Shape control of platinum and palladium nanoparticles for catalysis

Two-dimensional Janus monolayers SPtAZ2 (A = Si and Ge; Z = N, P, and As): insight into their photocatalytic properties via first-principles calculations

As a derivative of the two-dimensional material family, two-dimensional Janus materials have garnered widespread attention in recent years. Consequently, in this work, we systematically investigated the stability, electronic properties, photocatalytic properties, optical properties, and carrier mobility of SPtAZ2 (A = Si and Ge; Z = N, P, and As) monolayers using first-principles calculations. In the equilibrium state, we identified four stable structures that exhibited the properties of indirect band gap semiconductors using the HSE06 hybrid functional. Through the exploration of the photocatalytic and optical properties of these four stable structures, we observed that SPtSiN2, SPtSiP2, and SPtGeAs2 monolayers possess favorable band edge positions, high solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (up to 30.74%), and light absorption efficiency, thus endowing these three structures with commendable photocatalytic and light absorption performance. We additionally calculated the carrier mobility of these three structures and identified significant differences in electron and hole mobilities in the same direction, facilitating the effective separation of electrons and holes. Finally, we explored the effects of biaxial strain on the electronic properties, photocatalysis, and light absorption of stable SPtAZ2 monolayers. Our research results not only expand the 2D Janus material family, but also successfully predict a type of photocatalyst capable of utilizing visible light for overall water splitting.

Two-dimensional SPdAZ2 (A = Si, Ge; Z = N, P, As) monolayers with an intrinsic electric field for high-performance photocatalysis

Two-dimensional materials exhibiting exceptional photocatalytic properties and a low carrier recombination rate have garnered significant attention. However, such attributes are relatively scarce among conventional two-dimensional materials. Two-dimensional Janus materials, owing to their intrinsic electric field, hold substantial promise in the realm of photocatalysis. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the electronic, optical and photocatalytic properties, as well as the carrier mobility of SPdAZ2 (A = Si, Ge; Z = N, P, As) monolayers employing first-principles calculations. Employing the HSE06 hybrid density functional, we discovered that all six structures exhibit semiconductor characteristics with indirect band gaps under equilibrium conditions. Notably, SPdSiP2, SPdSiAs2, and SPdGeP2 monolayers displayed advantageous band edge positions, facilitating effective photocatalytic water decomposition. Furthermore, we computed the carrier mobility of SPdAZ2 monolayers, revealing significant variations in the electron and hole mobility along the same direction, which enhances the effective separation of electrons and holes. Finally, we explored the impact of biaxial strain and an applied electric field on the electronic properties, photocatalysis, and light absorption of SPdAZ2 monolayers. These compelling features underscore the broad potential applications of SPdAZ2 (A = Si, Ge; Z = N, P, As) monolayers in the realm of photocatalytic water decomposition.

Formation and Growth of Atomic Scale Seeds of Au Nanoparticle in the Nanospace of an Organic Cage Molecule

Seed-mediated growth has been widely used to synthesize noble metal nanoparticles with controlled size and shape. Although it is becoming possible to directly observe the nucleation process of metal atoms at the single atom level by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it is challenging to control the formation and growth of seeds with only a few metal atoms in homogeneous solution systems. This work reports site-selective formation and growth of atomic scale seeds of the Au nanoparticle in a nanospace of an organic cage molecule. We synthesized a cage molecule with amines and phenols, which were found to both capture and reduce Au(III) ions to spontaneously form the atomic scale seeds containing Au(0) in the nanospace. The growth reaction of the atomic scale seeds afforded Au nanoparticles with an average diameter of 2.0±0.2 nm, which is in good agreement with the inner diameter of the cage molecule.

Pt cocatalyst morphology on semiconductor nanorod photocatalysts enhances charge trapping and water reduction

In photocatalysis, metal-semiconductor hybrid structures have been proposed for ideal photocatalytic systems. In this study, we investigate the effect of morphology and surface nature of Pt cocatalysts on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity in Pt-tipped CdSe nanorods. Three distinct morphologies of Pt cocatalysts were synthesized and employed as visible light photocatalysts. The rough tips exhibit the highest activity, followed by the round and cubic tips. Kinetic investigations using transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that the cubic tips exhibit lower charge-separated states feasible for reacting with water and water reduction rates due to their defectless surface facets. In contrast, the rough tips show a similar charge-separation value but a two-fold higher surface reaction rate than the round tips, resulting in a significant enhancement of hydrogen evolution. These findings highlight the importance of rational design on metal cocatalysts in addition to the main semiconductor bodies for maximizing photocatalytic activities.

Synthesis of nanoparticles via microfluidic devices and integrated applications

In recent years, nanomaterials have attracted the research intervention of experts in the fields of catalysis, energy, biomedical testing, and biomedicine with their unrivaled optical, chemical, and biological properties. From basic metal and oxide nanoparticles to complex quantum dots and MOFs, the stable preparation of various nanomaterials has always been a struggle for researchers. Microfluidics, as a paradigm of microscale control, is a remarkable platform for online stable synthesis of nanomaterials with efficient mass and heat transfer in microreactors, flexible blending of reactants, and precise control of reaction conditions. We describe the process of microfluidic preparation of nanoparticles in the last 5 years in terms of microfluidic techniques and the methods of microfluidic manipulation of fluids. Then, the ability of microfluidics to prepare different nanomaterials, such as metals, oxides, quantum dots, and biopolymer nanoparticles, is presented. The effective synthesis of some nanomaterials with complex structures and the cases of nanomaterials prepared by microfluidics under extreme conditions (high temperature and pressure), the compatibility of microfluidics as a superior platform for the preparation of nanoparticles is demonstrated. Microfluidics has a potent integration capability to combine nanoparticle synthesis with real-time monitoring and online detection, which significantly improves the quality and production efficiency of nanoparticles, and also provides a high-quality ultra-clean platform for some bioassays.

Manipulating morphology and composition in colloidal heterometallic nanopods and nanodendrites

Branched Pt nanoparticles represent an exciting class of nanomaterials with high surface areas suitable for applications in electrocatalysis. Introducing a second metal can enhance performance and reduce cost. External factors such as capping agents and temperature have been used to offer insights into nanopod formation and to encourage their kinetic evolution. More recently, nanodendrites have been reported, though synthesis has generally been empirical; making controlled variation of morphology while maintaining bimetallic composition an elusive target. We report the combination of Pt with Fe under a range of conditions, yielding individually bimetallic nanoparticles whose construction sheds new light on nanopod and/or nanodendrite formation. Fine control of metal precursor reduction through modulating capping agents, reagents, and temperature initially directs nanopod synthesis. Morphology control is retained while composition is then varied from Pt-rich to Pt-poor. Additionally, conditions are identified that promote the collision-based branching of nanopod arms. This allows synthesis to be redirected for the selective growth of compositionally controlled nanodendrites in predictable fashion.

Solvated electron-induced synthesis of cyclodextrin-coated Pd nanoparticles: mechanistic, catalytic, and anticancer studies

Herein, using in situ generated solvated electrons in the reaction media, a highly time-efficient, one-pot green approach has been employed to synthesize palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with a molecular assembly of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD). The appearance of a shoulder peak at 280 nm in the UV-Vis absorption spectra indicated the formation of Pd NPs, which was further confirmed from their cubic phase XRD pattern. The nanomorphology varied considerably as a function of the dose rate, wherein sphere-shaped NPs (average size ∼ 7.6 nm) were formed in the case of high dose rate electron-beam assisted synthesis, while nanoflakes self-assembled to form nanoflower-shaped morphologies in a γ-ray mediated approach involving a low dose rate. The formation kinetics of NPs was investigated by pulse radiolysis which revealed the formation of Pd-based transients by the solvated electron-induced reaction. Importantly, no interference of α-CD was observed in the kinetics of the transient species, rather it played the role of a morphology directing agent in addition to a biocompatible stabilizing agent. The catalytic studies revealed that the morphology of the NPs has a significant effect on the reduction efficiency of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. Another important highlight of this work is the demonstration of the morphology-dependent anticancer efficacy of Pd NPs against lung and brain cancer cells. Notably, flower-shaped Pd NPs exhibited significantly higher cancer cell killing as compared to spherical NPs, while being less toxic towards normal lung fibroblasts. Nonetheless, these findings show the promising potential of Pd NPs in anticancer treatment.

Multimode Electron Tomography Sheds Light on Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of Complex Metal-Based Nanoparticles

Electron tomography has become a cornerstone technique for the visualization of nanoparticle morphology in three dimensions. However, to obtain in-depth information about a nanoparticle beyond surface faceting and morphology, different electron microscopy signals must be combined. The most notable examples of these combined signals include annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) with different collection angles and the combination of ADF-STEM with energy-dispersive X-ray or electron energy loss spectroscopies. Here, the experimental and computational development of various multimode tomography techniques in connection to the fundamental materials science challenges that multimode tomography has been instrumental to overcoming are summarized. Although the techniques can be applied to a wide variety of compositions, the study is restricted to metal and metal oxide nanoparticles for the sake of simplicity. Current challenges and future directions of multimode tomography are additionally discussed.

Hybrid Pd-Nanoparticles within Polymeric Network in Selective Hydrogenation of Alkynols: Influence of Support Porosity

This work is addressing the selective hydrogenation of alkynols over hybrid catalysts containing Pd-nanoparticles, within newly synthesized hyper-cross-linked polystyrenes (HPS). Alkynols containing C₅, C₁₀, and C₂₀ with a terminal triple bond, which are structural analogues or direct semi-products of fragrant substances and fat-soluble vitamins, have been studied. Selective hydrogenation was carried out in a batch mode (ambient hydrogen pressure, at 90 °C, in toluene solvent), using hybrid Pd catalysts with low metal content (less than 0.2 wt.%). The microporous and mesoporous HPS were both synthesized and used as supports in order to address the influence of porosity. Synthesized catalysts were shown to be active and selective: in the case of C₅, hydrogenation selectivity to the target product was more than 95%, at close to complete alkynol conversion. Mesoporous catalysts have shown some advantages in hydrogenation of long-chain alkynols.

Palladium nanoparticles as emerging pollutants from motor vehicles: An in-depth review on distribution, uptake and toxicological effects in occupational and living environment

Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) play an integral role in motor vehicles as the primary vehicle exhaust catalyst (VEC) for tackling environmental pollution. Automobiles equipped with Pd-based catalytic converters were introduced in the mid-1970s and ever since the demand for Pd has steadily increased due to stringent emission standards imposed in many developed and developing countries. However, at the same time, the increasing usage of Pd in VECs has led to the release of nano-sized Pd particles in the environment, thus, emerging as a new source of environmental pollution. The present reports in the literature have shown gradual increasing levels of Pd particles in different urban environmental compartments and internalization of Pd particles in living organisms such as plants, aquatic species and animals. Occupational workers and the general population living in urban areas and near major highways are the most vulnerable as they may be chronically exposed to PdNPs. Risk assessment studies have shown acute and chronic toxicity exerted by PdNPs in both in-vitro and in-vivo models but the underlying mechanism of PdNPs toxicity is still not fully understood. The review intends to provide readers with an in-depth account on the demand and supply of Pd, global distribution of PdNPs in various environmental matrices, their migration and uptake by living species and lastly, their health risks, so as to serve as a useful reference to facilitate further research and development for safe and sustainable technology.

AuCo nanoparticles: ordering, magnetisation, and morphology trends predicted by DFT

The rapid development of applications relying on magnetism at the nanoscale has put a spotlight on nanoparticles with novel morphologies that are associated with enhanced electronic and magnetic properties. In this quest, nanoalloys combining highly magnetic cobalt and weakly reactive gold could offer many application-specific advantages, such as strong magnetic anisotropy. In the present study, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to provide a systematic overview of the size- and morphology-dependence of the energetic order and magnetic properties of AuCo nanoparticles up to 2.5 nm in diameter. The core-shell icosahedron was captured as the most favourable morphology, showing a small preference over the core-shell decahedron. However, the magnetic properties (total magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy) were found to be significantly improved within the L1₀ ordered structures, even in comparison to monometallic Co nanoparticles. Atom-resolved charges and orbital moments accessed through the DFT analysis of the electronic level properties permitted insight into the close interrelation between the AuCo nanoparticle morphology and their magnetism. These results are expected to assist in the design of tailored magnetic AuCo nanoalloys for specific applications.

Pd-Pd/PdO as active sites on intercalated graphene oxide modified by diaminobenzene: fabrication, catalysis properties, synergistic effects, and catalytic mechanism

Pd–Pd/PdO nanoclusters well dispersed on intercalated graphene oxide (GO) (denoted as GO@PPD–Pd) were prepared and characterized. GO@PPD–Pd exhibited high catalytic activity (a TOF value of 60 705 h⁻¹) during the Suzuki coupling reaction, and it could be reused at least 6 times. The real active centre was Pd(200)–Pd(200)/PdO(110, 102). A change in the Pd facets on the surface of PdO was a key factor leading to deactivation, and the aggregation and loss of active centres was also another important reason. The catalytic mechanism involved heterogeneous catalysis, showing that the catalytic processes occurred at the interface, including substrate adsorption, intermediate formation, and product desorption. The real active centres showed enhanced negative charge due to the transfer of electrons from the carrier and ligands, which could effectively promote the oxidative addition reaction, and Pd(200) and the heteroconjugated Pd/PdO interface generated in situ also participated in the coupling process, synergistically boosting activity. Developed GO@PPD–Pd was a viable heterogeneous catalyst that may have practical applications owing to its easy synthesis and stability, and this synergistic approach can be utilized to develop other transition-metal catalysts.

Pd(200) and the Pd(200)/PdO(102, 110) interface generated in situ participated in coupling reactions via a synergistic effect, boosting the catalytic activity to a high level.

Atomic-Strain Mapping of High-Index Facets in Late-Transition-Metal Nanoparticles for Electrocatalysis

Although high-index facets (HIF) endows excellent catalytic activity through undercoordinated sites with strain effect, current characterizations techniques still cannot unravel the detailed strain distributions to understand the origins of electroactivity. Nevertheless, theoretical principles to quantify the structural features and their effects on catalytic activity improvements on HIFs are still lacking, which renders the experimental efforts laborious. In this work, we explore the quantification of surface structural features and establish a database of atomic strain distributions for the late-transition metal HIF nanoparticle models. The surface reactivities of the nanoparticles have been examined by adsorption energy calculations and their correlations with structural features are observed. Our proposed theoretical principles on surface characterizations of high-index facets nanomaterials will promote the design and synthesis of efficient transition metal based electrocatalysts.

In Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Studies on the Growth Mechanism of Anisotropic Platinum Nanoparticles

Shape-controlled platinum nanoparticles exhibit extremely high oxygen reduction activity. Platinum nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of a platinum complex in the presence of a soft template formed by organic surfactants in oleylamine. The formation of platinum nanoparticles was investigated using in situ small-angle X-ray scattering experiments. Time-resolved measurements revealed that different particle shapes appeared during the reaction. After the nuclei were generated, they grew into anisotropic rod-shaped nanoparticles. The shape, size, number density, reaction yield, and specific surface area of the nanoparticles were successfully determined using small-angle X-ray scattering profiles. Anisotropic platinum nanoparticles appeared at a low reaction temperature (∼100 °C) after a short reaction time (∼30 min). The aspect ratio of these platinum nanoparticles was correlated with the local packing motifs of the surfactant molecules and their stability. Our findings suggest that the interfacial structure between the surfactant and platinum nuclei can be important as a controlling factor for tailoring the aspect ratio of platinum nanoparticles and further optimizing the fuel cell performance.

Construction of stable bio-Pd catalysts for environmental pollutant remediation

It has been reported that Pd nanoparticles were a little weak to bind to the dried microbial (yeast) surface, leading to the poor stability of the bio-supported catalysts. The objectives of the study are to construct stable Pd nanocatalysts supported on the dried yeast surface with the help of a tiny amount (<0.1 wt%) of reduced graphene oxide (Pd/yeast/rGO) and apply the catalysts in environmental pollutant remediation. The characterizations of the as-obtained Pd/yeast/rGO catalysts showed that reduced GO could cover Pd/yeast materials and prepare 15–21 nm Pd nanoparticles under acid and base media. The catalytic performance of the Pd/yeast/rGO catalyst was compared with that of control Pd/yeast catalysts without GO. The results revealed the kinetic constant K_app in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol of Pd/yeast/rGO catalysts could reach 3.6 × 10⁻² s⁻¹ without stirring during the reaction, which was 2.4 times higher than that of Pd/yeast catalysts, and the Pd/yeast/rGO catalysts kept a good stability even after being reused in seven cycles. Furthermore, the catalysts also showed quite good catalytic activities on CO oxidation and decolorization of dye methylene blue (MB). Thus, Pd/yeast/rGO catalysts were proven to be highly active and stable for environmental remediation and have the advantage that they can prevent the loss of noble metals and be prepared conveniently from discarded microorganisms.

Stable bio-supported Pd/yeast/rGO catalysts were prepared by covering with a tiny amount (<0.1 wt%) of GO based on a non-enzyme reduction method.

Engineering the morphology of palladium nanostructures to tune their electrocatalytic activity in formic acid oxidation reactions

Pd nanomaterials can be cheaper alternative catalysts for the electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) in fuel cells. The size and shape of the nanoparticles and crystal engineering can play a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic activities of Pd nanostructures. A systematic study on the effect of varying the morphology of Pd nanostructures on their catalytic activities for FAOR is reported here. Palladium nanoparticles (Pd_0D), nanowires (Pd_1D) and nanosheets (Pd_2D) could be synthesized by using swollen liquid crystals as 'soft' templates. Swollen liquid crystals are lyotropic liquid crystals that are formed from a quaternary mixture of a surfactant, cosurfactant, brine and Pd salt dissolved in oil. Pd_1D nanostructures exhibited 2.7 and 19 fold higher current density than Pd_0D and Pd_2D nanostructures in the FAOR. The Pd_1D nanostructure possess higher electrochemically active surface area (ECSA), better catalytic activity, stability, and lower impedance to charge transfer when compared to the Pd_0D and Pd_2D nanostructures. The presence of relatively higher amounts of crystal defects and enriched (100) crystal facets in the Pd_1D nanostructure were found to be the reasons for their enhanced catalytic activities.

From platinum atoms in molecules to colloidal nanoparticles: A review on reduction, nucleation and growth mechanisms

Platinum (Pt) is one of the most studied materials in catalysis today and considered for a wide range of applications: chemical synthesis, energy conversion, air treatment, water purification, sensing, medicine etc. As a limited and non-renewable resource, optimized used of Pt is key. Nanomaterial design offers multiple opportunities to make the most of Pt resources down to the atomic scale. In particular, colloidal syntheses of Pt nanoparticles are well documented and simple to implement, which accounts for the large interest in research and development. For further breakthroughs in the design of Pt nanomaterials, a deeper understanding of the intricate synthesis-structures-properties relations of Pt nanoparticles must be obtained. Understanding how Pt nanoparticles form from molecular precursors is both a challenging and rewarding area of investigation. It is directly relevant to develop improved Pt nanomaterials but is also a source of inspiration to design other precious metal nanostructures. Here, we review the current understanding of Pt nanoparticle formation. This review is aimed at readers with interest in Pt nanoparticles in general and their colloidal syntheses in particular. Readers with a strongest interest on the study of nanomaterial formation will find here the case study of Pt. The preferred model systems and characterization techniques used to perform the study of Pt nanoparticle syntheses are discussed. In light of recent achievements, further direction and areas of research are proposed.

An Integrated Electrochemistry Approach to the Design and Synthesis of Polyhedral Noble Metal Nanoparticles

The synthesis of shaped metal nanoparticles to meet the precise needs of emerging applications requires intentional synthetic design directed by fundamental chemical principles. We report an integrated electrochemistry approach to nanoparticle synthetic design that couples current-driven growth of metal nanoparticles on an electrode surface-in close analogy to standard colloidal synthesis-with electrochemical measurements of both electrochemical and colloidal nanoparticle growth. A simple chronopotentiometry method was used to translate an existing colloidal synthesis for corrugated palladium (Pd) nanoparticles to electrochemical growth on a glassy carbon electrode, with minimal modification to the growth solution. The electrochemical synthesis method was then utilized to produce large Pd icosahedra, a shape whose synthesis is challenging in a colloidal growth environment. This electrochemical synthesis for Pd icosahedra was used to develop a corresponding colloidal growth solution by tailoring a weak reducing agent to the measured potential profile of the electrochemical synthesis. Finally, measurements of colloidal syntheses were employed as guides for the directed design of electrochemical syntheses for Pd cubes and octahedra. Together, this work provides a cyclical approach to shaped nanoparticle design that allows for the optimization of nanoparticles grown via a colloidal approach with a chemical reducing agent or synthesized with an applied current on an electrode surface as well as subsequent bidirectional translation between the two methods. The enhanced chemical flexibility and direct tunability of this electrochemical method relative to combinatorial design of colloidal syntheses have the potential to accelerate the synthetic design process for noble metal nanoparticles with targeted morphologies.

The Effect of Shape-Controlled Pt and Pd Nanoparticles on Selective Catalytic Hydrodechlorination of Trichloroethylene

Tailoring the shape of nanoscale materials enables obtaining morphology-controlled surfaces exhibiting specific interactions with reactants during catalytic reactions. The specifics of nanoparticle surfaces control the catalytic performance, i.e., activity and selectivity. In this study, shape-controlled Platinum (Pt) and Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles with distinct morphology were produced, i.e., cubes and cuboctahedra for Pt and spheres and polyhedra/multiple-twins for Pd, with (100), (111 + 100), curved/stepped and (111) facets, respectively. These particles with well-tuned surfaces were subsequently deposited on a Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) support. The morphological characteristics of the particles were determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), while their adsorption properties were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of CO adsorbed at room temperature. The effect of the nanoparticle shape and surface structure on the catalytic performance in hydrodechlorination (HDCl) of trichloroethylene (TCE) was examined. The results show that nanoparticles with different surface orientations can be employed to affect selectivity, with polyhedral and multiply-twinned Pd exhibiting the best ethylene selectivity.

Synthesis of Citrate-Coated Penta-twinned Palladium Nanorods and Ultrathin Nanowires with a Tunable Aspect Ratio

Green and scalable methodologies for the preparation of metal nanoparticles with fine control of shape and size are of high interest in many areas including catalysis, nanomedicine, and nanodiagnostics. In this contribution, we describe a new synthetic method for the production of palladium (Pd) penta-twinned nanowires and nanorods utilizing sodium citrate, formic acid, ascorbic acid, and potassium bromide (KBr) in water, without the use of surfactants or polymers. The synthesis is green, fast, and without the need of complex setups. Interestingly, a microwave-assisted scale-up process has been developed. The combination of a synthetic protocol for seeds and the seed-mediated growth process allows us to synthesize nanorods and nanowires by modulating the concentration of KBr. The synthesized nanomaterials have been physicochemically characterized. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the nanorods and nanowires have a penta-twinned structure enclosed by {100} lateral facets. Moreover, the absence of sticky molecules or toxic byproducts guarantees the biocompatibility of the nanomaterials, while leaving the surface clean to perform enzymatic activities.

Membrane poration, wrinkling, and compression: deformations of lipid vesicles induced by amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles

Building upon our previous studies on interactions of amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles with glass-supported lipid bilayers, we study here how these Janus nanoparticles perturb the structural integrity and induce shape instabilities of membranes of giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). We show that 100 nm amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles disrupt GUV membranes at a threshold particle concentration similar to that in supported lipid bilayers, but cause drastically different membrane deformations, including membrane wrinkling, protrusion, poration, and even collapse of entire vesicles. By combining experiments with molecular simulations, we reveal how Janus nanoparticles alter local membrane curvature and collectively compress the membrane to induce shape transformation of vesicles. Our study demonstrates that amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles disrupt vesicle membranes differently and more effectively than uniform amphiphilic particles.

CO direct esterification to dimethyl oxalate and dimethyl carbonate: the key functional motifs for catalytic selectivity

The direct esterification of CO involves processes using CO as the starting material and ester chemicals as products. Dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) are two different products of the direct CO esterification reaction. However, the effective control of the reaction pathway and direct synthesis of DMO and DMC are challenging. In this review, we summarize the recent research progress on the direct esterification of CO to DMO/DMC and reveal the functional motifs responsible for the catalytic selectivity. Firstly, we discuss the microstructure of catalysts for the direct esterification of CO to DMO and DMC, including the valence state and the aggregate state of Pd. Then, the influence of characteristics of the support on the selectivity is analyzed. Importantly, the aggregate state of the active component, Pd is deemed as a vital functional motif for catalytic selectivity. The isolated Pd is conducive for the formation of DMC, while the aggregated Pd is beneficial for the formation of DMO. This review will provide rational guidance for the direct esterification of CO to DMO and DMC.

Bowl-Shaped Polydopamine Nanocapsules: Control of Morphology via Template-Free Synthesis

Synthesis of hollow polydopamine bowl-shaped nanoparticles (nanobowls), as small as 80 nm in diameter, via a one-pot template-free rapid method is reported. Addition of dopamine to a solution of 0.606 mg/mL tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane in an ethanol/water mixed solvent resulted in the formation of hollow spherical nanocapsules within 2 h. At longer reaction times, the formation of conventional solid nanospheres dominated the reaction. The wall thickness of the nanocapsules increased with increasing dopamine concentration in the reaction medium. Wall thickness was also influenced by oxygen availability during the reaction. Nanocapsules with thin walls were prone to collapse. When dried, over 90% of the nanocapsules with wall thickness on the order of 11 nm collapsed. Also, the degree of collapse of individual nanoparticles changed from complete to partial to no collapse as the wall thickness was increased. Varying the ethanol content affected the cavity size and overall dimension of the nanocapsules produced but did not result in a significant change to the wall thickness. A mechanism describing the formation of the nanocapsules and their subsequent collapse into nanobowls is presented. The shape-tunable nanobowls prepared through this green, rapid, and affordable method are expected to have applications in the biomedical, electrochemical, and catalytic fields.

Morphology control of nickel nanoparticles prepared in situ within silica aerogels produced by novel ambient pressure drying

Silica aerogels are low density solids with high surface area and high porosity which are ideal supports for catalyst materials. The main challenge in aerogel production is the drying process, which must remove liquid from the pores of the wet gel while maintaining the solid network. In this work, the synthesis of silica aerogels and nickel-doped silica aerogels by a low energy budget process is demonstrated. Silica aerogels are produced by ambient drying using ammonium bicarbonate, rather than a conventional low surface tension solvent. Heating dissociates the ammonium bicarbonate, so generating CO₂ and NH₃ within the pores of the wet gel which prevents pore collapse during drying. Nickel-doped aerogels were produced by reducing nickel ions within pre-synthesised silica aerogels. The morphology of the resulting nickel particles—spheres, wires and chains—could be controlled through an appropriate choice of synthesis conditions. Materials were characterized using nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction. The surface area of undoped aerogel is found to increase with the concentration of ammonium bicarbonate salts from 360 to 530 m² g⁻¹, and that of nickel-doped silica aerogel varies from 240 to 310 m² g⁻¹ with nickel doping conditions.

Genetically modified Pichia pastoris, a powerful resistant factory for gold and palladium bioleaching and nanostructure heavy metal biosynthesis

A metal-resistant engineered Pichia pastoris was developed here to fulfil the metal bioleaching in aqueous conditions. Parent and recombinant yeasts were grown in YPD medium containing different concentrations of ion metals. XRD, electron microscopy and particle size analyser were used for the characterisation and the nanoparticle analyses. The nanoparticle production kinetics were studied by ICP-OES. The cytotoxicity of nanoparticles was assayed against human cell lines. Media colours changed to a range from purplish-brown to grey during early fermentation stages. The maximum biosorption capacities were recorded 81.23 and 493.35 mg/g for gold and palladium in batch conditions, respectively. Various physical investigations proved monodispersed spherical nanoparticles around 100 nm in size. Pure palladium nanoparticles and PdCl₂ represented the least cytotoxic potency towards T47D and EPG85.257 cells. The results demonstrated that the genetically modified yeast is a cost-effective, high-throughput, robust, and facile system for metal biosorption.

Categorization of atomic mixing patterns in bimetallic nanoparticles by the energy competition

The superior properties of bimetallic nanoparticles are strongly related to their morphology. A better understanding of the morphological details would be the first step to design bimetallic nanoparticles for target applications. In this study, we discussed three possible categories of the atomic mixing patterns of bimetallic nanoparticles using the concept of competition between bond energy and surface energy. The categorization was confirmed with the thermodynamically stable structures of AgPt, AuPt, CuPt, PdPt, AgPd, AuPd, and CuPd obtained using Monte Carlo simulations. This work also proposed the phase diagrams of AuPt, CuPt, and PdPt nanoparticles, which displayed the details of atomic arrangements depending on the changes in size and atomic composition. The population in low-coordination sites and temperature effects were also intensively studied. The comprehensive understanding of these factors would facilitate the rational design and wide applications of bimetallic nanoparticles.

Denatured proteins as a novel template for the synthesis of well-defined, ultra-stable and water-soluble metal nanostructures for catalytic applications

Abstract

The templated synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles using biomass, such as proteins and polysaccharides, has generated great interest in recent years. In this work, we report on denatured proteins as a novel template for the preparation of water-soluble metal nanoparticles with excellent stability even after high speed centrifugation or storage at room temperature for one year. Different noble metal nanoparticles including spherical gold and platinum nanoparticles as well as gold nanoflowers are obtained using sodium borohydride or ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. The particle size can be controlled by the concentration of the template. These metal nanoparticles are further used as catalysts for the hydrogenation reaction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol. Especially, spherical gold nanoparticles with an average size of 2 nm show remarkable catalytic performance with a rate constant of 1.026 × 10− 2 L s− 1 mg− 1. These metal nanoparticles with tunable size and shape have great potential for various applications such as catalysis, energy, sensing, and biomedicine.

Synthesis, characterization and antifungal activities of eco-friendly palladium nanoparticles

Palladium is a versatile catalyst, but the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) is usually attained at a high temperature in the range of 160 °C to 200 °C using toxic reducing agents such as sodium borohydride. We report the synthesis of PdNPs using a low-cost and environmentally-friendly route at ambient temperatures. Quercetin diphosphate (QDP), a naturally-derived flavonoid, was employed as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The effect of temperature was optimized to produce perfectly spherical PdNP nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 microns in diameter. At relatively higher concentration of QDP, significantly smaller particles were produced with a size distribution of 1–7 nm. Perfectly spherical PdNP nanoparticles are a rare occurrence, especially under ambient room temperature conditions with fast reaction time. The formation of the nanoparticles was confirmed using UV-vis, TEM, EDS, and XRD. HRTEM demonstrated the lattice structure of the PdNPs. The synthesized PdNPs were also tested for their antifungal properties against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Fusarium oxysporum. Results showed that the size of the PdNPs played a critical role in their antifungal activity. However, for F. oxysporum, other factors beyond size could affect the antifungal activity including fine-scale, nutrient composition, and target organisms.

An Up-To-Date Review on Biomedical Applications of Palladium Nanoparticles

Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) have intrinsic features, such as brilliant catalytic, electronic, physical, mechanical, and optical properties, as well as diversity in shape and size. The initial researches proved that PdNPs have impressive potential for the development of novel photothermal agents, photoacoustic agents, antimicrobial/antitumor agents, gene/drug carriers, prodrug activators, and biosensors. However, very few studies have taken the benefit of the unique characteristics of PdNPs for applications in the biomedical field in comparison with other metals like gold, silver, or iron. Thus, this review aims to highlight the potential applications in the biomedical field of PdNPs. From that, the review provides the perceptual vision for the future development of PdNPs in this field.

Microplasma assisted synthesis of gold nanoparticle/graphene oxide nanocomposites and their potential application in SERS sensing

This is the first study on the deployment of direct current atmospheric pressure microplasma technique for the single step synthesis of gold nanoparticle/graphene oxide (AuNP/GO) nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and their formation mechanisms have been discussed in detail. Our AuNP/GO nanocomposites are highly biocompatible and have demonstrated surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties as compared to pure AuNPs and pure GO. Their potential as SERS substrate has been further demonstrated using probe molecules (methylene blue) at different concentrations.

Synthesis of low- and high-index faceted metal (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir, Rh) nanoparticles for improved activity and stability in electrocatalysis

Driven by the quest for future energy solution, faceted metal nanoparticles are being pursued as the next generation electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications. Thanks to recent advancement in solution phase synthesis, different low- and high-index facets on metal nanocrystals become accessible and are tested for specific electrocatalytic reactions. This minireview summarises the key approaches to prepare nanocrystals containing the most catalytically active platinum group metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, Ir and Rh) exposed with low- and high-index facets using solution phase synthesis. Electrocatalytic studies related to the different facets are highlighted to emphasise the importance of exposing facets for catalysing these reactions, namely oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), alcohol oxidation including methanol (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reactions (EOR), formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The future outlook discusses the challenges and opportunities for making electrocatalysts that are even more active and stable.

Synthesis, growth mechanisms, and applications of palladium-based nanowires and other one-dimensional nanostructures

Palladium-based nanostructures have attracted the attention of researchers due to their useful catalytic properties and unique ability to form hydrides, which finds application in hydrogen storage and hydrogen detection. Palladium-based nanowires have some inherent advantages over other Pd nanomaterials, combining high surface-to-volume ratio with good thermal and electron transport properties, and exposing high-index crystal facets that can have enhanced catalytic activity. Over the past two decades, both synthesis methods and applications of 1D palladium nanostructures have advanced greatly. In this review, we start by discussing different types of 1D palladium nanostructures before moving on to the different synthesis approaches that can produce them. Next, we discuss factors including kinetic vs. thermodynamic control of growth, oxidative etching, and surface passivation that affect palladium nanowire synthesis. We also review efforts to gain insight into growth mechanisms using different characterization tools. We discuss the effects of concentration of capping agents, reducing agents, metal halides, pH, and sacrificial oxidation on the growth of Pd-based nanowires in solution, from shape control, to yield, to aspect ratio. Various applications of palladium and palladium alloy nanowires are then discussed, including electrocatalysis, hydrogen storage, and sensing of hydrogen and other chemicals. We conclude with a summary and some perspectives on future research directions for this category of nanomaterials.
