Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) presents a promising alternative to conventional desalination systems, particularly for the treatment of hypersaline wastewater. However, the large-scale application of MD is hindered by challenges such as membrane wetting, membrane fouling, and low permeate flux. Herein, we proposed an air/liquid interface deposition method to fabricate a Janus membrane, termed the PVDF-PDA/PEI-Si membrane. The membrane featured a nanosieving, superhydrophilic polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) layer decorated with silica nanoparticles, coupled with a microporous, hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) layer. The introduction of a dense PDA/PEI-Si layer featuring high surface energy significantly enhanced the wetting and fouling resistance of the membrane, with a minor effect on the permeate flux. The performance enhancement was particularly evident when hypersaline water containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and oily contaminants was used as the feed. The interactions between the membrane and contaminants were calculated using the XDLVO theory and molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the enhanced anti-wetting and anti-fouling properties, respectively. According to the XDLVO theory, a large energy barrier must be overcome for the SDS to attach onto the PDA/PEI-Si surface. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the weak interaction energy between the oily foulants and the PVDF-PDA/PEI-Si membrane due to its high surface energy. This study presents a promising approach for the fabrication of high-performance MD membranes and provides new insights into the mechanisms underlying the enhanced anti-wetting and anti-fouling properties.

Abstract
In 2007, polydopamine (PDA) films were shown to be formed spontaneously on the surface of all known classes of materials by simply dipping those substrates in an aerated dopamine solution at pH = 8.5 in the presence of Tris(hydroxymethyl) amino methane buffer. This universal deposition method has raised a burst of interest in surface science, owing not only to the universality of this water based one pot deposition method but also to the ease of secondary modifications. Since then, PDA films and particles are shown to have applications in energy conversion, water remediation systems, and last but not least in bioscience. The deposition of PDA films from aerated dopamine solutions is however a slow and inefficient process at ambient temperature with most of the formed material being lost as a precipitate. This incited to explore the possibility to get PDA and related films based on other catecholamines, using other oxidants than dissolved oxygen and other deposition methods. Those alternatives to get PDA and related films are reviewed and compared in this paper. It will appear that many more investigations are required to get better insights in the relationships between the preparation method of PDA and the properties of the obtained coatings.

Abstract
We previously reported a novel polymeric surface coating, namely HaloFilmTM , that can immobilize and extend the antimicrobial activity of chlorine on surfaces. In this study, we demonstrated the continuous antiviral efficacy of HaloFilmTM when applied on stainless steel and cotton gauze as two representative models for non-porous and porous surfaces against SARS-CoV-2. Forty-eight hours post HaloFilm application and chlorination, and 2 hours post the viral challenge, the inoculum titer was reduced by 2.25±0.33 and ≥4.36±0.23 log10 TCIDA50 on non-porous and porous surfaces, respectively. The half-life of the virus was shorter (13.86 min) on a HaloFilmTM -coated surface compared to what has been reported on copper (46.44 min).

Abstract
Inspired by the application of dopamine as an "anchor" and UV absorber, novel sustainable colorants with biscatecholic structure were synthesized through a simple incorporation of simple azo chromophores with dopamine. Their structures were confirmed using MS and NMR analyses, and their application on textile materials was investigated. Compared to the simple azo chromophores with almost no coloring ability on fabrics, the biscatecholic colorants could color different fabrics effectively, mainly through self-polymerization only in the presence of a trace amount of organic base at room temperature, which is environmentally friendly in terms of saving resources and alleviating chemical pollution. Meanwhile, the UV resistance of colored fabrics was enhanced significantly, showing the advantage of protecting wearers from UV damage.

Construction of a sensitive and selective plasmonic biosensor for prostate specific antigen by combining magnetic molecularly-imprinted polymer and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Abstract
Selective and sensitive detection of cancer biomarkers in serum samples is critical for early diagnosis of cancer. Prostate specific antigen is an important biomarker of prostate cancer, which ranks high among cancer-related deaths of men over 50 years old. Herein, a novel analytical method was introduced for detection of PSA by combining high selectivity of molecularly-imprinted polymers and high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Firstly, magnetic nanoparticles were grafted with an imprinted layer by using tannic acid as a functional monomer, diethylenetriamine as a cross-linker and prostate specific antigen as a template molecule. Detailed surface characterization and re-binding experiment results indicated that the imprinting of the antigen was successful with an imprinting factor of 5.58. The prepared magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were used as an antibody-free capture probe and labeled with gold nanoparticles that were modified with anti-PSA and a Raman reporter, namely 5,5'-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid). Thus, a plasmonic structure (sandwich complex) was formed between MMIP and the SERS label. The limit of detection and limit of quantification of the designed sensor were 0.9 pg/mL and 3.2 pg/mL, respectively. The sensor also showed high recovery rates (98.0-100.1% for healthy person and 99.0-101.3% for patient) with low standard deviations (less than 4.3% for healthy person and less than 3.3% for patient) for PSA in serum samples. Compared with the traditional immunoassays, the proposed method has several advantages like low cost, reduced detection procedure, fast response, high sensitivity and selectivity. It is believed that the proposed method can be potentially used for selective and sensitive determination of tumor marker of prostate cancer in clinical applications.

Abstract
Membranes with asymmetric wettability have attracted significant interest by virtue of their unique transport characteristics and functionalities arising from different wetting behaviors of each membrane surface. The cross-sectional wettability distinction enables a membrane to realize directional liquid transport or multifunction integration, resulting in rapid advance in applications, such as moisture management, fog collection, oil-water separation, and membrane distillation. Compared with traditional homogeneous membranes, these membranes possess enhanced transport performance and higher separation efficiency owing to the synergistic or individual effects of asymmetric wettability. This Review covers the recent progress in fabrication, transport mechanisms, and applications of electrospun membranes with asymmetric wettability and provides a perspective on future development in this important area.

Abstract
In nature, laccase enzymatically catalyzes the reaction of phenolic compounds with oxygen to produce hardened surfaces known as cuticles on insects and plants. Inspired by this natural process, the present work investigated a robust, biodegradable hydrogel synthesized from dopamine and gelatin. This gel is obtained by the oxidation of dopamine dissolved in water, after which the resulting quinone compound automatically undergoes self-polymerization. The oxidized dopamine subsequently undergoes Schiff base and Michael addition reactions with gelatin, such that the exposed gelatin surface cross-links to generate a continuous hardened hydrogel film. Because gelatin transitions between sol and gel states with changes in temperature, two- and three-dimensional structures could be obtained from the gel state. This bio-inspired interfacial cross-linking reaction provides a simple means of forming complex morphologies and represents a promising technique for bio-applications.

Abstract
Among the different materials used as protheses for the treatment of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) plays a leading role owing to its mechanical properties as explained in the first part of this review. However, this material is poorly cell adhesive, which is expected for its contact on the abdominal face, but should display specific tissue adhesion on its thoracic exposed faced. A side specific functionalization method is hence required. The deposition of a nanosized polydopamine film on PTFE is known to be possible but immersion of the e-PTFE membrane in an aerated dopamine solution leads to a functionalization not only on both faces of the membrane but also in its porous volume. The fact that polydopamine also forms at the water/air interface has allowed to transfer a polydopamine film on only one face of the e-PTFE membrane. The deposition method and applications of such Janus like membranes are reviewed in the second part of the review.

Abstract
Recently, the biomineralization of enzyme in metal-organic-framework (enzyme-MOF) composite have shown a great potential to increase enzymes stability without compromising their activity; hence, it is desirable for its applications in biosensing devices. Nonetheless, most of the enzyme-MOF research has been focusing on enzyme encapsulation in particle form, which limits its synthesis flexibility for practical applications because of its requirement for postsynthesis immobilization onto solid support. Therefore, to develop a diagnostic device out of the biomineralized enzyme, surface patterning and integration of microfluidic system offers many advantages. In this work, mussel-inspired polydopamine/polyethyleneimine (PDA/PEI) coating is employed to pattern enzyme-MOF in microfluidic channels and exploit the wettability gradient for "pumpless transportation" effect. As a proof of concept, we combine a cascade reaction of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzymes to detect glucose into a patterned zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) thin film on a flexible polymeric substrate. The results show that the ZIF-8/GOx&HRP in situ composites on PDA/PEI patterns have good acid and thermal stability compared with samples without ZIF-8. ZIF-8/GOx&HRP in situ shows high selectivity toward glucose, linear sensitivity of 0.00303 Abs/μM, and the limit of detection of 8 μM glucose concentration. An unexpected benefit of this approach is the ability of the ZIF-8 thin-film structure to provide a diffusion limiting effect for substrate influx, thus, producing high range of linear response range (8 μM to 5 mM of glucose). This work provides insights into the spatial location of the enzymes in MOF thin films and the potential of such patterning techniques for MOF-based biosensors using other types of biological elements such as antibodies and aptamers.

Abstract
Thiols play a crucial role in various biological processes, and the discrimination of thiols in biofluids is a significant but difficult issue. Herein, a facile label-free non-invasive fluorescent sensor array has been presented based on PDA/PEIn-Cu2+ in three different pH buffer solutions for pattern discrimination of thiols and chiral recognition of cysteine (Cys) enantiomers in biofluids toward health monitoring. The proposed sensor array was fabricated based on the fact that Cu2+ has a strong affinity toward thiols, which prevents Cu2+ from binding PDA/PEIn, and the fluorescence properties of PDA/PEIn were recovered to a certain degree. Different thiols exhibited different affinities toward Cu2+, generating distinct fluorescence response patterns. These response patterns are characteristic for each thiol and can be discriminated by principal component analysis (PCA). In this work, three types of PDA/PEI48-Cu2+ sensors (PDA/PEI48-Cu4 2+, PDA/PEI48-Cu4.5 2+ and PDA/PEI48-Cu5 2+) were prepared by using acetate buffer with different pHs (at 4, 4.5, and 5) to form our proposed sensor array, which could realize the pattern discrimination of 8 thiols. Moreover, we successfully realized the sensitivity and selectivity assays to these thiols. Furthermore, the proposed sensor array could discriminate mixtures of thiols as well as the chiral recognition of mixtures of Cys enantiomers, promising its potential practical usage. Significantly, the resultant practical application in real samples showed that it could be a fascinating assay for the development of non-invasive diagnosis. This method promises the facile, sensitive and powerful discrimination of thiols in biofluids and would sprout more relevant strategies toward a broad range of applications.

Abstract
Polydopamine (PDA), the final oxidation product of dopamine or other catecholamines, attracted much attention as versatile coatings that can be used to cover the surface of almost all materials with a conformal layer of adjustable thickness ranging from a few to about 100 nm. These PDA layers can be subsequently modified with molecules carrying nucleophilic groups or with metallic nanoparticles from solutions containing metallic cations. However, during the deposition of PDA film on the surfaces, the reaction products that are simultaneously obtained from the oxidation of catecholamines in solution precipitate. Hence, some recent effort has been devoted to produce PDA in the form of nanoparticles. The aim of this short review is to give a comprehensive description of the synthesis methods yielding of PDA nanoparticles in the absence or in the presence of templating agents (polymers, polyelectrolytes, surfactants, proteins, and even some small organic molecules). We will also describe the use of thin PDA layers to coat already synthesized nanoparticles or nanotubes. Finally, several first applications of the obtained PDA nanoparticles will be described.

Abstract
There is a close correlation between body health and the level of biofluid-derived metal ions, which makes it an attractive model analyte for noninvasive health monitoring. The present work has developed a novel nose/tongue-mimic chemosensor array based on bioinspired polydopamine/polyethylenimine copolymers (PDA/PEI n) for label-free fluorescent determination of metal ions in biofluids. Three types of PDA/PEI n (PDA/PEI6, PDA/PEI18, and PDA/PEI48) were prepared by using different concentrations of PEI to construct the proposed sensor array, which would lead to unique fluorescence response patterns upon challenged with metal ions for their pattern discrimination. The results show that as few as 3 PDA/PEI n sensors can successfully realize the largescale sensitive detection of metal ions in biofluids. Moreover, we have demonstrated that PDA/PEI n sensors are qualified for lifetime-based pattern discrimination application. Furthermore, the sensors can distinguish between different concentrations of metal ions, as well as a mixture of different metal ions in biofluids, even the mixtures with different valence states. The method promises the simple, rapid, sensitive, and powerful discrimination of metal ions in accessible biofluids, showing the potential applications in the diagnosis of metal ion-involved diseases.

Abstract
Mussel-inspired chemistry based on polydopamine (PDA) deposition has been developed as a facile and universal method for the surface modification of various materials. However, the inherent shortcomings of PDA coatings still impede their practical applications in the development of functional materials. In this review, we introduce the recent progress in the emerging dopamine-assisted co-deposition as a one-step strategy for functionalizing PDA-based coatings, and improving them in the aspects of deposition rate, morphology uniformity, surface wettability and chemical stability. The co-deposition mechanisms are categorized and discussed according to the interactions of dopamine or PDA with the introduced co-component. We also emphasize the influence of these interactions on the properties of the resultant PDA-based coatings. Meanwhile, we conclude the representative potential applications of those dopamine-assisted co-deposited coatings in material science, especially including separation membranes and biomaterials. Finally, some important issues and perspectives for theoretical study and applications are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Polydopamine is widely used in surface modification, nanofiltration, photonic devices and drug delivery. The formation mechanism and properties of polydopamine are modified by the experimental conditions. Herein we demonstrated a comparison study of free-standing polydopamine films generated at the air-solution interface and their corresponding nanoparticles in solutions, in the presence of various metallic cations, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Co2+. Adding metallic ions influenced the intermediates in dopamine polymerization, and in turn the morphology and properties of the produced free-standing polydopamine films. Moreover, we observed that the polymerization process accompanying the stratification determines the formation of free-standing films at the air-solution interface: the fast polymerization of dopamine in a Co2+ environment leads to a rugged film surface and porous film body, whereas the comparatively slow polymerization of dopamine under conditions of other metallic ions results in a smooth and solid film. In addition, the water contact angles of the upper and lower surface of the polydopamine films were different. This investigation enriches our knowledge of dopamine polymerization in different environments, which is particularly useful for further application of free-standing polydopamine films.

Abstract
Dopamine-modified alginate and gelatin were prepared. The polymers were characterized and the properties of their aqueous solutions were investigated. Aqueous solutions of dopamine-modified alginate and gelatin with a concentration exceeding 20 mg/mL naturally formed gels after 16 h. Although polydopamine itself was not used for template-assisted nanostructure formation, the modified polymers could be used with dopamine. Mixing with dopamine allowed the precise shape of the template to be maintained in the resulting material, allowing nanopatterned surfaces and nanotubes to be prepared.

Abstract
Efficient delivery of DNA to cells is the primary concern to address the objective of gene therapy. Many attempts have been made to develop polymeric carriers for gene delivery. To have an efficient carrier, it is vital to understand the properties of the vector for better stability, transfection efficiency and minimal toxicity. Branched polyethylenimine (bPEI) has been considered as the 'gold standard' for gene delivery but suffers a major drawback of exhibiting high cytotoxicity. Here, we have attempted to develop a mussel-derived polymer, polydopamine (PDA), conjugated polyethylenimine nanoparticles in such a way that the toxic nature of bPEI is suppressed by the conversion of free primary amine groups to secondary and tertiary amines. Keeping the amount of PDA fixed, varying amounts of bPEIs of different molecular weights (25, 10 and 1.8kDa) were conjugated via Michael addition and/or Schiff base. A trend in hydrodynamic size of the conjugated nanoparticles was observed in the range from 160 to 300nm and zeta potential from +12-30mV in the projected three series, viz., (i) PDA1-25bPEI0.5, PDA1-25bPEI1, PDA1-25bPEI2; (ii) PDA1-10bPEI0.5, PDA1-10bPEI1, PDA1-10bPEI2; and (iii) PDA1-1.8bPEI0.5, PDA1-1.8bPEI1, PDA1-1.8bPEI2. A visible trend in the DNA condensation ability and buffering capacity was also noticed. Further, cell cytotoxicity assays revealed that pDNA complexes of PDA-bPEI nanoparticles were non-toxic to mammalian cells and these complexes exhibited several folds higher transfection efficiency than the complexes of native bPEIs as demonstrated by fluorescence measurements and flow cytometry. Altogether, the results advocate the promising potential of these conjugated nanoparticles for future in vivo applications.

Abstract
Here we report on the flattening of water droplets using an ultrathin membrane of autopolymerized polydopamine at the air/water interface. This has only been previously reported with the use of synthetic or extracted peptides, two-dimensional designed synthetic peptide thin films with thicknesses of several tens of nanometers. However, in the previous study, the shape of the water droplet was changed irreversibly and the phenomenon was observed only at the air/water interface. In the present study, an ultrathin polydopamine membrane-stabilized droplet induced the flattening of a water droplet at the air/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces because a polydopamine membrane was spontaneously formed at these interfaces. Furthermore, a reversible transformation of the droplet to flat and dome shape droplets were discovered at the liquid/liquid interface. These are a completely new system because the polydopamine membrane is dynamically synthesized at the interface and the formation speed of the polydopamine membrane overcomes the flattening time scale. These results will provide new insight into physical control of the interfacial shapes of droplets.

Abstract
The formation of polydopamine composite membranes at the water/air interface using different chemical strategies is reported. The use of either small molecules (urea, pyrocatechol) or polymers paves the way to understand which kind of compounds can be used for the formation of PDA-composite free-standing membranes produced at the water/air interface. On the basis of these screening results, we have found that alginate grafted with catechol groups allows the formation of robust free-standing films with asymmetric composition, stimuli-responsiveness, and self-healing properties. The stickiness of these membranes depends on the relative humidity, and its adhesion behavior on PDMS was characterized using the JKR method. Thus, alginate-catechol polydopamine films appear as a new class of PDA composites, mechanically robust through covalent cross-linking and based on fully biocompatible constituting partners. These results open the door to potential applications in the biomedical field.
