Intracellular Temperature Sensing: An Ultra-bright Luminescent Nanothermometer with Non-sensitivity to pH and Ionic Strength

Ion-induced bias in Ag2S luminescent nanothermometers

Luminescence nanothermometry allows measuring temperature remotely and in a minimally invasive way by using the luminescence signal provided by nanosized materials. This technology has allowed, for example, the determination of intracellular temperature and in vivo monitoring of thermal processes in animal models. However, in the biomedical context, this sensing technology is crippled by the presence of bias (cross-sensitivity) that reduces the reliability of the thermal readout. Bias occurs when the impact of environmental conditions different from temperature also modifies the luminescence of the nanothermometers. Several sources that cause loss of reliability have been identified, mostly related to spectral distortions due to interaction between photons and biological tissues. In this work, we unveil an unexpected source of bias induced by metal ions. Specifically, we demonstrate that the reliability of Ag2S nanothermometers is compromised during the monitoring of photothermal processes produced by iron oxide nanoparticles. The observed bias occurs due to the heat-induced release of iron ions, which interact with the surface of the Ag2S nanothermometers, enhancing their emission. The results herein reported raise a warning to the community working on luminescence nanothermometry, since they reveal that the possible sources of bias in complex biological environments, rich in molecules and ions, are more numerous than previously expected.

Current and future technologies for monitoring cultured meat: A review

The high population growth rate, massive animal food consumption, fast economic progress, and limited food resources could lead to a food crisis in the future. There is a huge requirement for dietary proteins including cultured meat is being progressed to fulfill the need for meat-derived proteins in the diet. However, production of cultured meat requires monitoring numerous bioprocess parameters. This review presents a comprehensive overview of various widely adopted techniques (optical, spectroscopic, electrochemical, capacitive, FETs, resistive, microscopy, and ultrasound) for monitoring physical, chemical, and biological parameters that can improve the bioprocess control in cultured meat. The methods, operating principle, merits/demerits, and the main open challenges are reviewed with the aim to support the readers in advancing knowledge on novel sensing systems for cultured meat applications.

Spotlight on Luminescence Thermometry: Basics, Challenges, and Cutting-Edge Applications

Luminescence (nano)thermometry is a remote sensing technique that relies on the temperature dependency of the luminescence features (e.g., bandshape, peak energy or intensity, and excited state lifetimes and risetimes) of a phosphor to measure temperature. This technique provides precise thermal readouts with superior spatial resolution in short acquisition times. Although luminescence thermometry is just starting to become a more mature subject, it exhibits enormous potential in several areas, e.g., optoelectronics, photonics, micro- and nanofluidics, and nanomedicine. This work reviews the latest trends in the field, including the establishment of a comprehensive theoretical background and standardized practices. The reliability, repeatability, and reproducibility of the technique are also discussed, along with the use of multiparametric analysis and artificial-intelligence algorithms to enhance thermal readouts. In addition, examples are provided to underscore the challenges that luminescence thermometry faces, alongside the need for a continuous search and design of new materials, experimental techniques, and analysis procedures to improve the competitiveness, accessibility, and popularity of the technology.

Less is more: dimensionality reduction as a general strategy for more precise luminescence thermometry

Thermal resolution (also referred to as temperature uncertainty) establishes the minimum discernible temperature change sensed by luminescent thermometers and is a key figure of merit to rank them. Much has been done to minimize its value via probe optimization and correction of readout artifacts, but little effort was put into a better exploitation of calibration datasets. In this context, this work aims at providing a new perspective on the definition of luminescence-based thermometric parameters using dimensionality reduction techniques that emerged in the last years. The application of linear (Principal Component Analysis) and non-linear (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding) transformations to the calibration datasets obtained from rare-earth nanoparticles and semiconductor nanocrystals resulted in an improvement in thermal resolution compared to the more classical intensity-based and ratiometric approaches. This, in turn, enabled precise monitoring of temperature changes smaller than 0.1 °C. The methods here presented allow choosing superior thermometric parameters compared to the more classical ones, pushing the performance of luminescent thermometers close to the experimentally achievable limits.

Carbon nano-dot for cancer studies as dual nano-sensor for imaging intracellular temperature or pH variation

Cellular temperature and pH govern many cellular physiologies, especially of cancer cells. Besides, attaining higher cellular temperature plays key role in therapeutic efficacy of hyperthermia treatment of cancer. This requires bio-compatible, non-toxic and sensitive probe with dual sensing ability to detect temperature and pH variations. In this regard, fluorescence based nano-sensors for cancer studies play an important role. Therefore, a facile green synthesis of orange carbon nano-dots (CND) with high quantum yield of 90% was achieved and its application as dual nano-sensor for imaging intracellular temperature and pH was explored. CND was synthesized from readily available, bio-compatible citric acid and rhodamine 6G hydrazide using solvent-free and simple heating technique requiring purification by dialysis. Although the particle size of 19 nm (which is quite large for CND) was observed yet CND exhibits no surface defects leading to decrease in photoluminescence (PL). On the contrary, very high fluorescence was observed along with good photo-stability. Temperature and pH dependent fluorescence studies show linearity in fluorescence intensity which was replicated in breast cancer cells. In addition, molecular nature of PL of CND was established using pH dependent fluorescence study. Together, the current investigation showed synthesis of highly fluorescent orange CND, which acts as a sensitive bio-imaging probe: an optical nano-thermal or nano-pH sensor for cancer-related studies.

A Computable Gaussian Quantum Correlation for Continuous-Variable Systems

Generally speaking, it is difficult to compute the values of the Gaussian quantum discord and Gaussian geometric discord for Gaussian states, which limits their application. In the present paper, for any (n+m)-mode continuous-variable system, a computable Gaussian quantum correlation M is proposed. For any state ρAB of the system, M(ρAB) depends only on the covariant matrix of ρAB without any measurements performed on a subsystem or any optimization procedures, and thus is easily computed. Furthermore, M has the following attractive properties: (1) M is independent of the mean of states, is symmetric about the subsystems and has no ancilla problem; (2) M is locally Gaussian unitary invariant; (3) for a Gaussian state ρAB, M(ρAB)=0 if and only if ρAB is a product state; and (4) 0≤M((ΦA⊗ΦB)ρAB)≤M(ρAB) holds for any Gaussian state ρAB and any Gaussian channels ΦA and ΦB performed on the subsystem A and B, respectively. Therefore, M is a nice Gaussian correlation which describes the same Gaussian correlation as Gaussian quantum discord and Gaussian geometric discord when restricted on Gaussian states. As an application of M, a noninvasive quantum method for detecting intracellular temperature is proposed.

Ultrabright fluorescent nanothermometers

Here we report on the first ultrabright fluorescent nanothermometers, ∼50 nm-size particles, capable of measuring temperature in 3D and down to the nanoscale. The temperature is measured through the recording of the ratio of fluorescence intensities of fluorescent dyes encapsulated inside the nanochannels of the silica matrix of each nanothermometer. The brightness of each particle excited at 488 nm is equivalent to the fluorescence coming from 150 molecules of rhodamine 6G and 1700 molecules of rhodamine B dyes. The fluorescence of both dyes is excited with a single wavelength due to the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). We demonstrate repeatable measurements of temperature with the uncertainty down to 0.4 K and a constant sensitivity of ∼1%/K in the range of 20-50 °C, which is of particular interest for biomedical applications. Due to the high fluorescence brightness, we demonstrate the possibility of measurement of accurate 3D temperature distributions in a hydrogel. The accuracy of the measurements is confirmed by numerical simulations. We further demonstrate the use of single nanothermometers to measure temperature. As an example, 5-8 nanothermometers are sufficient to measure temperature with an error of 2 K (with the measurement time of >0.7 s).

Synergy between NIR luminescence and thermal emission toward highly sensitive NIR operating emissive thermometry

There are many figures of merit, which determine suitability of luminescent thermometers for practical applications. These include thermal sensitivity, thermal accuracy as well as ease and cost effectivness of technical implementation. A novel contactless emission thermometer is proposed, which takes advantage of the coexistence of photoluminescence from Nd³⁺ doping ions and black body emission in transparent Nd³⁺ doped-oxyfluorotellurite glass host matrix. The opposite temperature dependent emission from these two phenomena, enables to achieve exceptionally high relative sensitivity S_R = 8.2%/°C at 220 °C. This enables to develop new type of emissive noncontact temperature sensors.

Temperature Sensing in the Short-Wave Infrared Spectral Region Using Core-Shell NaGdF4:Yb3+, Ho3+, Er3+@NaYF4 Nanothermometers

The short-wave infrared region (SWIR) is promising for deep-tissue visualization and temperature sensing due to higher penetration depth and reduced scattering of radiation. However, the strong quenching of luminescence in biological media and low thermal sensitivity of nanothermometers in this region are major drawbacks that limit their practical application. Nanoparticles doped with rare-earth ions are widely used as thermal sensors operating in the SWIR region through the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) approach. In this study, the effect of the shell on the sensitivity of temperature determination using NaGdF₄ nanoparticles doped with rare-earth ions (REI) Yb³⁺, Ho³⁺, and Er³⁺ coated with an inert NaYF₄ shell was investigated. We found that coating the nanoparticles with a shell significantly increases the intensity of luminescence in the SWIR range, prevents water from quenching luminescence, and decreases the temperature of laser-induced heating. Thermometry in the SWIR spectral region was demonstrated using synthesized nanoparticles in dry powder and in water. The core-shell nanoparticles obtained had intense luminescence and made it possible to determine temperatures in the range of 20–40 °C. The relative thermal sensitivity of core-shell NPs was 0.68% °C⁻¹ in water and 4.2% °C⁻¹ in dry powder.

Real-Time Intracellular Temperature Imaging Using Lanthanide-Bearing Polymeric Micelles

Measurement of thermogenesis in individual cells is a remarkable challenge due to the complexity of the biochemical environment (such as pH and ionic strength) and to the rapid and yet not well-understood heat transfer mechanisms throughout the cell. Here, we present a unique system for intracellular temperature mapping in a fluorescence microscope (uncertainty of 0.2 K) using rationally designed luminescent Ln³⁺-bearing polymeric micellar probes (Ln = Sm, Eu) incubated in breast cancer MDA-MB468 cells. Two-dimensional (2D) thermal images recorded increasing the temperature of the cells culture medium between 296 and 304 K shows inhomogeneous intracellular temperature progressions up to ∼20 degrees and subcellular gradients of ∼5 degrees between the nucleolus and the rest of the cell, illustrating the thermogenic activity of the different organelles and highlighting the potential of this tool to study intracellular processes.

Standardizing luminescence nanothermometry for biomedical applications

Luminescence nanothermometry enables accurate, remote, and all-optically-based thermal sensing. Notwithstanding its fast development, there are serious obstacles hindering reproducibility and reliable quantitative assessment of nanothermometers, which impede the intentional design, optimization and use of these sensors. These issues include ambiguities or absence of established universal rules for quantitative evaluation, incorrect assumptions about the mechanisms behind the thermal response of the sensors as well as the dependence of the nanothermometers readout on external conditions and host materials themselves. In this perspective article, we discuss these problems and propose a series of standardization guidelines to be followed. This critical discourse constitutes the first required step towards the ubiquitous acceptance, by the scientific community, of luminescence thermometry as a reliable tool for remote temperature determination in numerous practical biomedical implementations.

Study of absorption of radio frequency field by gold nanoparticles and nanoclusters in biological medium

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are gaining interest in medical diagnosis and therapy as they are bio-compatible and are easy to functionalize. Their interaction with radiofrequency (RF) field for hyperthermia treatment is ambiguous and needs further investigation. A systematic study of the absorption of capacitive RF field by AuNPs and AuNCs dispersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) is reported here in tissue mimicking phantom. The stability of AuNPs and AuNCs dispersed in PBS was confirmed for a range of pH and temperature expected during RF hyperthermia treatment. Colloidal gold solutions with AuNPs (10 nm) and AuNCs (2 nm), and control, i.e. PBS without nanogold, were loaded individually in 3 ml wells in a tissue phantom. Phantom heating was carried out using 27 MHz short-wave diathermy equipment at 200 and 400 W for control and colloidal gold solutions. Experiments were conducted for colloidal gold at varying gold concentrations (10-100 µg/ml). Temperature rise measured in the phantom wells did not show dependence on the concentration and size of the AuNPs. Furthermore, temperature rise recorded in the control was comparable with the measurements recorded in both nanogold suspensions (2, 10 nm). Dielectric property measurements of control and colloidal gold showed <3% difference in electrical conductivity between the control and colloidal gold for both nanoparticle sizes. From the measurements, it is concluded that AuNPs and AuNCs do not enhance the absorption of RF-capacitive field and power absorption observed in the biological medium is due to the ions present in the medium.

Biotechnological approach to induce human fibroblast apoptosis using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs) contribute to tumour progression and have received significant attention as a therapeutic target. These cells produce growth factors, cytokines and chemokines, stimulating cancer cell proliferation and inhibiting their apoptosis. Recent advances in drug delivery have demonstrated a significant promise of iron oxide nanoparticles in clinics as theranostic agents, mainly due to their magnetic properties. Here, we designed superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to induce apoptosis of human fibroblasts. SPIONs were synthesized via co-precipitation method and coated with sodium citrate (SPION_Cit). We assessed the intracellular uptake of SPIONs by human fibroblast cells, as well as their cytotoxicity and ability to induce thermal effects under the magnetic field. The efficiency and time of nanoparticle internalization were assessed by Prussian Blue staining, flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy. SPIONs_Cit were detected in the cytoplasm of human fibroblasts 15 min after in vitro exposure, entering into cells mainly via endocytosis. Analyses through Cell Titer Blue assay, AnnexinV-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) and propidium iodide (PI) cellular staining demonstrated that concentrations below 8 × 10^-2 mg/mL of SPIONs_Cit did not alter cell viability of human fibroblast. Furthermore, it was also demonstrated that SPIONs_Cit associated with alternating current magnetic field were able to induce hyperthermia and human fibroblast cell death in vitro, mainly through apoptosis (83.5%), activating caspase 8 (extrinsic apoptotic via) after a short exposure period. Collectively these findings suggest that our nanoplatform is biocompatible and can be used for therapeutic purposes in human biological systems, such as inducing apoptosis of CAFs.

Anti-Stokes excitation of solid-state quantum emitters for nanoscale thermometry

Color centers in solids are the fundamental constituents of a plethora of applications such as lasers, light-emitting diodes, and sensors, as well as the foundation of advanced quantum information and communication technologies. Their photoluminescence properties are usually studied under Stokes excitation, in which the emitted photons are at a lower energy than the excitation ones. In this work, we explore the opposite anti-Stokes process, where excitation is performed with lower-energy photons. We report that the process is sufficiently efficient to excite even a single quantum system-namely, the germanium-vacancy center in diamond. Consequently, we leverage the temperature-dependent, phonon-assisted mechanism to realize an all-optical nanoscale thermometry scheme that outperforms any homologous optical method used to date. Our results frame a promising approach for exploring fundamental light-matter interactions in isolated quantum systems and harness it toward the realization of practical nanoscale thermometry and sensing.

Intracellular ratiometric temperature sensing using fluorescent carbon dots

Highly sensitive non-invasive temperature sensing is critical for studying fundamental biological processes and applications in medical diagnostics. Nanoscale-based thermometers are promising non-invasive probes for precise temperature sensing with subcellular resolution. However, many of these systems have limitations as they rely on fluorescence intensity changes, deconvolution of peaks, or the use of hybrid systems to measure thermal events. To address this, we developed a fluorescence-based ratiometric temperature sensing approach using carbon dots prepared via microwave synthesis. These dots possess dual fluorescence signatures in the blue and red regions of the spectrum. We observed a linear response as a function of temperature in the range of 5-60 °C with a thermal resolution of 0.048 K-1 and thermal sensitivity of 1.97% C-1. Temperature-dependent fluorescence was also observed in HeLa cancer cells over a range of 32-42 °C by monitoring changes in the red-to-blue fluorescence signatures. We demonstrate that the ratiometric approach is superior to intensity-based thermal sensing because it is independent of the intracellular concentration of the optical probe. These findings suggest that dual-emitting carbon dots can be an effective tool for in vitro and possibly in vivo fluorescence nanothermometry.

Monitoring spin coherence of single nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds during pH changes in aqueous buffer solutions

We report on the sensing stability of quantum nanosensors in aqueous buffer solutions for the two detection schemes of quantum decoherence spectroscopy and nanoscale thermometry. The electron spin properties of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in 25 nm-sized nanodiamonds have been characterized by observing individual nanodiamonds during a continuous pH change from 4 to 11. We have determined the stability of the NV quantum sensors during the pH change as the fluctuations of ±12% and ±0.2 MHz for the spin coherence time (T₂) and the resonance frequency (ω₀) of their mean values, which are comparable to the instrument error of the measurement system. We discuss the importance of characterizing the sensing stability during the pH change and how the present observation affects the measurement scheme of nanodiamond-based NV quantum sensing.

More Than a Light Switch: Engineering Unconventional Fluorescent Configurations for Biological Sensing

Fluorescence is a powerful and sensitive tool in biological detection, used widely for cellular imaging and in vitro molecular diagnostics. Over time, three prominent conventions have emerged in the design of fluorescent biosensors: a sensor is ideally specific for its target, only one fluorescence signal turns on or off in response to the target, and each target requires its own sensor and signal combination. These are conventions but not requirements, and sensors that break with one or more of these conventions can offer new capabilities and advantages. Here, we review "unconventional" fluorescent sensor configurations based on fluorescent dyes, proteins, and nanomaterials such as quantum dots and metal nanoclusters. These configurations include multifluorophore Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) networks, temporal multiplexing, photonic logic, and cross-reactive arrays or "noses". The more complex but carefully engineered biorecognition and fluorescence signaling modalities in unconventional designs are richer in information, afford greater multiplexing capacity, and are potentially better suited to the analysis of complex biological samples, interactions, processes, and diseases. We conclude with a short perspective on the future of unconventional fluorescent sensors and encourage researchers to imagine sensing beyond the metaphorical light bulb and light switch combination.

Intracellular thermometry with fluorescent sensors for thermal biology

Temperature influences the activities of living organisms at various levels. Cells not only detect environmental temperature changes through their unique temperature-sensitive molecular machineries but also muster an appropriate response to the temperature change to maintain their inherent functions. Despite the fundamental involvement of temperature in physiological phenomena, the mechanism by which cells produce and use heat is largely unknown. Recently, fluorescent thermosensors that function as thermometers in live cells have attracted much attention in biology. These new tools, made of various temperature-sensitive molecules, have allowed for intracellular thermometry at the single-cell level. Intriguing spatiotemporal temperature variations, including organelle-specific thermogenesis, have been revealed with these fluorescent thermosensors, which suggest an intrinsic connection between temperature and cell functions. Moreover, fluorescent thermosensors have shown that intracellular temperature changes at the microscopic level are largely different from those assumed for a water environment at the macroscopic level. Thus, the employment of fluorescent thermosensors will uncover novel mechanisms of intracellular temperature-assisted physiological functions.

Non-Neurotoxic Nanodiamond Probes for Intraneuronal Temperature Mapping

Optical biomarkers have been used extensively for intracellular imaging with high spatial and temporal resolution. Extending the modality of these probes is a key driver in cell biology. In recent years, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in nanodiamond has emerged as a promising candidate for bioimaging and biosensing with low cytotoxicity and stable photoluminescence. Here we study the electrophysiological effects of this quantum probe in primary cortical neurons. Multielectrode array recordings across five replicate studies showed no statistically significant difference in 25 network parameters when nanodiamonds are added at varying concentrations over various time periods, 12-36 h. The physiological validation motivates the second part of the study, which demonstrates how the quantum properties of these biomarkers can be used to report intracellular information beyond their location and movement. Using the optically detected magnetic resonance from the nitrogen-vacancy defects within the nanodiamonds we demonstrate enhanced signal-to-noise imaging and temperature mapping from thousands of nanodiamond probes simultaneously. This work establishes nanodiamonds as viable multifunctional intraneuronal sensors with nanoscale resolution, which may ultimately be used to detect magnetic and electrical activity at the membrane level in excitable cellular systems.

Understanding the neurovascular unit at multiple scales: Advantages and limitations of multi-photon and functional ultrasound imaging

Developing efficient brain imaging technologies by combining a high spatiotemporal resolution and a large penetration depth is a key step for better understanding the neurovascular interface that emerges as a main pathway to neurodegeneration in many pathologies such as dementia. This review focuses on the advances in two complementary techniques: multi-photon laser scanning microscopy (MPLSM) and functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi). MPLSM has become the gold standard for in vivo imaging of cellular dynamics and morphology, together with cerebral blood flow. fUSi is an innovative imaging modality based on Doppler ultrasound, capable of recording vascular brain activity over large scales (i.e., tens of cubic millimeters) at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution for such volumes (up to 10μm pixel size at 10kHz). By merging these two technologies, researchers may have access to a more detailed view of the various processes taking place at the neurovascular interface. MPLSM and fUSi are also good candidates for addressing the major challenge of real-time delivery, monitoring, and in vivo evaluation of drugs in neuronal tissue.

Imaging the pharmacology of nanomaterials by intravital microscopy: Toward understanding their biological behavior

Therapeutic nanoparticles (NPs) can deliver cytotoxic chemotherapeutics and other drugs more safely and efficiently to patients; furthermore, selective delivery to target tissues can theoretically be accomplished actively through coating NPs with molecular ligands, and passively through exploiting physiological "enhanced permeability and retention" features. However, clinical trial results have been mixed in showing improved efficacy with drug nanoencapsulation, largely due to heterogeneous NP accumulation at target sites across patients. Thus, a clear need exists to better understand why many NP strategies fail in vivo and not result in significantly improved tumor uptake or therapeutic response. Multicolor in vivo confocal fluorescence imaging (intravital microscopy; IVM) enables integrated pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) measurement at the single-cell level, and has helped answer key questions regarding the biological mechanisms of in vivo NP behavior. This review summarizes progress to date and also describes useful technical strategies for successful IVM experimentation.

Micro/Nanoscale Thermometry for Cellular Thermal Sensing

Temperature is a key parameter to regulate cell function, and biochemical reactions inside a cell in turn affect the intracellular temperature. It's vitally necessary to measure cellular temperature to provide sufficient information to fully understand life science, while the conventional methods are incompetent. Over the last decade, many ingenious thermometers have been developed with the help of nanotechnology, and real-time intracellular temperature measurement at the micro/nanoscale has been realized with high temporal-spatial resolution. With the help of these techniques, several mechanisms of thermogenesis inside cells have been investigated, even in subcellular organelles. Here, current developments in cellular thermometers are highlighted, and a picture of their applications in cell biology is presented. In particular, temperature measurement principle, thermometer design and latest achievements are also introduced. Finally, the existing opportunities and challenges in this ongoing field are discussed.

Structural evaluations and temperature dependent photoluminescence characterizations of Eu(3+)-activated SrZrO3 hollow spheres for luminescence thermometry applications

This research is focused on the temperature sensing ability of perovskite SrZrO3:Eu(3+) hollow spheres synthesized via the sol-gel method followed by heating. The Rietveld refinement indicated that the precursors annealed at 1100 °C were crystallized to form orthorhombic SrZrO3. SrZrO3 particles exhibited non-agglomerated hollow spherical morphology with an average particle size of 300 nm. The UV-excited photoluminescence spectrum of SrZrO3:Eu(3+) consisted of two regions. One region was associated with SrZrO3 trap emission, and the other one was related to the emission of Eu(3+) ions. The intensity ratio of the emission of Eu(3+) ions to the host emission (FIR) and the emission lifetime of Eu(3+) ions were measured in the temperature range of 300-550 K. The sensitivity obtained via the lifetime method was 7.3× lower than that measured via the FIR. Within the optimum temperature range of 300-460 K, the as-estimated sensor sensitivity was increased from 0.0013 to 0.028 K(-1). With a further increase in temperatures, the sensitivity started to decline. A maximum relative sensitivity was estimated to be 2.22%K(-1) at 460 K. The resolutions in both methods were below 1K in the above temperature range. The results indicated the suitability of SrZrO3:Eu(3+) for the distinct high temperature sensing applications.

A dye encapsulated terbium-based metal–organic framework for ratiometric temperature sensing

A ratiometric and colorimetric thermometer with high sensitivity and significant color change from 50 to 300 K has been developed by encapsulating the luminescent dye 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin (C460) into the channels of a terbium-based MOFTbTATAB.
