Fabrication of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene Oxide Sheets for the Effective Removal of Lead (Pb2+) from Water

Mesoporous silica nanoparticle-decorated graphene oxide nanosheets (MSiO2-GO) were synthesized and characterized for the active removal of lead (Pb2+) from the water. MSiO2 NPs were prepared via an ultrasonication method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), and GO sheets were obtained via a modified Hummers' method. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy specified the composition of MSiO2 NPs and GO sheets. The surface charge and texture of the MSiO2-GO nanosheets were obtained using the ζ-potential technique and by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The relative cytotoxicity test of MSiO2 NPs and MSiO2-GO nanosheets was performed on Murine Raw 264.7 cells before implying the treatment of water. Adsorption of Pb2+ ions on MSiO2-GO nanosheets was examined at various parameters such as different aqueous pH values (2.0-10.0), MSiO2-GO nanosheet doses (3, 5, 10, 15, 20 mg L-1), time intervals (2-30 min), and temperatures (25-45 °C). About 90% of Pb2+ ions were removed from water within 30 min (MSiO2-GO dose: 15 mg L-1; initial Pb2+ ions: 50 mg L-1; temperature: 25 °C; shaking speed: 200 rpm). The maximal uptake of Pb2+ was obtained at solution pH 6.0. Pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetic rate equations describe the sorption dynamic data. Pb2+ sorption isotherms were modeled using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The possible mechanism of binding of Pb2+ ions onto MSiO2-GO nanosheets has been discussed. The exhausted MSiO2-GO nanosheets were successfully regenerated using 0.005 M HNO3 as the desorbing agent.

Graphene oxide microstructure control of electrosprayed thin films

The graphene oxide (GO) microstructure, in terms of flake distribution, folding, and crumpling, in thin films affects properties such as electrical conductivity and optical transparency after GO reduction. A thin film can be tailored to the user's application if the microstructure resulting from different deposition methods can be controlled. In this work, we compare the microstructures of GO coatings created through electrospray deposition (ESD) with random deposition processes. The comparisons include both MATLAB simulations and a dip coating process. The microstructure of ESD GO thin films can be altered by changing the distance between the nozzle and the substrate. We developed a semi-automatic image analysis script that analyzes scanning electron microscopy images to find effects of GO stacking or agglomeration, without the risk of human bias. A low nozzle to substrate distance creates structures of flat GO flakes, but solvent flooding the samples causes drying patterns. A high nozzle to substrate distance causes folding and crumpling of the GO flakes due to solvent evaporation, resulting in agglomerated GO on the substrate. For our ESD setup, a nozzle to substrate distance of 2-4 mm produced GO coatings with the lowest combined influence of drying effects and GO flake folding or crumpling.

Composite GO/Ceramic Membranes Prepared via Chemical Attachment: Characterisation and Gas Permeance Properties

Graphene oxide (GO) oligo-layered laminates were self-assembled on porous ceramic substrates via their simple dip-coating into aqueous GO dispersions. To augment the stability of the developed composite GO/ceramic membranes and control the morphology and stacking quality of the formed laminate, short-((3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxy silane-GLYMO, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxy silane-APTES), and long-chain (polydopamine-PDA) molecules were involved and examined as interfacial linkers. A comparative study was performed regarding the linker's capacity to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the ceramic surface and the GO deposit and affect the orientation and assemblage characteristics of the adjacent GO nanosheets that composed the formed oligo-layered laminates. Subsequently, by post-filtrating a GO/H₂O suspension through the oligo-layered laminate membranes, the respective multi-layered ones have been developed, whereas ethylenediamine (EDA) was used in the suspension as an efficient molecular linker that strongly bonds and interlocks the GO nanosheets. The definition of the best linker and approach was conducted on macroporous α-alumina disks, due to the use of inexpensive raw materials and the ability to fabricate them in the lab with high reproducibility. To validate the concept at a larger scale, while investigating the effect of the porous substrate as regards its micrometer-scale roughness and surface chemistry, specific chemical modifications that yielded membranes with the best gas permeability/selectivity performance were replicated on a commercial single-channel monolith with a ZrO₂ microfiltration layer. XRD, Raman, ATR, FESEM, and XPS analyses were conducted to study the structural, physicochemical, surface, and morphological properties of the GO/ceramic composite membranes, whereas permeance results of several gases at various temperatures and trans-membrane pressures were interpreted to shed light on the pore structural features. Concerning the short-chain linkers, the obtained results ascertain that GLYMO causes denser and more uniform assembly of GO nanosheets within the oligo-layered laminate. PDA had the same beneficial effect, as it is a macromolecule. Overall, this study shows that the development of gas-separating membranes, by just dipping the linker-modified substrate into the GO suspension, is not straightforward. The application of post-filtration contributed significantly to this target and the quality of the superficially deposited, thick GO laminate depended on this of the chemically attached oligo-layered one.

Silicon Nanodisk Huygens Metasurfaces for Portable and Low-Cost Refractive Index and Biomarker Sensing

Biomarker detection and bulk refractive index sensing are important across multiple industries ranging from early medical diagnosis to chemical process quality control. The bulky size, high cost, and complex architecture of existing refractive index and biomarker sensing technologies limit their use to highly skilled environments like hospitals, large food processing plants, and research labs. Here, we demonstrate a compact and inexpensive refractive index sensor based on resonant dielectric photonic nanoantenna arrays or metasurfaces. These dielectric resonances support Mie dipole and asymmetric resonances that shift with changes in their external environment. A single-wavelength transmission measurement in a portable (<250 in.³), low-cost (<$4000) sensor shows sensitivity to 1.9 × 10^-6 change in the fluid refractive index without the use of a spectrometer or other complex optics. Our sensor assembly allows for measurements using multiple metasurfaces with identical resonances or varying resonance types for enhanced diagnostics on the same chip. Furthermore, a 10 kDa culture filtrate peptide CFP-10, a marker for human tuberculosis, is detected with our sensor with 10 pM resolution. This system has the potential to enable facile, fast, and highly sensitive measurements with adequate limits of detection for personalized biomedical diagnoses.

Βio-Based Epoxy/Amine Reinforced with Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) or GLYMO-rGO: Study of Curing Kinetics, Mechanical Properties, Lamination and Bonding Performance

In this work, we report the synthesis and study of nanocomposites with a biobased epoxy/amine (Epilok 60-600G/Curamine 30-952) matrix reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or functionalised with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO-rGO). These graphene related materials (GRMs) were first dispersed into a Curamine hardener using bath ultrasonication, followed by the addition of epoxy resin. Curing kinetics were studied by DSC under non-isothermal and isothermal conditions. The addition of 1.5 wt% of GLYMO-rGO into the epoxy matrix was found to increase the degree of cure by up to 12% and glass transition temperature by 14 °C. Mechanical testing showed that the addition of 0.05 wt% GLYMO-rGO improves Young's modulus and tensile strength by 60% and 16%, respectively, compared to neat epoxy. Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates were prepared via hand lay up, using the nanocomposite system GRM/Epilok/Curamine as matrix, and were cut as CFRP adherents for lap shear joints. GRM/Epilok/Curamine was also used as adhesive to bond CFRP/CFRP and CFRP/aluminium adherents. The addition of 0.1 wt% GLYMO-rGO into the adhesive and CRFP adherents showed improved lap shear strength by 23.6% compared to neat resin, while in the case of CFRP/Aluminium joints the increase was 21.2%.

Novel Composite Electrode of the Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets with Gold Nanoparticles Modified by Glucose Oxidase for Electrochemical Reactions

Graphene-based composites have been widely explored for electrode and electrocatalyst materials for electrochemical energy systems. In this paper, a novel composite material of the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGON) with gold nanoparticles (NPs) (rGON-AuNP) is synthesized, and its morphology, structure, and composition are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR), Raman, and UV-Vis techniques. To confirm this material’s electrochemical activity, a glucose oxidase (GOD) is chosen as the target reagent to modify the rGON-AuNP layer to form GOD/rGON-AuNP/glassy carbon (GC) electrode. Two pairs of distinguishable redox peaks, corresponding to the redox processes of two different conformational GOD on AuNP, are observed on the cyclic voltammograms of GOD/rGON-AuNP/GC electrode. Both cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are employed to study the mechanism of direct electron transfer from GOD to GC electrode on the rGON-AuNP layer. In addition, this GOD/rGON-AuNP/GC electrode shows catalytic activity toward glucose oxidation reaction.

Oxo-Functionalized Graphene as a Cell Membrane Carrier of Nucleic Acid Probes Controlled by Aging

We applied a fluorescein-containing oligonucleotide (ON) to probe surface properties of oxidized graphene (oxo-G) and observed that graphene-like patches are formed upon aging of oxo-G, indicated by enhanced probe binding and by FTIR spectroscopic analysis. By using a recently developed fluorogenic endoperoxide (EP) probe, we confirmed that during the aging process the amount of EPs on the oxo-G surface is reduced. Furthermore, aging was found to strongly affect cell membrane carrier properties of this material. In particular, freshly prepared oxo-G does not act as a carrier, whereas oxo-G aged for 28 days at 4 °C is an excellent carrier. Based on these data we prepared an optimized oxo-G, which has a low-defect density, binds ONs, is not toxic, and acts as cell membrane carrier. We successfully applied this material to design fluorogenic probes of representative intracellular nucleic acids 28S rRNA and β-actin-mRNA. The results will help to standardize oxidized graphene derivatives for biomedical and bioanalytical applications.

Stable Ni nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide composites for the reduction of highly toxic aqueous Cr(VI) at room temperature

Inherent properties of graphene can be experienced by integrating it with different nanomaterials to form unique composite materials. Decorating the surface of graphene sheets with nanoparticles (NPs) is one of the recent approaches taken up by scientists all over the world. This article describes a simple synthesis route to preparing stable Ni NP-reduced graphene oxide (Ni-RGO) composite material. The otherwise unstable bare Ni NPs are stabilized when embedded in the RGO sheets. This synthesized composite material has a potential application in the formic acid-induced reduction of highly toxic aqueous Cr(VI) at room temperature (25 °C). The reduction of dichromate using formic acid as a reducing agent is a well-known redox reaction. However, the rate of the reaction is very slow at room temperature, which can be enhanced very significantly in the presence of Ni-RGO by introducing an intermediate redox step with formic acid. The Ni-RGO composite material is an easy to prepare, cheap, stable, reusable material that has the potential to replace costly Pd NPs used in this context. Ni-RGO is also found to be very active in enhancing the rate of reduction of other metal ions in the presence of formic acid at room temperature.
