Multi-stimuli-responsive cyanostilbene derivatives: Their fluorescent and mechanochromic properties, and potential application in water sensing and anti-counterfeiting

In recent years, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have witnessed numerous groundbreaking advances in fundamental theoretical research and functional applications. Notably, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have achieved remarkable results, demonstrating immense potential for application in various fields such as chemistry, materials science, biology, and medicine. Herein, two multi-stimuli-responsive cyanostilbene derivatives TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA were synthesized by introducing tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and trifluoromethyl groups, respectively. Primarily, under the combined mechanism of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA exhibit "on-off-on" fluorescent emission characteristics in solution. Secondly, under 365 nm ultraviolet light irradiation, the photo-induced isomerization of PH-CNTPA causes changes in photophysical property, demonstrating its responsiveness to ultraviolet light. In addition, TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTPA exhibit high-contrast mechanochromic properties, providing broader possibilities for their potential applications in various fields. Moreover, owing to the unique fluorescence emission characteristics, TPE-CNTPA and PH-CNTP have enormous potential for application in the field of encryption anti-counterfeiting. Besides, PH-CNTPA can be utilized for the detection of trace water in single or mixed solvents, demonstrating outstanding sensitivity and anti-interference properties in different solvents. This research work reveals the potential in the fields of water sensing and anti-counterfeiting for these two multi-stimuli-responsive compounds.

Nanolignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF)-enabled multifunctional ratiometric fluorescent bio-nanocomposite films for food freshness monitoring

Herein, the nanolignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNF)-enabled ratiometric fluorescent bio-nanocomposite film is developed. Interestingly, the inclusion of LCNF in the cellulose-based film enhances the detecting performance of food freshness, such as high sensitivity to biogenic amines (BAs) (limit of detection (LOD) of up to 1.83 ppm) and ultrahigh discernible fluorescence color difference (ΔE = 113.11). The underlying mechanisms are the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), π - π interaction, and cation - π interaction between LCNF and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), as well as the increased hydrophobicity due to lignin, which increases the interactions of amines with FITC. Its color stability (up to 28 days) and mechanical property (49.4 Mpa) are simultaneously improved. Furthermore, a smartphone based detecting platform is developed to achieve access to food safety. This work presents a novel technology, which can have a great potential in the field of food packaging and safety.

Breast cancer detection based on cancer antigen 15-3; emphasis on optical and electrochemical methods: A review

Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) is a crucial marker used in the diagnosis and monitoring of breast cancer (BC). The demand for early and precise cancer detection has grown, making the creation of biosensors that are highly sensitive and specific essential. This review paper provides a thorough examination of the progress made in optical and electrochemical biosensors for detecting the cancer biomarker CA 15-3. We focus on explaining their fundamental principles, sensitivity, specificity, and potential for point-of-care applications. The performance attributes of these biosensors are assessed by considering their limits of detection, reaction times, and operational stability, while also making comparisons to conventional methods of CA 15-3 detection. In addition, we explore the incorporation of nanomaterials and innovative transducer components to improve the performance of biosensors. This paper conducts a thorough examination of recent studies to identify the existing obstacles. It also suggests potential areas for future research in this fast progressing field.The paper provides insights into their advancement and utilization to enhance patient outcomes. Both categories of biosensors provide significant promise for the detection of CA 15-3 and offer distinct advantages compared to conventional analytical approaches.

In vivo deposition of poorly soluble drugs

Administered drug molecules, whether dissolved or solubilized, have the potential to precipitate and accumulate as solid forms in tissues and cells within the body. This phase transition can significantly impact the pharmacokinetics of treatment. It is thus crucial to gain an understanding of how drug solubility/permeability, drug formulations and routes of administration affect in vivo behaviors of drug deposition. This review examines literature reports on the drug deposition in tissues and cells of poorly water-soluble drugs, as well as underlying physical mechanisms that lead to precipitation. Our work particularly highlights drug deposition in macrophages and the subcellular fate of precipitated drugs. We also propose a tissue permeability-based classification framework to evaluate precipitation potentials of poorly soluble drugs in major organs and tissues. The impact on pharmacokinetics is further discussed and needs to be considered in developing drug delivery systems. Finally, bioimaging techniques that are used to examine aggregated states and the intracellular trafficking of absorbed drugs are summarized.

The intracellular visualization of exogenous DNA in fluorescence microscopy

In the development of non-viral gene delivery vectors, it is essential to reliably localize and quantify transfected DNA inside the cell. To track DNA, fluorescence microscopy methods are commonly applied. These mostly rely on fluorescently labeled DNA, DNA binding proteins fused to a fluorescent protein, or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). In addition, co-stainings are often used to determine the colocalization of the DNA in specific cellular compartments, such as the endolysosomes or the nucleus. We provide an overview of these DNA tracking methods, advice on how they should be combined, and indicate which co-stainings or additional methods are required to draw precise conclusions from a DNA tracking experiment. Some emphasis is given to the localization of exogenous DNA inside the nucleus, which is the last step of DNA delivery. We argue that suitable tools which allow for the nuclear detection of faint signals are still missing, hampering the rational development of more efficient non-viral transfection systems.

Studies of Anticancer Activities In Vitro and In Vivo for Butyltin(IV)-Iridium(III) Imidazole-Phenanthroline Complexes with Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties

Organotin(IV) and iridium(III) complexes have shown good application potential in the field of anticancer; however, the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect induced by high concentration or dose has limited the research on their targeting and anticancer mechanism. Then, a series of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-activated butyltin(IV)-iridium(III) imidazole-phenanthroline complexes were prepared in this study. Complexes exhibited significant fluorescence improvement in the aggregated state because of the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR), accompanied by an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of up to 29.2% (IrSn9). Complexes demonstrated potential in vitro antiproliferative and antimigration activity against A549 cells, following a lysosomal-mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Nude mouse models further confirmed that complexes had favorable in vivo antitumor and antimigration activity in comparison to cisplatin. Therefore, butyltin(IV)-iridium(III) imidazole-phenanthroline complexes possess the potential as potential substitutes for platinum-based drugs.

Multiquenching-Based Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence Sensing for Highly Sensitive Detection of the SARS-CoV-2 N Protein

The rapid epidemic around the world of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, proves the need and stimulates efforts to explore efficient diagnostic tests for the sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. An aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) sensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein in this work. Tetraphenylethylene doped in zeolite imidazole backbone-90 (TPE-ZIF-90) showed highly efficient aggregation-induced emission (AIE) to endow TPE-ZIF-90 with high ECL intensity. Upon the capture of the SARS-CoV-2 N protein by immune recognition, an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-modified gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-decorated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoflower (ALP/Au-ZnO) composite was introduced on the sensing platform, which catalyzed L-ascorbate-2-phosphate trisodium salt (AA2P) to produce PO43- and ascorbic acid (AA). Based on a multiquenching of the ECL signal strategy, including resonance energy transfer (RET) between TPE-ZIF-90 and Au-ZnO, disassembly of TPE-ZIF-90 triggered by the strong coordination between PO43- and Zn2+, and RET between TPE-ZIF-90 and AuNPs produced in situ by the AA reductive reaction, the constructed AIECL sensor achieved highly sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 N protein with a low limit of detection of 0.52 fg/mL. With the merits of high specificity, good stability, and proven application ability, the present RET- and enzyme-triggered multiquenching AIECL sensor may become a powerful tool in the field of SARS-CoV-2 virus diagnosis.

Supramolecular Sequential Light-Harvesting Systems for Constructing White LED Device and Latent Fingerprint Imaging

The fabrication of supramolecular light-harvesting systems (LHS) with sequential energy transfer is of significance in utilizing light energy. In this study, we report the non-covalent self-assembly of a sequential LHS by pillar[5]arene-based host-guest interaction in water and its applications in white light-emitting diode (LED) device and latent fingerprint imaging. The host-guest complex WP5 ⊃ ${ \supset }$ G self-assembles into nanoparticles in water and shows enhanced aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect. The nanoparticles can be further used to construct sequential LHS with fluorescent dyes 4,7-di(2-thienyl)-benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (DBT) and sulforhodamine 101 (SR101). Impressively, the system shows white-light emission when the molar ratio of WP5 ⊃ ${ \supset }$ G/DBT/SR101 is 1100/2/16. The material can be coated on a LED bulb to achieve white-light emission. In addition, the sequential LHS exhibit multicolor fluorescence including red emission, which have been successfully applied to high-resolution imaging of latent fingerprints. Therefore, we demonstrated a general strategy for the construction of sequential LHS in water based on macrocyclic host-guest interaction and explored its multi-functional applications in white-light LED device and imaging of latent fingerprints, which will promote future development and application of supramolecular LHSs.

Aggregation-induced generation of circularly polarized luminescence in naphthaleneimide-based nanostructures with high dissymmetry factor

Extensive efforts have been dedicated towards designing new organic materials that display solid-state fluorescence and possess optical activity, thereby leading to the fabrication of materials emitting circularly polarized light. Existing organic materials usually suffer from two limitations, a low dissymmetry factor (glum) and weak or no fluorescence in the solid state. Herein, we have demonstrated a naphthalene imide-based dyad system that remains fluorescent even in powder form and displays circularly polarized luminescence in its aggregated and solid state with significantly high glum values.

Aggregation Enhanced Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence through Spin-Orbit Coupling Regulation

Integrating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) into thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters holds great promise for the advancement of highly efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Despite recent advancements, a thorough comprehension of the underlying mechanisms remains imperative for the practical application of such materials. In this work, we introduce a novel approach aimed at modulating the TADF process by manipulating dynamic processes in excited states through aggregation effect. Our findings reveal that aggregation not only enhances both prompt and delayed fluorescence simultaneously but also imposes constraints on molecular reorientation. This constraint reinforces spin-orbit coupling and reduces the energy gap between singlets and triplets. These insights deepen our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing the aggregation effect on TADF materials and provide valuable guidance for the design of high-efficiency photoluminescent materials.

A substituent-modified new salicylaldehyde-diphenyl-azine based AIEgen: A promising skeleton for copper ion sensor

In this study, we have reported a novel 4-bromo-salicylaldehyde-diphenyl-azine (B-1), a new member of salicylaldehyde-diphenyl-azine (SDPA) family known for its excellent sensing properties. In contrast to the previously reported AIEgens, we found that the bromo-substitution at the 4th position of the salicylaldehyde moiety blue-shifted the emission by 10 and 15 nm as compared to the unsubstituted (Tong et.al 2017) and Bromo at the 5th position (Jain et.al 2023) respectively. Moreover, B-1 crystallizes instantly as the cooling process starts, which was not observed in the previously reported scaffolds. The sensing investigation again demonstrated the precise and ultrasensitive behavior of B-1 for copper ions. B-1 has a very low LOD value i.e. 29.2 x 10-8 M with a high association constant and binds with copper ion in 2:1 mode. This time we also analyzed the practical applicability in the solid phase using cotton swabs and performed the real-time estimation of copper ions in water and biological samples like urine and blood serum. The excellent percentage recovery and the RSD value suggest the precision of the experiments. Further, we also perform the sensing in living cancer HeLa cells. Altogether, we found that the SDPA skeleton is precise and ultrasensitive for copper ions and versatile which can be used variously to detect copper ions in the real world. This research will surely help in developing new specific skeleton-based AIEgens with desirable emission properties and precise applications in the future.

Three in one: coordination-induced emission for inherent fluorescent Al-MOF synthesis combined with inner filter effect@aggregation-induced emission mechanisms for designing color tonality and ratiometric sensing platforms

Three phenomena, namely coordination-induced emission (CIE), aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and inner filter effect (IFE), were incorporated into the design of a ratiometric and color tonality-based biosensor. Blue fluorescent Al-based metal-organic frameworks (FMIL-96) were prepared from non-emissive ligand and aluminum ions via CIE. Interestingly, the addition of tetracycline (TC) led to ratiometric detection and color tonality, as the blue emission at 380 nm was quenched (when excited at 350 nm) due to IFE, while the green-yellowish emission at 525 nm was enhanced due to AIE. Based on that, an ultra-sensitive visual-based color tonality mode with smartphone assistance was developed for detection of TC. The sensor exhibited a linear relationship within a broad range of 2.0 to 85.0 μM TC with a detection limit of 68.0 nM. TC in milk samples was quantified with high accuracy and precision. This integration of smartphone and visual fluorescence in solution is accurate, reliable, cost-effective, and time-saving, providing an alternative strategy for the semi-quantitative determination of TC on-site.

Recent advances in AIEgen-based chemosensors for small molecule detection, with a focus on ion sensing

Since the aggregation-based emission (AIE) phenomenon emerged in 2001, numerous chemical designs have been built around the AIE concept, displaying its utility for diverse applications, including optics, electronics, energy, and biosciences. The present review critically evaluates the broad applicability of AIEgen-based chemical models towards sensing small analytes and the structural design strategies adjusting the mode of action reported since the last decade. Various AIEgen models have been discussed, providing qualitative and quantitative estimation of cationic metal ions and anionic species, as well as biomolecular, cellular, and organelle-specific probes. A systematic overview of the reported structural design and the underlying working mode will pave the way for designing and developing the next generation of AIEgens for specific applications.

A General Approach to Activate Second-Scale Room Temperature Photoluminescence in Organic Small Molecules

Organic small molecules that exhibit second-scale phosphorescence at room temperature are of interest for potential applications in sensing, anticounterfeiting, and bioimaging. However, such materials systems are uncommon-requiring millisecond to second-scale triplet lifetimes, efficient intersystem crossing, and slow rates of nonradiative recombination. Here, a simple and scalable approach is demonstrated to activate long-lived phosphorescence in a wide variety of molecules by suspending them in rigid polymer hosts and annealing them above the polymer's glass transition temperature. This process produces submicron aggregates of the chromophore, which suppresses intramolecular motion that leads to nonradiative recombination and minimizes triplet-triplet annihilation that quenches phosphorescence in larger aggregates. In some cases, evidence of excimer-mediated intersystem crossing that enhances triplet generation in aggregated chromophores is found. In short, this approach circumvents the current design rules for long-lived phosphors, which will streamline their discovery and development.

Highly sensitive AIEE active fluorescent probe for detection of deferasirox: extensive experimental and theoretical studies

High concentrations of deferasirox (DFX) in living organisms cause hepatic, gastric and renal malfunctions. Therefore, it is significant to establish an accurate and efficient approach for the detection of deferasirox (DFX) to protect public health. Herein, we synthesized a thiourea-based diphenylacetamide probe MPT for the effective sensing of deferasirox through the fluorescence quenching phenomenon. The designed probe MPT shows a fluorescence quenching response toward deferasirox (DFX) through photo-induced electron transfer (PET). Furthermore, DFT studies were performed to support the experimental results. 1H-NMR titration experiment was used to explore the interaction type between probe MPT and DFX. The existence of non-covalent interactions was verified with spectroscopic studies that were assisted by NCI studies, QTAIM and SAPT0 analysis. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the complexation of probe MPT with DFX. Moreover, the on-site solution phase and solid-state detection of DFX by probe MPT are executed. Additionally, the practical applications of probe MPT to sense DFX were also revealed in human plasma as well as in artificial urine samples.

Recent progress in biomimetic nanomedicines based on versatile targeting strategy for atherosclerosis therapy

Atherosclerosis (AS) is considered to be one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease. Its pathological microenvironment is characterised by increased production of reactive oxygen species, lipid oxides, and excessive inflammatory factors, which accumulate at the monolayer endothelial cells in the vascular wall to form AS plaques. Therefore, intervention in the pathological microenvironment would be beneficial in delaying AS. Researchers have designed biomimetic nanomedicines with excellent biocompatibility and the ability to avoid being cleared by the immune system through different therapeutic strategies to achieve better therapeutic effects for the characteristics of AS. Biomimetic nanomedicines can further enhance delivery efficiency and improve treatment efficacy due to their good biocompatibility and ability to evade clearance by the immune system. Biomimetic nanomedicines based on therapeutic strategies such as neutralising inflammatory factors, ROS scavengers, lipid clearance and integration of diagnosis and treatment are versatile approaches for effective treatment of AS. The review firstly summarises the targeting therapeutic strategy of biomimetic nanomedicine for AS in recent 5 years. Biomimetic nanomedicines using cell membranes, proteins, and extracellular vesicles as carriers have been developed for AS.

A Membrane-Targeting Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe for Monitoring Lipid Droplet Dynamics in Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Cardiomyocyte Ferroptosis

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) is the leading cause of irreversible myocardial damage. A pivotal pathogenic factor is ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced cardiomyocyte ferroptosis, marked by iron overload and lipid peroxidation. However, the impact of lipid droplet (LD) changes on I/R-induced cardiomyocyte ferroptosis is unclear. In this study, an aggregation-induced emission probe, TPABTBP is developed that is used for imaging dynamic changes in LD during myocardial I/R-induced ferroptosis. TPABTBP exhibits excellent LD-specificity, superior capability for monitoring lipophagy, and remarkable photostability. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and super-resolution fluorescence imaging demonstrate that the TPABTBP is specifically localized to the phospholipid monolayer membrane of LDs. Imaging LDs in cardiomyocytes and myocardial tissue in model mice with MIRI reveals that the LD accumulation level increase in the early reperfusion stage (0-9 h) but decrease in the late reperfusion stage (>24 h) via lipophagy. The inhibition of LD breakdown significantly reduces the lipid peroxidation level in cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that chloroquine (CQ), an FDA-approved autophagy modulator, can inhibit ferroptosis, thereby attenuating MIRI in mice. This study describes the dynamic changes in LD during myocardial ischemia injury and suggests a potential therapeutic target for early MIRI intervention.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as carrier for improved drug delivery and biosensing applications

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) represent a significant subclass of nanoporous materials in the field of materials science, offering exceptional characteristics for advanced applications. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as a novel and intriguing type of porous material, have garnered considerable attention due to their unique design capabilities, diverse nature, and wide-ranging applications. The unique structural features of COFs, such as high surface area, tuneable pore size, and chemical stability, render them highly attractive for various applications, including targeted and controlled drug release, as well as improving the sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical biosensors. Therefore, it is crucial to comprehend the methods employed in creating COFs with specific properties that can be effectively utilized in biomedical applications. To address this indispensable fact, this review paper commences with a concise summary of the different methods and classifications utilized in synthesizing COFs. Second, it highlights the recent advancements in COFs for drug delivery, including drug carriers as well as the classification of drug delivery systems and biosensing, encompassing drugs, biomacromolecules, small biomolecules and the detection of biomarkers. While exploring the potential of COFs in the biomedical field, it is important to acknowledge the limitations that researchers may encounter, which could impact the practicality of their applications. Third, this paper concludes with a thought-provoking discussion that thoroughly addresses the challenges and opportunities associated with leveraging COFs for biomedical applications. This review paper aims to contribute to the scientific community's understanding of the immense potential of COFs in improving drug delivery systems and enhancing the performance of biosensors in biomedical applications.

Construction of an Artificial Sequential Light-Harvesting System and White-Light Material Utilizing Supramolecular Gels

The molecular (pyren-1-yloxy)-acetic acid (Py) with excellent fluorescence properties was synthesized from 1-hydroxypyrene (Hp) and formed a supramolecular gel with an acid-base stimulus response in dimethylformamide and water. On the basis of gel, the fluorescent dye perylene 3, 9-dicarbxylic acid, and rhodamine 6g were added successively to construct a step-by-step artificial light-harvesting system, so that the fluorescence color changed from blue-purple to green to red, and white light emission was realized by adjusting the ratio of donors and acceptors.

Copper-catalysed perarylation of cyclopentadiene: synthesis of hexaarylcyclopentadienes

While hexaphenylsilacyclopentadiene (hexaphenylsilole) is viewed as an archetypal Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) luminogen, its isostructural hydrocarbon surrogate hexaphenylcyclopentadiene has strikingly never been investigated in this context, most probably due to a lack of synthetic availability. Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of hexaphenylcyclopentadiene, via the direct perarylation of cyclopentadiene upon copper(i) catalysis under microwave activation, with the formation of six new C-C bonds in a single synthetic operation. Using zirconocene dichloride as a convenient source of cyclopentadiene and a variety of aryl iodides as coupling partners, this copper-catalysed cross-coupling reaction gave rise to a series of unprecedented hexaarylcyclopentadienes. The latter are direct precursors of extended π-conjugated polycyclic compounds, and their cyclodehydrogenation under Scholl reaction conditions yielded helicenic 17,17-diarylcyclopenta[l,l']diphenanthrenes. These structurally complex polyannelated fluorene derivatives can now be prepared in only two synthetic steps from cyclopentadiene.

Dual-state emission and two-wavelength amplified spontaneous emission behaviors observed from symmetric dyes based on functionalized fluorene and benzotriazole units

Structurally symmetric dyes using functionalized fluorenes and benzotriazole as the main building moieties have been synthesized and found to exhibit efficient dual-state emission (DSE) and interesting two-wavelength or dual amplified spontaneous emission (dual-ASE) behaviors in the solution phase, which may benefit the development of organic gain materials with dual-wavelength amplification.

Density Functional Theory Calculations on Fluorescence-Enhanced Mechanisms of the Optical Sensor for Zinc Ions, ADPA

N-(9-anthracenylmethyl)-N-(2-pyridinylmethyl)-2-pyridinemethanamine (ADPA) as a specific ion sensor for Zn2+ has been widely applied. Although the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism was proposed previously, its fluorescence-enhanced effect still remains somewhat ambiguous, according to unknown influences of non-radiative energy decay pathways, such as intersystem crossing and internal conversion. Herein, a thorough study using density functional theory has been performed for low-lying electronic states of the ADPA monomer and hydrated ADPA-Zn2+ complex. Based on interfragment charge transfer analyses, we quantitatively calculated the amount of transferred electrons in the monomer and complex, providing solid evidences for the PET mechanism and in line with the conclusion of frontier molecular orbital analyses. Moreover, the ISC process of S1→T2 was confirmed to play a considerable role in the excitation energy relaxation process of the ADPA monomer, but this influence was significantly suppressed in the hydrated ADPA-Zn2+ complex. These results provide additional clues for the design of new metal ion-specific fluorescence probes.

Synthesis, structure and photoluminescence properties of heterometallic-based coordination polymers of trimesic acid

Reacting trimesic acid (H3TMA, C9H6O6) with CaCl2 and MCl2 at 110 °C under hydrothermal conditions gave the isostructural heterobimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) catena-poly[[tetraaquazinc(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato], [CaZn(HTMA)2(H2O)8]n, 1, and catena-poly[[tetraaquacobalt(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato], [CaCo(HTMA)2(H2O)8]n, 2. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The solid-state structures consist of eight-coordinate CaII ions and six-coordinate MII ions. These ions are connected by a doubly deprotonated HTMA2- ligand to create a one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chain. Poly[[decaaquabis(μ3-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato)calcium(II)dizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[CaZn2(TMA)2(H2O)10]·2H2O}n, 3, was found incidentally as a minor by-product during the synthesis of 1 at a temperature of 140 °C. It forms crystals in the orthorhombic space group Ccce. The structure of 3 consists of a two-dimensional (2D) layer composed of [Zn(TMA)] chains that are interconnected by CaII ions. The presence of aromatic carboxylic acid ligands and water molecules, which can form numerous hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, increases the stability of the three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture of these CPs. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit thermal stability up to 420 °C, as indicated by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curves. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data reveal the formation of unidentified phases in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide, while 1 exhibits chemical stability in a wide range of solvents. The luminescence properties of 1 dispersed in various low molecular weight organic solvents was also examined. The results demonstrate excellent selectivity, sensitivity and recyclability for detecting acetone molecules in aqueous media. Additionally, a possible sensing mechanism is also outlined.

An AIEgen and Iodine Double-Ornamented Platinum(II) Complex for Bimodal Imaging-Guided Chemo-Photodynamic Combination Therapy

Real-time biodistribution monitoring and enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of platinum(II)-based anticancer drugs are urgently required to elevate their clinical performance. Herein, a tetraphenylethene derivative (TP) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and an iodine atom are selected as ligands to endow platinum (II) complex TP-Pt-I with real-time in vivo self-tracking ability by fluorescence (FL) and computerized tomography (CT) imaging, and improved anticancer efficacy by the combination of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Especially, benefiting from the formation of a donor-acceptor-donor structure between the AIE photosensitizer TP and Pt-I moiety, the heavy atom effects of Pt and I, and the presence of I, TP-Pt-I displayed red-shifted absorption and emission wavelengths, enhanced ROS generation efficiency, and improved CT imaging capacity compared with the pristine TP and the control agent TP-Pt-Cl. As a result, the enhanced intratumoral accumulation of TP-Pt-I loaded nanoparticles is readily revealed by dual-modal FL and CT imaging with high contrast. Meanwhile, the TP-Pt-I nanoparticles show significantly improved tumor growth-inhibiting effects on an MCF-7 xenograft murine model by combining the chemotherapeutic effects of platinum(II) and the photodynamic effects of TP. This self-tracking therapeutic complex thus provides a new strategy for improving the therapeutic outcomes of platinum(II)-based anticancer drugs.

A new carbazole based fluorescent probe with AIE characteristic for detecting and imaging hydrazine in living cells, mungbean sprouts, Arabidopsis thaliana, and practical samples

In this study, we report a new carbazole-malononitrile fluorescent probe CBC with an interesting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic. Probe CBC could rapidly and selectively detect hydrazine (N2H4) in ～100% aqueous media, and also exhibit an exceedingly low detection limit of 6.3 nM for sensitively detecting N2H4. The sensing mechanism of CBC towards N2H4 has been well demonstrated through the spectra of 1H NMR, HRMS and FTIR. Interestingly, probe CBC was applied to visualize and detect gaseous and aqueous N2H4 with sensitive color changes. Importantly, probe CBC was applied to effectively detect N2H4 in practical samples such as soil, human serum, human urine, plants, foods and beverages, as well as sensitively sense and image N2H4 in biological systems including living mungbean sprouts, Arabidopsis thaliana, and HeLa cells.

Multicolor Photochemical Printing Inside Polymer Matrices for Advanced Photonic Anticounterfeiting

Conventional security inks, generally directly printed on the data page surface, are vulnerable to counterfeiters, thereby raising the risk of chemical structural deciphering. In fact, polymer film-based data pages with customized patterns embedded within polymer matrix, rather than printed on the surface, emerge as a promising solution. Therefore, the key lies in developing fluorophores offering light dose-controlled fluorescent color inside polymer matrices. Though conventional fluorophores often suffer from photobleaching and uncontrolled photoreactions, disqualifying them for this purpose. Herein a diphenanthridinylfumaronitrile-based phototransformers (trans-D5) that undergoes photoisomerization and subsequent photocyclization during photopolymerization of the precursor, successively producing cis- and cyclo-D5 with stepwise redshifted solid-state emissions is developed. The resulting cyclo-D5 exhibits up to 172 nm emission redshift in rigidifying polymer matrices, while trans-D5 experiences a slightly blueshifted emission (≈28 nm), cis-D5 undergoes a modest redshift (≈14 nm). The markedly different rigidochromic behaviors of three D5 molecules within polymer matrices enable multicolor photochemical printing with a broad hue ranging from 38 to 10 via an anticlockwise direction in Munsell color space, yielding indecipherable fluorescent patterns in polymer films. This work provides a new method for document protection and implements advanced security features that are unattainable with conventional inks.

d-type peptides based fluorescent probes for "turn on" sensing of heparin

Developing "turn on" fluorescent probes was desirable for the detection of the effective anticoagulant agent heparin in clinical applications. Through combining the aggregation induced emission (AIE) fluorogen tetraphenylethene (TPE) and heparin specific binding peptide AG73, the promising "turn on" fluorescent probe TPE-1 has been developed. Nevertheless, although TPE-1 could achieve the sensitive and selective detection of heparin, the low proteolytic stability and undesirable poor solubility may limit its widespread applications. In this study, seven TPE-1 derived fluorescent probes were rationally designed, efficiently synthesized and evaluated. The stability and water solubility were systematically estimated. Especially, to achieve real-time monitoring of proteolytic stability, the novel Abz/Dnp-based "turn on" probes that employ the internally quenched fluorescent (IQF) mechanism were designed and synthesized. Moreover, the detection ability of synthetic fluorescent probes for heparin were systematically evaluated. Importantly, the performance of d-type peptide fluorescent probe XH-6 indicated that d-type amino acid substitutions could significantly improve the proteolytic stability without compromising its ability of heparin sensing, and attaching solubilizing tag 2-(2-aminoethoxy) ethoxy) acid (AEEA) could greatly enhance the solubility. Collectively, this study not only established practical strategies to improve both the water solubility and proteolytic stability of "turn on" fluorescent probes for heparin sensing, but also provided valuable references for the subsequent development of enzymatic hydrolysis-resistant d-type peptides based fluorescent probes.

Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Stimuli-Responsive Emission in Cholesterol-Appended Phenothiazine-Cyanostyryl-Based Donor-Acceptor Systems

Organic fluorescent molecules have received considerable attention owing to their various optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two cholesterol-functionalized cyanostyrene-phenothiazine-based D-π-A systems that are emissive in both the solution and solid states. The newly synthesized cholesterol-appended phenothiazine-cyanostyrene diads PTCS-1 and PTCS-2 vary in the N-alkylation of phenothiazine, respectively, with─octyl and─hexyl chains. Both molecules are highly fluorescent and show reasonably good quantum yields in nonpolar solvents because of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). The molecules exhibit aggregation-induced emission in the solid state. Due to the presence of flexible alkyl chains in the phenothiazine and cholesterol moieties, PTCS-1 and PTCS-2 show mechanochromic luminescence switching in response to external shear stress and emission recovery under methanol vapor. Powder X-ray diffraction studies prove that the emission switching on the applied stimuli in both PTCS-1 and PTCS-2 is attributed to the reversible transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) studies are carried out to gain insight into the ICT interactions. TD-DFT analysis at the TD-M06-2X/def2-TZVP level further revealed that in both molecules, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) + 2, LUMO, highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), and HOMO - 1 orbitals are responsible for the charge transfer interactions. These ICT interactions are identified as π-π* type interactions.

Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) in Polymers: Effect of Polymer size on the Fluorescence of Low Molecular Weight PEG and PPG

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a fascinating phenomenon where specific molecules exhibit enhanced fluorescence upon aggregation. This unique property has revolutionized the design and development of new fluorescent materials for different applications, from biosensors and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to biomedical imaging and diagnostics. Researchers are creating sensitive and selective sensing platforms, opening new avenues in material science and engineering by harnessing the potential of AIE. To expand the knowledge in this field, this study explored the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of two polymers, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polypropylene glycol (PPG) of low molecular weight (MW) using fluorescence spectroscopy and absorbance (UV). PEG-300 and PPG-725 were the most fluorescent polymers at UV of the ten investigated. Interestingly, AIE did not correlate linearly with molecular weight (MW), and monobutyl ether substitution in PEG with a similar MW substantially altered its AIE. Furthermore, fluorescence precisely quantified low polymer concentrations in water, and non-aqueous solvents suppressed AIE, suggesting potential for AIE manipulation. These findings enhance our understanding of AIE in polymers, fostering the development of novel materials for applications such as biosensors.

Understanding Antibiotic Detection with Fluorescence Quantum Dots: A Review

The utilization of fluorescent quantum dots (FL QDs) has gained significant traction in the realm of antibiotic detection, owing to their exceptional FL properties and versatility. Various types of QDs have been tailored to exhibit superior FL characteristics, employing diverse capping agents such as metals, surfactants, polymers, and biomass to protect and stabilize their surfaces. In their evolution, FL QDs have demonstrated both "turn-off" and "turn-on" mechanisms in response to the presence of analytes, offering promising avenues for biosensing applications. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in antibiotic detection utilizing FL QDs as biosensors. It encompasses an extensive examination of different types of FL QDs, including carbon, metal, and core-shell QDs, deployed for the detection of antibiotics. Furthermore, the synthesis methods employed for the fabrication of various FL QDs are elucidated, shedding light on the diverse approaches adopted in their preparation. Moreover, this review delves into the intricate sensing mechanisms underlying FL QDs-based antibiotic detection. Various mechanisms, such as photoinduced electron transfer, electron transfer, charge transfer, Forster resonance energy transfer, static quenching, dynamic quenching, inner filter effect, hydrogen bonding, and aggregation-induced emission, are discussed in detail. These mechanisms provide a robust scientific rationale for the detection of antibiotics using FL QDs, showcasing their potential for sensitive and selective sensing applications. Finally, the review addresses current challenges and offers perspectives on the future improvement of FL QDs in sensing applications. Insights into overcoming existing limitations and harnessing emerging technologies are provided, charting a course for the continued advancement of FL QDs-based biosensing platforms in the field of antibiotic detection.

Electrofluorochromic Switching of Heat-Induced Cross-Linkable Multi-Styryl-Terminated Triphenylamine and Tetraphenylethylene Derivatives

High-performance electrochromic (EC) and electrofluorochromic (EFC) materials have garnered considerable interest due to their diverse applications in smart windows, optoelectronics, optical displays, military camouflage, etc. While many different EC and EFC polymers have been reported, their preparation often requires multiple steps, and their polymer molecular weights are subjected to batch variation. In this work, we prepared two triphenylamine (TPA)-based and two tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based derivatives functionalized with terminal styryl groups via direct Suzuki coupling with (4-vinylphenyl)boronic acid and vinylboronic acid pinacol ester. The two novel TPE derivatives exhibited green-yellow aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The EC and EFC properties of pre- and post-thermally treated derivatives spin-coated onto ITO-glass substrates were studied. While all four derivatives showed modest absorption changes with applied voltages up to +2.4 V, retaining a high degree of optical transparency, they exhibited obvious EFC properties with the quenching of blue to yellow fluorescence with IOFF/ON contrast ratios of up to 7.0. The findings therefore demonstrate an elegant approach to preparing optically transparent, heat-induced, cross-linkable styryl-functionalized EFC systems.

Synthesis of New D-π-A Phenothiazine-Based Fluorescent Dyes: Aggregation Induced Emission and Antibacterial Activity

Highly solid-state fluorescent dyes based on phenothiazine bearing sulfa-drug derivatives were successfully prepared and fully characterized by NMR, mass spectra, and elemental analysis. The prepared phenothiazine dyes bearing sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole 4-(((10-hexyl-10 H-phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)amino)-N-(pyrimidin-2yl) benzenesulfonamide (PTZ-1) and 4-(((10-hexyl-10 H-phenothiazin-3-yl) methylene) amino)-N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide (PTZ-2), showed strong emission in polycrystalline form, and significant emission in solution was observed. The quantum yield of the prepared dyes varied and decreased by increasing the solvent polarity, with the maximum recorded value being 0.63 and 0.6 in dioxane. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and the effect of the solvent polarity on absorption and emission spectra were investigated. The dyeing application of polyester fabrics using the prepared phenothiazine-based dyes was studied, showing very good affinity to dyed fabrics. The antibacterial affinity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for the dye powder as well as the dyed PET fabric was investigated, with PTZ-2 showing better affinity against bacteria compared to PTZ-1. This multifunctional property highlights the potential uses of PTZ-1 and PTZ-2 for advanced applications in biomedicine and optoelectronics.

Aggregation-Induced Emission of Naphthalene Diimides: Effect of Chain Length on Liquid and Solid-Phase Emissive Properties

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of a systematic series of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) varying the chain length at the imide positions have been studied. A solvophobic collapse of NDI units through the flash injection of THF NDI solutions in sonicating water triggers the formation of stable suspensions with enhanced fluorescence emissions. Shorter chains favor the π-π stacking of NDI units through H-aggregation producing a strong AIE effect showing remarkably high quantum yields that have not been observed for non core-substitued NDIs previously. On the other hand, NDIs functionalized with longer chains lead to more disordered domains where π-π stacking between NDI units is mainly given by J-aggregation unfavoring the AIE effect.

Anti-Entropy Aggregation of Minority Groups in Polymers: Design and Applications

Minority groups are non-repeating units with very low content that inevitably exist in polymers. Typically, these minority groups are easily surrounded by the majority of repeating units and randomly dispersed, maximizing the entropy of minority groups. In the concept, anti-entropy aggregation (AEA) of minority groups is described, and different pathways are outlined. They are polymer crystallization-driven AEA, supramolecular interaction-induced AEA, phase separation-confined AEA, and hierarchical interactions-driven AEA. Typical applications of AEA materials are also presented, including fluorescence probes, self-healing materials, ion transporting regulation, and osmotic energy conversion. The concept of AEA is expected to inspire the fabrication of novel functional systems.

Powders to Thin Films: Advances in Conjugated Microporous Polymer Chemical Sensors

Chemical sensing of harmful species released either from natural or anthropogenic activities is critical to ensuring human safety and health. Over the last decade, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been proven to be potential sensor materials with the possibility of realizing sensing devices for practical applications. CMPs found to be unique among other porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to their high chemical/thermal stability, high surface area, microporosity, efficient host-guest interactions with the analyte, efficient exciton migration along the π-conjugated chains, and tailorable structure to target specific analytes. Several CMP-based optical, electrochemical, colorimetric, and ratiometric sensors with excellent selectivity and sensing performance were reported. This review comprehensively discusses the advances in CMP chemical sensors (powders and thin films) in the detection of nitroaromatic explosives, chemical warfare agents, anions, metal ions, biomolecules, iodine, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with simultaneous delineation of design strategy principles guiding the selectivity and sensitivity of CMP. Preceding this, various photophysical mechanisms responsible for chemical sensing are discussed in detail for convenience. Finally, future challenges to be addressed in the field of CMP chemical sensors are discussed.

Surfactant-based supramolecular dye assembly: A highly selective and economically viable platform for quantification of heparin antidote

Herein, we have employed a supramolecular assembly of a cationic dye, LDS-698 and a common surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a turn-on fluorescent sensor for protamine (Pr) detection. Addition of cationic Pr to the solution of dye-surfactant complex brings negatively charged SDS molecules together through strong electrostatic interaction, assisting aggregation of SDS way before its critical micellar concentration (CMC). These aggregates encapsulate the dye molecules within their hydrophobic region, arresting non-radiative decay channels of the excited dye. Thus, the LDS-698•SDS assembly displays substantial enhancement in fluorescence intensity that follows a nice linear trend with Pr concentration, providing limit of detection (LOD) for Pr as low as 3.84(±0.11) nM in buffer, 124.4(±6.7) nM in 1% human serum and 28.3(±0.5) nM in 100% human urine. Furthermore, high selectivity, low background signal, large stokes shift, and emission in the biologically favorable deep-red region make the studied assembly a promising platform for Pr sensing. As of our knowledge it is the first ever Pr sensory platform, using a very common surfactant (SDS), which is economically affordable and very easily available in the market. This innovative approach can replace the expensive, exotic and specialized chemicals considered for the purpose and thus showcase its potential in practical applications.

Recent Advances in Electrochemiluminescence Biosensors for MicroRNA Detection

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) as an analytical technology with a perfect combination of electrochemistry and spectroscopy has received considerable attention in bioanalysis due to its high sensitivity and broad dynamic range. Given the selectivity of bio-recognition elements and the high sensitivity of the ECL analysis technique, ECL biosensors are powerful platforms for the sensitive detection of biomarkers, achieving the accurate prognosis and diagnosis of diseases. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial biomarkers involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, whose aberrant expression is often related to serious diseases, especially cancers. ECL biosensors can fulfill the highly sensitive and selective requirements for accurate miRNA detection, prompting this review. The ECL mechanisms are initially introduced and subsequently categorize the ECL biosensors for miRNA detection in terms of the quenching agents. Furthermore, the work highlights the signal amplification strategies for enhancing ECL signal to improve the sensitivity of miRNA detection and finally concludes by looking at the challenges and opportunities in ECL biosensors for miRNA detection.

A sequential light-harvesting system with thermosensitive colorimetric emission in both aqueous solution and hydrogel

Inspired by natural photosynthetic systems that feature both sequential energy transfer and temperature response, we herein report an artificial thermosensitive sequential light-harvesting system (LHS) based on an amphiphilic molecule TPEO. It self-assembles into fluorescent nanoparticles in water and shows tunable LCST behavior. By loading ESY as the first acceptor and NiR as the second acceptor into the nanoparticles, an artificial LHS with two-step FRET was successfully constructed. Interestingly, the system exhibits thermosensitive colorimetric fluorescence in both aqueous solution and hydrogel by taking advantage of a combination of LCST and sequential FRET.

Molecular engineering to design a bright near-infrared red photosensitizer: cellular bioimaging and phototherapy

Near-infrared red (NIR) fluorescence imaging guide phototherapeutic therapy (PDT) has the advantages of deep tissue penetration, real-time monitoring of drug treatment and disease, little damage to normal tissue, low cytotoxicity and almost no side effects, and thus, it is attracting increasing research attention and is expected to show promising potential for clinical tumor treatment. The photosensitizer (PS), light source and oxygen are the three basic and important factors to construct PDT technology, and highly efficient PSs are still being passionately pursued because they determine the PDT efficiency. Ideal PSs should have properties such as good biocompatibility, deep tissue penetration, and highly efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation despite the hypoxic environment. Therefore, pure organic type I PSs with NIR fluorescence have been receiving increasing attention due to their deep penetration and hypoxia resistance. However, reported NIR-active type I PSs usually require complex synthetic procedures, which presents a challenge for mass production. In this research work, based on the molecular design ideas of introducing the heavy atom effect and intramolecular charge transfer, we prepared three NIR-active type I PSs (TNZ, TNZBr, and TNZCHO) using a very simple method with one or two synthetic steps. Clear characterizations of photophysical properties, ROS performance tests, and fluorescent imaging of human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVE) cells and PDT treatment of HepG2 cells were carried out. The results revealed that the heavy atom and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effects could obviously enhance the ROS efficiency, and both PSs produce only type I ROS without any type II ROS (1O2) generation. The good NIR fluorescence brightness and type I ROS efficiency ensure satisfactory bioimaging and PDT outcomes. This research provides the possibility of preparing NIR-active type I PSs via mass production.

Novel Anthracene and Carbazole Based Aggregation Induced Enhanced Emission Active Schiff Base as a Selective Sensor for Cu2+ ions

In present work our group has synthesized two novel Schiff-bases, Di-Carbazole based Schiff-base (DB-1) and Di-Anthracene based Schiff-base (DB-2) using condensation reaction and characterized thorough different spectroscopic techniques such as mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the AIE(Aggregation induced emission) studies were done using water-THF mixture. As compared to pure THF, the DB-2 showed a 17.8-fold increase in fluorescence intensity with a bathochromic shift of 64 nm in 80% water: THF mixture. For DB-1increase was seen at 70% water-THF combination. The analysis of the dynamic light scattering (DLS) further supported this excellent AIEE (Aggregation induced enhanced emission) characteristic. Furthermore, the spectrofluorometric techniques were used to examine the capacity of both Schiff bases to detect the heavy metals. It was discovered that only DB-1, with a detection limit of 2.4 × 10-8 M, was selective for the Cu2+ ion, whereas DB-2 had no sensing capability for metal ions. The Job's plot was used to determine the stoichiometry ratio of the DB-1 with Cu2+ to further examine the process. It was discovered that the ratio was 1:1 (DB-1:Cu2+). Additionally, the association constant of DB-1 for Cu2+ was 5.1 × 1011 M-1, demonstrating the excellent binding affinity of DB-1 for the Cu2+ ion.

New type of tin(IV) complex based turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for fluoride ion recognition: elucidating the effect of molecular structure on sensing property

A novel type of chemosensor based on tin(IV) complexes incorporating hydroxyquinoline derivatives has been designed and investigated for selectively detecting fluoride ions. Sn(meq)2Cl2 (meq = 2-methyl-8-quinolinol) (complex 1) exhibits a significant enhancement in luminescence upon the introduction of fluoride ions. This enhancement greatly surpasses that observed with Snq2Cl2 and Sn(dmqo)2Cl2 (q = 8-hydroxyquinnoline; dmqo = 5,7-dimethyl-8-quinolinol). Furthermore, complex 1 displays excellent sensitivity and selectivity for fluoride detection in comparison to halides and other anions. As a result, complex 1 serves as an outstanding turn-on fluorescent chemosensor, effectively sensing fluoride ions. The Benesi-Hilderbrand method and Job's plot confirmed that complex 1 associates with F- in a 1 : 2 binding stoichiometry. Also, complex 1 exhibited a large binding constant (pKb = 10.4 M-2) and a low detection limit (100 nM). To gain a deeper insight into the photophysical properties and the underlying mechanism governing the formation of the tin(IV) fluoride complex via halide exchange, we successfully synthesized partially fluorinated Sn(meq)2F0.67Cl1.33 (2) and fully fluorinated Sn(meq)2F2 (3), all of which were characterized through computational studies, thereby elucidating their photophysical properties. DFT studies reveal that converting Sn(meq)2Cl2 to Sn(meq)2F2, an endergonic process, leads to greater stability due to reducing steric hindrance about the metal center. Furthermore, the fluorinated complex significantly increases dipole moment, resulting in high affinity toward the F- ion.

Organic Donor-Acceptor Complexes As Potential Semiconducting Materials

In this review article, the synthesis, characterization and physico-chemical properties of the organic donor-acceptor complexes are highlighted and a special emphasis has been placed on developing them as semiconducting materials. The electron-rich molecules, i. e., donors have been broadly grouped in three categories, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen heterocycles and sulphur containing aromatic donors. The reactions of these classes of the donors with the acceptors, namely tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), benzoquinone, pyromellitic dianhydride and pyromellitic diimides, fullerenes, phenazine, benzothiadiazole, naphthalimide, DMAD, maleic anhydride, viologens and naphthalene diimide are described. The potential applications of the resulting DA complexes for physico-electronic purposes are also included. The theoretical investigation of many of these products with a view to rationalise their observed physico-chemical properties is also discussed.

Aminoguanidine-based bioactive proligand as AIEE probe for anticancer and anticovid studies

The emission features of a novel bioactive compound, 1,3-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-diiodophenyl-methylideneamino)guanidine is found impressive with aggregation induced emission enhancement. The nitrogen and iodine rich multidentate proligand was characterized physicochemically. SCXRD and Hirshfeld surface investigation have revealed the presence of significant triangular iodine bonding apart from hydrogen bonding, weak C-H⋯π and π⋯π intermolecular interactions. These interactions collectively contribute to the solid-state packing arrangement of the molecules within the crystal lattice. The band gap of the compound was estimated experimentally and is supported with theoretical calculations. The solid-state fluorescence quantum yield of Φ = 0.36 emphasizes the utility of the proligand and the AIEE characteristics is attributed to restricted intramolecular motions as indicated by fluorescence lifetime decay studies. Strong interaction of the compound with calf thymus DNA was explored experimentally and found to align with in silico docking results. Notably, in vitro anticancer assessment on MCF-7 breast cancer cells show an IC50 value of 181.05 μg mL-1 and signifying its potent cytotoxic properties. Also, the compound is found to have lesser cytotoxicity against L929 normal cell line with an IC50 value of 356.54 μg mL-1. Computational studies further underscore the exceptional binding affinity with active sites in the SARS-CoV-2 main protease 3CLpro, surpassing established repurposed drugs. Furthermore, the proligand demonstrates excellent putative affinity towards the SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein, accompanied by its distinctive AIEE attributes, drug likeness and DNA binding capability rendering it a valuable tool for prospective research investigations.

Flexible molecular crystals for optoelectronic applications

The cornerstones of the advancement of flexible optoelectronics are the design, preparation, and utilization of novel materials with favorable mechanical and advanced optoelectronic properties. Molecular crystalline materials have emerged as a class of underexplored yet promising materials due to the reduced grain boundaries and defects anticipated to provide enhanced photoelectric characteristics. An inherent drawback that has precluded wider implementation of molecular crystals thus far, however, has been their brittleness, which renders them incapable of ensuring mechanical compliance required for even simple elastic or plastic deformation of the device. It is perplexing that despite a plethora of reports that have in the meantime become available underpinning the flexibility of molecular crystals, the "discovery" of elastically or plastically deformable crystals remains limited to cases of serendipitous and laborious trial-and-error approaches, a situation that calls for a systematic and thorough assessment of these properties and their correlation with the structure. This review provides a comprehensive and concise overview of the current understanding of the origins of crystal flexibility, the working mechanisms of deformations such as plastic and elastic bending behaviors, and insights into the examples of flexible molecular crystals, specifically concerning photoelectronic changes that occur in deformed crystals. We hope this summary will provide a reference for future experimental and computational efforts with flexible molecular crystals aimed towards improving their mechanical behavior and optoelectronic properties, ultimately intending to advance the flexible optoelectronic technology.

C3-Symmetric Luminescent Diketone with Amido-Linkage as a Polymorphic Fluorescence Emitter

The study introduces a novel C3-symmetric β-diketone compound, BTA-D3, and its monomeric counterpart, D, with a focus on their synthetic procedure, photophysical properties and aggregation behavior. Both compounds exhibit characteristic absorption and weak fluorescence in solution, with BTA-D3 displaying higher absorption coefficients due to its larger number of diketone units. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations suggest increased co-planarity of diketone groups in BTA-D3. A significant finding is the Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) property of BTA-D3, as its fluorescence intensity increases dramatically when exposed to specific solvent ratios. The AIE behavior is attributed to intermolecular excitonic interaction between BTA-D3 molecules in self-organized aggregates. We also studied fluorescence anisotropy of BTA-D3 and D. Despite its larger size, BTA-D3 showed reduced anisotropy values because of efficient intramolecular energy migration among three diketone units. Furthermore, BTA-D3 demonstrates unique polymorphism, yielding different emission colors and structures depending on the solvent used. A unique approach is presented for promoting the growth of self-organized aggregate structures via solvent evaporation, leading to distinct fluorescence properties. This research contributes to the understanding of C3-symmetric structural molecules and provides insights into strategies for controlling molecular alignment to achieve diverse fluorescence coloration in molecular materials.

Ultrafast restricted intramolecular rotation in molecules with aggregation induced emission

In this work, the ultrafast intramolecular rotation behavior of 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole has been investigated in several solutions with different viscosities using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy combined with density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. It is demonstrated that the nonradiative process, which competes with radiative decay, involves two main stages, namely the restricted intramolecular rotation and internal conversion processes. The intramolecular rotation depends on viscosity and presents a significant restriction. The restricted rotational rate is determined to be dozens of picoseconds. The following nonradiative process is strongly dominated by intramolecular rotation. The nonradiative decay rate will decrease with the increase in viscosity, leading to a rise in the radiative probability and photoluminous yield. These results have borne out the mechanism of ultrafast restricted intramolecular rotation of aggregation induced emission and provided a detailed photophysical picture of nonradiative processes.

Multi-step FRET systems based on discrete supramolecular assemblies

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the excited state of the donor to the ground state of the acceptor is one of the most important fluorescence mechanisms and has wide applications in light-harvesting systems, light-mediated therapy, bioimaging, optoelectronic devices, and information security fields. The phenomenon of sequential energy transfer in natural photosynthetic systems provides great inspiration for scientists to make full use of light energy. In recent years, discrete supramolecular assemblies (DSAs) have been successively constructed to incorporate donor and multiple acceptors, and to achieve multi-step FRET between them. This perspective describes recent advances in the fabrication and application of DSAs with multi-step FRET. These DSAs are categorized based on the non-covalent scaffolds, such as amphiphilic nanoparticles, host-guest assemblies, metal-coordination scaffolds, and biomolecular scaffolds. This perspective will also outline opportunities and future challenges in this research area.

Aggregation/Crystallization-Induced Emission in Naphthyridine-Based Carbazolyl-Modified Donor-Acceptor Boron Dyes Tunable by Fluorine Atoms

Four donor-acceptor boron difluoride complexes based on the carbazole electron donor and the [1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinino[3,4-a][1,8]naphthyridine acceptor were designed, synthesized, and systematically spectroscopically investigated in solutions, in dye-doped polymer films, and in the solid states. The dyes exhibit an intense blue to red solid-state emission with photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 59 % in pure dye samples and 86 % in poly(methyl methacrylate) films. All boron complexes show aggregation-induced emission and reversible mechanofluorochromism. The optical properties of these dyes and their solid state luminescence can be tuned by substitution pattern, i. e., the substituents at the naphthyridine unit. Exchange of CH3- for CF3-groups does not only increase the intramolecular charge transfer character, but also provides a crystallization-induced emission enhancement.

Charge-Reversal NaCl/G-Quartets for Aggregation-Induced Mitochondrial MicroRNA Imaging and Ion-Interference Therapy

Mitochondrial therapy is a promising new strategy that offers the potential to achieve precise disease diagnosis or maximum therapeutic response. However, versatile mitochondrial theranostic platforms that integrate biomarker detection and therapy have rarely been exploited. Here, we report a charge-reversal nanomedicine activated by an acidic microenvironment for mitochondrial microRNA (mitomiR) detection and ion-interference therapy. The transporter liposome (DD-DC) was constructed from a pH-responsive polymer and a positively charged phospholipid, encapsulating NaCl nanoparticles with coloading of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorogens AIEgen-DNA/G-quadruplexes precursor and brequinar (NAB@DD-DC). The negatively charged nanomedicine ensured good blood stability and high tumor accumulation, while the charge-reversal to positive in response to the acidic pH in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and lysosomes enhanced the uptake by tumor cells and lysosome escape, achieving accumulation in mitochondria. The subsequently released Na+ in mitochondria not only contributed to the formation of mitomiR-494 induced G-quadruplexes for AIE imaging diagnosis but also led to an osmolarity surge that was enhanced by brequinar to achieve effective ion-interference therapy.
