Abstract
Motivated by recent study on synthesized N, N-diphenylaniline (DPA)-based dyes [DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.solener.2022.01.062 ] for use in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), we theoretically design several dyes and explore their potential for enhancing the efficiency of DSSCs. Our designed dyes are based on the molecular structure of synthesized DPA-azo-A and DPA-azo-N dyes with a donor-π-bridge-acceptor (D-π-A) framework. In this research, we aim to develop the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSCs by fine-tuning the molecular structure of the synthesized dyes. To this end, we focus on designing dyes by replacing the units of DPA-azo-A and DPA-azo-N with a variety of donor, π-bridge, and acceptor. Hence the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations are done to explore their structure, electronic, optical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties. Among all newly designed and reference dyes, the D3-azo-N and DPA-π3-N dyes which are designed by substituting the donor (DPA) and π-bridge (azo) units of DPA-azo-N with D3 and π3, respectively exhibit the highest PCE of 45.46% (for D3-azo-N) and 43.20% (for DPA-π3-N) and can be favorable dyes for improving the efficiency of DSSCs. Therefore, the dyes that are designed by substituting the donor and π-bridge units of synthesized dyes have more impact on improving the efficiency of DSSCs than those that involve replacing the acceptor units. Consequently, our theoretical findings will provide valuable insights for the experimentalists to employ these novel effective dyes and boost the performance of DSSCs.

Abstract
Among the metal-free dyes, boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) has attracted much attention in the solar cell industry due to its thermal stability and tunable electronic and photophysical properties. However, the low power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells based on BODIPY has limited their widespread application. Accordingly, different types of structural modifications have already been proposed to improve the photophysical properties of the BODIPY dyes. In this study, we used the strategy of constructing BODIPY-based covalent macrostructures by integrating two BODIPY subunits via a π-linker in linear and cyclic configurations. To this end, various types of the π-linkers including butadiyne, phenyl, and thiophene derivatives are considered. The structural, electronic, and optical properties as well as the photovoltaic performance of BODIPY dimers are theoretically calculated within DCM solvent. The results indicate that for a given linker, the BODIPY dimers with a linear configuration show better performance as compared to their macrocyclic counterparts. The reason is the enhancement of π-conjugation length, higher light harvesting ability, and proper charge carrier separation in linearly linked BODIPYs. In the cyclic series, the dyes incorporating phenyl linkers exhibit greater power conversion efficiency of up to 9%. For the dyes with a linear configuration, the involvement of a thienyl-thiophene bridge results in lower charge recombination and enhances the efficiency by up to 15%, which are expected to be potential candidates for organic dyes applied in DSSCs.

Abstract
This research focuses on the first demonstration of NO2Lw (2-hydroxy-3-nitronaphthalene-1,4-dione) as a photosensitizer and TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5 as photoanode materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The metal-free organic photosensitizer (i.e., nitro-group-substituted naphthoquinone, NO2Lw) was synthesized for this purpose. As a photoanode material, metal oxides, such as TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5, were selected. The synthesized NO2Lw contains an electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) and anchoring groups (-OH) that exhibit absorption in the visible range. The UV-visible absorbance spectrum of NO2Lw demonstrates the absorption ascribed to ultraviolet and visible region charge transfer. The NO2Lw interacts with the TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5 photoanode, as shown by bathochromic shifts in wavelengths in the photosensitizer-loaded TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5 photoanodes. FT-IR analysis also studied the bonding interaction between NO2Lw and TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5 photoanode material. The TiO2, ZnO, and Nb2O5 photoanodes loaded with NO2Lw exhibit a shift in the wavenumber of the functional groups, indicating that these groups were involved in loading the NO2Lw photosensitizer. The amount of photosensitizer loading was calculated, showing that TiO2 has higher loading than ZnO and Nb2O5 photoanodes; this factor may constitute an increased JSC value of the TiO2 photoanode. The device performance is compared using photocurrent-voltage (J-V) curves; electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement examines the device's charge transport. The TiO2 photoanode showed higher performance than the ZnO and Nb2O5 photoanodes in terms of photoelectrochemical properties. When compared to ZnO and Nb2O5 photoanodes-based DSSCs, the TiO2 photoanode Bode plot shows a signature frequency peak corresponding to electron recombination rate toward the low-frequency region, showing that TiO2 has a greater electron lifetime than ZnO and Nb2O5 photoanodes based DSSCs.

Abstract
Electro- and photochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is the quintessence of modern-day sustainable research. We report our studies on the electro- and photoinduced interfacial charge transfer occurring in a nanocrystalline mesoporous TiO2 film and two TiO2/iron porphyrin hybrid films (meso-aryl- and β-pyrrole-substituted porphyrins, respectively) under CO2R conditions. We used transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) to demonstrate that, under 355 nm laser excitation and an applied voltage bias (0 to -0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl), the TiO2 film exhibited a diminution in the transient absorption (at -0.5 V by 35%), as well as a reduction of the lifetime of the photogenerated electrons (at -0.5 V by 50%) when the experiments were conducted under a CO2 atmosphere changing from inert N2. The TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed faster charge recombination kinetics, featuring 100-fold faster transient signal decays than that of the TiO2 film. The electro-, photo-, and photoelectrochemical CO2R performance of the TiO2 and TiO2/iron porphyrin films are evaluated within the bias range of -0.5 to -1.8 V vs Ag/AgCl. The bare TiO2 film produced CO and CH4 as well as H2, depending on the applied voltage bias. In contrast, the TiO2/iron porphyrin films showed the exclusive formation of CO (100% selectivity) under identical conditions. During the CO2R, a gain in the overpotential values is obtained under light irradiation conditions. This finding was indicative of a direct transfer of the photogenerated electrons from the film to absorbed CO2 molecules and an observed decrease in the decay of the TAS signals. In the TiO2/iron porphyrin films, we identified the interfacial charge recombination processes between the oxidized iron porphyrin and the electrons of the TiO2 conduction band. These competitive processes are considered to be responsible for the diminution of direct charge transfer between the film and the adsorbed CO2 molecules, explaining the moderate performances of the hybrid films for the CO2R.

Abstract
In this work, we report the design and the preparation of two new dyes and a molecular dyad for the photoelectrochemical hydrogen production from water in a dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cell (DSPEC). We designed dyes that include a benzothiadiazole (BTD) and an indacenodithiophene (IDT) units, and we obtained a new molecular dyad by covalent coupling with the cobalt diimine-dioxime catalyst. The introduction of the benzothiadiazole core in the structure improves the absorption properties and leads to an extension of the spectrum in the visible range up to 650 nm. The photoelectrochemical properties of the new dyad were evaluated on pristine and lithium-doped NiO electrodes. We demonstrate that increasing the light harvesting efficiency of the dyad by introducing a IDT-BTD chromophore is clearly beneficial for the photoelectrochemical activity. We also demonstrate that lithium doping of NiO, which improves the electronic conductivity of the mesoporous film, leads to a significant increase in performance, in terms of TON and F.E., more than doubled with our new dyad. This BTD-based molecular system outperforms the results of previously reported dyads using the same catalyst.

Abstract
Understanding the excited-state charge transfer/separation (CT/CS) of donor-π-acceptor chromophores can provide guidance for designing and synthesizing advanced dyes to improve the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in practical applications. Herein, two newly synthesized electronic push-pull molecules, CS-14 and CS-15, that consist of carbazole donor and benzothiadiazole acceptor segments are chosen to explore the ultrafast dynamics of intramolecular CT/CS processes. The theoretical calculation results depict an excited-state intramolecular CT character for both dyes, while the dihedral angle between donor and acceptor of CS-14 is larger than that of CS-15, suggesting a more significant CT character of CS-14. Furthermore, compared to CS-14, the bond rotation of CS-15 between donor and π-bridge is restricted by employing the hexatomic ring, indicating the stronger molecular planarization of CS-15. Ultrafast spectroscopy clearly shows a solvent polarity-dependent excited-state species evolution from CT to CS-the CT character is observed in low-polar toluene solvent, while the feature of the CS state in polar tetrahydrofuran and acetone solvents is captured, which successfully proved a solvent polarity modulated excited-state CT/CS characters. We also found that though the generation of the CS state within CS-14 is slightly faster than that of CS-15, the charge recombination process of CS-15 with excellent planar conformation is much slower, providing enough time for a higher charge migration efficiency in DSSCs.

Abstract
Rhodamine 6G dyes are low-cost, highly soluble fluorescent dyes frequently utilized as laser dyes, chemical sensors, and as tracer dyes in the determination of the direction and rate of flow of water. In this study, the photophysical properties of three rhodamine 6G dyes, bearing phenyl (P15), furan (P41), and 5-hydroxymethyl furan (P45), and their metal complexes were investigated using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence lifetime, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements. Rhodamine 6G dyes and their complexes were subsequently applied as sensitizing dyes in the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells, and the solar to electric power efficiency and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed. The solar to electric power efficiency values of the metal complexes of the rhodamine 6G dyes were higher than those of the devices fabricated with only rhodamine dyes without copper (II). The most significant change was observed in rhodamine P41 with a 30% increase in solar to electric power efficiency when the dye was conjugated to the copper ion.

Abstract
Efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from donor to acceptor in dye molecules is the functional basis and key property in the working of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). To understand the ICT process in photoexcited dye molecules, we analyze the electronic properties and structural parameters of a chosen set of experimentally synthesized donor-acceptor (D-A) and donor-π-spacer-acceptor (D-π-A) type dye molecules in their ground, excited, and cationic states. The correlation between structural modification and charge redistribution in different parts of the molecule helps to identify the extent of π-conjugation and spatial rearrangement of electron density localization along the molecular skeleton. We find that prominent twisting of several groups and the resulting molecular bond rearrangements in larger parts of the molecule promote efficient donor to acceptor ICT, such as in D-A type ADEKA1 and C275 dyes. Thus, based on the modest computation of structural and electronic properties of dye molecules in their respective ground, excited, and cationic states, we identify the desired structural changes that facilitate tunable intramolecular charge transfer to highlight a simple and direct prescription to screen out probable efficient dye molecules among many samples. Our approach complements recent experimental evidence of capturing the structural view of the excited-state charge transfer in molecules.

Abstract
The use of renewable energy is essential for the future of the Earth, and solar photons are the ultimate source of energy to satisfy the ever-increasing global energy demands. Photoconversion using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is becoming an established technology to contribute to the sustainable energy market, and among state-of-the art DSCs are those which rely on ruthenium(ii) sensitizers and the triiodide/iodide (I3 -/I-) redox mediator. Ruthenium is a critical raw material, and in this review, we focus on the use of coordination complexes of the more abundant first row d-block metals, in particular copper, iron and zinc, as dyes in DSCs. A major challenge in these DSCs is an enhancement of their photoconversion efficiencies (PCEs) which currently lag significantly behind those containing ruthenium-based dyes. The redox mediator in a DSC is responsible for regenerating the ground state of the dye. Although the I3 -/I- couple has become an established redox shuttle, it has disadvantages: its redox potential limits the values of the open-circuit voltage (V OC) in the DSC and its use creates a corrosive chemical environment within the DSC which impacts upon the long-term stability of the cells. First row d-block metal coordination compounds, especially those containing cobalt, and copper, have come to the fore in the development of alternative redox mediators and we detail the progress in this field over the last decade, with particular attention to Cu2+/Cu+ redox mediators which, when coupled with appropriate dyes, have achieved V OC values in excess of 1000 mV. We also draw attention to aspects of the recyclability of DSCs.

Abstract
Literature studies on the effects of alkyne functionality in manipulating the optical properties of donor-π-acceptor-type molecular scaffolds have been scarce compared to those on the alkene functional group. Here, two structurally isomeric donor-acceptor (D-A) dyes were synthesized to study the positional effect of alkyne functionality (triple bond) on their optical, electrochemical and charge generation properties in order to design efficient dyes for possible application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes, named CAPC and PACC, contain carbazole and cyanoacrylic acid as the donor and acceptor units, respectively, and the π-conjugation length within the molecules was controlled by the introduction of an alkyne group. The D-π-A design was followed in designing CAPC with the alkyne serving as the π-spacer, while in PACC, alkyne was placed on the donor, which was directly in conjugation with the acceptor. This rendered equal conjugation lengths within the designed dyes. With the help of photophysical characterizations, it was concluded that CAPC featured better characteristics for a DSSC dye than PACC. Our conclusions were further supported by the results of transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis, fluorescence lifetime studies and density functional theory.

Push-Pull Heterocyclic Dyes Based on Pyrrole and Thiophene: Synthesis and Evaluation of Their Optical, Redox and Photovoltaic Properties. COATINGS 2021. Abstract
Three heterocyclic dyes were synthesized having in mind the changes in the photovoltaic, optical and redox properties by functionalization of 5-aryl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, 5-arylthiophene and bis-methylpyrrolylthiophene π-bridges with different donor, acceptor/anchoring groups. Knoevenagel condensation of the aldehyde precursors with 2-cyanoacetic acid was used to prepare the donor-acceptor functionalized heterocyclic molecules. These organic metal-free dyes are constituted by thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, arylthiophene, bis-methylpyrrolylthiophene, spacers and one or two cyanoacetic acid acceptor groups and different electron donor groups (alkoxyl, and pyrrole electron-rich heterocycle). The evaluation of the redox, optical and photovoltaic properties of these compounds indicate that 5-aryl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based dye functionalized with an ethoxyl electron donor and a cyanoacetic acid electron acceptor group/anchoring moiety displays as sensitizer for DSSCs the best conversion efficiency (2.21%). It is mainly assigned to the higher molar extinction coefficient, long π-conjugation of the heterocyclic system, higher oxidation potential and strong electron donating capacity of the ethoxyl group compared to the pirrolyl moiety.

Abstract
Two novel azo dyes with D-π-A-π-D structures were designed and synthesized to investigate the relationship between molecular structure and sensitizing performance on applying for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) in comparison with their linear counterparts. Introducing hydroxyl auxiliary groups and arranging π-conjugation length as two parallel and series structural architectures, Y-shape and linear, led to red shift in absorption wavelength and increase in absorption intensity for the Y-shape pattern providing an efficient charge transfer pathway and improved Jsc and η of the DSSCs. Emerging a zwitterionic form, azonium structure, of the sensitizer in parallel configuration for the dyes 1a.p and 1b.p, enhanced light absorption domain and changed anchoring fashion could engendering improved electronic overlapping. The easily-synthesized dyes were evaluated for photophysical and electrochemical properties and turned out that the parallel-decorated dyes displayed better results than the series types as photosensitizers for DSSCs. ATR and Raman spectra clearly showed the adsorption of these dyes on the TiO2 surface. Operational tests of DSSCs, coated by titled azo dyes, illustrated that decorating π-conjugation pattern as parallel structure as well as accessorizing the donor unit with hydroxyl groups improved the photovoltaic performance. Optimized band gap due to participating the azonium structure and restricted electron recombination as well as rectified dye regeneration were proposed as main elements in enhancing performance parameters. A higher solar conversion efficiency was recorded for DSSCs based on the Y-shape dyes compared to other meta azo dye-based cells that were previously reported. Computational calculations were used to corroborate the opto-electrochemical traits of the dyes with a special concern on the influence of structural pattern on photovoltaic features.

Abstract
A novel liquid crystal homologous series based on the benzene sulphonic acid moiety, namely (E)-4-((4-((4-(alkoxy)benzoyl)oxy)benzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (Sn), was synthesized and examined via different experimental and theoretical measurements. The four synthesized members have terminally connected alkoxy chain groups, which vary between 6 and 12 carbons. FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analyses, were used to confirm their molecular structures. Mesomorphic and optical investigations of the prepared homologues were also conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The DSC and POM characterization revealed that all of the synthesized sulphonic acid members are monomorphic, exhibiting a pure smectic A (SmA) mesophase with enantiotropic properties. Moreover, all compounds in the group have high thermal transition temperatures. The terminal electron-withdrawing group -SO3H plays a considerable role in the stabilization of the molecule, which in return resulted in high thermal SmA stability. Furthermore, the experimental data relating to the mesophase behavior were substantiated via computational studies using the DFT approach. In addition, the terminal -SO3H moiety has an essential impact on the thermal and physical parameters of possible geometries. All members of the synthesized Sn series exhibit ohmic behavior with electrical resistance in the GΩ range, as revealed by electrical measurements. The S10 electrode had the highest electrical conductivity: 35.16 pS. It also showed two direct optical band gaps of 3.58 and 3.23 eV with Urbach energies of 1261.1 and 502.4 meV. Upon decreasing the number of carbon atoms to n = 6, the main bandgap for S6 reduced to 3.3 eV. The highest conductivity, good absorption, and two large bandgaps recorded for the chain derivative S10 make it suitable for investigations relating to energy-based applications.

Abstract
With the depletion of fossil energy, solar energy has gradually attracted people's attention. Dye-sensitized solar cells have developed rapidly in recent years due to their low cost and high conversion efficiency. In this article, based on the theoretical research on the photovoltaic parameters of DSSCs in the early stages of the research team, we have made an accurate prediction of J sc, V oc, and PCE of C286. (The error in our predicted PCE values was 3.33% relative to the experiment.) Also, we further designed a series of new dyes CH1-CH5 by introducing donors and co-acceptors with C286-C288 as the prototype using the DFT/TDDFT method. The PCE of the designed dyes CH2-CH5 exceed the given dye C286, especially the CH3 and CH4 obtained the PCE of 26.2 and 14.5%. This indicates the proposed dyes offer a dramatic improvement on PCE for DSSC devices. Moreover, the designed dyes such as CH3 and CH4 have great potential to be applied to photovoltaic applications, further enabling the design of novel, highly efficient photoactive materials.

Abstract
Aiming to explore the relationship between the molecular structure and photovoltaic performance, three pyran isomer dyes DO, DM and DP were synthesized and applied as a co-sensitizer with N719 dye in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). These sensitizers were investigated by theoretical calculation, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry measurement to understand their structure, optical and electrochemical properties. The DSC devices based on N719 and the co-sensitizers were characterized using I–V tests, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. As compared to the standard N719-based DSCs, the co-sensitization system of N719 and DM with the most sterical structure exhibited an enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) by 18% from 7.60% to 8.96%. Both the short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc) of the co-sensitized systems were increased resulting from the better maintained N719 dye loading amount on TiO2 as well as the prevention of dye aggregation. Co-sensitization of the DO molecule with less steric hindrance reduced the desorbed N719 dye amount by half leading to a decline of the photo-harvesting ability and photocurrent generation in DSCs. This work applied three isomers with different spatial geometries as co-sensitizers to enhance N719-based dye sensitized solar cells.![]()

Improving the optical properties of [5] circulene with different electron donors and acceptor substitutions (push-pull system). J Mol Model 2020; 26:348. Abstract
In this research, the circulene molecule was selected, and the electron donor and acceptor groups were attached to improve its optical properties. Large negative values of enthalpies, Gibbs free energies, and exothermic energies of formation for these molecules, especially for the CN-CIR-NHLi molecule, show that their formation is highly reasonable. It was illustrated that the Eg of the circulene molecule was lowered in the electron donor and acceptor groups' presence, while the CN-CIR-NHLi and CF3-CIR-NHLi molecules have the lowest values of Eg. It was observed that the optical properties of circulene molecules were improved in electron donor and acceptor groups' presence. Between these groups, the -CN and -CF3 as electron acceptors and -NHLi substituents, as electron donor groups, yield higher enhancements on the optical properties of circulene, which is in agreement with the results obtained for Eg values. Abstract
Three novel dyes consisting of a 5,8,15-tris(2-ethylhexyl)-8,15-dihydro-5H-benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b':6,5-b″]tricarbazole (BTC) electron-donating group and a 4,7-bis(4-hexylthiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (BTBT) π-bridge with an anchoring group of phenyl carboxyl acid were synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs).The AJ202 did not contain any triple bonds, the AJ201's ethynyl group was inserted between the BTC and BTBT units, and the AJ206's ethynyl group was introduced between the BTBT moiety and the anchor group. The inclusion and position of the ethynyl linkage in the sensitizer molecules significantly altered the electrochemical properties of these dyes, which can fine-tune the energy levels of the dyes. The best performing devices contained AJ206 as a sensitizer and a Cu(I/II) redox couple, which resulted in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 10.8% under the standard AM 1.5 G illumination, which obtained PCEs higher than those from the devices that contained AJ201 (9.2%) and AJ202 (9.7%) under the same conditions. The highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of the sensitizers were tuned to be well-suited for the Cu(I/II) redox potential and the Fermi level of TiO2. The innovative synthesis of a tricarbazole-based donor moiety in a sensitizer used in combination with a Cu(I/II) redox couple has resulted in relatively high PCEs.

Abstract
A new bipyridyl Ru(ii) sensitizer incorporating triphenylamine and the 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) ancillary ligand IMA5 was synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The performance of these DSSCs has been enhanced via di-anchoring metal-free organic sensitizers, denoted IMA1-4, with structural motif A-π-D-π-A and incorporating phenyl-dibenzothiophene-phenyl (Ph-DBT-Ph) as the main building block but with different anchoring groups (A). These new organic sensitizers were well-characterized and used as efficient co-sensitizers. Their photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties were studied. Furthermore, molecular modeling studies using DFT calculations were used to investigate their suitability as effective sensitizers/co-sensitizers. The molecular orbital isodensity showed distinguishable delocalization of the intramolecular charge in the DBT moiety. The photovoltaic characterization showed that IMA3 had the best DSSC performance (η = 2.41%). In addition, IMA1-4 was co-sensitized in conjunction with the newly synthesized IMA5 complex to enhance light harvesting across expanded spectral regions and thus improve efficiency. The solar cells co-sensitized with IMA2, IMA3 and IMA4 exhibited improved efficiency (η) of 6.25, 6.19 and 5.83%, respectively, which outperformed the device employing IMA5 alone (η = 5.54%) owing to the improvement in the loading of IMA2, IMA3 and IMA4 in the presence of IMA5 on the surface of the TiO2 nanoparticles, and charge recombination was suppressed.

Abstract
Very recently, we have reported the synthesis and evaluation of biological properties of new merocyanine dyes composed of triphenylamine moiety, π-aromatic spacer, and rhodanine/2-thiohydantoin-based moiety. Interestingly, 2-thiohydantoin has never been studied before as an electron-accepting/anchoring group for the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In the presented study, we examined the applicability of 2-thiohydantoin, an analog of rhodanine, in DSSC technology. The research included theoretical calculations, electrochemical measurements, optical characterization, and tests of the solar cells. As a result, we proved that 2-thiohydantoin might be considered as an acceptor/anchoring group since all the compounds examined in this study were active. The most efficient device showed power conversion efficiency of 2.59%, which is a promising value for molecules of such a simple structure. It was found that the cells' performances were mainly attributed to the dye loading and the ICT molecular absorption coefficients, both affected by the differences in the chemical structure of the dyes. Moreover, the effect of the aromatic spacer size and the introduction of carboxymethyl co-anchoring group on photovoltaic properties was observed and discussed.

Abstract
We report density functional theory (DFT) calculations of three newly synthesized oligomethine cyanine-based dyes as potential TiO2-sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. The three dyes have π-symmetry and the same acceptor side, terminating in the carboxylic anchor, but they differ through the π-bridge and the donor groups. We perform DFT and time-dependent DFT studies and present the electronic structure and optical properties of the dyes alone as well as adsorbed to the TiO2 nanocluster, to provide some predictions on the photovoltaic performance of the system. We analyze theoretically the factors that can influence the short circuit current and the open circuit voltage of the dye-sensitized solar cells. We examine the matching of the absorption spectra of the dye and dye-nanocluster system with the solar irradiation spectrum. We display the energy level diagrams and discuss the alignment between the excited state of the dyes and the conduction band edge of the oxide as well as between the redox level of the electrolyte and the ground state of the dyes. We determine the electron density of the key molecular orbitals and analyze comparatively the electron transfer from the dye to the semiconducting substrate. To put our findings in the right perspective we compare the results of our calculations with those obtained for a coumarin-based dye used in fabricating and testing actual devices, for which experimental data regarding the photovoltaic performance are available.

Natural Dyes from Mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum) as Sensitizers in Solar Cells. ENERGIES 2020. [DOI: 10.3390/en13040785] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/07/2023]
Abstract
Photovoltaic energy presents environmental advantages; however, these advantages are limited by the cost of manufacturing solar cells and in many cases, scarce or dangerous materials are incorporated. Therefore, the use of natural dyes from mortiño (Vaccinium floribundum) as sensitizers in solar cells is proposed. The dyes were extracted by maceration in acidified methanol (HCl, citric acid and trifluoroacetic acid TFA) and were characterized by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and spectrometric methods (UV-Vis, IR and MS-MALDI). The construction and characterization of cells were in standard conditions. The study confirms that pigments in mortiño are flavonoids of the anthocyanidin group as: cyanidin-3-galactoside, and cyanidin-3-arabinoside. The efficiency of solar cells was between 0.18–0.26%; the extraction with TFA in methanol leads to the best performance. Although they have low power conversion efficiency, mortiño dyes could be an alternative to artificial sensitizers for solar cell technologies because they are harmless and abundant substances.

Abstract
Bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are regarded as promising solar energy conversion devices with high efficiency and less resource consumption. In this work, a highly transparent and efficient counter electrode (CE) is fabricated by introducing highly dispersed single Pt atoms doped into the van der Waals layer-by-layer epitaxially grown Zn-TCPP thin film (Zn-TCPP-Pt). The resulting Zn-TCPP-Pt CE has similar catalytic activity to commercial Pt CE but shows a better light transmission capacity in the range of visible light. The bifacial DSSC with Zn-TCPP-Pt thin film CE achieves high power conversion efficiencies of 5.48 and 4.88% under front-side and rear-side irradiation, respectively. With maximized atomic efficiency, excellent performance was obtained with about 1% Pt content and highly transparent CEs. Therefore, the light energy resource utilization rate of such less Pt and transparence CE is greatly improved in bifacial dye-sensitized solar cells, making it a promising candidate to replace Pt CE.

Abstract
Theoretical insights on the comparison between the champion dyes SM315 and C275 used for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) reaching over 12% efficiency with different electron donors only (porphyrin for SM315 and indenoperylene for C275) were explored for the first time. The intrinsic reasons for the significantly improved monochromatic photon-to-electric current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and open circuit voltage (Voc) of C275-based DSSCs over those of SM315 were revealed. According to our results, we find that the larger IPCE of C275 is attributed to its larger electronic coupling, smaller reorganization energy, reduced exciton binding energy and enhanced charge transfer character, all of which when combined lead to a larger electron injection efficiency. In addition, the larger Voc of C275 is due to a greater number of injected electrons, a smaller molecular volume and a smaller projected area, which lead to a more compact adsorption layer with a hindered charge recombination process. Thus, C275 is expected to have more potential to further optimize high-performance DSSCs. In view of the primary shortcoming of C275, which is its relatively narrow absorption spectrum, further optimization was made through structural modification using a series of heterocyclic anchoring groups. Using the same evaluation criteria, the theoretical screening of these dyes based on C275 is carried out. We find that indenoperylene dye with a barbituric acid (BA) anchoring group is a promising candidate for the experimental synthesis of high-performance DSSCs with improved Jsc, Voc and adsorption stability.

Abstract
![]()
The structure of the copper complex
of the 6-((1-butanethiol)oxy)-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand (Cu-tmpa-O(CH2)4SH) anchored to a gold surface has been investigated.
To enable covalent attachment of the complex to the gold surface,
a heteromolecular self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of butanethiol and
a thiol-substituted tmpa ligand was used. Subsequent formation of
the immobilized copper complex by cyclic voltammetry in the presence
of Cu(OTf)2 resulted in the formation of the anchored Cu-tmpa-O(CH2)4SH system which, according to scanning electron
microscopy and X-ray diffraction, did not contain any accumulated
copper nanoparticles or crystalline copper material. Electrochemical
investigation of the heterogenized system barely showed any redox
activity and lacked the typical CuII/I redox couple in
contrast to the homogeneous complex in solution. The difference between
the heterogenized system and the homogeneous complex was confirmed
by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; the XPS spectrum did not show
any satellite features of a CuII species but instead showed
the presence of a CuI ion in a ∼2:3 ratio to nitrogen
and a ∼2:7 ratio to sulfur. The +I oxidation state of the copper
species was confirmed by the edge position in the X-ray absorption
near-edge structure (XANES) region of the X-ray absorption spectrum.
These results show that upon immobilization of Cu-tmpa-O(CH2)4SH, the resulting structure is not identical to the
homogeneous CuII-tmpa complex. Upon anchoring, a novel
CuI species is formed instead. This illustrates the importance
of a thorough characterization of heterogenized molecular systems
before drawing any conclusions regarding the structure–function
relationships. Both the oxidation state and the structure of the CuII complex of tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (Cu-tmpa) change upon
anchoring it to a gold surface via a self-assembled monolayer. It
was shown by XPS and XANES that a CuI species is formed
upon anchoring instead in which each tmpa ligand contains roughly
two to three copper ions.

A New Series of EDOT Based Co-Sensitizers for Enhanced Efficiency of Cocktail DSSC: A Comparative Study of Two Different Anchoring Groups. Molecules 2019; 24:molecules24193554. Abstract
Herein, we report the design and synthesis strategy of a new class of five EDOT based co-sensitizers (CSGR1-5) by introducing different donors (2,3,4-trimethoxypheny, 2,4-dibutoxyphenyl, and 2,4-difluorophenyl) and anchoring groups (rhodamine-3-acetic acid and cyanoacetic acid) systematically. The synthesized metal-free organic co-sensitizers were employed for cocktail dye-sensitized solar cells along with N749 (black dye). The DSSC devices with a mixture of co-sensitizers (CSGR1-5) and N749 have shown a 7.95%, 8.40%, 7.81%, 6.56% and 6.99% power conversion efficiency (PCE) respectively, which was more than that of single N749 dye PCE (6.18%). Enhanced efficiency could be ascribed to the increased short circuit current (Jsc) and open circuit voltage (Voc). The increased Jsc was achieved due to enhanced light harvesting nature of N749 device upon co-sensitization with CSGR dyes and feasible energy levels of both the dyes. The Voc was improved due to better surface coverage which helps in decreasing the rate of recombination. The detailed optical and electrochemical properties were investigated and complimented with theoretical studies (DFT).

Abstract
Polymer dyes have many potential advantages, such as high molecular weight, better light capture ability, thermal stability, film-forming ability, light resistance, and electrochemical corrosion resistance. They are expected to provide opportunities for the development of high-stability dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). However, polymer DSCs (PDSCs) have poor short-circuit current and filling factor (FF) due to polymer aggregation and chain-winding effect. Therefore, the energy conversion efficiency is low. In this work, we are trying to find a way to solve this problem. Herein, three polymers, polyPAC-01, polyPAC-02, and polyPAC-03 with different π-bridge chains were prepared on a titanium dioxide electrode using an "adsorption first, then electropolymerization (EP)" process. Meanwhile, as a comparison, three oligomers, PAC-01, PAC-02, and PAC-03 with the same skeleton were synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction and fabricated on a titanium dioxide electrode with a "first polymerization, then adsorption" process. Then, the photoanode adsorbed by those polymers or oligomers were applied to DSCs. The results show that polymers prepared by the EP method obtained a higher short-circuit (J sc) increase, exceeding 30% and a FF increase of about 10%, and finally, the photo-to-electric conversion efficiency (PCE) increased exceeding 40%, compared to the oligomers. In addition, desorption experiments in a harsh environment show that the EP method-synthesized polymers (polyPAC-03 as a representative) have better solvent resistance and adsorption stability than the corresponding oligomers (PAC-03). The results show that the process of "adsorption first, then EP" may be an effective way to solve the bottlenecks of low energy conversion efficiency on PDSCs and provide a new way to develop stable and efficient DSCs.

Abstract
Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are a highly promising alternative to conventional photovoltaic silicon-based devices, due to the potential low cost and the interesting conversion efficiencies. A key-role is played by the dye, and porphyrin sensitizers have drawn great interest because of their excellent light harvesting properties mimicking photosynthesis. Indeed, porphyrins are characterized by strong electronic absorption bands in the visible region up to the near infrared and by long-lived π* singlet excited states. Moreover, the presence of four meso and eight β-pyrrolic positions allows a fine tuning of their photoelectrochemical properties through structural modification. Trans-A2BC push-pull ZnII porphyrins, characterized by a strong and directional electron excitation process along the push-pull system, have been extensively investigated. On the other hand, A4 β-pyrrolic substituted tetraaryl ZnII porphyrins, which incorporate a tetraaryl porphyrinic core as a starting material, have received lower attention, even if they are synthetically more attractive and show several advantages such as a more sterically hindered architecture and enhanced solubility in most common organic solvents. The present contribution intends to review the most prominent A4 β-substituted ZnII porphyrins reported in the literature so far for application in DSSCs, focusing on the strategies employed to enhance the light harvesting capability of the dye and on a comparison with meso-substituted analogs.
