Abstract
The reaction of the Schiff base 2-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene-amino]-ethanol (HL), which is formed by reaction of 2-amino-ethanol and 2-acetyl-pyridine with CuBr2 in ethanol results in the isolation of the new polymeric complex poly[hexa-μ-bromido-bis-{2-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene-amino]-ethano-lato}tetra-copper(II)], [Cu4Br6(C9H11N2O)2]n or [Cu4Br6 L 2]n. The asymmetric unit of the crystal structure of the polymeric [Cu4Br6 L 2]n complex is composed by four copper (II) cations, two monodeprotonated mol-ecules of the ligand, and six bromide anions, which act as bridges. The ligand mol-ecules act in a tridentate fashion through their azomethine nitro-gen atoms, their pyridine nitro-gen atoms, and their alcoholate O atoms. The crystal structure shows two types of geometries in the coordination polyhedrons around Cu2+ ions. Two copper cations are situated in a square-based pyramidal environment, while the two other copper cations adopt a tetra-hedral geometry. Bromides anions acting as bridges between two metal ions connect the units, resulting in a tetra-nuclear polymer compound.

Abstract
In this current work we have prepared a Schiff base ligand, (HL) derived from 5- nitropyridine-2-amine with 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and its Cu(II), and Zn(II) in 2:1 stoichiometric ratio (2HL:M). The formation of the ligand and the metal complexes were evaluated by means of MS, FT-IR, UV-Visible, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and thermogravimetric methods. The free radical scavenging activity of compounds was evaluated through a sequence of in vitro assays viz., DPPH, ABTS and Superoxide where BHA was used as a positive controller. In vitro α-glucosidase inhibitory activities showed that complexes had considerable inhibitory potential when compared to the ligand.

Abstract
In the title complex mol-ecule, [Cd(C13H11N4O2)2], the Cd atom is coordinated in a distorted octa-hedral geometry by two tridentate ligands synthesized from 2-hy-droxy-benzohydrazide and 1-(pyrazin-2-yl)ethan-1-one. The mol-ecule has twofold crystallographic symmetry and is isomorphous to its Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn counterparts.

Abstract
A new hexa-nuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu3(μ2-1κNO2,2κNO2-L)(μ-Cl)2(Cl)(MeOH)(DMF)2]2 (1), where H4L = N'1,N'2-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)oxalohydrazide, was synthesized and fully characterized by IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 and the dinuclear oxidovanadium(V) one [{VO(OEt)(EtOH)}2(1κNO2,2κNO2-L)]·2H2O (2) were used as catalyst precursors for the neat oxidation of primary (cinnamyl alcohol) and secondary (1-phenyl ethanol, benzhydrol) benzyl alcohols and of the secondary aliphatic alcohol cyclohexanol, under microwave irradiation using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant. Oxidations proceed via radical mechanisms. The copper(II) compound 1 exhibited higher catalytic activity than the vanadium(V) complex 2 for all the tested alcohol substrates. The highest conversion was found for 1-phenylethanol, yielding 95.3% of acetophenone in the presence of 1 and in solvent and promoter-free conditions. This new Cu(II) complex was found to exhibit higher activity under milder reaction conditions than the reported aroylhydrazone Cu(II) analogues.

Abstract
Three novel coordination compounds, [Cu(ca)2(Hbae)2] (1), [Cu(va)2(Hbae)2] (2) and [Cu4(va)4(bae)4]·H2O (3), have been prepared by self-assembly reactions of copper(ii) chloride (1 and 2) or tetrafluoroborate (3) and CH3OH (1 and 3) or CH3CN (2) solution of 2-benzylaminoethanol (Hbae) and cinnamic (Hca, 1) or valeric (Hva, 2 and 3) acid. Crystallographic analysis revealed that both 1 and 2 have mononuclear crystal structures, wherein the complex molecules are H-bonded forming extended supramolecular chains. The tetranuclear structure of 3 is based on the {Cu4(μ3-O)4} core, wherein the metal atoms are bound together by μ3 oxygen bridges from 2-benzylaminoethanol forming an overall cubane-like configuration. The strong hydrogen bonding in 1-3 leads to the joining of the neighbouring molecules into 1D chains. Concentration-dependent ESI-MS studies disclosed the equilibria between di-, tri- and tetranuclear species in solutions of 1-3. All three compounds act as catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of o-aminophenol to the phenoxazinone chromophore (phenoxazinone synthase-like activity), with the maximum reaction rates of 4.0 × 10-7, 2.5 × 10-7 and 2.1 × 10-7 M s-1 for 1, 2 and 3, respectively, supported by the quantitative yield of the product after 24 h. The dependence of the reaction rates on catalyst concentrations is evidence of reaction orders higher than one relative to the catalyst. Kinetic and ESI-MS data allowed us to assume that the tetranuclear species, originating from 1, 2 and 3 in solution, possess considerably higher activity than the species of lower nuclearity. Mechanistic and isotopic 18O-labelling experiments suggested that o-aminophenol coordinates to CuII species with the formation of reactive intermediates, while the oxygen from 18O2 is not incorporated into the phenoxazinone chromophore.

Abstract
The intermolecular interactions in the structures of a series of Schiff base ligands have been thoroughly studied. These ligands can be obtained in different forms, namely, as the free base 2-[(2E)-2-(1H-imidazol-4-ylmethylidene)-1-methylhydrazinyl]pyridine, C10H11N5, 1, the hydrates 2-[(2E)-2-(1H-imidazol-2-ylmethylidene)-1-methylhydrazinyl]-1H-benzimidazole monohydrate, C12H12N6·H2O, 2, and 2-{(2E)-1-methyl-2-[(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methylidene]hydrazinyl}-1H-benzimidazole 1.25-hydrate, C13H14N6·1.25H2O, 3, the monocationic hydrate 5-{(1E)-[2-(1H-1,3-benzodiazol-2-yl)-2-methylhydrazinylidene]methyl}-1H-imidazol-3-ium trifluoromethanesulfonate monohydrate, C12H13N6+·CF3O3S-·H2O, 5, and the dicationic 2-{(2E)-1-methyl-2-[(1H-imidazol-3-ium-2-yl)methylidene]hydrazinyl}pyridinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate), C10H13N52+·2CF3O3S-, 6. The connection between the forms and the preferred intermolecular interactions is described and further studied by means of the calculation of the interaction energies between the neutral and charged components of the crystal structures. These studies show that, in general, the most important contribution to the stabilization energy of the crystal is provided by π-π interactions, especially between charged ligands, while the details of the crystal architecture are influenced by directional interactions, especially relatively strong hydrogen bonds. In one of the structures, a very interesting example of the nontypical F...O interaction was found and its length, 2.859 (2) Å, is one of the shortest ever reported.

Abstract
The 1D Cu(II) coordination polymers [Cu3(L1)(NO3)4(H2O)2]n (1) and [Cu2(H2L2)(NO3)(H2O)2]n(NO3)n (2) have been synthesized using the aroylhyrazone Schiff bases N'1,N'2-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)oxalohydrazide (H2L1) and N'1,N'3-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)malonohydrazide (H4L2), respectively. They have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), single crystal X-ray diffraction and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements (for 2). The ligand (L1)2− coordinates in the iminol form in 1, whereas the amide coordination is observed for (H2L2)2− in 2. Either the ligand bridge or the nitrate bridge in 2 mediates weak antiferromagnetic coupling. The catalytic performance of 1 and 2 has been investigated toward the solvent-free microwave-assisted oxidation of a secondary alcohol (1-phenylethanol used as model substrate). At 120°C and in the presence of the nitroxyl radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperydil-1-oxyl (TEMPO), the complete conversion of 1-phenylethanol into acetophenone occurs with TOFs up to 1,200 h−1.

Abstract
The mononuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu((kNN′O-HL)(H2O)2] (1) was synthesized using N-acetylpyrazine-2-carbohydrazide (H2L) and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Two Fe(III) complexes derived from the same ligand viz, mononuclear [Fe((kNN′O-HL)Cl2] (2) and the binuclear [Fe(kNN′O-HL)Cl(μ-OMe)]2 (3) (synthesized as reported earlier), were also used in this study. The catalytic activity of these three complexes (1–3) was examined towards the oxidation of alcohols using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidising agent under solvent-free microwave irradiation conditions. Primary and secondary benzyl alcohols (benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylethanol), and secondary aliphatic alcohols (cyclohexanol) were used as model substrates for this study. A comparison of their catalytic efficiency was performed. Complex 1 exhibited the highest activity in the presence of TEMPO as promoter for the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol with a maximum yield of 91.3% of acetophenone.

Abstract
The new aroylhydrazone N'-(di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazide (HL) species, rich in N-donor sites, has been used to synthesize Cu(ii) compounds with different nuclearities, viz. the binuclear [Cu2(μ-1κN3,2κN2O-L)(Cl)3(MeOH)] (1), the octanuclear [Cu4(μ-1κN3,2κN2O-L)2(μ-Cl)3(Cl)3]2 (2) and the 1D coordination polymer [Cu3(μ3-1κN3,2κN2O,3κN-L)(μ-NO3)(NO3)3(H2O)3]n·nNO3 (3). They have been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of 2 and 3 have been explored using variable temperature magnetic measurements. The catalytic performances of the compounds were evaluated towards the peroxidative oxidation of o-, p- and m-xylenes under microwave irradiation, leading to the formation of the corresponding methyl benzyl alcohol, tolualdehyde and toluic acid as the major products. Complex 3 exhibits the best catalytic activity towards the oxidation of p-xylene with a total yield of 37% (4-methylbenzyl alcohol + p-tolualdehyde + p-toluic acid).

Abstract
Gel adsorbents are promising for pollutant removal from the wastewater. Herein, an acylhydrazone gel is developed from acylhydrazide-terminated pentaerythritol (PAT) and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) based on dynamic covalent acylhydrazone chemistry. PAT-TFP gel is stable under various conditions, while it shows reversible Cu2+ adsorption and desorption. PAT-TFP gel is studied as a versatile adsorbent for the capture of a range of (bulky) organic contaminants and heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Fast and good adsorption capacities are achieved for various dyes (rhodamine B and methyl orange), amines (aniline, p-chloroaniline, 4-methylaniline, and p-aminobenzoic acid), phenols (phenol, 1-naphthol, p-methylphenol, and bisphenol A), and metal ions (Cu2+, Cr3+, and Hg2+). The maximum adsorption capacity is 107.5 mg g-1 for Cu2+ and the equilibrium adsorption time is 30 min. PAT-TFP gel can be regenerated efficiently and used repeatedly.

Abstract
The reaction of the Schiff base (3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H3L) with a copper(II) salt of a base of a strong acid, i.e., nitrate, chloride or sulphate, yielded the mononuclear complexes [Cu(H2L)(NO3)(H2O)] (1), [Cu(H2L)Cl]·2MeOH (2) and the binuclear complex [{Cu(H2L)}2(µ-SO4)]·2MeOH (3), respectively, with H2L(-) in the keto form. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by elemental analysis, Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray crystallography. All compounds act as efficient catalysts towards the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, under mild conditions. In the presence of an acid promoter, overall yields (based on the alkane) up to 25% and a turnover number (TON) of 250 (TOF of 42 h(-1)) after 6 h, were achieved.

Three copper cubanes with the unusual S = 1 ground state have been characterized and their magnetic properties rationalized as a function of the asymmetry of the {Cu4O4} cage and correlated with the Cu–O–Cu bond angles.

Abstract
Two water soluble heterometallic potassium–dioxidovanadium polymers, [KVO2(L1)]n (1) and [KVO2(L2)(H2O)]n (2) [H2L1= (2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide and H2L2=(2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide], have been synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The antiproliferative potentials of 1 and 2 were examined towards human colorectal carcinoma (HCT116), and lung (A549) and breast (MCF7) adenocarcinoma cell lines. 1 exhibits a high cytotoxic activity against colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT116), with IC50 lower than those for cisplatin.

Abstract
The reaction between [dpktch] and [M(OAc)2] (M=group 12 metal atom) in refluxing CH3CN gave [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O (n=0 or 1). The infrared and (1)H NMR spectra are consistent with the coordination of [η(2)-O,O-OAc] and [η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H](-) and the proposed formulations. The electronic absorption spectra of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O measured in non-aqueous solvents revealed a highly intense intra-ligand-charge transfer (ILCT) transition due to π-π∗ of dpk followed by dpk→thiophene charge transfer. The electronic transitions of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O are solvent and concentration dependent. Spectrophotometric titrations of dmso solutions of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O with benzoic acid revealed irreversible inter-conversion between [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O and it conjugate acid [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch)]·nH2O pointing to ligand exchange between the acetate and benzoate anions. When CH2Cl2 solutions of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O were titrated with dmso, changes appeared pointing to solvolysis or ligand exchange reactions. Electrochemical measurements on dmso solutions of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O divulged irreversible redox transformations consistent with electrochemical decomposition of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O. The solid state structure of a single crystal of [Cd(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)2] obtained from a dmso solution of [Cd(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O confirmed the ligand scrambling of [M(η(2)-O,O-OAc)(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)]·nH2O. The extended structure of [Cd(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)2] revealed stacks of [Cd(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)2] locked via a network of hydrogen bonds. A significant amount of empty space (35.5%) was observed in the solid state structure of [Cd(η(3)-N,N,O-dpktch-H)2].
