A dual encapsulation strategy to generate anion-responsive luminescent lanthanide hydrogels

We report a new method to generate ion-responsive luminescent hydrogels, involving encapsulation of a luminescent lanthanide probe within crosslinked amphiphilic polymer particles and subsequent entrapment within a hydrogel. The resulting hydrogels are capable of reversible bicarbonate sensing, exhibit no leaching, and can be tuned for a range of sensing applications.

Fluorescent chameleon labels for bioconjugation and imaging of proteins, nucleic acids, biogenic amines and surface amino groups. a review

Chameleon labels (ChLs) possess the unique property of changing (visible) color and fluorescence on binding to amino groups of biomolecules. MostChLs react with primary aliphatic amino groups such as those in lysine or with amino groups artificially introduced into polynucleic acids or saccharides, but someothers also react with secondary amino groups. Under controlled circumstances, the reactions are fairly specific. The review is subdivided into the following sections: (1) An introduction and classification of fluorescent labels; (2) pyrylium labels that undergo shortwave color changes upon labelling, typically from blue to red; (3) polymethine type of labels (that also undergo shortwave color changes, typically from green to blue; (4) various other (less common) chromogenic and fluorogenic systems; (5) hemicyanine labels that undergolongwavecolor changes, typically from yellow to purple; (6) the application of ChLs to labeling of proteins and oligonucleotides; (7) applications to fluorometric assays and sensing; (8) applications to fluorescence imaging of biomolecules; (9) applications in studies on affinity interactions (receptor-ligand binding); (10) applications in surface and interface chemistry; and (11) applications in chromatography, electrophoresis and isotachophoresis of biomolecules.

A reaction-based sensing scheme for volatile organic amine reagents with the chromophoric-fluorogenic dual mode

In this study, we present the classical Michael's addition reaction-based sensing scheme for volatile organic amine reagents such as ethylenediamine, N, N-dimethylethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine using a near-infrared fluorescent dye TCF1. Obvious spectral changes in the UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of TCF1 were observed upon addition of these amine reagents with an effective catalyst DBU, resulting in significant and fast color changes detectable by the naked-eye. TCF1 showed an efficient response to these amine reagents with a low detection limit, especially for diethylenetriamine. NMR and MS spectral analysis proved that the mechanism of the detection was based on the classical Michael addition, which was also verified by the theoretical calculations. In addition, a portable test paper incorporated with TCF1 had also successfully realized the detection of a low concentration of these amine reagents.

Detection of organic amines using a ratiometric chromophoric fluorescent probe with a significant emission shift

Taking advantages of both the well-known α,β-unsaturated structure and the special nucleophilicity of organic amines toward its acceptor moieties, intramolecular charge transfer as a signaling mechanism is used to design and synthesize a new ratiometric chromophoric fluorescent probe (BI-CA-ID) with large emission shifts toward organic amines. This probe is employed for the detection of organic amines with high selectivity and sensitivity and a “naked-eye” color change (from red to colorless). Ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence spectrometric measurements are used to determine detection limits as low as 0.024 and 0.43 μM. Furthermore, nucleophilic addition of the amine on the α,β-unsaturated of BI-CA-ID indicated that the sensing mechanism occurs via interruption of the π-conjugation.

Inkjet-Printed Colorimetric Paper-Based Gas Sensor Arrays for the Discrimination of Volatile Primary Amines with Amine-Responsive Dye-Encapsulating Polymer Nanoparticles

Arrays of gas sensors are of high interest for "electronic nose" applications. Here, we describe the fabrication of a colorimetric single-use gas sensor array made of paper allowing the discrimination of volatile primary amines based on their polarity. For this purpose, polymeric nanoparticles with different polarities containing an amine-sensitive chromogenic dye are deposited onto paper substrates by means of inkjet printing. Data processing is conducted by red-green-blue (RGB) color extraction, followed by principal component analysis (PCA) or agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) analysis. The application to the discrimination of two cheese samples is demonstrated.

Molecular Organization Induced Anisotropic Properties of Perylene - Silica Hybrid Nanoparticles

Optically active silica nanoparticles are interesting owing to high stability and easy accessibility. Unlike previous reports on dye loaded silica particles, here we address an important question on how optical properties are dependent on the aggregation-induced segregation of perylene molecules inside and outside the silica nanoparticles. Three differentially functionalized fluorescent perylene - silica hybrid nanoparticles are prepared from appropriate ratios of perylene derivatives and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and investigated the structure property correlation (P-ST, P-NP and P-SF). The particles differ from each other on the distribution, organization and intermolecular interaction of perylene inside or outside the silica matrix. Structure and morphology of all hybrid nanoparticles were characterized using a range of techniques such as electron microscope, optical spectroscopic measurements and thermal analysis. The organizations of perylene in three different silica nanoparticles were explored using steady-state fluorescence, fluorescence anisotropy, lifetime measurements and solid state polarized spectroscopic studies. The interactions and changes in optical properties of the silica nanoparticles in presence of different amines were tested and quantified both in solution and in vapor phase using fluorescence quenching studies. The synthesized materials can be regenerated after washing with water and reused for sensing of amines.

Inorganic/polymer hybrid nanoparticles for sensing applications

This paper reviews a wide set of sensing applications based on the special properties associated with inorganic/polymer composite nanoparticles. We first describe optical sensing applications performed with hybrid nanoparticles and hybrid microgels with special emphasis on photoluminescence detection and imaging. Analyte detection with molecularly imprinted polymers and HPLC-based sensing using hybrid nanoparticles as stationary phase is also summarized. The final part is devoted to the study of ultra-sensitive molecule detection by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy using core-shell hybrid materials composed of noble metal nanoparticles and cross-linked polymers.

An inorganic-organic hybrid optical sensor for heavy metal ion detection based on immobilizing 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol on functionalized HMS

A novel and low-cost optical sensor for heavy metal ion detection has been prepared by immobilizing 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) on the functionalized hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) via N-trimethoxysilylpropyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (TMAC). The successful fabrication of this optical sensor is confirmed by extensive characterizations using FT-IR, low angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy and N(2) sorption, meanwhile its colorimetric properties, selectivity, sensitivity and reversibility are also investigated. The optical sensor responds selectively to heavy metal ions, such as Fe(3+), Cd(2+), Ni(2+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Co(2+), Hg(2+) and Cu(2+) with a color change from yellow to orange or purple in alkaline solutions, while it shows a color change only for Cu(2+) under strongly acidic conditions. At pH 12.0, this optical sensor has a high sensitivity that makes it possible to detect Cu(2+) in aqueous solution with the detection limit as low as 40ppb by naked-eye. This optical sensor also shows excellent reversibility and regeneration by treatment with a solution of EDTA.

Nanostructured Substrates for Optical Sensing

Sensors that change color have the advantages of versatility, ease of use, high sensitivity, and low cost. The recent development of optically based chemical sensing platforms has increasingly employed substrates manufactured with advanced processing or fabrication techniques to provide precise control over shape and morphology of the sensor micro- and nano-structure. New sensors have resulted with improved capabilities for a number of sensing applications, including the detection of biomolecules and environmental monitoring. This perspective focuses on recent optical sensor devices that utilize nanostructured substrates.

Multi-channel receptors based on thiopyrylium functionalised with macrocyclic receptors for the recognition of transition metal cations and anions

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1-L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1-L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575-585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1-L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied. A selective hypsochromic shift of the blue band was found for the systems L4-Pb2+ and L5-Hg2+. Additionally, L1-L6 are poorly fluorescent but coordination with certain metal cations induces an enhancement of the fluorescence at ca 500 nm. For instance, the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+ induced a remarkable 42-fold and 45-fold enhancement in the emission intensity of L1 centred at 500 nm, respectively. Also remarkable was the 18-fold enhancement observed for L4 and L5 in the presence of Fe3+ and Cu2+, respectively. The electrochemical behaviour of receptors L1-L6 was studied in acetonitrile using platinum as a working electrode and [Bu4N][BF4] as a supporting electrolyte. This family of receptors showed a one-electron reversible redox process at ca. -0.46 V versus sce attributed to the reduction of the thiopyrylium group. A moderate anodic shift in the presence of certain metal cations was observed. The effect in the UV-visible spectra of acetonitrile solutions of receptor L1-L6 in the presence of anions was also studied. A remarkable bleaching was found in the presence of cyanide.

Mesoporous hybrid materials containing nanoscopic "binding pockets" for colorimetric anion signaling in water by using displacement assays

Mesoporous solids functionalized with anion-binding groups have proved to be suitable anion hosts and have been used in selective colorimetric displacement assays. The material UVM-7, a mesoporous MCM41-type support characterized by the presence of nanometric mesoporous particle conglomerates, was selected as inorganic scaffolding. Reaction of the template-free UVM-7 solid with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (1) yielded solid S1, from which the derivatives S2 and S3 were obtained by reaction with 2-methylthio-2-imidazoline hydroiodide (2) and butyl isocyanate (3), respectively. Solids S4 and S5 were prepared by reaction of the starting mesoporous UVM-7 scaffolding with N-methyl-N'-propyltrimethoxysilyl imidazolium chloride (4) and with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (5), respectively. The solids synthesized contain mesoporous binding pockets that can interact with anions through electrostatic attractive forces (S1, S2, S4, S5) and hydrogen-bonding interactions (S1, S2, S3, S4). These functionalized solids were loaded with a dye (d) capable of interacting coordinatively with the anchored binding sites, in our case 5-carboxyfluorescein, to yield the hybrid materials S1d, S2d, S3d, S4d and S5d. These dye-containing solids are the signaling reporters. Their sensing ability towards a family of carboxylates, namely acetate, citrate, lactate, succinate, oxalate, tartrate, malate, mandelate, glutamate and certain nucleotides, has been studied in pure water at pH 7.5 (Hepes, 0.01 mol dm(-3)). In the sensing protocol, a particular analyte may be bonded preferentially by the nanoscopic functionalized pocket, leading to delivery of the dye to the solution and resulting in colorimetric detection of the guest. The response to a given anion depends on the characteristics of the binding pockets and the specific interaction of the anion with the binding groups in the mesopores. We believe that the possibility of using a wide variety of mesoporous supports that can easily be functionalized with anion-binding sites, combined with suitable dyes as indicators, make this approach significant for opening new perspectives in the design of chromogenic assays for anion detection in pure water.

Recent advances in nanostructured chemosensors and biosensors

Over the past few decades the fabrication of nanoscale materials for use in chemical sensing, biomedical and biological analyses has proven a promising avenue. Nanomaterials show promise in such chemical and biological analysis mainly due to their highly tunable size- and shape-dependent chemical and physical properties. Furthermore, they exhibit unique surface chemistry, thermal stability, high surface area and large pore volume per unit mass that can be exploited for sensor fabrication. This review will discuss the chemical and physical properties of nanomaterials necessary for use as chemosensors and biosensors. It will also highlight some noteworthy recent avenues using nanoscale materials as scaffolds for chemosensing and biosensing. Nanomaterials that have proven to be useful for the fabrication of sensors, as reviewed herein, have compositions including metals, metal oxides, chalcogenides and polymers. Their structures range from nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanowires to nanoporous and core-shells. Examples of the different types of structures and compositions as well as sensors and biosensors fabricated from them will be described. Some nanomaterials are functionalized with various kinds of ligands and bioactive groups to produce sensitive and selective sensors for specific analytes. The combination of two or more types of nanostructures with core-shell type nanoassemblies and other composite structures, in addition to advantageous features enhancing sensitivity and response time of related sensors, are also discussed.
