software was 13.1%. The median Progression-free survival (PFS) and Overall survival (OS) of all populations were 12.06 months (IQR: 4.73–36.9) and 32.20 months (IQR: 13.73–69.46), respectively. Kaplan–Meier curves showed that patients with high RDW had worse PFS and OS than those with low RDW (median PFS of 9.7 months vs. 17.9 months, P = 0.002, and median OS of 27.8 months vs. 45.1 months, P = 0.012, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that RDW was an independent risk factor for PFS (HR: 1.505; 95% CI: 1.111–2.037; P = 0.008) and OS (HR: 1.626; 95% CI: 1.164–2.272; P = 0.004) in mRCC after cytoreductive nephrectomy. Conclusion Preoperative RDW was independently associated with PFS and OS in patients with mRCC and may be a potential predictor of survival outcomes in mRCC.

Abstract
Background: The microRNA miR-187-3p plays antitumor roles in a variety of cancers. We and others have previously identified miR-187-3p as a potential tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer (CRC), but there are also reports revealing that high miR-187-3p levels are associated with poor prognosis among CRC patients. This study further investigated the clinicopathological significance of miR-187-3p in CRC. Methods: MiR-187-3p levels in paired polyp/CRC/normal specimens or primary CRC/liver metastasis specimens were determined by qPCR, and correlated with the patient’s clinicopathological and postoperative survival data. The clinical findings were validated using our validation cohort and data obtained from the TCGA or GEO databases. The functional effects of miR-187-3p were investigated through its overexpression in CRC cell lines. Results: MiR-187-3p was significantly repressed in colorectal polyps and CRC when compared to adjacent normal tissue. Overexpression of miR-187-3p in CRC cell lines impaired colony formation, cell migration, and invasion, and induced chemosensitivity. Clinical analysis revealed that despite miR-187-3p being repressed in CRC, high tumor miR-187-3p levels were positively correlated with tumor stage and disease recurrence. Further analysis showed that miR-187-3p levels were lower in metastatic specimens when compared to paired primary CRC, suggesting that high tumor miR-187-3p levels resulted from the dissemination of metastatic tumor cells. Tumor miR-187-3p levels were positively correlated with peripheral inflammation-related blood markers. Finally, SPRY1 was identified as a novel target gene of miR-187-3p, and was involved in miR-187-3p-impaired CRC metastasis. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that in spite of its repression and role as a tumor suppressor in CRC, high levels of miR-187-3p in tumors were correlated with poor prognosis and higher levels of peripheral inflammation-related blood markers.

Abstract
Objective: We aimed to assess whether red cell distribution width (RDW) was associated with pre-operative clinical features or post-operative clinicopathological outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), and to determine the utility of RDW as a diagnostic or prognostic marker of CRC.
Material and Method: This retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2018 and May 2021 at a university hospital in Turkey. A total of 188 patients histologically diagnosed with CRC who had undergone surgery were included in the study.

Abstract
Objective Recent studies have demonstrated emerging evidence of the role of inflammation in the growth and recurrence of chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Red blood cell distribution width to platelet count ratio (RPR) is a novel biomarker for inflammation in cancer, cardiac, and inflammatory diseases. The present retrospective study investigated the impact of RPR on recurrence after burr hole surgery for cSDH in 297 patients. Methods The optimal cut-off value for RPR was defined as ≥0.0568 according to the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC:0.64, 95%CI:0.55-0.72, p = 0.007). The study cohort was dichotomized into low (n = 157) and high (n = 140) RPR groups. Results Significant differences between the groups were identified regarding American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification and frequency of anticoagulant intake. Demographics, comorbidities, size, morphology, and mass effect of cSDH were homogeneously distributed among the RPR groups. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis considering location, midline-shift, septation, RPR, anticoagulant intake, sex, and ASA classification revealed that an increased baseline RPR (≥0.0568, OR: 3.1, 95%CI: 1.4-6.8, p = 0.004), and preoperative midline-shift (≥5 mm, OR: 2.7, 95%CI: 1.3-6.0, p = 0.01) are independent predictors of recurrent cSDH. Conclusion The present findings suggest RPR as a novel inflammatory biomarker enabling risk stratification of recurrence after burr hole surgery for cSDH and might facilitate tailored medical decision making.

Abstract
The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a simple and widely available parameter obtained from a complete blood cell count test and is usually used in the analysis of anemia. Recently, studies have discovered the association between RDW and the host inflammatory response of cancer patients. We aimed to determine the prognostic value of RDW in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. 5315 total patients with stage I-II CRC from the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital between 2001 and 2018 were enrolled. The study cohort was divided into two groups using RDW = 13.8 as the cutoff value as determined by receiver operating curve. High RDW had worse overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS), and was also independently related to older age, more advanced tumor stage, lower albumin level, lower hemoglobin level, and more co-morbidities including diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. We performed a propensity-score matched analysis to balance the heterogeneity between the two groups and to reduce the influence of confounding factors that may have compromised the prognosis. High RDW remained a negative predictor of OS (HR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.25-1.78), as well as DFS and CSS. In conclusion, this is the first report using propensity matching to demonstrate the relationship between RDW and the prognosis of early-stage CRC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies suggest that increases in red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and decreases in albumin level can independently predict adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The prognostic value of RDW-albumin ratio (RAR), an innovate biomarker of inflammation, in heart failure (HF) patients has not been assessed. This study aimed to explore the association between RAR and mortality of HF patients. METHODS Data on patients diagnosed with HF were extracted from MIMIC-III database version 1.4. Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate the associations between RAR and mortality of HF patients. HF patients admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University were also enrolled to explore the relationship between RAR and existing indicators of HF. RESULTS For 90-day mortality, the HR (95% CI) for the second (4.33<RAR<5.44) and the third (RAR>5.44) tertiles were 2.00 (1.58, 2.54) and 3.63 (2.91, 4.53), respectively, compared to the first tertile (RAR<4.33). When adjusted for age, gender and ethnicity in Model 1, the adjusted HR (95% CI) value of third tertiles was 3.66 (2.93, 4.56). Further adjust the vital signs, blood biochemical indicators, SOFA score and other parameters in Model II, the adjusted HR value of third tertiles was still statistically significant (HR: 2.70, 95% CI: 2.07-3.51, P < 0.0001). A similar trend was observed for 30-day, one-year mortality. For HF patients, high RAR significantly increased the risk of sepsis and requirement for renal replacement therapy. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between RAR, CRP levels, and NT-proBNP respectively. CONCLUSION High level of RAR is associated with increased short- and long-term mortality of patients with heart failure. The RAR is a promising biomarker that is easy to obtain and readily predicts mortality in heart failure patients.

Abstract
Purpose Red cell distribution width (RDW), an inflammation biomarker, has been linked to poor outcomes in patients with different types of cancers. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between pre-/post-treatment 3-month RDW levels and changes in RDW with 3-year prognosis of prostate cancer. Patients and Methods A total of 348 patients with prostate cancer were recruited between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2017 and were followed up for at least 3 years. RDW was measured with the Mindray BC-6800Plus automatic blood counting system at pre- and post-treatment 3-month. Demographic and clinical information of the participants were also collected. The overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. Cox regression and competing risk regression analyses were performed. Results During the follow-up period, 51 (14.66%) deaths occurred. The levels of pre- and post-treatment RDW levels were significantly higher in the death group than in the survival group (p<0.001). In the death group, the level of RDW continued to rise in most subjects, and the mean level of RDW was significantly higher at post-treatment than pre-treatment, contrary to the results observed in the survival group. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that high pre-treatment RDW, high post-treatment RDW, and persistently higher RDW were independently associated with OS and CSS (p<0.001). Similar results were observed in the competing risk regression analysis. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that patients with higher pre-treatment RDW levels, higher post-treatment RDW levels, and persistently higher RDW levels had poorer 3-year OS and CSS rates (p<0.05). Conclusion The levels of and changes in RDW before and after treatment were associated with the 3-year prognosis of prostate cancer, suggesting that RDW might be an efficient prognostic predictor in patients with prostate cancer.

Abstract
Simple Summary Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies, which arise from the epithelial cells of the biliary tree, with a high rate of local invasion and metastatic spreading. Surgical resection remains the treatment which offers the best chance of long-term survival. However, new chemotherapy regimens and multimodal strategies have showed encouraging results, supporting the need for simple and readily available preoperative tools able to predict survival and guide the treatment strategy. Recently, the prognostic role of several nutritional and inflammatory indexes in growth, biological aggressiveness, and spread has been investigated in different types of cancers. Nevertheless, complete and conclusive results on BTCs are lacking. By identifying a preoperative immune and inflammatory prognostic index based on simple routine blood samples, we may have an additional element that is useful in guiding the treatment strategy by assigning selected patients to preoperative or postoperative treatments despite pathological results. Abstract The relationship between immune-nutritional status and tumor growth; biological aggressiveness and survival, is still debated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prognostic performance of different inflammatory and immune-nutritional markers in patients who underwent surgery for biliary tract cancer (BTC). The prognostic role of the following inflammatory and immune-nutritional markers were investigated: Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS), Prognostic Index (PI), Neutrophil to Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Platelet to Lymphocyte ratio (PLR), Lymphocyte to Monocyte ratio (LMR), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI). A total of 282 patients undergoing surgery for BTC were included. According to Cox regression and ROC curves analysis for survival, LMR had the best prognostic performances, with hazard ratio (HR) of 1.656 (p = 0.005) and AUC of 0.652. Multivariable survival analysis identified the following independent prognostic factors: type of BTC (p = 0.002), T stage (p = 0.014), N stage (p < 0.001), histological grading (p = 0.045), and LMR (p = 0.025). Conversely, PNI was related to higher risk of severe morbidity (p < 0.001) and postoperative mortality (p = 0.005). In conclusion, LMR appears an independent prognostic factor of long-term survival, whilst PNI seems associated with worse short-term outcomes.

Abstract
Objective The complete blood count (CBC) is an essential blood test that has been used for decades to assess individuals’ overall health status. This study aimed to investigate the contributions of lockdown conditions to individuals’ overall health status using blood indices as biological markers. During lockdown, people are limited to confined spaces, have access to limited nutritional supply options, experience increased stress, and are exposed to other environmental factors. Methods Our study’s target population included all outpatients who were severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-negative and requested CBC assessments as part of their routine health checks. A total of 2414 CBC results were included, covering a period from February 2019 to December 2020. The average of different blood indices during the COVID-19 lockdown was compared to the 10-month period preceding the lockdown. Results The average counts of RBCs, hemoglobin, and hematocrit showed a significant increase during the lockdown period, which lasted from May 2020 to September 2020. Reductions were observed for the RBC distribution width, total white blood cell count, platelets, and platelet distribution width. Conclusion Our findings suggested that the overall health status of individuals improved during the lockdown period in the short term, but health status might be adversely affected under these conditions of a longer period. Both RDW and PDW could be used as indicators for the overall health status when assessed against other blood indices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest red blood cell distribution width (RDW) was a prognostic factor in various types of cancer patients, although the results are controversial. The objective of this study was to investigate the significance of RDW in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) after radical resection. METHOD The relationship between the preoperative serum RDW value and clinic pathological characteristics was analyzed in 157 ICC patients between January 2012 and June 2018 who underwent curative resection. X-tile software was used to determine 40.2 fl, 12.6% as the optimal cut-off value for RDW-SD and RDW-CV respectively. 153 patients were classified into the low RDW-SD (≤ 40.2, n = 53) group and the high RDW-SD (> 40.2, n = 104) group, low RDW-CV (≤ 12.6, n = 94) group and the high RDW-CV (> 12.6, n = 63). Based on the RDW-SD combined with RDW-CV (SCC), classified into SCC = 0, 1 and 2 group. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the effect of RDW on survival. RESULTS Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that Patients with RDW-SD > 40.2 were significantly associated with better OS (P = 0.004, median OS: 68.0 months versus 17.0 months). Patients with RDW-CV > 12.6 were significantly associated with better OS (p = 0.030, median OS: not reach versus 22.0 months). Compared with a SCC = 0 or SCC = 1, SCC = 2 was significantly associated with better OS (p < 0.001, median OS: not reach versus 33.0 months versus 16, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, RDW-SD > 40.2 fl (HR = 0.446, 95% CI: 0.262-0.760, p = 0.003), RDW-CV > 12.6% (HR = 0.425, 95%CI: 0.230-0.783, p = 0.006), SCC = 2 (HR = 0.270, 95%CI: 0.133-0.549, p < 0.001) were associated with favorable OS. The multivariate analysis showed RDW-SD, RDW-CV and SCC level were not independent prognostic factors for DFS. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative low levels of RDW are associated with poor survival in ICC after curative resection. This provides a new way for predicting the prognosis of ICC patients and more targeted intervention measures.

Abstract
Although stage I and II colon cancers (CC) generally show a very good prognosis, a small proportion of these patients dies from recurrent disease. The identification of high-risk patients, who may benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy, becomes therefore essential. We retrospectively evaluated 107 cases of stage I (n = 28, 26.2%) and II (n = 79, 73.8%) CC for correlations among preoperative inflammatory markers, histopathological factors and long-term prognosis. A neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio greater than 3 (H-NLR) and a platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio greater than 150 (H-PLR) were significantly associated with the presence of poorly differentiated clusters (PDC) (p = 0.007 and p = 0.039, respectively). In addition, H-NLR and PDC proved to be significant and independent survival prognosticators for overall survival (OS; p = 0.007 and p < 0.001, respectively), while PDC was the only significant prognostic factor for cancer-specific survival (CSS; p < 0.001,). Finally, the combination of H-NLR and PDC allowed an optimal stratification of OS and CSS in our cohort, suggesting a potential role in clinical practice for the identification of high-risk patients with stage I and II CC.

PURPOSE The pathological, clinical, and therapeutic features of colorectal cancer (CRC) depend on its anatomical localization. We investigated possible associations between the red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and CRC localization. METHODS Two-hundred eighty-eight consecutive patients with CRC were retrospectively studied. Demographic, clinical, pathological and laboratory data were retrieved from clinical records and reports. RESULTS Median RDW values were significantly higher in patients with right-sided CRC when compared to those with CRC in other localizations (16.2, IQR: 14.5-20.0 vs 13.8, IQR: 13.0-16.1, p < 0.0001). Anisocytosis was statistically associated to haemoglobin (Hb), mean haemoglobin concentration (MHC), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values in all the patient groups examined. A cut-off value of 14.3% was associated with right-sided localization with sensitivity and specificity of 76.3% and 64.2%, respectively (AUC 0.71). CONCLUSION Median RDW values were significantly higher in right-sided CRC when compared to other tumour locations, and may represent an additional marker for differential diagnosis.
