Synthesis of a novel magnetic calcium-rich biochar nanocomposite for efficient removal of phosphate from aqueous solution

Phosphorus (P) scarcity and eutrophication have triggered the development of new materials for P recovery. In this work, a novel magnetic calcium-rich biochar nanocomposite (MCRB) was prepared through co-precipitation of crab shell derived biochar, Fe2+ and Fe3+. Characteristics of the material demonstrated that the MCRB was rich in calcite and that the Fe3O4 NPs with a diameter range of 18-22 nanometers were uniformly adhered on the biochar surface by strong ether linking (C-O-Fe). Batch tests demonstrated that the removal of P was pH dependent with an optimal pH of 3-7. The MCRB exhibited a superior P removal performance, with a maximum removal capacity of 105.6 mg g-1, which was even higher than the majority lanthanum containing compounds. Study of the removal mechanisms revealed that the P removal by MCRB involved the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAP-Ca5(PO4)3OH), electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. The recyclability test demonstrated that a certain level (approximately 60%) was still maintained even after the six adsorption-desorption process, suggesting that MCRB is a promising material for P removal from wastewater.

Sustainable wastewater purification with crab shell-derived biochar: Advanced machine learning modeling & experimental analysis

Detoxifying ecologically persistent dyes is vital for environmental and human well-being. Herein, crabshell waste is transformed into porous carbon (CB900) through pyrolysis, achieving a remarkable removal rate of 90.5% (CR-RR) and adsorption capacity (∼256.36 mg g-1, qCR). Employing XGBoost modeling, with a robust R2 ∼0.996, proved its superiority over others in predicting CR adsorption. PSO-XGB optimization led to an optimal configuration: 0.051 g adsorbent, 460.56 mg L-1 CR concentration, pH 3.16, and a 94.01 min contact time, resulting in 68.39% CR-RR and 822.15 mg g-1 qCR, simultaneously; sensitivity analysis unveiled the pivotal role of pH and adsorbent dose. CB900 exhibited physical, spontaneous, endothermic following both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Remarkably, CB900 effectively eliminated various contaminants, including chromium and sulfasalazine antibiotic. Pilot-scale CB900 production cost via pyrolysis was $8.5/kg, a fraction of commercial powdered activated carbon, underscoring its economic viability and potential as a sustainable solution for the elimination of toxic contaminants from aqueous environments.

Nitrogen-rich carbon composite fabricated from waste shrimp shells for highly efficient oxo-vanadate adsorption-coupled reduction

Protein, calcium carbonate, and chitin are abundant in shrimp shells. In this study, chemical treatment followed by hydrothermal carbonization was used to synthesize the nitrogen-rich hydrochar (HSHC) from shrimp shells. The untreated hydrochar exhibited a higher amount of calcium (25.37%) and less amount of nitrogen (2.68%) with alkaline pH (9.1). Interestingly chemical pre-treatment on shrimp shells boosted the nitrogen content to 6.81% and eliminated the calcium while controlling the pH to 6.4, which was beneficial for oxo-vanadate removal. The HSHC achieved vanadium(V) adsorption capacity of 21.20 mg/g at an optimal solution pH of 3.0, whereas the pristine hydrochar performed poorly (0.66 mg/g). The abundance of oxygen and nitrogen-based functional groups that developed through the chemical treatment resulted in improved adsorption coupled reduction performance of HSHC. This study proposed an inexpensive and environmentally friendly method for converting waste shrimp shells into value-added adsorbent.

Nanochitin: Chemistry, Structure, Assembly, and Applications

Chitin, a fascinating biopolymer found in living organisms, fulfills current demands of availability, sustainability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, functionality, and renewability. A feature of chitin is its ability to structure into hierarchical assemblies, spanning the nano- and macroscales, imparting toughness and resistance (chemical, biological, among others) to multicomponent materials as well as adding adaptability, tunability, and versatility. Retaining the inherent structural characteristics of chitin and its colloidal features in dispersed media has been central to its use, considering it as a building block for the construction of emerging materials. Top-down chitin designs have been reported and differentiate from the traditional molecular-level, bottom-up synthesis and assembly for material development. Such topics are the focus of this Review, which also covers the origins and biological characteristics of chitin and their influence on the morphological and physical-chemical properties. We discuss recent achievements in the isolation, deconstruction, and fractionation of chitin nanostructures of varying axial aspects (nanofibrils and nanorods) along with methods for their modification and assembly into functional materials. We highlight the role of nanochitin in its native architecture and as a component of materials subjected to multiscale interactions, leading to highly dynamic and functional structures. We introduce the most recent advances in the applications of nanochitin-derived materials and industrialization efforts, following green manufacturing principles. Finally, we offer a critical perspective about the adoption of nanochitin in the context of advanced, sustainable materials.

A review on native well-preserved chitin nanofibrils for materials of high mechanical performance

Novel chitin nanofibrils (ChNF) demonstrate excellent mechanical properties due to a long and extended polymer conformation. The current study highlights the importance of preserving ChNFs for stronger nanomaterials. Various chitin sources - crab, lobster, shrimp, squid pen, mushrooms, and insects have been reviewed. We have discussed preparation protocols and the physical properties of ChNF and presented the mechanical performance of nanomaterials. ChNF close to the native state uses fewer chemicals for treatment and shows a higher molar mass, degree of acetylation, crystallinity index, micrometer length, and a smaller diameter (3 nm), making them cheap, eco-friendly, and competitive to cellulose or synthetic fibrils. A highly acetylated or partially deacetylated ChNF forms a stable colloidal suspension, and it is possible to prepare from it strong films, hydrogels, aerogels, foams, polymer matrix nanocomposites, and microfibers. Moreover, it is possible to regenerate, functionalize, or cross-link the ChNFs to improve nanomaterials' mechanical performance. The preparation protocols remain the key to these achievements. However, the chemical techniques are not friendly ecologically and may hydrolytically degrade the chitin. The biological processes using enzymes or microorganisms are much better but still inefficient. Besides, the processing time limits the rapid preparation of the fibrils in the long-term perspective.

Nanomaterials Derived from Fungal Sources-Is It the New Hype?

Greener alternatives to synthetic polymers are constantly being investigated and sought after. Chitin is a natural polysaccharide that gives structural support to crustacean shells, insect exoskeletons, and fungal cell walls. Like cellulose, chitin resides in nanosized structural elements that can be isolated as nanofibers and nanocrystals by various top-down approaches, targeted at disintegrating the native construct. Chitin has, however, been largely overshadowed by cellulose when discussing the materials aspects of the nanosized components. This Perspective presents a thorough overview of chitin-related materials research with an analytical focus on nanocomposites and nanopapers. The red line running through the text emphasizes the use of fungal chitin that represents several advantages over the more popular crustacean sources, particularly in terms of nanofiber isolation from the native matrix. In addition, many β-glucans are preserved in chitin upon its isolation from the fungal matrix, enabling new horizons for various engineering solutions.

Biopolymer nanofibrils: structure, modeling, preparation, and applications

Biopolymer nanofibrils exhibit exceptional mechanical properties with a unique combination of strength and toughness, while also presenting biological functions that interact with the surrounding environment. These features of biopolymer nanofibrils profit from their hierarchical structures that spun angstrom to hundreds of nanometer scales. To maintain these unique structural features and to directly utilize these natural supramolecular assemblies, a variety of new methods have been developed to produce biopolymer nanofibrils. In particular, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs), silk nanofibrils (SNFs) and collagen nanofibrils (CoNFs), as the four most abundant biopolymer nanofibrils on earth, have been the focus of research in recent years due to their renewable features, wide availability, low-cost, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. A series of top-down and bottom-up strategies have been accessed to exfoliate and regenerate these nanofibrils for versatile advanced applications. In this review, we first summarize the structures of biopolymer nanofibrils in nature and outline their related computational models with the aim of disclosing fundamental structure-property relationships in biological materials. Then, we discuss the underlying methods used for the preparation of CNFs, ChNFs, SNF and CoNFs, and discuss emerging applications for these biopolymer nanofibrils.

Calcium-rich biochar from the pyrolysis of crab shell for phosphorus removal

Calcium-rich biochars (CRB) prepared through pyrolysis of crab shell at various temperatures were characterized for physicochemical properties and P removal potential. Elemental analysis showed that CRB was rich in calcium (22.91%-36.14%), while poor in carbon (25.21%-9.08%). FTIR, XRD and TG analyses showed that calcite-based CRB was prepared at temperature ≤600 °C, while lime-based CRB was prepared at temperature ≥700 °C. Phosphorus removal experiment showed that P removal efficiencies in 80 mg P/L phosphate solution and biogas effluent ranged from 26% to 11%, respectively, to about 100% and 63%, respectively, depending on the pyrolysis temperature of the resulting biochar. Specifically, compared to common used CaCO₃ and Ca(OH)₂, P removal potential of calcite-based CRB was much higher than that of CaCO₃; while that of lime-based CRB was close to that of Ca(OH)₂. These results suggested that CRB was competent for P removal/recovery from wastewater.

Magnetofluorescent Carbon Dots Derived from Crab Shell for Targeted Dual-Modality Bioimaging and Drug Delivery

We propose a one-pot microwave-assisted pyrolysis method for fabrication of magnetofluorescent carbon quantum dots (MFCQDs), using a combination of waste crab shell and three different transition-metal ions, Gd³⁺, Mn²⁺, and Eu³⁺, referred to as Gd@CQDs, Mn@CQDs, and Eu@CQDs, respectively. Chitin from waste crab shell acted not only as a carbon source but also as a chelating ligand to form complexes with transition-metal ions. Gd@CQDs exhibited a high r₁ relaxivity of 4.78 mM^-1·s^-1 and a low r₂/r₁ ratio of 1.33, suggesting that they show excellent potential as a T₁ contrast agent. Mn@CQDs and Eu@CQDs showed high r₂ relaxivity values of 140.7 and 28.32 mM^-1·s^-1, respectively, suggesting their potential for use as T₂ contrast agents. Further conjugation of Gd@CQDs with folic acid (FA) enabled specific targeting to folate receptor-positive HeLa cells, as confirmed via in vitro magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging. Doxorubicin (DOX) was selected as a model drug for conjugation with FA-Gd@CQDs. The as-prepared nanocomposites showed significantly higher cytotoxicity toward HeLa cells than free DOX. No apparent cytotoxicity was observed in vivo (zebrafish embryos) or in vitro (cell viability), suggesting that MFCQDs show potential for development as diagnostic probes or theranostic agents.

Transcriptome analysis on the exoskeleton formation in early developmetal stages and reconstruction scenario in growth-moulting in Litopenaeus vannamei

Exoskeleton construction is an important issue in shrimp. To better understand the molecular mechanism of exoskeleton formation, development and reconstruction, the transcriptome of the entire developmental process in Litopenaeus vannamei, including nine early developmental stages and eight adult-moulting stages, was sequenced and analysed using Illumina RNA-seq technology. A total of 117,539 unigenes were obtained, with 41.2% unigenes predicting the full-length coding sequence. Gene Ontology, Clusters of Orthologous Group (COG), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis and functional annotation of all unigenes gave a better understanding of the exoskeleton developmental process in L. vannamei. As a result, more than six hundred unigenes related to exoskeleton development were identified both in the early developmental stages and adult-moulting. A cascade of sequential expression events of exoskeleton-related genes were summarized, including exoskeleton formation, regulation, synthesis, degradation, mineral absorption/reabsorption, calcification and hardening. This new insight on major transcriptional events provide a deep understanding for exoskeleton formation and reconstruction in L. vannamei. In conclusion, this is the first study that characterized the integrated transcriptomic profiles cover the entire exoskeleton development from zygote to adult-moulting in a crustacean, and these findings will serve as significant references for exoskeleton developmental biology and aquaculture research.

Protein/CaCO₃/Chitin Nanofiber Complex Prepared from Crab Shells by Simple Mechanical Treatment and Its Effect on Plant Growth

A protein/CaCO₃/chitin nanofiber complex was prepared from crab shells by a simple mechanical treatment with a high-pressure water-jet (HPWJ) system. The preparation process did not involve chemical treatments, such as removal of protein and calcium carbonate with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, respectively. Thus, it was economically and environmentally friendly. The nanofibers obtained had uniform width and dispersed homogeneously in water. Nanofibers were characterized in morphology, transparency, and viscosity. Results indicated that the shell was mostly disintegrated into nanofibers at above five cycles of the HPWJ system. The chemical structure of the nanofiber was maintained even after extensive mechanical treatments. Subsequently, the nanofiber complex was found to improve the growth of tomatoes in a hydroponics system, suggesting the mechanical treatments efficiently released minerals into the system. The homogeneous dispersion of the nanofiber complex enabled easier application as a fertilizer compared to the crab shell flakes.
