Carbon carrier-based rapid Joule heating technology: a review on the preparation and applications of functional nanomaterials

Compared to conventional heating techniques, the carbon carrier-based rapid Joule heating (CJH) method is a new class of technologies that offer significantly higher heating rates and ultra-high temperatures. Over the past few decades, CJH technology has spawned several techniques with similar principles for different application scenarios, including ultra-fast high temperature sintering (UHS), carbon thermal shock (CTS), and flash Joule heating (FJH), which have been widely used in material preparation research studies. Functional nanomaterials are a popular direction of research today, mainly including nanometallic materials, nanosilica materials, nanoceramic materials and nanocarbon materials. These materials exhibit unique physical, chemical, and biological properties, including a high specific surface area, strength, thermal stability, and biocompatibility, making them ideal for diverse applications across various fields. The CJH method is a remarkable approach to producing functional nanomaterials that has attracted attention for its significant advantages. This paper aims to delve into the fundamental principles of CJH and elucidate the efficient preparation of functional nanomaterials with superior properties using this technique. The paper is organized into three sections, each dedicated to introducing the process and characteristics of CJH technology for the preparation of three distinct material types: carbon-based nanomaterials, inorganic non-metallic materials, and metallic materials. We discuss the distinctions and merits of the CJH method compared to alternative techniques in the preparation of these materials, along with a thorough examination of their properties. Furthermore, the potential applications of these materials are highlighted. In conclusion, this paper concludes with a discussion on the future research trends and development prospects of CJH technology.

Effect of non-metal doping on the optoelectronic properties of ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterostructure under strain: a first-principles study

CONTEXT

In this paper, we systematically studied the effects of non-metallic element (B, C, N, O, F) doping and biaxial stretching on the photoelectric properties of ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterostructures by using the first-principles calculation method based on density functional theory. The results show that the p-type doping is realized by B, C, and N atom doping, and the n-type doping is realized by O and F atom doping. The doping of B and C atoms produces impurity energy levels in the band gap, which affects the conductivity of the heterostructure. The band gap of N and O atom-doped heterostructures increases under tensile strain, but it is still a direct band gap. The analysis of the optical properties of the heterostructures shows that the doping of non-metallic atoms can adjust the optical absorption rate and reflectivity of the heterostructures. Under the action of tensile strain, the optical properties of the doped heterostructures have changed significantly in the low-energy region. This article provides a theoretical basis for the future application of ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterostructures.

METHOD

This paper uses the first-principles calculation method based on density functional theory. The PBE exchange-correlation functional based on generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is selected for the specific calculation, and the crystal structure is geometrically optimized by the ultrasoft pseudopotential method. It is verified that when the cutoff energy of the ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterostructure is 500 eV, the K-point grid is selected to be 10 × 10 × 2 with the lowest energy, so the cutoff energy is selected to be 500 eV. The K-point grid is selected to be 10 × 10 × 2. The convergence limits for structural optimization are as follows: the maximum force between atoms is 0.01 eV/Å, the convergence threshold of the maximum energy change is set to 10-9 eV/atom, and the convergence threshold of the maximum displacement is 0.001 Å. In order to avoid the influence of atomic periodic motion between different atomic layers, a vacuum layer of 20 Å is added in the vertical direction. Considering the interaction of vdW between the interfaces, the DFT-D2 method is used to verify. The optical properties were calculated by the random phase approximation method, and the K-point grid was selected as 12 × 12 × 2.

Single-Molecule Fluorescence Probes Interactions between Photoactive Protein-Silver Nanowire Conjugate and Monolayer Graphene

In this work, we apply single-molecule fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy to probe plasmon-enhanced fluorescence and Förster resonance energy transfer in a nanoscale assemblies. The structure where the interplay between these two processes was present consists of photoactive proteins conjugated with silver nanowires and deposited on a monolayer graphene. By comparing the results of continuous-wave and time-resolved fluorescence microscopy acquired for this structure with those obtained for the reference samples, where proteins were coupled with either a graphene monolayer or silver nanowires, we find clear indications of the interplay between plasmonic enhancement and the energy transfer to graphene. Namely, fluorescence intensities calculated for the structure, where proteins were coupled to graphene only, are less than for the structure playing the central role in this study, containing both silver nanowires and graphene. Conversely, decay times extracted for the latter are shorter compared to a protein-silver nanowire conjugate, pointing towards emergence of the energy transfer. Overall, the results show that monitoring the optical properties of single emitters in a precisely designed hybrid nanostructure provides an elegant way to probe even complex combination of interactions at the nanoscale.

The Future of Graphene: Preparation from Biomass Waste and Sports Applications

At present, the main raw material for producing graphene is graphite ore. However, researchers actively seek alternative resources due to their high cost and environmental problems. Biomass waste has attracted much attention due to its carbon-rich structure and renewability, emerging as a potential raw material for graphene production to be used in sports equipment. However, further progress is required on the quality of graphene produced from waste biomass. This paper, therefore, summarizes the properties, structures, and production processes of graphene and its derivatives, as well as the inherent advantages of biomass waste-derived graphene. Finally, this paper reviews graphene's importance and application prospects in sports since this wonder material has made sports equipment available with high-strength and lightweight quality. Moreover, its outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity is exploited to prepare wearable sensors to collect more accurate sports data, thus helping to improve athletes' training levels and competitive performance. Although the large-scale production of biomass waste-derived graphene has yet to be realized, it is expected that its application will expand to various other fields due to the associated low cost and environmental friendliness of the preparation technique.

Adsorption and Sensing Mechanism of a nTiO2 Particle (n = 1-3)-Doped MoTe2 Monolayer to Faulty and Hazardous Gases in the Underground Cableway

With the rapid growth of the economy and industrial technology, vigoroso and stable power distribution networks have gradually been established worldwide. Among these networks, underground cables play a crucial role in the distribution process, determining the overall electrical stability of entire cities. Based on density functional theory, this paper first proposes a TiO2 particle-doped MoTe2 monolayer to detect and eliminate these faults and hazardous gases within the underground cableway. The band structure, total density of states, projected density of states, and differential charge density are analyzed. The results demonstrate that the presence of TiO2 particles significantly enhances the adsorption capacity of MoTe2, diminishes the electrical conductivity of the doping system, and heightens electron activity in the doping reaction zone. The best adsorption performance is achieved in the case of two-particle doping. Furthermore, the modified MoTe2 exhibits an enhanced capability for capturing SO2 and SOF2, with the adsorption mechanism classified as physical-chemical adsorption. This work not only introduces a novel surface modification method for a MoTe2 monolayer but also provides a substantial data set to support the design and production of efficient sensors used in the underground cableway. These contributions further enhance the safety and stability of power systems and ensure human health.

Synergistic Effects of Carbon Vacancies in Conjunction with Phosphorus Dopant across Bilayer Graphene for the Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Bilayer graphene (BLG) exhibits distinct physical properties under external influences, such as torsion and structural defects, setting it apart from monolayer graphene. In this study, we explore the synergistic effects of carbon vacancies, in conjunction with phosphorus dopants, across BLG, focusing on their impact on structural, magnetic, electrical, and hydrogen adsorption properties. Our findings reveal that the substitutional doping of a phosphorus atom into a single carbon vacancy in a graphene layer induces substantial structural distortion in BLG. In contrast, doping phosphorus into a double vacancy maintains the flat structure of graphene layers. These distinct layer structures affect the electron distribution and spin arrangement, leading to varied electronic configurations and intriguing magnetic behaviors. Furthermore, the presence of abundant unsaturated electrons around the vacancy promotes the capture and bonding of hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen adsorption on BLG results in substantial orbital hybridization, accompanied by significant charge transfer. The calculated Gibbs free energies for hydrogen adsorption on BLG range from -0.08 to 0.09 eV, indicating exceptional catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction. These findings carry implications for optimizing the properties of graphene layers, making them highly desirable for applications such as catalysis.

Strain-induced modification in thermal properties of monolayer 1 T-ZrS2 and ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterojunction

CONTEXT

This paper systematically analyzes the phonon dispersion curves of single-layer ZrS2, ZrSe2, and ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterostructures under different strains. The phonon spectra and thermal parameters of the three structures were obtained based on the density functional perturbation theory method. The upper limits of strain that different monolayers and heterojunctions can withstand were studied. The monolayers ZrSe2 and ZrS2 can withstand up to 8% biaxial tensile strain, and the ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterojunction can withstand up to 6% biaxial tensile strain. In addition, the van der Waals force of the heterojunction may cause phonon tearing in the vertical direction. The application of biaxial tensile strain can adjust the thermal properties of the system to a large extent, which is similar to the strain effect in the pristine case. When the temperature rises, the entropy enthalpy of the three structures also gradually increases, the free energy gradually decreases, and the heat capacity of the system gradually increases until it tends to be stable. Taking single-layer ZrS2 as an example, we analyzed the change curve of thermal properties of single-layer ZrS2 under tensile strain. The results show that with the gradual increase of strain, the crystal's entropy, enthalpy, and free energy change differently. In addition, the heat capacity increases slowly under high temperatures. When all systems reach the limit strain, the phonon spectrum appears to have an imaginary frequency, and the thermal properties decrease significantly.

METHODS

This paper uses the first-principle calculation method based on density functional theory, and the PBE exchange-correlation function based on generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is selected for a specific calculation. The density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculates the full kinetic matrix. Because the lattice constants of ZrS2 and ZrSe2 are similar and have similar periodicity, the corresponding unit cells are used for structural optimization and property calculation. The Brillouin zone is integrated using the K points generated by the Monkhorst-pack method. For single-layers ZrS2 and ZrSe2, 8 × 8 × 1 K-point grid is selected, and for ZrS2/ZrSe2 heterojunction, 8 × 8 × 2 K-point grid is selected. A vacuum layer of 30 Å was added in the vertical direction to avoid interlayer interaction. The non-conservative pseudopotential method is used to optimize the structure, and the optimization convergence is set as follows: the cutoff energy is set to 700 eV, the convergence threshold of the maximum force between atoms is 0.01 eV/Å, the convergence threshold of the maximum energy change is set to 1 × 10-9 eV, and the convergence threshold of the maximum displacement is 0.001 Å.

Graphene-based chemiresistive gas sensors

Gas sensors allow the monitoring of the chemical environment of humans, which is often crucial for their wellbeing or even survival. Miniaturization, reversibility, and selectivity are some of the key challenges for serial use of chemical sensors. This tutorial review describes critical aspects when using nanomaterials as sensing substrates for the application in chemiresistive gas sensors. Graphene has been shown to be a promising candidate, as it allows gas sensors to be operated at room temperature, possibly saving large amounts of energy. In this review, an overview is given on the general mechanisms for gas-sensitive semiconducting materials and the implications of doping and functionalization on the sensing parameters of chemiresistive devices. It shows in detail how different challenges, like sensitivity, response time, reversibility and selectivity have been approached by material development and operation modes. In addition, perspectives from the area of data analysis and intelligent algorithms are presented, which can further enhance these sensors' usability in the field.

Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene Materials as Xenobiotics in Living Systems: Is There a Consensus on Their Safety?

Carbon nanotubes and graphene are two types of nanomaterials that have unique properties and potential applications in various fields, including biomedicine, energy storage, and gas sensing. However, there is still a debate about the safety of these materials, and there is yet to be a complete consensus on their potential risks to human health and the environment. While some studies have provided recommendations for occupational exposure limits, more research is needed to fully understand the potential risks of these materials to human health and the environment. In this review, we will try to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of using carbon nanotubes and graphene as well as composites containing them in the context of their biocompatibility and toxicity to living systems. In addition, we overview current policy guidelines and technical regulations regarding the safety of carbon-based nanomaterials.

Applications of flexible electronics related to cardiocerebral vascular system

Ensuring accessible and high-quality healthcare worldwide requires field-deployable and affordable clinical diagnostic tools with high performance. In recent years, flexible electronics with wearable and implantable capabilities have garnered significant attention from researchers, which functioned as vital clinical diagnostic-assisted tools by real-time signal transmission from interested targets in vivo. As the most crucial and complex system of human body, cardiocerebral vascular system together with heart-brain network attracts researchers inputting profuse and indefatigable efforts on proper flexible electronics design and materials selection, trying to overcome the impassable gulf between vivid organisms and rigid inorganic units. This article reviews recent breakthroughs in flexible electronics specifically applied to cardiocerebral vascular system and heart-brain network. Relevant sensor types and working principles, electronics materials selection and treatment methods are expounded. Applications of flexible electronics related to these interested organs and systems are specially highlighted. Through precedent great working studies, we conclude their merits and point out some limitations in this emerging field, thus will help to pave the way for revolutionary flexible electronics and diagnosis assisted tools development.

First-principles study of two-dimensional half-metallic ferromagnetism in CrSiSe4monolayer

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic (FM) half-metallic materials have attracted intensive attention due to their unique electronic and magnetic properties and potential applications in spintronic devices. In this study, we predicted a stable 2D half-metallic material monolayer CrSiSe4using first-principles density functional theory. The structure, electronic and magnetic properties were systematically studied. The calculations show that the monolayer CrSiSe4is a dynamically stable FM half-metallic material. The spin-dependent transport properties and the Curie temperature up to 239 K are demonstrated. The spin band gap of monolayer CrSiSe4was about 0.83 eV by the the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof function calculation. The magnetic anisotropy energy of each Cr atom in the monolayer of CrSiSe4is-552.3μeV. When the applied biaxial tensile strain is greater than 2%, monolayer CrSiSe4spin-up conduction band and valence band will show a band gap at the Fermi level, and the electronic properties change from a half-metal to a semiconductor. Thus, the monolayer CrSiSe4can provide an ideal candidate material for exploring 2D magnetic and spintronics experiments.

Two-Dimensional Biphenylene-Based Carbon Allotrope Family with High Potassium Storage Ability

The development of new carbon materials with novel properties and excellent applications is essential and urgent in many fields, such as potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). In this study, a family of 30 two-dimensional biphenylene carbon allotropes (2D-BCAs) have been systematically extended in theory. The energies of these allotropes are slightly higher than that of graphene, which can be well described by a quantitative energy equation. The 2D-BCAs show high synthesizability consistent with the experimental biphenylene network via "HF-zipping" reactions. The 2D-BCAs are metallic or semimetallic. Six representative 2D-BCAs exhibit good lattice dynamical and thermal stability, excellent anisotropic mechanical properties, and ORR catalytic activity. Moreover, the selected 2D-BCAs demonstrate ultrahigh theoretical potassium-storage capacities of 1116-1489 mAh·g-1, low migration barriers of 0.03-0.22 eV, and low open-circuit voltages of 1.10-0.02 V. The remarkable properties render 2D-BCAs as promising anode materials in PIBs, electrocatalysts, and conductors in electronics and iontronics.

Recent Advances in Carbon-Based Electrodes for Energy Storage and Conversion

Carbon-based nanomaterials, including graphene, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes, are attracting significant attention as promising materials for next-generation energy storage and conversion applications. They possess unique physicochemical properties, such as structural stability and flexibility, high porosity, and tunable physicochemical features, which render them well suited in these hot research fields. Technological advances at atomic and electronic levels are crucial for developing more efficient and durable devices. This comprehensive review provides a state-of-the-art overview of these advanced carbon-based nanomaterials for various energy storage and conversion applications, focusing on supercapacitors, lithium as well as sodium-ion batteries, and hydrogen evolution reactions. Particular emphasis is placed on the strategies employed to enhance performance through nonmetallic elemental doping of N, B, S, and P in either individual doping or codoping, as well as structural modifications such as the creation of defect sites, edge functionalization, and inter-layer distance manipulation, aiming to provide the general guidelines for designing these devices by the above approaches to achieve optimal performance. Furthermore, this review delves into the challenges and future prospects for the advancement of carbon-based electrodes in energy storage and conversion.

Nanomaterials as multimodal photothermal agents (PTAs) against 'Superbugs'

Superbugs, also known as multidrug-resistant bacteria, have become a lethal and persistent threat due to their unresponsiveness toward conventional antibiotics. The main reason for this is that superbugs can rapidly mutate and restrict any foreign drug/molecule in their vicinity. Herein, nanomaterial-mediated therapies have set their path and shown burgeoning efficiency toward the ablation of superbugs. Notably, treatment modalities like photothermal therapy (PTT) have shown prominence in killing multidrug-resistant bacteria with their ability to generate local heat shock-mediated hyperthermia in such species. However, photothermal treatment has some serious limitations, such as high cost, complexity, and even toxicity to some extent. Hence, it is important to resolve such shortcomings of PTTs as they provide substantial tissue penetration. This is why multimodal PTTs have emerged and taken over this domain of research for the past few years. In this work, we have summarized and critically reviewed such exceptional works of recent times and provided a perspective to enhance their efficiencies. Profoundly, we discuss the design rationales of some novel photothermal agents (PTAs) and shed light on their mechanisms. Finally, challenges for PTT-derived multimodal therapy are presented, and capable synergistic bactericidal prospects are anticipated.

Membranes Coated with Graphene-Based Materials: A Review

Graphene is a popular material with outstanding properties due to its single layer. Graphene and its oxide have been put to the test as nano-sized building components for separation membranes with distinctive structures and adjustable physicochemical attributes. Graphene-based membranes have exhibited excellent water and gas purification abilities, which have garnered the spotlight over the past decade. This work aims to examine the most recent science and engineering cutting-edge advances of graphene-based membranes in regard to design, production and use. Additional effort will be directed towards the breakthroughs in synthesizing graphene and its composites to create various forms of membranes, such as nanoporous layers, laminates and graphene-based compounds. Their efficiency in separating and decontaminating water via different techniques such as cross-linking, layer by layer and coating will also be explored. This review intends to offer comprehensive, up-to-date information that will be useful to scientists of multiple disciplines interested in graphene-based membranes.

Graphene-Based Nanocomposites as Antibacterial, Antiviral and Antifungal Agents

Over the past decade, there have been many interesting studies in the scientific literature about the interaction of graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites with microorganisms to tackle antimicrobial resistance. These studies have reported variable intensities of biocompatibility and selectivity for the nanocomposites toward a specific strain, but it is widely believed that graphene nanocomposites have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities. Such antibacterial activity is due to several mechanisms by which graphene nanocomposites can act on cells including stimulating oxidative stress; disrupting membranes due to sharp edges; greatly changing core structure mechanical strength and coarseness. However, the underlying mechanisms of graphene nanocomposites as antiviral and antifungal agents remain relatively scarce. In this review, recent advances in the synthesis, functional tailoring, and antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal applications of graphene nanocomposites are summarized. The synthesis of graphene materials and graphene-based polymeric nanocomposites with techniques such as pressurized gyration, electrospinning, chemical vapor deposition, and layer-by-layer self-assembly is first introduced. Then, the antimicrobial mechanisms of graphene membranes are presented and demonstrated typical in vitro and in vivo studies on the use of graphene nanocomposites for antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal applications. Finally, the review describes the biosafety, current limitations, and potential of antimicrobial graphene-based nanocomposites.

Optoelectronic properties and applications of two-dimensional layered semiconductor van der Waals heterostructures: perspective from theory

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) which combine two different materials together have attracted extensive research attentions due to the promising applications in optoelectronic and electronic devices, the investigations from theoretical simulations can not only predict the novel properties and the interfacial coupling, but also provide essential guidance for experimental verification and fabrications. This review summarizes the recent theoretical studies on electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional semiconducting vdWHs. The characteristics of different band alignments are discussed, together with the optoelectronic modulations from external fields and the promising applications in solar cells, tunneling field-effect transistors and photodetectors. At the end of the review, the further perspective and possible research problems of the vdWHs are also presented.

Titanium Coated with Graphene and Niobium Pentoxide for Biomaterial Applications

Graphene and niobium oxide are used in biomaterial coatings. In this work, commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) was coated with graphene oxide (GO), niobium pentoxide (Nb₂O₅), and a mixture of both materials (NbGO) by the electrochemical deposition method. The surface morphology, roughness, wettability, and degradation of coated and uncoated samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, interferometry, and contact angle. The results showed that the specimens coated with NbGO (cp Ti-NbGO) showed the highest surface roughness (Ra = 0.64 μm) and were hydrophobic. The contact (θ) angle between water and the surface of uncoated specimens (cp Ti), coated with GO (cp Ti-GO), coated with a mixture with GO and Nb₂O₅) (cp Ti-NbGO), and coated with Nb₂O₅ were 50.74°, 44.35°, 55.86°, and 100.35°, respectively. The electrochemical corrosion tests showed that coating with graphene oxide increased the corrosion resistance and coating with Nb₂O₅ decreased the corrosion resistance. The negative effect of the effect of Nb₂O₅ coating in corrosion resistance compensated for the release of Nb₂O₅, which helps osseointegration, increasing cell viability, and proliferation of osteoblasts. The NbGO coating may be a good way to combine the bactericidal effect of graphene oxide with the osseointegration effect of Nb₂O₅.

N-doped graphene for electrocatalytic O2 and CO2 reduction

The electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are important approaches to realize energy conversion and sustainable development. However, sluggish reaction kinetics severely hinders the practical application of devices related to these reactions. N-doped graphene (NG) with unique properties exhibits great potential in catalyzing the CO₂RR and ORR, which is attributed to the electron redistribution. In this review, we start from the fundamental properties of NG, especially emphasizing the changes caused by N doping. Then the synthetic methods are summarized by classifying them into top-down strategies and bottom-up strategies. Subsequently, the applications of NG in the ORR and CO₂RR are discussed and the effects of electronic structure on the electrocatalytic activity are highlighted. Finally, we give our own perspective on the future research direction of NG in the applications of the ORR and CO₂RR.

Cellulose nanofibrils-graphene hybrids: recent advances in fabrication, properties, and applications

With the fast-developing social economy and the acceleration of industrialization, seeking effective renewable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly resources that show promising properties is an urgent task and a crucial means to achieve sustainable progress in the face of the growing depletion of non-renewable resources and the deterioration of environmental issues. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are natural polymeric nanomaterials with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, good mechanical features, high strength, low density, high specific surface area, and tunable chemistry. Their combination with other nanomaterials, such as graphene derivatives (GNMs), has been demonstrated to be effective since they produce hybrids with outstanding physicochemical properties, tailorable functionality, and high performance. In this review, recent advances in the preparation, modification, and emerging application of CNFs/GNMs hybrids are described and discussed using the latest studies. First, the concise background of nanocellulose and graphene derivatives is provided, followed by the interfacial interactions between CNFs and GNMs. The different hybrids exhibit great promise in separation, adsorption, optics, flexible electronics, energy storage, thermal management, barrier and packaging, and electromagnetic shielding. The main challenges that inhibit the applicability of these hybrids are finally highlighted, and some perspectives for future research directions are provided.

Graphene: A Path-Breaking Discovery for Energy Storage and Sustainability

The global energy situation requires the efficient use of resources and the development of new materials and processes for meeting current energy demand. Traditional materials have been explored to large extent for use in energy saving and storage devices. Graphene, being a path-breaking discovery of the present era, has become one of the most-researched materials due to its fascinating properties, such as high tensile strength, half-integer quantum Hall effect and excellent electrical/thermal conductivity. This paper presents an in-depth review on the exploration of deploying diverse derivatives and morphologies of graphene in various energy-saving and environmentally friendly applications. Use of graphene in lubricants has resulted in improvements to anti-wear characteristics and reduced frictional losses. This comprehensive survey facilitates the researchers in selecting the appropriate graphene derivative(s) and their compatibility with various materials to fabricate high-performance composites for usage in solar cells, fuel cells, supercapacitor applications, rechargeable batteries and automotive sectors.

Multimodal Imaging and Phototherapy of Cancer and Bacterial Infection by Graphene and Related Nanocomposites

The advancements in nanotechnology and nanomedicine are projected to solve many glitches in medicine, especially in the fields of cancer and infectious diseases, which are ranked in the top five most dangerous deadly diseases worldwide by the WHO. There is great concern to eradicate these problems with accurate diagnosis and therapies. Among many developed therapeutic models, near infra-red mediated phototherapy is a non-invasive technique used to invade many persistent tumors and bacterial infections with less inflammation compared with traditional therapeutic models such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgeries. Herein, we firstly summarize the up-to-date research on graphene phototheranostics for a better understanding of this field of research. We discuss the preparation and functionalization of graphene nanomaterials with various biocompatible components, such as metals, metal oxides, polymers, photosensitizers, and drugs, through covalent and noncovalent approaches. The multifunctional nanographene is used to diagnose the disease with confocal laser scanning microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging computed tomography, positron emission tomography, photoacoustic imaging, Raman, and ToF-SMIS to visualize inside the biological system for imaging-guided therapy are discussed. Further, treatment of disease by photothermal and photodynamic therapies against different cancers and bacterial infections are carefully conferred herein along with challenges and future perspectives.

Green syntheses of graphene and its applications in internet of things (IoT)-a status review

Internet of Things (IoT) is a trending technological field that converts any physical object into a communicable smarter one by converging the physical world with the digital world. This innovative technology connects the device to the internet and provides a platform to collect real-time data, cloud storage, and analyze the collected data to trigger smart actions from a remote location via remote notifications, etc. Because of its wide-ranging applications, this technology can be integrated into almost all the industries. Another trending field with tremendous opportunities is Nanotechnology, which provides many benefits in several areas of life, and helps to improve many technological and industrial sectors. So, integration of IoT and Nanotechnology can bring about the very important field of Internet of Nanothings (IoNT), which can re-shape the communication industry. For that, data (collected from trillions of nanosensors, connected to billions of devices) would be the 'ultimate truth', which could be generated from highly efficient nanosensors, fabricated from various novel nanomaterials, one of which is graphene, the so-called 'wonder material' of the 21st century. Therefore, graphene-assisted IoT/IoNT platforms may revolutionize the communication technologies around the globe. In this article, a status review of the smart applications of graphene in the IoT sector is presented. Firstly, various green synthesis of graphene for sustainable development is elucidated, followed by its applications in various nanosensors, detectors, actuators, memory, and nano-communication devices. Also, the future market prospects are discussed to converge various emerging concepts like machine learning, fog/edge computing, artificial intelligence, big data, and blockchain, with the graphene-assisted IoT field to bring about the concept of 'all-round connectivity in every sphere possible'.

Fabrication of Polymer/Graphene Biocomposites for Tissue Engineering

Graphene-based materials (GBM) are considered one of the 21st century's most promising materials, as they are incredibly light, strong, thin and have remarkable electrical and thermal properties. As a result, over the past decade, their combination with a diverse range of synthetic polymers has been explored in tissue engineering (TE) and regenerative medicine (RM). In addition, a wide range of methods for fabricating polymer/GBM scaffolds have been reported. This review provides an overview of the most recent advances in polymer/GBM composite development and fabrication, focusing on methods such as electrospinning and additive manufacturing (AM). As a future outlook, this work stresses the need for more in vivo studies to validate polymer/GBM composite scaffolds for TE applications, and gives insight on their fabrication by state-of-the-art processing technologies.

Graphene: Chemistry and Applications for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In the present era, different allotropes of carbon have been discovered, and graphene is the one among them that has contributed to many breakthroughs in research. It has been considered a promising candidate in the research and academic fields, as well as in industries, over the last decade. It has many properties to be explored, such as an enhanced specific surface area and beneficial thermal and electrical conductivities. Graphene is arranged as a 2D structure by organizing sp2 hybridized C with alternative single and double bonds, providing an extended conjugation combining hexagonal ring structures to form a honeycomb structure. The precious structure and outstanding characteristics are the major reason that modern industry relies heavily on graphene, and it is predominantly applied in electronic devices. Nowadays, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) foremostly utilize graphene as an anode or a cathode, and are combined with polymers to use them as polymer electrolytes. After three decades of commercialization of the lithium-ion battery, it still leads in consumer electronic society due to its higher energy density, wider operating voltages, low self-discharge, noble high-temperature performance, and fewer maintenance requirements. In this review, we aim to give a brief review of the domination of graphene and its applications in LIBs.

Graphene Growth Directly on SiO2/Si by Hot Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition

We report the first direct synthesis of graphene on SiO₂/Si by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. Graphene deposition was conducted at low pressures (35 Torr) with a mixture of methane/hydrogen and a substrate temperature of 970 °C followed by spontaneous cooling to room temperature. A thin copper-strip was deposited in the middle of the SiO₂/Si substrate as catalytic material. Raman spectroscopy mapping and atomic force microscopy measurements indicate the growth of few-layers of graphene over the entire SiO₂/Si substrate, far beyond the thin copper-strip, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed negligible amounts of copper next to the initially deposited strip. The scale of the graphene nanocrystal was estimated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

Graphene's Role in Emerging Trends of Capacitive Energy Storage

Technological breakthroughs in energy storage are being driven by the development of next-generation supercapacitors with favorable features besides high-power density and cycling stability. In this innovation, graphene and its derived materials play an active role. Here, the research status of graphene supercapacitors is analyzed. Recent progress is outlined in graphene assembly, exfoliation, and processing techniques. In addition, electrochemical and electrical attributes that are increasingly valued in next-generation supercapacitors are highlighted along with a summary of the latest research addressing chemical modification of graphene and its derivatives for future supercapacitors. The challenges and solutions discussed in the review hopefully will shed light on the commercialization of graphene and a broader genre of 2D materials in energy storage applications.

The Development of Graphene/Silica Hybrid Composites: A Review for Their Applications and Challenges

Graphene and silica are two materials that have wide uses and applications because of their unique properties. Graphene/silica hybrid composite, which is a combination of the two, has the good properties of a combination of graphene and silica while reducing the detrimental properties of both, so that it has promising future prospects in various fields. It is very important to design a synthesis method for graphene/silica composite hybrid materials to adapt to its practical application. In this review, the synthesis strategies of graphene, silica, and hybrid graphene/silica composites such as hydrothermal, sol-gel, hydrolysis, and encapsulation methods along with their results are studied. The application of this composite is also discussed, which includes applications such as adsorbents, energy storage, biomedical fields, and catalysts. Furthermore, future research challenges and futures need to be developed so that hybrid graphene/silica composites can be obtained with promising new application prospects.

Nanocellulose-Graphene Derivative Hybrids: Advanced Structure-Based Functionality from Top-down Synthesis to Bottom-up Assembly

There is an emerging endeavor of advanced structure-based functionality in the next-generation advanced functional materials inspired by hierarchical architecture for future technical applications. This review provides an impressive range roadmap for constructing advanced functional materials based on the nanocellulose-graphene derivative hybrids, from the top-down synthesis of their hierarchical materials to the bottom-up assembly of their nanoscale building blocks. First, the roadmap started from the top-down synthesis routes of nanocellulose-graphene hierarchical materials into their derivatives, where the pristine properties of nanoscale building blocks are still accessible and processable. Then, the stable-strong synergistic interfacial interactions between nanocellulose chains and graphene derivative nanosheets are uniquely well-suited in this roadmap for constructing scalable hybrid materials with interesting emergent properties. After that, the roadmap presented the bottom-up assembly approaches of these versatile nanoscale building blocks through self-assembly, templating, and mimicking of the bioinspired hierarchical structures toward advanced functional materials. Thereafter, toward understanding the specificity, superiority, and functionality of such hybrid materials, the roadmap discussed the properties and potential applications so far. Finally, the roadmap pointed out the key challenges and future outlooks, paving the way for comprehensive understanding and ideal designing of hybrid structures from nanocellulose and graphene derivatives.

Carbon-Based Materials for Oxidative Desulfurization and Denitrogenation of Fuels: A Review

Sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) are elements naturally found in petroleum-based fuels. S- and N-based compounds in liquid fuels are associated with a series of health and environmental issues. Thus, legislation has become stricter worldwide regarding their content and related emissions. Traditional treatment systems (namely hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation) fail to achieve the desired levels of S and N contents in fuels without compromising combustion parameters. Thus, oxidative treatments (oxidative desulfurization–ODS, and oxidative denitrogenation-ODN) are emerging as alternatives to producing ultra-low-sulfur and nitrogen fuels. This paper presents a thorough review of ODS and ODN processes applying carbon-based materials, either in hybrid forms or as catalysts on their own. Focus is brought to the role of the carbonaceous structure in oxidative treatments. Furthermore, a special section related to the use of amphiphilic carbon-based catalysts, which have some advantages related to a closer interaction with the oily and aqueous phases, is discussed.

Biogenic and Non-Biogenic Waste Utilization in the Synthesis of 2D Materials (Graphene, h-BN, g-C2N) and Their Applications

There is a significant amount of waste generated which creates a huge environmental issue for humanity/earth and a tremendous number of varieties of resources of a different kind are needed globally. In this context, nanoscience technology has shown its potential ability to solve the above issues and provides realistic applications and devices. The beauty of nanotechnology is its multidisciplinary approach, in which green nanotechnology has been translated to focus on waste materials. Waste materials are generally generated from biogenic (rice husk, dead leaves, waste food, etc.) and non-biogenic (several types of plastics waste, lard oil, etc.) materials produced from municipal or industrial waste. Currently, a large number of efforts have been made to utilize the waste materials for the synthesis of 2D materials in a greener way. This green synthetic approach has two advantages 1) it reduces the cost of synthesis and 2) includes minimal use of hazardous chemicals. Biogenic wastes (contains biomolecules) contain several significant constituents such as co-enzymes, enzymes, proteins, terpenoids, etc. These constituents or biomolecules are known to play an energetic role in the formation of a different variety of 2D materials and hence control the protocols of green synthesis of 2D materials. This review focuses on the exploration of the current understanding of 2D-layered material synthesis methods using waste material produce from biogenic and non-biogenic waste. It also investigates the applications of various 2D-layered materials in perspective with synthesis from waste and future challenges along with their limitations to industrial-scale synthesis.

Hydrodynamic cavitation for scalable exfoliation of few-layered graphene nanosheets

A scalable manufacturing method for the production of biocompatible fewlayered graphene nanosheets is developed using hydrodynamic cavitation. Scalable exfoliation is induced by employing hydrodynamic cavitation and a serum albumin protein. Unlike acoustic cavitation, the primary means of bubble collapse in hydrodynamic cavitation is caused laterally, thereby separating two adjacent flakes through a shear effect. In this process, bovine serum albumin, a known protein, was employed to act as an effective exfoliation agent and provide desired stability by preventing restacking of the graphene layers. This method was used to study the effect of time of graphene exfoliation in a novel hydrodynamic cavitation system. The fabricated products were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that with increasing the time of exfoliation, the number of graphene layers decreased based on theI_2D/I_Gratio but disorder increased based on theI_D/I_Gratio. At 3 h, theI_2D/I_Gratio was at 0.39 and theI_D/I_Gratio was 0.25, while at 6 h theI_2D/I_Gratio was 0.35 andI_D/I_Gratio was 0.29. The results of the theoretical and computational analysis this research outlines are needed to obtain an effective cavitation model that can be used to potentially improve graphene synthesis and quality. The captured images of bubble propagation in the solution imply that this fluidic phenomenon could assist the graphene exfoliation. To prove this, a simple cavitation model using a needle valve was designed. The needle valve cavitation setup was able to identify that cavitation assists in graphene exfoliation and this was proved using the graphene characterization data. Based on these findings, the simulation models were designed in ANSYS and COMSOL. Specifically, through the ANSYS simulation, we were able to calculate cavitation numbers for specific flow rates and fluid temperatures.

The effectiveness of Soxhlet extraction as a simple method for GO rinsing as a precursor of high-quality graphene

Graphite-oxide (GO) is a valuable compound produced by the chemical oxidation of graphite. The procedure for converting graphite into GO includes two steps: oxidation and subsequent rinsing. Proper rinsing is essential to obtain processable and applicable graphite-oxide. Traditionally, the rinsing involves filtration or centrifugation; both processes are extremely time-consuming, expensive, unsafe, and produce environmentally hazardous liquid waste in large volume. This study reveals an alternative method to rinse graphite-oxide using a Soxhlet extractor. Since only the vapor of the solvent is used for washing, Soxhlet rinsing offers reuse of the same solvent for many automatic subsequent cycles, leading to considerable solvent savings, reducing pollutants and work time, and ensuring safer production. The quality of the produced GO is evaluated by Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), elemental analysis, and electron microscopy. Moreover, we test the electrochemical performances of reduced GO (rGO), the main final product of graphite-oxide. Finally, we discuss the benefits involved in the suggested rinsing method and compare its profitability with traditional methods. Soxhlet rinsing is favored environmentally and economically. Particularly, the automatic operation of many washing sequences saves labor time, and the reuse of the washing solvent spares a large volume of chemically deleterious solvents.

Effects of doping on photocatalytic water splitting activities of PtS2/SnS2 van der Waals heterostructures

Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising technology to solve serious energy and environmental problems. The PtS₂ monolayer has been previously predicted to be a water splitting photocatalyst. But the high efficiency of carrier recombination in the monolayer results in poor photocatalytic performance. It is well known that the construction of van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions can improve the photocatalytic performance of a monolayer. In this investigation, we constructed a PtS₂/SnS₂ vdW heterojunction and systematically investigated the influence of the doping position and doping ratio on its performance using density functional theory calculations. Interestingly, the band alignment transforms from Type-II to Type-I and from Type-I to Type-II when the S in SnS₂ is replaced with Se in the PtS₂/SnS₂ vdW heterojunction and the S in PtS₂ is replaced with Se in the PtS₂/SnSe₂ vdW heterojunction, respectively. More importantly, from the PtS₂/SnS₂ to PtSe₂/SnSe₂ vdW heterojunction, the decomposition of water also changes from semi-decomposed water to fully decomposed water. Furthermore, the results show that the direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism exists in the PtSSe/SnSe₂ vdW heterojunction by analysis of the migration paths of photoinduced electrons and holes. And compared with the PtS₂/SnS₂, the PtSSe/SnSe₂ heterostructure exhibits better photocatalytic water splitting activities. These results can provide a direction that doping can improve the photocatalytic water splitting performance of heterojunction photocatalysts.

Graphene, Graphene-Derivatives and Composites: Fundamentals, Synthesis Approaches to Applications

Graphene has accomplished huge notoriety and interest from the universe of science considering its exceptional mechanical physical and thermal properties. Graphene is an allotrope of carbon having one atom thick size and planar sheets thickly stuffed in a lattice structure resembling a honeycomb structure. Numerous methods to prepare graphene have been created throughout a limited span of time. Due to its fascinating properties, it has found some extensive applications to a wide variety of fields. So, we believe there is a necessity to produce a document of the outstanding methods and some of the novel applications of graphene. This article centres around the strategies to orchestrate graphene and its applications in an attempt to sum up the advancements that has taken place in the research of graphene.

Effects of Graphene Nanoplatelets on Mechanical and Fire Performance of Flax Polypropylene Composites with Intumescent Flame Retardant

The integration of intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) additives in natural fiber-based polymer composites enhances the fire-retardant properties, but it generally has a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties, such as tensile and flexural strengths. In this work, the feasibility of graphene as a reinforcement additive and as an effective synergist for IFR-based flax-polypropylene (PP) composites was investigated. Noticeable improvements in tensile and flexural properties were achieved with the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) in the composites. Furthermore, better char-forming ability of GNP in combination with IFR was observed, suppressing HRR curves and thus, lowering the total heat release (THR). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) detected a reduction in the decomposition rate due to strong interfacial bonding between GNP and PP, whereas the maximum decomposition rate was observed to occur at a higher temperature. The saturation point for the IFR additive along with GNP has also been highlighted in this study. A safe and effective method of graphene encapsulation within PP using the fume-hood set-up was achieved. Finally, the effect of flame retardant on the flax–PP composite has been simulated using Fire Dynamics Simulator.

Graphene preparation and graphite exfoliation

The synthesis of Graphene is critical to achieving its functions in practical applications. Different methods have been used to synthesis graphene, but graphite exfoliation is considered the simplest way to produce graphene and graphene oxide. In general, controlling the synthesis conditions to achieving the optimum yield, keeping the pristine structure to realize on-demand properties, minimum layers with the smallest lateral size, and minimum oxygen content are the most obstacles experienced by researchers. Each application requires a specific graphene model, graphene oxides GO, or even graphene intercalated compounds (GIC) depending on synthesis conditions and approach. This paper reviewed and summarized the most researches in this field and focusing on exfoliation methods.
