Photoswitched Stereodivergent Synthesis of Allylic Sulfones

The present Letter demonstrates a photoswitched stereodivergent synthesis of allylic sulfones from sodium sulfinates, triphenylvinylphosphonium chloride, and (hetero)aromatic aldehydes in a single step. Mechanistically, cis-allylic sulfones, generated from the unstabilized ylide intermediates and aldehydes in situ, could be finally converted to trans-allylic sulfones via photochemical isomerization in the presence of a catalytic amount of bis(2-thienyl) ketone.

Mild and Selective Hydrogenation of Unsaturated Compounds Using Mn/Water as a Hydrogen Gas Source

A mild and highly selective reduction of alkenes and alkynes using Mn/water is described. The highly controlled generation of H2 allows the selective reduction of these compounds in the presence of labile functional groups under mild and environmentally acceptable conditions.

Recent advances in the selective semi-hydrogenation of alkyne to (E)-olefins

Considering the potential importance and upsurge in demand, the selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to (E)-olefins has attracted significant interest. This article highlights the recent advances in newer technologies and important methodologies directed to (E)-olefins from alkynes developed from 2015 to 2023. Notable features summarised include the catalyst or ligand design and control of product selectivity based on precious and nonprecious metal catalysts for semi-hydrogenation to (E)-olefins. Mechanistic studies for various catalytic transformations, including synthetic application to bioactive compounds, are summarised.

Photoinduced NiH Catalysis with Trialkylamines for the Stereodivergent Transfer Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes

We report a selectivity-switchable nickel hydride-catalyzed methodology that enables the stereocontrolled semi-reduction of internal alkynes to E- or Z-alkenes under very mild conditions. The proposed transfer semi-hydrogenation process involves the use of a dual nickel/photoredox catalytic system and triethylamine, not only as a sacrificial reductant, but also as a source of hydrogen atoms. Mechanistic studies revealed a pathway involving photo-induced generation of nickel hydride, syn-hydronickelation of alkyne, and alkenylnickel isomerization as key steps. Remarkably, mechanistic experiments indicate that the control of the stereoselectivity is not ensuing from a post-reduction alkene photoisomerization under our conditions. Instead, we demonstrate that the stereoselectivity of the reaction is dependent on the rate of a final protonolysis step which can be tuned by adjusting the pKa of an alcohol additive.

H2O as the Hydrogen Donor: Stereo-Selective Synthesis of E- and Z-Alkenes by Palladium-Catalyzed Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

It is very desirable to develop a facile controllable method for selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes with a cheap and safe hydrogen donor but remains a big challenge. H₂O is one of the best choices of the transfer hydrogenation agent of the world, and the development of methods for synthesizing E- and Z-alkenes using H₂O as the hydrogen source is worthwhile. In this article, a palladium-catalyzed synthesis of E- and Z-alkenes from alkynes using H₂O as the hydrogenation agent was reported. The use of di-tert-butylphosphinous chloride (t-Bu₂PCl) and triethanolamine/sodium acetate (TEOA/NaOAc) was essential for the stereo-selective semihydrogenation of alkynes. The general applicability of this procedure was highlighted by the synthesis of more than 48 alkenes, with good yields and high stereoselectivities.

Single-Atom Nickel on Carbon Nitride Photocatalyst Achieves Semihydrogenation of Alkynes with Water Protons via Monovalent Nickel

Prospects in light-driven water activation have prompted rapid progress in hydrogenation reactions. We describe a Ni²⁺ -N₄ site built on carbon nitride for catalyzed semihydrogenation of alkynes, with water supplying protons, powered by visible-light irradiation. Importantly, the photocatalytic approach developed here enabled access to diverse deuterated alkenes in D₂ O with excellent deuterium incorporation. Under visible-light irradiation, evolution of a four-coordinate Ni²⁺ species into a three-coordinate Ni⁺ species was spectroscopically identified. In combination with theoretical calculations, the photo-evolved Ni⁺ is posited as HO-Ni⁺ -N₂ with an uncoordinated, protonated pyridinic nitrogen, formed by coupled Ni²⁺ reduction and water dissociation. The paired Ni-N prompts hydrogen liberation from water, and it renders desorption of alkene preferred over further hydrogenation to alkane, ensuring excellent semihydrogenation selectivity.

Controlled Selectivity through Reversible Inhibition of the Catalyst: Stereodivergent Semihydrogenation of Alkynes

Catalytic semihydrogenation of internal alkynes using H2 is an attractive atom-economical route to various alkenes, and its stereocontrol has received widespread attention, both in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyses. Herein, a novel strategy is introduced, whereby a poisoning catalytic thiol is employed as a reversible inhibitor of a ruthenium catalyst, resulting in a controllable H2-based semihydrogenation of internal alkynes. Both (E)- and (Z)-alkenes were obtained efficiently and highly selectively, under very mild conditions, using a single homogeneous acridine-based ruthenium pincer catalyst. Mechanistic studies indicate that the (Z)-alkene is the reaction intermediate leading to the (E)-alkene and that the addition of a catalytic amount of bidentate thiol impedes the Z/E isomerization step by forming stable ruthenium thiol(ate) complexes, while still allowing the main hydrogenation reaction to proceed. Thus, the absence or presence of catalytic thiol controls the stereoselectivity of this alkyne semihydrogenation, affording either the (E)-isomer as the final product or halting the reaction at the (Z)-intermediate. The developed system, which is also applied to the controllable isomerization of a terminal alkene, demonstrates how metal catalysis with switchable selectivity can be achieved by reversible inhibition of the catalyst with a simple auxiliary additive.

Aza-Peterson Olefinations: Rapid Synthesis of (E)-Alkenes

An aza-Peterson olefination methodology to access 1,3-dienes and stilbene derivatives from the corresponding allyl- or benzyltrimethylsilane is described. Silanes can be deprotonated using Schlosser’s base and added to N-phenyl imines or ketones to directly give the desired products in high yields.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Simultaneous Olefin Hydrogenation and Alcohol Oxidation over Crystalline Porous Polymeric Carbon Nitride

Booming of photocatalytic water splitting technology (PWST) opens a new avenue for the sustainable synthesis of high-value-added hydrogenated and oxidized fine chemicals, in which the design of efficient semiconductors for the in-situ and synergistic utilization of photogenerated redox centers are key roles. Herein, a porous polymeric carbon nitride (PPCN) with a crystalline backbone was constructed for visible light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen generation by photoexcited electrons, followed by in-situ utilization for olefin hydrogenation. Simultaneously, various alcohols were selectively transformed to valuable aldehydes or ketones by photoexcited holes. The porosity of PPCN provided it with a large surface area and a short transfer path for photogenerated carriers from the bulk to the surface, and the crystalline structure facilitated photogenerated charge transfer and separation, thus enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. High reactivity and selectivity, good functionality tolerance, and broad reaction scope were achieved by this concerted photocatalysis system. The results contribute to the development of highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts and synergistic redox reaction systems based on PWST for high-value-added fine chemical production.

A Simple Nickel Catalyst Enabling an E-Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation

Stereoselective alkyne semihydrogenations are attractive approaches to alkenes, which are key building blocks for synthesis. With regards to the most atom-economic reducing agent dihydrogen (H2 ), only few catalysts for the challenging E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation have been disclosed, each with a unique substrate scope profile. Here, we show that a commercially available nickel catalyst facilitates the E-selective alkyne semihydrogenation of a wide variety of substituted internal alkynes. This results in a simple and broadly applicable overall protocol to stereoselectively access E-alkenes employing H2 , which could serve as a general method for synthesis.

Photoinitiated carbonyl-metathesis: deoxygenative reductive olefination of aromatic aldehydes via photoredox catalysis

Carbonyl–carbonyl olefination, known as McMurry reaction, represents a powerful strategy for the construction of olefins.

Carbonyl–carbonyl olefination, known as McMurry reaction, represents a powerful strategy for the construction of olefins. However, catalytic variants that directly couple two carbonyl groups in a single reaction are less explored. Here, we report a photoredox-catalysis that uses B₂pin₂ as terminal reductant and oxygen trap allowing for deoxygenative olefination of aromatic aldehydes under mild conditions. This strategy provides access to a diverse range of symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkenes with moderate to high yield (up to 83%) and functional-group tolerance. To follow the reaction pathway, a series of experiments were conducted including radical inhibition, deuterium labelling, fluorescence quenching and cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, NMR studies and DFT calculations were combined to detect and analyze three active intermediates: a cyclic three-membered anionic species, an α-oxyboryl carbanion and a 1,1-benzyldiboronate ester. Based on these results, we propose a mechanism for the C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> C bond generation involving a sequential radical borylation, “bora-Brook” rearrangement, B₂pin₂-mediated deoxygenation and a boron-Wittig process.

Controllable deuteration of halogenated compounds by photocatalytic D2O splitting

Deuterium labeling is of great value in organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry. However, the state-of-the-art C–H/C–D exchange using noble metal catalysts or strong bases/acids suffers from poor functional group tolerances, poor selectivity and lack of scope for generating molecular complexity. Herein, we demonstrate the deuteration of halides using heavy water as the deuteration reagent and porous CdSe nanosheets as the catalyst. The deuteration mechanism involves the generation of highly active carbon and deuterium radicals via photoinduced electron transfer from CdSe to the substrates, followed by tandem radicals coupling process, which is mechanistically distinct from the traditional methods involving deuterium cations or anions. Our deuteration strategy shows better selectivity and functional group tolerances than current C–H/C–D exchange methods. Extending the synthetic scope, deuterated boronic acids, halides, alkynes, and aldehydes can be used as synthons in Suzuki coupling, Click reaction, C–H bond insertion reaction etc. for the synthesis of complex deuterated molecules.

Dual cobalt-copper light-driven catalytic reduction of aldehydes and aromatic ketones in aqueous media

A dual catalytic system based on earth-abundant elements reduces aromatic ketones and aldehydes to alcohols in aqueous media under visible light. An unprecedented selectivity for the reduction of aromatic ketones versus aliphatic aldehydes is reported.

We present an efficient, general, fast, and robust light-driven methodology based on earth-abundant elements to reduce aryl ketones, and both aryl and aliphatic aldehydes (up to 1400 TON). The catalytic system consists of a robust and well-defined aminopyridyl cobalt complex active for photocatalytic water reduction and the [Cu(bathocuproine)(Xantphos)](PF₆) photoredox catalyst. The dual cobalt–copper system uses visible light as the driving-force and H₂O and an electron donor (Et₃N or ⁱPr₂EtN) as the hydride source. The catalytic system operates in aqueous mixtures (80–60% water) with high selectivity towards the reduction of organic substrates (>2000) vs. water reduction, and tolerates O₂. High selectivity towards the hydrogenation of aryl ketones is observed in the presence of terminal olefins, aliphatic ketones, and alkynes. Remarkably, the catalytic system also shows unique selectivity for the reduction of acetophenone in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes. The catalytic system provides a simple and convenient method to obtain α,β-deuterated alcohols. Both the observed reactivity and the DFT modelling support a common cobalt hydride intermediate. The DFT modelled energy profile for the [Co–H] nucleophilic attack to acetophenone and water rationalises the competence of [Co^II–H] to reduce acetophenone in the presence of water. Mechanistic studies suggest alternative mechanisms depending on the redox potential of the substrate. These results show the potential of the water reduction catalyst [Co(OTf)(Py₂^Tstacn)](OTf) (1), (Py₂^Tstacn = 1,4-di(picolyl)-7-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate anion) to develop light-driven selective organic transformations and fine solar chemicals.

PdPt Alloy Nanocatalysts Supported on TiO2 : Maneuvering Metal-Hydrogen Interactions for Light-Driven and Water-Donating Selective Alkyne Semihydrogenation

Low power consumption and minimal potential hazards are ultimate goals for the modern development of chemical manufacturing; however, it often reduces the selectivity of chemical reactions by implementing a new reaction system. A nanocatalyst design is reported for achieving efficient and selective alkyne semihydrogenation through the photocatalytic hydrogen transfer from water, which avoids the use of a heat source and explosive H₂ . The PdPt catalytic sites that are implemented on the TiO₂ photocatalyst hold the key to achieving both high activity and selectivity. As compared with pure Pd or Pt, the alloy cocatalysts can better harness H diffusion/desorption for selective semihydrogenation as well as suppress competitive H₂ evolution. This work opens up new possibilities for green and selective alkyne semihydrogenation and highlights the importance of lattice engineering to catalytic selectivity.

Visible-Light Photocatalytic Aerobic Annulation for the Green Synthesis of Pyrazoles

A selective and high yielding synthesis of polysubstituted pyrazoles through a VLPC (visible light photoredox catalysis)-promoted reaction of hydrazine with Michael acceptors is reported. The method employs very mild reaction conditions and uses air as the terminal oxidant, which makes the process environmentally benign. Different types of Michael acceptors with various substituents can undergo the reaction to afford corresponding pyrazoles in good to excellent yields. The reaction is proposed to go through VLPC-promoted oxidation of hydrazine to diazene followed by its addition to Michael acceptors, other than the conventional condensation of hydrazine with a carbonyl.
