Excellent Adsorption of Lead (II) and Chromium (VI) from Water Using Zwitterions (-NH3+ and -COO-) Functionalized Nano Lanthanum Oxide: Kinetic, Isotherm, Thermodynamic, and Surface Mechanism

Zwitterion amino acid l-cysteine functionalized lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (l-Cyst-La2O3 NPs) have been synthesized for the first time with lanthanum acetate as the precursor, NH4OH as the base, and l-cysteine as the in situ functionalized mediator. The typical size of l-Cyst-La2O3 NPs was obtained in the range of 15-20 nm from the TEM technique. A cytotoxicity test of l-Cyst-La2O3 NPs was performed in Raw 264.7 cell lines, which were shown to be highly biocompatible. The point zero charge pH (pHPZC) of bare and l-Cyst functionalized La2O3 NPs was obtained at pH 6 and 2. The maximum uptake capacities of l-Cyst-La2O3 NPs at temperatures 25-45 °C were obtained as 137-282 mg/g for Pb2+ and 186-256 mg/g for Cr6+. All of these values are much higher than those reported in the literature with other nanomaterials. The presence of -SH, -NH2, and -COOH functional groups in zwitterion l-cysteine provides multiple binding sites leading to the high adsorption of Pb2+ and Cr6+. Five-cycle desorption studies were successfully performed to regenerate the spent l-Cyst-La2O3 NPs.

Nanostructured CuO Thin-Film-Based Conductometric Sensors for Real-Time Tracking of Sweat Loss

Enhanced sweat sensors lead to real-time, sustained, noninvasive tracking of sweat loss, ensure insight into individual health conditions at the molecular level, and have obtained prominent interest for their hopeful implementations in customized health tracking. Metal-oxide-based nanostructured electrochemical amperometric sensing materials are the best selection for continuous sweat monitoring devices owing to their high stability, high-sensing capacity, cost-effectiveness, miniaturization, and wide applicability. In this research, CuO thin films have been fabricated by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction technique (SILAR) with and without the addition of Lawsonia inermis L. (Henna, (LiL)) leaf extract (C₁₀H₆O₃, 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) with a high-sensitive and rapid response for sweat solution. Despite the pristine film being responsive to the 65.50 mM sweat solution (S = 2.66), the response characteristic improves to 3.95 for the 1.0% LiL-implemented CuO film. Unmodified, 1.0% LiL and 3.0% LiL-substituted thin-film materials assure considerable linearity with linear regression ranges, R², of 0.989, 0.997, and 0.998, respectively. It is noteworthy here that this research aims to determine an enhanced system that could potentially be implemented in real-life sweat-tracking administrations. Real-time sweat loss tracking capabilities of CuO samples was found to be promising. Derived from these outcomes, we concluded that the fabricated nanostructured CuO-based sensing system is a useful application for the continuous observation of sweat loss as a biological argument and compatibility with other microelectronic technologies.

Enhanced nitrate and cadmium removal performance at low carbon to nitrogen ratio through immobilized redox mediator granules and functional strains in a bioreactor

The coexistence of multiple pollutants and lack of carbon sources are challenges for the biological treatment of wastewater. To achieve simultaneous removal of nitrate (NO₃^--N) and cadmium (Cd²⁺) at low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios, 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ) was selected from three redox mediators as an accelerator for denitrification of heterotrophic strain Pseudomonas stutzeri sp. GF2 and autotrophic strain Zoogloea sp. FY6. Then, halloysite nanotubes immobilized with 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNTs-HNQ) were prepared and a bioreactor was constructed with immobilized redox mediator granules (IRMG) as the carrier, which was immobilized with HNTs-HNQ and inoculated with the two strains. The immobilized HNQ and the inoculated strains jointly improved the removal ability of NO₃^--N and Cd²⁺ and the removal efficiency of NO₃^--N (25.0 mg L^-1) and Cd²⁺ (5.0 mg L^-1) were 92.81% and 93.94% at C/N = 1.5 and hydraulic retention time (HRT) = 4 h. The Cd²⁺ was removed by adsorption of iron oxides (FeO(OH) and Fe₃O₄) and IRMG. The electron transport system activity (ETSA) of bacteria was improved and the composition of dissolved organic matter in the effluent was not affected by HNQ. The HNQ promoted the production of FeO(OH) and up-regulated the proportion of Zoogloea (54.75% in the microbial community), indicating that Zoogloea sp. FY6 was dominant in the microbial community. In addition, HNQ influenced the metabolic pathways and improved the relative abundance of some genes involved in nitrogen metabolism and the iron redox cycle.

Hybrid Metal Oxide/Biochar Materials for Wastewater Treatment Technology: A Review

This paper discusses the properties of metal oxide/biochar systems for use in wastewater treatment. Titanium, zinc, and iron compounds are most often combined with biochar; therefore, combinations of their oxides with biochar are the focus of this review. The first part of this paper presents the most important information about biochar, including its advantages, disadvantages, and possible modification, emphasizing the incorporation of inorganic oxides into its structure. In the next four sections, systems of biochar combined with TiO₂, ZnO, Fe₃O₄, and other metal oxides are discussed in detail. In the next to last section probable degradation mechanisms are discussed. Literature studies revealed that the dispersion of a metal oxide in a carbonaceous matrix causes the creation or enhancement of surface properties and catalytic or, in some cases, magnetic activity. Addition of metallic species into biochars increases their weight, facilitating their separation by enabling the sedimentation process and thus facilitating the recovery of the materials from the water medium after the purification process. Therefore, materials based on the combination of inorganic oxide and biochar reveal a wide range of possibilities for environmental applications in aquatic media purification.

In vitro cytocompatibility assessment and antibacterial effects of quercetin encapsulated alginate/chitosan nanoparticle

The present work aims at evaluating the in vitro biocompatibility, antibacterial activity and antioxidant capacity of the fabricated and optimized Alginate/Chitosan nanoparticles (ALG/CSNPs) and quercetin loaded Alginate/Chitosan nanoparticles (Q-ALG/CSNPs) with an improved biological efficacy on the hydrophobic flavonoid.The physicochemical properties were determined by TEM and FTIR analysis. The nanoparticles evaluated for the encapsulation of quercetin exerted % encapsulation efficiency (EE) that varied between 76 and 82.4 % and loading capacity (LC) from 31 to 46.5 %. Potential cytotoxicity of the ALG/CSNPs and Q-ALG/CSNPs upon L929 fibroblast cell line was evaluated by MTT reduction Assay and expressed as % cell viability. The in vitro antibacterial property was studied by well diffusion method against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25925) and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (ATCC 25923). The inhibitory efficacy by scavenging free radical intermediates was evaluated by 1,1, diphenyl 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity showed biocompatibility towards L929 cells. Quercetin loaded Alginate/Chitosan nanoparticles inhibited the growth of microorganisms than pure quercetin. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging results have shown a high level of antioxidant property for encapsulated Quercetin in Alginate/Chitosan nanoparticles compared to free Quercetin. The findings of our study suggest that the developed ALG/CSNPs and Q-ALG/CSNPs possess the prerequisites and be proposed as a suitable system for delivering quercetin with enhanced therapeutic effectuality.

Adsorption and Photo-Fenton Degradation of Methylene Blue Using Nanomagnetite/Potassium Carrageenan Bio-Composite Beads

The present study deals with the preparation of nanomagnetite (NM), potassium carrageenan (KC), and nanomagnetite/potassium carrageenan bio-composite beads (NC). Characterization of the prepared solid materials using different physicochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-disperse X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (DRS), swelling ratio (SR%), N2 adsorption, pH of point of zero charges (pHPZC), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Comparing between adsorption and photo-Fenton degradation process for methylene blue (MB) on the surface of the prepared solid materials. Nanomagnetite/potassium carrageenan bio-composite (NC) exhibited high specific surface area (406 m2/g), mesoporosity (pore radius, 3.64 nm), point of zero charge around pH6.0, and the occurrence of abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Comparison between adsorption and photo-Fenton oxidation process for methylene blue (MB) was carried out under different application conditions. NC exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity with 374.50 mg/g at 40 °C after 24 h of shaking time while 96.9% of MB was completely degraded after 20 min of photo-Fenton process. Langmuir's adsorption model for MB onto the investigated solid materials is the best-fitted adsorption model based on the higher correlation coefficient values (0.9771–0.9999). Kinetic and thermodynamic measurements prove that adsorption follows PSO, endothermic, and spontaneous process, while photo-Fenton degradation of MB achieves PFO, nonspontaneous, and endothermic process. Photo-Fenton degradation is a fast and simple technique at a lower concentration of dye (< 40 mg/L) while at higher dye concentration, the adsorption process is preferred in the removal of that dye.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Fe3O4/PVA/Eggshell Hybrid Nanocomposite for Photodegradation and Antibacterial Activity

In the 21st century, hybrid nanocomposites were widely used in bioelectronic, biosensing, photocatalytic, and biomedical applications. In the present study, we fabricated a novel Fe3O4/PVA/Eggshell hybrid nanocomposite and physicochemically characterized it using powder XRD, EDS, FTIR, VSM, and HR-TEM analysis. The XRD spectrum revealed the crystalline and FCC configuration of Fe3O4 NPs with average crystal size of 16.28 nm, and the HRTEM image indicates the prepared hybrid nanocomposite is of spherical shape with less agglomeration. This hybrid nanocomposite showed a significant photodegradation property in degrading organic pollutants such as congo red and crystal violet dyes under the sunlight irradiation. In addition, the hybrid nanocomposite also displayed a potent antibacterial property against different Gram +ve and Gram −ve bacterial pathogens. This study provides a significant example in the overview of fabrication of cost effectively, eco-friendly, and multiple-application hybrid nanocomposites through eggshell membrane fibers.

Determination of Phthalate Esters in Cosmetics and Baby Care Products by a Biosorbent Based on Lawsone Capped Chitosan and Followed by Liquid Chromatography

This research presents a green synthetic pathway for the preparation of a new biosorbent and eco-friendly extraction process of three phthalate esters: dimethyl phthalate, di-butyl phthalate and benzyl butyl phthalate, from cosmetics and baby care products. Dispersive solid-phase extraction was used based on a new core-shell biomass/sorbent; chitosan-loaded lawsone. The proposed method provides fortunate trapping of phthalate esters in a one-step extraction. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the current work was presented low detection limits (0.03-0.15 ng. g-1), limits of quantification (0.1-0.5 ng·g-1) and reasonable linearity (0.1-10 000 ng. g-1). The applicability of the method was estimated by recovery experiments at different spiking levels (n = 5) for phthalate esters in the real samples.

Drastically inhibited nZVI-Fenton oxidation of organic pollutants by cysteine: Multiple roles in the nZVI/O2/hv system

The influence of l-cysteine, a common aliphatic amino acid, on the zero-valent iron (nZVI)/O₂ photo-Fenten degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) was investigated in this study. The oxidation rate of RhB in the nZVI/O₂/hv system was 91.2% after 40 min under the illumination and oxygen conditions and pH of 3, but when cysteine was introduced into the system, the oxidization process was inhibited. The removal of RhB was only about 50% after 40 min at a cysteine concentration ≥50 μM. It was shown experimentally that, under dark conditions, only 40.5% and 19.8% RhB was removed by the nZVI/O₂ and nZVI/O₂/cysteine systems, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and iron dissolving experiments revealed that the addition of cysteine clearly reduced the production of hydroxyl radicals (OH) and Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated that cysteine could form hydrogen bonds on the iron surface. These results indicated that the main inhibition mechanism of cysteine was the alleviation of the oxidation of nZVI to Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ through wrapping the nZVI particles. Moreover, cystine (the oxidized form of CYS) could partly react with OH to regenerate cysteine, which resulted in competition with RhB for OH. Another possible reason for the inhibitory effect of cysteine was the prevention of light utilization. These findings indicate a non-negligible inhibitory trait for heterogeneous Fenton process in wastewater treatment when amino acids are present.

In this research, a facile, two-step synthesis of Fe₃O₄–L_Cysteine–graphene quantum dots (GQDs) nanocomposite is reported. This synthesis method comprises the preparation of GQDs via hydrothermal route, which should be conjugated to the L_Cysteine functionalized core–shell magnetic structure with the core of about 7.5-nm iron oxide nanoparticle and 3.5-nm L_Cysteine shell. L_Cysteine, as a biocompatible natural amino acid, was used to link magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) with GQDs. X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray were used to investigate the presence and formation of MNPs, \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\text{L}}_{{{\text{Cysteine}}}}$$\end{document}LCysteine functionalized MNPs, and final hybrid nanostructure. Morphology and size distribution of nanoparticles were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Finally, the magnetic and optical properties of the prepared nanocomposite were measured by vibrating sample magnetometer, ultraviolet–visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results show that Fe₃O₄–L_Cysteine–GQDs nanocomposite exhibits a superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature with high saturation magnetization and low magnetic coercivity, which are 28.99 emu/g and 0.09 Oe, respectively. This nanocomposite also shows strong and stable emission at 460 nm and 530 nm when it is excited with the 235 nm wavelength. The magnetic GQDs structure also reveals the absorption wavelength at 270 nm. Therefore, Fe₃O₄–L_Cysteine–GQDs nanocomposite can be considered as a potential multifunctional hybrid structure with magnetic and optical properties simultaneously. This nanocomposite can be used for a wide range of biomedical applications like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents, biosensors, photothermal therapy, and hyperthermia.

Methylene blue-covered superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles combined with red light as a novel platform to fight non-local bacterial infections: A proof of concept study against Escherichia coli

Currently, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) is limited to the local treatment of topical infections, and a platform that can deliver the photosensitizer to internal organs is highly desirable for non-local ones; SPIONs can be promising vehicles for the photosensitizer. This work reports an innovative application of methylene blue (MB)-superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). We report on the preparation, characterization, and application of MB-SPIONs for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. When exposed to light, the MB photosensitizer generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause irreversible damage in microbial cells. We prepare SPIONs by the co-precipitation method. We cover the nanoparticles with a double silica layer - tetraethyl orthosilicate and sodium silicate - leading to the hybrid material magnetite-silica-MB. We characterize the as-prepared SPIONs by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and magnetic measurements. We confirm the formation of magnetite using powder X-ray diffraction data. We use the Rietveld method to calculate the average crystallite size of magnetite as being 14 nm. Infrared spectra show characteristic bands of iron‑oxygen as well as others associated with silicate groups. At room temperature, the nanocomposites present magnetic behavior due to the magnetite core. Besides, magnetite-silica-MB can promote ROS formation. Thus, we evaluate the photodynamic activity of Fe₃O₄-silica-MB on Escherichia coli. Our results show the bacteria are completely eradicated following photodynamic treatment depending on the MB release time from SPIONs and energy dose. These findings encourage us to explore the use of magnetite-silica-MB to fight internal infections in preclinical assays.

Adsorption of ibuprofen using cysteine-modified silane-coated magnetic nanomaterial

Industrialization and growth of the pharmaceutical companies have been a boon to the mankind in our day to day life in myriad ways. However, due to the uninhibited release of these active pharmaceutical compounds into the water systems has caused detrimental effects to the genetic pool. In this study, L-cysteine-modified 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane-coated magnetic nanomaterial showed a maximum removal of the efficiency of 82.90% for the nanomaterial dosage of 30 mg at an initial concentration of 50 mg L^-1 at pH 6.0. Further, the nanomaterial showed reusability efficiency up to 80% for three cycles. The adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order reaction and the adsorption isotherm model best fits the Langmuir isotherm proving the adsorption process to be a monolayer sorption on a monolayer surface. This magnetic nanomaterial could serve as a promising tool for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous solutions. Graphical abstract ᅟ.

Antibacterial magnetic nanoparticles for therapeutics: a review

Along with the extensive range of exotic nanoparticle (NPs) applications, investigation of magnetic NPs (MNPs) in vitro has ushered modern antibacterial studies into an increasingly attractive research area. A great number of microorganisms exist in the size scales from nanometre to micrometre regions. The enormous potential of engineered MNPs in therapeutic procedures against various drug-resistant bacteria has declined the menace of fatal bacterial infections. Many biocompatible MNPs have been introduced that possess remarkable impacts on various bacterial strains. Conventional synthesis methods such as co-precipitation or hydrothermal techniques have been widely adopted in the production of MNPs. The MNPs for antibacterial applications are mainly required to be superparamagnetic, recyclable and biocompatible. To implement novel strategies in developing new generation antimicrobial magnetic nanomaterials, it is essential to obtain a comprehensive preview of recent achievements in synthesis, proposed antibacterial mechanisms and characterisation techniques of these nanomaterials. This review highlights notable aspects of antibacterial activity in engineered MNPs and nanocomposites including their particle properties (size, shape and saturation magnetisation), antibacterial mechanisms, synthesis methods, testing methods, surface modifications and minimum inhibitory concentrations.

Functionalized hollow MnFe2O4 nanospheres: design, applications and mechanism for efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions

A l-cysteine functionalized magnetic hollow MnFe₂O₄ nanosphere material has been synthesised, with high magnetism, large interior cavities, and high porosity and surface activity. It has high adsorption efficiency and regenerated adsorption capacity for the removal of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ in contaminated water.

Hydrophobic Forces Are Relevant to Bacteria-Nanoparticle Interactions: Pseudomonas putida Capture Efficiency by Using Arginine, Cysteine or Oxalate Wrapped Magnetic Nanoparticles

Size, shape and surface characteristics strongly affect interfacial interactions, as the presented among iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) aqueous colloids and bacteria. In other to find the forces among this interaction, we compare three types of surface modified NPs (exposing oxalate, arginine or cysteine residues), based on a simple synthesis and derivation procedure, that allows us to obtain very similar NPs (size and shape of the magnetic core). In this way, we assure that the main difference in the synthesized NPs are the oxalate or amino acid residue exposed, an ideal situation to compare their bacterial capture performance, and so too the interactions among them. Field emission scanning electron microscopy showed homogeneous distribution of particle sizes for all systems synthesized, close to 10 nm. Magnetization, zeta potential, Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry and other studies allow us further characterization. Capture experiments of Pseudomonas putida bacterial strain showed a high level of efficiency, independently of the amino acid used to wrap the NP, when compared with oxalate. We show that bacterial capture efficiency cannot be related mostly to the bacterial and NP superficial charge relationship (as determined by z potential), but instead capture can be correlated with hydrophobic and hydrophilic forces among them.

Lead and Chromium Adsorption from Water using L-Cysteine Functionalized Magnetite (Fe3O4) Nanoparticles

L-Cysteine functionalized magnetite nanoparticles (L-Cyst-Fe3O4 NPs) were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation using Fe2+ and Fe3+ as iron precursors, sodium hydroxide as a base and L-Cysteine as functionalized agent. The structural and morphological studies were carried out using X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectrophotometric techniques. The zeta potential of bare Fe3O4 and functionalized L-Cyst-Fe3O4 NPs were +28 mV and -30.2 mV (pH 7.0), respectively. The positive surface charge changes to negative imply the presence of L-Cyst monolayer at particle interface. Band gap energy of 2.12 eV [bare Fe3O4NPs] and 1.4 eV [L-Cyst-Fe3O4 NPs] were obtained. Lead and chromium removal were investigated at different initial pHs, contact time, temperatures and adsorbate-adsorbent concentrations. Maximum Cr6+ and Pb2+ removal occurred at pH 2.0 and 6.0, respectively. Sorption dynamics data were best described by pseudo-second order rate equation. Pb2+ and Cr6+ sorption equilibrium data were best fitted to Langmuir equation. Langmuir adsorption capacities of 18.8 mg/g (Pb2+) and 34.5 mg/g (Cr6+) at 45 °C were obtained. Regeneration of exhausted L-Cyst-Fe3O4 NPs and recovery of Pb2+/Cr6+ were demonstrated using 0.01 M HNO3 and NaOH. L-Cyst-Fe3O4 NPs stability and reusability were also demonstrated.

Green synthesis of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles using Couroupita guianensis Aubl. fruit extract for their antibacterial and cytotoxicity activities

In the present study, a sustainable green chemistry approach was established to fabricate magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄NPs) using the aqueous fruit extract of edible C. guianensis (CGFE). Synthesized NPs were further confirmed with different high-throughput characterization techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR, XPS, DLS and zeta potential analysis. Additionally, XRD, AFM, HRTEM and SQUID VSM demonstrate the generation of crystalline CGFe₃O₄NPs with mean diameter of 17 ± 10 nm. Interestingly, CGFe₃O₄NPs exhibit a stupendous bactericidal action against different human pathogens which depicts its antimicrobial value. A significant dose-dependent cytotoxic effect of CGFe₃O₄NPs was noticed against treated human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2).
