Abstract
Two new families of zinc/cobalt/aluminum-based pigments, with a unique composition, were obtained through the polyol method. The hydrolysis process of a mixture of Co(CH3COO)2, Zn(acac)2 and Al(acac)3 (acac- = acetylacetonate ion) in 1,4-butanediol afforded dark blue gels (wPZnxCo1-xAl), in the presence of a supplementary amount of water, and light green powders (PZnxCo1-xAl), respectively, for the water-free procedure (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4). The calcination of the precursors yielded dark green (wZnxCo1-xAl) and blue (ZnxCo1-xAl) products. XRD measurements and Rietveld refinement indicate the co-existence of three spinel phases, in different proportions: ZnxCo1-xAl2O4, Co3O4 and the defect spinel, γ-Al2.67O4. The Raman scattering and XPS spectra are in agreement with the compositions of the samples. The morphology of wZnxCo1-xAl consists of large and irregular spherical particle aggregates (ca. 5-100 mm). Smaller agglomerates (ca. 1-5 mm) with a unique silkworm cocoon-like hierarchical morphology composed of cobalt aluminate cores covered with flake-like alumina shells are formed for ZnxCo1-xAl. TEM and HR-TEM analyses revealed the formation of crystalline, polyhedral particles of 7-43 nm sizes for wZnxCo1-xAl, while for ZnxCo1-xAl, a duplex-type morphology, with small (7-13 nm) and larger (30-40 nm) particles, was found. BET assessment showed that both series of oxides are mesoporous materials, with different pore structures, with the water-free samples exhibiting the largest surface areas due, most likely, to the high percent of aluminum oxide. A chemical mechanism is proposed to highlight the role of the water amount and the nature of the starting compounds in the hydrolysis reaction products and, further, in the morpho-structural features and composition of the resulting spinel oxides. The CIE L*a*b* and C* colorimetric parameters indicate that the pigments are bright, with a moderate degree of luminosity, presenting an outstanding high blueness.

Abstract
Effective and targeted delivery of the antitumour drugs towards the specific cancer spot is the major motive of drug delivery. In this direction, suitably functionalised magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilised as a theranostic agent for imaging, hyperthermia and drug delivery applications. Herein, the authors reported the preparation of multifunctional polyethyleneglycol-diamine functionalised mesoporous superparamagnetic iron oxide NPs (SPION) prepared by a facile solvothermal method for biomedical applications. To endow targeting ability towards tumour site, folic acid (FA) is attached to the amine groups which are present on the NPs surface by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide chemistry. FA attached SPION shows good colloidal stability and possesses high drug-loading efficiency of ∼ 96% owing to its mesoporous nature and the electrostatic attachment of daunosamine (NH3+) group of doxorubicin (DOX) towards the negative surface charge of carboxyl and hydroxyl group. The NPs possess superior magnetic properties in result endowed with high hyperthermic ability under alternating magnetic field reaching the hyperthermic temperature of 43°C within 223 s at NP's concentration of 1 mg/ml. The functionalised NPs possess non-appreciable toxicity in breast cancer cells (MCF-7) which is triggered under DOX-loaded SPION.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cancer is a major health problem worldwide, and the most extensive treatment can be obtained by using chemotherapy in the clinic. However, due to the low selectivity of cancer cells, chemotherapy drugs produce a series of grievous side effects on normal cells. METHODS In this research, we developed novel nanocarriers for magnetically targeted near-infrared (NIR) light-electromagnetic wave dual controlled drug delivery based on MgFe2O4@CuS nanoparticles (NPs) modified with aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) in response to magnetic, NIR light, and electromagnetic wave irradiation. Synthesis and characterization of MgFe2O4@CuS-APTES NPs was carried out using X-ray diffraction measurements, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence emission spectra, UV-1800 spectrophotometer, N5230A vector network analyzer, MDS-6 microwave sample preparation system, and superconducting quantum interference device. In addition to that mentioned above, we also explored many other sides, such as the drug-loading, drug-controlled release efficiency, elect99omagnetic wave thermal effect and photo-thermal effect. RESULTS The results showed that APTES-modified MgFe2O4@CuS NPs had 37% high drug-loading capacity and high electromagnetic wave thermal conversion ability and NIR-light thermal conversion ability. In addition, ibuprofen (IBU) release from the MgFe2O4@CuS-APTES-IBU depends on the electromagnetic wave (2.45 GHz) and 1060 nm NIR light irradiation. After five cycles, the drug-release percentage was 90% and 66% separately, and could be adjusted by the time and cycles times of electromagnetic wave and NIR light irritation. Electromagnetic wave irradiation compared with NIR light irradiation, has a higher drug release rate and better penetration. Therefore, choosing different stimulation methods according to the treatment needs of the disease, we can achieve accurate personalized treatment of the disease. DISCUSSION Our findings indicate that multifunctional APTES modified MgFe2O4@CuS NPs could be used for the first time as a new drug carrier for "location-timing-quantification" drug release with magnetic targeting and dual control of NIR light-electromagnetic waves.

Abstract
This work reports the fabrication of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with various biocompatible surfactants such as glutamic acid (GA), citric acid (CA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinylpyrrolidine (PVP), ethylene diamine (EDA) and cetyl-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) via co-precipitation method and their comparative inductive heating ability for hyperthermia (HT) applications. X-ray and electron diffraction analyses validated the formation of well crystallined inverse spinel structured Fe3O4 NPs (crystallite size of ~ 8–10 nm). Magnetic studies confirmed the superparamagnetic (SPM) behaviour for all the NPs with substantial magnetisation (63–68 emu/g) and enhanced magnetic susceptibility is attributed to the greater number of occupations of Fe2+ ions in the lattice as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, distinctive heating response (specific absorption rate, SAR from 130 to 44 W/g) of NPs with similar size and magnetisation is observed. The present study was successful in establishing a direct correlation between relaxation time (~ 9.42–15.92 ns) and heating efficiency of each surface functionalised NPs. Moreover, heat dissipated in different surface grafted NPs is found to be dependent on magnetic susceptibility, magnetic anisotropy and magnetic relaxation time. These results open very promising avenues to design surface functionalised magnetite NPs for effective HT applications.

Abstract
A mesoporous magnetic nanohybrid functionalized with 14 wt % carbon nitride (CN) and loaded with curcumin (Cur) has been developed as a combination platform for photodynamic therapy and magnetic hyperthermia. CN-Cur complexes on the nanoparticle surface facilitate fast charge separation of hole-electron pairs under blue LED light irradiation and subsequent singlet oxygen generation. Cur release from the nanoparticle was significant only when exposed to both lysosomal pH (pH = 5.2) and an alternating current magnetic field (AMF). The mesoporous magnetic carbon nitride (MMCN) caused a 350% increase in the level of intracellular ROS as compared to the light exposed untreated control group. The nanohybrid was non-hemolytic and found to be biocompatible with HUVEC cells at concentrations up to 360 μg/mL. A similar concentration under AMF exposure caused a localized temperature rise of 4.2 °C and resulted in a 60% reduction in C6 cell viability. The cancer cell death further increased up to 80% under sequential exposure to light and AMF. The combinatorial treatment exerted significant cytoskeletal and nuclear damage in the cancer cells as assessed by confocal microscopy. The nanohybrid also exhibited relaxivity of 88 mM-1 s-1, imparting significant T2 weighted contrast to the cancer cells.

Abstract
Antibacterial activity of nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocomposites (NCs) has received wide spread attention in biomedical applications. In this direction, the authors prepared zinc oxide (ZnO), iron oxide (Fe3O4), and their composite including reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by hydrothermal method. The structural and microstructural properties of the synthesised NPs and NCs were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis, TGA, and TEM analysis. PEG-coated ZnO and Fe3O4 form in hexagonal wurtzite and inverse spinel structures, respectively. ZnO forms in rod-shaped (aspect ratio of ∼3) morphology, whereas well-dispersed spherical-shaped morphology of ∼10 nm is observed in Fe3O4 NPs. The ZnO/Fe3O4 composite possesses a homogeneous distribution of above two phases and shows a very good colloidal stability in aqueous solvent. These synthesised particles exhibited varying antibacterial activity against gram-positive strain Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and gram-negative strain Escherichia coli (E. coli). The nanocomposite exhibits a better cidal effect on E. coli when compared to S. aureus when treated with 1 mg/ml concentration. Further, the addition of rGO has intensified the anti-bacterial effect to a much higher extent due to synergistic influence of individual components.

Abstract
Polycrystalline ferrite powders of Mg1-xCuxFe2O4 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) system synthesized by ceramic technology have been investigated. Samples showed the non-monotonic dependency of heat generation effect in AC magnetic field with increasing concentration of copper. To reveal peculiarities of the structural and magnetic state of the samples and their influence on the heat generation ability we performed a complex study, including X-ray diffractometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, measurements of temperature dependencies of susceptibility and saturation magnetization, hysteresis parameters and FORC. Typical ferrimagnetic character with small coercivity and saturation magnetization was found. We carried out that anomalous influence of Cu2+ ion substitution respectively to the Mg1-xCuxFe2O4 ferrite powder manifested in heat generation ability rise up to x=0.6. The subsequent sharp reducing of this characteristic were accompanied by the main phase crystal structure distortion followed by phase separation to cubic and tetragonal structure. This was matched by in an increase of ferrite particles crystallite size and size distribution appearance. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature dependencies observed for powders via Cu substitution was explained by phase composition, the cations distributions between ferrite sublattices, modulation of exchange interaction.

Abstract
This work aims to demonstrate the need for in silico design via numerical simulation to produce optimal Fe3O4-based magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for magnetic hyperthermia by minimizing the impact of intracellular environments on heating efficiency. By including the relevant magnetic parameters, such as magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interactions, into a numerical model, the heating efficiency of as prepared colloids was preserved in the intracellular environment, providing the largest in vitro specific power absorption (SPA) values yet reported. Dipolar interactions due to intracellular agglomeration, which are included in the simulated SPA, were found to be the main cause of changes in the magnetic relaxation dynamics of MNPs under in vitro conditions. These results pave the way for the magnetism-based design of MNPs that can retain their heating efficiency in vivo, thereby improving the outcome of clinical hyperthermia experiments.

Abstract
Mesoporous magnetic nanoparticles (MMNPs) have been synthesized through a facile soft chemical route and are conjugated with multiple therapeutic agents. These MMNPs have the ability to contain and deliver both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs simultaneously with the mediation of an AC magnetic field (ACMF). Furthermore, the synthesis and characterization of doxorubicin hydrochloride:paclitaxel (DOX:TXL) and doxorubicin hydrochloride:cisplatin (DOX:Cis-Pt) conjugates are demonstrated. MMNPs show an excellent loading efficiency of ~96:83% (DOX:TXL) and ~93:83% (DOX:Cis-Pt) along with a loading capacity of ~0.002:0.002 mg mg(-1) (DOX:TXL) and ~0.002:0.002 mg mg(-1) (DOX:Cis-Pt), respectively. Over a period of 180 h, a sustained release of drugs is observed and shows a better efficiency at pH 4.3 (~85:63%-DOX:TXL and ~86:73%-DOX:Cis-Pt) compared to that under physiological pH conditions (~28:22%-DOX:TXL and ~26:22%-DOX:Cis-Pt). The MMNPs can release ~37:22% (DOX:TXL) and ~34:25% (DOX:Cis-Pt) within 30 min when triggered by an ACMF (at ~43 °C). The in vitro cytotoxic effect, the ROS generation level and cell cycle distribution analysis of DOX:TXL-MMNPs and DOX:Cis-Pt-MMNPs treated MDA-MB231, MCF-7 and PC3 cancer cells are demonstrated. Enhanced cell apoptosis is observed by thermo-chemotherapy which includes application of an ACMF for 15 min. Specifically, DOX:TXL-MMNPs are more effective than DOX:Cis-Pt-MMNPs towards the PC3 cell line. The internalization of multiple drug loaded MMNPs by cells and their morphological changes due to thermo-chemotherapy are confirmed through confocal microscopy. From the present results, it is observed that the DOX:TXL and DOX:Cis-Pt conjugated MMNPs, under an ACMF, can readily minimize drug resistance. This has significantly enhanced the cell apoptosis of target cancer cells.

Abstract
Magnetic nanoparticles have been widely investigated for their great potential as mediators of heat for localised hyperthermia therapy. Nanocarriers have also attracted increasing attention due to the possibility of delivering drugs at specific locations, therefore limiting systematic effects. The enhancement of the anti-cancer effect of chemotherapy with application of concurrent hyperthermia was noticed more than thirty years ago. However, combining magnetic nanoparticles with molecules of drugs in the same nanoformulation has only recently emerged as a promising tool for the application of hyperthermia with combined chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer. The main feature of this review is to present the recent advances in the development of multifunctional therapeutic nanosystems incorporating both magnetic nanoparticles and drugs, and their superior efficacy in treating cancer compared to either hyperthermia or chemotherapy as standalone therapies. The principle of magnetic fluid hyperthermia is also presented.
