Selective Construction and Structural Transformation of Homogeneous Linear Metalla[4]catenane and Metalla[2]catenane Assemblies

Although the synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules has been extensively researched, selectively constructing homogeneous linear [4]catenanes remains a formidable challenge. Here, we selectively constructed a homogeneous linear metalla[4]catenane in a one-step process through the coordination-driven self-assembly of a bidentate benzothiadiazole derivative ligand and a binuclear half-sandwich rhodium precursor. The formation of metalla[4]catenanes was facilitated by cooperative interactions between strong sandwich-type π-π stacking and non-classical hydrogen bonds between the components. Moreover, by modulating the aromatic substituents on the binuclear precursor, two homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes were obtained. The molecular structures of these metallacatenanes were unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, reversible structural transformation between metal-catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be achieved by altering their concentration, as confirmed by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy studies.

Template-Directed Synthesis of Strained meso-meso-Linked Porphyrin Nanorings

Strained macrocycles display interesting properties, such as conformational rigidity, often resulting in enhanced π-conjugation or enhanced affinity for non-covalent guest binding, yet they can be difficult to synthesize. Here we use computational modeling to design a template to direct the formation of an 18-porphyrin nanoring with direct meso-meso bonds between the porphyrin units. Coupling of a linear 18-porphyrin oligomer in the presence of this template gives the target nanoring, together with an unexpected 36-porphyrin ring by-product. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) revealed the elliptical conformations and flexibility of these nanorings on a Au(111) surface.

Mechanically Interlocked Polymers with Dense Mechanical Bonds

ConspectusMechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) such as polyrotaxanes and polycatenanes are polymer architectures that incorporate mechanical bonds, which represent a compelling frontier in polymer science. MIPs with cross-linked structures are known as mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) and are widely utilized in materials science. Leveraging the motion of mechanical bonds, MINs hold the potential for achieving a combination of robustness and dynamicity. Currently, the reported MINs predominantly consist of networks with discrete mechanical bonds as cross-linking points, exemplified by well-known slide-ring materials and rotaxane/catenane cross-linked polymers. The motion of these mechanically interlocked cross-linking points facilitates the redistribution of tension throughout the network, effectively preventing stress concentration and thereby enhancing material toughness. In these instances, the impact of mechanical bonds can be likened to the adage "small things can make a big difference", whereby a limited number of mechanical bonds substantially elevate the mechanical performance of conventional polymers. In addition to MINs cross-linked by mechanical bonds, there is another type of MIN in which their principal parts are polymer chains composed of dense mechanical bonds. Within these MINs, mechanical bonds generally serve as repeating units, and their unique properties stem from integrating and amplifying the function of a large amount of mechanical bonds. Consequently, MINs with dense mechanical bonds tend to reflect the intrinsic properties of mechanical interlocked polymers, making their exploration critical for a comprehensive understanding of MIPs. Nevertheless, investigations into MINs featuring dense mechanical bonds remain relatively scarce.This Account presents a comprehensive overview of our investigation and insights into MINs featuring dense mechanical bonds. First, we delve into the synthetic strategies employed to effectively prepare MINs with dense mechanical bonds, while critically evaluating their advantages and limitations. Through meticulous control of the core interlocking step, three distinct strategies have emerged: mechanical interlocking followed by polymerization, supramolecular polymerization followed by mechanical interlocking, and dynamic interlocking. Furthermore, we underscore the structure-property relationships of MINs with dense mechanical bonds. The macroscopic properties of MINs originate from integrating and amplifying countless microscopic motions of mechanical bonds, a phenomenon we define as an integration and amplification mechanism. Our investigation has revealed detailed motion characteristics of mechanical bonds in bulk mechanically interlocked materials, encompassing the quantification of motion activation energy, discrimination of varying motion distances, and elucidation of the recovery process. Additionally, we have elucidated their influence on the mechanical performance of the respective materials. Moreover, we have explored potential applications of MINs, leveraging their exceptional mechanical properties and dynamicity. These applications include enhancing the toughness of conventional polymers, engineering mechanically adaptive and multifunctional aerogels, and mitigating Li protrusion as interfacial layers in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, we offer our personal perspectives on the promises, opportunities, and key challenges in the future development of MINs with dense mechanical bonds, underscoring the potential for transformative advancements in this burgeoning field.

Iminopyrrole-Based Self-Assembly: A Route to Intrinsically Flexible Molecular Links and Knots

The use of 2,5-diformylpyrrole in self-assembly reactions with diamines and Zn(II)/Cd(II) salts allowed the preparation of [2]catenane, trefoil knot, and Borromean rings. The intrinsically dynamic nature of the diiminopyrrole motif rendered all of the formed assemblies intramolecularly flexible. The presence of diiminopyrrole revealed new coordination motifs and influenced the host-guest chemistry of the systems, as illustrated by hexafluorophosphate encapsulation by Borromean rings.

Mononuclear or Coordination Polymer Complexes? Both Are Possible for 3,6,9-Trioxaundecanedioic Acid

Investigating the driving forces leading to the formation of a specific supramolecular architecture among a wide spectrum of all the possibly obtainable structures is not an easy task. The contemporary literature provides several models for correctly predicting the thermodynamically accessible structures that can originate from a library of building blocks. Definitions are rigid by their very nature, so their application may sometimes require a shift in perspective. In the study presented herein, we describe the crystal structures of three metallo-supramolecular architectures assembled from deprotonated derivatives of 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid and Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). In the Mn(II) case, the complexation resulted in a complex of a discrete/heptacoordinated nature, whereas the other two structures appeared as helical polymers. To explain such an anomaly, in this work, we describe how the interplay between the flexibility of the ligand spacer and the number of coordinating atoms involved determines the divergent or convergent organisation of the final coordination architecture.

Constructing Ultrastable Metallo-Cages via In Situ Deprotonation/Oxidation of Dynamic Supramolecular Assemblies

Coordination-driven self-assembly enables the spontaneous construction of metallo-supramolecules with high precision, facilitated by dynamic and reversible metal-ligand interactions. The dynamic nature of coordination, however, results in structural lability in many metallo-supramolecular assembly systems. Consequently, it remains a formidable challenge to achieve self-assembly reversibility and structural stability simultaneously in metallo-supramolecular systems. To tackle this issue, herein, we incorporate an acid-/base-responsive tridentate ligand into multitopic building blocks to precisely construct a series of metallo-supramolecular cages through coordination-driven self-assembly. These dynamic cagelike assemblies can be transformed to their static states through mild in situ deprotonation/oxidation, leading to ultrastable skeletons that can withstand high temperatures, metal ion chelators, and strong acid/base conditions. This in situ transformation provides a reliable and powerful approach to manipulate the kinetic features and stability of metallo-supramolecules and allows for modulation of encapsulation and release behaviors of metallo-cages when utilizing nanoscale quantum dots (QDs) as guest molecules.

Self-Assembly and Photothermal Conversion of MetallaRussian Doll and Metalla[2]catenanes Induced via Multiple Stacking Interactions

A variety of organometallic supramolecular architectures have been constructed over the past decades and their properties were also explored via different strategies. However, the synthesis of metalla-Russian doll is still a fascinating challenge. Herein, a series of new coordination supramolecular complexes, including a metalla-Russian doll, metalla[2]catenanes, and metallarectangles, were synthesized by using meticulously selected Cp*Rh (Cp* = η5-C5Me5) building units (E1, E2, and E3) and three rigid anthracylpyridine ligands (L1, L2, and L3) via a self-assembly strategy. While the combination of the short ligand L1 and E1 or E2 generated two metallarectangles, the longer ligand L2 containing an alkynyl group resulted in two new [2]catenanes, most likely due to which the strong electron-donating effect of alkynyl groups causes self-accumulation. Interestingly, an unusual Russian doll assembly was obtained through the reaction of L3 and E3 based on sextuple π···π stacking interactions. Furthermore, the dynamic structural conversion between [2]catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be observed through concentration-, solvent-, and guest-induced effects. The [2]catenane complexes 4b displayed efficient photothermal conversion efficiency in solution (20.2%), in comparison with other organometallic macrocycles. We believe that π···π stacking interactions generate active nonradiative pathways and promote radiative photodeactivation pathways. This study proves the versatility of half-sandwich building units, not only to build complicated supramolecular topologies but also in effective functional materials for various appealing applications.

Hourglass-Shaped Nanocages with Concaved Structures Based on Selective Self-Complementary Coordination Ligands and Tunable Hierarchical Self-Assembly

Three-dimensional (3D) structures constructed via coordination-driven self-assemblies have recently garnered increasing attention due to the challenges in structural design and potential applications. In particular, developing new strategy for the convenient and precise self-assemblies of 3D supramolecular structures is of utmost interest. Introducing the concept of self-coordination ligands, herein the design and synthesis of two meta-modified terpyridyl ligands with selective self-complementary coordination moiety are reported and their capability to assemble into two hourglass-shaped nanocages SA and SB is demonstrated. Within these 3D structures, the meta-modified terpyridyl unit preferably coordinates with itself to serve as concave part. By changing the arm length of the ligands, hexamer (SA) and tetramer (SB) are obtained respectively. In-depth studies on the assembly mechanism of SA and SB indicate that the dimers could be formed first via self-complementary coordination and play crucial roles in controlling the final structures. Moreover, both SA and SB can go through hierarchical self-assemblies in solution as well as on solid-liquid interface, which are characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is further demonstrated that various higher-order assembly structures can be achieved by tuning the environmental conditions.

Transient self-assembly of metal-organic complexes

Implementing transient processes in networks of dynamic molecules holds great promise for developing new functional behaviours. Here we report that trichloroacetic acid can be used to temporarily rearrange networks of dynamic imine-based metal complexes towards new equilibrium states, forcing them to express complexes otherwise unfavourable in their initial equilibrium states. Basic design principles were determined for the creation of such networks. Where a complex distribution of products was obtained in the initial equilibrium state of the system, the transient rearrangement temporarily yielded a simplified output, forcing a more structured distribution of products. Where a single complex was obtained in the initial equilibrium state of the system, the transient rearrangement temporarily modified the properties of this complex. By doing so, the mechanical properties of an helical macrocyclic complex could be temporarily altered by rearranging it into a [2]catenane.

Can Polymer Helicity Affect Topological Chirality of Polymer Knots?

We investigate the effect of helicity in isolated polymers on the topological chirality of their knots with computer simulations. Polymers are described by generic worm-like chains (WLC), where helical conformations are promoted by chiral coupling between segments that are neighbors along the chain contour. The sign and magnitude of the coupling coefficient u determine the sense and strength of helicity. The corrugation of the helix is adjusted via the radius R of a spherical, hard excluded volume around each WLC segment. Open and compact helices are, respectively, obtained for R that is either zero or smaller than the length of the WLC bond, and R that is a few times larger than the bond length. We use a Monte Carlo algorithm to sample polymer conformations for different values of u, spanning the range from achiral polymers to chains with well-developed helices. Monitoring the average helix torsion and fluctuations of chiral order as a function of u, for two very different chain lengths, demonstrates that the coil-helix transition in this model is not a phase transition but a crossover. Statistical analysis of conformations forming the simplest chiral knots, 3₁, 5₁, and 5₂, demonstrates that topological mirror symmetry is broken─knots formed by helices with a given sense prefer one handedness over the other. For the 3₁ and 5₁ knots, positive helical sense favors positive handedness. Intriguingly, an opposite trend is observed for 5₂ knots, where positive helical sense promotes negative handedness. We argue that this special coupling between helicity and topological chirality stems from a generic mechanism: conformations where some of the knot crossings are found in "braids" formed by two tightly interwoven sections of the polymer.

Non-equilibrium Nanoassemblies Constructed by Confined Coordination on a Polymer Chain

Biological systems employ non-equilibrium self-assembly to create ordered nanoarchitectures with sophisticated functions. However, it is challenging to construct artificial non-equilibrium nanoassemblies due to lack of control over assembly dynamics and kinetics. Herein, we design a series of linear polymers with different side groups for further coordination-driven self-assembly based on shape-complementarity. Such a design introduces a main-chain confinement which effectively slows down the assembly process of side groups, thus allowing us to monitor the real-time evolution of lychee-like nanostructures. The function related to the non-equilibrium nature is further explored by performing photothermal conversion study. The ability to observe and capture non-equilibrium states in this supramolecular system will enhance our understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic features as well as functions of living systems.

Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly: From Discrete Supramolecular Self-Assemblies to Functional Soft Materials

Anion templated assembly of supramolecular systems has been extensively explored in previous reports, whereas anions serve only as an auxiliary and spectator role. With the development of anion coordination chemistry in recent years, anion coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) has emerged as a new strategy for the construction of supramolecular self-assemblies. Anions are proved to exist as the main actors in the construction of supramolecular architectures, i. e., serve as the coordination center. This Review will focus on the recent progress in anion-coordination-driven assembly of discrete supramolecular architectures, such as helicates, polyhedrons and polygons, and the various applications of 'aniono'-systems. At the end of this Review, we highlight current challenges and opportunities for future research of anion-coordination-driven self-assembly.

Going Up the Ladder: Stacking Four 4,4'-Bipyridine Moieties within a Ti(IV)-Based Tetranuclear Architecture

Biphenol-based ligands have proven their ability to bind titanium(IV) centers and generate sophisticated self-assembled structures in which auxiliary nitrogen ligands often complete the coordination sphere of the metal and improve stability. Here, a central 4,4'-bipyridine, which acts as both a spacer and a source of monodentate nitrogen to complete the coordination sphere of the Ti(IV) complex, was incorporated within two bis-2,2'-biphenol strands, 3H₄ and 4H₄. Both proligands possess structural features that are well adapted to form self-assembled structures built from titanium-oxygen-nitrogen units; however, their different degrees of torsional freedom strongly influenced the nuclearity of the complexes formed. The presence of a phenyl spacer between the bipyridine and the biphenol moieties of 3H₄ provided enough flexibility for the ligand to wrap around one titanium(IV) center to form a mononuclear complex Ti(3)(DMF)₂ in the presence of dimethylformamide (DMF). Assembly of the more rigid ligand 4H₄ with Ti(OiPr)₄ afforded a tetranuclear complex Ti₄(4)₂(4H)₂(OEt)₂ containing four stacked 4,4'-bipyridine units as shown by the X-ray structure of the complex. Density functional theory studies suggested that the assembly of this tetrametallic complex involves a dimetallic intermediate with TiO₆ nodes that is converted to the thermodynamically stable tetranuclear complex with two TiO₆ nodes and two TiO₅N units with enhanced covalent character.

Knotting matters: orderly molecular entanglements

Entangling strands in a well-ordered manner can produce useful effects, from shoelaces and fishing nets to brown paper packages tied up with strings. At the nanoscale, non-crystalline polymer chains of sufficient length and flexibility randomly form tangled mixtures containing open knots of different sizes, shapes and complexity. However, discrete molecular knots of precise topology can also be obtained by controlling the number, sequence and stereochemistry of strand crossings: orderly molecular entanglements. During the last decade, substantial progress in the nascent field of molecular nanotopology has been made, with general synthetic strategies and new knotting motifs introduced, along with insights into the properties and functions of ordered tangle sequences. Conformational restrictions imparted by knotting can induce allostery, strong and selective anion binding, catalytic activity, lead to effective chiral expression across length scales, binding modes in conformations efficacious for drug delivery, and facilitate mechanical function at the molecular level. As complex molecular topologies become increasingly synthetically accessible they have the potential to play a significant role in molecular and materials design strategies. We highlight particular examples of molecular knots to illustrate why these are a few of our favourite things.

Self-Assembly of Molecular Trefoil Knots Featuring Pentadecanuclear Homoleptic AuI -, AuI /AgI -, or AuI /CuI -Alkynyl Coordination

Metal-free and metal-containing molecular trefoil knots are fascinating ensembles that are usually covalently assembled, the latter requiring the rational design of di- or multidentate/multipodal ligands as connectors. In this work, we describe the self-assembly of pentadecanuclear Au^I trefoil knots [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] from monoalkynes HC≡CR (R=9,9-X₂ -fluorenyl with X=nBu, n-hexyl) and [Au^I (THT)Cl]. Hetero-bimetallic counterparts [Au₉ M₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] (M=Cu/Ag) were self-assembled by reactions of [Au₁₅ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] with [Cu(MeCN)₄ ]⁺ /AgNO₃ and HC≡CR. The type of pentadecanuclear trefoil knots described herein is characterized by X-ray crystallography, 2D NMR and HR-ESI-MS. [Au₉ Cu₆ (C≡CR)₁₅ ] is relatively stable in hexane; its excited state properties were investigated. DFT calculations revealed that non-covalent metal-metal and metal-ligand interactions, together with longer alkyl chain-strengthened inter-ligand dispersion interactions, govern the stability of the trefoil knot structures.

Highly selective synthesis and near-infrared photothermal conversion of metalla-Borromean ring and [2]catenane assemblies

Although the selective synthesis of complicated supramolecular architectures has seen significant progress in recent years, the exploration of the properties of these complexes remains a fascinating challenge. Herein, a series of new supramolecular topologies, metalla[2]catenanes and Borromean ring assemblies, were constructed based on appropriate Cp*Rh building blocks and two rigid alkynyl pyridine ligands (L1, L2) via coordination-driven self-assembly. Interestingly, minor differences between the two rigid alkynyl pyridine ligands with/without organic substituents led to products with dramatically different topologies. Careful structural analysis showed that π–π stacking interactions play a crucial role in stabilizing these [2]catenanes and Borromean ring assemblies, while also promoting nonradiative transitions and triggering photothermal conversion in both the solution and the solid states. These results were showcased through comparative studies of the NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies of the Borromean ring assemblies, [2]catenanes and metallarectangles, which exhibited a wide range of photothermal conversion efficiencies (12.64–72.21%). The influence of the different Cp*Rh building blocks on the NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies of their assemblies was investigated. Good photothermal conversion properties of the assemblies were also found in the solid state. This study provides a new strategy to construct valuable half-sandwich-based NIR photothermal conversion materials while also providing promising candidates for the further development of materials science.

The selective synthesis of three kinds of supermolecular topologies, molecular Borromean ring, [2]catenane and metallarectangle based on two alkynyl ligands is presented. Remarkably, the NIR photothermal conversion efficiency was found to improve as the π–π stacking increases.

Foldaxanes: Rotaxane-like Architectures from Foldamers

Mechanically interlocked molecules such as rotaxanes and catenanes contain free-moving components that cannot dissociate and have enabled the investigation and control of various translational and rotational molecular motions. The architecture of pseudo-rotaxanes and of some kinetically labile rotaxanes is comparable to that of rotaxanes but their components are reversibly associated and not irreversibly interlocked. In other words, pseudo-rotaxanes may fall apart. This Account focuses on a peculiar family of rotaxane-like architectures termed foldaxanes.Foldaxanes consist of a helically folded oligomer wound around a rod-like dumbbell-shaped guest. Winding of the helix around the rod thus entails an unwinding-rewinding process that creates a kinetic barrier. It follows that foldaxanes, albeit reversibly assembled, have significant lifetimes and may not fall apart while defined molecular motions are triggered. Foldaxanes based on helically folded aromatic oligoamide hosts and oligo(alkyl carbamate) guests can be designed rationally through the inclusion of complementary binding motifs on the rod and at the inner rim of the helix so that helix length and rod length match. Single helical foldaxanes (bimolecular species) and double helical foldaxanes (trimolecular species) have thus been produced as well as poly[n]foldaxanes, in which several helices bind to long rods with multiple binding stations. When the binding stations differ and are organized in a certain sequence, a complementary sequence of different stacked helices, each matching with their binding station, can be assembled, thus reproducing in an artificial system a sort of translation process.Foldaxane helix handedness may be controlled by stereogenic centers on the rod-like guest. Handedness can also be transmitted from helix to helix in polyfoldaxanes. Foldaxane formation has drastic consequences for the rod properties, including its stiffening and the restriction of the mobility of a macrocycle already interlocked on the rod. Fast translation (without dissociation) of helices along rod-like guests has been demonstrated. Because of the helical nature of the hosts, translation may be accompanied by rotation in various sorts of screw-like motions. The possibility, on longer time scales, for the helix to dissociate from and reassociate to the rod has allowed for the design of complex, kinetically controlled supramolecular pathways of a helix on a rod. Furthermore, the design of helices with a directionality, that is, with two distinct termini, that bind to nonsymmetrical rod-like guests in a defined orientation makes it possible to also control the orientation of molecular motion. Altogether, foldaxanes constitute a distinct and full-of-potential family of rotaxane-like architectures that possess designer structures and allow orchestration of the time scales of various supramolecular events.

Distinctive features and challenges in catenane chemistry

From being an aesthetic molecular object to a building block for the construction of molecular machines, catenanes and related mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) continue to attract immense interest in many research areas. Catenane chemistry is closely tied to that of rotaxanes and knots, and involves concepts like mechanical bonds, chemical topology and co-conformation that are unique to these molecules. Yet, because of their different topological structures and mechanical bond properties, there are some fundamental differences between the chemistry of catenanes and that of rotaxanes and knots although the boundary is sometimes blurred. Clearly distinguishing these differences, in aspects of bonding, structure, synthesis and properties, between catenanes and other MIMs is therefore of fundamental importance to understand their chemistry and explore the new opportunities from mechanical bonds.

Discrete Platinum(II) Metallacycles with Inner- and Outer-Modified 9,10-Distyrylanthracene: Design, Self-Assembly, and Luminescence Properties

To completely unravel the relationship between structures and luminescence properties of inner- and outer-modified metallacycles, two rhombic metallacycles S1 and S2 with 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) were constructed herein via the design of DSA moieties on the inside or outside of metallacycles. Similar building blocks of the two metallacycles led to the same emission wavelengths in a dilute solution. In contrast, their fluorescence emissions in the aggregation and solid states were significantly different and revealed interesting emission behaviors from structures with inner- and outer-modified design. Finally, based on their luminescence properties, a tunable solid-state fluorescence emissive material was easily obtained by the mixing of two supramolecules in different ratios. This unique design suggested that the modified position of fluorophores exerts a key impact on the adjustment of luminescence from a dilute solution to the aggregated state and will be of great significance for the development of luminescent materials based on supramolecules.

Design and Self-Assembly of Macrocycles with Metals at the Corners Based on Dissymmetric Terpyridine Ligands

Terpyridine-based discrete supramolecular architectures with metal ions in the corners have rarely been reported. Herein, we report two dissymmetric terpyridyl ligands LA and LB decorated at the 5-position and 4-position of terpyridine respectively. The complexes constructed by the self-assembly of LA and LB with Zn(II) exhibit hand-circle-like structures. Moreover, all Zn(II) are successfully fixed in the corners. A series of dimeric to hexameric macrocycles is obtained by head-to-tail connections with changing concentration. This work will pave the way for preparation of more elaborate self-assembled structures based on dissymetric ligands.

Supramolecular template-directed synthesis of triazole oligomers

Sandwich complexes formed by two zinc porphyrins and a diamine ligand (DABCO) have been used as a supramolecular template to direct the synthesis of triazole oligomers. Monomer units equipped with two polymerizable functional groups, an alkyne and an azide, were attached to the template via ester bonds between a phenol unit on the monomer and benzoic acid units on the porphyrin. Self-assembly of the zinc porphyrins by addition of DABCO led to a supramolecular complex containing four of the monomer units, two on each porphyrin. CuAAC oligomerisation was carried out in the presence of a chain capping agent to prevent intermolecular reactions between the templated products, which carry reactive chain ends. The templated-directed oligomerisation resulted in selective formation of a duplex, which contains two identical chains of triazole oligomers connecting the porphyrin linkers. The effective molarity for the intramolecular CuAAC reactions on the template is 3–9 mM, and because the triazole backbone has a direction, the product duplex was obtained as a 4 : 1 mixture of the parallel and antiparallel isomers. Hydrolysis of the ester bonds connecting the oligomers to the template gave a single product, the phenol 2-mer, in excellent yield. The introduction of a supramolecular element into the template considerably broadens the scope of the covalent template-directed oligomerisation methodology that we previously developed for the replication of sequence information in synthetic oligomers.

A supramolecular metalloporphyrin assembly was used as a disposable template for controlling the oligomerisation of covalently attached monomer building blocks to give a linear oligomeric product that is not accessible via untemplated reactions.

Macrocyclic vs. [2]catenane btp structures: influence of (aryl) substitution on the self templation of btp ligands in macrocyclic synthesis

The synthesis of four 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (btp) olefin based ligands 3, 4, 11 and 12 is described and their attempted use to form mechanically interlocked molecules using ring closing metatheses (RCM) reactions. The btp ligands were modified in two ways, in 3 and 4 the aryl substitution pattern was changed from 4^th position to 3^rd position and in the case of 11 and 12, the arms were replaced with aliphatic chains. Our study demonstrates that for all four ligands, the RCM reactions only result in the formation of macrocyclic structures, which in three of the cases, were structurally characterised in both solution (using NMR and HRMS) and in the solid-state using X-ray crystallography. NMR studies were also carried out to investigate if these ligands could preorganise in solution via hydrogen bonding interactions. This study provides a handle of how such precursor substitution can be used to direct the formation of macrocycles or mechanically interlocked structures.

A Hydrogen-Bonded Ravel Assembled by Anion Coordination

Anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is showing increasing power in the construction of anionic supramolecular architectures. Herein, by expanding the anion centers from oxoanion (phosphate or sulfate) to organic tris-carboxylates, an Archimedean solid (truncated tetrahedron) and a highly entangled, double-walled tetrahedron featuring a ravel topology have been assembled with tris-bis(urea) ligands. The results demonstrate the promising ability of tris-carboxylates as new anion coordination centers in constructing novel topologies with increasing complexity and diversity compared to phosphate or sulfate ions on account of the modifiable size and easy functionalization character of these organic anions.

Self-Assembly Synthesis of a [2]Catenane CoII Single-Molecule Magnet

We describe herein the self-assembly synthesis of an octanuclear Co^II [2]catenane {[Co₄ (H₂ L)₆ ]₂ ¹⁶⁺ } formed by the mechanical interlocking of two {[Co₄ (H₂ L)₆ ]⁸⁺ } rectangles of unprecedented topology. Subtle manipulation of the synthetic conditions allows the isolation of a mixed-valence [Co₂ ^III /Co₂ ^II ]¹⁰⁺ non-catenated rectangle. The Co^II centers in the [2]catenane exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetic moment, i. e. single-molecule magnet properties, dominated by quantum tunneling and Raman relaxation processes. This work shows that metallo-supramolecular chemistry can precisely control the organization of single-molecule magnets in topologically complex arrangements.

Chemistry on the Complex: Derivatization of TiO4 N2 -Based Complexes and Application to Multi-Step Synthesis

The chemistry on octahedral TiO₄ N₂ -complexes is described. The Ti(IV)-based precursors are composed of two 3,3'-diphenyl-2,2'-biphenolato ligands (1) and one substituted 1,10-phenanthroline ligand (2-5). The application of imine condensation, palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation or copper-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition allowed the grafting of various new groups onto these species. In particular Sonogashira reactions permitted to observe an excellent conversion of the starting complexes. This systematic study enabled to compile the factors required to preserve the framework of the complexes in the course of a chemical transformation. Thanks to this chemistry realized on the complex, the Ti(1)₂ fragment was used as a protecting group to develop a multi-step synthesis of a bis-phenanthroline compound (12), for which the synthesis without this protection failed. Thus, a dinuclear complex [Ti₂ (1)₄ (12)] was first prepared starting from complex precursor bearing an acetylenic function via a Hay coupling reaction. This was followed by a deprotection step affording 12. Overall, this work illustrates how the Ti(1)₂ fragment could be an useful tool for the preparation of unprecedented diimine compounds.

Can 2-Pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole "Click" Ligands be Used to Develop Cu(I)/Cu(II) Molecular Switches?

Molecular switching processes are important in a range of areas including the development of molecular machines. While there are numerous organic switching systems available, there are far less examples that exploit inorganic materials. The most common inorganic switching system remains the copper(I)/copper(II) switch developed by Sauvage and co-workers over 20 years ago. Herein, we examine if bidentate 2-(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (pytri) and tridentate 2,6-bis[(4-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)methyl]pyridine (tripy) moieties can be used to replace the more commonly exploited polypyridyl ligands 2,2'-bypyridine (bpy)/1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2';6',2″-terpyridine (terpy) in a copper(I)/(II) switching system. Two new ditopic ligands that feature bidentate (pytri, L1 or bpytri, L2) and tridentate tripy metal binding pockets were synthesized and used to generate a family of heteroleptic copper(I) and copper(II) 6,6'-dimesityl-2,2'-bipyridine (diMesbpy) complexes. Additionally, we synthesized a series of model copper(I) and copper(II) diMesbpy complexes. A combination of techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and UV-vis spectroscopies, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography was used to examine the behavior of the compounds. It was found that L1 and L2 formed [(diMesbpy)Cu(L1 or L2)]²⁺ complexes where the copper(II) diMesbpy unit was coordinated exclusively in the tridenate tripy binding site. However, when the ligands (L1 and L2) were complexed with copper(I) diMesbpy units, a complex mixture was obtained. NMR and MS data indicated that a 1:1 stoichiometry of [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ and either L1 or L2 generated three complexes in solution, the dimetallic [(diMesbpy)₂Cu₂(L1 or L2)]²⁺ and the monometallic [(diMesbpy)Cu(L1 or L2)]⁺ isomers where the [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ unit is coordinated to either the bidentate or tridentate tripy binding sites of the ditopic ligands. The dimetallic [(diMesbpy)₂Cu₂(L1 or L2)](PF₆)₂ complexes were structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Both complexes feature a [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ coordinated to the bidentate (pytri or bpytri) pocket of the ditopic ligands (L1 or L2), as expected. They also feature a second [Cu(diMesbpy)]⁺ coordinated to the nominally tridentate tripy binding site in a four-coordinate hypodentate κ²-fashion. Competition experiments with model complexes showed that the binding strength of the bidentate pytri is similar to that of the κ²-tripy ligand, leading to the lack of selectivity. The results suggest that the pytri/tripy and bpytri/tripy ligand pairs cannot be used as replacements for the more common bpy/phen-terpy partners due to the lack of selectivity in the copper(I) state.

Channels with Helical Modulation Display Stereospecific Sensitivity for Chiral Superstructures

By means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we explore chiral sensitivity of confining spaces modelled as helical channels to chiral superstructures represented by polymer knots. The simulations show that helical channels exhibit stereosensitivity to chiral knots localized on linear chains by effect of external pulling force and also to knots embedded on circular chains. The magnitude of the stereoselective effect is stronger for torus knots, the effect is weaker in the case of twist knots, and amphichiral knots do exhibit no chiral effects. The magnitude of the effect can be tuned by the so-far investigated radius of the helix, the pitch of the helix and the strength of the pulling force. The model is aimed to simulate and address a range of practical situations that may occur in experimental settings such as designing of nanotechnological devices for the detection of topological state of molecules, preparation of new gels with tailor made stereoselective properties, or diffusion of knotted DNA in biological conditions.

Topological and physical links in soft matter systems

Linking, or multicomponent topological entanglement, is ubiquitous in soft matter systems, from mixtures of polymers and DNA filaments packedin vivoto interlocked line defects in liquid crystals and intertwined synthetic molecules. Yet, it is only relatively recently that theoretical and experimental advancements have made it possible to probe such entanglements and elucidate their impact on the physical properties of the systems. Here, we review the state-of-the-art of this rapidly expanding subject and organize it as follows. First, we present the main concepts and notions, from topological linking to physical linking and then consider the salient manifestations of molecular linking, from synthetic to biological ones. We next cover the main physical models addressing mutual entanglements in mixtures of polymers, both linear and circular. Finally, we consider liquid crystals, fluids and other non-filamentous systems where topological or physical entanglements are observed in defect or flux lines. We conclude with a perspective on open challenges.

Piecewise-linear embeddings of knots and links with rotoinversion symmetry

This article describes the simplest members of an infinite family of knots and links that have achiral piecewise-linear embeddings in which linear segments (sticks) meet at corners. The structures described are all corner- and stick-2-transitive - the smallest possible for achiral knots.

Topoly: Python package to analyze topology of polymers

The increasing role of topology in (bio)physical properties of matter creates a need for an efficient method of detecting the topology of a (bio)polymer. However, the existing tools allow one to classify only the simplest knots and cannot be used in automated sample analysis. To answer this need, we created the Topoly Python package. This package enables the distinguishing of knots, slipknots, links and spatial graphs through the calculation of different topological polynomial invariants. It also enables one to create the minimal spanning surface on a given loop, e.g. to detect a lasso motif or to generate random closed polymers. It is capable of reading various file formats, including PDB. The extensive documentation along with test cases and the simplicity of the Python programming language make it a very simple to use yet powerful tool, suitable even for inexperienced users. Replication of Sequence Information in Synthetic Oligomers

The holy grail identified by Orgel in his 1995 Account was the development of novel chemical systems that evolve using reactions in which replication and information transfer occur together. There has been some success in the adaption of nucleic acids to make artificial analogues and in templating oligomerization reactions to form synthetic homopolymers, but replication of sequence information in synthetic polymers remains a major unsolved problem. In this Account, we describe our efforts in this direction based on a covalent base-pairing strategy to transfer sequence information between a parent template and a daughter copy. Oligotriazoles, which carry information as a sequence of phenol and benzoic acid side chains, have been prepared from bifunctional monomers equipped with an azide and an alkyne. Formation of esters between phenols and benzoic acids is used as the equivalent of nucleic base pairing to covalently attach monomer building blocks to a template oligomer. Sequential protection of the phenol side chains on the template, ester coupling of the benzoic acid side chains, and deprotection and ester coupling of the phenol side chains allow quantitative selective base-pair formation on a mixed sequence template. Copper catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) is then used to oligomerize the monomers on the template. Finally, cleavage of the ester base pairs in the product duplex by hydrolysis releases the copy strand. This covalent template-directed synthesis strategy has been successfully used to copy the information encoded in a trimer template into a sequence-complementary oligomer in high yield.The use of covalent base pairing provides opportunities to manipulate the nature of the information transferred in the replication process. By using traceless linkers to connect the phenol and benzoic acid units, it is possible to carry out direct replication, reciprocal replication, and mutation. These preliminary results are promising, and methods have been developed to eliminate some of the side reactions that compete with the CuAAC process that zips up the duplex. In situ end-capping of the copy strand was found to be an effective general method for blocking intermolecular reactions between product duplexes. By selecting an appropriate concentration of an external capping agent, it is also possible to intercept macrocyclization of the reactive chain ends in the product duplex. The other side reaction observed is miscoupling of monomer units that are not attached to adjacent sites on the template, and optimization is required to eliminate these reactions. We are still some way from an evolvable synthetic polymer, but the chemical approach to molecular replication outlined here has some promise.

Russian-Doll-Like Molecular Cubes

Nanosized cage-within-cage compounds represent a synergistic molecular self-assembling form of three-dimensional architecture that has received particular research focus. Building multilayered ultralarge cages to simulate complicated virus capsids is believed to be a tough synthetic challenge. Here, we synthesize two large double-shell supramolecular cages by facile self-assembly of presynthesized metal-organic hexatopic terpyridine ligands with metal ions. Differing from the mixture of prisms formed from the inner tritopic ligand, the redesigned metal-organic hexatopic ligands bearing high geometric constraints that led to the exclusive formation of discrete double-shell structures. These two unique nested cages are composed of inner cubes (5.1 nm) and outer huge truncated cubes (12.0 and 13.2 nm) with six large bowl-shape subcages distributed on six faces. The results with molecular weights of 75 232 and 77 667 Da were among the largest synthetic cage-in-cage supramolecules reported to date. The composition, size and shape were unambiguously characterized by a combination of ¹H NMR, DOSY, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, TEM, AFM, and SAXS. This work provides an interesting model for functional recognition, delivery, and detection of various guest molecules in the field of supramolecular materials.

A molecular endless (74) knot

Current strategies for the synthesis of molecular knots focus on twisting, folding and/or threading molecular building blocks. Here we report that Zn(II) or Fe(II) ions can be used to weave ligand strands to form a woven 3 × 3 molecular grid. We found that the process requires tetrafluoroborate anions to template the assembly of the interwoven grid by binding within the square cavities formed between the metal-coordinated criss-crossed ligands. The strand ends of the grid can subsequently be joined through within-grid alkene metathesis reactions to form a topologically trivial macrocycle (unknot), a doubly interlocked [2]catenane (Solomon link) and a knot with seven crossings in a 258-atom-long closed loop. This 7₄ knot topology corresponds to that of an endless knot, which is a basic motif of Celtic interlace, the smallest Chinese knot and one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism and Hinduism. The weaving of molecular strands within a discrete layer by anion-template metal-ion coordination opens the way for the synthesis of other molecular knot topologies and to woven polymer materials.
