Development of a low-cost photocatalytic aerogel based on cellulose, carbon nanotubes, and TiO2 nanoparticles for the degradation of organic dyes

A hybrid ultra-light and porous cellulose aerogel was prepared by extracting cellulose fibers from white paper, alkali/urea as a crosslinker agent, and functionalized with CNTs and pure anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. Since CNTs work as mechanical reinforcement for aerogels, physical and mechanical properties were measured. Besides, since TiO2 acts as a photocatalyst for degrading dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue), UV-Vis spectroscopy under UV light, visible light, and darkroom was used to evaluate the degradation process. XRD, FTIR, and TGA were employed to characterize the structural and thermal properties of the composite. The nanostructured solid network of aerogels was visualized in SEM microscopy confirming the structural uniformity of cellulose and TiO2-CNTs onto fibers. Moreover, CLSM was used to study the nano-porous network distribution of cellulose fibers and porosity, and the functionalization process in a detailed way. Finally, the photocatalytic activity of aerogels was evaluated by degradation of dye aqueous solutions, with the best photocatalytic removal (>97 %) occurring after 110 min of UV irradiation. In addition, HPLC-MS facilitated the proposed mechanism for the degradation of dyes. These results confirm that cellulose aerogels coupled with nanomaterials enable the creation of economic support to reduce water pollution with higher decontamination rates.

Layer interfacing strategy to derive free standing CoFe@PANI bifunctional electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction and methanol oxidation reaction

Developing inexpensive, highly electrochemically active, and stable catalysts towards electrochemical studies remains challenge for researchers. In this regard, binder-free CoFe@PANI composite electrocatalyst is deposited on nickel foam (NF) substrate via successive electrodeposition of polyaniline (PANI) and CoFe-LDH at Room temperature (RT). As deposited binder-free CoFe@PANI electrocatalyst displays high electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media. In CoFe@PANI structure, interfacing of high-electron conducting PANI establishes strong interconnection with CoFe-LDH by tuning electronic structures, which accelerates the electrochemical performance towards OER and MOR. For OER, CoFe@PANI requires low overpotential (η10) of 237 mV to reach current density (Id) of 10 mA cm-2 and displays low Tafel slope value of 46 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH solution. Also, it displayed specific Id of 120 mA cm-2, when it was tested for MOR in 1 M KOH with 0.5 M methanol solution. The superior electrocatalytic activity of CoFe@PANI is mainly ascribed to high electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), abundant active sites and fast electron transfer between electrocatalyst and electrode surface. Of note, the current work may open new era for design and development of non-precious highly active and stable hybrid electrocatalysts at RT for various applications.

Sustainable cellulose-based multifunctional material for electromagnetic shielding, flame retardancy and antibacterial

Biomass-based multifunctional electromagnetic shielding materials have attracted extensive interest in academia and industry due to the sustainability of biomass and the environmental adaptability of multifunctional materials. After removing lignin and hemicellulose wood become a porous substrate with aligned cellulose, which is a good platform for building cellulose-based materials. In this work, a cellulose composite with sandwich-like structure was constructed by in-situ polymerization of aniline on delignified wood and coating a PDMS/CNT layer. Benefiting from the natural porous hierarchical structure and the constructed multilayer continuous conductive network, the PDMS/CNT/PANI WA exhibits excellent electrical conductivity (18.6 S/m) and electromagnetic shielding performance (shielding efficiency value of 26 dB at the X band (8.2-12.4 GHz)). The synergistic effect of PANI and CNT endowed the material with excellent flame retardancy (HRR, THR and HRC decreased by 84 %, 53.4 % and 83.3 %) and significant antibacterial activity. Moreover, PDMS imparts a water contact angle of 105° to the material, which acts as a protective layer, further improves the durability of the material. This work provides a new strategy for developing sustainable and multifunctional electromagnetic shielding materials.

Sustainable Cellulose Aerogel from Waste Cotton Fabric for High-Performance Solar Steam Generation

The textile industry has been considered as one of the polluting industries, producing a large amount of textile waste and CO₂ emissions each year. Recycling of waste fabric has attracted more research interest in recent years. Herein, renewable polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized cellulose aerogels (CAs) have been designed by a feasible and green way for clean water generation. With the polymerization of PDA on the surface, which possesses excellent photothermal conversion performance and water purification ability, the resulting CA could achieve a high light absorption of 96.5% with the evaporation rate of 2.74 kg m^-2 h^-1 under 1 sun. Meanwhile, the solar steam generator with the increasing height can absorb energy from adjacent ambient air to strengthen the vapor generation. The features of renewable CAs can achieve efficient water evaporation, which combined with their low material cost and recycling, offer promise in reducing not only energy consumption but also the environmental footprint of cotton textiles.

Preparation of aerogel and its application progress in coatings: a mini overview

Aerogels are predominantly mesoporous, extremely lightweight, low density (∼ 0.003 g/cm3) and thermally insulating materials. Over the years, aerogels have gained increasing attention due to their extraordinary properties (light, heat, sound, electricity and force) and application potentials in varieties of fields. Several studies have been carried out regarding aerogel preparation and its applications in coatings on different substrates. In this review, an overview of aerogels preparation and their application progress in coatings of most common substrates is presented. Attention is paid to aerogel coatings of textiles, leather, and substrates other than leather and textiles for special functionalities that could address the application progress in coatings. This review will help to inspire scientists and engineers towards novel aerogel materials and technologies to boost the industrial fabrication of flexible advanced materials.

Highly stretchable and self-healing cellulose nanofiber-mediated conductive hydrogel towards strain sensing application

HYPOTHESIS

Hydrogel-based sensors have attracted considerable attention due to potential opportunities in human health monitoring when both mechanical flexibility and sensing ability are required. Therefore, the integration of excellent mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and self-healing properties into hydrogels may improve the application range and durability of hydrogel-based sensors.

EXPERIMENTS

A novel composite hydrogel composed of polyaniline (PANI), polyacrylic acid (PAA) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) was designed. The viscoelastic, mechanical, conductive, self-healing and sensing properties of hydrogels were studied.

FINDINGS

The TOCNF/PANI/PAA hydrogel exhibits a fracture strain of 982%, tensile strength of 74.98 kPa and electrical conductivity of 3.95 S m^-1, as well as good mechanical and electrical self-healing properties within 6 h at ambient temperature without applying any stimuli. Furthermore, owing to the high sensitivity of the TOCNF/PANI/PAA-0.6 hydrogel-based strain sensor (gauge factor, GF = 8.0), the sensor can accurately and rapidly detect large-scale motion and subtle localized activity. The proposed composite hydrogel is as a promising material for use as soft wearable sensors for health monitoring and smart robotics applications.

Hierarchical PANI/ZnO nanocomposite: synthesis and synergistic effect of shape-selective ZnO nanoflowers and polyaniline sensitization for efficient photocatalytic dye degradation and photoelectrochemical water splitting

Hierarchical nanoflowers (NFs) of zinc oxide (ZnO) have been synthesized in the hexagonal wurtzite structure by a facile hydrothermal method. Polyaniline (PANI) has been prepared by the chemical oxidative polymerization method and incorporated with ZnO NFs by the chemisorption method. The potential of the synthesized nanostructures has been demonstrated for efficient photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and photoelectrochemical water splitting. The PANI/ZnO nanocomposite has exhibited the enhanced photocatalytic activity which is ∼9 fold higher in comparison to pristine ZnO NFs and enhanced photocurrent density which is ∼16 fold higher than the ZnO photoanode. Importantly, ∼4 fold increment in the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) is exhibited by PANI/ZnO, than that of ZnO photoanode. The remarkably enhanced photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical performance of PANI/ZnO nanocomposite is attributed to the availability of more interfacial sites facilitated by the hierarchical ZnO NFs, improved overall photoresponse due to its photosensitization with PANI and the resulting type-II heterojunction between them, which helps in the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers at the interface. A plausible reaction mechanism for the substantially improved performance of nanostructured PANI/ZnO towards MB degradation and water splitting has also been elucidated.

Effects of a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) on Characteristics of Polyaniline Nanoparticles Synthesized by a Solution Plasma Process with an Ar Gas Bubble Channel

The quality of polyaniline nanoparticles (PANI NPs) synthesized in plasma polymerization depends on the discharge characteristics of a solution plasma process (SPP). In this paper, the low temperature dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is introduced to minimize the destruction of aniline molecules induced by the direct current (DC) spark discharge. By adopting the new electrode structure coupled with a gas channel, a low temperature DBD is successfully implemented in a SPP, for the first time, thus inducing an effective interaction between the Ar plasma and aniline monomer. We examine the effects of a low temperature DBD on characteristics of polyaniline nanoparticles synthesized by a SPP with an Ar gas bubble channel. As a result, both carbonization of aniline monomer and erosion of the electrode are significantly reduced, which is confirmed by analyses of the synthesized PANI NPs.

Ultra-fast heat dissipating aerogels derived from polyaniline anchored cellulose nanofibers as sustainable microwave absorbers

Electromagnetic (EM) pollution is ubiquitous and has soared to a great extent in the past few decades. The use of plant sourced cellulose nanofibers to fabricate sustainable and high performance electromagnetic shielding materials is foreseen as a green solution by the electronics industry to address this unseen pollutant. In this view, we report a facile and environmentally benign strategy to synthesize ultra-light and highly conductive aerogels derived from cellulose nanofibers (CNF) decorated with polyaniline (PANI) via a simple in-situ polymerization and subsequent freeze drying process devoid of any volatile organic solvents. The obtained conductive aerogels exhibited density as low as 0.01925 g/cc with a maximum EMI shielding value -32 dB in X band region. These porous shields demonstrated strong microwave absorption behavior (95 %) with minimal reflection (5 %) coupled with high specific EMI SE value ∼1667 dB.cm³. g^-1 which make these aerogels a potential candidate for use in telecommunication, military and defense applications.

New Trends in Bio-Based Aerogels

(1) Background: The fascinating properties of currently synthesized aerogels associated with the flexible approach of sol-gel chemistry play an important role in the emergence of special biomedical applications. Although it is increasingly known and mentioned, the potential of aerogels in the medical field is not sufficiently explored. Interest in aerogels has increased greatly in recent decades due to their special properties, such as high surface area, excellent thermal and acoustic properties, low density and thermal conductivity, high porosity, flame resistance and humidity, and low refractive index and dielectric constant. On the other hand, high manufacturing costs and poor mechanical strength limit the growth of the market. (2) Results: In this paper, we analyze more than 180 articles from recent literature studies focused on the dynamics of aerogels research to summarize the technologies used in manufacturing and the properties of materials based on natural polymers from renewable sources. Biomedical applications of these bio-based materials are also introduced. (3) Conclusions: Due to their complementary functionalities (bioactivity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and unique chemistry), bio-based materials provide a vast capability for utilization in the field of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific research.

Chemical-resistant ammonia sensor based on polyaniline/CuO nanoparticles supported on three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene-based framework nanocomposites

A novel ammonia (NH₃) chemical sensor is presented with ultra-high response, good selectivity, fast response, and long-term stability using detecting layer of polyaniline/cupric oxide nanoparticles supported on three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene-based frameworks (PANI/CuO@3D-NGF) nanocomposite. The NH₃ gas sensing response of the PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was studied by resistivity method in low concentration range of 50 ppb-100 ppm at room temperature. The PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was prepared through in situ polymerization of PANI on the CuO@3D-NGF with a high surface area. Morphological and structural analysis revealed that the ultrathin 3D interconnected graphene substrate maximizes the surface area. It is also shown that the CuO nanoparticles offer active adsorption sites for free NH₃ molecule. The PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite gas sensor shows the response of 930% to 100 ppm NH₃ with an outstanding low detection limit of 50 ppb and an average response time of 30 s at room temperature. The excellent sensing performance of the PANI/CuO@3D-NGF nanocomposite was attributed to 3D interconnected porous structure, remarkable enhancement of charge carriers as a result of CuO@3D-NGF, and modified π-interactions between molecules. An effective utilization of MXene and its effect on electromagnetic interference shielding: flexible, free-standing and thermally conductive composite from MXene–PAT–poly(p-aminophenol)–polyaniline co-polymer

MXene and conductive polymers are attractive candidates for electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) applications. The MXene–PAT-conductive polymer (CP) composites were fabricated by a cost-effective spray coating technique and characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. A new approach has been developed for the synthesis of exfoliated MXene. The MXene–PAT–poly(p-aminophenol)–polyaniline co-polymer composite exhibited good electric conductivity (EC) of 7.813 S cm⁻¹. The composites revealed an excellent thermal properties, which were 0.687 W (m K)⁻¹ thermal conductivity, 2.247 J (g K)⁻¹ heat capacity, 0.282 mm² s⁻¹ thermal diffusivity and 1.330 W s^1/2 m⁻² K⁻¹ thermal effusivity. The composites showed 99.99% shielding efficiency and the MXene–PAT–PANI–PpAP composite (MXPATPA) had EMI shielding effectiveness of 45.18 dB at 8.2 GHz. The reduced form of MXene (r-Ti₃C₂T_x) increased the shielding effectiveness (SE) by 7.26% and the absorption (SE_A) was greatly enhanced by the ant farm like structure. The composites possess excellent thermal and EMI SE characteristics, thus can be applied in areas, such as mobile phones, military utensils, heat-emitting electronic devices, automobiles and radars.

Electrospun Core-Shell Nanofibrous Membranes with Nanocellulose-Stabilized Carbon Nanotubes for Use as High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitor Electrodes with Enhanced Water Resistance, Thermal Stability, and Mechanical Toughness

A high-performance flexible supercapacitor electrode with a core-shell structure is successfully developed from cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-stabilized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). By incorporating poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), a cross-linked nanofibrous membrane (CNT-CNC/PVA-PAA) is prepared as the core material via directional electrospinning, followed by a thermal treatment. The flexible supercapacitor electrodes are eventually fabricated via the in situ polymerization of polyaniline (PANI), which was used as the coating shell material, on the aligned electrospun nanofibers. By taking advantage of the thermally induced esterification cross-linking that occurs among PVA, PAA, and the CNT-CNC nanohybrids, the membranes present with enhanced water resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. After the surface coating of the PANI shell, the optimized PANI@CNT-CNC/PVA-PAA nanofibrous membranes exhibit a large porosity, an enhanced specific surface area, a superior tensile strength of ∼54.8 MPa, and a favorable electroconductivity of ∼0.44 S m^-1. As expected, the nanofibrous electrodes with a specific capacitance of 164.6 F g^-1 can maintain 91% of the original capacitance after 2000 cycles. The symmetrical solid-state supercapacitor assembled by the nanofibrous electrodes shows an excellent capacitance of 155.5 F g^-1 and a remarkable capacitance retention of 92, 90, and 89% after 2000 cycles under flat, bending, and twisting deformations, respectively.

Nanocomposite of hydrophobic cellulose aerogel/graphene quantum dot/Pd: synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application

Novel hydrophobic cellulose aerogel (CA) supported graphene quantum dots (GQD)/Pd were synthesized with high lipophilicity, superior porosity as well as high catalytic activity. The nanocomposite aerogel was obtained in four steps, including transformation of cotton to CA, a silanization reaction of CA in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles to give polysiloxane/TiO2 nanoparticles supported on CA (ST@CA), a modification of ST@CA with GQD to yield polysiloxane/TiO2 nanoparticles/graphene quantum dots supported on CA (STG@CA), and finally a deposition of Pd nanoparticles on STG@CA. The synthesized aerogel demonstrated hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 136.2°. It also exhibited excellent oil/water selective absorption capacity with an oil absorption of up to 79 g g-1 with 134 g g-1 selectivity. Finally, the nanocomposite was used as a heterogeneous catalyst in the oxidation reaction of alcohols, ethylbenzene, and alkenes. High yields, excellent selectivities, green and mild reaction conditions, recyclability and biocompatibility of the catalyst were important features of the reactions.

Efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of p-phenylenediamine using a novel PANI/ZnO anchored bio-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite

Herein, a novel approach was reported for the fabrication of a polyaniline/ZnO-anchored bio-reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite for the efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of p-phenylenediamine.

Chlamydomonas angulosa (Green Alga) and Nostoc commune (Blue-Green Alga) Microalgae-Cellulose Composite Aerogel Beads: Manufacture, Physicochemical Characterization, and Cd (II) Adsorption

This study presents composite aerogel beads prepared by mixing dissolved cellulose with Chlamydomonas angulosa and Nostoc commune cells, respectively, at 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5% (w/w). The manufactured composites (termed regenerated cellulose (RC)), with C. angulosa (RCCA-(1, 3, and 5)), and with N. commune (RCNC-(1, 3, and 5)) were analyzed. Both RCCA-5 and RCNC-5 showed the high specific surface area to be about 261.3 and 332.8 m²·g⁻¹. In the microstructure analysis, network structures were observed in the cross-sections of RC, RCCA-5, and RCNC-5. The pyrolysis temperature of the RCCA-5 and RCNC-5 composite aerogel beads was rapidly increased about 250 °C during the mixing of cellulose with C. angulosa and N. commune. The chemical analysis of RC, RCCA-5, and RCNC-5 showed peaks corresponding to various functional groups, such as amide, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups from protein, lipid, and carbohydrate. RCNC-5 at pH 6 demonstrated highest Cd²⁺ removal rate about 90.3%, 82.1%, and 63.1% at 10, 25, and 50 ppm Cd²⁺, respectively. At pH 6, Cd²⁺ adsorption rates per unit weight of the RCNC-5 were about 0.9025, 2.0514, and 3.1547 mg/g at 10, 25, and 50 ppm, respectively. The peaks assigned to the amide, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups in RCCA-5, RCNC-5, and RC were shifted or disappeared immediately after adsorption of Cd²⁺. The specific surface area, total pore volume, and mean pore diameter of composites was decreased due to adsorption of Cd²⁺ on the developed materials. As can be seen in the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) spectrum, significant changes in the molecular structure of the composite aerogel beads were not observed even after adsorption of Cd²⁺.

Bifunctional Hybrid Composites from Collagen Biowastes for Heterogeneous Applications

We report the synthesis of an electrically conductive and magnetically active hybrid biocomposite comprising collagen and polyaniline (PAni) as the matrix and iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) as the filler through an in situ polymerization technique. Here, the matrix biopolymer, collagen, was extracted from trimmed wastes of animal hides generated from the leather industry. The as-synthesized C/PAni/IONP hybrid biocomposite powder possesses excellent electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and saturation magnetization, thereby providing scope for a wide range of applications. We show that the bifunctional composite has an ability to conduct electrons using a light emitting diode and battery setup, degrade dye under sunlight owing to its inherent photocatalytic activity, and absorb oil from oil-water mixtures with easier collection under magnetic tracking. We also demonstrate that the composite has remarkable electromagnetic interference shielding in the X-band frequency range. The results suggest that biowastes can be converted into useful high-value hybrid materials for applications in catalysis, biological, electronic, and environmental fields, thereby presenting a scalable and sustainable approach.

Facile synthesis of chitin nanocrystals decorated on 3D cellulose aerogels as a new multi-functional material for waste water treatment with enhanced anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties

We report the fabrication and application of multi-functional hybrid bio-aerogels based on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and chitin nanocrystals (CNCs).

A comprehensive review on the synthesis of PANI nanocomposites and their applications as gas sensors and biosensors has been presented.

Polymer/Carbon-Based Hybrid Aerogels: Preparation, Properties and Applications

Aerogels are synthetic porous materials derived from sol-gel materials in which the liquid component has been replaced with gas to leave intact solid nanostructures without pore collapse. Recently, aerogels based on natural or synthetic polymers, called polymer or organic aerogels, have been widely explored due to their porous structures and unique properties, such as high specific surface area, low density, low thermal conductivity and dielectric constant. This paper gives a comprehensive review about the most recent progresses in preparation, structures and properties of polymer and their derived carbon-based aerogels, as well as their potential applications in various fields including energy storage, adsorption, thermal insulation and flame retardancy. To facilitate further research and development, the technical challenges are discussed, and several future research directions are also suggested in this review.

Biotemplate synthesis of polyaniline@cellulose nanowhiskers/natural rubber nanocomposites with 3D hierarchical multiscale structure and improved electrical conductivity

Development of novel and versatile strategies to construct conductive polymer composites with low percolation thresholds and high mechanical properties is of great importance. In this work, we report a facile and effective strategy to prepare polyaniline@cellulose nanowhiskers (PANI@CNs)/natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites with 3D hierarchical multiscale structure. Specifically, PANI was synthesized in situ on the surface of CNs biotemplate to form PANI@CNs nanohybrids with high aspect ratio and good dispersity. Then NR latex was introduced into PANI@CNs nanohybrids suspension to enable the self-assembly of PANI@CNs nanohybrids onto NR latex microspheres. During cocoagulation process, PANI@CNs nanohybrids selectively located in the interstitial space between NR microspheres and organized into a 3D hierarchical multiscale conductive network structure in NR matrix. The combination of the biotemplate synthesis of PANI and latex cocoagulation method significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the NR-based nanocomposites simultaneously. The electrical conductivity of PANI@CNs/NR nanocomposites containing 5 phr PANI showed 11 orders of magnitude higher than that of the PANI/NR composites at the same loading fraction,; meanwhile, the percolation threshold was drastically decreased from 8.0 to 3.6 vol %.
