Facile fabrication of ternary MWCNTs/ZnO/Chitosan nanocomposite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and antibacterial activity

Introducing the antibacterial and photocatalytic degradation potentials of biosynthesized chitosan, chitosan-ZnO, and chitosan-ZnO/PVP nanoparticles

The development of nanomaterials has been speedily established in recent years, yet nanoparticles synthesized by traditional methods suffer unacceptable toxicity and the sustainability of the procedure for synthesizing such nanoparticles is inadequate. Consequently, green biosynthesis, which employs biopolymers, is gaining attraction as an environmentally sound alternative to less sustainable approaches. Chitosan-encapsulated nanoparticles exhibit exceptional antibacterial properties, offering a wide range of uses. Chitosan, obtained from shrimp shells, aided in the environmentally friendly synthesis of high-purity zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with desirable features such as the extraction yield (41%), the deacetylation (88%), and the crystallinity index (74.54%). The particle size of ZnO NPs was 12 nm, while that of chitosan-ZnO NPs was 21 nm, and the bandgap energies of these nanomaterials were 3.98 and 3.48, respectively. The strong antibacterial action was demonstrated by ZnO NPs, chitosan-ZnO NPs, and chitosan-ZnO/PVP, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria, making them appropriate for therapeutic use. The photocatalytic degradation abilities were also assessed for all nanoparticles. At a concentration of 6 × 10-5 M, chitosan removed 90.5% of the methylene blue (MB) dye, ZnO NPs removed 97.4%, chitosan-coated ZnO NPs removed 99.6%, while chitosan-ZnO/PVP removed 100%. In the case of toluidine blue (TB), at a concentration of 4 × 10-3 M, the respective efficiencies were 96.8%, 96.8%, 99.5%, and 100%, respectively. Evaluation of radical scavenger activity revealed increased scavenging of ABTS and DPPH radicals by chitosan-ZnO/PVP compared to individual zinc oxide or chitosan-ZnO, where the IC50 results were 0.059, 0.092, 0.079 mg/mL, respectively, in the ABTS test, and 0.095, 0.083, 0.061, and 0.064 mg/mL in the DPPH test, respectively. Moreover, in silico toxicity studies were conducted to predict the organ-specific toxicity through ProTox II software. The obtained results suggest the probable safety and the absence of organ-specific toxicity with all the tested samples.

Green biosynthesis of bimetallic ZnO@AuNPs with its formulation into cellulose derivative: biological and environmental applications

Nanoparticles (NPs) formulation in biopolymers is an attractive process for the researcher to decrease the disadvantages of NPs application alone. Bimetallic NPs are a promising formula of two NPs that usually act as synergetic phenomena. Zinc oxide and gold NPs (ZnO@AuNPs) biosynthesis as a bimetallic was prepared via the eco-friendly manner currently. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was employed for the formulation of ZnO@AuNPs as a nanocomposite via a green method. Physicochemical and topographical characterization was assigned to ZnO@AuNPs and nanocomposite features. The nanostructure of bimetallic NPs and nanocomposite were affirmed with sizes around 15 and 25 nm, respectively. Indeed, the DLS measurements affirmed the more reasonable size and stability of the prepared samples as 27 and 93 nm for bimetallic NPs and nanocomposite, respectively. The inhibitory potential of nanocomposite was more than ZnO@AuNPs against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Enterococcus faecalis, Mucor albicans, Aspergillus flavus, and Mucor circinelloid. ZnO@AuNPs and nanocomposite exhibited antioxidant activity via DPPH with IC50 of 71.38 and 32.4 µg/mL, correspondingly. Excellent anti-diabetic potential of nanocomposite with IC50 of 7.4 µg/mL, and ZnO@AuNPs with IC50 of 9.7 µg/mL was reported compared with the standard acarbose with the IC50 of 50.93 µg/mL for amylase inhibition (%). Photocatalytic degradation of RR195 and RB dyes was performed by ZnO@AuNPs and nanocomposite, where maximum degradation was 85.7 ± 1.53 and 88.7 ± 0.58%, respectively using ZnO@AuNPs, 90.3 ± 0.28 and 91.8 ± 0.27%, respectively using nanocomposite at 100 min.

Te4+ and Er3+ doped ZrO2 nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic, antibacterial activity and dielectric properties: A next generation of multifunctional material

Amid rising water contamination from industrial sources, tackling toxic dyes and pathogens is critical. Photocatalysis offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution to this pressing challenges. Herein, we synthesized Te4+ and Er3+ doped ZrO2 photocatalysts through hydrothermal method and investigated their efficacy in degrading Congo red (CR) and pathogens under visible light. XRD and Raman Spectroscopy confirm monoclinic and tetragonal mixed-phases without any impurities. Doping-induced defects, reduced crystalline diameter, high surface area, modified bandgap (2.95 eV), photoluminescence quenching, coupled with interfacial polarization, contribute to EZO's excellent dielectric response (1.149 × 106), for achieving remarkable photocatalytic activity, verified by photoelectrochemical measurements, LC-MS and phytotoxicity analysis. Under optimal conditions, EZO achieves 99% CR degradation within 100 min (TOC 79.9%), surpassing ZO (77%) and TZO (84%). Catalyst dosages, dye concentrations, and solution pH effect on EZO's photocatalytic performance are systematically assessed. Scavenging experiment emphasized the pivotal role of · OH in CR degradation with 96.4% efficiency after 4 cycles, affirming its remarkable stability. Moreover, EZO demonstrates ROS-mediated antibacterial activity against E. faecalis and E. coli bacteria under visible light, achieving >97% and >94% inhibition rate with an inhibition zone > 3 mm. Hence, the nanoparticle's dual action offers a practical solution for treating contaminated wastewater, ensuring safe irrigation.

Enhancing physical characteristics and antibacterial efficacy of chitosan through investigation of microwave-assisted chemically formulated chitosan-coated ZnO and chitosan/ZnO physical composite

This study investigates the creation and analysis of chitosan-zinc oxide (CS-ZnO) nanocomposites, exploring their effectiveness in inhibiting bacteria. Two synthesis approaches, physical and chemical, were utilized. The CS-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, especially against Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium. Chemically synthesized nanocomposites (CZ10 and CZ100) exhibited larger inhibition zones (16.4 mm and 18.7 mm) compared to physically prepared CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (12.2 mm and 13.8 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, CZ nanocomposites displayed enhanced thermal stability, with decomposition temperatures of 281°C and 290°C, surpassing CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (260°C and 258°C). The residual mass percentages at 800°C were significantly higher for CZ10 and CZ100 (58% and 61%) than for CS-Z5 and CS-Z20 (36% and 34%). UV-Visible spectroscopy revealed reduced band gaps in the CS-ZnO nanocomposites, indicating improved light absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed uniform dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles within the chitosan matrix. In conclusion, this research underscores the impressive antimicrobial potential of CS-ZnO nanocomposites, especially against Gram-positive bacteria, and highlights their enhanced thermal stability. These findings hold promise for diverse applications in industries such as medicine, pharmaceuticals, and materials science, contributing to the development of sustainable materials with robust antimicrobial properties.

Broad-spectrum nano-bactericide utilizing antimicrobial peptides and bimetallic Cu-Ag nanoparticles anchored onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes for sustained protection against persistent bacterial pathogens in crops

Worldwide crop yields are threatened by persistent pathogenic bacteria that cause significant damage and jeopardize global food security. Chemical pesticides have shown limited effectiveness in protecting crops from severe yield loss. To address this obstacle, there is a growing need to develop environmentally friendly bactericides with broad-spectrum and sustained protection against persistent crop pathogens. Here, we present a method for preparing a nanocomposite that combines antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and bimetallic Cu-Ag nanoparticles anchored onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The nanocomposite exhibited dual antibacterial activity by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and splicing nucleic acids. By functionalizing MWCNTs with small AMPs (sAMPs), we achieved enhanced stability and penetration of the nanocomposite, and improved loading capacity of the Cu-Ag nanoparticles. The synthesized MWCNTs&CuNCs@AgNPs@P nanocomposites demonstrated broad-spectrum lethality against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Glasshouse pot trials confirmed the efficacy of the nanocomposites in protecting rice crops against bacterial leaf blight and tomato crops against bacterial wilt. These findings highlight the excellent antibacterial properties of the MWCNTs&CuNCs@AgNPs@P nanocomposite and its potential to replace chemical pesticides, offering significant advantages for agricultural applications.

Industrial-scale feasibility for textile wastewater treatment via Photocatalysis-adsorption technology using black sand and UV lamp

Dye-contaminated wastewater is a major environmental problem that requires effective and affordable treatment methods. This study investigates an innovative approach using black sand filtration assisted by UV light to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. The motivation is to develop a sustainable low-cost wastewater treatment technology. Black sand's composition of iron oxide and other metal oxides enables the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The effects of operating parameters, including pH, bed height, flow rate, and initial MB concentration, were examined using a fixed-bed column system. The maximum adsorption capacity was 562.43 mg g-1 at optimal pH 10, 15 cm bed height, 50 ppm MB, and 53.33 mL min-1 flow rate. Mathematical models effectively described the experimental breakthrough curves. For real textile wastewater, black sand with a UV lamp removed 50.40% COD, 73.68% TDS, 43.82% TSS, and 98.57% conductivity, significantly outperforming filtration without UV assistance. Characterization via XRD, XRF, FTIR, zeta potential, and SEM revealed black sand's photocatalytic properties and mechanism of MB adsorption. The findings demonstrate black sand filtration plus UV irradiation as a feasible, sustainable technology for removing dyes and organics from wastewater. This method has promise for the scale-up treatment of textiles and other industrial effluents.

Biological Renewable Cellulose-Templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O Nanocomposite Photocatalysts for the Degradation of Methylene Blue

Herein, Cellulose-templated Zn1-XCuXO/Ag2O nanocomposites were prepared using biological renewable cellulose extracted from water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). Cellulose-templated Cu-doped ZnO catalysts with different amounts of Cu as the dopants (1, 2, 3, and 4%) were prepared and denoted CZ-1, CZ-2, CZ-3, and CZ-4, respectively, for simplicity. The prepared catalysts were tested for the degradation of methylene blue (MB), and 2% Cu-doped ZnO (CZ-2) showed the best catalytic performance (82%), while the pure ZnO, CZ-1, CZ-3, and CZ-4 catalysts exhibited MB dye degradation efficiencies of 54, 63, 65, and 60%, respectively. The best catalyst (CZ-2) was chosen to further improve the degradation efficiency. Different amounts of AgNO3 (10, 15, 30, and 45 mg) were used for the deposition of Ag2O on the surface of CZ-2 and denoted CZA-10, CZA-15, CZA-30, and CZA-45, respectively. Among the composite catalysts, CZA-15 showed remarkable degradation efficiency and degraded 94% of MB, while the CZA-10, CZA-30, and CZA-45 catalysts showed 90, 81, and 79% degradation efficiencies, respectively, under visible light within 100 min of irradiation. The enhanced catalytic performance could be due to the smaller particle size, the higher electron and hole separation and charge transfer efficiencies, and the lower agglomeration in the composite catalyst system. The results also demonstrated that the Cu-doped ZnO prepared with cellulose as a template, followed by the optimum amount of Ag2O deposition, could have promising applications in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Type I photodynamic antimicrobial therapy: Principles, progress, and future perspectives

The emergence of drug-resistant bacteria has significantly diminished the efficacy of existing antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. Consequently, the need for finding a strategy capable of effectively combating bacterial infections has become increasingly urgent. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered one of the most promising emerging antibacterial strategies due to its non-invasiveness, low adverse effect, and the fact that it does not lead to the development of drug resistance. However, bacteria at the infection sites often exist in the form of biofilm instead of the planktonic form, resulting in a hypoxic microenvironment. This phenomenon compromises the treatment outcome of oxygen-dependent type-II PDT. Compared to type-II PDT, type-I PDT is not constrained by the oxygen concentration in the infected tissues. Therefore, in the treatment of bacterial infections, type-I PDT exhibits significant advantages over type-II PDT. In this review, we first introduce the fundamental principles of type-I PDT in details, including its physicochemical properties and how it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). Next, we explore several specific antimicrobial mechanisms utilized by type-I PDT and summarize the recent applications of type-I PDT in antimicrobial treatment. Finally, the limitations and future development directions of type-I photosensitizers are discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have accelerated the development of bacterial resistance. To achieve the effective eradication of resistant bacteria, pathfinders have devised various treatment strategies. Among these strategies, type I photodynamic therapy has garnered considerable attention owing to its non-oxygen dependence. The utilization of non-oxygen-dependent photodynamic therapy not only enables the effective elimination of drug-resistant bacteria but also facilitates the successful eradication of hypoxic biofilms, which exhibits promising prospects for treating biofilm-associated infections. Based on the current research status, we anticipate that the novel type I photodynamic therapy agent can surmount the biofilm barrier, enabling efficient treatment of hypoxic biofilm infections.

A review on versatile applications of biomaterial/polycationic chitosan: An insight into the structure-property relationship

Chitosan is a versatile and generous biopolymer obtained by alkaline deacetylation of naturally occurring chitin, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose. The excellent physicochemical properties of polycationic chitosan are attributed to the presence of varied functional groups such as amino, hydroxyl, and acetamido groups enabling researchers to tailor the structure and properties of chitosan by different methods such as crosslinking, grafting, copolymerization, composites, and molecular imprinting techniques. The prepared derivatives have diverse applications in the food industry, water treatment, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, and biomedical applications. In this review, numerous applications of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields have been discussed in detail with an insight into their structure-property relationship. This review article concludes and explains the chitosan's biocompatibility and efficiency that has been done so far with future usage and applications as well. Moreover, the possible mechanism of chitosan's activity towards several emerging fields such as energy storage, biodegradable packaging, photocatalysis, biorefinery, and environmental bioremediation are also discussed. Overall, this comprehensive review discusses the science and complete information behind chitosan's wonder function to improve our understanding which is much needful as well as will pave the way towards a sustainable future.

An efficient multi-functional ternary reusable nanocomposite based on chitosan@TiO2@Ag NP immobilized on cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for wastewater treatment

To effectively remove heavy metals, organic contaminants, and pathogenic bacteria from wastewater, an efficient multi-functional ternary nanocomposite based on chitosan (CS), titanium dioxide (TiO2 NP), and silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) was prepared. Different tools were used to confirm the successful synthesis of the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite. Then, the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NPnanocomposite was immobilized on the cellulosic fiber as a support substrate for its easy removal and reuse. On a lab scale, CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was used to remove Cu (II) ions, methyl orange (MO), and methylene blue (MB), as well as inhibit microbes. The results demonstrate that the greatest removal of Cu (II) ions was 95 % at a concentration of 50 mg/L, pH 5, a temperature of 25 °C, an agitation speed of 200 rpm with 1 g adsorbent dose, and a contact time of 150 min. The pseudo-second-order model explained the batch adsorption kinetics well, while the Langmuir model explained the adsorption isotherm well with an adsorption capacity of 7.71 mg/g. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters revealed that adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic, increased randomness, and non-specific chemisorption approach. The photodegradation of MO and MB by CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber was investigated. The results reveal that at pH 3, the MO dye showed the highest photodegradation percentage (90 %), while the MB dye displayed the highest photodegradation percentage (94 %) at pH 11, after an irradiation time of 120 min under visible light. The rate constants for MO and MB were 0.01218 and 0.01412 min-1, respectively. The results antimicrobial activities showed that the CS/TiO2 NP/Ag NP nanocomposite@cellulosic fiber showed excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus (95 ± 2 %) and E. coli (93 ± 3 %) as well as good antifungal activity against C. albicans (77 ± 2 %).

Photocatalytic degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics using chitosan biopolymer functionalized copper oxide nanoparticles prepared by facile sonochemical method

Photocatalytic degradation is an excellent method for removing pharmaceutical residues due to their simplicity, ecological benignity, high efficiency, and exceptional stability. Herein, we demonstrate the sonochemically synthesised chitosan biopolymer functionalized copper oxide nanoparticles as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics. The X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement revealed the formation of single-phase copper oxide (CuO) with a monoclinic structure. The presence of biopolymer functionalization was corroborated by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy by observing the -NH2 and -OH functional groups. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopic images inferred that Chitosan functionalized copper oxide (C-CuO) particles are nano-sized with a smooth texture and aggregation-free particles. The strong absorbance and the broad photoluminescence emission in the ultraviolet-visible region confirm the suitability of CuO and C-CuO nanoparticles for photocatalytic applications. The catalytic activity was studied against fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin under direct sunlight illumination. Interestingly, the C-CuO catalyst demonstrated 71.07 % (@140 min.) and 71.9 % (@60 min.) of degradation for ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, respectively. The obtained photocatalytic activity of the prepared CuO and C-CuO catalysts was superior to the CuO particles prepared by the coprecipitation method (CC-CuO).

A novel Nb2C MXene based aptasensor for rapid and sensitive multi-mode detection of AFB1

Rapid and accurate on-site detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is of great significance for ensuring food safety. This work developed a dual mode aptasensor and a dual channel artificial neural network (ANN) intelligent sensor detection platform for simple and convenient quantitative detection of AFB1 in food. This sensor was prepared by encoding manganese ion (Mn2+) mediated surface concave niobium carbide MXene nanomaterials (Nb2C-MNs) using fluorescent group labeled aptamers (ssDNA-FAM). Mn2+-mediated Nb2C-MNs exhibited better peroxidase-like and fluorescence quenching properties. Moreover, ssDNA-FAM as a fluorescent probe for the sensor also significantly enhanced the enzyme activity of Nb2C-MNs. When AFB1 existed, ssDNA-FAM preferentially bonded to AFB1, resulting in fluorescence signal recovery and colorimetric signal weakening. Consequently, the multimodal biosensor could achieve fluorescence/colorimetric detection without the need for material and reagent replacement. In on-site detection, both ratio fluorescence and colorimetric signals could be collected using smartphones and analyzed and modeled on the developed ANN platform, achieving visual intelligent sensing. This multimodal biosensor had a detection line as low as 0.0950 ng/mL under optimal conditions, and also had the advantages of simple operation, fast and sensitive, and high specificity, which can meet the real-time on-site detection needs of AFB1 in remote areas.

Photocatalytic Antimicrobials: Principles, Design Strategies, and Applications

Nowadays, the increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms requires the search for alternative methods that do not cause drug resistance. Phototherapy strategies (PTs) based on the photoresponsive materials have become a new trend in the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms due to their spatiotemporal controllability and negligible side effects. Among those phototherapy strategies, photocatalytic antimicrobial therapy (PCAT) has emerged as an effective and promising antimicrobial strategy in recent years. In the process of photocatalytic treatment, photocatalytic materials are excited by different wavelengths of lights to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) or other toxic species for the killing of various pathogenic microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and algae. Therefore, this review timely summarizes the latest progress in the PCAT field, with emphasis on the development of various photocatalytic antimicrobials (PCAMs), the underlying antimicrobial mechanisms, the design strategies, and the multiple practical antimicrobial applications in local infections therapy, personal protective equipment, water purification, antimicrobial coatings, wound dressings, food safety, antibacterial textiles, and air purification. Meanwhile, we also present the challenges and perspectives of widespread practical implementation of PCAT as antimicrobial therapeutics. We hope that as a result of this review, PCAT will flourish and become an effective weapon against pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic resistance.

Poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)-grafted chitosan hydrogels for effective adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of dyes

As a result of the growth of industrialization and urbanization, the water ecosystem is contaminated by various pollutants, including heavy metal ions and dyes. The use of low-cost and environmentally friendly dye adsorbents has been investigated. A hydrogel was fabricated via graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) onto chitosan. The hydrogel was used as a dye adsorbent and support for a zinc oxide (ZnO) powder photocatalyst. The adsorption capacity of the bare hydrogel was greater towards cationic dyes than anionic dyes. Grafting P(AA-co-AMPS) exhibited a 23-time increase in adsorption capacity towards crystal violet (CV) compared to pristine chitosan. The effect of the AA-AMPS molar ratio on CV adsorption was studied. A hydrogel with an AA-AMPS ratio of 10 : 1 had the highest adsorption capacity towards CV in water, removing 91% of the dye in 12 h. The maximum adsorption capacity was 2023 mg g-1. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm were described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. ZnO particles were in situ synthesized within the 10 : 1 hydrogel to facilitate the recovery of the photocatalyst. The ZnO hydrogel composite could remove 95% and 92% of CV from solutions on the 1st and 2nd cycle, respectively. In addition, the hydrogel composite containing only 8.7 wt% of ZnO particles effectively degraded adsorbed CV under sunlight and could be reused without requiring a chemical regeneration or photocatalyst recovery procedure. This hydrogel composite is an effective dual-functional material for the adsorption and photodegradation of dye pollutants in wastewater.

Improvement of the optical, photocatalytic and antibacterial properties of ZnO semiconductor nanoparticles using different pepper aqueous extracts

Peppers are fruits that grow on plants of the genus Capsicum and are popular for their use in gastronomy as a condiment and for their anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties due to their phytocompounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, or alkaloids. Semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using a green approach employing natural aqueous extracts of several varieties of peppers (jalapeño, morita, and ghost). The obtained NPs were characterized by different techniques, and their photocatalytic and antibacterial activity was studied. The signal at 620 cm-1 in the FTIR spectra belonging to the Zn-O bond, the appearance of the main peaks of a hexagonal wurtzite structure in the XRD pattern, and the characteristic signals in the UV-Vis spectra confirm the correct formation of ZnO NPs. The photocatalytic activity was analyzed against Methylene Blue (MB), Rhodamine B (RB), and Methyl Orange (MO) under UV and sunlight. All syntheses were able to degrade more than 93% of the pollutants under UV light. Antibacterial assays were performed against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. All syntheses exhibited antibacterial activity against all bacteria and maximum growth inhibition against Bacillus subtilis. The prominent results demonstrate that natural aqueous extracts obtained from peppers can be used to synthesize ZnO NPs with photocatalytic and biomedical applications.

A Green Approach to Obtaining Glycerol Carbonate by Urea Glycerolysis Using Carbon-Supported Metal Oxide Catalysts

The results of sustainable and selective synthesis of glycerol carbonate (GC) from urea and glycerol under ambient pressure using carbon-fiber-supported metal oxide catalysts are reported. Carbon fibers (CF) were prepared via a catalytic chemical vapor deposition method (CCVD) using Ni as a catalyst and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a cheap carbon source. Supported metal oxide catalysts were obtained by an incipient wetness impregnation technique using Zn, Ba, Cr, and Mg nitrates. Finally, the samples were pyrolyzed and oxidized in an air flow. The obtained catalysts (10%MexOy/CFox) were tested in the reaction of urea glycerolysis at 140 °C for 6 h under atmospheric pressure, using an equimolar ratio of reagents and an inert gas flow for NH3 removal. Under the applied conditions, all of the prepared catalysts increased the glycerol conversion and glycerol carbonate yield compared to the blank test, and the best catalytic performance was shown by the CFox-supported ZnO and MgO systems. Screening of the reaction conditions was carried out by applying ZnO/CFox as a catalyst and considering the effect of reaction temperature, molar ratio of reagents, and the mode of the inert gas flow through the reactor on the catalytic process. Finally, a maximum yield of GC of about 40%, together with a selectivity to glycerol carbonate of ~100%, was obtained within 6 h of reaction at 140 °C using a glycerol-to-urea molar ratio of 1:1 while flowing Ar through the reaction mixture. Furthermore, a positive heterogeneous catalytic effect of the CFox support on the process was noticed.

Harnessing Bio-Immobilized ZnO/CNT/Chitosan Ternary Composite Fabric for Enhanced Photodegradation of a Commercial Reactive Dye

Growing demand for sustainable wastewater treatment drives interest in advanced photocatalytic materials. Immobilized photocatalysts hold potential for addressing industrial wastewater organic pollutants, offering substantial surface area, agglomeration prevention, and easy removal. In this study, we successfully immobilized ZnO and carbon nanotubes onto a textile substrate through bilateral esterification and explored their effectiveness as a potent photocatalyst for degrading of commercial textile colorant reactive blue 4 (RB-4) colorant. Findings demonstrated significant improvements in photocatalytic performance upon integrating ZnO and CNTs into the fabric, coupled with chitosan immobilization. The immobilization process of ZnO and CNTs onto the substrate was elucidated through a proposed reaction mechanism, while the appearance of carbonyl peaks at 1719.2 cm-1 in the composite fabric further confirmed bilateral esterification. The as-developed immobilized nano-catalyst exhibited remarkable photocatalytic efficiency with an impressive 93.54% color degradation of RB-4. This innovative approach underscores the immense potential of the ternary immobilized (ZnO/fCNT/chitosan) composite fabric for efficient photocatalytic degradation in textile coloration processes. Exploring the early-stage development of immobilized photocatalysts contributes to safer and more eco-friendly practices, addressing pressing environmental challenges effectively.

Hybrid nanostructures exhibiting both photocatalytic and antibacterial activity-a review

The most vital issues of the modern world for a sustainable future are "health" and "the environment." Scientific endeavors to tackle these two major concerns for mankind need serious attention. The photocatalytic activity toward curbing environmental pollution and antibacterial performance toward a healthy society are two directions that have been emphasized for decades. Recently, materials engineering, in their nanodimension, has shown tremendous possibilities to integrate these functionalities within the same materials. In particular, hybrid nanostructures have shown magnificent prospects to combat both crucial challenges. Many researchers are separately engaged in this important field of research but the collective knowledge on this domain which can facilitate them to excel is badly missing. The present article integrates the development of different hybrid nanostructures which exhibit both photocatalytic degradations of environmental pollutants and antibacterial efficiency. Various synthesis techniques of those hybrid nanomaterials have been discussed. Hybrid nanosystems based on several successful materials have been categorically discussed for better insight into the research advancement in this direction. In particular, Ag-based, metal oxides-based, layered carbon material-based, and Mexene- and self-cleaning-based materials have been chosen for detailing their performance as anti-pollutant and antibacterial materials. Those hybrid systems along with some miscellaneous booming nanostructured materials have been discussed comprehensively with their success and limitations toward their bifunctionality as antipollutant and antibacterial agents.

Recent advances in luminescence and aptamer sensors based analytical determination, adsorptive removal, degradation of the tetracycline antibiotics, an overview and outlook

Tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), one of the important antibiotic groups, have been widely used in human and veterinary medicines. Their residues in foodstuff, soil and sewage have caused serious threats to food safety, ecological environment and human health. Here, we reviewed the potential harms of TCs residues to foodstuff, environment and human beings, discussed the luminescence and aptamer sensors based analytical determination, adsorptive removal, and degradation strategies of TCs residues from a recent 5-year period. The advantages and intrinsic limitations of these strategies have been compared and discussed, the potential challenges and opportunities in TCs residues degradation have also been deliberated and explored.

Formation Features of Polymer-Metal-Carbon Ternary Electromagnetic Nanocomposites Based on Polyphenoxazine

Novel ternary hybrid polyphenoxazine (PPOA)-derived nanocomposites involving Co-Fe particles and single-walled (SWCNTs) or multi-walled (MWCNTs) carbon nanotubes were prepared and investigated. An efficient one-pot method employing infrared (IR) heating enabled the formation of Co-Fe/CNT/PPOA nanocomposites. During this, the dehydrogenation of phenoxazine (POA) units led to the simultaneous reduction of metals by released hydrogen, yielding bimetallic Co-Fe particles with a size range from the nanoscale (5-30 nm) to the microscale (400-1400 nm). The synthesized Co-Fe/CNT/PPOA nanomaterials exhibited impressive thermal stability, demonstrating a half-weight loss at 640 °C and 563 °C in air for Co-Fe/SWCNT/PPOA and Co-Fe/MWCNT/PPOA, respectively. Although a slightly broader range of saturation magnetization values was obtained using MWCNTs, it was found that the type of carbon nanotube, whether an SWCNT (22.14-41.82 emu/g) or an MWCNT (20.93-44.33 emu/g), did not considerably affect the magnetic characteristics of the resulting nanomaterial. By contrast, saturation magnetization escalated with an increasing concentration of both cobalt and iron. These nanocomposites demonstrated a weak dependence of electrical conductivity on frequency. It is shown that the conductivity value for hybrid nanocomposites is higher compared to single-polymer materials and becomes higher with increasing CNT content.

A novel multimode biosensor for sensitive detection of AFB1 in food based on Mxenes nano enzymes

In this work, Ti₃C₂ nano-enzymes (Ti₃C₂ NEs) materials with simulated peroxidase activity and fluorescence quenching properties were prepared. Then Ti₃C₂ NEs was functionalized using 6-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) labeled Aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) aptamers to construct a novel multimode nano enzyme biosensor for the detection of AFB₁ in peanuts. Based on the fluorescence quenching characteristics and the superior simulated peroxidase activity of Ti₃C₂ NE_S and the specific binding of the aptamer to AFB₁, the sensitive and rapid fluorescence/colorimetric/smart phone detection of AFB₁ have been achieved, with detection limits of 0.09 ng mL^-1, 0.61 ng mL^-1 and 0.96 ng mL^-1, respectively. The analytical method provided can not only detect AFB₁ in multiple modes, but also has a wider detection range, lower limit of detection (LOD) and better recovery rate, and can achieve on-site accurate detection of AFB₁ content in peanuts, which has great application potential in the field of food quality testing.

Synergism of Co/Na in BiVO4 microstructures for visible-light driven degradation of toxic dyes in water

In this work, we report a synergism of Co/Na in Co@Na-BiVO₄ microstructures to boost the photocatalytic performance of bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) catalysts. A co-precipitation method has been employed to synthesize blossom-like BiVO₄ microstructures with incorporation of Co and Na metals, followed by calcination at 350 °C. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared photocatalysts are characterized by XRD, Raman, FTIR, SEM, EDX, AFM, UV-vis/DRS and PL techniques. Dye degradation activities are evaluated by UV-vis spectroscopy, in which methylene blue, Congo red and rhodamine B dyes are chosen for comparative study. The activities of bare BiVO₄, Co-BiVO₄, Na-BiVO₄, and Co@Na-BiVO₄ are compared. To evaluate the ideal conditions, various factors that affect degradation efficiencies have been investigated. The results of this study show that the Co@Na-BiVO₄ photocatalysts exhibit higher activity than bare BiVO₄, Co-BiVO₄ or Na-BiVO₄. The higher efficiencies were attributed to the synergistic role of Co and Na contents. This synergism assists in better charge separation and more electron transportation to the active sites during the photoreaction.

Paper-based colorimetric detection of COVID-19 using aptasenor based on biomimetic peroxidase like activity of ChF/ZnO/CNT nano-hybrid

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as the infectious disease caused the pandemic disease around the world through infection by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The common diagnosis approach is Quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) which is time consuming and labor intensive. In the present study a novel colorimetric aptasensor was developed based on intrinsic catalytic activity of chitosan film embedded with ZnO/CNT (ChF/ZnO/CNT) on 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate. The main nanocomposite platform was constructed and functionalized with specific COVID-19 aptamer. The construction subjected with TMB substrate and H₂O₂ in the presence of different concentration of COVID-19 virus. Separation of aptamer after binding with virus particles declined the nanozyme activity. Upon addition of virus concentration, the peroxidase like activity of developed platform and colorimetric signals of oxidized TMB decreased gradually. Under optimal conditions the nanozyme could detect the virus in the linear range of 1-500 pg mL and LOD of 0.05 pg mL. Also, a paper-based platform was used for set up the strategy on applicable device. The paper-based strategy showed a linear range between 50 and 500 pg mL with LOD of 8 pg mL. The applied paper based colorimetric strategy showed reliable results for sensitive and selective detection of COVID-19 virus with the cost-effective approach.

Heterostructure charge transfer dynamics on self-assembled ZnO on electronically different single-walled carbon nanotubes

The charge transfer kinetics of the catalyst particles play a key role in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for the complete destruction of recalcitrant and persistent contaminants in water. Here, a significant improvement in the photocatalytic performance is observed in the Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT)-ZnO heterostructure photocatalyst. The charge transfer dynamics and factors affecting AOP are studied using ZnO nanoparticles self-assembled onto three electronically different SWCNTs (metallic, semiconducting, and pristine) via the precipitation method, introducing a heterojunction interface. The creation of the SWCNT/ZnO heterostructure interface improves charge transfer and separation, resulting in a charge carrier lifetime of 7.37 ns. Also, surface area, pore size, and pore volumes are increased by 4.2 times compared to those of ZnO. The nanoparticles-coated face-mask fabric used as the floating photocatalyst exhibited high stability and recyclability with 99% RhB degradation efficiency under natural sunlight and 94% under UV light after the 5th cycle. The surface and crystal defects-oxygen or zinc defects/interstitials open new reaction active sites that assist in charge carrier transfer and act as pollutant absorption and interaction sites for enhanced performance. The ideal band edge positions of the valence band and conduction band favor the generation of H2O/OH•, OH·/OH, and O2/HO2• reactive oxygen species. OH• radicals are found to play a vital role in this AOP by using ethanol as an OH• scavenger.

Composite beads from chitosan and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of reactive red 141

This study describes the fabrication of composite beads comprising chitosan and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a natural biodegradable dye adsorbent and support for ZnO photocatalyst. Chitosan beads were cross-linked with trisodium citrate dihydrate to enhance the adsorption capacity for the reactive red 141 dye (RR141). The ability was further improved by adding ZIF-8. The optimum loading was 2.5%, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 2 h. The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite beads was 6.51 mg g^-1 at pH 4 when an initial concentration of 1000 mg L^-1 was used. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process. The composite beads could also adsorb dyes like reactive black, Congo red, direct yellow, reactive orange, rhodamine B, crystal violet, and methylene blue (MB). Thermal stability was significantly improved after coating the surface of the 2.5% ZIF beads with a ZnO photocatalyst. After UV irradiation for 5 h, the photocatalytic beads containing 2.59 weight percent of ZnO could decolorize 99% of MB and 90% of RR141 dyes with a degradation rate of 0.6032 h^-1 and 0.3198 h^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the photocatalytic beads remained effective for at least ten consecutive cycles.

Photocatalytic activity of green synthesized cadmium sulfide quantum dots on the removal of RhB dye and its cytotoxicity and antibacterial studies

Presence of inorganic pollutants in water reservoirs is the treating factor for human health and environment. Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) has been regarded as one of the most efficient nanoparticles for their enhanced photocatalytic activity. Medicinal plants are the safe sources to provide green template for biosynthesis of inorganic nanoparticles such as quantum dots. In order to determine the photocatalytic and biological application of cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs), a biosynthesis approach was employed using saffron (Crocus sativus L.) stigma extract as the green reaction substrate. The biosynthesis process was evaluated at different pH condition to obtain the most efficient CdS QDs. Characterization of prepared CdS QDs were determined through UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, FTIR and TEM analysis. The obtained results showed well dsispersed and uniform QDs during green synthesis at the optimum condition. The absorption and electrical properties of green synthesized CdS QDs showed the lowest energy bandgap of 2.4 at pH 11. Photocatalytic activity of CdS QDs on Rhodamine B degradation showed 92% degradation after 80 min under UV light irradiation. The antibacterial and cell cytotoxicity of green synthesized CdS QDs were assayed by disk diffusion and MTT assays respectively. Obtained results showed significant antibacterial effect of CdS QDs against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria includingB. subtilis(90%) andE. coli(96%) respectively. Moreover, cytotoxicity of prepared CdS Qds through MTT assay indicated 79% apoptosis induction on MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
