Fabrication of easy separable and reusable MIL-125(Ti)/MIL-53(Fe) binary MOF/CNT/Alginate composite microbeads for tetracycline removal from water bodies

Enhanced Fenton Degradation of Tetracycline over Cerium-Doped MIL88-A/g-C3N4: Catalytic Performance and Mechanism

Since enormous amounts of antibiotics are consumed daily by millions of patients all over the world, tons of pharmaceutical residuals reach aquatic bodies. Accordingly, our study adopted the Fenton catalytic degradation approach to conquer such detrimental pollutants. (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A was fabricated by the hydrothermal method; then, it was supported on the surface of g-C3N4 sheets using the post-synthetic approach to yield a heterogeneous Fenton-like (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 catalyst for degrading the tetracycline hydrochloride drug. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed using FT-IR, SEM-EDX, XRD, BET, SEM, and XPS. The pH level, the H2O2 concentration, the reaction temperature, the catalyst dose, and the initial TC concentration were all examined as influencing factors of TC degradation efficiency. Approximately 92.44% of the TC was degraded within 100 min under optimal conditions: pH = 7, catalyst dosage = 0.01 g, H2O2 concentration = 100 mg/L, temperature = 25 °C, and TC concentration = 50 mg/L. It is noteworthy that the practical outcomes revealed how the Fenton-like process and adsorption work together. The degradation data were well-inspected by first-order and second-order models to define the reaction rate. The synergistic interaction between the (Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 components produces a continuous redox cycle of two active metal species and the electron-rich source of g-C3N4. The quenching test demonstrates that •OH is the primary active species for degrading TC in the H2O2-(Ce0.33Fe) MIL-88A/10%g-C3N4 system. The GC-MS spectrum elucidates the yielded intermediates from degrading the TC molecules.

Tackling antibiotic contaminations in wastewater with novel Modified-MOF nanostructures: A study of molecular simulations and DFT calculations

The contamination of wastewater with antibiotics has emerged as a critical global challenge, with profound implications for environmental integrity and human well-being. Adsorption techniques have been meticulously investigated and developed to mitigate and alleviate their effects. In this study, we have investigated the adsorption behaviour of Erythromycin (ERY), Gentamicin (GEN), Levofloxacin (LEVO), and Metronidazole (MET) antibiotics as pharmaceutical contaminants (PHCs) on amide-functionalized (RC (=O)NH2)/MIL-53 (Al) (AMD/ML53A), using molecular simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on our DFT calculations, it becomes apparent that the adsorption tendencies of antibiotics are predominantly governed by the presence of AMD functional groups on the adsorbent surface. Specifically, hydrogen bonding (HB) and van der Waals (vdW) interactions between antibiotics and AMD groups serve as the primary mechanisms facilitating adsorption. Furthermore, we have observed that the adsorption behaviors of these antibiotics are influenced by their respective functional groups, molecular shapes, and sizes. Our molecular simulations delved into how the AMD/ML53A surfaces interact with antibiotics as PHCs. Moreover, various chemical quantum descriptors based on Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMO) were explored to elucidate the extent of AMD/ML53A adsorption and to assess potential alterations in their electronic properties throughout the adsorption process. Monte Carlo simulation showed that ERY molecules adsorb stronger to the adsorbent in acidic and basic conditions than other contaminants, with high energies: -404.47 kcal/mol in acidic and -6375.26 kcal/mol in basic environments. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed parallel orientation for the ERY molecule's adsorption on AMD/ML53A with 80% rejection rate. In conclusion, our study highlighted the importance of modeling in developing practical solutions for removing antibiotics as PHCs from wastewater. The insights gained from our calculations can facilitate the design of more effective adsorption materials, ultimately leading to a more hygienic and sustainable ecosystem.

Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Batch Experimental Studies and Statistical Modeling for the Effective Removal of Tetracycline from Wastewater Using Bimetallic Zn-Cu-Metal-Organic Framework@Hydrogel Composite Beads

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on an upsurge as more and more broad-spectrum antibiotics are being used haphazardly, resulting in imbalances in the ecosystem and disrupting common/systematic clinical protocols. To combat this issue, metal-organic framework embedded zinc-copper-benzenedicarboxylate@calcium alginate composite beads (Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs) were synthesized and utilized for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from water. The surface morphology, presence of functional groups, surface area, and thermal stability of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Batch adsorption experiments were also carried out to optimize the adsorption performance of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs for TC by adjusting the key parameters, including pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and initial concentration of TC. From the RSM model, 96.8% removal of TC takes place under the optimum conditions (pH = 7.3, mass = 17.2 mg, concentration = 21.3 ppm, time = 3.4 h, and temperature = 31.8 °C), which aligns closely with the experimental batch study, where the addition of 20 mg of adsorbent to a 20 mL TC solution (20 mg/L) at a pH of 7 and a temperature of 27 °C yielded an impressive TC removal efficiency of 96.55% within 180 min. Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs possess homogeneous adsorption surfaces, and TC is adsorbed via monolayer chemisorption, according to the results derived from the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process is both endothermic and spontaneous. In their entirety, the synthesized Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs exhibit certain operational advantages, such as simple separation, satisfactory adsorption performance, and decent recyclability, indicating their viability for industrial application of elimination of TC residues from aquatic environments.

Fabrication of magnesium oxide-calcium alginate hydrogel for scaffolding yttrium and neodymium from aqueous solutions

In this research, the possibility of using sustainable nano-MgO/Ca-alginate beads for efficient sorption of some rare earth metal ions such as neodymium(III) and yttrium(III) from an aqueous acidic solution was explored. The nano-MgO/Ca-alginate beads adsorbent was characterized before and after sorption of Nd(III) and Y(III) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Batch sorption parameters were investigated, such as contact time, initial metal ion concentration, and adsorbent dose (V/m). The calculated experimental results showed that the suitable selected sorption conditions were carried out using 100 mg/L of Nd(III) and Y(III) with nano MgO/Ca-alginate beads (contact time = 90 min, pH = 2, V/m = 0.05 L/g). The maximum sorption capacity of 0.1 g of nano MgO/Ca-alginate was found to be 7.85 mg/g and 5.60 mg/g for Nd(III) and Y(III), respectively. The desorption of Nd(III) and Y(III) from the loaded nano MgO/Ca-alginate was achieved with 1.0 M sulfamic acid and found to be 51.0% and 44.2%, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters for the nano MgO/Ca-alginate/Nd/Y system show that the positive charge of ΔHo confirmed the endothermic nature of the sorption process, ΔSo (positive) indicates an increase in reaction system disordering, and ΔGo (negative) indicates a spontaneous process. These kinetic results indicate that the sorption process of Nd(III) and Y(III) on nano MgO/Ca-alginate beads is performed by the chemisorption process.

Advantages of Bimetallic Organic Frameworks in the Adsorption, Catalysis and Detection for Water Contaminants

The binary metal organic framework (MOF) is composed of two heterometallic ions bonded to an organic ligand. Compared with monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs have greatly improved in terms of structure, porosity, active site, adsorption, selectivity, and stability, which has attracted wide attention. At present, many effective strategies have been designed for the synthesis of bimetallic MOF-based nanomaterials with specific morphology, structure, and function. The results show that bimetallic MOF-based nanocomposites could achieve multiple synergistic effects, which will greatly improve their research in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, energy storage, sensing, and so on. In this review, the main preparation methods of bimetallic MOFs-based materials are summarized, with emphasis on their applications in adsorption, catalysis, and detection of target pollutants in water environments, and perspectives on the future development of bimetallic MOFs-based nanomaterials in the field of water are presented.

Enhanced performance of nanocomposite membrane developed on sulfonated poly (1, 4-phenylene ether-ether-sulfone) with zeolite imidazole frameworks for fuel cell application

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) have received a lot of interest and use metal-organic frameworks (MOF)/polymer nanocomposite membranes. Zeolite imidazole framework-90 (ZIF-90) was employed as an addition in the sulfonated poly (1, 4-phenylene ether-ether-sulfone) (SPEES) matrix in order to investigate the proton conductivity in a novel nanocomposite membrane made of SPEES/ ZIF. The high porosity, free surface, and presence of the aldehyde group in the ZIF-90 nanostructure have a substantial impact on enhancing the mechanical, chemical, thermal, and proton conductivity capabilities of the SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes. The results indicate that the utilization of SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes with 3wt% ZIF-90 resulted in enhanced proton conductivity of up to 160 mS/cm at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH). This is a significant improvement compared to the SPEES membrane which exhibited a proton conductivity of 55 mS/cm under the same conditions, indicating a 1.9-fold increase in performance. Furthermore, the SPEES/ZIF-90/3 membrane exhibited a remarkable 79% improvement in maximum power density, achieving a value of 0.52 W/cm² at 0.5 V and 98% RH, which is 79% higher than that of the pristine SPEES membrane.

Fabricating Materials of Institute Lavoisier-53(Fe)/zeolite imidazolate framework-8 hybrid materials as high-efficiency and reproducible adsorbents for removing organic pollutants

Environmental pollution by emerging contaminants has become an urgent problem. Herein, novel binary metal-organic framework hybrids were constructed from Materials of Institute Lavoisier-53(Fe) (MIL-53(Fe)) and zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for the first time. A battery of characterizations were employed to determine the MIL/ZIF hybrids' properties and morphology. Furthermore, the MIL/ZIF towards toxic antibiotics (tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin) were studied to explore their adsorption abilities. The present work disclosed that the obtained MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 possessed an eminent specific surface area with an admirable removal efficiency of tetracycline (97.4%), ciprofloxacin (97.1%) and ofloxacin (92.4%), respectively. The tetracycline adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and this process was more compatible with the Langmuir isotherm model with the highest adsorption capacity of 215.0 mg g^-1. Moreover, the process of removing tetracycline was proved to be spontaneous and exothermic by the thermodynamic results. Furthermore, the MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 towards tetracycline exhibited significant regeneration ability. The effects of pH, dosage, interfering ions and oscillation frequency on tetracycline adsorption capacity and removal efficiency were also investigated. The primary factors contributing to the decent adsorption ability between MIL-53(Fe)/ZIF-8 = 2:3 and tetracycline included electrostatic, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and weak coordination interactions. Additionally, we also investigated the adsorption ability in real wastewater. Thus, the proposed binary metal-organic framework hybrid materials can be deemed a promising adsorbent in wastewater purification.

Progresses in lignin, cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, alginate, and gum/carbon nanotube (nano)composites for environmental applications: A review

Water sources are becoming increasingly scarce, and they are contaminated by industrial, residential, and agricultural waste-derived organic and inorganic contaminants. These contaminants may pollute the air, water, and soil in addition to invading the ecosystem. Because carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can undergo surface modification, they can combine with other substances to create nanocomposites (NCs), including biopolymers, metal nanoparticles, proteins, and metal oxides. Furthermore, biopolymers are significant classes of organic materials that are widely used for various applications. They have drawn attention due to their benefits such as environmental friendliness, availability, biocompatibility, safety, etc. As a result, the synthesis of a composite made of CNT and biopolymers can be very effective for a variety of applications, especially those involving the environment. In this review, we reported environmental applications (including removal of dyes, nitro compounds, hazardous materialsو toxic ions, etc.) of composites made of CNT and biopolymers such as lignin, cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, alginate, and gum. Also, the effect of different factors such as the medium pH, the pollutant concentration, temperature, and contact time on the adsorption capacity (AC) and the catalytic activity of the composite in the reduction or degradation of various pollutants has been systematically explained.

Graphene oxide incorporated cellulose acetate beads for efficient removal of methylene blue dye; isotherms, kinetic, mechanism and co-existing ions studies

In this investigation, new porous adsorbent beads were formulated via the incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) into cellulose acetate beads (CA) for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) dye. The experimental results signified that the adsorption of MB dye increased with the increase in the GO ratio from 10 to 25%. In addition, the adsorption process obeyed PSO kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reaching 369.85 mg/g. More importantly, it was proposed that the adsorption mechanism of MB dye onto GO@CA proceeded via electrostatic interactions, H-bonding, van der Waals forces, n-π and π -π interactions. Besides, the fabricated beads exhibited an excellent ability to recycle and reuse after five successive cycles. In addition, there was a high selectivity of GO@CA beads towards MB molecules in the presence of co-existing cations such as Fe2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+.

Adsorption of nitrophenol onto a novel Fe3O4-κ-carrageenan/MIL-125(Ti) composite: process optimization, isotherms, kinetics, and mechanism

Water pollution is a dreadful affair that has incessantly aggravated, exposing our planet to danger. In particular, the persistent nitro aromatic compound like nitrophenols causes anxiety to the researchers due to their hazardous impacts, excessive usage, and removal difficulty. For this purpose, a novel multi-featured composite was constructed based on κ-Carrageenan (κ-Carr), MOF (MIL-125(Ti)), and magnetic Fe3O4 for efficient adsorptive removal of o-nitrophenol (o-NP). Interestingly, BET measurements revealed the high surface area of Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) of about 163.27 m2/g, while VSM showed its excellent magnetic property (20.34 emu/g). The comparison study pointed out the synergistic effect between Fe3O4, κ-Carr, and MIL-125(Ti), forming a composite with an excellent adsorption performance toward o-NP. The adsorption data obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Freundlich isotherm model was better fitted than Langmuir and Temkin. Furthermore, Langmuir verified the supreme adsorption capacity of o-NP onto Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) since the computed qmax reached 320.26 mg/g at pH 6 and 25 °C. Furthermore, the XPS results postulated that the adsorption mechanism pf o-NP proceeded via H-bonding, π-π interaction, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Interestingly, Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) composite retained good adsorption characteristics after reusing for five cycles, suggesting its viable applicability as an efficient, renewable, and easy-separable adsorbent for removing nitro aromatic pollutants.

Specific nanoantibiotics for selective removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria: New insights in bacterial imprinting based on interfacial biomimetic mineralization

Antibiotic resistance has been a worsening global concern and selective elimination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) while retaining the co-existed beneficial bacteria has been essential in environmental protection, which having attracted considerable interest. In this work, by integrating the whole cell imprinting and epitope imprinting strategy, magnetic bacterial imprinted polymers (BIPs) towards ARB were synthesized with interfacial biomimetic mineralization followed by a screening process. The binding data showed that the BIPs owned highly specific affinity towards the target bacteria. Taking advantage of this specific binding ability of BIPs, a two-step selective antimicrobial approach was developed. Remarkably, the BIP nanoantibiotics (nAbts) could efficiently destroy ARB without harming the beneficial bacteria. In comparison with the non-bacterial imprinted polymers, the biocompatible BIP nAbts showed a 12.5-fold increase in the survival percentage for the beneficial bacteria in wastewater. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that bacterial imprinting via interfacial biomimetic mineralization was developed, and also the first report of killing ARB without harming the beneficial bacteria in wastewater. We believe that this strategy provides a new insight into the design of novel affinity materials for the selective elimination of ARB in biological treatment for environmental protection.

Efficient adsorptive removal of paracetamol and thiazolyl blue from polluted water onto biosynthesized copper oxide nanoparticles

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) have received tremendous attention as efficient adsorbents owing to their low cost, desirable surface area, abundant active sites, potent textural characteristics and high adsorption capacities. However, CuONPs have not been employed to decontaminate water laden with increasing environmental contaminants such as thiazolyl blue and paracetamol. Herein, the adsorption of thiazolyl blue and paracetamol onto green synthesized CuONPs prepared from the aqueous leaf extract of Platanus occidentalis was studied. The BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD, EDX and pH point of zero charge showed the successful synthesis of CuONPs having desirable surface properties with a surface area of 58.76 m²/g and an average size of 82.13 nm. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 72.46 mg/g and 64.52 mg/g were obtained for thiazolyl blue and paracetamol, respectively. The Freundlich, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models were well fitted to the adsorption of both pollutants. The pH studies suggested the predominance of electrostatic and weaker intermolecular interactions in the adsorption of the thiazolyl blue and paracetamol, respectively. Spontaneous, physical, endothermic and random adsorption of the pollutants on CuONPs was obtained from the thermodynamic consideration. The biosynthesized CuONPs were found to be highly reusable and efficient for the adsorption of thiazolyl blue and paracetamol from water.

Amine-functionalized MOF-derived carbon materials for efficient removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solutions: simulation and adsorption studies

In this study, a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified MOF-derived carbon adsorbent (PEI@MDC) was proposed, which exhibited significant adsorption capacity for Congo Red (CR) in aqueous solutions. FT-IR and XPS results showed that PEI was successfully grafted onto MDC, increasing the content of amine groups on the surface of MDC. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, indicating that the adsorption of CR on PEI@MDC was covered by a single layer, and the adsorption process was controlled by chemical processes. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity at 30 °C was 1723.86 mg g^-1. Hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between CR and PEI@MDC surface functional groups were the main mechanisms controlling the adsorption process. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, PEI@MDC still showed a high adsorption capacity for CR, indicating that the adsorbent had an excellent regeneration ability.

MOF-Derived MnO/C Nanocomposites for High-Performance Supercapacitors

As ordered porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention in the field of energy conversion and storage due to their high specific surface area, permanent porosity, and tunable pore sizes. Here, MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposites with regular octahedral shape were synthesized using a Mn-based analogue of the MIL-100 framework (Mn-MIL-100, MIL: Matérial Institut Lavoisier) as the precursor. Using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM), MnO nanocages with a diameter of approximately 20 nm were recognized in the MnO/C nanocomposites fabricated, dispersed in a microporous carbon matrix homogeneously. The nanocages are composed of MnO nanoparticles with a diameter of approximately 2 nm and with a single crystal structure. The specific surface area of the as-prepared MnO/C octahedra decreases to 256 m² g^-1 from 507 m² g^-1 of the Mn-MIL-100 precursor, whereas the total pore volume increases to 0.245 cm³ g^-1, which is approximately 29% higher than that of the precursor (0.190 cm³ g^-1). Additionally, when utilized as an electrode for supercapacitors, the MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposite demonstrates a towering specific capacitance of 421 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 and good cycle stability (94%) after 5000 cycles. Our work reveals that the MnO nanoparticles in MOF-derived MnO/C nanocomposites exhibit nanocage structure characteristics, which might be inherited from the Mn-MIL-100 precursor with analogous supertetrahedron units.

Functionalized metal-organic framework-derived carbon: Effective adsorbent to eliminate methylene blue, a small cationic dye from water

Elimination of organic dyes from wastewater is very important for our safe environment and sound health. In this work, adsorptive removal of cationic dyes, especially small ones, was investigated with carbonaceous materials to develop a competitive adsorption technology. To improve the performance of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbons (MDCs) in dye adsorption, an MDC, derived from a MOF (MAF-6), was oxidatively functionalized with ammonium persulfate solutions (APSs). Although the porosity of pristine MDC decreased with functionalization via oxidation, functionalized MDCs (FMDCs), especially FMDC(1.0) that was obtained via treating MDC with APS (1.0 M), showed remarkable performances in the adsorption of small cationic dyes like methylene blue (MB) and azure B. For example, FMDC(1.0) had the maximum adsorption capacity (Q_o) of 625.0 mg/g (for MB) which is larger than any reported value with carbonaceous materials. Moreover, the obtained Q_o was around 4 and 2 times that of activated carbon with Q_o of 160 mg/g and MDC with Q_o of 298 mg/g, respectively. On the contrary, oxidative treatment of MDC was negative in adsorption of an anionic dye such as methyl orange. Moreover, the functionalized MDC was not very effective in the adsorption of cationic dyes with large sizes (like brilliant green, crystal violet, Janus green B, and rhodamine B) because of the limited pore size of the studied adsorbent FMDC(1.0). The remarkable adsorption of MB over FMDC(1.0) could be explained by electrostatic and π-π interactions. Finally, the facile recyclability of the FMDC(1.0) in MB adsorption was confirmed via successive adsorptions, FT-IR, and nitrogen adsorption; therefore, FMDC(1.0) can be suggested as a potential adsorbent to remove cationic dyes, especially with small molecular sizes.

Carbon-based nanocomposite materials with multifunctional attributes for environmental remediation of emerging pollutants

Carbon-based materials are among the most biosynthesized nanocomposites with excellent tunability and multifunctionality features, that other materials fail to demonstrate. Naturally occurring materials, such as alginate (Alg), can be combined and modified by linking the active moieties of various carbon-based materials of interest, such as graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and mesoporous silica nanocomposite (MSN), among others. Thus, several types of robust nanocomposites have been fabricated and deployed for environmental remediation of emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceutical compounds, toxic dyes, and other environmentally hazardous contaminants of emerging concern. Considering the above critiques and added features of carbon-based nanocomposites, herein, an effort has been made to spotlight the synergies of GO, CNTs, and MSN with Alg and their role in mitigating emerging pollutants. From the information presented in this work, it can be concluded that Alg is a material that has excellent potential. However, its use still requires further tests in different areas and other materials to carry out a holistic investigation that exploits its versatility for environmental remediation purposes.

Phytofabrication of bimetallic silver-copper/biochar nanocomposite for environmental and medical applications

In the current study, a novel, green, low-cost, and sustainable path for the phyto-fabrication of Ag-Cu biochar nanocomposite (Ag-Cu/biochar) by Atriplex halimus biomass and aqueous extract is described. Surface plasmon resonance peaks were detected at 450 nm and 580 nm signifying the formation of both silver and copper nanoparticles, respectively on the biochar surface. XRD analysis confirmed the crystal structure of the phytosynthesized Ag-Cu/biochar whereas FT-IR, SEM, EDX, and XPS analyses confirmed the successful phytofabrication of the composite. Ag and Cu nanoparticles loaded on the biochar surface were almost spherically-shaped with a particle size ranging from 25 nm to 45 nm. Zeta potential of -25.5 mV showed the stability of Ag-Cu/biochar. The potential of this novel nanocomposite in the removal of doxycycline (DOX) was evident under different conditions as it reached nearly 100% under the optimum reaction conditions (DOX concentration; 50 ppm, pH; 9, a dose of Ag-Cu/biochar; 0.01 g, temperature; 25 °C, and H₂O₂ concentration; 100 mM). The promising regeneration of Ag-Cu/biochar was evident as the removal efficiency was 81% after 6 consecutive cycles. Ag-Cu/biochar was also shown an excellent antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria as well a promising antioxidant activity.

Co-doped Fe-MIL-100 as an adsorbent for tetracycline removal from aqueous solution

In the study, Fe-MIL-100 was modified by adding Co²⁺ in the synthesis process; Co/Fe-MIL-100 was successfully synthesized and used to adsorb tetracycline. The addition of Co²⁺ increased the thermal stability of Fe-MIL-100 without changing the crystal structure. It was found that Co/Fe-MIL-100 exhibited satisfactory performance in tetracycline removal, the tetracycline removal efficiency reached almost 100% in the initial concentration range of 10-40 mg/L, and it still reached 82.38% under the condition of 60 mg/L tetracycline. Besides, the factors of tetracycline concentration, pH and inorganic anion on removal efficiency were explored. The coexistence of inorganic anion decreased the adsorption capacity of tetracycline due to the competitive adsorption. CO₃^2- had a more obvious inhibition effect on the adsorption efficiency of tetracycline than Cl^-. The fitting correlation coefficient of Langmuir model was higher and the kinetics better fitted by pseudo-second-order, respectively. As a result of its high removal efficiency and excellent recycling performance, it has great potential in application fields such as removing tetracycline from wastewater.

Reusable kaolin impregnated aminated chitosan composite beads for efficient removal of Congo red dye: isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies

In this investigation, Kaolin (K) impregnated aminated chitosan (AM-CTS) composite beads were fabricated with multi-features including low-cost, high performance, renewable and ease of separation for adsorption of anionic Congo red (CR) dye. Characterization tools such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, BET, XPS and Zeta potential were thoroughly employed to confirm the successful formulation process. The results revealed that K@ AM-CTS composite beads displayed higher specific surface area (128.52 m²/g), while the thermal stability was prominently improved compared to pure AM-CTS. In addition, the adsorption equilibrium of CR dye was accomplished rapidly and closely gotten within 45 min. The removal efficiency was significantly enriched and reached 90.7% with increasing kaolin content up to 0.75%, compared to 20.3 and 58% for pristine kaolin and AM-CTS, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-first order kinetic model, while data were agreed with the Freundlich isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 104 mg/g at pH 6. Furthermore, D–R isotherm model demonstrated the physical adsorption process of CR dye, which includes the electrostatic interactions, ion exchange and H-bonding. Thermodynamics evidenced the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Interestingly, the developed K@AM-CTS composites beads showed better reusability for eight consecutive cycles, suggesting their feasible applicability for adsorptive removal anionic dyes from polluted aquatic bodies.

Lightweight and anisotropic cellulose nanofibril/rectorite composite sponges for efficient dye adsorption and selective separation

Constructing lightweight and porous adsorbents which can effectively remove dye contaminants is of great significance in the field of the sewage treatment. In this work, anisotropic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) composite sponges assisted by rectorites are fabricated through directional freeze-drying. The resulted composite sponge exhibits the superior saturated adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of 120.0 mg/g and 96.1% for methylene blue (MB), respectively, which is better than the pure CNF sponge and rectorite powders. This is attributed to the strong electrostatic interaction between CNFs and MB, and good cation exchange property of rectorites inside the three-dimensional (3D) highly porous composite sponge. The MB adsorption process of the composite sponge fits to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model well, which is affected by both boundary layer and intraparticle diffusion, resulting in a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 214.6 mg/g. Moreover, it also possesses a selective adsorption capacity for anionic and cationic dyes, which is expected to realize the separation treatment of different dyes according to actual application requirements.

Sustainable adsorptive removal of antibiotic residues by chitosan composites: An insight into current developments and future recommendations

During COVID-19 crisis, water pollution caused by pharmaceutical residuals have enormously aggravated since millions of patients worldwide are consuming tons of drugs daily. Antibiotics are the preponderance pharmaceutical pollutants in water bodies that surely cause a real threat to human life and ecosystems. The excellent characteristics of chitosan such as nontoxicity, easy functionality, biodegradability, availability in nature and the abundant hydroxyl and amine groups onto its backbone make it a promising adsorbent. Herein, we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of recent published research papers regarding the removal of antibiotics by chitosan composite-based adsorbents. The structure, ionic form, optimum removal pH and λ_max of the most common antibiotics including Tetracycline, Ciprofloxacin, Amoxicillin, Levofloxacin, Ceftriaxone, Erythromycin, Norfloxacin, Ofloxacin, Doxycycline, Cefotaxime and Sulfamethoxazole were summarized. The development of chitosan composite-based adsorbents in order to enhance their adsorption capacity, reusability and validity were presented. Moreover, the adsorption mechanisms of these antibiotics were explored to provide more information about adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Besides the dominant factors on the adsorption process including pH, dosage, coexisting ions, etc. were discussed. Moreover, conclusions and future recommendations are provided to inspire for further researches.

Novel reusable amine-functionalized cellulose acetate beads impregnated aminated graphene oxide for adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium ions

In this study, a multi-featured adsorbent was developed for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) ions. Herein, aminated graphene oxide (GO-NH₂) was firstly synthetized and incorporated into cellulose acetate beads (CA) which were followed by surface amine-functionalization process. Varies characterization tools such as FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TGA, XRD, BET, XPS and zeta potential were employed to ensure the successful fabrication of GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ composite beads. An enhancement in the adsorption performance was attained, while the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within only 60 min. Therefore, the adsorption capacity was boosted with increasing GO-NH₂ ratio in the beads matrix from 10 to 25%. Furthermore, the adsorption process agreed with Freundlich isotherm model with a supreme adsorption capacity of 410.21 mg/g at pH 2, while data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, thermodynamic studies denoted that the adsorption process was endothermic, randomness and spontaneous. The composite beads retained better adsorption characteristics for seven sequential cycles with ease of separation. The proposed adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ onto GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ surface occurred via the electrostatic interactions, reduction process and coordinate-covalent bonds. These findings hypothesize that the fabricated GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ beads could be act as easy-separable and reusable adsorbent for efficient adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ ions.

Novel Biogenic Synthesis of a Ag@Biochar Nanocomposite as an Antimicrobial Agent and Photocatalyst for Methylene Blue Degradation

The conventional synthesis of nanomaterials employing physical and chemical methods usually requires high cost and toxic chemicals. Thus, a facile, ecofriendly, cost-effective, novel, and sustainable route for the synthesis of a silver-loaded biochar nanocomposite (Ag@biochar) using Chenopodium ambrosioides leaf extract and biomass is reported for the first time in this study to advocate many of the principles of green chemistry such as safer solvents and auxiliaries. UV spectroscopic analysis at 420 nm indicated the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The band gap energy of Ag@biochar was 1.9 eV, confirming its potential use as a photocatalyst. Ag@biochar was found to be photoluminescent at 425 nm. AgNPs on the surface of biochar were predominantly spherical with a size range of 25-35 nm and a surface area of 47.61 m²/g. A zeta potential of -5.87 mV designated the stability of Ag@biochar. Testing the photocatalytic potential of Ag@biochar to remove methylene blue from wastewater demonstrated its high removal efficiency that reached 88.4% due to its high efficiency of electron transfer confirmed via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis and retained 70.65% after six cycles of reuse. Ag@biochar was shown to be a powerful broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent as it completely prevented the growth of Escherichia coli and also inhibited the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans with the inhibition zones of 19, 18, 22, and 16 mm, respectively.

Recent developments in alginate-based adsorbents for removing phosphate ions from wastewater: a review

The huge development of the industrial sector has resulted in the release of large quantities of phosphate anions which adversely affect the environment, human health, and aquatic ecosystems. Naturally occurring biopolymers have attracted considerable attention as efficient adsorbents for phosphate anions due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmentally-friendly nature, low-cost production, availability in nature, and ease of modification. Amongst them, alginate-based adsorbents are considered one of the most effective adsorbents for removing various types of pollutants from industrial wastewater. The presence of active COOH and OH^- groups along the alginate backbone facilitate its physical and chemical modifications and participate in various possible adsorption mechanisms of phosphate anions. Herein, we focus our attention on presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances in phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Modification of alginate by various materials, including clays, magnetic materials, layered double hydroxides, carbon materials, and multivalent metals, is addressed. The adsorption potentials of these modified forms for removing phosphate anions, in addition to their adsorption mechanisms are clearly discussed. It is concluded that ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, Lewis acid-base interaction and electrostatic interaction are the most common adsorption mechanisms of phosphate removal by alginate-based adsorbents. Pseudo-2^nd order and Freundlich isotherms were figured out to be the major kinetic and isotherm models for the removal process of phosphate. The research findings revealed that some issues, including the high cost of production, leaching, and low efficiency of recyclability of alginate-based adsorbents still need to be resolved. Future trends that could inspire further studies to find the best solutions for removing phosphate anions from aquatic systems are also elaborated, such as the synthesis of magnetic-based alginate and various-shaped alginate nanocomposites that are capable of preventing the leaching of the active materials.

Facile Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles for Anticancer, Antioxidant Applications, and Photocatalytic Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants

In the current study, a facile, rapid, and ecologically safe photosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that remained stable for 3 months is reported to advocate the main aspects of green chemistry, such as safer solvents and auxiliaries, and the use of renewable feedstock. Zi-AuNPs were phytosynthesized by the aqueous extract of Ziziphus spina-christi leaves, and numerous techniques were employed for their characterization. The results demonstrated the successful phytofabrication of crystalline AuNPs with brownish-black color, spherical nanoparticles with a size between 0 and 10 nm, a plasmon peak at 540 nm, and a surface charge of -25.7 mV. Zi-AuNPs showed an effective photodegradation efficiency (81.14%) against malachite green and a good recycling capacity of 69.2% after five cycles of regeneration. The cytotoxicity test by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay signified a high anticancer efficiency for both Zi-AuNPs and Z. spina-christi extract against human breast cancer cells (MCF7 cell line) with IC₅₀'s of 48 and 40.25 μg/mL, respectively. Highly efficient antioxidant capabilities were proven with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) removal percentages of 67.5% for Zi-AuNPs and 92.34% for Z. spina-christi extract.
