A chemiluminescent lantern: a coordination cage catalysed oxidation of luminol followed by chemiluminescence resonance energy-transfer

A molecule of luminol bound as guest inside a Co₈ coordination cage host undergoes oxidation by H₂O₂ to generate chemiluminescence by a process in which the Co(II) ions in the cage superstructure activate the H₂O₂: accordingly the cage not only co-locates the reactants but also acts as a redox partner in the catalysis. The luminescence from oxidation of the cavity-bound luminol can transfer its excitation energy to surface-bound fluorescein molecules in an unusual example of Chemiluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (CRET).

Substituent-Induced Control of fac/mer Isomerism in Azine-NHC Fe(II) Complexes

The stereoselective synthesis of geometrical iron(II) complexes bearing azine-NHC ligands is described. Facial and meridional selectivity is achieved as a function of the steric demand of the azine unit, with no remarkable influence of the carbene nature. More specifically, meridional complexes are obtained upon selecting bulky 5-mesityl-substituted pyridyl coordinating units. Unexpectedly, increase of the steric hindrance in the α position with respect to the N coordinating atom results in an exclusive facial configuration, which is in stark contrast to the meridional selectivity induced by other reported α-substituted bidentate ligands. Investigation of the structure and the optical and electrochemical properties of the here-described complexes has revealed the non-negligible effect of the fac/mer ligand configuration around the metal center.

Beyond Platonic: How to Build Metal-Organic Polyhedra Capable of Binding Low-Symmetry, Information-Rich Molecular Cargoes

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry has advanced rapidly in recent years. Much work in this area has focused on the formation of hollow self-assembled metal-organic architectures and exploration of the applications of their confined nanospaces. These discrete, soluble structures incorporate metal ions as 'glue' to link organic ligands together into polyhedra.Most of the architectures employed thus far have been highly symmetrical, as these have been the easiest to prepare. Such high-symmetry structures contain pseudospherical cavities, and so typically bind roughly spherical guests. Biomolecules and high-value synthetic compounds are rarely isotropic, highly-symmetrical species. To bind, sense, separate, and transform such substrates, new, lower-symmetry, metal-organic cages are needed. Herein we summarize recent approaches, which taken together form the first draft of a handbook for the design of higher-complexity, lower-symmetry, self-assembled metal-organic architectures.

A family of diastereomeric dodecanuclear coordination cages based on inversion of chirality of individual triangular cyclic helicate faces

The dodecanuclear coordination cage [Cd12(Lnaph)12(Lmes)4](BF4)24 consists of a set of four triangular, trinuclear helical panels {Cd3(μ-Lnaph)3}6+ (based on ditopic bridging ligands Lnaph), which are connected by four tritopic ligands Lmes. The result is that the four triangular helical panels and the four Lmes-capped triangular faces of the cuboctahedral core form two alternating subsets of the eight triangular faces of the cuboctahedron. Crystallographic investigations revealed that the triangular helicate faces can have 'clockwise' (C) or 'anticlockwise' (A) helicity, and that the helicity of each face can vary independently of the others as they are mechanically separated. This generates a set of three diastereoisomers in which all four cyclic helicate faces in the cuboctahedron have the same chirality (AAAA/CCCC enantiomers with T symmetry; AAAC/CCCA enantiomers with C 3 symmetry; and achiral AACC with S 4 symmetry). This mirrors the known behaviour of many simpler M4L6 tetrahedral cages which can likewise exist as T, C 3 or S 4 isomers according to the sense of tris-chelate chirality around each individual metal centre: but here it is translated onto a much larger scale by the four chiral units being entire trinuclear helicate faces rather than single metal centres. 1H NMR spectroscopy confirms the presence of the three diastereoisomers with their different molecular symmetries in a ratio slightly different from what is expected on purely statistical grounds; and 1H NMR measurements on a non-equilibrium sample (enriched by manual crystal-picking before preparing the solution) showed that the distribution does not change over several weeks in solution, indicating the kinetic inertness of the cage assemblies.

Structural Characterization and Lifetimes of Triple-Stranded Helical Coinage Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Calculations

This work reports on a series of polynuclear complexes containing a trinuclear Cu, Ag, or Au core in combination with the fac-isomer of the metalloligand [Ru(pypzH)3 ](PF6 )2 (pypzH=3-(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazole). These (in case of the Ag and Au containing species) newly synthesized compounds of the general formula [{Ru(pypz)3 }2 M3 ](PF6 ) (2: M=Cu; 3: M=Ag; 4: M=Au) contain triple-stranded helical structures in which two ruthenium moieties are connected by three N-M-N (M=Cu, Ag, Au) bridges. In order to obtain a detailed description of the structure both in the electronic ground and excited states, extensive spectroscopic and quantum chemical calculations are applied. The equilateral coinage metal core triangle in the electronic ground state of 2-4 is distorted in the triplet state. Furthermore, the analyses offer a detailed description of electronic excitations. By using time-resolved IR spectroscopy from the microsecond down to the nanosecond regime, both the vibrational spectra and the lifetime of the lowest lying electronically excited triplet state can be determined. The lifetimes of these almost only non-radiative triplet states of 2-4 show an unusual effect in a way that the Au-containing complex 4 has a lifetime which is by more than a factor of five longer than in case of the Cu complex 2. Thus, the coinage metals have a significant effect on the electronically excited state, which is localized on a pypz ligand coordinated to the Ru atom indicating an unusual cooperative effect between two moieties of the complex.

Excited State Dynamics of Bistridentate and Trisbidentate RuII Complexes of Quinoline-Pyrazole Ligands

Three homoleptic ruthenium(II) complexes, [Ru(Q3PzH)₃]²⁺, [Ru(Q1Pz)₃]²⁺, and [Ru(DQPz)₂]²⁺, based on the quinoline-pyrazole ligands, Q3PzH (8-(3-pyrazole)-quinoline), Q1Pz (8-(1-pyrazole)-quinoline), and DQPz (bis(quinolinyl)-1,3-pyrazole), have been spectroscopically and theoretically investigated. Spectral component analysis, transient absorption spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and ligand exchange reactions with different chlorination agents reveal that the excited state dynamics for Ru(II) complexes with these biheteroaromatic ligands differ significantly from that of traditional polypyridyl complexes. Despite the high energy and low reorganization energy of the excited state, nonradiative decay dominates even at liquid nitrogen temperatures, where triplet metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer emission quantum yields range from 0.7 to 3.8%, and microsecond excited state lifetimes are observed. In contrast to traditional polypyridyl complexes where ligand exchange is facilitated by expansion of the metal-ligand bonds to stabilize a metal-centered state, photoinduced ligand exchange occurs in the bidentate complexes despite no substantial MC state population, while the tridentate complex is extremely photostable despite an activated decay route, highlighting the versatile photochemistry of nonpolypyridine ligands.

Crystal structure, electrochemical and spectroscopic investigation of mer-tris-[2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl-κN3)pyrimidine-κN1]ruthenium(II) bis-(hexa-fluorido-phosphate) trihydrate

The crystal structure of the title compound, [Ru(C7H6N4)3](PF6)2·3H2O, a novel RuII complex with the bidentate ligand 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyrimidine, comprises a complex cation in the meridional form exclusively, with a distorted octa-hedral geometry about the ruthenium(II) cation. The Ru-N bonds involving imidazole N atoms are comparatively shorter than the Ru-N bonds from pyrimidine because of the stronger basicity of the imidazole moiety. The three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network involves all species in the lattice with water mol-ecules inter-acting with both counter-ions and NH hydrogen atoms from the complex. The supra-molecular structure of the crystal also shows that two units of the complex bind strongly through a mutual N-H⋯N bond. The electronic absorption spectrum of the complex displays an asymmetric band at 421 nm, which might point to the presence of two metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) bands. Electrochemical measurements show a quasi-reversible peak referring to the RuIII/RuII reduction at 0.87 V versus Ag/AgCl.

Maximizing Coordination Capsule-Guest Polar Interactions in Apolar Solvents Reveals Significant Binding

Guest encapsulation underpins the functional properties of self-assembled capsules yet identifying systems capable of strongly binding small organic molecules in solution remains a challenge. Most coordination capsules rely on the hydrophobic effect to ensure effective solution-phase association. In contrast, we show that using non-interacting anions in apolar solvents can maximize favorable interactions between a cationic Pd₂ L₄ host and charge-neutral guests resulting in a dramatic increase in binding strength. With quinone-type guests, association constants in excess of 10⁸  m^-1 were observed, comparable to the highest previously recorded constant for a metallosupramolecular capsule. Modulation of optoelectronic properties of the guests was also observed, with encapsulation either changing or switching-on luminescence not present in the bulk phase.

Imposing control on self-assembly: rational design and synthesis of a mixed-metal, mixed-ligand coordination cage containing four types of component

Retrosynthetic analysis of a [M16L24]32+ coordination cage shows how it can be assembled rationally, in a stepwise manner, using a combination of kinetically inert and kinetically labile components. Combination of the components of fac-[Ru(Lph)3](PF6)2, Cd(BF4)2 and Lnaph in the necessary 4 : 12 : 12 stoichiometry afforded crystals of [Ru4Cd12(Lph)12(Lnaph)12]X32 (X = a mono-anion) in which the location of the two types of metal ion [Ru(ii) or Cd(ii)] at specific vertices in the metal-ion array, and the two types of bridging ligand (Lph and Lnaph) along specific edges, is completely controlled by the synthetic strategy. The incorporation of four different types of component at pre-determined positions in a coordination cage superstructure represents a substantial advance in imposing control on the self-assembly of complex metallosupramolecular entities.

In this perspective, we highlight the issue of meridional (mer) and facial (fac) orientation of asymmetrical diimines in tris-chelate transition metal complexes. Diimine ligands have long been the workhorse of coordination chemistry, and whilst there are now good strategies to isolate materials where the inherent metal centered chirality is under almost complete control, and systematic methodologies to isolate heteroleptic complexes, the conceptually simple geometrical isomerism has not been widely investigated. In systems where the two donor atoms are significantly different in terms of the σ-donor and π-accepting ability, the fac isomer is likely to be the thermodynamic product. For the diimine complexes with two trigonal planar nitrogen atoms there is much more subtlety to the system, and external factors such as the solvent, lattice packing and the various steric considerations play a delicate role in determining the observed and isolable product. In this article we discuss the possibilities to control the isomeric ratio in labile systems, consider the opportunities to separate inert complexes and discuss the observed differences in their spectroscopic properties. Finally we report on the ligand orientation in supramolecular systems where facial coordination leads to simple regular structures such as helicates and tetrahedra, but the ability of the ligand system to adopt a mer orientation enables self-assembled structures of considerable beauty and complexity.

Stepwise assembly of mixed-metal coordination cages containing both kinetically inert and kinetically labile metal ions: introduction of metal-centred redox and photophysical activity at specific sites

Stepwise preparation of the heterometallic octanuclear coordination cages [(M(a))4(M(b))4L12](16+) is reported, in which M(a) = Ru or Os and M(b) = Cd or Co (all in their +2 oxidation state). This requires initial preparation of the kinetically inert mononuclear complexes [(M(a))L3](2+) in which L is a ditopic ligand with two bidentate chelating pyrazolyl-pyridine units: in the complexes [(M(a))L3](2+) one terminus of each ligand is bound to the metal ion, such that the complex has three pendant bidentate sites at which cage assembly can propagate by coordination to additional labile ions M(b) in a separate step. Thus, combination of four [(M(a))L3](2+) units and four [M(b)](2+) ions results in assembly of the complete cages [(M(a))4(M(b))4L12](16+) in which a metal ion lies at each of the eight vertices, and a bridging ligand spans each of the twelve edges, of a cube. The different types of metal ion necessarily alternate around the periphery with each bridging ligand bound to one metal ion of each type. All four cages have been structurally characterised: in the Ru(ii)/Cd(ii) cage (reported in a recent communication) the Ru(ii) and Cd(ii) ions are crystallographically distinct; in the other three cages [Ru(ii)/Co(ii), Os(ii)/Cd(ii) and Os(ii)/Co(ii), reported here] the ions are disordered around the periphery such that every metal site refines as a 50 : 50 mixture of the two metal atom types. The incorporation of Os(ii) units into the cages results in both redox activity [a reversible Os(ii)/Os(iii) couple for all four metal ions simultaneously, at a modest potential] and luminescence [the Os(ii) units have luminescent (3)MLCT excited states which will be good photo-electron donors] being incorporated into the cage superstructure.

Guest-induced transformation of a porphyrin-edged Fe(II)4L6 capsule into a Cu(I)Fe(II)2L4 fullerene receptor

The combination of a bent diamino(nickel(II) porphyrin) with 2-formylpyridine and Fe(II) yielded an Fe(II) 4 L6 cage. Upon treatment with the fullerenes C60 or C70 , this cage was found to transform into a new host-guest complex incorporating three Fe(II) centers and four porphyrin ligands, in an arrangement that is hypothesized to maximize π interactions between the porphyrin units of the host and the fullerene guest bound within its central cavity. The new complex shows coordinative unsaturation at one of the Fe(II) centers as the result of the incommensurate metal-to-ligand ratio, which enabled the preparation of a heterometallic cone-shaped Cu(I) Fe(II) 2 L4 adduct of C60 or C70 .

Stepwise assembly of an adamantoid Ru₄Ag₆ cage by control of metal coordination geometry at specific sites

The geometrically pure 'complex ligand' fac-[Ru(L(ph))3](2+), in which three pendant bidentate binding sites are located on one face of the complex, reacts with Ag(I) ions to form the adamantoid decanuclear cage [{Ru(L(ph))3}4Ag6](PF6)14 which contains a 6-coordinate Ru(II) ion at each vertex of a large tetrahedron and a 4-coordinate Ag(I) ion along each edge.

A supramolecular sorting hat: stereocontrol in metal-ligand self-assembly by complementary hydrogen bonding

A combination of self-complementary hydrogen bonding and metal-ligand interactions allows stereocontrol in the self-assembly of prochiral ligand scaffolds. A unique, non-tetrahedral M4L6 structure is observed upon multicomponent self-assembly of 2,7-diaminofluorenol with 2-formylpyridine and Fe(ClO4)2. The stereochemical outcome of the assembly is controlled by self-complementary hydrogen bonding between both individual ligands and a suitably sized counterion as template. This hydrogen-bonding-mediated stereoselective metal-ligand assembly allows the controlled formation of nonsymmetric discrete cage structures from previously unexploited ligand scaffolds.
