Fe7S8 coupled with VS4 heterogeneous interface engineering driven by FeV bimetallic MOFs: An efficient all-pH and durable hydrogen evolution

Rational design and preparation of a multiphase electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has become a hot research topic, while applicable and pH versatility of vanadium tetrasulfide (VS4) and heptairon octasulfide (Fe7S8) composites have rarely been reported. Here, the facile topological sulfide self-template sacrifice method using FeV bimetallic MOFs is designed to obtain Fe7S8 coupled with VS4 heterostructures, enhancing the electron precipitation in the catalysts and attracts electrons to migrate. According to DFT simulations, the electronic coupling at the atomic orbital level and the modulation of interfacial electrons among various interfaces play a crucial role in enhancing the intermediate state process of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) across the entire pH range, promoting the optimal d-band centroid value (εd). Reassuringly, the prepared 3D Fe7S8/VS4 electrodes possessed excellent performances of η10 = 53 mV, η10 = 135 mV and η10 = 38 mV in a conventional three-electrode configuration in a 1 M KOH, 1 M Na2SO4, and 0.5 M H2SO4, and the stabilized currents can all be maintained for 48 h. This innovative design of in situ heterostructured materials constructed from dual transition metal sulfides provides inspiring ideas for the preparation of all-pH catalysts.

Dual-Track Multifunctional Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks for Antibiotic Enrichment and Detection

The improper use and overuse of antibiotics have led to significant burdens and detrimental effects on the environment, food supply, and human health. Herein, a magnetic solid-phase extraction program and an optical immunosensor based on bimetallic Ce/Zr-UiO 66 for the detection of antibiotics are developed. A magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Ce/Zr-UiO 66 metal-organic framework (MOF) is prepared to extract and enrich chloramphenicol from fish, wastewater, and urine samples, and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-Ce/Zr-UiO 66@bovine serum protein-chloramphenicol probe is used for the sensitive detection of chloramphenicol based on the dual-effect catalysis of Ce and HRP. In this manner, the application of Ce/Zr-UiO 66 in integrating sample pretreatment and antibiotic detection is systematically investigated and the associated mechanisms are explored. It is concluded that Ce/Zr-UiO 66 is a versatile dual-track material exhibiting high enrichment efficiency (6.37 mg g-1) and high sensitivity (limit of detection of 51.3 pg mL-1) for chloramphenicol detection and serving as a multifunctional MOF for safeguarding public health and hygiene.

Magnetic separation-enhanced photoluminescence detection of dipicolinic acid and quenching detection of Cu(II) ions

Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is a chelate capable of binding to a variety of lanthanide ions to make them luminescent in the visible range. Based on this property and also assisted by magnetic separation, we report a strategy for the sensitive detection of DPA. Poly(acrylic acid)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) serve as a magnetic carrier to deliver only a necessary amount of Tb3+ ions to DPA in a sample solution. This enables photoluminescence measurement of the Tb3+-DPA complex with minimal background noise. The obtained detection limit, which is as low as 0.236 nM, is more than two orders of magnitude lower than that of the assay not assisted by magnetic separation. Not only does this method possess a potential for diagnosing anthrax, given that DPA is a major constituent of Bacillus anthracis spores, but it is also useful for detecting aqueous Cu2+ ions through the luminescence quenching effect. High sensitivity with a detection limit of 54 nM [Cu2+] is demonstrated using the Eu3+-DPA complex.

Iron oxide magnetic aggregates: Aspects of synthesis, computational approaches and applications

Superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles have been central to numerous investigations in the past few decades for their use in many applications, such as drug delivery, medical diagnostics, magnetic separation, and material science. However, the properties of single magnetic nanoparticles are sometimes not sufficient to accomplish tasks where a strong magnetic response is required. In light of this, aggregated magnetite nanoparticles have been proposed as an alternative advanced material, which may expand and combine some of the advantages of single magnetic nanoparticles, including superparamagnetism, with an enhanced magnetic moment and increased colloidal stability. This review comprehensively discusses the current literature on aggregates made of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. This review is divided into three sections. First, the current synthetic strategies for magnetite nanoparticle aggregates are discussed, together with the influence of different stabilizers on the primary crystals and the final aggregate size and morphology. The second section is dedicated to computational approaches, such as density functional methods (which permit accurate predictions of electronic and magnetic properties and shed light on the behavior of surfactant molecules on iron oxide surfaces) and molecular dynamics simulations (which provide additional insight into the influence of ligands on the surface chemistry of iron oxide nanocrystals). The last section discusses current and possible future applications of iron oxide magnetic aggregates, including wastewater treatment, water purification, medical applications, and magnetic aggregates for materials displaying structural colors.

Application of Biobased Substances in the Synthesis of Nanostructured Magnetic Core-Shell Materials

We propose here a novel green synthesis route of core-shell magnetic nanomaterials based on the polyol method, which uses bio-based substances (BBS) derived from biowaste, as stabilizer and directing agent. First, we studied the effect of BBS concentration on the size, morphology, and composition of magnetic iron oxides nanoparticles obtained in the presence of BBS via the polyol synthesis method (MBBS). Then, as a proof of concept, we further coated MBBS with mesoporous silica (MBBS@mSiO2) or titanium dioxide (MBBS@TiO2) to obtain magnetic nanostructured core-shell materials. All the materials were deeply characterized with diverse physicochemical techniques. Results showed that both the size of the nanocrystals and their aggregation strongly depend on the BBS concentration used in the synthesis: the higher the concentration of BBS, the smaller the sizes of the iron oxide nanoparticles. On the other hand, the as-prepared magnetic core-shell nanomaterials were applied with good performance in different systems. In particular, MBBS@SiO2 showed to be an excellent nanocarrier of ibuprofen and successful adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. MBBS@TiO2 was capable of degrading MB with the same efficiency of pristine TiO2. These excellent results encourage the use of bio-based substances in different types of synthesis methods since they could reduce the fabrication costs and the environmental impact.

Simultaneous determination of BoNT/A and /E using an electrochemical sandwich immunoassay based on the nanomagnetic immunosensing platform

Developing new ultrasensitive assays for the detection of the presence, and determination of the serotype of the most poisonous material known i.e. botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) is vital to human health and the wellbeing of the surrounding environment. Here, an electrochemical sandwich immunoassay with high sensitivity is adopted to achieve simultaneous determination of BoNT serotypes A and E based on polystyrene@polydopamine/Cd²⁺ and Ag nanoparticles acting as monoclonal antibody labels. Two well-separated peaks with strong electrochemical signals are generated by the labels, allowing for the simultaneous detection of two analytes existing on the electrode. To obtain well-oriented polyclonal antibodies immobilization, boronic acid is directly attached to the magnetic core/metal-organic framework (MOF) shell nanoagent surfaces without the requirement of a long and flexible spacer. Accordingly, it is possible to directly detect the metal ion labels through square wave voltammetry without the metal pre-concentration step. This results in distinct and well-defined voltammetric peaks, pertaining to each sandwich-type immunocomplexes. The limits of detection of BoNT/A and BoNT/E analyses were found to be 0.04 and 0.16 pg mL^-1 with the linear dynamic ranges of 0.1-1000 and 0.5-1000 pg mL^-1, respectively. Based on the obtained results, this immunosensor has the wide linear ranges, while also exhibiting low limits of detection along with good stability and reproducibility.

A novel lateral flow immunoassay strip based on a label-free magnetic Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposite for rapid detection of Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is one of the most lethal pathogenic bacteria. Although the traditional microbial culture method has high sensitivity and selectivity for the diagnosis of L. monocytogenes, it is time-consuming and not suitable for on-site detection. A rapid, convenient and visualized on-site detection method is particularly needed. In this work, Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ was prepared for both magnetic separation and lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for the detection of L. monocytogenes by taking advantage of the easy separation of the magnetic core Fe₃O₄ and the high surface area of the outer layer UiO-66-NH₂. Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ with a high surface area and good water-dispersibility and optical properties was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. It could directly adsorb on the surface of target bacteria and form Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-bacteria conjugates, without the labeling of an antibody. After magnetic separation and concentration, the Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-bacteria conjugates were detected by the antibody on the test line of the LFIA strip, resulting in a visible orange band. The capture efficiency and LFIA detection of Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂ were optimized in this study. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear correlation between the test line intensity and the concentration of L. monocytogenes was obtained in the range of 10⁵-10⁸ CFU mL^-1, and the limit of detection was 2.2 × 10⁶ CFU mL^-1 by the naked eye. The Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-based LFIA strip showed strong specificity for L. monocytogenes, and the detection took 45 min without culture enrichment. Therefore, the proposed Fe₃O₄@UiO-66-NH₂-based strip showed the advantages of simple synthesis, being label-free, low cost, good selectivity and convenience.

Magnetic-controlled dandelion-like nanocatalytic swarm for targeted biofilm elimination

Infections caused by drug-resistant strains pose a serious threat to human health. Most bacterial infections are related to biofilms. The generation of a bacterial biofilm greatly reduces the antibacterial efficiency of antibiotics and some traditional antibacterial drugs, and it is very important to develop antibacterial drugs to replace antibiotics. Here, encouraged by the promising magnetic control technology of micro/nanorobots, the synergistic antibacterial strategy of a dandelion-like magnetically-controlled multifunctional hierarchical magnetic biomimetic nanozyme, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@dendritic mesoporous silica@small-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (FSDMSsF NPs), was developed to be effective against bacterial biofilms. FSDMSsF NPs showed great magnetic properties and peroxidase-like activities, and could act as catalytic carriers for the production of hydroxyl radicals that are highly toxic to bacteria in a low-concentration H₂O₂ environment, killing planktonic bacteria. The antibacterial rate of FSDMSsF NPs reached 99.5% at a concentration of 200 μg mL^-1. The synergistic antibacterial mechanisms of the mechanical factor and the chemical factor are further discussed. Under time-varying magnetic swarm control, the antibacterial performance of FSDMSsF NPs against bacteria was significantly improved. On this basis, the elimination effect of FSDMSsF NPs on bacterial biofilms is further discussed. The results showed that FSDMSsF NPs could target and eliminate biofilms through complex channels under the control of magnetic fields. In addition, the system could remove biofilms in occlusions by changing the morphology and movement mode of an FSDMSsF NP swarm under magnetic field control. The current work proposes a facile and physical-chemical synergistic strategy for effective antibacterial therapy. FSDMSsF NPs could effectively kill planktonic bacteria and remove stubborn biofilms through magnetic field guidance, achieving thorough antibacterial efficacy, which has great potential in the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Mapping out the Aqueous Surface Chemistry of Metal Oxide Nanocrystals: Carboxylate, Phosphonate, and Catecholate Ligands

Iron oxide and hafnium oxide nanocrystals are two of the few successful examples of inorganic nanocrystals used in a clinical setting. Although crucial to their application, their aqueous surface chemistry is not fully understood. The literature contains conflicting reports regarding the optimum binding group. To alleviate these inconsistencies, we set out to systematically investigate the interaction of carboxylic acids, phosphonic acids, and catechols to metal oxide nanocrystals in polar media. Using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering, we map out the pH-dependent binding affinity of the ligands toward hafnium oxide nanocrystals (an NMR-compatible model system). Carboxylic acids easily desorb in water from the surface and only provide limited colloidal stability from pH 2 to pH 6. Phosphonic acids, on the other hand, provide colloidal stability over a broader pH range but also feature a pH-dependent desorption from the surface. They are most suited for acidic to neutral environments (pH <8). Finally, nitrocatechol derivatives provide a tightly bound ligand shell and colloidal stability at physiological and basic pH (6-10). Whereas dynamically bound ligands (carboxylates and phosphonates) do not provide colloidal stability in phosphate-buffered saline, the tightly bound nitrocatechols provide long-term stability. We thus shed light on the complex ligand binding dynamics on metal oxide nanocrystals in aqueous environments. Finally, we provide a practical colloidal stability map, guiding researchers to rationally design ligands for their desired application.

Superparamagnetic Fe3O4@CA Nanoparticles and Their Potential as Draw Solution Agents in Forward Osmosis

In this study, citric acid (CA)-coated magnetite Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@CA MNPs) for use as draw solution (DS) agents in forward osmosis (FO) were synthesized by co-precipitation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and magnetic measurements. Prepared 3.7% w/w colloidal solutions of Fe₃O₄@CA MNPs exhibited an osmotic pressure of 18.7 bar after purification without aggregation and a sufficient magnetization of 44 emu/g to allow DS regeneration by an external magnetic field. Fe₃O₄@CA suspensions were used as DS in FO cross-flow filtration with deionized (DI) water as FS and with the active layer of the FO membrane facing the FS and NaCl as a reference DS. The same transmembrane bulk osmotic pressure resulted in different water fluxes for NaCl and MNPs, respectively. Thus the initial water flux with Fe₃O₄@CA was 9.2 LMH whereas for 0.45 M NaCl as DS it was 14.1 LMH. The reverse solute flux was 0.08 GMH for Fe₃O₄@CA and 2.5 GMH for NaCl. These differences are ascribed to a more pronounced internal dilutive concentration polarization with Fe₃O₄@CA as DS compared to NaCl as DS. This research demonstrated that the proposed Fe₃O₄@CA can be used as a potential low reverse solute flux DS for FO processes.

A reciprocating magnetic field assisted on-line solid-phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry determination of trace tetracyclines in water

A reciprocating magnetic-field-assisted on-line solid-phase extraction (RMF-SPE) method coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been developed for continuous enrichment of trace chemicals in water samples. Under the assist of the reciprocating magnetic field, carboxyl-modified magnetic nanoparticles (CMNPs) were applied to prepare microcolumn with even dispersion by periodical motion, instead of traditional compaction as extraction sorbents. When water sample passed through the extraction region, dynamic sorbents generates an advantage of countless contacts between sorbents and targets without blocking for high efficient extraction. In this study, the on-line RMF-SPE method was established and evaluated by determination of tetracyclines (TCs) from water samples as analysis models, including oxytetracycline, tetracycline, demeclocycline, metacycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline. Experimental conditions have been investigated such as flow rate, reciprocating speed, elution time, and so on. The method showed high relative recovery (95.4-111.1%) and good repeatability with RSD from 2.9 to 11.8% for the 200 mL water sample. The linearity range, limits of detection (LODs), and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.5-200 μg L^-1 (chlortetracycline) and 0.1-200 μg L^-1 (other TCs), 12.0-74.1 ng L^-1, and 40.1-247 ng L^-1, respectively. More importantly, the high enrichment factors in a range of 204 (chlortetracycline) to 276 (demeclocycline) indicate that a small amount of dynamic sorbents (only 10 mg) give full play to extraction attributing to the reciprocating movement, especially for trace analysis and continuous extraction, which is significant for water samples from sea, river and domestic waste.

Microstructural Design of Necklace-Like Fe3O4/Multiwall Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) Composites with Enhanced Microwave Absorption Performance

In order to manufacture microwave absorbers with strong attenuation abilities and that are light weight, in this paper, ferromagnetic carbon matrix composites were prepared by the composite of carbon nanotubes with adjustable dielectric constant and Fe₃O₄. Fe₃O₄/MWCNT composites with well-designed necklace-like structure and controllable size in the range of 100–400 nm have been successfully achieved by a simple solvent thermal method. A series of samples were prepared by changing experimental parameters. The microwave absorption characteristics of these samples were studied from the dielectric constant and magnetic permeability in two aspects. The electromagnetic absorption properties of the composites show obvious differences with different microsphere sizes, different microsphere density and different proportion of additives. When the solvothermal time is 15 h and the microsphere size is 400 nm, the reflection loss reaches −38 dB. The interfacial polarization caused by the unique structural design and good impedance matching produce composites that possess excellent electromagnetic loss ability.

3D Magnetic Field-Controlled Synthesis, Collective Motion, and Bioreaction Enhancement of Multifunctional Peasecod-like Nanochains

Magnetic field-induced synthesis and biocatalysis of magnetic materials have inspired great interest due to the flexible controllability of morphologies and unique magnetoelectrical properties. However, the interaction of the magnetic field and the reaction kinetics during the synthesis of magnetic nanochains has not been revealed. The collective motions in fluids and the multifunctional enhancements for bioreaction of 3D magnetic-controlled nanochains have not been systematically researched. Here, an integrated 3D magnetic control method was reported for the synthesis, collective motion, and multifunctional bioreaction enhancement of peasecod-like nanochains. The interactions of magnetic field and reaction kinetics were rationally controlled to synthesize magnetic nanochains of different morphologies. Collective motions of nanochains under alternating magnetic fields were studied to provide insights into the disturbance on confined fluids. Three mechanisms of reaction enhancement of nanostir, magnetic agent, and nanocatalyst were achieved simultaneously via 3D magnetic-controlled nanochains using a glucose oxidase-horseradish peroxidase multi-enzyme system. The peasecod-like nanochain also exhibited excellent reaction enhancement in cell-free protein synthesis reaction, which is desired for effective high-throughput screening. The integrated 3D magnetic control method through the whole process from fabrication to applications of magnetic nanomaterials could be extended to multifunctional biocatalysis and multi-task biomedicine.

Biosynthesis of magnetite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles using extracts of "hairy" roots: preparation, characterization, estimation for environmental remediation and biological application

The “green” synthesis of magnetite and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄-NPs and CoFe₂O₄-NPs) using extracts of Artemisia annua L “hairy” roots was proposed. In particular, the effect and role of important variables in the ‘green’ synthesis process, including the metal–salt ratio, various counter ions in the reaction mixture, concentration of total flavonoids and reducing power of the extract, were evaluated. The morphology and size distribution of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) depended on the metal oxidation state and ratio of Fe(iii) : Fe(ii) in the initial reaction mixture. MNPs obtained from divalent metal salts in the reaction mixture were non-uniform in size with high aggregation level. Samples obtained by the FeCl₃/FeSO₄ mixture with a ratio of Fe(iii) : Fe(ii) = 1 : 2 showed an irregular shape of the nanoparticles and high aggregation level. MNPs obtained by the FeCl₃/FeSO₄/CoCl₂ mixture showed a regular shape with slight aggregation, and were in the nanosize range (10–17 nm). Thus, this mixture as a metal-precursor was used for MNP biosynthesis in the subsequent experiments. The XRD data showed that the magnetic specimens contained mainly spinel type phase. The data of EDX and XPS analysis indicated that the product of the “green” synthesis was magnetite with some impurities, owing to the obtained ratio of Fe : O being similar to the theoretical atomic ratio of magnetite (3 : 4). The Fe₃O₄-NP samples were superparamagnetic with high magnetization (until 68 emu g⁻¹). The Co-containing MNPs demonstrated low ferromagnetic properties. The MNPs with pure magnetite phase, very good magnetization and uniform size distribution (ca. 12–14 nm) were prepared by the “hairy” root extract characterized by the highest amount of total flavonoids. According to the FTIR data, the synthesized Fe₃O₄-NPs had a core–shell like structure, in which the core was composed of Fe₃O₄, and the shell was formed by bioactive molecules. The presence of several organic compounds (such as flavonoids or carboxylic acids) plays a key role in the suppression of Fe₃O₄-NP aggregation without addition of a stabilizing agents. Synthesized Fe₃O₄-NP samples effectively removed Cu(ii) and Cd(ii) with the maximum adsorption capacity, reaching 29.9 mg g⁻¹ and 33.5 mg g⁻¹, respectively. It is probable that the presence of organic components in extracts plays an important role in the adsorption properties of biosynthesised MNPs. The obtained MNPs were successfully applied to the removal of heavy metal ions in the environmental water samples. Fe₃O₄-NPs also negatively affected plant growth in the case of using “hairy” roots as a test model, and the greatest inhibitory activity (99.56 wt%) was possessed by MNPs with high magnetic properties.

Robust synthesis of highly charged superparamagnetic Fe3O4 colloidal nanocrystal clusters for magnetically responsive photonic crystals

Herein, highly charged superparamagnetic Fe3O4 colloidal nanocrystal clusters with uniform and widely tunable sizes have been synthesized by a robust and easily scalable solvothermal method for magnetically responsive photonic crystals.

Libraries of Uniform Magnetic Multicore Nanoparticles with Tunable Dimensions for Biomedical and Photonic Applications

Multicore iron oxide nanoparticles, also known as colloidal nanocrystal clusters, are magnetic materials with diverse applications in biomedicine and photonics. Here, we examine how both of their characteristic dimensional features, the primary particle and sub-micron colloid diameters, influence their magnetic properties and performance in two different applications. The characterization of these basic size-dependent properties is enabled by a synthetic strategy that provides independent control over both the primary nanocrystal and cluster dimensions. Over a wide range of conditions, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that the oriented attachment of smaller nanocrystals results in their crystallographic alignment throughout the entire superstructure. We apply a sulfonated polymer with high charge density to prevent cluster aggregation and conjugate molecular dyes to particle surfaces so as to visualize their collection using handheld magnets. These libraries of colloidal clusters, indexed both by primary nanocrystal dimension (d_p) and overall cluster diameter (D_c), form magnetic photonic crystals with relatively weak size-dependent properties. In contrast, their performance as MRI T₂ contrast agents is highly sensitive to cluster diameter, not primary particle size, and is optimized for materials of 50 nm diameter (r₂ = 364 mM^-1 s^-1). These results exemplify the relevance of dimensional control in developing applications for these versatile materials.

Antibody-directed metal-organic framework nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery

Nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nMOFs) have shown great promise as high-capacity carriers for a variety of applications. For biomedicine, numerous nMOFs have been proposed that can transport virtually any molecular drug, can finely tune their payload release profile, etc. However, perspectives of their applications for the targeted drug delivery remain relatively unclear. So far, only a few works have reported specific cell targeting by nMOFs exclusively through small ligands such as folic acid or RGD peptides. Here we show feasibility of targeted drug delivery to specific cancer cells in vitro with nMOFs functionalized with such universal tool as an antibody. We demonstrate ca. 120 nm magnetic core/MOFs shell nanoagents loaded with doxorubicin/daunorubicin and coupled with an antibody though a hydrophilic carbohydrate interface. We show that carboxymethyl-dextran coating of nMOFs allows extensive loading of the drug molecules (up to 15.7 mg/g), offers their sustained release in physiological media and preserves antibody specificity. Reliable performance of the agents is illustrated with trastuzumab-guided selective targeting and killing of HER2/neu-positive breast cancer cells in vitro. The approach expands the scope of nMOF applications and can serve as a platform for the development of potent theranostic nanoagents. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The unique combination of exceptional drug capacity and controlled release, biodegradability and low toxicity makes nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nMOFs) nearly ideal drug vehicles for various biomedical applications. Unfortunately, the prospective of nMOF applications for the targeted drug delivery is still unclear since only a few examples have been reported for nMOF cell targeting, exclusively for small ligands. In this work, we fill the important gap and demonstrate nanoagent that can specifically kill target cancer cells via drug delivery based on recognition of HER2/neu cell surface receptors by such universal and specific tool as antibodies. The proposed approach is universal and can be adapted for specific biomedical tasks using antibodies of any specificity and nMOFs of a various composition.

Functionalized Carbon Materials for Electronic Devices: A Review

Carbon-based materials, including graphene, single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), are very promising materials for developing future-generation electronic devices. Their efficient physical, chemical, and electrical properties, such as high conductivity, efficient thermal and electrochemical stability, and high specific surface area, enable them to fulfill the requirements of modern electronic industries. In this review article, we discuss the synthetic methods of different functionalized carbon materials based on graphene oxide (GO), SWCNTs, MWCNTs, carbon fibers (CFs), and activated carbon (AC). Furthermore, we highlight the recent developments and applications of functionalized carbon materials in energy storage devices (supercapacitors), inkjet printing appliances, self-powered automatic sensing devices (biosensors, gas sensors, pressure sensors), and stretchable/flexible wearable electronic devices.

Large-scale preparation of size-controlled Fe3O4@SiO2 particles for electrophoretic display with non-iridescent structural colors

Monodisperse colloidal particles have promising applications in electrophoretic displays with vivid colors, reversibility and low switching times. In this study, a facile, effective and large-scale strategy for preparing size-controlled Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles is reported. Multiple Fe₃O₄ particles were synthesized by a modified solvothermal method using sodium citrate as a surface modifier with a binary solvent, and were then coated with a SiO₂ layer to obtain a highly negatively charged surface via a modified Stöber method. Owing to the easily controlled sizes and sufficient surface charges, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles can be assembled into colloidal amorphous arrays with the balance of electrostatic repulsion and electrophoretic forces. The reflections cover wavelengths ranging from 802 to 453 nm, and were optimized by investigating the dependence of the particles on variables such as particle size, particle volume fraction, and electric field intensity. The large-scale preparation of electrically responsive Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles facilitates an electrophoretic display with broad-range colors, showing the practical potential in industrial application.

Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ particles were prepared on the gram-scale by selecting Na₃Cit as the modifier with binary solvent and were assembled into colloidal amorphous arrays with unique and attractive optical properties for EPD.

Self-Assembled and One-Step Synthesis of Interconnected 3D Network of Fe3O4/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Hybrid for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode

In the present work, we have synthesized three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGO NSs) containing iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) hybrids (3D Fe₃O₄/rGO) by one-pot microwave approach. Structural and morphological studies reveal that the as-synthesized Fe₃O₄/rGO hybrids were composed of faceted Fe₃O₄ NPs induced into the interconnected network of rGO NSs. The morphologies and structures of the 3D hybrids have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The electrochemical studies were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which demonstrate superior electrochemical performance as supercapacitors electrode application. The specific capacitances of 3D hybrid materials was 455 F g^-1 at the scan rate of 8 mV s^-1, which is superior to that of bare Fe₃O₄ NPs. Additionally, the 3D hybrid shows good cycling stability with a retention ratio of 91.4 after starting from ∼190 cycles up to 9600 cycles. These attractive results suggest that this 3D Fe₃O₄/rGO hybrid shows better performance as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Synthesis engineering of iron oxide raspberry-shaped nanostructures

Magnetic porous nanostructures consisting of oriented aggregates of iron oxide nanocrystals display very interesting properties such as a lower oxidation state of magnetite, and enhanced saturation magnetization in comparison with individual nanoparticles of similar sizes and porosity. However, the formation mechanism of these promising nanostructures is not well understood, which hampers the fine tuning of their magnetic properties, for instance by doping them with other elements. Therefore the formation mechanism of porous raspberry shaped nanostructures (RSNs) synthesized by a one-pot polyol solvothermal method has been investigated in detail from the early stages by using a wide panel of characterization techniques, and especially by performing original in situ HR-TEM studies in temperature. A time-resolved study showed the intermediate formation of an amorphous iron alkoxide phase with a plate-like lamellar structure (PLS). Then, the fine investigation of PLS transformation upon heating up to 500 °C confirmed that the synthesis of RSNs involves two iron precursors: the starting one (hydrated iron chlorides) and the in situ formed iron alkoxide precursor which decomposes with time and heating and contributes to the growth step of nanostructures. Such an understanding of the formation mechanism of RSNs is necessary to envision efficient and rational enhancement of their magnetic properties.

Rattle-type magnetic mesoporous hollow carbon as a high-performance and reusable adsorbent for water treatment

Rattle-type magnetic mesoporous hollow carbon (RMMHC) materials have shown great promise as adsorbents for water treatment. In this work, we report a surfactant-free synthesis of RMMHC nanoparticles (NPs) using magnetite NPs as the core, tetrapropyl orthosilicate, resorcinol and formaldehyde to form the shell followed by carbonization and selective silica etching. The pore size, specific surface area and pore volume of RMMHC NPs can be tuned by varying the carbonization temperature (500, 700 and 900 °C). At the optimized temperature of 700 °C, the RMMHC NPs possess the highest specific surface area of 579 m² g^-1, the largest pore volume of 0.795 cm³ g^-1, and the largest pore size of 7.6 nm among all three samples. The adsorption capacity of optimized RMMHC NPs towards di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (a model organic pollutant) reaches as high as 783.1 mg g^-1. Taking advantage of the magnetic property, the adsorbents retain more than 87% of their initial adsorption capacity over five times' reuse.

Gram-scale synthesis of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanocrystal clusters with long-term charge stability for highly stable magnetically responsive photonic crystals

We report the gram-scale hydrothermal synthesis of superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ CNCs with superior long-term charge stability, which are suitable building blocks for magnetically responsive photonic crystals (MRPCs) with widely, rapidly and reversibly tunable diffractions across the visible and near IR range, as well as long-term stability of photonic performances. The scalable synthesis of Fe₃O₄ CNCs with excellent long-term colloidal stability will facilitate their wide application in photonics, biomedicine, catalysis and other areas.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Study of In Vitro Cytotoxicity of ZnO-Fe3O4 Magnetic Composite Nanoparticles in Human Breast Cancer Cell Line (MDA-MB-231) and Mouse Fibroblast (NIH 3T3)

Novel magnetic composite nanoparticles (MCPs) were successfully synthesized by ex situ conjugation of synthesized ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and Fe₃O₄ NPs using trisodium citrate as linker with an aim to retain key properties of both NPs viz. inherent selectivity towards cancerous cell and superparamagnetic nature, respectively, on a single system. Successful characterization of synthesized nanoparticles was done by XRD, TEM, FTIR, and VSM analyses. VSM analysis showed similar magnetic profile of thus obtained MCPs as that of naked Fe₃O₄ NPs with reduction in saturation magnetization to 16.63 emu/g. Also, cell viability inferred from MTT assay showed that MCPs have no significant toxicity towards noncancerous NIH 3T3 cells but impart significant toxicity at similar concentration to breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231. The EC50 value of MCPs on MDA-MB-231 is less than that of naked ZnO NPs on MDA-MB-231, but its toxicity on NIH 3T3 was significantly reduced compared to ZnO NPs. Our hypothesis for this prominent difference in cytotoxicity imparted by MCPs is the synergy of selective cytotoxicity of ZnO nanoparticles via reactive oxygen species (ROS) and exhausting scavenging activity of cancerous cells, which further enhance the cytotoxicity of Fe₃O₄ NPs on cancer cells. This dramatic difference in cytotoxicity shown by the conjugation of magnetic Fe₃O₄ NPs with ZnO NPs should be further studied that might hold great promise for the development of selective and site-specific nanoparticles. Innovative Developments in Bacterial Detection with Magnetic Nanoparticles

It has been seen from the last decade that many bacterial strains are becoming insensitive to conventional detection techniques and it has its own limitations. Current developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology have expanded the ability to design and construct nanomaterials with targeting, therapeutic, and diagnostic functions. These multifunctional nanomaterials have attracted researchers, to be used as the promising tool for selective bacterial sensing applications. An important advantage of using magnetic nanoparticles to capture bacteria is the simple separation of bacteria from biological samples using magnets. This review includes significance of magnetic nanoparticles in bacterial detection. Relevant to topic, properties, designing strategies for magnetic nanoparticle, and innovative techniques used for detection are discussed. This review provides the readers how magnetic properties of nanoparticles can be utilized systematically for bacterial identification.

Size-controlled synthesis of water-dispersible superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoclusters and their magnetic responsiveness

Highly water-dispersible and size-controllable superparamagnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoclusters were synthesized by using sodium citrate with a mixed-solvent system, these nanoclusters can be used for color display and hyperthermia in biomedical applications.

Multicore iron oxide mesocrystals stabilized by a poly(phenylenepyridyl) dendron and dendrimer: role of the dendron/dendrimer self-assembly

We report the formation of multicore iron oxide mesocrystals using the thermal decomposition of iron acetyl acetonate in the presence of the multifunctional and rigid poly(phenylenepyridyl) dendron and dendrimer. We thoroughly analyze the influence of capping molecules of two different architectures and demonstrate for the first time that dendron/dendrimer self-assembly leads to multicore morphologies. Single-crystalline ordering in multicore NPs leads to cooperative magnetic behavior: mesocrystals exhibit ambient blocking temperatures, allowing subtle control over magnetic properties using a minor temperature change.

One-pot synthesis of magnetic colloidal nanocrystal clusters coated with chitosan for selective enrichment of glycopeptides

Selective enrichment of glycopeptides prior to the mass spectrometry (MS) analysis is essential due to ion suppression effect during ionization caused by the co-presence of non-glycosylated peptides. Among the enrichment approaches, hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) based on magnetic separation has become a popular method in recent years. As the conventional synthesis procedures of these materials are tedious and time-consuming with at least four steps. Herein, magnetic colloidal nanocrystal clusters coated with chitosan (Fe3O4@CS MCNCs) have been successfully prepared by a simple one-pot method. The resulting Fe3O4@CS MCNCs demonstrated an excellent ability for glycopeptide enrichment with high selectivity, low detection limit and high binding capacity. Furthermore, in the analysis of real complicated biological sample, 283 unique N-glycosylation sites corresponding to 175 glycosylated proteins were identified in three replicate analyses of 45μg protein sample extracted from HeLa cells, indicating the great potential in detection and identification of low abundant glycopeptides in glycoproteome analysis.

Synthesis of multifunctional Fe₃O₄-CdSe/ZnS nanoclusters coated with lipid A toward dendritic cell-based immunotherapy

We demonstrate a novel route to synthesize Fe3O4-CdSe/ZnS multifunctional nanoclusters (MNCs) with excellent optical and magnetic properties and biocompatibility. The successful fabrication of highly fluorescent and magnetic MNCs is achieved via a coupling process based on a partial ligand exchange reaction at the aqueous-organic solution interface. In addition, we show that dendritic cells (DCs), the sentinel of the immune system, can uptake the MNCs without significant change in cell viability. The MNCs uptaken by the DCs can be used for imaging, tracking, and separating the DCs. Furthermore, the MNCs can be loaded with a pathogen-associated molecular pattern, lipid A, via a hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. Ex vivo labeling of DCs with the MNC-lipid A complex enhances the DC migration to draining lymph nodes and tumor antigen-specific T cell responses in vivo. Our work may contribute to the development of synthetic routes to various multifunctional nanoclusters and DC-based cancer immunotherapies.

Assembly-mediated interplay of dipolar interactions and surface spin disorder in colloidal maghemite nanoclusters

Controlled assembly of single-crystal, colloidal maghemite nanoparticles is facilitated via a high-temperature polyol-based pathway. Structural characterization shows that size-tunable nanoclusters of 50 and 86 nm diameters (D), with high dispersibility in aqueous media, are composed of ∼13 nm (d) crystallographically oriented nanoparticles. The interaction effects are examined against the increasing volume fraction, φ, of the inorganic magnetic phase that goes from individual colloidal nanoparticles (φ = 0.47) to clusters (φ = 0.72). The frozen-liquid dispersions of the latter exhibit weak ferrimagnetic behaviour at 300 K. Comparative Mössbauer spectroscopic studies imply that intra-cluster interactions come into play. New insight emerges from the clusters' temperature-dependent ac susceptibility that displays two maxima in χ''(T), with strong frequency dispersion. Scaling-law analysis together with the observed memory effects suggests that a superspin-glass state settles-in at TB ∼ 160-200 K, while at lower-temperatures, surface spin-glass freezing is established at Tf ∼ 40-70 K. In such nanoparticle-assembled systems, with increased φ, Monte Carlo simulations corroborate the role of the inter-particle dipolar interactions and that of the constituent nanoparticles' surface spin disorder in the emerging spin-glass dynamics.
