Highly Sensitive Photopolymer for Holographic Data Storage Containing Methacryl Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

Herein, via introducing eight methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Ma-POSS), we dramatically enhance the holographic performance of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer with excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, and neglectable volume shrinkage for holographic data storage, the photosensitivity, diffraction efficiency, and volume shrinkage reaching 1.47 cm/J, ∼75%, and ∼0.09%, respectively. Ma-POSS here dramatically enhances the photosensitivity ∼5.5 times, diffraction efficiency more than 50%, and suppressed the volume shrinkage over 4 times. Further analysis reveals that Ma-POSS obviously increased the molecular weight by grafting PMMA to be a star-shaped macromolecule. And the residual C═C of POSS-PMMA dramatically increased the photosensitivity. Moreover, the star-shaped POSS-PMMA acting as a plasticizer dramatically enhances the mechanical properties and so reduces the photoinduced volume shrinkage of PQ/PMMA. Finally, by the use of the POSS-PMMA/PQ in a collinear holography system, it appeared to be promising for a fast but low bit error rate in holographic information storage. The current study thence has not only successfully synthesized photopolymer materials with potential for highly sensitive holographic storage applications but also investigated the microphysical mechanism of the impact of Ma-POSS on the holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer and clarified the thermal- and photoreaction processes of the POSS-PMMA/PQ photopolymer.

Synthesis of (Hyper)Branched Monohydroxyl Alkoxysilane Oligomers toward Silanized Urethane Prepolymers

The aim of this work was the synthesis of (hyper)branched oligomers based on trialkoxysilane in various conditions and further application of them in order to modify the urethane prepolymers. Hydroxyl-terminated trialkoxysilane was used as a monomer for homo-condensation. It was obtained by reaction of 3-aminopropyl trialkoxysilane (APTES) with ethylene carbonate (EC). The reaction was based on the attack of amine at the carbonyl carbon atom followed by ring opening of the carbonate to give a urethane (carbamate) product. The next step was the condensation via substitution of ethoxy groups on silicon atom with the terminal hydroxyalkyl groups present in the primary product with the evolution of ethanol. Accordingly, the impact of temperature and type of catalyst on process efficiency was investigated. A quantitative analysis of reaction progress and products of the conversion of EC together with ethanol evolution was conducted by means of gas chromatography, which allowed us to determine the formation of monomeric product and, indirectly, of oligomeric products. It was found that at room temperature after 24 h, the majority of the monomeric product was isolated, whereas at elevated temperature in the presence of Ti-based catalyst, further condensation of the monomer into branched oligomers was preferred, and, moreover, the application of vacuum intensified that process. The obtained products were structurally characterized by ¹H and ²⁹Si NMR, MALDI-ToF and Gel Permeation Chromatography. Finally, two different alkoxysilane products, monomeric and oligomeric, were applied for modification of urethane prepolymer, forming silanized one (SPUR). The influence of the silanizing agent on the mechanical and thermal properties of the moisture-cured products was shown before and after additional conditioning in water.

Polymeric nano-carriers for on-demand delivery of genes via specific responses to stimuli

Polymeric nano-carriers have been developed as a most capable and feasible technology platform for gene therapy. As vehicles, polymeric nano-carriers are obliged to possess high gene loading capability, low immunogenicity, safety, and the ability to transfer various genetic materials into specific sites of target cells to express therapeutic proteins or block a process of gene expression. To this end, various types of polymeric nano-carriers have been prepared to release genes in response to stimuli such as pH, redox, enzymes, light and temperature. These stimulus-responsive nano-carriers exhibit high gene transfection efficiency and low cytotoxicity. In particular, dual- and multi-stimulus-responsive polymeric nano-carriers can respond to a combination of signals. Markedly, these combined responses take place either simultaneously or in a sequential manner. These dual-stimulus-responsive polymeric nano-carriers can control gene delivery with high gene transfection both in vitro and in vivo. In this review paper, we highlight the recent exciting developments in stimulus-responsive polymeric nano-carriers for gene delivery applications.

Hyperbranched Polycarbosiloxanes: Synthesis by Piers-Rubinsztajn Reaction and Application as Precursors to Magnetoceramics

Silicon-containing hyperbranched polymers (Si-HBPs) have drawn much attention due to their promising applications. However, the construction of Si-HBPs, especially those containing functional aromatic units in the branched backbones by the simple and efficient Piers-Rubinsztajn (P–R) reaction, has been rarely developed. Herein, a series of novel hyperbranched polycarbosiloxanes were prepared by the P–R reactions of methyl-, or phenyl-triethoxylsilane and three Si–H containing aromatic monomers, including 1,4-bis(dimethylsilyl)benzene, 4,4′-bis(dimethylsilyl)-1,1′-biphenyl and 1,1′-bis(dimethylsilyl)ferrocene, using B(C₆F₅)₃ as the catalyst for 0.5 h at room temperature. Their structures were fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, and ²⁹Si NMR. The molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The degrees of branching of these polymers were 0.69–0.89, which were calculated based on the quantitative ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy. For applications, the ferrocene-linked Si-HBP can be used as precursors to produce functional ceramics with good magnetizability after pyrolysis at elevated temperature.

Fabrication of Customized Nanogel Carriers From a UV-Triggered Dynamic Self-Assembly Strategy

Recent advances in self-assembled nanogel carriers have allowed precise design of hierarchical structures by a low-cost solution-phase approach. Typically, photochemical strategy on the tailor of morphology and dimension has emerged as a powerful tool, because light-trigger has exceptional advantages of an instant "on/off" function and spatiotemporal precision at arbitrary time. Herein, we report a tunable manipulation of sequentially morphological transition via a "living" thiol-disulfide exchange reaction from a UV-tailored hierarchical self-assembly strategy. By varying the irradiation time, the photochemical method can easily fabricate and guide a series of attractively architectural evolution in dilute aqueous solutions, by which the improving hydrophobicity and sensitive redox-responsiveness endowed these disulfide-linked nanoparticles with remarkable capacities of abundant encapsulation, effective separation, and controlled release of hydrophobic cargoes. Notably, once the exchange reaction is suspended at any point of time by removing the UV lamp, these active sites within the nanogel carriers are instantaneous deactivated and the correspondingly structural transformations are also not conducted any more. However, if the stable inert sites are reactivated as needed by turning on the UV light, the interrupting morphology evolution can continue its previous steps, which may provide a simple and novel approach to fabricating the desired self-assemblies in solutions. With regard to this advanced functionality, various nanogel carriers with customizable structures and properties have been yielded and screened for cancer therapy. Thus, this "living" controlled self-assembled method to program morphology evolution in situ is a universal strategy that will pave novel pathways for creating sequential shape-shifting and size-growing nanostructures and constructing uniform nanoscopic functional entities for advanced bio-applications.

A star-shaped POSS-containing polymer for cleaner leather processing

A water-based silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing polymer, POSS-PAA, was synthesized by using octavinyl-POSS (V-POSS) and acrylic acid (AA) via interfacial polymerization. The TEM of POSS-PAA showed that the polymer formed a core-shell structure in aqueous solution and was well-dispersed. The star-shaped POSS-PAA and linear PAA were both tanned with 3.5% chromium tanning agent, and leather hide was tanned with 3.5% chromium tanning agent as a control. The results showed that the shrinkage temperature of wet-blue leather treated by POSS-PAA was increased by 3.5 °C than that of the control. The thickening rate of the POSS-PAA treated wet-blue leather samples was increased by 21% and 96% than the linear PAA-treated leather and the control leather, respectively. The EDS results suggested that the POSS-PAA pre-treated leather had a higher chromium content than the others, and the chromium distribution from the leather flesh side to the grain side was uniform. Moreover, the Cr₂O₃ content in both the POSS-PAA and the PAA pre-treated tanning waste water was reduced by about 50%, compared to the control waste. The COD and BOD of the POSS-PAA pre-tanning waste were decreased compared to the others. Therefore, POSS-PAA appeared to be promising for promoting the development of cleaner leather production.

Dynamic and programmable morphology and size evolution via a living hierarchical self-assembly strategy

Recent advances in the preparation of shape-shifting and size-growing nanostructures are hot topics in development of nanoscience, because many intelligent functions are always relied on their shape and dimension. Here we report a tunable manipulation of sequential self-assembled transformation in situ via a hierarchical assembly strategy based on a living thiol-disulfide exchange reaction. By tailoring the external stimuli, the reactive points can be generated at the ends of initially unimolecular micelles, which subsequently drive the pre-assemblies to periodically proceed into the hierarchically micellar connection, axial growth, bending, and cyclization processes from nanoscopic assemblies to macroscopic particles. Of particular interest would be systems that acquired the shape control and size adjustment of self-assemblies after termination or reactivation of disulfide reshuffling reaction by regulating external stimuli whenever needed. Such a hierarchical strategy for self-assembled evolution is universally applicable not only for other disulfide-linked dendritic polymers but also for exploitation of biological applications.

pH-Mediated Fluorescent Polymer Particles and Gel from Hyperbranched Polyethylenimine and the Mechanism of Intrinsic Fluorescence

We report that fluorescence properties and morphology of hyperbranched polyethylenimine (hPEI) cross-linked with formaldehyde are highly dependent on the pH values of the cross-linking reaction. Under acidic and neutral conditions, water-soluble fluorescent copolymer particles (CPs) were produced. However, under basic conditions, white gels with weak fluorescence emission would be obtained. The water-soluble hPEI-formaldehyde (hPEI-F) CPs show strong intrinsic fluorescence without the conjugation to any classical fluorescent agents. By the combination of spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, the mechanism of fluorescence emission was discussed. We propose that the intrinsic fluorescence originates from the formation of a Schiff base in the cross-linking process between hPEI and formaldehyde. Schiff base bonds are the fluorescence-emitting moieties, and the compact structure of hPEI-F CPs plays an important role in their strong fluorescence emission. The exploration on fluorescence mechanism may provide a new strategy to prepare fluorescent polymer particles. In addition, the investigation shows that the hPEI-F CPs hold potential as a fluorescent probe for the detection of copper ions in aqueous media.

Effect of Topological Structures on the Self-Assembly Behavior of Supramolecular Amphiphiles

Three types of azobenzene-based telechelic guest polymers, PEG-azo, azo-PEG-azo, and PEG-azo4, were synthesized by a facile method. Subsequently, a series supramolecular amphiphiles with three distinct topological structures (hemitelechelic, ditelechelic, and quadritelechelic) were constructed through coupling with host polymer β-cyclodextrin-poly(l-lactide) (β-CD-PLLA) by combined host-guest complexation. Research on the self-assembly behavior of these amphiphiles demonstrated that the variation in self-assembly was tuned by the synergistic interaction of hydrophilicity and the curvature of the polymer chains, and very importantly, the topological structure of amphiphiles demonstrated effective control of the self-assembly behavior.

Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Photoresponsive Behavior of Tadpole-Shaped Azobenzene Polymers

Herein, we report a feasible method to prepare a tadpole-shaped PEG-POSS-(Azo)₇ polymer. The polymer self-assembled into a large vesicle in aqueous solution, undergoing reversible smooth-curling transformation responsive to UV and dark conditions. Incorporating POSS units into the azopolymer furnished quick trans-cis isomerization along a cubic orientation. The orientational isomerization formed some pores on the vesicular membrane and endowed the highly sensitive photoresponsive property. Encapsulation of various fluorescent dyes affected the hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio of self-assemblies, causing their morphological transition from vesicles to micelles. Response to UV irradiation, the quick trans-cis isomerization resulted in rapid release of the encapsulated dyes. The intriguing photoresponsive property renders this kind of tadpole-shaped POSS hybrid azopolymer a potential for application in controlled release of drug.

Microgel coating of magnetic nanoparticles via bienzyme-mediated free-radical polymerization for colorimetric detection of glucose

This study describes a new strategy for the fabrication of magnetic core-shell microgels by free-radical polymerization triggered by the cascade reaction of glucose oxidase (GOx) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The mild polymerization around the interface of the magnetic nanoparticles permits the mild coating of the microgel layer with excellent characteristics for various applications in biocatalysis and medical diagnostics, as well as in clinical fields. The immobilized bienzyme within the microgel has a largely retained activity relative to the non-immobilized one. The confining effect of the microgel and the well designed distance between the two enzymes can benefit the diffusion of intermediates to the HRP active site. The final microgels can be incontestably employed as sensitive biosensors for colorimetric glucose detection.

Facile Preparation of Hierarchical Structures Using Crystallization-Kinetics Driven Self-Assembly

Hierarchical structures (HSs) constructed by nanoparticle-based building blocks possess not only the properties of the primary building blocks but also collective properties of the assemblies. Here we report the facile preparation of hierarchical Ag nanoparticles/polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane molecule (POSS) hybrid branched structures within tens of seconds by using spin-coating and doctor-blade methods. An assembly mechanism mainly controlled by POSS-crystallization kinetics and space resistance of Ag nanoparticles toward the diffusion of POSS molecules was tentatively proposed. It was demonstrated as a universal method for the preparation of hierarchical hybrid branched structures on arbitrary substrates, as well as by using other different POSS and inorganic nanoparticles. As a demonstration, Ag hierarchical structures obtained by heat treatment exhibit excellent SERS performance with enhancement factors as high as on the order of 10(7), making them promising sensors for the detection of trace amount of analyte adsorbed on the surface. Two-dimensional SERS mapping was also demonstrated by using a direct imaging system with high mapping speed and high resolution. Moreover, the substrates with Ag hierarchical structures were used as a SERS sensor for in situ detection due to the excellent SERS performance and stability of the structures.
