Abstract
This work reports a method for the catalytic synthesis of C(3) SCF3-substituted pyrrolidinindoline using a small-ring organophosphorus-based catalyst and a hydrosilane reductant, with trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride as the electrophilic SCF3 reagent. This method can drive the conversion of tryptamine to the C(3) SCF3-substituted pyrrolidine indoline. The readily available, inexpensive trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride could be activated as an electrophilic SCF3 source by PIII/PV redox catalysis and could efficiently participate in the reaction of tryptamines, thus providing various substituted C(3) SCF3-substituted pyrrolidinoindoline in moderate to excellent yields. This presented strategy features a broad substrate scope, and the structure has value for in-depth research.

Abstract
The ring-reorganizing transformations of activated cyclopropanes are typically achieved under acidic conditions. This Letter describes the first acid-free and Lewis base-mediated cascade ring opening/recyclization of designed cyclopropyl ketones to access tetrahydrofluorenones. We rationally merged the nucleophilic features of phosphines with the electronically biased cyclopropanes to synthesize several new classes of hydrofluorenones. We have also demonstrated the synthetic utility of the products in accessing highly functionalized molecular scaffolds.

Abstract
A new phosphine-catalyzed reaction of α-substituted allenes with aryl imines, in stark contrast to classic cycloaddition reactions, has been developed. This reaction delivers valuable highly functionalized itaconimides with excellent stereoselectivities by a new «un-cyclizing» reaction mode involving β'-carbon of α-substituted allenes. Moreover, the present «un-cyclizing» reaction can also be carried out in a one-pot fashion and scaled up to the gram scale by using aryl aldehydes, without the need to isolate the aryl imines. Mechanistic studies and control experiments reveal the crucial role of H2 CO3 for the present reaction mode. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the possible mechanism.

Abstract
Catalysis by trivalent nucleophilic organophosphines has emerged as an essential tool in organic synthesis. Several new organic transformations promoted by phosphines substantiate and complement the existing synthetic chemistry tools. Mere design of the substrate and reagent combinations has introduced new modes of reactivity patterns, which are otherwise difficult to achieve. These design considerations have led to the rapid build-up of complex molecular entities and laid a solid foundation to synthesise bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals. This article presents an overview of some of the conceptual advances, including our contributions to nucleophilic organophosphine chemistry. The scope, limitations, mechanistic insights, and applications of these metal-free transformations are discussed elaborately.

Abstract
ConspectusHypervalent iodine reagents find application as selective chemical oxidants in a diverse array of oxidative transformations. The utility of these reagents is often ascribed to (1) the proclivity to engage being selective two-electron redox transformations; (2) facile ligand exchange at the three-centered, four-electron (3c-4e) hypervalent iodine-ligand (I-X) bonds; and (3) the hypernucleofugacity of aryl iodides. One-electron redox and iodine radical chemistry is well-precedented in the context of inorganic hypervalent iodine chemistry─for example, in the iodide-triiodide couple that drives dye-sensitized solar cells. In contrast, organic hypervalent iodine chemistry has historically been dominated by the two-electron I(I)/I(III) and I(III)/I(V) redox couples, which results from intrinsic instability of the intervening odd-electron species. Transient iodanyl radicals (i.e., formally I(II) species), generated by reductive activation of hypervalent I-X bonds, have recently gained attention as potential intermediates in hypervalent iodine chemistry. Importantly, these open-shell intermediates are typically generated by activation of stoichiometric hypervalent iodine reagents, and the role of the iodanyl radical in substrate functionalization and catalysis is largely unknown. Our group has been interested in advancing the chemistry of iodanyl radicals as intermediates in the sustainable synthesis of hypervalent I(III) and I(V) compounds and as novel platforms for substrate activation at open-shell main-group intermediates. In 2018, we disclosed the first example of aerobic hypervalent iodine catalysis by intercepting reactive intermediates in aldehyde autoxidation chemistry. While we initially hypothesized that the observed oxidation was accomplished by aerobically generated peracids via a two-electron I(I)-to-I(III) oxidation reaction, detailed mechanistic studies revealed the critical role of acetate-stabilized iodanyl radical intermediates. We subsequently leveraged these mechanistic insights to develop hypervalent iodine electrocatalysis. Our studies resulted in the identification of new catalyst design principles that give rise to highly efficient organoiodide electrocatalysts that operate at modest applied potentials. These advances addressed classical challenges in hypervalent iodine electrocatalysis related to the need for high applied potentials and high catalyst loadings. In some cases, we were able to isolate the anodically generated iodanyl radical intermediates, which allowed direct interrogation of the elementary chemical reactions characteristic of iodanyl radicals. Both substrate activation via bidirectional proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions at I(II) intermediates and disproportionation reactions of I(II) species to generate I(III) compounds have been experimentally validated. This Account discusses the emerging synthetic and catalytic chemistry of iodanyl radicals. Results from our group have demonstrated that these open-shell species can play a critical role in sustainable synthesis of hypervalent iodine reagents and play a heretofore unappreciated role in catalysis. Realization of I(I)/I(II) catalytic cycles as a mechanistic alternative to canonical two-electron iodine redox chemistry promises to open new avenues to application of organoiodides in catalysis.

Abstract
A green method to construct C-S bonds using sulfonyl chlorides and alcohols/acids via a PIII/PV═O catalytic system is reported. The organophosphorus-catalyzed umpolung reaction promotes us to propose the "dual-substrate deoxygenation" strategy. Herein, we adopt the "dual-substrate deoxygenation" strategy, which achieves the deoxygenation of sulfonyl chlorides and alcohols/acids to synthesize thioethers/thioesters driven by PIII/PV═O redox cycling. The catalytic method represents an operationally simple approach using stable phosphine oxide as a precatalyst and shows broad functional group tolerance. The potential application of this protocol is demonstrated by the late-stage diversification of drug analogues.

Abstract
3-Hydroxyquinoline-4(1H)-ones (3HQs) are privileged structural motifs. The current methods for their synthesis necessitate strongly acidic or basic conditions, which hamper the generality and practicality. Here, we describe phosphine-mediated redox transformation of easily accessible 1-(2-nitroaryl)prop-2-ynones to 3HQs. Besides establishing a new entry to the synthesis of 3HQs under neutral conditions, this method is the first formal intramolecular oxyamination of α,β-ynones. The synthetic utility of this method is demonstrated in the total synthesis of japonine, its analogs, and rare quinoline derivatives.

Abstract
An efficient and practical phosphine-catalyzed homo-coupling reaction of benzyl chlorides is described. The reactions proceed smoothly in the presence of CsF/B(OMe)3 and NaH as the base, respectively, to provide trans-stilbenes in good yields with a broad scope. Unsymmetrical stilbenes are also generated from the reactions of benzyl chlorides with phosphonium salts. Several P-based key intermediates have been detected by NMR and HRMS analyses, which shed light on the postulated catalytic cycle. In the presence of different bases, the transformations involve two different pathways, in which phenylcarbene and phosphonium alkoxide are considered as key intermediates, respectively. The two pathways are complementary in synthesis but different in mechanisms. The synthetic utility, including gram-scale reactions and straightforward access to π-conjugated molecules, has been demonstrated as well.

This Minireview provides insight into the early history of nucleophilic phosphinocatalysis. The concepts of 1,4-addition of a tertiary phosphine to an α,β-enone and of equilibrium between the resulting phosphonium zwitterion and phosphonium ylide established a fundamental basis for the development of several classical transformations, including the Rauhut-Currier, Morita, McClure-Baizer-Anderson, and Oda reactions.

Abstract
We report herein an unprecedented combination of light and P(III)/P(V) redox cycling for the efficient deoxygenation of aromatic amine N-oxides. Moreover, we discovered that a large variety of aliphatic amine N-oxides can easily be deoxygenated by using only phenylsilane. These practically simple approaches proceed well under metal-free conditions, tolerate many functionalities and are highly chemoselective. Combined experimental and computational studies enabled a deep understanding of factors controlling the reactivity of both aromatic and aliphatic amine N-oxides.

Abstract
Bulky phosphines and their redox properties have received increased attention in the view of useful auxiliary ligands for transition metal catalysts and Lewis-base components of frustrated Lewis pairs for chemical transformations. Herein we report the synthesis, structure, and properties of a series of trialkylphosphines 2R (R = methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl, 1-adamantyl) that possess the bulky 2,2,5,5-tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)-1-phosphacyclopentane as a structural backbone. Among these phosphines, 2Ad, which contains an adamantyl moiety, has a very large buried volume (%Vbur) for a trialkylphosphine (62.0) and shows a quasi-reversible oxidative wave at a lower oxidation potential (-0.12 V in CH2Cl2, vs ferrocene/ferrocenium couple) by cyclic voltammetry. The reaction of 2Ad with AgPF6 afforded a cationic silver aquo complex [Ag(2Ad)(H2O)]+[PF6]-, whereas the reaction with NOSbF6 gave a persistent phosphine radical cation [2Ad]•+. Based on the EPR spectra and DFT studies, the spin and positive charge of [2Ad]•+ are localized on the phosphorus atom.

Abstract
We have developed a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) annulative rearrangement for the preparation of 3-pyrrolines from allenylic carbamates via phosphonium diene intermediates. We employed this methodology to synthesize an array of 1,3-disubstituted- and 1,2,3-trisubstituted-3-pyrrolines, including the often difficult to prepare 2-alkyl variants. A mechanistic investigation employing allenylic acetates and mononucleophiles unexpectedly unveiled that a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) reaction for the construction of cyclopentene products, previously reported by Tong, might not occur through a phosphonium diene, as had been proposed, but rather through multiple mechanisms working in concert. Consequently, our phosphine-catalyzed rearrangement is most likely the first transformation to involve the unequivocal formation of a phosphonium diene intermediate along the reaction pathway. To demonstrate the synthetic utility of this newly developed reaction, we have completed concise formal syntheses of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids (±)-trachelanthamidine and (±)-supinidine.

Abstract
The reactivity of allylic phosphorus ylides generated in situ from alkoxycarbonylmethylenephosphoranes and propiolates is investigated toward isocyanates and aromatic aldehydes, which leads to one-pot multicomponent benzannulations for efficient synthesis of polysubstituted anilines and biaryls, respectively. The mechanism may involve a tandem [2+2] cycloaddition/fragmentation/Wittig/cyclization/elimination/aromatization sequence.

Abstract
A three-component reaction between one molecule of phosphorus ylides (P-ylides) and two molecules of isocyanates for the rapid assembly of 2-amino-3-carboxylate-4-quinolones is described. The mechanism may involve the addition of a P-ylide to an isocyanate followed by 1,3-H shift to form a carbamoyl stabilized P-ylide. The intermediate then reacts with another aryl isocyanate via Wittig/ketenimine-ketene rearrangement/6π-electrocyclization/1,3-H shift to finally afford the 4-quinolones.

Abstract
Electron-rich tertiary phosphines are valuable species in chemical synthesis. However, their broad application as ligands in catalysis and reagents in stoichiometric reactions is often limited by their costly synthesis. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of a series of phosphines with 1-alkylpyridin-4-ylidenamino and 1-alkylpyridin-2-ylidenamino substituents that are accessible in a very short and scalable route starting from commercially available aminopyridines and chlorophosphines. The determination of the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) value reveals that the electron donor ability can be tuned by the substituent pattern at the aminopyridine backbone and it can exceed that of common alkylphosphines and N-heterocyclic carbenes. The potential of the new phosphines as strong nucleophiles in phosphine-mediated transformations is demonstrated by the formation of Lewis base adducts with CO2 and CS2 . In addition, the coordination chemistry of the new phosphines towards CuI , AuI , and PdII metal centers has been explored, and a convenient procedure to introduce the most basic phosphine into metal complexes starting from air-stable phosphonium salt is described.

Abstract
The P-heterocyclic field forms a special part of organophosphorus chemistry,
and is a special discipline within heterocyclic chemistry. The relevant results accumulated
in the group of the author of this minireview in last 5 years are summarized. After
surveying the conformational situation of cyclic phosphinates, their Microwave
(MW)-assisted direct esterification and the T3P®-promoted esterification are discussed.
The next chapters describe newer results regarding the interpretation and modelling of the
rate enhancing effect of MWs, and on an important, but somewhat neglected field, the
hydrolysis of phosphinates. New results on the ring enlargement of 5-membered
unsaturated P-heterocycles to 6-ring species, as well as on the synthesis of
7-phosphanorbornene derivatives, and their refunctionalization are also included. Novel
findings on the preparation of cyclic amides and imides are also explored. Last but not least, the user-friendly
deoxygenations of cyclic phosphine oxides elaborated by us are shown. The reader will be able to discover
green chemical considerations and accomplishments throughout the series of organophosphorus
transformations reviewed.

Abstract
A novel phosphine-catalyzed intermolecular cyclization between 2-sulfonamidobenzaldehyes and ynones is reported. This methodology serves as a conduit for the construction of benzo[ b]azepin-3-ones in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. The resulting 2-benzylidene moieties are formed exclusively in the E-configuration. Mechanistically, this unusual annulation occurs through a phosphine-catalyzed α-umpolung addition, followed by an aldol reaction. One of the benzo[ b]azepin-3-one products was converted to the core structure of 3-amino-[ a]benzazepin-2-one-1-alkanoic acids, many of which function as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.

Abstract
A method for the preparation of aryl- and heteroarylamine products by triethylphosphine-mediated deoxygenative coupling of nitroarenes and boronic acids is reported. This method provides access to an array of functionalized (hetero)arylamine products from readily available starting materials under the action of an inexpensive commercial reagent. The developed triethylphosphine-mediated transformation highlights the capability of organophosphorus compounds to carry out this useful deoxygenative transformation without the necessity of any transition metal additives.

Abstract
Traditionally, the reductive aldol reaction is a metal-catalyzed and hydride-promoted coupling between enones and aldehydes. We present a phosphine-mediated diastereoselective intramolecular reductive aldol reaction of α-substituted dienones and aldehydes, which is metal-free and hydride-free. The synthetic utility of the reductive aldol adducts is demonstrated by elaborating them in one step to indeno[1,2- b]furanones, indeno[1,2- b]pyrans, and dibenzo[ a, h]azulen-8-ones.

Abstract
The hallmark of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis is the initial nucleophilic addition of a phosphine to an electrophilic starting material, producing a reactive zwitterionic intermediate, generally under mild conditions. In this Review, we classify nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions in terms of their electrophilic components. In the majority of cases, these electrophiles possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds: alkenes (section 2), allenes (section 3), alkynes (section 4), and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohol derivatives (MBHADs; section 5). Within each of these sections, the reactions are compiled based on the nature of the second starting material-nucleophiles, dinucleophiles, electrophiles, and electrophile-nucleophiles. Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions that occur via the initial addition to starting materials that do not possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds are collated in section 6. Although not catalytic in the phosphine, the formation of ylides through the nucleophilic addition of phosphines to carbon-carbon multiple bond-containing compounds is intimately related to the catalysis and is discussed in section 7. Finally, section 8 compiles miscellaneous topics, including annulations of the Hüisgen zwitterion, phosphine-mediated reductions, iminophosphorane organocatalysis, and catalytic variants of classical phosphine oxide-generating reactions.

Abstract
Unprecedented PPh3-mediated [4 + 2]- and [4 + 1]-annulation of maleimides with in situ formed azoalkenes have been successfully developed, affording fused tetrahydropyridazine/pyrrolidinedione and spiro-dihydropyrazole/pyrrolidinedione derivatives in good yields under mild reaction conditions. Maleimides serve as C2 synthons in the [4 + 2]-annulation using 1,2-dichloroethane as the solvent in the presence of 20 mol % of PPh3. With a stoichiometric amount of PPh3 in acetone, maleimides serve as C1 synthons, and the in situ formed phosphorus ylide is the key intermediate to realize this [4 + 1]-annulation.
