Abstract
The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol, 4-methoxybenzoylhydrazine and Co(OAc)2·4H2O in 1 : 2 : 2 mole ratio in methanol under aerobic conditions produced in 61% yield a tetranuclear complex having the molecular formula [CoIICoIII(μ-OAc)(μ3-OH)(μ-L)]2 where OAc- and L3- represent acetate and N',N''-(5-methyl-2-oxido-1,3-phenylene)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(4-methoxybenzoylhydrazonate), respectively. The elemental analysis and the mass spectrometric data confirmed the molecular formula of the complex. It is electrically non-conducting and paramagnetic. The complex crystallized as acetonitrile solvate. The X-ray structure shows that each Co(II) centre has a distorted square-pyramidal NO4 coordination sphere, while each Co(III) centre is in a distorted octahedral NO5 environment. The four metal atoms and the four bridging O-atoms form an open cubane type Co4O4 motif. In the crystal lattice, self-assembly of the solvated complex via intermolecular O-H⋯O interaction leads to a two-dimensional network structure. The infrared and electronic spectroscopic features of the complex are consistent with its molecular structure. Cryomagnetic measurements together with theoretical calculations suggest the presence of easy-axis anisotropy for the square-pyramidal Co(II) centres. The complex is redox-active and displays metal centred oxidation and reduction responses on the anodic and cathodic sides, respectively, of the Ag/AgCl electrode. Bifunctional heterogeneous electrocatalytic activity of the complex towards O2 and H2 evolution reactions (OER and HER) in neutral aqueous medium has been explored in detail.

Abstract
Chiral l-/d-valine-(1,10-phen)-Cu(ii) complexes that target G-quadruplex DNA were synthesized and thoroughly characterized by UV-vis, IR, EPR, ESI-MS, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray spectroscopy. Complexes 1a and 1b crystallized in the monoclinic P21/c and C2 space groups, respectively. On the basis of Wolfe-Shimer analyses, the binding affinities of 1a and 1b with G-quadruplex telomeric DNA were determined, and 1a exhibited significantly higher binding as compared to 1b. Site selective cleavage of G4-DNA was demonstrated by employing the time-dependent PAGE assay, with 1a exhibiting a significantly higher cleavage rate from A1 to G22 (4.32 (±0.13) μM h-1) than 1b (4.29 (±0.11) μM h-1). The DNA cleavage profile demonstrated that both complexes perform non-random double-strand cleavage by following first-order kinetics (kobs = 0.9432 min-1 for 1a and kobs = 0.6574 min-1 for 1b). Molecular docking simulations were performed with both parallel and anti-parallel topologies of the quadruplex to provide a clear insight on G-quadruplex-complex interactions. Complexes 1a and 1b were found to interact strongly at the minor groove cavity of the quadruplex with preferential selectivity for the parallel vs. anti-parallel quadruplex. The cytotoxic activities of complexes 1a and 1b were evaluated on a few notably important human cancer cell lines, viz, breast (MCF-7), pancreatic strains (BxPC3, AsPC1) and liver (Huh7) by an MTT assay. Both 1a and 1b exhibited pronounced cytotoxic activity with remarkably low IC50 values (1-3 μM) for all tested cancer strains.

All about that base: investigating the role of ligand basicity in pyridyl complexes derived from a copper-Schiff base coordination polymer. Dalton Trans 2019; 48:15553-15559. Abstract
The role of ligand basicity in complex formation has been investigated using monodentate pyridyls or benzimidazole (mP) in combination with a solution-stable species derived form a coordination polymer, [Cu(L)] (where L = 2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene-amino)phenol). The 12 [Cu(L)(mP)n] complexes generated, combined with the {[Cu(L)]2(pP)} complexes from our previous work (where pP is a polypyridyl ligand), allow us to gauge the likelihood of complex formation based on the pKa of the conjugate acid of the pyridyl ligands and Hammett parameter, σ. Above pKa ≈ 4.5, complexes are formed where the only ligands are L2- and mP or pP and the packing interactions are predominantly van der Waals. Below this value, complex formation is unlikely unless there are additional oxygen ligands in the Jahn-Teller axis of the Cu(ii) ion. The structures of two literature [Cu(L)(bP)] complexes, where bP is a chelating bidentate pyridyl ligand are also re-examined to resolve the positional disorder in the [Cu(L)] moiety.

Abstract
Previous employment of the ligands 2-methoxy-6-[(methylimino)methyl]phenol (L1H) and 2-methoxy-6-[(phenylimino)methyl]phenol (L2H) has resulted in the self-assembly of pseudo metallocalix[6]arene complexes of general formulae: [M7(μ3-OH)6(Lx)6](NO3)y (M = Ni(ii), x = 1, y = 2 (1) and Co(ii/iii), x = 2, y = 3 (2)). Extrapolating upon this work, we report the coordination chemistry of ligands 2-methoxy-6-{[(2-methoxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol (L3H), 2-[(benzylimino)methyl]-6-methoxyphenol (L4H), 2-[(benzylamino)methyl]-6-methoxyphenol (L5H) and 2-[(benzylamino)methyl]-4-bromo-6-methoxyphenol (L6H), whose structures are modifications of ligands L1-2H. These ligands are employed in the synthesis and characterisation of the dimetallic complex [Ni(ii)2(L3)3(H2O)](NO3)·2H2O·3MeOH (3); the monometallic complexes [Ni(ii)(L4)2] (4) and [Co(iii)(L4)3]·H2O·MeOH (5a); and the tetranuclear pseudo metallocalix[4]arene complexes: [(NO3)⊂Co(ii)4(μ3-OH)2(L5)4(H2O)2](NO3)·H2O (6), [(NO3)⊂Ni(ii)4(μ3-OH)2(L5)4(H2O)2](NO3)·H2O (7) and [Ni(ii)4(μ3-OH)2(L6)4(NO3)2]·MeCN (8). The tetrametallic 'butterfly' core topologies in 6-8 are discussed with respect to their structural and topological relationship with their heptanuclear [M7] (M = Co(ii), Ni(ii)) pseudo metallocalix[6]arene ancestors (1 and 2).

Abstract
Acylhydrazones are very versatile ligands and their coordination properties can be easily tuned, giving rise to metal complexes with different nuclearities. In the last few years, we have been looking for new pharmacophores able to coordinate simultaneously two metal ions, because many enzymes have two metal ions in the active site and their coordination can be a successful strategy to inhibit the activity of the metalloenzyme. As a part of this ongoing research, we synthesized the acylhydrazone H2L and its complexes with Mg(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II). Their characterization, both in solution--also by means of potentiometric studies--and in the solid state, evidenced the ability of the o-vanillin hydrazone scaffold to give rise to different types of metal complexes, depending on the metal and the reaction conditions. Furthermore, we evaluated both the free ligand and its metal complexes in in vitro studies against a panel of diverse DNA- and RNA-viruses. In particular, the Mg(II), Mn(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes had EC50 values in the low micromolar range, with a pronounced activity against vaccinia virus.
