Atomically dispersed antimony on carbon nitride for the artificial photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide

Oxygen-enriched carbon quantum dots from coffee waste: Extremely active organic photocatalyst for sustainable solar-to-H2O2 conversion

Solar-driven artificial photosynthesis offers a promising avenue for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation, an efficient and economical replacement for current methods. The efficiency and selectivity hurdles of the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in solar-to- H2O2 conversion are substantial barriers to large scale production. In this manuscript, a simple biomass-assisted synthesis was performed to produce oxygen-enriched carbon quantum dots (OE-CQDs) from spent coffee waste, acting as an efficient photocatalyst for solar-powered H2O2 production. OE-CQDs can stabilize and store light-generated electrons effectively, boosting charge separation and enhancing photocatalytic performance with longevity. The maximal photocatalytic H2O2 production was achieved viz the utilization of OE-CQDs with generation rate of 356.86 μmol g-1 h-1 by retaining 80% activity without any external sacrificial donors. The outstanding performance of synthesized OE-CQDs under light exposure at wavelength (λ) of 280 nm has been ensured by the quantum yield value of 9.4% upon H2O2 generation. The combinatorial benefits of OE-CQDs with their authentic crystalline structure and oxygen enrichment, is expected to be enhancing the ORR activity through accelerating charge transfer, and optimizing oxygen diffusion. Consequently, our eco-friendly method holds considerable promise for creating highly efficient, metal-free photocatalysts for artificial H2O2 production.

Aggregation-Induced Emission CN-Based Nanoparticles to Alleviate Hypoxic Liver Fibrosis via Triggering HSC Ferroptosis and Enhancing Photodynamic Therapy

Hypoxia can lead to liver fibrosis and severely limits the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, carbon nitride (CN)-based hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) VPSGCNs@TSI for light-driven water splitting were utilized to solve this problem. CNs were doped with selenide glucose (Se-glu) to enhance their red/NIR region absorption. Then, vitamin A-poly(ethylene glycol) (VA-PEG) fragments and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizers TSI were introduced into Se-glu-doped CN NPs (VPSGCNs) to construct VPSGCNs@TSI NPs. The introduction of VA-PEG fragments enhanced the targeting of the NPs to activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and reduced their toxicity to ordinary liver cells. VPSGCN units could trigger water splitting to generate O2 under 660 nm laser irradiation, improve the hypoxic environment of the fibrosis site, downregulate HIF-1α expression, and activate HSC ferroptosis via the HIF-1α/SLC7A11 pathway. In addition, generated O2 could also increase the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production of TSI units in a hypoxic environment, thereby completely reversing hypoxia-triggered PDT resistance to enhance the PDT effect. The combination of water-splitting materials and photodynamic materials showed a 1 + 1 > 2 effect in increasing oxygen levels in liver fibrosis, promoting ferroptosis of activated HSCs and reversing PDT resistance caused by hypoxia.

Accumulation of Long-Lived Photogenerated Holes at Indium Single-Atom Catalysts via Two Coordinate Nitrogen Vacancy Defect Engineering for Enhanced Photocatalytic Oxidation

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidation by photogenerated holes has immense potential for environmental remediation applications. While the electron-mediated photoreduction reactions are often at the spotlight, active holes possess a remarkable oxidation capacity that can degrade recalcitrant organic pollutants, resulting in nontoxic byproducts. However, the random charge transfer and rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs hinder the accumulation of long-lived holes at the reaction center. Herein, a novel method employing defect-engineered indium (In) single-atom photocatalysts with nitrogen vacancy (Nv) defects, dispersed in carbon nitride foam (In-Nv-CNF), is reported to overcome these challenges and make further advances in photocatalysis. This Nv defect-engineered strategy produces a remarkable extension in the lifetime and an increase in the concentration of photogenerated holes in In-Nv-CNF. Consequently, the optimized In-Nv-CNF demonstrates a remarkable 50-fold increase in photo-oxidative degradation rate compared to pristine CN, effectively breaking down two widely used antibiotics (tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) under visible light. The contaminated water treated by In-Nv-CNF is completely nontoxic based on the growth of Escherichia coli. Structural-performance correlations between defect engineering and long-lived hole accumulation in In-Nv-CNF are established and validated through experimental and theoretical agreement. This work has the potential to elevate the efficiency of overall photocatalytic reactions from a hole-centric standpoint.

In situ single iron atom doping on Bi2WO6 monolayers triggers efficient photo-fenton reaction

Developing an efficient photocatalytic system for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) activation in Fenton-like processes holds significant promise for advancing water purification technologies. However, challenges such as high carrier recombination rates, limited active sites, and suboptimal H2O2 activation efficiency impede optimal performance. Here we show that single-iron-atom dispersed Bi2WO6 monolayers (SIAD-BWOM), designed through a facile hydrothermal approach, can offer abundant active sites for H2O2 activation. The SIAD-BWOM catalyst demonstrates superior photo-Fenton degradation capabilities, particularly for the persistent pesticide dinotefuran (DNF), showcasing its potential in addressing recalcitrant organic pollutants. We reveal that the incorporation of iron atoms in place of tungsten within the electron-rich [WO4]2- layers significantly facilitates electron transfer processes and boosts the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle efficiency. Complementary experimental investigations and theoretical analyses further elucidate how the atomically dispersed iron induces lattice strain in the Bi2WO6 monolayer, thereby modulating the d-band center of iron to improve H2O2 adsorption and activation. Our research provides a practical framework for developing advanced photo-Fenton catalysts, which can be used to treat emerging and refractory organic pollutants more effectively.

Sulfur-Tuned Main-Group Sb-N-C Catalysts for Selective 2-Electron and 4-Electron Oxygen Reduction

The selective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is important for various energy conversion processes such as the fuel cells and metal-air batteries for the 4e- pathway and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis for the 2e- pathway. However, it remains a challenge to tune the ORR selectivity of a catalyst in a controllable manner. Herein, an efficient strategy for introducing sulfur dopants to regulate the ORR selectivity of main-group Sb-N-C single-atom catalysts  is reported. Significantly, Sb-N-C with the highest sulfur content follows a 2e- pathway with high H2O2 selectivity (96.8%) and remarkable mass activity (96.1 A g-1 at 0.65 V), while the sister catalyst with the lowest sulfur content directs a 4e- pathway with a half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.89 V) that is more positive than commercial Pt/C. In addition, practical applications for these two 2e-/4e- ORR catalysts are demonstrated by bulk H2O2 electrosynthesis for the degradation of organic pollutants and a high-power zinc-air battery, respectively. Combined experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the excellent selectivity for the sulfurized Sb-N-Cs is attributed to the optimal adsorption-desorption of the ORR intermediates realized through the electronic structure modulation by the sulfur dopants.

N-Decorated Main-Group MgAl2O4 Spinel: Unlocking Exceptional Oxygen Reduction Activity for Zn-Air Batteries

The development of economical and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial to accelerate the widespread application rhythm of aqueous rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Here, a strategy is reported that the modification of the binding energy for reaction intermediates by the axial N-group converts the inactive spinel MgAl2O4 into the active motif of MgAl2O4-N. It is found that the introduction of N species can effectively optimize the electronic configuration of MgAl2O4, thereby significantly reducing the adsorption strength of *OH and boosting the reaction process. This main-group MgAl2O4-N catalyst exhibits a high ORR activity in a broad pH range from acidic and alkaline environments. The aqueous ZABs assembled with MgAl2O4-N shows a peak power density of 158.5 mW cm-2, the long-term cyclability over 2000 h and the high stability in the temperature range from -10 to 50 °C, outperforming the commercial Pt/C in terms of activity and stability. This work not only serves as a significant candidate for the robust ORR electrocatalysts of aqueous ZABs, but also paves a new route for the effective reutilization of waste Mg alloys.

Achieving a solar-to-chemical efficiency of 3.6% in ambient conditions by inhibiting interlayer charges transport

Efficiently converting solar energy into chemical energy remains a formidable challenge in artificial photosynthetic systems. To date, rarely has an artificial photosynthetic system operating in the open air surpassed the highest solar-to-biomass conversion efficiency (1%) observed in plants. In this study, we present a three-dimension polymeric photocatalyst achieving a solar-to-H2O2 conversion efficiency of 3.6% under ambient conditions, including real water, open air, and room temperature. The impressive performance is attributed to the efficient storage of electrons inside materials via expeditious intramolecular charge transfer, and the fast extraction of the stored electrons by O2 that can diffuse into the internal pores of the self-supporting three-dimensional material. This construction strategy suppresses the interlayer transfer of excitons, polarizers and carriers, effectively increases the utilization of internal excitons to 82%. This breakthrough provides a perspective to substantially enhance photocatalytic performance and bear substantial implications for sustainable energy generation and environmental remediation.

Atomically dispersed low-valent Au boosts photocatalytic hydroxyl radical production

Providing affordable, safe drinking water and universal sanitation poses a grand societal challenge. Here we developed atomically dispersed Au on potassium-incorporated polymeric carbon nitride material that could simultaneously boost photocatalytic generation of ·OH and H2O2 with an apparent quantum efficiency over 85% at 420 nm. Potassium introduction into the poly(heptazine imide) matrix formed strong K-N bonds and rendered Au with an oxidation number close to 0. Extensive experimental characterization and computational simulations revealed that the low-valent Au altered the materials' band structure to trap highly localized holes produced under photoexcitation. These highly localized holes could boost the 1e- water oxidation reaction to form highly oxidative ·OH and simultaneously dissociate the hydrogen atom in H2O, which greatly promoted the reduction of oxygen to H2O2. The photogenerated ·OH led to an efficiency enhancement for visible-light-response superhydrophilicity. Furthermore, photo-illumination in an onsite fixed-bed reactor could disinfect water at a rate of 66 L H2O m-2 per day.

A photocatalytic redox cycle over a polyimide catalyst drives efficient solar-to-H2O2 conversion

Circumventing the conventional two-electron oxygen reduction pathway remains a great problem in enhancing the efficiency of H2O2 photosynthesis. A promising approach to achieve outstanding photocatalytic activity involves the utilization of redox intermediates. Here, we engineer a polyimide aerogel photocatalyst with photoreductive carbonyl groups for non-sacrificial H2O2 production. Under photoexcitation, carbonyl groups on the photocatalyst surface are reduced, forming an anion radical intermediate. The produced intermediate is oxidized by O2 to produce H2O2 and subsequently restores the carbonyl group. The high catalytic efficiency is ascribed to a photocatalytic redox cycle mediated by the radical anion, which not only promotes oxygen adsorption but also lowers the energy barrier of O2 reduction reaction for H2O2 generation. An apparent quantum yield of 14.28% at 420 ± 10 nm with a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.92% is achieved. Moreover, we demonstrate that a mere 0.5 m2 self-supported polyimide aerogel exposed to natural sunlight for 6 h yields significant H2O2 production of 34.3 mmol m-2.

An in-depth study of integrating cascaded photocatalytic H2O2 generation and activation with solar-driven interfacial evaporation for in-situ organic contaminant remediation

Integrating cascaded photocatalytic H2O2 generation and subsequent activation of H2O2 (into ·OH radicals) with solar-driven interfacial evaporation techniques offers an effective and sustainable approach for in-situ treating water contaminated with organic substances. Unlike traditional water-dispersed catalysts, the interfacial evaporation approach presents unique challenges in photocatalytic reactions. We explored these dynamics using an AgI/PPy/MF interfacial photothermal set, achieving H2O2 production efficiency (approximately 1.53 mM/g/h) - three times higher than submerged counterparts. This efficiency is attributed to exceptional solar light absorption (about 95 %), a significant surface photothermal effect (raising temperatures by approximately 36 °C), and enhanced oxygen availability (38 times more than in water), all characteristic of the interfacial system. The in-situ activation of H2O2 into ·OH notably improves the degradation of organic pollutants, achieving up to 99 % removal efficiency. This comprehensive analysis highlights the potential of combining photocatalytic H2O2 processes with interfacial evaporation for efficiently purifying organically polluted water.

The Rise of Xene Hybrids

Xenes, mono-elemental atomic sheets, exhibit Dirac/Dirac-like quantum behavior. When interfaced with other 2D materials such as boron nitride, transition metal dichalcogenides, and metal carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides, it enables them with unique physicochemical properties, including structural stability, desirable bandgap, efficient charge carrier injection, flexibility/breaking stress, thermal conductivity, chemical reactivity, catalytic efficiency, molecular adsorption, and wettability. For example, BN acts as an anti-oxidative shield, MoS2 injects electrons upon laser excitation, and MXene provides mechanical flexibility. Beyond precise compositional modulations, stacking sequences, and inter-layer coupling controlled by parameters, achieving scalability and reproducibility in hybridization is crucial for implementing these quantum materials in consumer applications. However, realizing the full potential of these hybrid materials faces challenges such as air gaps, uneven interfaces, and the formation of defects and functional groups. Advanced synthesis techniques, a deep understanding of quantum behaviors, precise control over interfacial interactions, and awareness of cross-correlations among these factors are essential. Xene-based hybrids show immense promise for groundbreaking applications in quantum computing, flexible electronics, energy storage, and catalysis. In this timely perspective, recent discoveries of novel Xenes and their hybrids are highlighted, emphasizing correlations among synthetic parameters, structure, properties, and applications. It is anticipated that these insights will revolutionize diverse industries and technologies.

Simultaneously Utilizing Excited Holes and Electrons for Piezoelectric-Enhanced Photoproduction of H2O2 from S-Scheme 2D S-Doped VOx/g-C3N4 Nanostructures

2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) piezo-photocatalysts for the production of fine chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), have attracted significant attention of global scientists owing to the efficiency in utilizing surface piezoelectric effects from 2D materials to overcome rapid charge recombination in photocatalytic processes. In this research, we reported the fabrication of 2D S-doped VOx deposited on 2D g-C3N4 to produce H2O2 via the piezo-photocatalytic process with high production yields at 20.19 mmol g-1 h-1, which was 1.75 and 4.87 times higher than that from solely piezo-catalytic and photocatalytic H2O2 generation. The finding pointed out that adding sulfur (S) to VOx can help to improve the catalytic outcomes by modifying the electronic properties of pristine VOx. In addition, when coupled with g-C3N4, the presence of S limits the formation of graphene in the VOx/g-C3N4 composites, causing shielding effects and pushing the cascade reactions toward water generation in the materials. Besides, the research also sheds light on the charge transport between g-C3N4 and S-VOx under irradiation and how the composites work to trigger the formation of H2O2. The presence of S in the composite systems enhances charge transfer between two semiconductors by strengthening the internal electric fields (IEF) to drive electrons moving in one direction, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the formation of H2O2 significantly relies on the reduction of oxygen to generate oxygenic radical species at the g-C3N4 sites. Meanwhile, S-VOx provides oxidative sites in the composites to oxidize water molecules to directly or indirectly generate H2O2 or O2, which will further participate in the reactions to produce the final products. This study confirms the validation of S-scheme piezo-photocatalysts, thus encouraging further research on developing heterojunction materials with high catalytic efficiency, which can be used in practical conditions.

Heterogeneous organophotocatalytic HBr oxidation coupled with oxygen reduction for boosting bromination of arenes

Developing mild photocatalytic bromination strategies using sustainable bromo source has been attracting intense interests, but there is still much room for improvement. Full utilization of redox centers of photocatalysts for efficient generation of Br+ species is the key. Herein we report heterogenous organophotocatalytic HBr oxidation coupled with oxygen reduction to furnish Br2 and H2O2 for effective bromination of arenes over Al2O3 supported perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). Mechanism studies suggest that O-vacancy in Al2O3 can provide Lewis-acid-type anchoring sites for O2, enabling unexpected dual-electron transfer from anchored photoexcited PTCDA to chemically bound O2 to produce H2O2. The in-situ generated H2O2 and Br2 over redox centers work together to generate HBrO for bromination of arenes. This work provides new insights that heterogenization of organophotocatalysts can not only help to improve their stability and recyclability, but also endow them with the ability to trigger unusual reaction mode via cooperative catalysis with supports.

Circumventing bottlenecks in H2O2 photosynthesis over carbon nitride with iodine redox chemistry and electric field effects

Artificial photosynthesis using carbon nitride (g-C3N4) holds a great promise for sustainable and cost-effective H2O2 production, but the high carrier recombination rate impedes its efficiency. To tackle this challenge, we propose an innovative method involving multispecies iodine mediators (I-/I3-) intercalation through a pre-photo-oxidation process using potassium iodide (suspected deteriorated "KI") within the g-C3N4 framework. Moreover, we introduce an external electric field by incorporating cationic methyl viologen ions to establish an auxiliary electron transfer channel. Such a unique design drastically improves the separation of photo-generated carriers, achieving an impressive H2O2 production rate of 46.40 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation, surpassing the most visible-light H2O2-producing systems. Combining various advanced characterization techniques elucidates the inner photocatalytic mechanism, and the application potential of this photocatalytic system is validated with various simulation scenarios. This work presents a significative strategy for preparing and applying highly efficient g-C3N4-based catalysts in photochemical H2O2 production.

Pyridine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with Pyridyl-Imine Structures for Boosting Photocatalytic H2O2 Production via One-Step 2e- Oxygen Reduction

Bipyridine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising contenders for the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, the presence of imine nitrogen alters the mode of H2O2 generation from an efficient one-step two-electron (2e-) route to a two-step 2e- oxygen reduction pathway. In this work, we introduce 3,3'-bipyridine units into imine-based COF skeletons, creating a pyridyl-imine structure with two adjacent nitrogen atoms between the pyridine ring and imine linkage. This unique bipyridine-like architecture can effectively suppress the two-step 2e- ORR process at the single imine-nitrogen site, facilitating a more efficient one-step 2e- pathway. Consequently, the optimized pyridyl-imine COF (PyIm-COF) exhibits a remarkable H2O2 production rate of up to 5850 μmol h-1 g-1, nearly double that of pristine bipyridine COFs. This work provides valuable insight into the rational design of functionalized COFs for enhanced H2O2 production in photocatalysis.

A Solar to Chemical Strategy: Green Hydrogen as a Means, Not an End

Green hydrogen is the key to the chemical industry achieving net zero emissions. The chemical industry is responsible for almost 2% of all CO2 emissions, with half of it coming from the production of simple commodity chemicals, such as NH3, H2O2, methanol, and aniline. Despite electrolysis driven by renewable power sources emerging as the most promising way to supply all the green hydrogen required in the production chain of these chemicals, in this review, it is worth noting that the photocatalytic route may be underestimated and can hold a bright future for this topic. In fact, the production of H2 by photocatalysis still faces important challenges in terms of activity, engineering, and economic feasibility. However, photocatalytic systems can be tailored to directly convert sunlight and water (or other renewable proton sources) directly into chemicals, enabling a solar-to-chemical strategy. Here, a series of recent examples are presented, demonstrating that photocatalysis can be successfully employed to produce the most important commodity chemicals, especially on NH3, H2O2, and chemicals produced by reduction reactions. The replacement of fossil-derived H2 in the synthesis of these chemicals can be disruptive, essentially safeguarding the transition of the chemical industry to a low-carbon economy.

Anthraquinone-Induced asymmetric antimony coordination center for selective O2 photoreduction to H2O2

Achieving O2 photoreduction to H2O2 with high selectivity control and durability while using easily accessible catalyst requires new synthesis strategies. Herein, we propose an asymmteric Sb coordination active center strategy of introducing anthraquinone (AQ) and heptazine to form local N3 - Sb - O coordination by a rapid and simple explosive crystallization approach, resulting in a mesoporous conjugated heptazine-amide-AQ polymer coordinated Sb (HAAQ-Sb). It is demonstrated that the N3 - Sb - O coordination effectively suppresses the charge recombination and acts as the highly active site for O2 adsorption. Moreover, as-introduced AQ units initiate low-barrier hydrogen transfer through a reversible redox process that triggers highly-efficient H2O2 production. A superior apparent quantum yield of 20.2 % at 400 nm and a remarkable solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.71 % are achieved on the optimal HAAQ-Sb, which is the highest among C3N4-based photocatalysts at present. This asymmetric coordination concept and material design method provide new perspectives for the research of novel catalysts toward artificial photosynthesis.

Efficient Proton Transfer and Charge Separation within Covalent Organic Frameworks via Hydrogen-Bonding Network to Boost H2O2 Photosynthesis

Photocatalytic synthesis based on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has shown great promise for H2O2 production. However, the low activity and selectivity of 2e- ORR result in a fairly low efficiency of H2O2 production. Herein, we propose a strategy to enhance the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process in covalent organic frameworks (COFs), thereby significantly boosting H2O2 photosynthesis. We demonstrated that the construction of a hydrogen-bonding network, achieved by anchoring the H3PO4 molecular network on COF nanochannels, can greatly improve both proton conductivity and photogenerated charge separation efficiency of COFs. Thus, COF@H3PO4 exhibited superior photocatalytic performance in generating H2O2 without sacrificial agents, with a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency as high as 0.69%. Results indicated that a much more localized spatial distribution of energy band charge density on COF@H3PO4 led to efficient charge separation, and the small energy barrier of the rate-limiting step from *OOH to H2O2 endowed COF@H3PO4 with higher 2e- ORR selectivity.

Schottky Junction Enhanced Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide by Ultrathin Porous Carbon Nitride Supported Ni Nanoparticles

Artificial photosynthesis for high-value hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through a two-electron reduction reaction is a green and sustainable strategy. However, the development of highly active H2O2 photocatalysts is impeded by severe carrier recombination, ineffective active sites, and low surface reaction efficiency. We developed a dual optimization strategy to load dense Ni nanoparticles onto ultrathin porous graphitic carbon nitride (Ni-UPGCN). In the absence and presence of sacrificial agents, Ni-UPGCN achieved H2O2 production rates of 169 and 4116 μmol g-1 h-1 with AQY (apparent quantum efficiency) at 420 nm of 3.14% and 17.71%. Forming a Schottky junction, the surface-modified Ni nanoparticles broaden the light absorption boundary and facilitate charge separation, which act as active sites, promoting O2 adsorption and reducing the formation energy of *OOH (reaction intermediate). This results in a substantial improvement in both H2O2 generation activity and selectivity. The Schottky junction of dual modulation strategy provides novel insights into the advancement of highly effective photocatalytic agents for the photosynthesis of H2O2.

Roles of Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups in Carbon for Electrocatalytic Two-Electron Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Recent years have witnessed great research interests in developing high-performance electrocatalysts for the two-electron (2e-) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) that enables the sustainable and flexible synthesis of H2O2. Carbon-based electrocatalysts exhibit attractive catalytic performance for the 2e- ORR, where oxygen-containing functional groups (OFGs) play a decisive role. However, current understanding is far from adequate, and the contribution of OFGs to the catalytic performance remains controversial. Therefore, a critical overview on OFGs in carbon-based electrocatalysts toward the 2e- ORR is highly desirable. Herein, we go over the methods for constructing OFGs in carbon including chemical oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, and precursor inheritance. Then we review the roles of OFGs in activating carbon toward the 2e- ORR, focusing on the intrinsic activity of different OFGs and the interplay between OFGs and metal species or defects. At last, we discuss the reasons for inconsistencies among different studies, and personal perspectives on the future development in this field are provided. The results provide insights into the origin of high catalytic activity and selectivity of carbon-based electrocatalysts toward the 2e- ORR and would provide theoretical foundations for the future development in this field.

Unveiling the Role of Water in Heterogeneous Photocatalysis of Methanol Conversion for Efficient Hydrogen Production

Water molecules, which act as both solvent and reactant, play critical roles in photocatalytic reactions for methanol conversion. However, the influence of water on the adsorption of methanol and desorption of liquid products, which are two essential steps that control the performance in photocatalysis, has been well under-explored. Herein, we reveal the role of water in heterogeneous photocatalytic processes of methanol conversion on the platinized carbon nitride (Pt/C3N4) model photocatalyst. In situ spectroscopy techniques, isotope effects, and computational calculations demonstrate that water shows adverse effects on the adsorption of methanol molecules and desorption processes of methanol oxidation products on the surface of Pt/C3N4, significantly altering the reaction pathways in photocatalytic methanol conversion process. Guided by these discoveries, a photothermal-assisted photocatalytic system is designed to achieve a high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 2.3 %, which is among the highest values reported. This work highlights the important roles of solvents in controlling the adsorption/desorption behaviours of liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis.

Vinyl-Group-Anchored Covalent Organic Framework for Promoting the Photocatalytic Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide

The artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 from water and oxygen using semiconductor photocatalysts is attracting increasing levels of attention owing to its green, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving characteristics. Although covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for promoting photocatalytic H2O2 production owing to their structural and functional diversity, they typically suffer from low charge-generation and -transfer efficiencies as well as rapid charge recombination, which restricts their use as catalysts for photocatalytic H2O2 production. Herein, we report a strategy for anchoring vinyl moieties to a COF skeleton to facilitate charge separation and migration, thereby promoting photocatalytic H2O2 generation. This vinyl-group-bearing COF photocatalyst exhibits a H2O2-production rate of 84.5 μmol h-1 (per 10 mg), which is ten-times higher than that of the analog devoid of vinyl functionality and superior to most reported COF photocatalysts. Both experimental and theoretical studies provide deep insight into the origin of the improved photocatalytic performance. These findings are expected to facilitate the rational design and modification of organic semiconductors for use in photocatalytic applications.

Recent developments in photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an environmentally friendly strong oxidant and energy carrier, has attracted widespread attention in photocatalysis. Artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 using water and oxygen as raw materials, solar energy as an energy source, and semiconductor materials as catalysts is considered a promising technology. In the past few decades, encouraging progress has been made in the photocatalytic production of H2O2. Therefore, we summarize the research achievements in this field in recent years. This review first briefly introduces the reaction pathway, detection techniques and evaluation metrics. Then, the recent advances in photocatalysts are highlighted. Furthermore, the existing challenges and possible solutions in this field are presented. At last, we look forward to the future development direction of this field. This review provides valuable insights and guidance for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production.

Hydroxyl-Bonded Co Single Atom Site on Boroncarbonitride Surface Realizes Nonsacrificial H2O2 Synthesis in the Near-Infrared Region

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from O2 and H2O under near-infrared light is a sustainable renewable energy production strategy, but challenging reaction. The bottleneck of this reaction lies in the regulation of O2 reduction path by photocatalyst. Herein, the center of the one-step two-electron reduction (OSR) pathway of O2 for H2O2 evolution via the formation of the hydroxyl-bonded Co single-atom sites on boroncarbonitride surface (BCN-OH2/Co1) is constructed. The experimental and theoretical prediction results confirm that the hydroxyl group on the surface and the electronic band structure of BCN-OH2/Co1 are the key factor in regulating the O2 reduction pathway. In addition, the hydroxyl-bonded Co single-atom sites can further enrich O2 molecules with more electrons, which can avoid the one-electron reduction of O2 to •O2 -, thus promoting the direct two-electron activation hydrogenation of O2. Consequently, BCN-OH2/Co1 exhibits a high H2O2 evolution apparent quantum efficiency of 0.8% at 850 nm, better than most of the previously reported photocatalysts. This study reveals an important reaction pathway for the generation of H2O2, emphasizing that precise control of the active site structure of the photocatalyst is essential for achieving efficient conversion of solar-to-chemical.

Fundamental Structural and Electronic Understanding of Palladium Catalysts on Nitride and Oxide Supports

The nature of the support can fundamentally affect the function of a heterogeneous catalyst. For the novel type of isolated metal atom catalysts, sometimes referred to as single-atom catalysts, systematic correlations are still rare. Here, we report a general finding that Pd on nitride supports (non-metal and metal nitride) features a higher oxidation state compared to that on oxide supports (non-metal and metal oxide). Through thorough oxidation state investigations by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO-DRIFTS, and density functional theory (DFT) coupled with Bader charge analysis, it is found that Pd atoms prefer to interact with surface hydroxyl group to form a Pd(OH)x species on oxide supports, while on nitride supports, Pd atoms incorporate into the surface structure in the form of Pd-N bonds. Moreover, a correlation was built between the formal oxidation state and computational Bader charge, based on the periodic trend in electronegativity.

Sub-Band Assisted Z-Scheme for Effective Non-Sacrificial H2O2 Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis of H2O2 from earth-abundant O2 and H2O molecules offers an eco-friendly route for solar-to-chemical conversion. The persistent challenge is to tune the photo-/thermo- dynamics of a photocatalyst toward efficient electron-hole separation while maintaining an effective driving force for charge transfer. Such a case is achieved here by way of a synergetic strategy of sub-band-assisted Z-Scheme for effective H2O2 photosynthesis via direct O2 reduction and H2O oxidation without a sacrificial agent. The optimized SnS2/g-C3N4 heterojunction shows a high reactivity of 623.0 µmol g-1 h-1 for H2O2 production under visible-light irradiation (λ > 400 nm) in pure water, ≈6 times higher than pristine g-C3N4 (100.5 µmol g-1 h-1). Photodynamic characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the enhanced photoactivity is due to a markedly promoted lifetime of trapped active electrons (204.9 ps in the sub-band and >2.0 ns in a shallow band) and highly improved O2 activation, as a result of the formation of a suitable sub-band and catalytic sites along with a low Gibbs-free energy for charge transfer. Moreover, the Z-Scheme heterojunction creates and sustains a large driving force for O2 and H2O conversion to high value-added H2O2.

Enhancing Photosynthesis Efficiency of Hydrogen Peroxide by Modulating Side Chains to Facilitate Water Oxidation at Low-Energy Barrier Sites

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a crucial oxidant in advanced oxidation processes. In situ, photosynthesis of it in natural water holds the promise of practical application for water remediation. However, current photosynthesis of H2O2 systems primarily relies on oxygen reduction, leading to limited performance in natural water with low dissolved oxygen or anaerobic conditions found in polluted water. Herein, a novel photocatalyst based on conjugated polymers with alternating electron donor-acceptor structures and electron-withdrawing side chains on electron donors is introduced. Specifically, carbazole functions as the electron donor, triazine serves as the electron acceptor, and cyano acts as the electron-withdrawing side chain. Notably, the photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable solar-to-chemical conversion of 0.64%, the highest reported in natural water. Furthermore, even in anaerobic conditions, it achieves an impressive H2O2 photosynthetic efficiency of 1365 µmol g-1 h-1, surpassing all the reported photosynthetic systems of H2O2. This remarkable improvement is attributed to the effective relocation of the water oxidation active site from a high-energy carbazole to a low-energy acetylene site mediated by the side chains, resulting in enhanced O2 or H2O2 generation from water. This breakthrough offers a new avenue for efficient water remediation using advanced oxidation technologies in oxygen-limited environments, holding significant implications for environmental restoration.

Emerging single-atom catalysts in the detection and purification of contaminated gases

Single atom catalysts (SACs) show exceptional molecular adsorption and electron transfer capabilities owing to their remarkable atomic efficiency and tunable electronic structure, thereby providing promising solutions for diverse important processes including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, etc. Consequently, SACs hold great potential in the detection and degradation of pollutants present in contaminated gases. Over the past few years, SACs have made remarkable achievements in the field of contaminated gas detection and purification. In this review, we first provide a concise introduction to the significance and urgency of gas detection and pollutant purification, followed by a comprehensive overview of the structural feature identification methods for SACs. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the three key properties of SACs for detecting contaminated gases and discuss the research progress made in utilizing SACs to purify polluted gases. Finally, we analyze the enhancement mechanism and advantages of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification, and propose strategies to address challenges and expedite the development of SACs in polluted gas detection and purification.

Noble-Metal-Free Single- and Dual-Atom Catalysts for Artificial Photosynthesis

Artificial photosynthesis enables direct solar-to-chemical energy conversion aimed at mitigating environmental pollution and producing solar fuels and chemicals in a green and sustainable approach, and efficient, robust, and low-cost photocatalysts are the heart of artificial photosynthesis systems. As an emerging new class of cocatalytic materials, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have received a great deal of current attention due to their maximal atom utilization and unique photocatalytic properties, whereas noble-metal-free ones impart abundance, availability, and cost-effectiveness allowing for scalable implementation. This review outlines the fundamental principles and synthetic methods of SACs and DACs and summarizes the most recent advances in SACs (Co, Fe, Cu, Ni, Bi, Al, Sn, Er, La, Ba, etc.) and DACs (CuNi, FeCo, InCu, KNa, CoCo, CuCu, etc.) based on non-noble metals, confined on an arsenal of organic or inorganic substrates (polymeric carbon nitride, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, carbon, etc.) acting as versatile scaffolds in solar-light-driven photocatalytic reactions, including hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, methane conversion, organic synthesis, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide production, and environmental remediation. The review concludes with the challenges, opportunities, and future prospects of noble-metal-free SACs and DACs for artificial photosynthesis.

Machine Learning-Assistant Colorimetric Sensor Arrays for Intelligent and Rapid Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can lead to pyelonephritis, urosepsis, and even death, are among the most prevalent infectious diseases worldwide, with a notable increase in treatment costs due to the emergence of drug-resistant pathogens. Current diagnostic strategies for UTIs, such as urine culture and flow cytometry, require time-consuming protocols and expensive equipment. We present here a machine learning-assisted colorimetric sensor array based on recognition of ligand-functionalized Fe single-atom nanozymes (SANs) for the identification of microorganisms at the order, genus, and species levels. Colorimetric sensor arrays are built from the SAN Fe1-NC functionalized with four types of recognition ligands, generating unique microbial identification fingerprints. By integrating the colorimetric sensor arrays with a trained computational classification model, the platform can identify more than 10 microorganisms in UTI urine samples within 1 h. Diagnostic accuracy of up to 97% was achieved in 60 UTI clinical samples, holding great potential for translation into clinical practice applications.

Rationally Designed Cyclooctatetrathiophene-Based Porous Aromatic Frameworks (COTh-PAFs) for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Constructing stable and efficient photocatalysts for H2O2 production is of great importance and is challenging. In this study, the synthesis of three photoactive cyclooctatetrathiophene (COTh)-based porous aromatic frameworks (COTh-PAFs) in an alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) fashion is presented. In combination with a triazine-derived electron acceptor, PAF-363 exhibits high efficiency for the photosynthesis of H2O2 with production rates of 11733 μmol g-1 h-1(with sacrificial agent) and 3930 μmol g-1 h-1 (without sacrificial agent) from water and oxygen under visible light irradiation. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the charge transfer positions and the O2 adsorption sites in PAF-363 are both concentrated on COTh fragments, which facilitate the H2O2 production through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. This work highlights that the rational design of COTh-PAFs with consideration of D-A direction, charge transfer positions, and O2 adsorption sites provides a feasible access to efficient H2O2 production photocatalysts.

Enhancing photocatalytic H2O2 production with Au co-catalysts through electronic structure modification

Gold-based co-catalysts are a promising class of materials with potential applications in photocatalytic H2O2 production. However, current approaches with Au co-catalysts show limited H2O2 production due to intrinsically weak O2 adsorption at the Au site. We report an approach to strengthen O2 adsorption at Au sites, and to improve H2O2 production, through the formation of electron-deficient Auδ+ sites by modifying the electronic structure. In this case, we report the synthesis of TiO2/MoSx-Au, following selective deposition of Au onto a MoSx surface which is then further anchored onto TiO2. We further show that the catalyst achieves a significantly increased H2O2 production rate of 30.44 mmol g-1 h-1 in O2-saturated solution containing ethanol. Density functional theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveal that the MoSx mediator induces the formation of electron-deficient Auδ+ sites thereby decreasing the antibonding-orbital occupancy of Au-Oads and subsequently enhancing O2 adsorption. This strategy may be useful for rationally designing the electronic structure of catalyst surfaces to facilitate artificial photosynthesis.

Spaced Double Hydrogen Bonding in an Imidazole Poly Ionic Liquid Composite for Highly Efficient and Selective Photocatalytic Air Reductive H2O2 Synthesis

Photocatalytic oxygen reductive H2O2 production is a promising approach to alternative industrial anthraquinone processes while suffering from the requirement of pure O2 feedstock for practical application. Herein, we report a spaced double hydrogen bond (IC-H-bond) through multi-component Radziszewski reaction in an imidazole poly-ionic-liquid composite (SI-PIL-TiO2) and levofloxacin hydrochloride (LEV) electron donor for highly efficient and selective photocatalytic air reductive H2O2 production. It is found that the IC-H-bond formed by spaced imino (-NH-) group of SI-PIL-TiO2 and carbonyl (-C=O) group of LEV can switch the imidazole active sites characteristic from a covered state to a fully exposed one to shield the strong adsorption of electron donor and N2 in the air, and propel an intenser positive potential and more efficient orbitals binding patterns of SI-PIL-TiO2 surface to establish competitive active sites for selectivity O2 chemisorption. Moreover, the high electron enrichment of imidazole as an active site for the 2e- oxygen reduction ensures the rapid reduction of O2. Therefore, the IC-H-bond enables a total O2 utilization and conversion efficiency of 94.8 % from direct photocatalytic air reduction, achieving a H2O2 production rate of 1518 μmol/g/h that is 16 and 23 times compared to poly-ionic-liquid composite without spaced imino groups (PIL-TiO2) and TiO2, respectively.

Photochemical tuning of dynamic defects for high-performance atomically dispersed catalysts

Developing active and stable atomically dispersed catalysts is challenging because of weak non-specific interactions between catalytically active metal atoms and supports. Here we demonstrate a general method for synthesizing atomically dispersed catalysts via photochemical defect tuning for controlling oxygen-vacancy dynamics, which can induce specific metal-support interactions. The developed synthesis method offers metal-dynamically stabilized atomic catalysts, and it can be applied to reducible metal oxides, including TiO2, ZnO and CeO2, containing various catalytically active transition metals, including Pt, Ir and Cu. The optimized Pt-DSA/TiO2 shows unprecedentedly high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity, producing 164 mmol g-1 h-1 with a turnover frequency of 1.27 s-1. Furthermore, it generates 42.2 mmol gsub-1 of hydrogen via a non-recyclable-plastic-photoreforming process, achieving a total conversion of 98%; this offers a promising solution for mitigating plastic waste and simultaneously producing valuable energy sources.

Surface Engineered Single-atom Systems for Energy Conversion

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are demonstrated to show exceptional reactivity and selectivity in catalytic reactions by effectively utilizing metal species, making them a favorable choice among the different active materials for energy conversion. However, SACs are still in the early stages of energy conversion, and problems like agglomeration and low energy conversion efficiency are hampering their practical applications. Substantial research focus on support modifications, which are vital for SAC reactivity and stability due to the intimate relationship between metal atoms and support. In this review, a category of supports and a variety of surface engineering strategies employed in SA systems are summarized, including surface site engineering (heteroatom doping, vacancy introducing, surface groups grafting, and coordination tunning) and surface structure engineering (size/morphology control, cocatalyst deposition, facet engineering, and crystallinity control). Also, the merits of support surface engineering in single-atom systems are systematically introduced. Highlights are the comprehensive summary and discussions on the utilization of surface-engineered SACs in diversified energy conversion applications including photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermocatalysis, and energy conversion devices. At the end of this review, the potential and obstacles of using surface-engineered SACs in the field of energy conversion are discussed. This review aims to guide the rational design and manipulation of SACs for target-specific applications by capitalizing on the characteristic benefits of support surface engineering.

Keto-anthraquinone covalent organic framework for H2O2 photosynthesis with oxygen and alkaline water

Hydrogen peroxide photosynthesis suffers from insufficient catalytic activity due to the high energy barrier of hydrogen extraction from H2O. Herein, we report that mechanochemically synthesized keto-form anthraquinone covalent organic framework which is able to directly synthesize H2O2 (4784 μmol h-1 g-1 at λ > 400 nm) from oxygen and alkaline water (pH = 13) in the absence of any sacrificial reagents. The strong alkalinity resulted in the formation of OH-(H2O)n clusters in water, which were adsorbed on keto moieties within the framework and then dissociated into O2 and active hydrogen, because the energy barrier of hydrogen extraction was largely lowered. The produced hydrogen reacted with anthraquinone to generate anthrahydroquinone, which was subsequently oxidized by O2 to produce H2O2. This study ultimately sheds light on the importance of hydrogen extraction from H2O for H2O2 photosynthesis and demonstrates that H2O2 synthesis is achievable under alkaline conditions.

Weak-Field Electro-Flash Induced Asymmetric Catalytic Sites toward Efficient Solar Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Borocarbonitride (BCN), in a mesoscopic asymmetric state, is regarded as a promising photocatalyst for artificial photosynthesis. However, BCN materials reported in the literature primarily consist of symmetric N-[B]3 units, which generate highly spatial coupled electron-hole pairs upon irradiation, thus kinetically suppressing the solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency. Here, we propose a facile and fast weak-field electro-flash strategy, with which structural symmetry breaking is introduced on key nitrogen sites. As-obtained double-substituted BCN (ds-BCN) possesses high-concentration asymmetric [B]2-N-C coordination, which displays a highly separated electron-hole state and broad visible-light harvesting, as well as provides electron-rich N sites for O2 affinity. Thereby, ds-BCN delivers an apparent quantum yield of 7.6% at 400 nm and a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.3% for selective 2e-reduction of O2 to H2O2, over 4-fold higher than that of the traditional calcined BCN analogue and superior to the metal-free C3N4-based photocatalysts reported so far. The weak-field electro-flash method and as-induced catalytic site symmetry-breaking methodologically provide a new method for the fast and low-cost fabrication of efficient nonmetallic catalysts toward solar-to-chemical conversions.

Large-Scale Continuous and In Situ Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide by Sulfur-Functionalized Polymer Catalyst for Water Treatment

Photocatalytic H2 O2 generation system based on polymer catalyst receives increasing attention in recent years; however, the insufficient charge separation efficiency and low oxygen adsorption/activation capacity severely limit their potential application. In this study, a sulfur (C=S) functionalized polymer catalyst is reported through a green water-mediated and catalyst-free multi-component reactions (MCRs) route. The sulfur functional group endows the polymer with a suitable energy band and facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair. The reported polymer achieves a high H2 O2 production efficiency (3132 μmol g-1  h-1 ) in pure water without oxygen aeration. To demonstrate their potential in in situ wastewater treatment, a panel reactor system (20×20 cm) is constructed for large-scale production of H2 O2 , which realizes continuous degradation of emerging pollutants including antibiotics and bisphenol A under natural sunlight irradiation condition. The H2 O2 utilization efficiency of the photo-self-Fenton system using in situ generated H2 O2 is found 7.9 times higher than that of the traditional photo-Fenton system. This study offers new insights in green synthesis and design of functional polymer photocatalyst, and demonstrates the feasibility of panel reactor system for large-scale continuous H2 O2 photocatalytic production and water treatment.

Guiding the Driving Factors on Plasma Super-Photothermal S-Scheme Core-Shell Nanoreactor to Enhance Photothermal Catalytic H2 Evolution and Selective CO2 Reduction

Light-induced heat has a non-negligible role in photocatalytic reactions. However, it is still challenging to design highly efficient catalysts that can make use of light and thermal energy synergistically. Herein, the study proposes a plasma super-photothermal S-scheme heterojunction core-shell nanoreactor based on manipulation of the driving factors, which consists of α-Fe2 O3 encapsulated by g-C3 N4 modified with gold quantum dots. α-Fe2 O3 can promote carrier spatial separation while also acting as a thermal core to radiate heat to the shell, while Au quantum dots transfer energetic electrons and heat to g-C3 N4 via surface plasmon resonance. Consequently, the catalytic activity of Au/α-Fe2 O3 @g-C3 N4 is significantly improved by internal and external double hot spots, and it shows an H2 evolution rate of 5762.35 µmol h-1 g-1 , and the selectivity of CO2 conversion to CH4 is 91.2%. This work provides an effective strategy to design new plasma photothermal catalysts for the solar-to-fuel transition.

2D/2D Heterojunction of BiOBr/BiOI Nanosheets for In Situ H2 O2 Production and Activation toward Efficient Photocatalytic Wastewater Treatment

The presence of toxic organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses significant threats to human health and global ecosystems. Photocatalysis that enables in situ production and activation of H2 O2 presents a promising approach for pollutant removal; however, the processes of H2 O2 production and activation potentially compete for active sites and charge carriers on the photocatalyst surface, leading to limited catalytic performance. Herein, a hierarchical 2D/2D heterojunction nanosphere composed of ultrathin BiOBr and BiOI nanosheets (BiOBr/BiOI) is developed by a one-pot microwave-assisted synthesis to achieve in situ H2 O2 production and activation for efficient photocatalytic wastewater treatment. Various experimental and characterization results reveal that the BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction facilitates efficient electron transfer from BiOBr to BiOI, enabling the one-step two-electron O2 reduction for H2 O2 production. Moreover, the ultrathin BiOI provides abundant active sites for H2 O2 adsorption, promoting in situ H2 O2 activation for •O2 - generation. As a result, the BiOBr/BiOI hybrid exhibits excellent activity for pollutant degradation with an apparent rate constant of 0.141 min-1 , which is 3.8 and 47.3 times that of pristine BiOBr and BiOI, respectively. This work expands the range of the materials suitable for in situ H2 O2 production and activation, paving the way toward sustainable environmental remediation using solar energy.

Rejoint of Carbon Nitride Fragments into Multi-Interfacial Order-Disorder Homojunction for Robust Photo-Driven Generation of H2 O2

Photocatalytic technology based on carbon nitride (C3 N4 ) offers a sustainable and clean approach for hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) production, but the yield is severely limited by the sluggish hot carriers due to the weak internal electric field. In this study, a novel approach is devised by fragmenting bulk C3 N4  into smaller pieces (CN-NH4 ) and then subjecting it to a directed healing process to create multiple order-disorder interfaces (CN-NH4 -NaK). The resulting junctions in CN-NH4 -NaK significantly boost charge dynamics and facilitate more spatially and orderly separated redox centers. As a result, CN-NH4 -NaK demonstrates outstanding photosynthesis of H2 O2 via both two-step single-electron and one-step double-electron oxygen reduction pathways, achieving a remarkable yield of 16675 µmol h-1  g-1 , excellent selectivity (> 91%), and a prominent solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency exceeding 2.3%. These remarkable results surpass pristine C3 N4 by 158 times and outperform previously reported C3 N4 -based photocatalysts. This work represents a significant advancement in catalyst design and modification technology, inspiring the development of more efficient metal-free photocatalysts for the synthesis of highly valued fuels.

In situ Activation of Molecular Oxygen at Intermetallic Spacing-Optimized Iron Network-Like Sites for Boosting Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyzed by transition-metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) is promising for practical applications in energy-conversion devices, but great challenges still remain due to the sluggish kinetics of O═O cleavage. Herein, a kind of high-density iron network-like sites catalysts are constructed with optimized intermetallic distances on an amino-functionalized carbon matrix (Fe-HDNSs). Quasi-in situ soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and in situ synchrotron infrared characterizations demonstrate that the optimized intermetallic distances in Fe-HDNSs can in situ activate the molecular oxygen by fast electron compensation through the hybridized Fe 3d-O 2p, which efficiently facilitates the cleavage of the O═O bond to *O species and highly suppresses the side reactions for an accelerated kinetics of the 4e- ORR. As a result, the well-designed Fe-HDNSs catalysts exhibit superior performances with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a kinetic current density of 72 mA cm-2 @0.80 V versus RHE, exceeding most of the noble-metal-free ORR catalysts. This work offers some new insights into the understanding of 4e- ORR kinetics and reaction pathways to boost electrochemical performances of SACs.

Single Zn Atoms with Acetate-Anion-Enabled Asymmetric Coordination for Efficient H2 O2 Photosynthesis

Exploring unique single-atom sites capable of efficiently reducing O2 to H2 O2 while being inert to H2 O2 decomposition under light conditions is significant for H2 O2 photosynthesis, but it remains challenging. Herein, we report the facile design and fabrication of polymeric carbon nitride (CN) decorated with single-Zn sites that have tailorable local coordination environments, which is enabled by utilizing different Zn salt anions. Specifically, the O atom from acetate (OAc) anion participates in the coordination of single-Zn sites on CN, forming asymmetric Zn-N3 O moiety on CN (denoted as CN/Zn-OAc), in contrast to the obtained Zn-N4 sites when sulfate (SO4 ) is adopted (CN/Zn-SO4 ). Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the Zn-N3 O moiety exhibits higher intrinsic activity for O2 reduction to H2 O2 than the Zn-N4 moiety. This is attributed to the asymmetric N/O coordination, which promotes the adsorption of O2 and the formation of the key intermediate *OOH on Zn sites due to their modulated electronic structure. Moreover, it is inactive for H2 O2 decomposition under both dark and light conditions. As a result, the optimized CN/Zn-OAc catalyst exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic H2 O2 production activity under visible light irradiation.

Triple-Phase Photocatalytic H2O2 Production on a Janus Fiber Membrane with Asymmetric Hydrophobicity

Photocatalytic O2 reduction is an intriguing approach to producing H2O2, but its efficiency is often hindered by the limited solubility and mass transfer of O2 in the aqueous phase. Here, we design and fabricate a two-layered (2L) Janus fiber membrane photocatalyst with asymmetric hydrophobicity for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production. The top layer of the membrane consists of superhydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers with a dispersed modified carbon nitride (mCN) photocatalyst. Amphiphilic Nafion (Naf) ionomer is sprayed onto this layer to modulate the microenvironment and achieve moderate hydrophobicity. In contrast, the bottom layer consists of bare PTFE fibers with high hydrophobicity. The elaborate structural configuration and asymmetric hydrophobicity feature of the optimized membrane photocatalyst (designated as 2L-mCN/F-Naf; F, PTFE) allow most mCN to be exposed with gas-liquid-solid triple-phase interfaces and enable rapid mass transfer of gaseous O2 within the hierarchical membrane, thus increasing the local O2 concentration near the mCN photocatalyst. As a result, the optimized 2L-mCN/F-Naf membrane photocatalyst shows remarkable photocatalytic H2O2 production activity, achieving a rate of 5.38 mmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation.

Efficient Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide by Cyano-Containing Covalent Organic Frameworks from Water, Air and Sunlight

The insufficient exciton (e- -h+ pair) separation/transfer and sluggish two-electron water oxidation are two main factors limiting the H2 O2 photosynthetic efficiency of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) photocatalysts. Herein, we present an alternative strategy to simultaneously facilitate exciton separation/transfer and reduce the energy barrier of two-electron water oxidation in COFs via a dicyano functionalization. The in situ characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that the dicyano functionalization improves the amount of charge transfer channels between donor and acceptor units from two in COF-0CN without cyano functionalization to three in COF-1CN with mono-cyano functionalization and four in COF-2CN with dicyano functionalization, leading to the highest separation/transfer efficiency in COF-2CN. More importantly, the dicyano group activates the neighbouring C atom to produce the key *OH intermediate for effectively reducing the energy barrier of rate-determining two-electron water oxidation in H2 O2 photosynthesis. The simultaneously enhanced exciton separation/transfer and two-electron water oxidation in COF-2CN result in high H2 O2 yield (1601 μmol g-1  h-1 ) from water and oxygen without using sacrificial reagent under visible-light irradiation. COF-2CN can effectively yield H2 O2 in water with wide pH range, in different real water samples, in scaled-up reactor under natural sunlight irradiation, and in continuous-flow reactor for consecutively producing H2 O2 solution for water decontamination.

Atomically isolated Sb(CN)3 on sp2-c-COFs with balanced hydrophilic and oleophilic sites for photocatalytic C-H activation

Activation of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds is of utmost importance for the synthesis of vital molecules. Toward achieving efficient photocatalytic C-H activation, our investigation revealed that incorporating hydrophilic C≡N-Sb(CN)3 sites into hydrophobic sp2 carbon-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (sp2-c-COFs) had a dual effect: It simultaneously enhanced charge separation and improved generation of polar reactive oxygen species. Detailed spectroscopy measurements and simulations showed that C≡N-Sb(CN)3 primarily functioned as water capture sites, which were not directly involved in photocatalysis. However, the potent interaction between water molecules and the Sb(CN)3-modified framework notably enhanced charge dynamics in hydrophobic sp2-c-COFs. The reactive species ·O2- and ·OH (ad) subsequently combined with benzyl radical, leading to the formation of benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, and lastly benzyl benzoate. Notably, the Sb(CN)3-modified sp2-c-COFs exhibited a 54-fold improvement in reaction rate as compared to pristine sp2-c-COFs, which achieved a remarkable 68% conversion rate for toluene and an 80% selectivity for benzyl benzoate.

Converting formaldehyde in methanol with MoO2 under irradiation: A pollution-free strategy for cleaning air

Direct photocatalytic reduction of toxic formaldehyde (HCHO) in value-added chemicals and fuels is promising because that not only abates the environmental pollution, but also solves the energy shortage. Herein, self-supported MoO2 and MoO3 nanoparticles growing on Mo meshes were comparatively applied to the photocatalytic conversion of HCHO. Under UV-visble lights, MoO2 reduces HCHO in methanol (CH3OH) while MoO3 oxidizes HCHO in carbon oxide and water. Their contrary photocatalytic capacities were revealed. Compared with MoO3, the lower work function of MoO2 enables an electron-rich interface, realizing a complete reduction of 30 ppm HCHO to CH3OH in 30 min. Theoretical calculations clarify that a large number of delocalized electrons on MoO2 attracts HCHO molecule and activates its CO bond, facilitating subsequent hydrogenation and reduction of HCHO to CH3OH. As for MoO3, the wider bandgap and higher potential of valence band govern the photocatalytic oxidation of HCHO.

Embedding electronic perpetual motion into single-atom catalysts for persistent Fenton-like reactions

In our quest to leverage the capabilities of the emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) for wastewater purification, we confronted fundamental challenges related to electron scarcity and instability. Through meticulous theoretical calculations, we identified optimal placements for nitrogen vacancies (Nv) and iron (Fe) single-atom sites, uncovering a dual-site approach that significantly amplified visible-light absorption and charge transfer dynamics. Informed by these computational insights, we cleverly integrated Nv into the catalyst design to boost electron density around iron atoms, yielding a potent and flexible photoactivator for benign peracetic acid. This exceptional catalyst exhibited remarkable stability and effectively degraded various organic contaminants over 20 cycles with self-cleaning properties. Specifically, the Nv sites captured electrons, enabling their swift transfer to adjacent Fe sites under visible light irradiation. This mechanism accelerated the reduction of the formed "peracetic acid-catalyst" intermediate. Theoretical calculations were used to elucidate the synergistic interplay of dual mechanisms, illuminating increased adsorption and activation of reactive molecules. Furthermore, electron reduction pathways on the conduction band were elaborately explored, unveiling the production of reactive species that enhanced photocatalytic processes. A six-flux model and associated parameters were also applied to precisely optimize the photocatalytic process, providing invaluable insights for future photocatalyst design. Overall, this study offers a molecule-level insight into the rational design of robust SACs in a photo-Fenton-like system, with promising implications for wastewater treatment and other high-value applications.

Magnetic Field Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction via Oxygen Diffusion Speedup

The mass-transfer of oxygen in liquid phases (including in the bulk electrolyte and near the electrode surface) is a critical step to deliver oxygen to catalyst sites (especially immersed catalyst sites) and use the full capacity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Despite the extensive efforts of optimizing the complex three-phase reaction interfaces to enhance the gaseous oxygen transfer, strong limitations remain due to oxygen's poor solubility and slow diffusion in electrolytes. Herein, a magnetic method for boosting the directional hydrodynamic pumping of oxygen toward immersed catalyst sites is demonstrated which allows the ORR to reach otherwise inaccessible catalytic regions where high currents normally would have depleted oxygen. For Pt foil electrodes without forced oxygen saturation in KOH electrolytes, the mass-transfer-limited current densities can be improved by 60% under an external magnetic field of 435 mT due to the synergistic effect between bulk- and surface-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows induced by Lorentz forces. The residual magnetic fields are further used at the surface of magnetic materials (such as CoPt alloys and Pt/FeCo heterostructures) to enhance the surface-MHD effect, which helps to retain part of the ORR enhancement permanently without applying external magnetic fields.

Halogen-Modulated 2D Coordination Polymers for Efficient Hydrogen Peroxide Photosynthesis under Air and Pure Water Conditions

H2 O2 is a widely used eco-friendly oxidant and a potential energy carrier. Photocatalytic H2 O2 production from water and O2 is an ideal approach with the potential to address the current energy crisis and environmental issues. Three zig-zag two-dimensional coordination polymers (2D CPs), named CuX-dptz, were synthesized by a rapid and facile method at room temperature, showing preeminent H2 O2 photoproduction performance under pure water and open air without any additives. CuBr-dptz exhibits a H2 O2 production rate high up to 1874 μmol g-1  h-1 , exceeding most reported photocatalysts under this condition, even comparable to those supported by sacrificial agents and O2 . The coordination environment of Cu can be modulated by halogen atoms (X=Cl, Br, I), which in turn affects the electron transfer process and finally determines the reaction activity. This is the first time that 2D CPs have been used for photocatalytic H2 O2 production in such challenging conditions, which provides a new pathway for the development of portable in situ H2 O2 photosynthesis devices.
