Effective photodegradation of antibiotics by guest-host synergy between photosensitizer and bismuth vanadate: Underlying mechanism and toxicity assessment

The removal of antibiotics in wastewater has attracted increasing attention. Herein, a superior photosensitized photocatalytic system was developed with acetophenone (ACP) as the guest photosensitizer, bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) as the host catalyst and poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) as the bridging complex, and used for the removal of sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in water under simulated visible light (λ > 420 nm). The obtained ACP-PDDA-BiVO₄ nanoplates attained a removal efficiency of 88.9%-98.2% for SMR, SDZ and SMZ after 60 min reaction and achieved kinetic rate constant approximately 10, 4.7 and 13 times of BiVO₄, PDDA-BiVO₄ and ACP-BiVO₄, respectively, for SMZ degradation. In the guest-host photocatalytic system, ACP photosensitizer was found to have a great superiority in enhancing the light absorption, promoting the surface charge separation-transfer and efficient generation of holes (h⁺) and superoxide radical (·O₂^-), greatly contributing to the photoactivity. The SMZ degradation pathways were proposed based on the identified degradation intermediates, involving three main pathways of rearrangement, desulfonation and oxidation. The toxicity of intermediates was evaluated and the results demonstrated that the overall toxicity was reduced compared with parent SMZ. This catalyst maintained 92% photocatalytic oxidation performance after five cyclic experiments and displayed a co-photodegradation ability to others antibiotics (e.g., roxithromycin, ciprofloxacin et al.) in effluent water. Therefore, this work provides a facile photosensitized strategy for developing guest-host photocatalysts, which enabling the simultaneous antibiotics removal and effectively reduce the ecological risks in wastewater.

Construction of TiO2(B)/Anatase Heterophase Junctions via a Water-Induced Phase Transformation Strategy for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

The development of facile and green solution-phase routes toward the fabrication of TiO₂-based heterophase junctions with a delicate control of phase and structure is a challenging task. Herein, we report a simple and convenient method to controllably fabricate TiO₂(B)/anatase heterophase junctions, which was successfully realized by utilizing the ideal great solvent of water to treat the presynthesized TiO₂(B) nanosheet precursor at a low temperature of 80 °C. On the basis of phase structure transformation and morphology evolution data, the formation of these TiO₂(B)/anatase heterophase junctions was reasonably explained by a novel water-induced TiO₂(B) → anatase phase transformation mechanism. Benefiting from the desirable structural and photoelectronic advantages of more exposed active sites, enhanced light absorbance, and promoted separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the thus-transformed TiO₂(B)/anatase heterophase junctions exhibit fascinating photocatalytic performance in water splitting. Specifically, with the help of Pt as a cocatalyst and methanol as a sacrificial agent, the H₂ production rate of optimized TiO₂(B)/anatase heterophase junction reaches 6.92 mmol·g^-1·h^-1, which is almost 7.1 and 2.1 times higher than those of the pristine TiO₂(B) nanosheets and the final anatase nanocrystals. More interestingly, the TiO₂(B)/anatase heterophase junction also delivers prominent activity toward pure water splitting to simultaneously produce H₂ and H₂O₂, with evolution rates of up to 1.10 and 0.55 mmol·g^-1·h^-1, respectively. Our work may advance the facile green solvent-mediated synthesis of metal oxide-based heterophase junctions for applications in energy- and environmental-related areas.

Synthesis, characterization and advanced sustainable applications of titanium dioxide nanoparticles: A review

Nanotechnology is capturing great interest worldwide due to their stirring applications in various fields. Among nanoparticles (NPs), titanium dioxide (TiO₂) NPs have been widely used in daily life and can be synthesized through various physical, chemical, and green methods. Green synthesis is a non-toxic, cost-effective, and eco-friendly route for the synthesis of NPs. Plenty of work has been reported on the green, chemical, physical and biological synthesis of TiO₂ NPs and these NPs can be characterized through high tech. instruments. In the present review, dense data have been presented on the comparative synthesis of TiO₂ NPs with different characteristics and their wide range of applications. Among the TiO₂ NPs synthesis techniques, the green methods have been proven to be efficient than chemical synthesis methods because of the less use of precursors, time-effectiveness, and energy-efficiency during the green synthesis procedures. Moreover, this review describes the types of plants (shrubs, herbs and trees), microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and algae), biological derivatives (proteins, peptides, and starches) employed for the synthesis of TiO₂ NPs. The TiO₂ NPs can be effectively used for the treatment of polluted water and positively affected the plant physiology especially under abiotic stresses but the response varied with types, size, shapes, doses, duration of exposure, metal species along with other factors. This review also highlights the regulating features and future standpoints for the measurable enrichment in TiO₂ NPs product and perspectives of TiO₂ NPs reliable application.

On the Mechanism of Bioinspired Formation of Inorganic Oxides: Structural Evidence of the Electrostatic Nature of the Interaction between a Mononuclear Inorganic Precursor and Lysozyme

Nature has evolved several molecular machineries to promote the formation at physiological conditions of inorganic materials, which would otherwise be formed in extreme conditions. The molecular determinants of this process have been established over the last decade, identifying a strong role of electrostatics in the first steps of the precipitation. However, no conclusive, structure-based evidence has been provided so far. In this manuscript, we test the binding of lysozyme with silica and titania potential precursors. In contrast with the absence of structural information about the interaction with the silica precursor, we observe the interaction with a mononuclear titanium(IV) species, which is found to occur in a region rich of positive charges.

Structure-tunable supraparticle assemblies of hollow cupric oxide sheathed with nanographenes

Self-assembled supraparticles (SPs), a secondary structure of clustered nanoparticles, have attracted considerable interest owing to their highly tunable structure, composition, and morphology from their primary nanoparticle constituents. In this study, hierarchically assembled hollow Cu2O SPs were prepared using a cationic polyelectrolyte poly(diallyl dimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) during the formation of Cu2O nanoparticles. The concentration-dependent structural transformation of PDDA from linear chains to assembled droplets plays a crucial role in forming a hollow colloidal template, affording the self-assembly of Cu2O nanoparticles as a secondary surfactant. The use of the positively charged PDDA also affords negatively charged nanoscale graphene oxide (NGO), an electrical and mechanical supporter to uniformly coat the surface of the hollow Cu2O SPs. Subsequent thermal treatment to enhance the electrical conductivity of NGO within the NGO/Cu2O SPs allows for the concomitant phase transformation of Cu2O to CuO, affording reduced NGO/CuO (RNGO/CuO) SPs. The uniquely structured hollow RNGO/CuO SPs achieve improved electrochemical properties by providing enhanced electrical conductivity and electroactive surface area.

TiBALDH as a precursor for biomimetic TiO2 synthesis: stability aspects in aqueous media

Titanium(iv) bis(ammonium lactate)dihydroxide (TiBALDH) is a commercially available reagent frequently used to synthesize TiO₂. Particularly, for the biomimetic synthesis of TiO₂, TiBALDH is the preferred precursor because it can be mixed in aqueous solutions with no apparent hydrolysis or condensation reactions. Thus, proteins or other biomolecules can be used as a template in aqueous systems for the synthesis of TiO₂ from TiBALDH. Nevertheless, there is evidence that TiBALDH is in equilibrium with TiO₂, and even, the principal structure of the complex has been suggested as [Ti₄O₄(lactate)₈]⁸⁻. Since that chemical equilibrium depends on the polarity of the solvent, in this work we explored a diversity of media to test the chemical stability of TiBALDH and its equilibrium with TiO₂ at room temperature. TiBALDH (2.078 M) contains particles of 18.6 ± 7.3 nm in size, if it is diluted with deionized water, the particles reach a size of 5.2 ± 1.7 nm, which suggest that intermolecular interactions form polymers of titanium lactate complexes reversibly, reaching equilibrium after 10 hours. Typical buffer systems were tested; TiBALDH reacted rapidly only with phosphate groups, even if the source came from DNA. Therefore, phosphate buffer must be avoided in biomineralization TiO₂ synthesis. In solutions of TiBALDH at basic pH, condensation reactions are promoted to form a gel containing anatase nanoparticles, but if the solutions are acidic, monodisperse anatase nanoparticles of ∼5 nm were observed. The results show that the commercial reagent TiBALDH contains many species of titanium lactate complexes in equilibrium with TiO₂, and it is affected by the concentration, time, pH, and several ions. This peculiar behavior must be taken into account when this precursor is used and it could be useful to develop novel synthesis routes of macrostructures with biomolecules in aqueous systems.

Factors affecting TiO₂ biomineralization using TiBALDH as precursor.

Interactions between Metal Oxides and Biomolecules: from Fundamental Understanding to Applications

Metallo-oxide (MO)-based bioinorganic nanocomposites promise unique structures, physicochemical properties, and novel biochemical functionalities, and within the past decade, investment in research on materials such as ZnO, TiO₂, SiO₂, and GeO₂ has significantly increased. Besides traditional approaches, the synthesis, shaping, structural patterning, and postprocessing chemical functionalization of the materials surface is inspired by strategies which mimic processes in nature. Would such materials deliver new technologies? Answering this question requires the merging of historical knowledge and current research from different fields of science. Practically, we need an effective defragmentation of the research area. From our perspective, the superficial accounting of material properties, chemistry of the surfaces, and the behavior of biomolecules next to such surfaces is a problem. This is particularly of concern when we wish to bridge between technologies in vitro and biotechnologies in vivo. Further, besides the potential practical technological efficiency and advantages such materials might exhibit, we have to consider the wider long-term implications of material stability and toxicity. In this contribution, we present a critical review of recent advances in the chemistry and engineering of MO-based biocomposites, highlighting the role of interactions at the interface and the techniques by which these can be studied. At the end of the article, we outline the challenges which hamper progress in research and extrapolate to developing and promising directions including additive manufacturing and synthetic biology that could benefit from molecular level understanding of interactions occurring between inanimate (abiotic) and living (biotic) materials.

Surface modified TiO2 floating photocatalyst with PDDA for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa

Microcystis aeruginosa, as the most common cyanobacteria, often grows uncontrollably in eutrophic lakes with the accumulation of microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in water, which heavily pollutes water and hence imposes tremendous threat to aquatic animals and human beings. To remediate the harmful algae polluted water, here we synthesize a series of poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) modified TiO₂ floating photocatalysts, PDDA@NPT-EGC, and apply them as a visible light driven multifunctional material. The fabricated PDDA@NPT-EGC composites have a worm-like structure with PDDA particles distributed on their surfaces, and the concentration of PDDA can affect the agglomerative condition and distribution of PDDA particles and the photoelectric properties of catalysts. Among these catalysts, the PDDA@NPT-EGC with 0.2 wt% PDDA (0.2PDDA@NPT-EGC) shows the highest adsorption and photocatalytic activity. Compared with the NPT-EGC, the dark adsorption efficiency for the 0.2PDDA@NPT-EGC after 3 h increases from 70.4% to 88.9%, and the total removal efficiency after visible light irradiation for 2 h increases from 77.8% to 92.6%. In addition, the 0.2PDDA@NPT-EGC exhibits a removal efficiency of 96.55% for photocatalytic degradation of MC-LR after irradiation for 3 h. The Adda side chain of MC-LR molecule is found to degradate gradually in the photocatalytic degradation process, indicative of the elimination of biotoxicity for MC-LR molecule in the reaction. We demonstrate that the 0.2PDDA@NPT-EGC is remarkably competitive in both algae inactivation and MC-LR removal, which shall hold substantial promise in remediation of algae pollution in eutrophic waters.

A Biomineralization Strategy for "Net"-Like Interconnected TiO2 Nanoparticles Conformably Covering Reduced Graphene Oxide with Reversible Interfacial Lithium Storage

A green and simple biomineralization-inspired method to create "net"-like interconnected TiO₂ nanoparticles conformably covering reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with high loading density is reported. This method uses polyamine as both the biomineralization agent and linker to manipulate the nucleation, growth, and crystallization of TiO₂ nanoparticles on the surface of graphene oxide. The obtained TiO₂/RGO composites demonstrate sub-10-nm TiO₂ nanoparticles with (001) facets, ultrathin thickness (10-12 nm), and a high surface area of 172 m² g^-1. When used as anode material for lithium ion batteries, the material displayed excellent rate capability and long cycle life; a capacity of 155 mAh g^-1 is obtained after 50 cycles at the rate of 5C (1C = 168 mA g^-1) and a specific capacity of 115 mAh g^-1 is retained after 2000 cycles at the rate of 25C, which is much higher than that of mechanically mixed TiO₂/graphene composites. Detailed discharge curve analysis reveals that the high rate and cycle performance are partly a result of the reversible interfacial lithium storage of materials, which might be attributed to the pores in the TiO₂ nets on the RGO and may provide a sufficient number of interfaces for accepting both electrons and lithium ions.

Facile fabrication of a mpg-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst with enhanced visible light photoactivity toward organic pollutant degradation

A facile hard template approach has been developed to prepare mpg-C₃N₄/TiO₂ composites using SiO₂ nanoparticles as a hard template and cyanamide as a precursor.
