Shape-Complementary Multicomponent Assembly of Low-Symmetry Co(III)Salphen-Based Coordination Cages

While metal-mediated self-assembly is a popular technique to construct discrete nanosized objects, highly symmetric structures, built from one type of ligand at a time, are dominating reported systems. The tailored integration of a set of different ligands requires sophisticated approaches to avoid narcissistic separation or formation of statistical mixtures. Here, we demonstrate how the combination of three structure-guiding effects (metal-templated macrocyclization, additional bridging ligands and shape-complementarity) based on Co(III)salphen metal nodes allows for a rational and high-yielding synthesis of structurally complex, lantern-shaped cages with up to four differentiable bridges. Three new heteroleptic coordination cages based on dinuclear Co(III)salphen macrocycles were synthesized in a one-pot reaction approach and fully characterized, including single crystal X-ray analyses. One cage groups two of the same ligands, another two different ligands around a symmetric Co2-bis-salphen ring. In the most complex structure, this ring is unsymmetric, rendering all four connections between the two metal centers distinguishable. While heteroleptic assembly around Pd(II) nodes has been shown to be dynamic, beneficial for cage-to-cage transformations, assembly cascades and adaptive systems, the herein introduced cages based on kinetically more inert Co(III)salphen will be advantageous for applications in enzyme-like catalysis and molecular machinery that require enhanced structural and chemical stability.

Assembly of Six Types of Heteroleptic Pd2L4 Cages under Kinetic Control

Heteroleptic assemblies composed of several kinds of building blocks have been seen in nature. It is still unclear how natural systems design and create such complicated assemblies selectively. Past efforts on multicomponent self-assembly of artificial metal-organic cages have mainly focused on finding a suitable combination of building blocks to lead to a single multicomponent self-assembly as the thermodynamically most stable product. Here, we present another approach to selectively produce multicomponent Pd(II)-based self-assemblies under kinetic control based on the selective ligand exchanges of weak Pd-L coordination bonds retaining the original orientation of the metal centers in a kinetically stabilized cyclic structure and on local reversibility given in certain areas of the energy landscape in the presence of the assist molecule that facilitates error correction of coordination bonds. The kinetic approach enabled us to build all six types of Pd2L4 cages and heteroleptic tetranuclear cages composed of three kinds of ditopic ligands. Although the cage complexes thus obtained are metastable, they are stable for 1 month or more at room temperature.

Programmed guest confinement via hierarchical cage to cage transformations

Taking inspiration from Nature, where (bio)molecular geometry variations are exploited to tune a large variety of functions, supramolecular chemistry has continuously developed novel systems in which, as a consequence of a specific stimulus, structural changes occur. Among the different architectures, supramolecular cages have been continuously investigated for their capability to act as functional hosts where guests can be released in a controlled fashion. In this paper, a novel methodology based on the use of phenanthrenequinone is applied to selectively change the binding properties of a tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine TPMA-based cage. In particular, subcomponent substitution has been used to change structural cage features thus controlling the inclusion ratio of competing guests differing in size or chirality.

Secondary Bracing Ligands Drive Heteroleptic Cuboctahedral PdII12 Cage Formation

The structural complexity of self-assembled metal-organic capsules can be increased by incorporating two or more different ligands into a single discrete product. Such complexity can be useful, by enabling larger, less-symmetrical, or more guests to be bound. Here we describe a rational design strategy for the use of subcomponent self-assembly to selectively prepare a heteroleptic cage with a large cavity volume (2631 ų) from simple, commercially available starting materials. Our strategy involves the initial isolation of a tris(iminopyridyl) Pd^II₃ complex 1, which reacts with tris(pyridyl)triazine ligand 2 to form a heteroleptic sandwich-like architecture 3. The tris(iminopyridyl) ligand within 3 serves as a "brace" to control the orientations of the labile coordination sites on the Pd^II centers. Self-assembly of 3 with additional 2 was thus directed to generate a large Pd^II₁₂ heteroleptic cuboctahedron host. This new cuboctahedron was observed to bind multiple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon guests simultaneously.

Macrocycle with Equatorial Coordination Sites Provides New Opportunity for Structure-Diverse Metallacages

Reported here is the synthesis of a macrocycle with equatorial coordination sites for the construction of self-assembled metallacages. The macrocycle is prepared via a post-modification on the equator of biphen[n]arene. Utilizing this macrocycle as a ligand, three prismatic cages and one octahedral cage were synthesized by regulating the geometric structures and coordination number of metal acceptors. The multi-cavity configuration of prismatic cage was revealed by single-crystal structure. We prove that a macrocycle with equatorial coordination sites can be an excellent building block for synthesizing structure-diverse metallacages. Our results provide a typical example and a general method for the design and synthesis of metallacages.

Controlled Construction of Heteroleptic [Pd2 (LA )2 (LB )(LC )]4+ Cages: A Facile Approach for Site-Selective endo-Functionalization of Supramolecular Cavities

Construction of supramolecular structures with internal functionalities is a promising approach to build enzyme-like cavities. The endo-functionalized [Pd₁₂ L₂₄ ] and [Pd₂ L₄ ] coordination cages represent the most successful systems in this regard. However, these systems mainly contain one type of endo-moiety. We herein provide a solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of [Pd₂ L₄ ] cages. Site-selective introduction of the endo-functional group was achieved through the formation of heteroleptic [Pd₂ (L^A )₂ (L^B )(L^C )] cages. Using two orthogonal steric control elements is the key for the selective formation of the hetero-assemblies. We demonstrated the construction of two hetero-cages with a single internal functional group as well as a hetero-cage with two distinct endohedral functionalities. The endo-functionalized hetero-cages bound sulfonate guests with fast-exchange dynamics. This strategy provides a new solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of supramolecular cavities.

Identifying porous cage subsets in the Cambridge Structural Database using topological data analysis

As rationally designable materials, the variety and number of synthesised metal-organic cages (MOCs) and organic cages (OCs) are expected to grow in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). In this regard, two of the most important questions are, which structures are already present in the CSD and how can they be identified? Here, we present a cage mining methodology based on topological data analysis and a combination of supervised and unsupervised learning that led to the derivation of - to the best of our knowledge - the first and only MOC dataset of 1839 structures and the largest experimental OC dataset of 7736 cages, as of March 2022. We illustrate the use of such datasets with a high-throughput screening of MOCs and OCs for xenon/krypton separation, important gases in multiple industries, including healthcare.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12(L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation also called subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy6(L)6 or Dy12(L)8 aggregates resulting from second-order template effects of the base and the lanthanide counterions used in these processes. XRD analysis revealed unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures in which the bis(hydrazone) ligand L adopts different conformations and shows remarkable differences in its mode of metal coordination. While a molecule of trimethylamine acts as a secondary template that fills the void of the Dy6(L)6 assembly, sodium ions take on this role for the formation of heterobimetallic Dy12(L)8 by occupying vacant coordination sites, thus demonstrating that these processes can be steered in different directions upon subtle changes of reaction conditions. Furthermore, Dy6(L)6 shows an interesting spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, which is amongst the largest values within multinuclear lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Shape Complementary Coordination Self-Assembly of a Redox-Active Heteroleptic Complex

We present here the coordination self-assembly of a new heteroleptic (bpyPd)₄L¹L₂² coordination complex (1) from one novel pyridinium-functionalized bis-2,4,6-tris(pyridin-3-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (bis-3-TPT, L¹) macrocyclic ligand, two separate 3-TPT (L²) ligands, and four cis-blocking bpyPd(NO₃)₂ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). While homoleptic self-assemblies with either L¹ or L² gave dynamic mixtures of products, a single thermodynamic heteroleptic complex was obtained driven by the shape complementarity of building blocks. Moreover, the redox-active nature of the heteroleptic assembly facilitates the highly efficient catalytic aerobic photo-oxidation of aromatic secondary alcohols under mild conditions.

An Adaptable Water-Soluble Molecular Boat for Selective Separation of Phenanthrene from Isomeric Anthracene

Anthracene crude oil is a common source of phenanthrene for its industrial use. The isolation of phenanthrene from this source is a challenging task due to very similar physical properties to its isomer anthracene. We report here a water-soluble Pd(II) molecular boat (MB1) with unusual structural topology that was obtained by assembling a flexible tetrapyridyl donor (L) with a cis-Pd(II) acceptor. The flexible backbone of the boat enabled it to breathe in the presence of a guest optimizing the fit within the cavity. The boat binds phenanthrene more strongly than anthracene, which enabled separation of phenanthrene with an >98% purity from an equimolar mixture of the two isomers using MB1 as an extracting agent. MB1 represents a unique example of a coordination receptor suitable for selective aqueous extraction of phenanthrene from anthracene with reusability of several cycles.

Structural properties of [Cu(II)3L6] cages: bridged polyatomic anion effects on unprecedented efficiency of heterogeneous catechol oxidation

Self-assembly of CuX₂ (X^- = BF₄^-, ClO₄^-, PF₆^-, and SbF₆^-) with a bidentate ethylmethylbis(3-pyridine)silane ligand (L) in the presence of additional polyatomic anions (X' = SiF₆^2- and PF₆^-) gives rise to single crystals consisting of the X'@[Cu(II)₃L₆] cage motif. These cages exist as discrete or anion-bridged 3D networks depending on outside anions. The anion-bridged 3D networks interpenetrate in a four-fold fashion, and show, to our best knowledge, the most effective heterogeneous catalysis in 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol oxidation reaction within 20 min at room temperature. Surprisingly, the heterogeneous catalysis is more effective than its corresponding homogeneous catalysis. Such notable catalytic effects can be explained by the maintenance of 3D inter-cage Cu⋯Cu distance as a catalytic center.

Perylene Bisimide-Cored Supramolecular Coordination Complexes: Interplay between Ensembles, Excited State Processes, and Aggregation Behaviors

Manipulating the optical properties of fluorescent species is challenging owing to complicated and tedious synthetic works. Herein, the photophysical properties of perylene bisimide (PBI) were effectively tuned by varying the geometrical arrangement of PBI moieties within supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), where a PBI-based dicycle (2) and a trigonal prism (3) were generated via using a typical 90° Pt(II) reagent, cis-(PEt₃ )₂ Pt(OTf)₂ -based coordination-driven self-assembly approach. The ligand, an ortho-tetrapyridiyl-PBI (1), exhibits a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (∼13 %) and efficient inter-system crossing (ISC). 2, however, is much more emissive with a fluorescence quantum yield of ∼41 %, and the relevant ISC process is significantly hindered. The fluorescence quantum yield of 3 is merely ∼6 % due to the observed symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS), which turns to triplet state upon charge recombination. Interestingly, 3 could be fully transformed into 2 by simply adding a suitable amount of a 90° Pt(II)-based neutral triangle. Moreover, 2 tends to form discrete dimers both in crystal and solution states, but 3 does not show the property. Therefore, controlling geometrical arrangement of fluorophores through coordination-driven self-assembly could be taken as another effective way to tune their excited state relaxation pathways and construct high-performance optical molecular materials, which generally have to be prepared via organic synthesis.

Pathway-Dependent Coordination Networks: Crystals versus Films

We demonstrate the formation of both metallo-organic crystals and nanoscale films that have entirely different compositions and structures despite using the same set of starting materials. This difference is the result of an unexpected cation exchange process. The reaction of an iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by diffusion of one solution into another resulted in iron-to-copper exchange, concurrent ligand rearrangement, and the formation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). This observation shows that polypyridyl complexes can be used as expendable precursors for the growth of MOFs. In contrast, alternative depositions of the iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by automated spin coating on conductive metal oxides resulted in the formation of electrochromic coatings, and the structure and redox properties of the iron complex were retained. The possibility to form such different networks from the same set of molecular building blocks by “in solution” versus “on surface” coordination chemistry broadens the synthetic space to design functional materials.

A Family of Heterobimetallic Cubes Shows Spin-Crossover Behaviour Near Room Temperature

Using 4-(4'-pyridyl)aniline as a simple organic building block in combination with three different aldehyde components together with metal(II) salts gave three different Fe8 Pt6 -cubes and their corresponding Zn8 Pt6 analogues by employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach. Whereas the use of zinc(II) salts gave rise to diamagnetic cages, iron(II) salts yielded metallosupramolecular cages that show spin-crossover behaviour in solution. The spin-transition temperature T1/2 depends on the incorporated aldehyde component, giving a construction kit for the deliberate synthesis of spin-crossover compounds with tailored transition properties. Incorporation of 4-thiazolecarbaldehyde or N-methyl-2-imidazole-carbaldehyde yielded cages that undergo spin-crossover around room temperature whereas the cage obtained using 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde shows a spin-transition at low temperatures. Three new structures were characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and all structures were characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

An "All-in-One" Synthetic Strategy for Linear Metalla[4]Catenanes

One fascinating and challenging synthetic target in the field of mechanically interlocked molecules is the family of linear [4]catenanes, which are topologically identical to the logo of automobile maker Audi. Herein, we report an "all-in-one" synthetic strategy for the synthesis of linear metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) by the coordination-driven self-assembly of Cp*Rh-based (Cp* = η⁵-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) organometallic rectangle π-donors and tetracationic organic cyclophane π-acceptors. We selected the pyrenyl group as the π-donor unit, leading to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and cyclic metalla[3]catenanes via π-stacking interactions. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between π-donor units and π-acceptor units, a heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and linear metalla[3]catenanes, respectively, could be obtained by the simple stirring of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with a suitable tetracationic cyclophane. On this basis, this "all-in-one" synthetic strategy was further used to realize a quantitative one-step synthesis of a linear metalla[4]catenanes via the self-assembly of cyclic metalla[3]catenanes and tetracationic cyclophanes. All heterogeneous metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2-4) were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis, NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Tuning the Size and Geometry of Heteroleptic Coordination Cages by Varying the Ligand Bent Angle

Spherical assemblies of the type [Pd_n L_2n ]²ⁿ⁺ can be obtained from Pd^II salts and curved N-donor ligands, L. It is well established that the bent angle, α, of the ligand is a decisive factor in the self-assembly process, with larger angles leading to complexes with a higher nuclearity, n. Herein, we report heteroleptic coordination cages of the type [Pd_n L_n L'_n ]²ⁿ⁺ , for which a similar correlation between the ligand bent angle and the nuclearity is observed. Tetranuclear cages were obtained by combining [Pd(CH₃ CN)₄ ](BF₄ )₂ with 1,3-di(pyridin-3-yl)benzene and ligands featuring a bent angle of α=120°. The use of a dipyridyl ligand with α=149° led to the formation of a hexanuclear complex with a trigonal prismatic geometry; for linear ligands, octanuclear assemblies of the type [Pd₈ L₈ L'₈ ]¹⁶⁺ were obtained. The predictable formation of heteroleptic Pd^II cages from 1,3-di(pyridin-3-yl)benzene and different dipyridyl ligands is evidence that there are entire classes of heteroleptic cage structures that are privileged from a thermodynamic point of view.

Increasing structural and functional complexity in self-assembled coordination cages

Progress in metallo-supramolecular chemistry creates potential to synthesize functional nano systems and intelligent materials of increasing complexity. In the past four decades, metal-mediated self-assembly has produced a wide range of structural motifs such as helicates, grids, links, knots, spheres and cages, with particularly the latter ones catching growing attention, owing to their nano-scale cavities. Assemblies serving as hosts allow application as selective receptors, confined reaction environments and more. Recently, the field has made big steps forward by implementing dedicated functionality, e.g. catalytic centres or photoswitches to allow stimuli control. Besides incorporation in homoleptic systems, composed of one type of ligand, desire arose to include more than one function within the same assembly. Inspiration comes from natural enzymes that congregate, for example, a substrate recognition site, an allosteric regulator element and a reaction centre. Combining several functionalities without creating statistical mixtures, however, requires a toolbox of sophisticated assembly strategies. This review showcases the implementation of function into self-assembled cages and devises strategies to selectively form heteroleptic structures. We discuss first examples resulting from a combination of both principles, namely multicomponent multifunctional host-guest complexes, and their potential in application in areas such as sensing, catalysis, and photo-redox systems.

Integrative Assembly of Heteroleptic Tetrahedra Controlled by Backbone Steric Bulk

A bent fluorenone-based dipyridyl ligand LA reacts with PdII cations to a solvent-dependent dynamic library of [PdnL2n] assemblies, constituted by a [Pd3LA6] ring and a [Pd4LA8] tetrahedron as major components, and a [Pd6LA12] octahedron as minor component. Introduction of backbone steric hindrance in ligand LB allows exclusive formation of the [Pd6LB12] octahedron. Combining equimolar amounts of both ligands results in integrative self-sorting to give an unprecedented [Pd4LA4LB4] heteroleptic tetrahedron. Key to the non-statistical assembly outcome is exploiting the structural peculiarity of the [Pd4L8] tetrahedral topology, where the four lean ligands occupy two doubly bridged edges and the bulky ligands span the four remaining, singly bridged edges. Hence, the system finds a compromise between the entropic drive to form an assembly smaller than the octahedron and the enthalpic prohibition of pairing two bulky ligands on the same edge of the triangular ring. The emission of luminescent LA is maintained in both homoleptic [Pd3LA6] and heteroleptic [Pd4LA4LB4].

Multi-stimuli Control over Assembly and Guest Binding in Metallo-supramolecular Hosts Based on Dithienylethene Photoswitches

It is difficult to assemble multi-component metallo-supramolecular architectures in a non-statistical fashion, which limits their development toward functional materials. Herein, we report a system of interconverting bowls and cages that are able to respond to various selective stimuli (light, ligands, anions), based on the self-assembly of a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) ligand, L^a, with Pd^II cations. By combining the concept of “coordination sphere engineering”, relying on bulky quinoline donors, with reversible photoswitching between the ligand’s open (o-L^a) and closed (c-L^a) forms, a [Pd₂(o-L^a)₄] cage (o-C) and a [Pd₂(c-L^a)₃] bowl (c-B) were obtained, respectively. This structural rearrangement modulates the system’s guest uptake capabilities. Among three bis-sulfonate guests (G1, G2, and G3), the cage can encapsulate only the smallest (G1), while the bowl binds all of them. Bowl c-B was further used to synthesize a series of heteroleptic cages, [Pd₂L^A₃L^B], representing a motif never reported before. Additional ligands (L^c-f), with short or long arms, tune the cavity size, thus enabling or preventing guest uptake. Addition of Br^–/Ag⁺ makes it possible to change the overall charge, again triggering guest uptake and release, as well as fourth ligand de-/recomplexation. In combination, site-selective introduction of functionality and application of external stimuli lead to an intricate system of hosts with different guest preferences. A high degree of complexity is achieved through cooperativity between only a few components.

Identification of a Heteroleptic Pd6L6L'6 Coordination Cage by Screening of a Virtual Combinatorial Library

The design of structurally defined heteroleptic coordination cages is a challenging task, and only few examples are known to date. Here we describe a selection approach that allowed the identification of a novel hexanuclear Pd cage containing two types of dipyridyl ligands. A virtual combinatorial library of [Pd_nL_2n](BF₄)_2n complexes was prepared by mixing six different dipyridyl ligands with substoichiometric amounts of [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂. Analysis of the equilibrated reaction mixture revealed the preferential formation of a heteroleptic [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ assembly. The complex was prepared on a preparative scale by a targeted synthesis, and its structure was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It features an unprecedented trigonal-antiprismatic cage structure with two triangular Pd₃L₃ macrocycles bridged by six L' ligands. A related but significantly larger [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ cage was obtained by using metalloligands instead of organic dipyridyl ligands.

Backbone-Bridging Promotes Diversity in Heteroleptic Cages

The combination of shape-complementary bis-monodentate ligands L^A and L^B with Pd^II cations yields heteroleptic cages cis-[Pd₂ L^A ₂ L^B ₂ ] by self-sorting. Herein, we report how such assemblies can be diversified by introduction of covalent backbone bridges between two L^A units. Together with solvent and guest effects, the flexibility of these linkers can modulate nuclearity, topology, and number of cavities in a family of four structurally diverse assemblies. Ligand L^A1 , with flexible linker, reacts in CH₃ CN with its L^B counterpart to a tetranuclear dimer D1. In DMSO, however, a trinuclear pseudo-tetrahedron T1 is formed. The product of L^A2 , with rigid linker, looks similar to D1, but with a rotated ligand arrangement. In presence of an anionic guest, this dimer D2 transforms and a hexanuclear prismatic barrel P2 crystallizes. We demonstrate how controlling a ligand's coordination mode can trigger structural differentiation and increase complexity in metallo-supramolecular assembly.

A hierarchical assembly strategy for near-infrared photothermal conversion: unconventional heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes

Herein, we report a hierarchical assembly strategy for constructing heterogeneous half-sandwich organometallic D-A (D = π-donor, A = π-acceptor) interlocked structures, and their application in near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion. Thienothiophene and diketopyrrolopyrrole groups were selected as the D and A units, leading to two homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with D-D-D-D and A-A-A-A stacks, respectively. By the ordered secondary assembly of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes, two unprecedented heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes comprising an unusual mixed D-A-D-D and unconventional D-A-A-A stacks were realized by the combination of multiple noncovalent interactions, as all demonstrated by a detailed X-ray crystallographic study. Benefiting from the mixed D-A stacking modes, NIR absorption of heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes is significantly enhanced in contrast to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes. Thanks to the enhanced NIR absorption and the fluorescence quenching effect from half-sandwich organometallic fragments, heterogeneous D-A metalla[2]catenanes displayed high-performance NIR photothermal conversion properties (η = 27.3%).

Self-assembly of metalla[3]catenanes, Borromean rings and ring-in-ring complexes using a simple π-donor unit

Despite extensive research and several stunning breakthroughs in the synthesis of interlocked molecular species, [3]catenanes, Borromean rings and ring-in-ring complexes are exceedingly rare and their targeted synthesis remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of Cp^*Rh-based homogeneous and heterogeneous interlocked structures have been prepared by coordination-driven self-assembly, not only including metalla[2]catenanes and molecular Borromean rings, but also linear metalla[3]catenanes and ring-in-ring complexes. The interlocked structures are all based on bithiophenyl groups. The bithiophenyl groups effectively enhance the strength of the inter-ring interactions and play a crucial role in the formation of these interlocked structures. By taking advantage of the strong interaction between π-donor (D) and π-acceptor (A) groups, the electron-deficient methylviologen cation was introduced into a cationic metallarectangle based on bithiophenyl groups. Taking inspiration from these results, a cationic metallarectangle based on A units was threaded into a metallarectangle based on D units, leading to a heterogeneous D–A ring-in-ring structure.

Designing a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle for imaging-guided photodynamic cancer theranostics

Coordination-driven self-assembly features good predictability and directionality in the construction of discrete metallacycles and metallacages with well-defined sizes and shapes, but their medicinal application has been limited by their low stability and solubility. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a highly stable coordination-driven metallacycle with desired functionality derived from a perylene-diimide ligand via a spontaneous deprotonation self-assembly process. Brilliant chemical stability and singlet oxygen production ability of this emissive octanuclear organopalladium macrocycle make it a good candidate toward biological studies. After cellular uptake by endocytosis, the metallacycle exhibits potent fluorescence cell imaging properties and cancer photodynamic therapeutic ability through enhancing ROS production, with high biocompatibility and safety. This study not only provides a rational design strategy for highly stable luminescent organopalladium metallacycles, but also sheds light on their application in imaging-guided photodynamic cancer therapy.

Dynamic Complex-to-Complex Transformations of Heterobimetallic Systems Influence the Cage Structure or Spin State of Iron(II) Ions

Two new heterobimetallic cages, a trigonal‐bipyramidal and a cubic one, were assembled from the same mononuclear metalloligand by adopting the molecular library approach, using iron(II) and palladium(II) building blocks. The ligand system was designed to readily assemble through subcomponent self‐assembly. It allowed the introduction of steric strain at the iron(II) centres, which stabilizes its paramagnetic high‐spin state. This steric strain was utilized to drive dynamic complex‐to‐complex transformations with both the metalloligand and heterobimetallic cages. Addition of sterically less crowded subcomponents as a chemical stimulus transformed all complexes to their previously reported low‐spin analogues. The metalloligand and bipyramid incorporated the new building block more readily than the cubic cage, probably because the geometric structure of the sterically crowded metalloligand favours the cube formation. Furthermore it was possible to provoke structural transformations upon addition of more favourable chelating ligands, converting the cubic structures into bipyramidal ones.

Precise Self-Assembly of Molecular Four- and Six-Pointed Stars

A novel metal-organic ligand (MOL 2) has been prepared by linking two V-shaped bis-terpyridines with one X-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine through the stable <tpy-Ru²⁺-tpy> connectivity. The complexation between MOL 2, X-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine, and Zn²⁺ gave rise to a supramolecular C₆-symmetrical six-pointed star quantitatively. In addition, a mixture of MOL 2, K-shaped tetrakis-terpyridine, and Zn²⁺ afforded a C₂-symmetrical four-pointed star. These metallo-supramolecular architectures were adequately characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, TWIM-MS, and TEM analyses.

Chiral Self-Sorting in Truxene-Based Metallacages

Two chiral face-rotating metalla-assembled polyhedra were constructed upon self-assembling achiral components, i.e., a tritopic ligand based on a truxene core (10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1′,2′-c]fluorene) and two different hydroxyquinonato–bridged diruthenium complexes. Both polyhedra were characterized in solution as well as in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. In both cases, the self-sorting process leading to only two homo-chiral enantiomers was governed by non-covalent interactions between both truxene units that faced each other.

Tunable Fullerene Affinity of Cages, Bowls and Rings Assembled by PdII Coordination Sphere Engineering

For metal-mediated host compounds, the development of strategies to reduce symmetry and introduce multiple functionalities in a non-statistical way is a challenging task. We show that the introduction of steric stress around the coordination environment of square-planar PdII cations and bis-monodentate nitrogen donor ligands allows to control the size and shape of the assembled product, from [Pd2 L4 ] cages over [Pd2 L3 ] bowl-shaped structures to [Pd2 L2 ] rings. Therefore, banana-shaped ligand backbones were equipped with pyridines, two different quinoline isomers and acridine, the latter three introducing steric congestion through hydrogen substituents on annelated benzene rings. Differing behavior of the four resulting hosts towards the binding of C60 and C70 fullerenes was studied and related to structural differences by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The three cages based on pyridine, 6-quinoline or 3-quinoline donors were found to either bind C60 , C70 or no fullerene at all.

One-Pot Self-Assembly of Stellated Metallosupramolecules from Multivalent and Complementary Terpyridine-Based Ligands

A series of stellated metallosupramolecular architectures have been assembled through three-component integrative self-sorting. Building on the complementary ligand pairing, the initial attempts to synthesize the hexagram complex from a combination of X-shaped tetrakis- and V-shaped bis-terpyridine ligands, and Cd^II ions, resulted in an unprecedented mixture of stellated octanuclear and dodecanuclear metallocages, which were further isolated by column chromatography. To overcome the unexpected obstacle, the multivalent ligand design along with spontaneous heteroleptic complexation was applied to realization of the one-pot synthesis of the intricate topology. A centrally situated triangle served as a prop for quantitative formation of the six-pointed stellated complex. Notably, in the absence of the triangular prop, a four-pointed star was produced.

Supramolecular Arene-Ruthenium Metallacycle with Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Properties

Functionalization of 1,4-di(4-pyridinyl)benzene with poly(arylester) dendrimers bearing cyanobiphenyl end-groups gives a bidentate dendromesogenic ligand (L) that exhibits thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. Combination of the diruthenium complex [Ru₂(p-cymene)₂(donq)][DDS]₂ (M) with L, by coordination-driven self-assembly, affords the discrete and well-defined metallacycle M₂L₂. Like L, this supramolecular dendritic system displays mesomorphic properties above 50 °C. Both compounds L and M₂L₂ show smectic phases, characterized by a multilayered organization of the multiple components.

Palladium(II)-Based Self-Assembled Heteroleptic Coordination Architectures: A Growing Family

Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as L^a and L^b ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal; 2) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is different; and 3) [Pd_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.
