Sensitive Detection of Dengue Virus Type 2 E-Proteins Signals Using Self-Assembled Monolayers/Reduced Graphene Oxide-PAMAM Dendrimer Thin Film-SPR Optical Sensor

Identifying citrus limonoids as a potential fusion inhibitor of DENV-2 virus through its in silico study and FTIR analysis

Dengue virus type 2 (DENV-2) is an arthropod-borne deadly RNA human pathogen transmitted through the mosquito Aedes. The DENV-2 roots viral infection by facilitating entry with its envelope glycoprotein to the receptor protein Dendritic-cell-specific ICAM3-grabbing non-integrin (DC-SIGN) through membrane fusion. Here, an organizational path is reported for inhibiting the transition due to fusion activation and by blocking the residues of the DC-SIGN-E-Glyco protein complex through citrus limonoids with its antiviral effect. Based on lower binding affinity obtained with E-glycoprotein, and based on ADMET and drug-likeness study, limonin was selected as having effective interaction with DC-SIGN-E-glycoprotein complex in comparison to other citrus limonoids. The FTIR spectra performed with the limonin-E-glycoprotein sample provide evidence of hydrogen bond formation that indicates the formation of a strong limonin-E-glycoprotein conjugate. Further, the strong physical interaction between DC-SIGN and small limonin molecules in comparison to that of E-glyco with DC-SIGN assures the development of immunity against DENV-2.

Microfluidics-Based Nanobiosensors for Healthcare Monitoring

Efficient healthcare management demands prompt decision-making based on fast diagnostics tools, astute data analysis, and informatics analysis. The rapid detection of analytes at the point of care is ensured using microfluidics in synergy with nanotechnology and biotechnology. The nanobiosensors use nanotechnology for testing, rapid disease diagnosis, monitoring, and management. In essence, nanobiosensors detect biomolecules through bioreceptors by modulating the physicochemical signals generating an optical and electrical signal as an outcome of the binding of a biomolecule with the help of a transducer. The nanobiosensors are sensitive and selective and play a significant role in the early identification of diseases. This article reviews the detection method used with the microfluidics platform for nanobiosensors and illustrates the benefits of combining microfluidics and nanobiosensing techniques by various examples. The fundamental aspects, and their application are discussed to illustrate the advancement in the development of microfluidics-based nanobiosensors and the current trends of these nano-sized sensors for point-of-care diagnosis of various diseases and their function in healthcare monitoring.

Surface plasmonic biosensors: principles, designs and applications

Recently, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have been widely used in environmental monitoring, food contamination detection and diagnosing medical conditions due to their superior sensitivity, label-free detection and rapid analysis speed. This paper briefly elaborates on the development history of SPR technology and introduces SPR signal sensing principles. A summary of recent applications of SPR sensors in different fields is highlighted, including their figures of merit and limitations. Finally, the personal perspectives and future development trends about sensor preparation and design are discussed in detail, which may be critical for improving the performance of SPR sensors.

Plasmonic Nanostructure Biosensors: A Review

Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The review concludes by providing perspectives on the future development of plasmonic nanostructure biosensors.

Micro- and nanosystems for the detection of hemorrhagic fever viruses

Hemorrhagic fever viruses (HFVs) are virulent pathogens that can cause severe and often fatal illnesses in humans. Timely and accurate detection of HFVs is critical for effective disease management and prevention. In recent years, micro- and nano-technologies have emerged as promising approaches for the detection of HFVs. This paper provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art systems for micro- and nano-scale approaches to detect HFVs. It covers various aspects of these technologies, including the principles behind their sensing assays, as well as the different types of diagnostic strategies that have been developed. This paper also explores future possibilities of employing micro- and nano-systems for the development of HFV diagnostic tools that meet the practical demands of clinical settings.

Nanomaterials-based biosensor and their applications: A review

A sensor can be called ideal or perfect if it is enriched with certain characteristics viz., superior detections range, high sensitivity, selectivity, resolution, reproducibility, repeatability, and response time with good flow. Recently, biosensors made of nanoparticles (NPs) have gained very high popularity due to their excellent applications in nearly all the fields of science and technology. The use of NPs in the biosensor is usually done to fill the gap between the converter and the bioreceptor, which is at the nanoscale. Simultaneously the uses of NPs and electrochemical techniques have led to the emergence of biosensors with high sensitivity and decomposition power. This review summarizes the development of biosensors made of NPssuch as noble metal NPs and metal oxide NPs, nanowires (NWs), nanorods (NRs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), quantum dots (QDs), and dendrimers and their recent advancement in biosensing technology with the expansion of nanotechnology.

Synthesis of Isolated DNA Aptamer and Its Application of AC-Electrothermal Flow-Based Rapid Biosensor for the Detection of Dengue Virus in a Spiked Sample

Dengue fever is an infectious disease caused by the dengue virus (DENV) and is transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions. The early detection method at a low cost is essential. To address this, we synthesized the isolated DENV aptamer for fabricating a rapid electrochemical biosensor on a Au interdigitated microgap electrode (AuIMGE). The DENV aptamers were generated using the SELEX (systemic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment) method for binding to DENV surface envelope proteins. To reduce the manufacturing cost, unnecessary nucleotide sequences were excluded from the isolation process of the DENV aptamer. To reduce the detection time, the alternating current electrothermal flow (ACEF) technique was applied to the fabricated biosensor, which can shorten the detection time to 10 min. The performance of the biosensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In the diluted DENV protein solution, the linear range of the concentrations was from 1 pM to 1 μM and the LOD was 76.7 fM. Moreover, the proposed biosensor detected DENV in a diluted spiked sample at a linear range of 10-6 to 106 TCID50/mL, while the detection performance was proven with an LOD of 1.74 × 10-7 TCID50/mL along with high selectivity.

Dendrimer-Based Coatings on a Photonic Crystal Surface for Ultra-Sensitive Small Molecule Detection

We propose and demonstrate dendrimer-based coatings for a sensitive biochip surface that enhance the high-performance sorption of small molecules (i.e., biomolecules with low molecular weights) and the sensitivity of a label-free, real-time photonic crystal surface mode (PC SM) biosensor. Biomolecule sorption is detected by measuring changes in the parameters of optical modes on the surface of a photonic crystal (PC). We describe the step-by-step biochip fabrication process. Using oligonucleotides as small molecules and PC SM visualization in a microfluidic mode, we show that the PAMAM (poly-amidoamine)-modified chip's sorption efficiency is almost 14 times higher than that of the planar aminosilane layer and 5 times higher than the 3D epoxy-dextran matrix. The results obtained demonstrate a promising direction for further development of the dendrimer-based PC SM sensor method as an advanced label-free microfluidic tool for detecting biomolecule interactions. Current label-free methods for small biomolecule detection, such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), have a detection limit down to pM. In this work, we achieved for a PC SM biosensor a Limit of Quantitation of up to 70 fM, which is comparable with the best label-using methods without their inherent disadvantages, such as changes in molecular activity caused by labeling.

Paper-based diagnostic chips for viral detection

Viruses cause various diseases in humans, and pose serious health risks to individuals and populations worldwide. As a result, various diagnostic procedures and methods have been developed to prevent, manage, and reduce the burden of viral diseases, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. Among these, paper-based diagnostic chips are becoming increasingly common because of their speed, accuracy, convenience, and economical and environmental friendliness. These paper-based diagnostic tests have ideal point-of-care (POC) diagnostic applications, particularly in personalized healthcare. Paper-based diagnostics have emerged as innovative and low-cost solutions for diagnosing viral diseases in remote and underdeveloped regions where traditional diagnostic methods are not readily available. These tests are easy to use, require minimal equipment, and can be performed by nonspecialized personnel, making them accessible even in resource-constrained settings. In this review, we discuss recent developments in paper-based diagnostic chips, the importance of improved methods for identifying viral pathogens, drawbacks of traditional detection techniques, and challenges and prospects of paper-based diagnostic chips for the detection of viruses.

Impact of nanotechnology on conventional and artificial intelligence-based biosensing strategies for the detection of viruses

Recent years have witnessed the emergence of several viruses and other pathogens. Some of these infectious diseases have spread globally, resulting in pandemics. Although biosensors of various types have been utilized for virus detection, their limited sensitivity remains an issue. Therefore, the development of better diagnostic tools that facilitate the more efficient detection of viruses and other pathogens has become important. Nanotechnology has been recognized as a powerful tool for the detection of viruses, and it is expected to change the landscape of virus detection and analysis. Recently, nanomaterials have gained enormous attention for their value in improving biosensor performance owing to their high surface-to-volume ratio and quantum size effects. This article reviews the impact of nanotechnology on the design, development, and performance of sensors for the detection of viruses. Special attention has been paid to nanoscale materials, various types of nanobiosensors, the internet of medical things, and artificial intelligence-based viral diagnostic techniques.

Use of Graphene and Its Derivatives for the Detection of Dengue Virus

Every year, the dengue virus and its principal mosquito vector, Aedes sp., have caused massive outbreaks, primarily in equatorial countries. The pre-existing techniques available for dengue detection are expensive and require trained personnel. Graphene and its derivatives have remarkable properties of electrical and thermal conductivity, and are flexible, light, and biocompatible, making them ideal platforms for biosensor development. The incorporation of these materials, along with appropriate nanomaterials, improves the quality of detection methods. Graphene can help overcome the difficulties associated with conventional techniques. In this review, we have given comprehensive details on current graphene-based diagnostics for dengue virus detection. We have also discussed state-of-the-art biosensing technologies and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of the same.

Emerging Landscape of SARS-CoV-2 Variants and Detection Technologies

In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified that has caused significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Like all RNA viruses, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) evolves over time through random mutation resulting in genetic variations in the population. Although the currently approved coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines can be given to those over 5 years of age and older in most countries, strikingly, the number of people diagnosed positive for SARS-Cov-2 is still increasing. Therefore, to prevent and control this epidemic, early diagnosis of infected individuals is of great importance. The current detection of SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus variants are mainly based on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Although the sensitivity of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction is high, it has some disadvantages, for example, multiple temperature changes, long detection time, complicated operation, expensive instruments, and the need for professional personnel, which brings considerable inconvenience to the early diagnosis of this virus. This review comprehensively summarizes the development and application of various current detection technologies for novel coronaviruses, including isothermal amplification, CRISPR-Cas detection, serological detection, biosensor, ensemble, and microfluidic technology, along with next-generation sequencing. Those findings offer us a great potential to replace or combine with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction detection to achieve the purpose of allowing predictive diagnostics and targeted prevention of SARS-Cov-2 in the future.

Progress and Trends of Optical Microfiber-Based Biosensors

Biosensors are central to diagnostic and medicinal applications, especially in terms of monitoring, managing illness, and public health. Microfiber-based biosensors are known to be capable of measuring both the presence and behavior of biological molecules in a highly sensitive manner. In addition, the flexibility of microfiber in supporting a variety of sensing layer designs and the integration of nanomaterials with biorecognition molecules brings immense opportunity for specificity enhancement. This review paper aims to discuss and explore different microfiber configurations by highlighting their fundamental concepts, fabrication processes, and performance as biosensors.

Plasmon-Exciton Coupling Effect in Nanostructured Arrays for Optical Signal Amplification and SARS-CoV-2 DNA Sensing

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-enhanced optical signal using a nanoslit array and acridine orange (AO) dye system at a flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate was achieved in this work and demonstrated a simple sensing scheme to directly detect SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid via DNA hybridization. A simple nanoimprinting pattern transfer technique was introduced to form uniform reproducible nanoslit arrays where the dimensions of the slit array were controlled by the thickness of the gold film. The plasmon-exciton coupling effect on the optical enhancement of different dye molecules, i.e., AO, propidium iodide (PI), or dihydroethidium (DHE) attached to the nanoslit surfaces, was examined thoroughly by measuring the surface reflection and fluorescence imaging. The results indicate that the best overlap of the plasmon resonance wavelength to the excitation spectrum of AO presented the largest optical enhancement (∼57×) compared to the signal at flat gold surfaces. Based on this finding, a sensitive assay for detecting DNA hybridization was generated using the interaction of the selected SARS-CoV-2 ssDNA and dsDNA with AO to trigger the metachromatic behavior of the dye at the nanoarray surfaces. We found strong optical signal amplification on the formation of acridine-ssDNA complexes and a quenched signal upon hybridization to the complementary target DNA (ct-DNA) along with a blue shift in the fluorescence of AO-dsDNAs. A quantitative evaluation of the ct-DNA concentration in a range of 100-0.08 nM using both the reflection and emission imaging signals demonstrated two linear regimes with a lowest detection limit of 0.21 nM. The sensing method showed high sensitivity and distinguished signals from 1-, 2-, and 3-base mismatched DNA targets, as well as high stability and reusability. This approach toward enhancing optical signal for DNA sensing offers promise in a general, rapid, and direct vision detection method for nucleic acid analytes.

Nanotechnology-Enabled Biosensors: A Review of Fundamentals, Design Principles, Materials, and Applications

Biosensors are modern engineering tools that can be widely used for various technological applications. In the recent past, biosensors have been widely used in a broad application spectrum including industrial process control, the military, environmental monitoring, health care, microbiology, and food quality control. Biosensors are also used specifically for monitoring environmental pollution, detecting toxic elements' presence, the presence of bio-hazardous viruses or bacteria in organic matter, and biomolecule detection in clinical diagnostics. Moreover, deep medical applications such as well-being monitoring, chronic disease treatment, and in vitro medical examination studies such as the screening of infectious diseases for early detection. The scope for expanding the use of biosensors is very high owing to their inherent advantages such as ease of use, scalability, and simple manufacturing process. Biosensor technology is more prevalent as a large-scale, low cost, and enhanced technology in the modern medical field. Integration of nanotechnology with biosensors has shown the development path for the novel sensing mechanisms and biosensors as they enhance the performance and sensing ability of the currently used biosensors. Nanoscale dimensional integration promotes the formulation of biosensors with simple and rapid detection of molecules along with the detection of single biomolecules where they can also be evaluated and analyzed critically. Nanomaterials are used for the manufacturing of nano-biosensors and the nanomaterials commonly used include nanoparticles, nanowires, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanorods, and quantum dots (QDs). Nanomaterials possess various advantages such as color tunability, high detection sensitivity, a large surface area, high carrier capacity, high stability, and high thermal and electrical conductivity. The current review focuses on nanotechnology-enabled biosensors, their fundamentals, and architectural design. The review also expands the view on the materials used for fabricating biosensors and the probable applications of nanotechnology-enabled biosensors.

Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensitivity Enhancement Based on Protonated Polyaniline Films Doped by Aluminum Nitrate

Complex composite films based on polyaniline (PANI) doped hydrochloric acid (HCl) incorporated with aluminum nitrate (Al(NO₃)₃) on Au-layer were designed and synthesized as a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing device. The physicochemical properties of (PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ complex composite films were studied for various Al(NO₃)₃ concentrations (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 wt.%). The refractive index of the (PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ complex composite films increased continuously as Al(NO₃)₃ concentrations increased. The electrical conductivity values increased from 5.10 µS/cm to 10.00 µS/cm as Al(NO₃)₃ concentration increased to 32 wt.%. The sensitivity of the SPR sensing device was investigated using a theoretical approach and experimental measurements. The theoretical system of SPR measurement confirmed that increasing Al(NO₃)₃ in (PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ complex composite films enhanced the sensitivity from about 114.5 [Deg/RIU] for Au-layer to 159.0 [Deg/RIU] for Au-((PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ (32 wt.%)). In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio for Au-layer was 3.95, which increased after coating by (PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ (32 wt.%) complex composite layer to 8.82. Finally, we conclude that coating Au-layer by (PANI-HCl)/Al(NO₃)₃ complex composite films enhances the sensitivity of the SPR sensing device.

Plasmonic Refractive Index Sensor Enhanced with Chitosan/Au Bilayer Thin Film for Dopamine Detection

Surface plasmonic sensors have received considerable attention, found extensive applications, and outperformed conventional optical sensors. In this work, biopolymer chitosan (CS) was used to prepare the bilayer structure (CS/Au) of a plasmonic refractive index sensor for dopamine (DA) detection. The sensing characteristics of the developed plasmonic sensor were evaluated. Increasing DA concentrations significantly shifted the SPR dips. The sensor exhibited stability and a refractive index sensitivity of 8.850°/RIU in the linear range 0.1 nM to 1 µM with a detection limit of 0.007 nM and affinity constant of 1.383 × 10⁸ M^-1. The refractive index and thickness of the CS/Au structure were measured simultaneously by fitting the obtained experimental findings to theoretical data based on Fresnel equations. The fitting yielded the refractive index values n (1.5350 ± 0.0001) and k (0.0150 ± 0.0001) for the CS layer contacting 0.1 nM of DA, and the thickness, d was (15.00 ± 0.01) nm. Then, both n and d values increased by increasing DA concentrations. In addition, the changes in the FTIR spectrum and the variations in sensor surface roughness and structure obtained by AFM analysis confirmed DA adsorption on the sensing layer. Based on these observations, CS/Au bilayer has enhanced the performance of this plasmonic sensor, which showed promising importance as a simple, low-cost, and reliable platform for DA sensing.

Structural and Optical Properties of Graphene Quantum Dots-Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Thin Film and Its Potential in Plasmonic Sensing of Carbaryl

In this study, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite was prepared and then coated on the surface of gold thin film via the spin coating technique. Subsequently, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) were adopted to understand the structure, surface morphology, and optical properties of the prepared samples. The FT-IR spectral analysis revealed important bands, such as O-H stretching, C=O stretching, C-H stretching, and O=C=O stretching vibrations. The surface roughness of the GQDs-PVA composite thin film was found to be increased after exposure to carbaryl. On the other hand, the optical absorbance of the GQDs-PVA thin film was obtained and further analysis was conducted, revealing a band gap E_g value of 4.090 eV. The sensing potential of the thin film was analyzed using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. The findings demonstrated that the developed sensor's lowest detection limit for carbaryl was 0.001 ppb, which was lower than that previously reported, i.e., 0.007 ppb. Moreover, other sensing performance parameters, such as full width at half maximum, detection accuracy, and signal-to-noise ratio, were also investigated to evaluate the sensor's efficiency.

Optical Biosensor Based on Graphene and Its Derivatives for Detecting Biomolecules

Graphene and its derivatives show great potential for biosensing due to their extraordinary optical, electrical and physical properties. In particular, graphene and its derivatives have excellent optical properties such as broadband and tunable absorption, fluorescence bursts, and strong polarization-related effects. Optical biosensors based on graphene and its derivatives make nondestructive detection of biomolecules possible. The focus of this paper is to review the preparation of graphene and its derivatives, as well as recent advances in optical biosensors based on graphene and its derivatives. The working principle of face plasmon resonance (SPR), surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and colorimetric sensors are summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of graphene and its derivatives applicable to various types of sensors are analyzed, and the methods of surface functionalization of graphene and its derivatives are introduced; these optical biosensors can be used for the detection of a range of biomolecules such as single cells, cellular secretions, proteins, nucleic acids, and antigen-antibodies; these new high-performance optical sensors are capable of detecting changes in surface structure and biomolecular interactions with the advantages of ultra-fast detection, high sensitivity, label-free, specific recognition, and the ability to respond in real-time. Problems in the current stage of application are discussed, as well as future prospects for graphene and its biosensors. Achieving the applicability, reusability and low cost of novel optical biosensors for a variety of complex environments and achieving scale-up production, which still faces serious challenges.

Diagnostic plasmonic sensors: opportunities and challenges

The medical fraternity is currently burgeoned and stressed with a huge rush of patients who have inflammatory conditions, metabolite diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. In these circumstances, advanced sensing technologies could have a huge impact on the quality of life of patients. Given plasmonic resonance effects significantly improve the ability to rapidly and accurately detect biological markers, plasmonic technology is harnessed to develop a fast and accurate diagnosis that can provide timely intervention with the diseases and can also aid the recovery process by complementing the therapy stage. In this short review, we provide an overlook of how the field of plasmonic sensing has revolutionized the field of medical diagnostics. This article reviews the fundamentals and development of plasmonics. In addition, we highlight the sensitivity of various SPR and LSPR sensors. The chemistry for functionalizing plasmonic sensors is also discussed. This review also outlines some general suggestions for future directions that we feel might be useful to advance our understanding of the universe or speed up the development of plasmonic sensors in the future.

Green-Graphene Protective Overlayer on Optical Microfibers: Prolongs the Device Lifetime

Optical microfibers find new applications in various fields of industry, which in turn require wear resistance, environmental friendliness and ease of use. However, optical microfibers are fragile. Here we report a new method to prolong the microfiber lifetime by modifying its surface with green-extracted graphene overlayers. Graphene films were obtained by dispergation of shungite mineral samples in an aqueous medium. For this, we tapered optical fibers and sculptured them with graphene films mixed with gold nanoparticles. We observed that due to the surface modification the lifetime and survivability of the microfiber increased 5 times, as compared to the bare microfiber. The embedded gold nanoparticles can also be utilized for enhanced sensitivity and other applications.

Nanoplasmonic biosensor for rapid detection of multiple viral variants in human serum

As viruses constantly change due to mutation, variants are expected to emerge demanding development of sensors capable of detecting multiple variants using one single sensor platform. Herein, we report the integration of a synthetic binder against SARS-CoV-2 with a nanoplasmonic-based sensing technology, which enables the successful detection of spike proteins of Alpha, Beta and Gamma variants of SARS CoV-2. The recognition event is achieved by specific nanostructured molecularly imprinted polymers (nanoMIPs), developed against a region of the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the SARS CoV-2 spike protein. The transduction is based on the principle of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) associated with silver nanostructures. The nanoMIPs-functionalised LSPR sensor allows for the detection of all 3 protein variants with a limit of detection of 9.71 fM, 7.32 fM and 8.81 pM using wavelength shifts respectively for Alpha, Beta and Gamma spike protein variants. This can be achieved within 30 min from the sample collection, both from blood and using nasal swab, thus making this sensor suitable for rapid detection of COVID-19. Additionally, the turnaround time for sensor development and validation can be completed in less than 8 weeks, making it suitable for addressing future pandemic needs without the requirement for biological binding agents, which is one of the bottlenecks to the supply chain in diagnostic devices.

Role of Nanoscale Roughness and Polarity in Odd–Even Effect of Self‐Assembled Monolayers

The dependency of substrate roughness on wetting properties of self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been studied extensively, but most previous studies used limited selection of probing liquid and range of surface roughness. These studies disregarded the limit to observation of sub‐nanometer odd–even parity effect, hence are inconclusive. In this work we report the role of solvent polarity on the roughness‐dependency of wetting behavior of SAMs by studying static con‐tact angle of a variety of probing liquids, with different polarities, on SAMs formed on Ag‐based substrate with different surface morphology. By overlapping the roughness ranges with previous studies on Au, the limitation of surface roughness (RMS=1 nm) to observation of the odd–even effect using water as probing liquid was confirmed, but other probing liquid yielded different roughness‐dependent behaviors, with more polar solvent showing more roughness‐dependent behavior. Based on these observations, we concluded that there exists a phase‐transition like behavior in SAMs due to substrate roughness and molecule chain length, but whose determination is dependent on the probing liquid.

Nanomaterials for virus sensing and tracking

The effect of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic on global healthcare systems has underlined the importance of timely and cost-effective point-of-care diagnosis of viruses. The need for ultrasensitive easy-to-use platforms has culminated in an increased interest for rapid response equipment-free alternatives to conventional diagnostic methods such as polymerase chain reaction, western-blot assay, etc. Furthermore, the poor stability and the bleaching behavior of several contemporary fluorescent reporters is a major obstacle in understanding the mechanism of viral infection thus retarding drug screening and development. Owing to their extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio as well as their quantum confinement and charge transfer properties, nanomaterials are desirable additives to sensing and imaging systems to amplify their signal response as well as temporal resolution. Their large surface area promotes biomolecular integration as well as efficacious signal transduction. Due to their hole mobility, photostability, resistance to photobleaching, and intense brightness, nanomaterials have a considerable edge over organic dyes for single virus tracking. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of combining carbon-allotrope, inorganic and organic-based nanomaterials with virus sensing and tracking methods, starting with the impact of human pathogenic viruses on the society. We address how different nanomaterials can be used in various virus sensing platforms (e.g. lab-on-a-chip, paper, and smartphone-based point-of-care systems) as well as in virus tracking applications. We discuss the enormous potential for the use of nanomaterials as simple, versatile, and affordable tools for detecting and tracing viruses infectious to humans, animals, plants as well as bacteria. We present latest examples in this direction by emphasizing major advantages and limitations.

Direct and Sensitive Detection of Dopamine Using Carbon Quantum Dots Based Refractive Index Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor

Abnormality of dopamine (DA), a vital neurotransmitter in the brain’s neuronal pathways, causes several neurological diseases. Rapid and sensitive sensors for DA detection are required for early diagnosis of such disorders. Herein, a carbon quantum dot (CQD)-based refractive index surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was designed. The sensor performance was evaluated for various concentrations of DA. Increasing DA levels yielded blue-shifted SPR dips. The experimental findings revealed an excellent sensitivity response of 0.138°/pM in a linear range from 0.001 to 100 pM and a high binding affinity of 6.234 TM⁻¹. The effects of varied concentrations of DA on the optical characteristics of CQD thin film were further proved theoretically. Increased DA levels decreased the thickness and real part of the refractive index of CQD film, according to fitting results. Furthermore, the observed reduction in surface roughness using AFM demonstrated that DA was bound to the sensor layer. This, in turn, explained the blue shift in SPR reflectance curves. This optical sensor offers great potential as a trustworthy solution for direct measurement due to its simple construction, high sensitivity, and other sensing features.

Evaluation of Structural and Optical Properties of Graphene Oxide-Polyvinyl Alcohol Thin Film and Its Potential for Pesticide Detection Using an Optical Method

In the present work, graphene oxide (GO)–polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites thin film has been successfully synthesized and prepared by spin coating techniques. Then, the properties and morphology of the samples were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Experimental FTIR results for GO–PVA thin film demonstrated the existence of important functional groups such as -CH2 stretching, C=O stretching, and O–H stretching. Furthermore, UV-Vis analysis indicated that the GO–PVA thin film had the highest absorbance that can be observed at wavelengths ranging from 200 to 500 nm with a band gap of 4.082 eV. The surface morphology of the GO–PVA thin film indicated the thickness increased when in contact with carbaryl. The incorporation of the GO–PVA thin film with an optical method based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon demonstrated a positive response for the detection of carbaryl pesticide as low as 0.02 ppb. This study has successfully proposed that the GO–PVA thin film has high potential as a polymer nanomaterial-based SPR sensor for pesticide detection.

Plasmonic Biosensors: Review

Biosensors have globally been considered as biomedical diagnostic tools required in abundant areas including the development of diseases, detection of viruses, diagnosing ecological pollution, food monitoring, and a wide range of other diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical research. Recently, the broadly emerging and promising technique of plasmonic resonance has proven to provide label-free and highly sensitive real-time analysis when used in biosensing applications. In this review, a thorough discussion regarding the most recent techniques used in the design, fabrication, and characterization of plasmonic biosensors is conducted in addition to a comparison between those techniques with regard to their advantages and possible drawbacks when applied in different fields.

Insight into prognostics, diagnostics, and management strategies for SARS CoV-2

The foremost challenge in countering infectious diseases is the shortage of effective therapeutics. The emergence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has posed a great menace to the public health system globally, prompting unprecedented endeavors to contain the virus. Many countries have organized research programs for therapeutics and management development. However, the longstanding process has forced authorities to implement widespread infrastructures for detailed prognostic and diagnostics study of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS CoV-2). This review discussed nearly all the globally developed diagnostic methodologies reported for SARS CoV-2 detection. We have highlighted in detail the approaches for evaluating COVID-19 biomarkers along with the most employed nucleic acid- and protein-based detection methodologies and the causes of their severe downfall and rejection. As the variable variants of SARS CoV-2 came into the picture, we captured the breadth of newly integrated digital sensing prototypes comprised of plasmonic and field-effect transistor-based sensors along with commercially available food and drug administration (FDA) approved detection kits. However, more efforts are required to exploit the available resources to manufacture cheap and robust diagnostic methodologies. Likewise, the visualization and characterization tools along with the current challenges associated with waste-water surveillance, food security, contact tracing, and their role during this intense period of the pandemic have also been discussed. We expect that the integrated data will be supportive and aid in the evaluation of sensing technologies not only in current but also future pandemics.

Plasmonic nanosensors for point-of-care biomarker detection

Advancement of materials along with their fascinating properties play increasingly important role in facilitating the rapid progress in medicine. An excellent example is the recent development of biosensors based on nanomaterials that induce surface plasmon effect for screening biomarkers of various diseases ranging from cancer to Covid-19. The recent global pandemic re-confirmed the trend of real-time diagnosis in public health to be in point-of-care (POC) settings that can screen interested biomarkers at home, or literally anywhere else, at any time. Plasmonic biosensors, thanks to its versatile designs and extraordinary sensitivities, can be scaled into small and portable devices for POC diagnostic tools. In the meantime, efforts are being made to speed up, simplify and lower the cost of the signal readout process including converting the conventional heavy laboratory instruments into lightweight handheld devices. This article reviews the recent progress on the design of plasmonic nanomaterial-based biosensors for biomarker detection with a perspective of POC applications. After briefly introducing the plasmonic detection working mechanisms and devices, the selected highlights in the field focusing on the technology's design including nanomaterials development, structure assembly, and target applications are presented and analyzed. In parallel, discussions on the sensor's current or potential applicability in POC diagnosis are provided. Finally, challenges and opportunities in plasmonic biosensor for biomarker detection, such as the current Covid-19 pandemic and its testing using plasmonic biosensor and incorporation of machine learning algorithms are discussed.

Clustered Detection of Eleven Phthalic Acid Esters by Fluorescence of Graphene Quantum Dots Displaced from Gold Nanoparticles

A gold nanoparticle-quenched graphene quantum dot-based aptasensor was developed to perform clustered detection of 11 phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The binding of the target PAEs to the aptasensor frees the graphene quantum dots that are otherwise quenched by the carrier gold nanoparticle. The resultant fluorescence upon excitation is proportional to the number of freed graphene quantum dots and hence the target PAE concentration. The synthesis of the proposed aptasensor was first verified step-by-step via FT-IR measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence measurement. Selectivity was evaluated for individual and combined target PAEs and compared against seven non-PAE endocrine disrupting compounds. The proposed aptasensor successfully quantified 11 PAEs in test samples with varying concentrations of 0.001-50 ng PAEs/mL and demonstrated a limit of detection of ∼4 pg./mL. Finally, the AuNP-gQD aptasensor was employed to detect multiple combinations of commonly regulated PAEs (DBP, DIBP, DEHP, and BBP). The recovery (%) for all four PAEs combination in environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 ng/mL were ∼100%.

Two-dimensional material-based virus detection

Cost-effective, rapid, and accurate virus detection technologies play key roles in reducing viral transmission. Prompt and accurate virus detection enables timely treatment and effective quarantine of virus carrier, and therefore effectively reduces the possibility of large-scale spread. However, conventional virus detection techniques often suffer from slow response, high cost or sophisticated procedures. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been used as promising sensing platforms for the high-performance detection of a variety of chemical and biological substances. The unique properties of 2D materials, such as large specific area, active surface interaction with biomolecules and facile surface functionalization, provide advantages in developing novel virus detection technologies with fast response and high sensitivity. Furthermore, 2D materials possess versatile and tunable electronic, electrochemical and optical properties, making them ideal platforms to demonstrate conceptual sensing techniques and explore complex sensing mechanisms in next-generation biosensors. In this review, we first briefly summarize the virus detection techniques with an emphasis on the current efforts in fighting again COVID-19. Then, we introduce the preparation methods and properties of 2D materials utilized in biosensors, including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and other 2D materials. Furthermore, we discuss the working principles of various virus detection technologies based on emerging 2D materials, such as field-effect transistor-based virus detection, electrochemical virus detection, optical virus detection and other virus detection techniques. Then, we elaborate on the essential works in 2D material-based high-performance virus detection. Finally, our perspective on the challenges and future research direction in this field is discussed.

G-quadruplex microspheres-based optical RNA biosensor for arthropod-borne virus pathogen detection: A proof-of-concept with dengue serotype 2

Dengue virus (DENV) is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus and that the detection of viral RNA itself is highly desirable, which can be achieved by using RNA biosensor diagnostic method. Herein, acrylic micropolymer-based optical RNA biosensor was developed by binding anionic copper(II) phthalocyanine (CPC) planar aromatic ligand to the G-quadruplex DNA probe via end-stacking with π-system of the guanine (G) quartet, and a blue coloration was developed on the G-quadruplex microspheres. Hybridization of G-quadruplex DNA probe with target DENV serotype 2 (DENV2) RNA unfolded the G-quadruplex, and rendering release of the CPC planar optical label, causing discoloration of the G-quadruplex microbiosensor. Optical characterization of the RNA biosensor was performed by means of fiber optic reflectance spectrophotometer at maximum reflectance wavelength of 774 nm. The reflectance response enhancement of the RNA-responsive G-quadruplex-based reflectometric biosensor was linearly proportional to the target oligo DENV2 RNA concentration in the range of 2 zM-2 μM, with a 0.447 zM limit of detection and a rapid response time of 30 min. Heightening in the reflectance signal based on structural transition of G-quadruplex in response to target RNA was successfully implemented in real-time DENV2 detection in non-invasive human fluid samples (i.e. saliva and urine) under informed consent.

Femtomolar detection of dopamine using surface plasmon resonance sensor based on chitosan/graphene quantum dots thin film

Due to the crucial role of dopamine (DA) in health and peripheral nervous systems, it is particularly important to develop an efficient and accurate sensor to monitor and determine DA concentrations for diagnostic purposes and diseases prevention. Up to now, using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors in DA determination is very limited and its application still at the primary stage. In this work, a simple and ultra-sensitive SPR sensor was constructed for DA detection by preparation of chitosan- graphene quantum dots (CS-GQDs) thin film as the sensing layer. Other SPR measurements were conducted using different sensing layers; GQDs, CS for comparison. The proposed thin films were prepared by spin coating technique. The developed CS-GQDs thin film-based SPR sensor was successfully tested in DA concentration range from 0 fM to 1 pM. The designed SPR sensor showed outstanding performance in detecting DA sensitively (S = 0.011°/fM, R² = 0.8174) with low detection limit of 1.0 fM has been achieved for the first time. The increased angular shift of SPR dip, narrow full width half maximum of the SPR curves, excellent signal-to-noise ratio and figure of merit, and a binding affinity constant (K_A) of 2.962 PM^-1 demonstrated the potential of this sensor to detect DA with high accuracy. Overall, it was concluded that the proposed sensor would serve as a valuable tool in clinical diagnostic for the serious neurological disorders. This in turns has a significant socio-economic impact.

Optical Biosensors for Diagnostics of Infectious Viral Disease: A Recent Update

The design and development of biosensors, analytical devices used to detect various analytes in different matrices, has emerged. Biosensors indicate a biorecognition element with a physicochemical analyzer or detector, i.e., a transducer. In the present scenario, various types of biosensors have been deployed in healthcare and clinical research, for instance, biosensors for blood glucose monitoring. Pathogenic microbes are contributing mediators of numerous infectious diseases that are becoming extremely serious worldwide. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 is one of the most recent examples of such communal and deadly diseases. In efforts to work towards the efficacious treatment of pathogenic viral contagions, a fast and precise detection method is of the utmost importance in biomedical and healthcare sectors for early diagnostics and timely countermeasures. Among various available sensor systems, optical biosensors offer easy-to-use, fast, portable, handy, multiplexed, direct, real-time, and inexpensive diagnosis with the added advantages of specificity and sensitivity. Many progressive concepts and extremely multidisciplinary approaches, including microelectronics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs), nanotechnologies, molecular biology, and biotechnology with chemistry, are used to operate optical biosensors. A portable and handheld optical biosensing device would provide fast and reliable results for the identification and quantitation of pathogenic virus particles in each sample. In the modern day, the integration of intelligent nanomaterials in the developed devices provides much more sensitive and highly advanced sensors that may produce the results in no time and eventually help clinicians and doctors enormously. This review accentuates the existing challenges engaged in converting laboratory research to real-world device applications and optical diagnostics methods for virus infections. The review's background and progress are expected to be insightful to the researchers in the sensor field and facilitate the design and fabrication of optical sensors for life-threatening viruses with broader applicability to any desired pathogens.

Micro and Nanoscale Technologies for Diagnosis of Viral Infections

Viral infection is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The growth of globalization significantly increases the risk of virus spreading, making it a global threat to future public health. In particular, the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak emphasizes the importance of devices and methods for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective diagnosis of viral infections in the early stages by which their quick and global spread can be controlled. Micro and nanoscale technologies have attracted tremendous attention in recent years for a variety of medical and biological applications, especially in developing diagnostic platforms for rapid and accurate detection of viral diseases. This review addresses advances of microneedles, microchip-based integrated platforms, and nano- and microparticles for sampling, sample processing, enrichment, amplification, and detection of viral particles and antigens related to the diagnosis of viral diseases. Additionally, methods for the fabrication of microchip-based devices and commercially used devices are described. Finally, challenges and prospects on the development of micro and nanotechnologies for the early diagnosis of viral diseases are highlighted.

Sensing Methods for Hazardous Phenolic Compounds Based on Graphene and Conducting Polymers-Based Materials

It has been known for years that the phenolic compounds are able to exert harmful effects toward living organisms including humans due to their high toxicity. Living organisms were exposed to these phenolic compounds as they were released into the environment as waste products from several fast-growing industries. In this regard, tremendous efforts have been made by researchers to develop sensing methods for the detection of these phenolic compounds. Graphene and conducting polymers-based materials have arisen as a high potential sensing layer to improve the performance of the developed sensors. Henceforth, this paper reviews the existing investigations on graphene and conducting polymer-based materials incorporated with various sensors that aimed to detect hazardous phenolic compounds, i.e., phenol, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4-dimethylphenol. The whole picture and up-to-date information on the graphene and conducting polymers-based sensors are arranged in systematic chronological order to provide a clearer insight in this research area. The future perspectives of this study are also included, and the development of sensing methods for hazardous phenolic compounds using graphene and conducting polymers-based materials is expected to grow more in the future.

Design and Analysis of a Single System of Impedimetric Biosensors for the Detection of Mosquito-Borne Viruses

The treatment for mosquito-borne viral diseases such as dengue virus (DENV), zika virus (ZIKV), and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has become difficult due to delayed diagnosis processes. In addition, sharing the same transmission media and similar symptoms at the early stage of infection of these diseases has become more critical for early diagnosis. To overcome this, a common platform that can identify the virus with high sensitivity and selectivity, even for the different serotypes, is in high demand. In this study, we have attempted an electrochemical impedimetric method to detect the ZIKV, DENV, and CHIKV using their corresponding antibody-conjugated sensor electrodes. The significance of this method is emphasized on the fabrication of a common matrix of gold-polyaniline and sulfur, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposites (Au-PAni-N,S-GQDs), which have a strong impedimetric response based only on the conjugated antibody, resulting in minimum cross-reactivity for the detection of various mosquito-borne viruses, separately. As a result, four serotypes of DENV and ZIKV, and CHIKV have been detected successfully with an LOD of femtogram mL-1.

Exploration on Structural and Optical Properties of Nanocrystalline Cellulose/Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) Thin Film for Potential Plasmonic Sensing Application

There are extensive studies on the development of composite solutions involving various types of materials. Therefore, this works aims to incorporate two polymers of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and poly(3,4-ethylenethiophene) (PEDOT) to develop a composite thin film via the spin-coating method. Then, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is employed to confirm the functional groups of the NCC/PEDOT thin film. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) results revealed a relatively homogeneous surface with the roughness of the NCC/PEDOT thin film being slightly higher compared with individual thin films. Meanwhile, the ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) spectrometer evaluated the optical properties of synthesized thin films, where the absorbance peaks can be observed around a wavelength of 220 to 700 nm. An optical band gap of 4.082 eV was obtained for the composite thin film, which is slightly lower as compared with a single material thin film. The NCC/PEDOT thin film was also incorporated into a plasmonic sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance principle to evaluate the potential for sensing mercury ions in an aqueous medium. Resultantly, the NCC/PEDOT thin film shows a positive response in detecting the various concentrations of mercury ions. In conclusion, this work has successfully developed a new sensing layer in fabricating an effective and potential heavy metal ions sensor.

DNA-Modified Plasmonic Sensor for the Direct Detection of Virus Biomarkers from the Blood

The rapid spread of viral infections demands early detection strategies to minimize proliferation of the disease. Here, we demonstrate a plasmonic biosensor to detect Dengue virus, which was chosen as a model, via its nonstructural protein NS1 biomarker. The sensor is functionalized with a synthetic single-stranded DNA oligonucleotide and provides high affinity toward NS1 protein present in the virus genome. We demonstrate the detection of NS1 protein at a concentration of 0.1-10 μg/mL in bovine blood using an on-chip microfluidic plasma separator integrated with the plasmonic sensor which covers the clinical threshold of 0.6 μg/mL of high risk of developing Dengue hemorrhagic fever. The conceptual and practical demonstration shows the translation feasibility of these microfluidic optical biosensors for early detection of a wide range of viral infections, providing a rapid clinical diagnosis of infectious diseases directly from minimally processed biological samples at point of care locations.

Monitoring Solid-Phase Reactions in Self-Assembled Monolayers by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Nanopatterned surfaces enhance incident electromagnetic radiation and thereby enable the detection and characterization of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), for instance in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Herein, Au nanohole arrays, developed and characterized as SERS substrates, are exemplarily used for monitoring a solid-phase deprotection and a subsequent copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition "click" reaction, performed directly on the corresponding SAMs. The SERS substrate was found to be highly reliable in terms of signal reproducibility and chemical stability. Furthermore, the intermediates and the product of the solid-phase synthesis were identified by SERS. The spectra of the immobilized compounds showed minor differences compared to spectra of the microcrystalline solids. With its uniform SERS signals and the high chemical stability, the platform paves the way for monitoring molecular manipulations in surface functionalization applications.

A review on plasmonic and metamaterial based biosensing platforms for virus detection

Due to changes in our climate and constant loss of habitat for animals, new pathogens for humans are constantly erupting. SARS-CoV-2 virus, become so infectious and deadly that they put new challenge to the whole technological advancement of healthcare. Within this very decade, several other deadly virus outbreaks were witnessed by humans such as Zika virus, Ebola virus, MERS-coronavirus etc. and there might be even more infectious and deadlier diseases in the horizon. Though conventional techniques have succeeded in detecting these viruses to some extent, these techniques are time-consuming, costly, and require trained human-resources. Plasmonic metamaterial based biosensors might pave the way to low-cost rapid virus detection. So this review discusses in details, the latest development in plasmonics and metamaterial based biosensors for virus, viral particles and antigen detection and the future direction of research in this field.

Application of selected biosensor techniques in clinical diagnostics

INTRODUCTION

Examination of disease biomarkers mostly performed on crude materials, such as serum, meets some obstacles, resulting from sample complexity and the wide range of concentrations and sizes of the components. Techniques currently used in clinical diagnostics are usually time-consuming and expensive. The more sensitive and portable devices are needed for early diagnostics. Chemical sensors are devices that convert chemical information into parameters suitable for fast and precise processing and measurement.

AREA COVERED

We review the use of biosensors and their possible application in early diagnostics of some diseases like cancer or viral infections. We focus on different types of biorecognition and some technical modifications, lowering the limit of detection potentially attractive to medical practitioners.

EXPERT OPINION

Among the new diagnostic strategies, the use of biosensors is of increasing interest. In these techniques, the capture ligand interacts with the analyte of interest. Measuring interactions between partners in real time by surface plasmon resonance yields valuable information about kinetics and affinity in a short time and without labels. Importantly, the tendency in such techniques is to make biosensor devices smaller and the test results apparent with the naked eye, so they can be used in point-of-care medicine.

Dengue Detection: Advances in Diagnostic Tools from Conventional Technology to Point of Care

The dengue virus (DENV) is a vector-borne flavivirus that infects around 390 million individuals each year with 2.5 billion being in danger. Having access to testing is paramount in preventing future infections and receiving adequate treatment. Currently, there are numerous conventional methods for DENV testing, such as NS1 based antigen testing, IgM/IgG antibody testing, and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). In addition, novel methods are emerging that can cut both cost and time. Such methods can be effective in rural and low-income areas throughout the world. In this paper, we discuss the structural evolution of the virus followed by a comprehensive review of current dengue detection strategies and methods that are being developed or commercialized. We also discuss the state of art biosensing technologies, evaluated their performance and outline strategies to address challenges posed by the disease. Further, we outline future guidelines for the improved usage of diagnostic tools during recurrence or future outbreaks of DENV.

Electrochemical and Electrochemiluminescence Dendrimer-based Nanostructured Immunosensors for Tumor Marker Detection: A Review

The usage of dendrimers or cascade molecules in the biomedical area has recently attracted much attention worldwide. Furthermore, dendrimers are interesting in clinical and pre-clinical applications due to their unique characteristics. Cancer is one of the most widespread challenges and important diseases, which has the highest mortality rate. In this review, the recent advances and developments (from 2009 up to 2019) in the field of electrochemical and electroluminescence immunosensors for detection of the cancer markers are presented. Moreover, this review covers the basic fabrication principles and types of electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence dendrimer-based immunosensors. In this review, we have categorized the current dendrimer based-electrochemical/ electroluminescence immunosensors into five groups: dendrimer/ magnetic particles, dendrimer/ferrocene, dendrimer/metal nanoparticles, thiol-containing dendrimer, and dendrimer/quantum dots based-immunosensors.

Recent Advances on Detection of Insecticides Using Optical Sensors

Insecticides are enormously important to industry requirements and market demands in agriculture. Despite their usefulness, these insecticides can pose a dangerous risk to the safety of food, environment and all living things through various mechanisms of action. Concern about the environmental impact of repeated use of insecticides has prompted many researchers to develop rapid, economical, uncomplicated and user-friendly analytical method for the detection of insecticides. In this regards, optical sensors are considered as favorable methods for insecticides analysis because of their special features including rapid detection time, low cost, easy to use and high selectivity and sensitivity. In this review, current progresses of incorporation between recognition elements and optical sensors for insecticide detection are discussed and evaluated well, by categorizing it based on insecticide chemical classes, including the range of detection and limit of detection. Additionally, this review aims to provide powerful insights to researchers for the future development of optical sensors in the detection of insecticides.

Cellulose and Vanadium Plasmonic Sensor to Measure Ni2+ Ions

A novel vanadium–cellulose composite thin film-based on angular interrogation surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for ppb-level detection of Ni(II) ion was developed. Experimental results show that the sensor has a linear response to the Ni(II) ion concentrations in the range of 2–50 ppb with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.9910. This SPR sensor can attain a maximum sensitivity (0.068° ppb−1), binding affinity constant (1.819 × 106 M−1), detection accuracy (0.3034 degree−1), and signal-to-noise-ratio (0.0276) for Ni(II) ion detection. The optical properties of thin-film targeting Ni(II) ions in different concentrations were obtained by fitting the SPR reflectance curves using the WinSpall program. All in all, the proposed Au/MPA/V–CNCs–CTA thin-film-based surface plasmon resonance sensor exhibits better sensing performance than the previous film-based sensor and demonstrates a wide and promising technology candidate for environmental monitoring applications in the future.
