Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) play a crucial role in the design of novel materials. The ionic nature of ILs provides numerous advantages in drug delivery, acting as a green solvent or active ingredient to enhance the solubility, permeability, and binding efficiency of drugs. They could also function as a structuring agent in the development of nano/micro particles for drug delivery, including micelles, vesicles, gels, emulsion, and more. This review summarize the ILs and IL-based gel structures with their advanced drug delivery applications. The first part of review focuses on the role of ILs in drug formulation and the applications of ILs in drug delivery. The second part of review offers a comprehensive overview of recent drug delivery applications of IL-based gel. It aims to offer new perspectives and attract more attention to open up new avenues in the biomedical applications of ILs and IL-based gels.

Abstract
How to fabricate multiresponse worm-like micelles (WLMs) and the corresponding green disposal is still challenging. A strategy of fabricating the surfactant-based WLMs that can respond simultaneously to light, heat, and pH was developed by using triple-response sodium (E)-2-(4-(phenyldiazenyl)phenoxy) acetate (AzoNa) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE)-hydrolyzable palmitoylcholine bromide (PCB). Under the optimal molar ratio of AzoNa to PCB (∼0.5), the PCB-AzoNa WLMs formed with a maximum zero-shear viscosity (η0) value of about 2.1 × 105 mPa·s and an average diameter (D) of 4.1 ± 0.6 nm under conditions of 37 °C and pH 7.4. After irradiated with 365 nm UV light for 80 min, AzoNa underwent the trans-to-cis transition, by which the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was destroyed; however, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be reformed upon the irradiation of 455 nm blue light for 18 h or heating at 70 °C for 45 min due to the cis-to-trans isomerization of AzoNa. When pH changed from 7.4 to 2.0, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was destroyed rapidly because of the conversion of AzoNa to the acid form of AzoH, whereas the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be reformed after pH was restored to 7.4. The multiple responsiveness of the PCB-AzoNa WLMs was reversible due to the reversible trans-cis isomerization or protonation of AzoNa. Besides, the average D values of light, heat, and pH-regenerated PCB-AzoNa WLMs were 4.2 ± 0.7, 4.0 ± 0.7, and 4.0 ± 0.6 nm, respectively. Finally, the PCB-AzoNa WLMs could be enzymatically disorganized under conditions of 37 °C and pH 7.4 due to the BChE-catalyzed hydrolysis of PCB. We hope that the fabrication and enzymatic disorganization strategies for PCB-based multiresponse WLMs presented here will find potential applications in the formulation of antimicrobial household and personal care products containing PCB and in the green disposal of viscous waste containing PCB.

Abstract
The viscoelasticity of wormlike micelles composed of ionic surfactants typically shows an exponential decrease with increasing temperature, which limits their application in relatively high-temperature (>90.0 °C) oilfields and the synthesis of functional materials as supramolecular templates at high temperatures. In this work, a series of imidazolium gemini surfactants, 1,9-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(3-alkyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) bromide ([Cn-2-Cnim]Br2, n = 12, 14, 16, 18, 20), were synthesized. Their surface activities and aggregation behaviors in water were studied by electrical conductivity, rheology, polarization optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, ζ potential, and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. [C12-2-C12im]Br2 and [C14-2-C14im]Br2 mainly precipitate in water. [Cn-2-Cnim]Br2 (n = 16, 18, 20) forms lamellar liquid crystals over a large range of concentrations at low temperatures. With the increase of temperature, the lamellar liquid crystals transit to wormlike micelles. Interestingly, the viscoelasticity of the three wormlike micelles first increases to the maximum and then decreases with increasing temperature. These wormlike micelles without additives retain high viscoelasticity up to 90.0 °C or above. With the increase of the alkyl chain length of the surfactants, the transition temperature of lamellar liquid crystal to wormlike micelles and the disintegration temperature of wormlike micelles increase. The unusual increase of the viscoelasticity of wormlike micelles was due to the desorption of weakly bound counterions and the extension of the long hydrophobic chains of surfactants at high temperatures.

Abstract
The effect of the hydrocarbon chain length of ionic liquid surfactants 1-hexadecyl-3-alkyl imidazolium bromide [C16imCn]Br (n = 1-16) on their aggregation behavior with polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Brij 30) in aqueous solution was inspected. The rheological behavior, thermal properties, and microstructures of the different samples were studied using freeze-fractured electron microscopy. The interactions between [C16imCn]Br and Brij 30 were studied using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and theoretical simulation. With the addition of Brij 30, the rodlike micelles of [C16imCn]Br (n = 1, 2, 4, and 6) transition into wormlike micelles. The effects of the molar ratio of Brij 30 and [C16imCn]Br and the hydrocarbon chain length of [C16imCn]Br on the Brij 30/[C16imCn]Br (n = 1, 2, 4, and 6) wormlike micelles were studied. When Brij 30 was mixed with the rodlike micelles of [C16imC8]Br, the Brij 30/[C16imC8]Br mixtures form wormlike micelles at low Brij 30 concentration and gels at high Brij 30 concentration. The [C16imCn]Br (n = 10, 12, 14, and 16) rodlike micelles were induced by Brij 30 to turn into the Brij 30/[C16imCn]Br gels. The effect of the [C16imCn]Br hydrocarbon chain length on their rodlike micelles with the addition of Brij 30 is also theoretically discussed.

Abstract
Wormlike micelles (or reverse wormlike micelles) are flexible cylindrical chains that are normally formed in water (or a nonpolar organic solvent) at 25.0 °C or above; the formation of wormlike micelles at lower temperatures is rare. Here, we have reported wormlike micelles formed at low temperature using an ionic liquid surfactant (1-octadecyl-3-nonyl imidazolium bromide) in polar organic solvents (including 1,3-propanediol, 1,2-propylene glycol, N,N-dimethylformamide, and glycerol/1,2-propylene glycol mixture) in the absence of any additives. The viscoelasticity and morphology of the wormlike micelles were studied using rheology, small-angle X-ray scattering, and cryo-transmission electron microscopy. The viscoelastic properties of the wormlike micelles in polar solvents are affected by the solvent type (or the weight ratio of glycerol to 1,2-propylene glycol), surfactant concentration, and temperature. Moreover, the G' and G'' crossover twice in the dynamic curves, which is different from the case in water. The first crossover (at low frequency) corresponds to the relaxation time for the alkyl chains to disentangle from the transient network, and the second crossover (at high frequency) is related to the segmental motion of the chains. Furthermore, the tribological performance of these wormlike micelles is investigated at low temperature. It is found that the protective film (formed by the physical adhesion of the wormlike micelles on the surface of friction disk pair) and the tribochemical reaction together lead to good antifriction and antiwear performance, which indicates the application prospects of these wormlike micelles in low-temperature lubrication.

Abstract
"Smart" fluids displaying large changes in their rheological properties in response to external stimuli have been of great interest in recent years. For example, "smart" wormlike micelles (WLMs) that respond to pH can be readily formulated by combining a cationic surfactant such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with an aromatic compound such as 1,2-dihydroxybenzene (DHB). Here, we show that a pH-responsive aqueous formulation as mentioned above can be simultaneously made responsive to ultraviolet (UV) light by incorporating a photoacid generator (PAG) into the system. A commercially available PAG, diphenyliodonium-2-carboxylate, is used here. Upon exposure to UV light, this PAG irreversibly photolyzes into iodobenzene (IB) and benzoic acid (BA), with the formation of BA, leading to a drop in pH. WLMs formed by mixtures of CTAB, DHB, and the PAG are systematically characterized before and after UV irradiation. As the PAG photolyzes, an increase in the viscosity of WLMs occurs by a factor of 1000. We show that the ratio of the zero-shear viscosity η0 (after UV/before UV) depends on the initial pH of the sample. The UV-induced increase in η0 can be attributed to the growth of WLMs in solution, which in turn is influenced by both the ionization state of DHB and the presence of IB and BA.

Abstract
The influence of the alkyl chain length of the ionic liquid surfactants 1-hexadecyl-3-alkyl imidazolium bromide [C16imCn]Br (n = 2-16) on their aggregation behavior with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in water was studied. The rheological properties, thermostability, and microstructure of the samples were characterized via a combination of rheology, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, polarization optical microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Upon the addition of SDS, the [C16imCn]Br (n = 2, 4, 6) rodlike micelles transit into the gels with high water content. The effects of molar ratio and alkyl chain length on the viscoelasticity and thermal stability of the SDS/[C16imCn]Br (n = 2, 4, 6) gels were studied. However, the [C16imCn]Br (n = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) rodlike micelles precipitate with the addition of SDS. The [C16imCn]Br (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) gels transit to the rodlike micelles with the proper addition of SDS. The mechanism of the influence of the alkyl chain length of the [C16imCn]Br on their aggregation behavior with SDS was proposed.

Abstract
In this work, a novel active-inactive material interdigitated aggregates (AIMIAs) structure was constructed by self-assembled wormlike micelles (WLMs) and one-dimensional cellulose nanofiber (CNF). The rheological behaviors and microstructures of the AIMIA systems with different CNF concentrations were investigated by rheometer, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscope. Some key parameters, including zero-shear viscosity (η0), relaxing time (τR), and contour length ( L), were calculated to analyze the changes in the properties of different systems. Meanwhile, a proper mechanism describing the interaction between CNF and WLMs was proposed. Through this work, we expect to deepen the understanding of the AIMIAs structure and widen its application.

Abstract
Stimulus-responsive surfactant wormlike micelles have been widely investigated in the past decade. In this article, we report light and CO2/N2 dual stimuli-responsive wormlike micelles using a zwitterionic surfactant (SDAP) and an azobenzene surfactant (C4AzoC6N). In contrast to traditional amine-containing wormlike micelles, a fast and reversible CO2-triggered thinning behavior was observed. The system can also be reversibly switched by UV irradiation. The dual stimuli-responsive wormlike micelles (C4AzoC6N-SDAP) may have applications in the development of functional materials for microfluidics and analytical chemistry.

Abstract
A dual-stimuli responsive, wormlike micelle system was developed using a switchable selenium-containing surfactant, dihendecylcarboxylic acid sodium selenide (C11-Se-C11), and a commercially available surfactant, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The solution showed a viscoelastic characteristic at low shear frequencies, and the synergism was significant when the concentrations of CTAB and C11-Se-C11 were 145 mM and 25 mM, respectively. Additionally, the system was fast and reversibly responded to CO2 and redox dual stimuli, and it showed a circulatory gel/sol transition, which reflected changes in the self-assembly from entangled worms to rodlike micelles. Moreover, these transitions were switchable at least three times. The dual responsiveness of the solution allowed for precise control of the wormlike micelles, and these micelles will have a wide range of applications in the development of functional materials for pharmaceutical or biomedical materials.

Abstract
CO2/N2 and light dual stimuli-responsive worm-like micelles (WLMs) were obtained by addition of a relatively small amount of a switchable surfactant, 4-butyl-4'-(4-N,N-dimethylhexyloxy-amine) azobenzene bicarbonate (AZO-B6-CO2), sensitive to the same triggers to a binary aqueous solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal).

Abstract
Wormlike micelles were successfully fabricated by the self-assembly of a single-tailed zwitterionic surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL), 3-(1-hexadecyl-3-imidazolio) propanesulfonate β-naphthalene sulfonate (C16IPS-Nsa), in aqueous solutions without any additives. With increasing zwitterionic SAIL concentration, spontaneous transition from micelles to wormlike micelles and then a hexagonal phase occurs. Interestingly, the wormlike micelles are closed, stretched and directionally arranged, which was rarely found in previous research studies. This kind of wormlike micelle is useful to serve as novel soft template in the synthesis of functional materials. 1H NMR illustrated that the introduced π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions originated from the hydrophobic aromatic counterions are responsible for the structural transformation. Density functional theory (DFT) simulated the optimum configuration of C16IPS-Nsa and calculated the interaction energy of C16IPS-Nsa-H2O is 39.6 kJ mol-1. This work paves the way for regulating the self-assembly structures of amphiphiles through changing specific weak interactions.

Abstract
Hydrogels are important soft materials with intriguing properties. By taking advantage of the host-guest interactions and multiple molecular interactions, it is expected that novel hydrogel systems can be formed. This strategy has been implemented here, transparent hydrogels were formed by using a newly-synthesized anionic surfactant, sodium 2-(4-phenylphenoxy)dodecanoate (C12biphNa), and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in different proportions and their properties were investigated. Gelation of water occurs at extremely low surfactant concentrations (5 mM for a 1:3 C12biphNa: β-CD system), and a single C12biphNa with its associated β-CDs can trap about 11,000 water molecules on average. In addition, the systems are fragile to mechanical stimulus and thus show mechanical sensitivity. Cryo-TEM reveals that the hydrogels have a microstructure consisting of rigid nanowire-like aggregates (with cross-sectional diameters of about 7-8 nm) locally distributed in a parallel manner in solution. These microstructural features are responsible for the peculiar properties of the hydrogel systems presented. The inclusion complexes formed by C12biphNa and β-CD were investigated using (1)H NMR and 2D nuclear overhauser effect spectroscopy and their aggregation state was proposed. This work enriches the connotation of nonamphiphilic self-assembly and provides inspiration for constructing new functional soft materials.

Abstract
The search for functional supramolecular aggregations with different structure has attracted interest of chemists because they have the potential in industrial and technological application. Hydrophobic interaction has great influence on the formation of these aggregations, such as hexagonal liquid crystals, wormlike micelles, hydrogels, etc. So a systematical investigation was done to investigate the influence of alkyl chain length of surfactants on the aggregation behavior in water. The aggregation behavior of 1-hexadecyl-3-alkyl imidazolium bromide and water has been systematically investigated. These ionic liquid surfactants are denoted as C16-Cn (n = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16). The rheological behavior and microstructure were characterized via a combination of rheology, cryo-etch scanning electron microscopy, polarization optical microscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The alkyl chain has great influence on the formation of surfactant aggregates in water at the molecular level. With increasing alkyl chain length, different aggregates, such as hexagonal liquid crystals, wormlike micelles, and hydrogels can be fabricated: C16-C2 aqueous solution only forms hexagonal liquid crystal; C16-C3 aqueous solution forms wormlike micelle and hexagonal liquid crystal; C16-C4, C16-C6 and C16-C8 aqueous solutions only form wormlike micelle; C16-C9 aqueous solution experiences a transition between wormlike micelle and hydrogel; C16-C10, C16-C12, C16-C14 and C16-C16 only form hydrogel. The mechanism of the transition of different aggregation with increasing alkyl chain length was also proposed.
