Heterometallic cages: synthesis and applications

High symmetry metallosupramolecular architectures (MSAs) have been exploited for a range of applications including molecular recognition, catalysis and drug delivery. Recently there have been increasing efforts to enhance those applications by generating reduced symmetry MSAs. While there are several emerging methods for generating lower symmetry MSAs, this tutorial review examines the general methods used for synthesizing heterometallic MSAs with a particular focus on heterometallic cages. Additionally, the intrinsic properties of the cages and their potential emerging applications as host-guest systems and reaction catalysts are described.

Orthogonal Initiation of Molecular Motion Devices by Two Chemical Fuels

Herein, we demonstrate the selective dissipative and orthogonal actuation of two distinct molecular devices controlled by alternate fuel use. When the multicomponent ensemble of [2]rotaxane 1 and turnstile [Cu(2)(3)]+ was charged with AgBF4 as chemical fuel (Fuel 1) together with NEt3/PhCH2Br (cofuels), the transiently formed [Ag(1)]+ showed a stochastic shuttling of the silver macrocycle between two degenerate triazole stations on the thread (k298 = 1.2 × 105 s-1), whereas [Cu(2)(3)]+ was unperturbed. Instead, treatment of the mixture with PPh3 as an alternative fuel (Fuel 2) in the presence of oxidant 4 (cofuel) generated the complex [Cu(3)(PPh3)2]+ and transient thermal motion in rotor 2 (k298 = 4.9 × 104 s-1), whereas rotaxane 1 stayed dormant. Thus, two distinct chemical fuels selectively and orthogonally activated two distinct transient motion devices from a multicomponent mixture. In total, four interference-free dissipative cycles were demonstrated by using alternating fuel additions.

Self-organization of metallo-supramolecular polymer networks by free formation of pyridine-phenanthroline heteroleptic complexes

Nature employs spontaneous self-organization of supramolecular bonds to create complex matter capable of adaptation and self-healing. Accordingly, the self-sorting of unlike ligands towards a cooperative heteroleptic complex or narcistic homoleptic association in a mixed ligand system is frequently employed to form interchangeable stimuli-responsive complex geometries with a wide range of applications. This notion is however just rarely employed in the organization of polymer networks. In this paper, we report the free-formation of heteroleptic complexes between tetra-am poly(ethylene glycol) (tetraPEG) precursors functionalized either with pyridine (tetraPy) or phenanthroline (tetraEPhen). Among a wide range of studied metal ions, tetraPy could form a network only in combination with Pd2+, presumably with a square-planar geometry, highlighting the importance of complex strength and stability in forming gels with monodentate ligands. Also, mixed networks with tetraEPhen form only in combination with Pd2+ and Fe2+, with strengths surpassing those of individual components and stabilities incomparable to those of parent networks, indicative of heteroleptic complexation. Extensive rheological, UV-vis, and DFT simulation studies revealed the coexistence of different coordination geometries, with an octahedral arrangement prevailing in the presence of Fe2+ and a square-planar geometry in the presence of Pd2+. Therefore, this study offers new opportunities for the development of stimuli-responsive topology-switching polymer networks.

Nanotubule inclusion in the channels formed by a six-fold interpenetrated, triperiodic framework

When reacted together with uranyl ions under solvo-hydrothermal conditions, a bis(pyridiniumcarboxylate) zwitterion (L) and tricarballylic acid (H3tca) give the complex [NH4]2[UO2(L)2][UO2(tca)]4·2H2O (1). The two ligands are segregated into different units, an anionic nanotubule for tca3- and a six-fold interpenetrated cationic framework with lvt topology for L. The entangled framework defines large channels which contain the square-profile nanotubules. Complex 1 has a photoluminescence quantum yield of 19% and its emission spectrum shows the superposition of the signals due to the two independent species.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12(L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation also called subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy6(L)6 or Dy12(L)8 aggregates resulting from second-order template effects of the base and the lanthanide counterions used in these processes. XRD analysis revealed unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures in which the bis(hydrazone) ligand L adopts different conformations and shows remarkable differences in its mode of metal coordination. While a molecule of trimethylamine acts as a secondary template that fills the void of the Dy6(L)6 assembly, sodium ions take on this role for the formation of heterobimetallic Dy12(L)8 by occupying vacant coordination sites, thus demonstrating that these processes can be steered in different directions upon subtle changes of reaction conditions. Furthermore, Dy6(L)6 shows an interesting spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, which is amongst the largest values within multinuclear lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Guest-Driven Self-Assembly and Chiral Induction of Photofunctional Lanthanide Tetrahedral Cages

Chiral luminescent lanthanide-organic cages have many potential applications in enantioselective recognition, sensing, and asymmetric catalysis. However, due to the paucity of structures and their limited cavities, host-guest chemistry with lanthanide-organic cages has remained elusive so far. Herein, we report a guest-driven self-assembly and chiral induction approach for the construction of otherwise inaccessible Ln₄L₄-type (Ln = lanthanide ions, i.e., Eu^III, Tb^III; L = ligand) tetrahedral hosts. Single crystal analyses on a series of host-guest complexes reveal remarkable guest-adaptive cavity breathing on the tetrahedral cages, reflecting the advantage of the variation tolerance on coordination geometry of the f-elements. Meanwhile, noncovalent confinement of pyrene within the lanthanide cage not only leads to diminishment of its excimer emission but also facilitates guest to host energy transfer, opening up a new sensitization window for the lanthanide luminescence on the cage. Moreover, stereoselective self-assembly of either Λ₄- or Δ₄- type Eu₄L₄ cages has been realized via chiral induction with R/S-BINOL or R/S-SPOL templates, as confirmed by NMR, circular dichroism (CD), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high dissymmetry factors (g_lum) up to ±0.125.

Solar energy conversion using first row d-block metal coordination compound sensitizers and redox mediators

The use of renewable energy is essential for the future of the Earth, and solar photons are the ultimate source of energy to satisfy the ever-increasing global energy demands. Photoconversion using dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) is becoming an established technology to contribute to the sustainable energy market, and among state-of-the art DSCs are those which rely on ruthenium(ii) sensitizers and the triiodide/iodide (I3 -/I-) redox mediator. Ruthenium is a critical raw material, and in this review, we focus on the use of coordination complexes of the more abundant first row d-block metals, in particular copper, iron and zinc, as dyes in DSCs. A major challenge in these DSCs is an enhancement of their photoconversion efficiencies (PCEs) which currently lag significantly behind those containing ruthenium-based dyes. The redox mediator in a DSC is responsible for regenerating the ground state of the dye. Although the I3 -/I- couple has become an established redox shuttle, it has disadvantages: its redox potential limits the values of the open-circuit voltage (V OC) in the DSC and its use creates a corrosive chemical environment within the DSC which impacts upon the long-term stability of the cells. First row d-block metal coordination compounds, especially those containing cobalt, and copper, have come to the fore in the development of alternative redox mediators and we detail the progress in this field over the last decade, with particular attention to Cu2+/Cu+ redox mediators which, when coupled with appropriate dyes, have achieved V OC values in excess of 1000 mV. We also draw attention to aspects of the recyclability of DSCs.

Chemistry on the Complex: Derivatization of TiO4 N2 -Based Complexes and Application to Multi-Step Synthesis

The chemistry on octahedral TiO₄ N₂ -complexes is described. The Ti(IV)-based precursors are composed of two 3,3'-diphenyl-2,2'-biphenolato ligands (1) and one substituted 1,10-phenanthroline ligand (2-5). The application of imine condensation, palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation or copper-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition allowed the grafting of various new groups onto these species. In particular Sonogashira reactions permitted to observe an excellent conversion of the starting complexes. This systematic study enabled to compile the factors required to preserve the framework of the complexes in the course of a chemical transformation. Thanks to this chemistry realized on the complex, the Ti(1)₂ fragment was used as a protecting group to develop a multi-step synthesis of a bis-phenanthroline compound (12), for which the synthesis without this protection failed. Thus, a dinuclear complex [Ti₂ (1)₄ (12)] was first prepared starting from complex precursor bearing an acetylenic function via a Hay coupling reaction. This was followed by a deprotection step affording 12. Overall, this work illustrates how the Ti(1)₂ fragment could be an useful tool for the preparation of unprecedented diimine compounds.

Self-assembly of a trigonal bipyramidal architecture with stabilisation of iron in three spin states

Self-assembly and characterisation of a supramolecular trigonal bipyramidal iron cage containing an [Fe^III(μ₂-F)₆(Fe^II)₃]³⁺ star motif at its core is reported. The complex can be formed in a one step reaction using an heterotopic ligand that supports site-specific incorporation of iron in three distinct electronic configurations: low-spin Fe^II, high-spin Fe^II and high-spin Fe^III, with iron(II) tetrafluoroborate as the source of the bridging fluorides. Formation of a μ₂-F bridged mixed-valence Fe^II-Fe^III star is unprecedented. The peripheral high-spin Fe^II centres of the mixed-valence tetranuclear star incorporated in the iron cage are highly anisotropic and engage in F-mediated antiferromagnetic exchange with the central Fe^III ion.

6,6'-Ditriphenylamine-2,2'-bipyridine: Coordination Chemistry and Electrochemical and Photophysical Properties

A 2,2'-bipyridine with bulky triphenylamine substituents in the 6 and 6' positions of the ligand (6,6'-ditriphenylamine-2,2'-bipyridine, 6,6'-diTPAbpy) was generated. Despite the steric bulk, the ligand readily formed bis(homoleptic) complexes with copper(I) and silver(I) ions. Unfortunately, efforts to use the 6,6'-diTPAbpy system to generate heteroleptic [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(bpy)]⁺ complexes were unsuccessful with only the [Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)₂](PF₆) complex observed. The 6,6'-diTPAbpy ligand could also be reacted with 6-coordinate metal ions that featured small ancillary ligands, namely, the [Re(CO)₃Cl] and [Ru(CO)₂Cl₂] fragments. While the complexes could be formed in good yields, the steric bulk of the TPA units does alter the coordination geometry. This is most readily seen in the [(6,6'-diTPAbpy)Re(CO)₃Cl] complex where the Re(I) ion is forced to sit 23° out of the plane formed by the bpy unit. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the family of compounds were also examined. 6,6'-diTPAbpy exhibits a strong ILCT absorption band (356 nm, 50 mM^-1 cm^-1) which displays a small increase in intensity for the homoleptic complexes ([Cu(6,6'-diTPAbpy)₂]⁺; 353 nm, 72 mM^-1 cm^-1, [Ag(6,6'-diTPAbpy)₂]⁺; 353 nm, 75 mM^-1 cm^-1), despite containing 2 equiv of the ligand, attributed to an increased dihedral angle between the TPA and bpy moieties. For the 6-coordinate complexes the ILCT band is further decreased in intensity and overlaps with MLCT bands, consistent with a further increased TPA-bpy dihedral angle. Emission from the ¹ILCT state is observed at 436 nm (τ = 4.4 ns) for 6,6'-diTPAbpy and does not shift for the Cu, Ag, and Re complexes, although an additional ³MLCT emission is observed for [Re(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)₃Cl] (640 nm, τ = 13.8 ns). No emission was observed for [Ru(6,6'-diTPAbpy)(CO)₂Cl₂]. Transient absorption measurements revealed the population of a ³ILCT state for the Cu and Ag complexes (τ = 80 ns). All assignments were supported by TD-DFT calculations and resonance Raman spectroscopic measurements.

Recent advances in heteroleptic multiple-stranded metallosupramolecules

Well-ordered combination of defined coordination spheres and multiple types of ligands (heteroleptic) in a given structure can expand the structural complexity and functional diversity of the resulting metallosupramolecules. Such heteroleptic metallosupramolecular architectures are expected to afford advanced utility in a variety of applications. In this concise review article, recent advances in the development of multi-nuclear-cluster-based heteroleptic multiple-stranded (HLMS) metallosupramolecules are summarized and demonstrated. To construct HLMS metallosupramolecules, one type of multitopic ligands can be employed for building up multiple strands, while another type of ligands can be utilized to construct multi-nuclear clusters. Most HLMS metallosupramolecules adopt helical geometries and have high molecular symmetry, which can be key factors for the structural completion. HLMS metallosupramolecules can be used as basic building blocks for the fabrication of higher-order polymeric or discrete assembly architectures with well-defined geometries.

Multitasking with Chemical Fuel: Dissipative Formation of a Pseudorotaxane Rotor from Five Distinct Components

A 3-fold completive self-sorted library of dynamic motifs was integrated into the design of the pseudorotaxane-based rotor [Zn(2·H⁺)(3)(4)]²⁺ operating at k₂₉₈ = 15.4 kHz. The rotational motion in the five-component device is based on association/dissociation of the pyridyl head of the pseudorotaxane rotator arm between two zinc(II) porphyrin stations. Addition of TFA or 2-cyano-2-phenylpropanoic acid as a chemical fuel to a zinc release system and the loose rotor components 2-4 enabled the liberated zinc(II) ions and protons to act in unison, setting up the rotor through the formation of a heteroleptic zinc complex and a pseudorotaxane linkage. With chemical fuel, the dissipative system was reproducibly pulsed three times without a problem. Due to the double role of the fuel acid, two kinetically distinct processes played a role in both the out-of-equilibrium assembly and disassembly of the rotor, highlighting the complex issues in multitasking of chemical fuels.

A Switchable Catalyst Duo for Acyl Transfer Proximity Catalysis and Regulation of Substrate Selectivity

Enzymes are encoded with a gamut of information to catalyze a highly selective transformation by selecting the proper reactants from an intricate mixture of constituents. Mimicking biological machinery, two switchable catalysts with differently sized cavities and allosteric control are conceived that allow complementary size-selective acyl transfer in an on/off manner by modulating the effective local concentration of the substrates. Selective activation of one of two catalysts in a mixture of reactants of similar reactivity enabled upregulation of the desired product.

Allosteric binding of sodium deoxycholate by a bis(β-cyclodextrin)-2,2′-bipyridine receptor

The allosteric effect of a new bis(β-cyclodextrin) receptor amounts to a more than 18-fold increase of its binding affinity towards sodium deoxycholate upon addition of a zinc(ii) phenanthroline complex as an effector.

Supramolecular polymorphism in aggregates of a boron-difluoride complex of peri-naphthoindigo via solvent- and pathway-dependent self-assembly

A heterobimetallic tetrahedron from a linear platinum(II)-bis(acetylide) metalloligand

Employing 4-ethynylaniline as a simple organic ligand we were able to prepare the stable trans-bis(acetylide)platinum(II) complex [Pt(L1)2(PBu3)2] as a linear metalloligand. The reaction of this metalloligand with iron(II) cations and pyridine-2-carbaldehyde according to the subcomponent self-assembly approach yielded decanuclear heterobimetallic tetrahedron [Fe4Pt6(L2)12](OTf)8. Thus, combination of these two design concepts - the subcomponent self-assembly strategy and the complex-as-a-ligand approach - ensured a fast and easy synthesis of large heterobimetallic coordination cages of tetrahedral shape with a diameter of more than 3 nm as a mixture of all three possible T-, S 4- and C 3-symmetric diastereomers. The new complexes were characterized by NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry. Using GFN2-xTB we generated energy-minimized models of the diastereomers of this cage that further corroborated the results from analytical findings.

Conformational Regulation of Multivalent Terpyridine Ligands for Self-Assembly of Heteroleptic Metallo-Supramolecules

A two-ligand system composed of the predesigned multivalent and complementary terpyridine-based ligands was exploited to construct heteroleptic metallo-supramolecules and to investigate the self-assembly mechanism. Molecular stellation of the trimeric hexagon [Cd₆L²₃] gave rise to the exclusive self-assembly of the star hexagon [Cd₁₈L¹₆L³₃] through complementary ligand pairing between the ditopic and octatopic tectons. To understand how the intermolecular heteroleptic complexation influenced the self-assembly pathway, the star hexagon was truncated into two triangular fragments: [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁴₃] and [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁵₃]. In the self-assembly of [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁴₃], the conformational movements of hexatopic ligand L⁴ could be regulated by L¹ to promote the subsequent coordination event, which was the key step to the successful multicomponent self-assembly. In contrast, the formation of [Cd₁₂L¹₃L⁵₃] was hampered by the geometrically mismatched intermediates.

Bent 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands within Octahedral Complexes Constructed around a TiO4N2 Core

The synthesis of monomeric octahedral complexes constructed around a TiO₄N₂ core bearing neocuproine derivatives is detailed. These architectures follow the [Ti(1)₂(N-N)] general formulas, where 1 is the 6,6'-diphenyl-2,2'-biphenolato ligand and N-N is a 1,10-phenanthroline derivative. Single-crystal analysis revealed that the neocuproine-based ligands within these architectures adopt a nonplanar geometry. The distortion of these aromatic diimine systems has been quantified through measurement of a torsion angle (α) and a dihedral angle (β) defined by two planes within the aromatic diimine molecule (π₁ and π₂), permitting one to evaluate the twisting and bending of a coordinated nitrogen ligand, respectively. Next, the scope of this investigation was extended to the synthesis of a dimeric architecture, [Ti₂(1)₄(3)], where 3 is the 5,5'-bis(neocuproine) ligand. Again, a strong distortion of the neocuproine fragments was characterized in the crystalline state for such a complex. The UV-visible properties of these complexes were interpreted with the help of time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The solution behavior as well as good hydrolytic stability of these species has been established.

Photophysical Properties of Fluorescent 2-(Phenylamino)-1,10-phenanthroline Derivatives†

The present study details the experimental and theoretical characterization of the photophysical properties of 14 examples of 2-(phenylamino)-1,10-phenanthrolines (1). The absorption spectra of 1 are substituent-dependent but in a general manner present absorption bands at wavelengths of ~230; ~300; ~335 and a shoulder at ~380 nm. Electron-donating groups (EDG) and electron-withdrawing groups (EWG), respectively, result in bathochromic and hypsochromic shifts. Compounds 1 are highly luminescent, in contrast to phenanthroline, and emit in the region between 350 and 500 nm with substituent-dependent λ_max emission. The emission spectra show a redshift for EDG (4-OMe 62 nm; 4-Me 19 nm) and a blueshift for EWG (4-CN 41 nm; 4-CF₃ 38 nm) relative to the emission of the unsubstituted parent compound 1a. Plotting the λ max EM against Hammett σ+ constants gave an excellent linear correlation demonstrating the electron-deficient nature of the excited state and how the substituents (de)stabilize S₁ . Theoretical calculations revealed a HOMO-LUMO π-π* electronic transition to S₁ which in combination with difference (S₁ -S₀ ) in electron density maps revealed charge-transfer character. Strongly electron-withdrawing substituents switch off the charge transfer to give rise to a local excitation.

Multicomponent Metallo-Supramolecular Nanocapsules Assembled from Calix[4]resorcinarene-Based Terpyridine Ligands

Tetrafunctionalized calix[4]resorcinarene cavitands commonly serve as supramolecular scaffolds for construction of coordination-driven self-assembled capsules. However, due to the calix-like shape, the structural diversity of assemblies is mostly restricted to dimeric and hexameric capsules. Previously, we reported a spontaneous heteroleptic complexation strategy based on a pair of self-recognizable terpyridine-based ligands and Cd^II ions. Building on this complementary ligand pairing system, herein three types of nanocapsules, including a dimeric capsule, a Sierpiński triangular prism, and a cubic star, could be readily obtained through dynamic complexation reactions between a tetratopic cavitand-based ligand and various multitopic counterparts in the presence of Cd^II ions. The dimeric capsular assemblies display the spacer-length-dependent self-sorting behavior in a four-component system. Moreover, the precise multicomponent self-assembly of a Sierpiński triangular prism and a cubic star possessing three and six cavitand-based motifs, respectively, demonstrates that such self-assembly methodology is able to efficiently enhance architectural complexity for calix[4]resorcinarene-containing metallo-supramolecules.

Dynamic Complex-to-Complex Transformations of Heterobimetallic Systems Influence the Cage Structure or Spin State of Iron(II) Ions

Two new heterobimetallic cages, a trigonal‐bipyramidal and a cubic one, were assembled from the same mononuclear metalloligand by adopting the molecular library approach, using iron(II) and palladium(II) building blocks. The ligand system was designed to readily assemble through subcomponent self‐assembly. It allowed the introduction of steric strain at the iron(II) centres, which stabilizes its paramagnetic high‐spin state. This steric strain was utilized to drive dynamic complex‐to‐complex transformations with both the metalloligand and heterobimetallic cages. Addition of sterically less crowded subcomponents as a chemical stimulus transformed all complexes to their previously reported low‐spin analogues. The metalloligand and bipyramid incorporated the new building block more readily than the cubic cage, probably because the geometric structure of the sterically crowded metalloligand favours the cube formation. Furthermore it was possible to provoke structural transformations upon addition of more favourable chelating ligands, converting the cubic structures into bipyramidal ones.

Allosteric regulation of rotational, optical and catalytic properties within multicomponent machinery

Allosteric regulation of various functions within multicomponent machinery was triggered by the reversible transformation of nanorotors (k₂₉₈ = 44–61 kHz) to “dimeric” supramolecular structures (k₂₉₈ = 0.60 kHz) upon adding a stoichiometric chemical stimulus.

Selective and reversible interconversion of nanosliders commanded by remote control via metal-ion signaling

A multi-device network mainly consisting of two two-component nanosliders was formed by self-sorting of six components. Addition/removal of zinc(ii) ions reversibly reorganized the network by chemical signaling involving the translocation of copper(i) from a relay station followed by the selective disassembly/assembly of one of both multi-component devices. The thus liberated machine parts served to erect a three-component nanoslider alongside the other unchanged two-component nanoslider.

Conformational control of Pd2L4 assemblies with unsymmetrical ligands

With increasing interest in the potential utility of metallo-supramolecular architectures for applications as diverse as catalysis and drug delivery, the ability to develop more complex assemblies is keenly sought after. Despite this, symmetrical ligands have been utilised almost exclusively to simplify the self-assembly process as without a significant driving foa mixture of isomeric products will be obtained. Although a small number of unsymmetrical ligands have been shown to serendipitously form well-defined metallo-supramolecular assemblies, a more systematic study could provide generally applicable information to assist in the design of lower symmetry architectures. Pd2L4 cages are a popular class of metallo-supramolecular assembly; research seeking to introduce added complexity into their structure to further their functionality has resulted in a handful of examples of heteroleptic structures, whilst the use of unsymmetrical ligands remains underexplored. Herein we show that it is possible to design unsymmetrical ligands in which either steric or geometric constraints, or both, can be incorporated into ligand frameworks to ensure exclusive formation of single isomers of three-dimensional Pd2L4 metallo-supramolecular assemblies with high fidelity. In this manner it is possible to access Pd2L4 cage architectures of reduced symmetry, a concept that could allow for the controlled spatial segregation of different functionalities within these systems. The introduction of steric directing groups was also seen to have a profound effect on the cage structures, suggesting that simple ligand modifications could be used to engineer structural properties.

One-Pot Self-Assembly of Stellated Metallosupramolecules from Multivalent and Complementary Terpyridine-Based Ligands

A series of stellated metallosupramolecular architectures have been assembled through three-component integrative self-sorting. Building on the complementary ligand pairing, the initial attempts to synthesize the hexagram complex from a combination of X-shaped tetrakis- and V-shaped bis-terpyridine ligands, and Cd^II ions, resulted in an unprecedented mixture of stellated octanuclear and dodecanuclear metallocages, which were further isolated by column chromatography. To overcome the unexpected obstacle, the multivalent ligand design along with spontaneous heteroleptic complexation was applied to realization of the one-pot synthesis of the intricate topology. A centrally situated triangle served as a prop for quantitative formation of the six-pointed stellated complex. Notably, in the absence of the triangular prop, a four-pointed star was produced.

Three-state switching in a double-pole change-over nanoswitch controlled by redox-dependent self-sorting

The four-arm nanomechanical switch 1 with four different terminals exhibits two switching arms (contacts A and D) and two distinct stations for binding (contacts B and C). In switching State I, the azaterpyridine arm is intramolecularly coordinated to a zinc(ii) porphyrin station (connection A ↔ B) while contact D (a ferrocenylbipyridine unit) and contact C (phenanthroline) remain disconnected. After addition of copper(i) ions (State II) both connections A ↔ B and C ↔ D are established. Upon one-electron oxidation, double-pole change-over switching cleaves both connections A ↔ B & C ↔ D and establishes the new connection A ↔ C (State III). Fully reversible three-state switching (State I → State II → State III → State II → State I) was achieved by adding appropriate chemical and redox stimuli.

Mutualistic benefit in the self-sorted co-aggregates of peri-naphthoindigo and a 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide derivative

Photoluminescence enhancement for all the members of a self-sorted co-aggregate was observed for the first time by successfully amalgamating AIEE and social self-sorting. Intermolecular H-bonding and π-π stacking were utilised to prepare several co-aggregates of peri-naphthoindigo (PNI) and a 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide derivative dye, NH₂-NMI. In the heteromeric aggregates, photoluminescence intensities were increased by 28% for the imide and more than 400% for PNI. Due to spectral overlap between the emission of the imide and the absorption of PNI, energy transfer took place from the former to the latter. The heteromeric aggregates are dual emissive and the relative intensities of the emissions can easily be tuned by varying the stoichiometry of the dyes.

Palladium(II)-Based Self-Assembled Heteroleptic Coordination Architectures: A Growing Family

Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as L^a and L^b ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal; 2) [(PdL')_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is different; and 3) [Pd_m (L^a )_x (L^b )_y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of L^a and L^b is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.

Multifunctional mesoporous curcumin encapsulated iron-phenanthroline nanocluster: A new Anti-HIV agent

A new strategy to encapsulating the drug curcumin into the hydrophobic core of the iron-phenanthroline nanocomplex (NIP) and eventually its release is signified. NIP was prepared via coordinate interaction between Fe²⁺ and the lone pairs present on the N atoms of the bidentate phenanthroline ligand (spherical morphology, diameter 18.8 nm, mesoporous with pore size 2.443 nm, amorphous). Thereafter, curcumin was successfully encapsulated (NCIP) in NIP, resulting in its enhanced stability (spherical morphology, diameter 46.8 nm). The nanocomplex NIP was used for drug delivery applications. We evaluated the anti-HIV effects of NCIP in vitro on cultures of HIV infected human microglia. The treatment of HIV-1 infected microglia with NCIP significantly decreased the expression of HIV-p24 by 41% and pro-inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-8 and NO by 61.2%, 41% and 50.2%, respectively, compared to NIP. Flow cytometry data also support the decrease in TNF-α and IL-8 expression in case of NCIP. NCIP induced antioxidative effects by increasing the gene expression of catalase (CAT) and simulatenously decreasing hemeoxygenase-1 (HMOX-1) gene expression, thereby maintaining homeostasis which reduces neuroinflammation. These results support our premise that NCIP may be a significant adjuvant when used with traditional anti-retroviral regimens and may ameliorate HIV-1 associated neurotoxicity.

Donor-Site-Directed Rational Assembly of Heteroleptic cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ] Coordination Cages from Picolyl Ligands

A donor-site engineering approach facilitates the formation of heteroleptic [Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ cage structures through a favored cis-'in2 /out2 ' spatial configuration of the methyl groups of 5- and 3-substituted bis-monodentate picolyl ligands with flat acridone and bent phenothiazine backbones. The heteroleptic cages were confirmed by ESI-MS and 2D NMR experiments as well as DFT calculations, which pointed toward a cis-configuration being energetically favored. This was further supported by the synthesis and X-ray structure of a previously unreported cis-[Pd(2-picoline)4 ]2+ complex. The formation of homoleptic structures, however, was met with considerable steric hindrance at the PdII centers, as observed by the formation of [Pd2 L3 (solvent)2 ]4+ and [Pd2 L2 (solvent)4 ]4+ species when only one type of acridone-based ligand was offered. In contrast, bent phenothiazine ligands with outside-pointing methyl groups showed the ability to form interpenetrated double-cages, as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The general route presented herein enables the assembly of uniform cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ coordination cages, thus furthering the possibility to increase structural and functional complexity in supramolecular systems.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of discrete Ru6-Pt6 prismatic cages

The coordination-driven self-assembly of two new Ru6-Pt6 hexanuclear trigonal prismatic cages comprising arene-ruthenium(II) clips (1a(NO3)2 and 1b(NO3)2 ) and a tritopic platinum(II) metalloligand 2 has been performed in methanol at room temperature. The [3 + 2] hexanuclear cages 3a and 3b were isolated in good yields and characterized by well-known spectroscopic techniques including multinuclear NMR, mass spectrometry, UV-vis and infrared studies. Geometry optimization revealed the shapes and sizes of these hexanuclear prismatic cages. The combination of ruthenium and platinum metal center in a one-pot self-assembly reaction showcases the construction of aesthetically elegant heterometallic structures in supramolecular chemistry leading to the formation of a single major product.
