Anion-tuned supramolecular gels: a natural evolution from urea supramolecular chemistry

Efficient antimicrobial applications of two novel supramolecular metallogels derived from a l(+)-tartaric acid low molecular weight gelator

Novel metallogels were synthesized using l(+)-tartaric acid as a gelator, along with cadmium(ii)-acetate and mercury(ii)-acetate in N,N-dimethyl formamide at room temperature. Rheological analyses confirmed the mechanical stability of Cd(ii)- and Hg(ii)-metallogels under varying conditions. Characterization through EDX mapping and FESEM imaging provided insights into their chemical constituents and microstructural features. FT-IR spectroscopy elucidated the metallogel formation mechanism. Antimicrobial assays revealed significant activity against various bacteria, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. This study presents a comprehensive exploration of Cd(ii) and Hg(ii)-based l(+)-tartaric acid-mediated metallogels, highlighting their potential in combating bacterial infections. These findings suggest promising applications in both industrial and biomedical fields, offering avenues for the development of advanced materials.

Handedness-Inverted and Stimuli-Responsive Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nano/Micromaterials Through Pathway-Dependent Chiral Supramolecular Polymorphism

The precise manipulation of supramolecular polymorphs has been widely applied to control the morphologies and functions of self-assemblies, but is rarely utilized for the fabrication of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with tailored properties. Here, this work reports that an amphiphilic naphthalene-histidine compound (NIHis) readily self-assembled into distinct chiral nanostructures through pathway-dependent supramolecular polymorphism, which shows opposite and multistimuli responsive CPL signals. Specifically, NIHis display assembly-induced CPL from the polymorphic keto tautomer, which become predominant during enol-keto tautomerization shifting controlled by a bulk solvent effect. Interestingly, chiral polymorphs of nanofiber and microbelt with inverted CPL signals can be prepared from the same NIHis monomer in exactly the same solvent compositions and concentrations by only changing the temperature. The tunable CPL performance of the solid microbelts is realized under multi external physical or chemical stimuli including grinding, acid fuming, and heating. In particular, an emission color and CPL on-off switch based on the microbelt polymorph by reversible heating-cooling protocol is developed. This work brings a new approach for developing smart CPL materials via supramolecular polymorphism engineering.

Supramolecular Handshakes: Characterization of Urea-Carboxylate Interactions Within Calixarene Frameworks

The research of molecular capsules offers high application potential and numerous benefits in various fields. With the aim of forming supramolecular capsules which can be reversibly assembled and dissociated by simple external stimuli, we studied interactions between calixarenes containing urea and carboxylate moieties. To this end two ureido-derivatives of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene comprising phenylureido-moieties and diacetate-calix[4]arenes were prepared. The binding of acetate by ureido-derivatives of calixarene in acetonitrile was characterized, revealing high affinity of ureido-calixarenes for carboxylates. This suggested high potential for uniting the complementary calix[4]arenes via H-bonds between carboxylic groups and urea moieties. The assembly of calixarenes was examined in detail by means of UV, 1H NMR, ITC, DOSY, MS, and conductometry providing insight in the structure-stability relationship. The tetraureido-calixarene derivative formed the most stable heterodimers with diacetate-calix[4]arenes featuring practically quantitative association upon mixing the two calixarene counterparts. The possibility of controlling the formation of the heterodimer by protonating the carboxylates, thereby hindering the interactions critical for capsule assembly, was investigated. Indeed, the reversibility of breaking and re-forming the heterodimer by addition of an acid and base to the solution containing urea- and carboxylate-derivative calix[4]arene was demonstrated using NMR spectroscopy.

Recognition of Amino Acid Salts by Temperature-Dependent Allosteric Binding with Stereodynamic Urea Receptors

Positive homotropic artificial allosteric systems are important for the regulation of cooperativity, selectivity and nonlinear amplification. Stereodynamic homotropic allosteric receptors can transmit and amplify induced chirality by the first ligand binding to axial chirality between two chromophores. We herein report stereodynamic allosteric urea receptors consisting of a rotational shaft as the axial chirality unit, terphenyl units as structural transmission sites and four urea units as binding sites. NMR titration experiments revealed that the receptor can bind two carboxylate guests in a positive homotropic allosteric manner attributed to the inactivation by intramolecular hydrogen-bonding between urea units within the receptor. In addition, the VT-CD spectra observed upon binding of the urea receptor with l- or D-amino acid salts in MeCN showed interesting temperature-dependent Cotton effects, based on the differences of the receptor shaft unit and the guest structure. The successful discrimination of hydrocarbon-based side chains of amino acid salts indicated that the input of chiral and steric information for the guest was amplified as outputs of the Cotton effect and the temperature-dependence of VT-CD spectra through cooperativity of positive allosteric binding.

Methyl Pyruvate Oxime as a Carbonyl Synthon: Synthesis of Ureas, Carbamates, Thiocarbamates, and Anilides

A new strategy for the synthesis of unsymmetrical ureas, carbamates, thiocarbamates, and anilides was developed with methyl pyruvate oxime as the carbonyl synthon. The intrinsic reactivity of the reagent enabled consecutive disubstitution involving direct amidation and one-pot deoximative substitution with various nucleophiles. The utility of the method was demonstrated with the synthesis of bioactive molecules.

Nanoscale assembly of enantiomeric supramolecular gels driven by the nature of solvents

Understanding the key parameters that control the self-assembly process is critical to predict self-assembly modes in multi-component systems, which will lead to the development of nanofibrous materials with tuneable properties. Enantiomeric amino acid-based low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) were mixed in polar (polar protic) and aromatic apolar (aromatic) solvents and compared to their individual counterparts to probe the effect of solvent polarity on the self-assembly process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that xerogels of individual components display hollow needles in polar protic solvents, while chiral coils are observed in aromatic solvents. In contrast, the multi-component gel displays hollow needle morphologies in both solvents, indicating similar morphologies in polar protic solvents but an entirely different nanostructure for the individual gel networks in aromatic solvents. PXRD experiments performed on the dried gels showed that the nature of the solvents plays a vital role in the co-assembly process of multi-component gels. The self-assembly modes and the gel state structure of the gels are analysed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and small-angle neutron diffraction (SANS), which reveals that the mixed gel undergoes different co-assembly modes depending on the nature of the solvent systems. This study shows that different co-assembly modes can be achieved for structurally similar components by varying the solvent polarity, demonstrating the importance of solvent choice in the self-assembly process of multi-component gels.

Supramolecular Gels Based on C3-Symmetric Amides: Application in Anion-Sensing and Removal of Dyes from Water

We modified C3-symmetric benzene-1,3,5-tris-amide (BTA) by introducing flexible linkers in order to generate an N-centered BTA (N-BTA) molecule. The N-BTA compound formed gels in alcohols and aqueous mixtures of high-polar solvents. Rheological studies showed that the DMSO/water (1:1, v/v) gels were mechanically stronger compared to other gels, and a similar trend was observed for thermal stability. Powder X-ray analysis of the xerogel obtained from various aqueous gels revealed that the packing modes of the gelators in these systems were similar. The stimuli-responsive properties of the N-BTA towards sodium/potassium salts indicated that the gel network collapsed in the presence of more nucleophilic anions such as cyanide, fluoride, and chloride salts at the MGC, but the gel network was intact when in contact with nitrate, sulphate, acetate, bromide, and iodide salts, indicating the anion-responsive properties of N-BTA gels. Anion-induced gel formation was observed for less nucleophilic anions below the MGC of N-BTA. The ability of N-BTA gels to act as an adsorbent for hazardous anionic and cationic dyes in water was evaluated. The results indicated that the ethanolic gels of N-BTA successfully absorbed methylene blue and methyl orange dyes from water. This work demonstrates the potential of the N-BTA gelator to act as a stimuli-responsive material and a promising candidate for water purification.

Cycloglycolurils: Hybrid Glycoluril-Cyclobenzil Macrocycles

Two novel glycoluril macrocycles have been synthesized from cyclotetrabenzil and cyclotribenzoin precursors using solvent-free condensations with urea. The crystal structure of the cyclotetra(p-phenylene)glycoluril macrocycle shows a twisted ring conformation, while that of the cyclotri(m-phenylene)glycoluril hybrid exhibits a distinct tubular supramolecular packing. These structures establish a potentially broad new class of macrocycles with intriguing guest binding properties owing to their available N-H motifs.

Scrolling in Supramolecular Gels: A Designer's Guide

Gelation by small molecules is a topic of enormous importance in catalysis, nanomaterials, drug delivery, and pharmaceutical crystallization. The mechanism by which gelators self-organize into a fibrous gel network is poorly understood. Herein, we describe the crystal structures and gelation properties of a library of bis(urea) compounds and show, via molecular dynamics simulations, how gelator aggregation progresses from a continuous pattern of supramolecular motifs to a homogeneous fiber network. Our model suggests that lamellae with asymmetric surfaces scroll into uniform unbranched fibrils, while sheets with symmetric surfaces undergo stacking to form crystals. The self-assembly of asymmetric lamellae is associated with specific molecular features, such as the presence of narrow and flexible end groups with high packing densities, and likely represents a general mechanism for the formation of small-molecule gels.

A 5-aminoisophthalic acid low molecular weight gelator based novel semiconducting supramolecular Zn(ii)-metallogel: unlocking an efficient Schottky barrier diode for microelectronics

A novel method has been successfully developed for creating supramolecular metallogels using zinc(ii) ions and 5-aminoisophthalic acid as the gelator (low molecular weight gelator) in a dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent at room temperature. Comprehensive rheological investigations confirm the robust mechanical strength of the resulting zinc(ii)-metallogel. Microstructural analysis conducted through field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) unveils a unique flake-like morphology, with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) elemental mapping confirming the prevalence of zinc as the primary constituent of the metallogel. To understand the formation mechanism of this metallogel, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was employed. Notably, these supramolecular zinc(ii)-metallogel assemblies exhibit electrical conductivity reminiscent of metal-semiconductor (MS) junction electronic components. Surprisingly, the metallogel-based thin film device showcases an impressive electrical conductivity of 1.34 × 10-5 S m-1. The semiconductor characteristics of the synthesized zinc(ii)-metallogel devices, including their Schottky barrier diode properties, have been extensively investigated. This multifaceted study opens up a promising avenue for designing functional materials tailored for electronic applications. It harnesses the synergistic properties of supramolecular metallogels and highlights their significant potential in the development of semiconductor devices. This work represents a novel approach to the creation of advanced materials with unique electronic properties, offering exciting prospects for future innovations in electronic and semiconductor technologies.

(N-Alkyloxalamido)-Amino Acid Amides as the Superior Thixotropic Phase Selective Gelators of Petrol and Diesel Fuels

(N-Alkyloxalamido)-amino acid amides 9-12 exhibit excellent gelation capacities toward some lipophilic solvents as well as toward the commercial fuels, petrol and diesel. Gelator 10 exhibits an excellent phase-selective gelation (PSG) ability and also possesses the highest gelation capacity toward petrol and diesel known to date, with minimum gelation concentration (MGC) values (%, w/v) as low as 0.012 and 0.015, respectively. The self-assembly motif of 10 in petrol and toluene gel fibres is determined from xerogel X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data via the simulated annealing procedure (SA) implemented in the EXPO2014 program and refined using the Rietveld method. The elucidated motif is strongly supported by the NMR (NOE and variable temperature) study of 10 toluene-d8 gel. It is shown that the triple unidirectional hydrogen bonding between gelator molecules involving oxalamide and carboxamide groups, together with their very low solubility, results in the formation of gel fibres of a very high aspect ratio (d = 10-30 nm, l = 0.6-1.3 μm), resulting in the as-yet unprecedented capacity of gelling commercial fuels. Rheological measurements performed at low concentrations of 10 confirmed the strength of the self-assembled network with the desired thixotropic properties that are advantageous for multiple applications. Instantaneous phase-selective gelation was obtained at room temperature through the addition of the 10 solution to the biphasic mixture of diesel and water in which the carrier solvent was congealed along with the diesel phase. The superior gelling properties and PSG ability of 10 may be used for the development of more efficient marine and surface oil spill recovery and waste water treatment technologies as well as the development of safer fuel storage and transport technologies.

Pathway complexity in fibre assembly: from liquid crystals to hyper-helical gelmorphs

Pathway complexity results in unique materials from the same components according to the assembly conditions. Here a chiral acyl-semicarbazide gelator forms three different gels of contrasting fibre morphology (termed 'gelmorphs') as well as lyotropic liquid crystalline droplets depending on the assembly pathway. The gels have morphologies that are either hyperhelical (HH-Gel), tape-fibre (TF-Gel) or thin fibril derived from the liquid crystalline phase (LC-Gels) and exhibit very different rheological properties. The gelator exists as three slowly interconverting conformers in solution. All three gels are comprised of an unsymmetrical, intramolecular hydrogen bonded conformer. The kinetics show that formation of the remarkable HH-Gel is cooperative and is postulated to involve association of the growing fibril with a non-gelling conformer. This single molecule dynamic conformational library shows how very different materials with different morphology and hence very contrasting materials properties can arise from pathway complexity as a result of emergent interactions during the assembly process.

Pyrene-Based Cationic Fluorophores with High Affinity for BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- Anions: Detection and Removal

Anions play an indispensable role in the balance and regulation of the ecological environment and human health; however, excess anions can cause serious ecological and environment problems. Therefore, the detection and removal of excess anions in aqueous solution is not only a technological problem but also crucial for environmental protection. Herein, a set of water-soluble pyrene-based cationic fluorophores were synthesized, which exhibit high sensitivity for the detection of the anions BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- via electrostatic interactions. Such fluorescent probes exhibit "turn-on" emission characteristics even at low concentrations of anions due to anion-π+ interactions. Moreover, these fluorescence probes act as efficient precipitating agents for the removal of the BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- anions from an aqueous environment. This work opens up new avenues for future research on pyrene-based fluorophores as turn-on fluorescence probes for anion detection and as excellent precipitating agents in environmental settings.

Zn(II)-Coordination Complex(s) from Chiral Bisamides of L-Phenylalanine: Nanoscale-Based Biological Applications and Metallogelation

Three 3-pyridyl-containing small organic bisamide molecules attached with innocent L-phenylalanine (PHE) side chain as building blocks and positional isomeric toluoyl terminals (PME, MME, and OME) have rationally been designed and synthesized for developing a new series of ZnII-coordination complexes. One of the unique molecular frameworks, having two hydrogen bond-equipped monodentate metal-coordinating sites and biologically potent chiral PHE moiety, was combined with ZnII halide salts under various conditions to produce the coordination complexes (CC1-CC7), thoroughly characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD) technique. Maintaining the similar component ratios of acquired CCs in 1:1 DMSO-water produced low-molecular weight metallogels (LMWGs) of PME/MME as envisaged from a rheology- and crystal engineering-based structural rationale. A structure-property correlation from the basis of PXRD of the bulk and xerogels and SXRD data of the isolated single crystals of reaction products clearly supports the crystal engineering-based design strategy based on which the metallogels are prepared. Hand-ground nanoscale ZnCl2-based coordination complex CC1 of PME was also studied for cytotoxicity (HEK-293 cell line) and anticancer activities (B16-F10 cell line) in the MTT assay.

Phenylalanine conjugated supramolecular hydrogels developed from the mafenide and flurbiprofen multidrug for biological applications

A well-known nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), flurbiprofen (FLR), was first conjugated individually with two naturally occurring amino acids such as L-phenylalanine (PHE) and L-alanine (ALA). These covalent amidic bioconjugates were further reacted individually with mafenide (a drug for treating burn wounds) and amantadine (an antiviral drug) to develop primary ammonium monocarboxylate (PAM) salts. Interestingly, both the PHE-containing multidrug salts exhibited significant gelation ability with various solvents including biologically potent water or methyl salicylate (MS). The isolated hydrogel (HG) as well as all the organogels obtained from multidrug gelators were extensively characterized by dynamic rheology and rheoreversibility studies. The hydrogel of FLR·PHE·MAF and MS gels of FLR·PHE·AMN/FLR·AMN were also selectively characterized by table-top and FEG-TEM analyses. The temperature-dependent ¹H-NMR spectroscopy of the selected HG further provided insights into the gelation mechanism and the only isolated single-crystal of the weakly diffracted gelator FLR·AMN also revealed the presence of 1D hydrogen-bonded networks. The pure hydrogelator FLR·PHE·MAF salt (which is also an ambidextrous gelator) was found to be promising in both mechanical (rheoreversible) and biological applications and was found to be effective in cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, anti-cancer activity (MTT and cell migration assay), antibacterial response (zone inhibition, turbidity, INT, and resazurin assay) and haemolysis studies.

Recent advances in the development of europium(III) and terbium(III)-based luminescent supramolecular metallogels

In the recent past, special attention has been paid to the development of metallogels as novel luminescent materials from rationally designed gelators with lanthanide ions, especially europium (Eu(III)) and terbium (Tb(III)) metal ions. Lanthanide (Ln(III)) based metallogels possess various useful properties with an extensive range of applications in the field of advanced materials, and electronic and bio-technologies. Lanthanide ions in coordination with appropriate sensitizer ligands can reproduce metal-based optical, redox, and electronic properties in soft gel materials. The optical properties of the luminescent Ln(III) based metallogels can be tuned over the complete visible spectrum (400-750 nm) including the generation of white light by mixing both Eu(III) and Tb(III) with the ligand in various stoichiometric ratios. Additionally, the dynamic nature of the lanthanide-ligand (Ln-N) coordination bond allows the Ln(III) based metallogels to respond to various external stimuli. Luminescent self-healing supramolecular gels using organic ligands as 'hosts' and Ln(III) ions as 'guests' are also a current topic of research interest. In this review, we discuss and summarize some selected recent examples of newly developed luminescent Eu(III) and Tb(III) based supramolecular metallogels with potential applications in the fields of optoelectronic devices, stimuli responsiveness, self-healing, luminescent films, and sensors.

Recent Advances in Stimuli-Responsive Metallogels

Recently, stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels have received significant attention because their properties can be modulated through external stimuli such as heat, light, electricity, magnetic fields, mechanical stress, pH, ions, chemicals and enzymes. Among these gels, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels have shown promising applications in material science because of their fascinating redox, optical, electronic and magnetic properties. In this review, research progress on stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels in recent years is systematically summarized. According to external stimulus sources, stimuli-responsive supramolecular metallogels, including chemical, physical and multiple stimuli-responsive metallogels, are discussed separately. Moreover, challenges, suggestions and opportunities regarding the development of novel stimuli-responsive metallogels are presented. We believe the knowledge and inspiration gained from this review will deepen the current understanding of stimuli-responsive smart metallogels and encourage more scientists to provide valuable contributions to this topic in the coming decades.

Supramolecular Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Hydrogel Based on Hexamethyl Cucurbit[5]uril for Cell Imaging

The host-guest interaction between hexamethyl cucurbit[5]uril (HmeQ[5]) and 1,4-diaminobenzene (DB) was investigated, and a new low-molecular-weight supramolecular gel was prepared by a simple heating/mixing cooling method. The structure and properties of the supramolecular gel were characterized. Results revealed that DB molecules did not enter the cavity of HmeQ[5] and that hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl group at the HmeQ[5] port and the DB amino groups, together with dipole-dipole interactions and outer wall interactions, were the main driving forces for the formation of the supramolecular gel. The HmeQ[5]/DB gel system exhibits temperature sensitivity. The phosphor 6-bromo-2-naphthol (BrNp) was embedded in the gel to give the gel fluorescent phosphorescence double emission. The double emission ability at room temperature can be attributed to the ordered microstructure of the supramolecular gel, which effectively avoids the nonradiative transition of BrNp. Meanwhile, HmeQ[5]/DB-BrNp has good biocompatibility and low biotoxicity, which is compatible with HeLa cells to achieve cytoplasmic staining of HeLa in the red channel. The supramolecular gels constructed by this supramolecular assembly strategy not only have good temperature sensitivity but also extend the application of Q[n]s in biomedical fields.

Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Supramolecular Gels Based on Pyridyl-N-oxide Amides

The nature of functional groups and their relative position and orientation play an important role in tuning the gelation properties of stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels. In this work, we synthesized and characterized mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)nicotinamide (L₁-L₃). The gelation properties of these N-oxide compounds were compared with the reported isomeric counterpart mono-/bis-pyridyl-N-oxide compounds of N-(4-pyridyl)isonicotinamide. Hydrogels obtained with L₁ and L₃ were thermally and mechanically more stable than the corresponding isomeric counterparts. The surface morphology of the xerogels of di-N-oxides (L₃ and diNO) obtained from the water was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed that the relative position of N-oxide moieties did not have a prominent effect on the gel morphology. The solid-state structural analysis was performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction to understand the key mechanism in gel formation. The versatile nature of N-oxide moieties makes these gels highly responsive toward an external stimulus, and the stimuli-responsive behavior of the gels in water and aqueous mixtures was studied in the presence of various salts. We studied the effect of various salts on the gelation behavior of the hydrogels, and the results indicated that the salts could induce gelation in L₁ and L₃ below the minimum gelator concentration of the gelators. The mechanical properties were evaluated by rheological experiments, indicating that the modified compounds displayed enhanced gel strength in most cases. Interestingly, cadmium chloride formed supergelator at a very low concentration (0.7 wt% of L₃), and robust hydrogels were obtained at higher concentrations of L₃. These results show that the relative position of N-oxide moieties is crucial for the effective interaction of the gelator with salts/ions resulting in LMWGs with tunable properties.

A comparative performance evaluation of cephalosporin's drugs for fluoride recognition

In this manuscript, readily available cephalosporin's drugs cefuroxime axetil (L1) cefpdoxime proxetil (L2), and cefditoren pivoxil (L3) possess dihydrothiazine ring as signaling unit, and -NH groups as the binding site were used for the sensing of fluoride (F^-) ions. In the presence of F^-, the drug selectively portrayed a naked-eye detectable color change from colorless. The binding constant of 1:1 stoichiometric complex of L1, L2, and L3 with F^- was found to be 2.36 × 10⁴ M^-1, 2.44 × 10³ M^-1 and 1.02 × 10⁴ M^-1 respectively. The lowest detection limit (LOD) of F^- was found to be 11 µM (209 ppb) with drug L1 and L2. The binding mechanism of the drug with F^- was studied by ¹H and ¹⁹F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral titration, electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. The presence of F^- was monitored in various spiked water and Colgate toothpaste samples. Overall, cephalosporin's drug demonstrates a promising potential for the detection of F^- ions in the semi-aqueous phase.

Structural insights into self-assembly of a slow-evolving and mechanically robust supramolecular gel via time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering

The supramolecular assembly process is a widespread phenomenon found in both synthetically engineered and naturally occurring systems, such as colloids, liquid crystals and micelles. However, a basic understanding of the evolution of self-assembly processes over time remains elusive, primarily owing to the fast kinetics involved in these processes and the complex nature of the various non-covalent interactions operating simultaneously. With the help of a slow-evolving supramolecular gel derived from a urea-based gelator, we aim to capture the different stages of the self-assembly process commencing from nucleation. In particular, we are able to study the self-assembly in real time using time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) at length scales ranging from approximately 30 Å to 250 Å. Systems with and without sonication are compared simultaneously, to follow the different kinetic paths involved in these two cases. Time-dependent NMR, morphological and rheological studies act complementarily to the SANS data at sub-micron and bulk length scales. A hollow columnar formation comprising of gelator monomers arranged radially along the long axis of the fiber and solvent in the core is detected at the very early stage of the self-assembly process. While sonication promotes uniform growth of fibers and fiber entanglement, the absence of such a stimulus helps extensive bundle formation at a later stage and at the microscopic domain, making the gel system mechanically robust. The results of the present work provide a thorough understanding of the self-assembly process and reveal a path for fine-tuning such growth processes for applications such as the cosmetics industry, 3D printing ink development and paint industry.

Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly: From Discrete Supramolecular Self-Assemblies to Functional Soft Materials

Anion templated assembly of supramolecular systems has been extensively explored in previous reports, whereas anions serve only as an auxiliary and spectator role. With the development of anion coordination chemistry in recent years, anion coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) has emerged as a new strategy for the construction of supramolecular self-assemblies. Anions are proved to exist as the main actors in the construction of supramolecular architectures, i. e., serve as the coordination center. This Review will focus on the recent progress in anion-coordination-driven assembly of discrete supramolecular architectures, such as helicates, polyhedrons and polygons, and the various applications of 'aniono'-systems. At the end of this Review, we highlight current challenges and opportunities for future research of anion-coordination-driven self-assembly.

Anion-Induced Reversible Actuation of Squaramide-Crosslinked Polymer Gels

Supramolecular anion binding to squaramide crosslinkers in poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) gel networks enhances swelling and allows reversible chemically driven actuation. The volume swelling ratio of the gels is shown to depend on both the type of anion and its concentration. ¹H NMR and UV-vis titrations with the squaramide crosslinkers reveal a relationship between anion binding affinity and the concentration-dependent swelling behavior. Gel swelling is shown to be reversible, and by embedding a solid support into rod-shaped gels, soft actuators are fabricated that undergo forward and backward bending motion in response to changing anion concentration. The swelling and bending process, which is accompanied by intense green coloration of the gel, is achieved by using only low amounts of crosslinker. This macroscopic actuation achieved by anion binding to specific molecular entities in the polymer network will open new opportunities in the field of chemically responsive materials.

Unravelling the Supramolecular Driving Forces in the Formation of CO2-Responsive Pseudopeptidic Low-Molecular-Weight Hydrogelators

A new family of C₂-symmetric pseudopeptides with a high functional density for supramolecular interactions has been synthetized through the attachment of four amino acid subunits to a diamino aliphatic spacer. The resulting open-chain compounds present remarkable properties as low-molecular-weight hydrogelators. The self-assembled 3D networks were characterized by SEM analyses, observing regular nanofibres with 80–100 nm diameters. Spectroscopic and molecular modelling experiments revealed the presence of strong synergic effects between the H-bonding and π–π interactions, with the best results obtained for the homoleptic tetra-pseudopeptide derived from l-Phe. In addition, these bioinspired hydrogels possessed pH- and CO₂-responsive sol–gel transitions. The formation of ammonium carbamate derivatives in the presence of carbon dioxide led to a detrimental change in its adequate self-assembly. CO₂ desorption temperatures of ca. 70 °C were assigned to the thermodynamically favoured recovery of the supramolecular gel.

Rutin-Loaded Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogel for Anti-Inflammation

An active flavonoid compound rutin was incorporated into a guanosine phenylborate hydrogel (GBR) by a stimuli-responsive borate ester linkage for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The components and morphology of the drug delivery system were characterized by NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and AFM. Rheological measurements revealed the required injectability and self-healing ability, which contributed to its application in rectal administration. The cell assays proved the excellent compatibility and safety of the system, and a possible pathway to form multicellular aggregates. In vitro drug-release studies showed that the hydrogel exhibited good stability in physiological medium, and the drug was almost completely released (more than 90 wt % after 24 h of incubation) in acidic pH and excessive ROS-containing medium, realizing the dual-responsive release of pH/ROS. In vivo activities of the GBR hydrogel showed higher therapeutic efficacy than free rutin in a colitis mice model, and it could significantly inhibit overexpressed inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and IL-6. Degradation studies of the hydrogel provided further evidence for the safety of its in vivo application. The work provided a simple strategy to prepare a G-quadruplex drug carrier, which was expected to achieve multi-drug delivery.

Triarylamine Enriched Organostannoxane Drums: Synthesis, Optoelectrochemical Properties, Association Studies, and Gelation Behavior

The straightforward synthesis of three organotin clusters endowed with six triarylamine-based moieties is reported herein. The optoelectronic properties of the molecules, as well as their ability to form gels, were investigated. The association ability of the compounds was studied as well by means of variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The optimization of the geometry of the compounds has been performed and compared to the X-ray diffraction of the crystals. The results obtained through this comparison are useful for the explanation of their different gelation behaviors. In fact, organostannoxane drum 1 exhibits a strong ability to form organized supramolecular structures by means of a number of noncovalent short contacts that finally yield luminescent organogels in aromatic solvents.

Anion-Responsive Fluorescent Supramolecular Gels

Three novel bis-urea fluorescent low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) based on the tetraethyl diphenylmethane spacer—namely, L1, L2, and L3, bearing indole, dansyl, and quinoline units as fluorogenic fragments, respectively, are able to form gel in different solvents. L2 and L3 gel in apolar solvents such as chlorobenzene and nitrobenzene. Gelator L1 is able to gel in the polar solvent mixture DMSO/H₂O (H₂O 15% v/v). This allowed the study of gel formation in the presence of anions as a third component. An interesting anion-dependent gel formation was observed with fluoride and benzoate inhibiting the gelation process and H₂PO₄⁻, thus causing a delay of 24 h in the gel formation. The interaction of L1 with the anions in solution was clarified by ¹H-NMR titrations and the differences in the cooperativity of the two types of NH H-bond donor groups (one indole NH and two urea NHs) on L1 when binding BzO⁻ or H₂PO₄⁻ were taken into account to explain the inhibition of the gelation in the presence of BzO⁻. DFT calculations corroborate this hypothesis and, more importantly, demonstrate considering a trimeric model of the L1 gel that BzO⁻ favours its disruption into monomers inhibiting the gel formation.

Supramolecular Hydrogels Developed from Mafenide and Indomethacin as a Plausible Multidrug Self-Delivery System as Antibacterial and Anti-inflammatory Topical Gels

Following a structural rationale, a series of simple organic salts derived from mafenide (a drug for treating burn wounds) and n-alkyl carboxylic acids (Me-(CH₂)_n-COOH; n = 1-3, 10-15) and various nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely, indomethacin (IND), diclofenac (DIC), meclofenamic acid (MEC), tolfenamic acid (TOL), and flufenamic acid (FLU) (designated as salts 1-14, respectively) were synthesized as potential hydrogelators. Gelation studies revealed that mafenide n-alkyl carboxylates with n = 11-14, i.e., salts 5-8, and the indomethacin salt of mafenide, i.e., salt 10, were hydrogelators. The corresponding hydrogels, namely, 5(HG)-8(HG) and 10(HG), were characterized by table-top and dynamic rheology and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Single-crystal structures of the nongelator salts 1-3 and the gelator salt 10 were determined by X-ray diffraction. The results obtained from various studies, which included the solubility, biostability, biocompatibility (MTT assay), and anti-inflammatory (PGE₂ assay) response of salt 10, the antibacterial response (zone inhibition assay) of salt 10, its components, and 10(HG), and the release of salt 10 in vitro from the corresponding hydrogel bed to the bulk solvent at 37 °C in 24 h, suggested their plausible use in developing multidrug-derived topical hydrogels for self-delivery applications.

Manipulating Assemblies in Metallosupramolecular Gels, Driven by Isomeric Ligands, Metal Coordination, and Adaptive Binary Gelator Systems

Metallosupramolecular gel (MSG) is a unique combination of metal-ligand coordination chemistry and supramolecular gel chemistry with extraordinary adaptivity and softness. Such materials find broad uses in industry, pharmaceutical and biomedical sectors, and in technology generation among many others. Pyridyl-appended bis(urea) gelator systems have been extensively studied as potential MSG-forming materials in the presence of various metal ions. The previous molecular engineering approaches depicted competitive intermolecular and intramolecular binding modes involving urea and pyridyl groups and further fine-tuned by the presence of various molecular spacers. In those studies, formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding among urea moieties to form urea tape was found to be the key factor in one-dimensional assembly and gel formation. In the present study, we show how two isomeric pyridyl-appended bis(urea) ligands can be designed appropriately to essentially eliminate the interference of competitive factors, leaving the intermolecular urea assembly practically unaffected even in the presence of metal ions. We found that one of the two ligands (L2) and the mixed ligand (L1 + L2) assemblies formed gel in the presence and absence of various metal ions. A metal ion with a linear coordination geometry significantly strengthened the gels. Moreover, an inherently weak L1 + L2 assembly appears to be more adaptive in accommodating larger metal ions especially with nonlinear coordination geometry preferences. Small-angle neutron scattering and rheological, spectroscopic, and morphological characterizations, collectively, capture a detailed interplay among ligand assembly, metal-ligand coordination, and adaptivity, driven by the pure versus mixed ligand assemblies. The knowledge gathered from the present study would be highly beneficial in engineering the metallosupramolecular polymeric assemblies toward their functional applications.

A Review on Synthesis Methods of Phyllosilicate- and Graphene-Filled Composite Hydrogels

This review discusses, in brief, the various synthetic methods of two widely-used nanofillers; phyllosilicate and graphene. Both are 2D fillers introduced into hydrogel matrices to achieve mechanical robustness and water uptake behavior. Both the fillers are inserted by physical and chemical gelation methods where most of the chemical gelation, i.e., covalent approaches, results in better physical properties compared to their physical gels. Physical gels occur due to supramolecular assembly, van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic associations, and H-bonding. For chemical gelation, in situ radical triggered gelation mostly occurs.
