Synthesis and characterization of metallo-supramolecular polymers

Metallosupramolecular Multiblock Copolymers of Lanthanide Complexes by Seeded Living Polymerization

Supramolecular block copolymers, derived via seeded living polymerization, are increasingly recognized for their rich structural and functional diversity, marking them as cutting-edge materials. The use of metal complexes in supramolecular block copolymerization not only offers a broad range of block copolymers through the structural similarity in the coordination geometry of the central metal ion but also controls spectroscopic properties, such as emission wavelength, emission strength, and fluorescence lifetime. However, the exploration of metallosupramolecular multiblock copolymerization based on metal complexes remains quite limited. In this work, we present a pioneering synthesis of metallosupramolecular multiblock copolymers utilizing Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes as building blocks. This is achieved through the strategic manipulation of nonequilibrium self-assemblies via a living supramolecular polymerization approach. Our comprehensive exploration of both thermodynamically and kinetically regulated metallosupramolecular polymerizations, centered around Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes with bisterpyridine-modified ligands containing R-alanine units and a long alkyl group, has highlighted intriguing behaviors. The monomeric [R-L1Eu(NO3)3] complex generates a spherical structure as the kinetic product. In contrast, the monomeric [R-L1Eu2(NO3)6] complex generates fiber aggregates as a thermodynamic product through intermolecular interactions such as π-π stacking, hydrophobic interaction, and H-bonds. Utilizing the Eu3+ complex, we successfully conducted seed-induced living polymerization of the monomeric building unit under kinetically regulated conditions. This yielded a metallosupramolecular polymer of precisely controlled length with minimal polydispersity. Moreover, by copolymerizing the kinetically confined Tb3+ complex state ("A" species) with a seed derived from the Eu3+ complex ("B" species), we were able to fabricate metallosupramolecular tri- and pentablock copolymers with A-B-A, and B-A-B-A-B types, respectively, through a seed-end chain-growth mechanism.

The bioengineering application of hyaluronic acid in tissue regeneration and repair

The multifaceted role of hyaluronic acid (HA) across diverse biomedical disciplines underscores its versatility in tissue regeneration and repair. HA hydrogels employ different crosslinking including chemical (chitosan, collagen), photo- initiation (riboflavin, LAP), enzymatic (HRP/H2O2), and physical interactions (hydrogen bonds, metal coordination). In biophysics and biochemistry, HA's signaling pathways, primarily through CD44 and RHAMM receptors, modulate cell behavior (cell migration; internalization of HA), inflammation, and wound healing. Particularly, smaller HA fragments stimulate inflammatory responses through toll-like receptors, impacting macrophages and cytokine expression. HA's implications in oncology highlight its involvement in tumor progression, metastasis, and treatment. Elevated HA in tumor stroma impacts apoptosis resistance and promotes tumor growth, presenting potential therapeutic targets to halt tumor progression. In orthopedics, HA's presence in synovial fluid aids in osteoarthritis management, as its supplementation alleviates pain, enhances synovial fluid's viscoelastic properties, and promotes cartilage integrity. In ophthalmology, HA's application in dry eye syndrome addresses symptoms by moisturizing the eyes, replenishing tear film deficiencies, and facilitating wound healing. Intravitreal injections and hydrogel-based systems offer versatile approaches for drug delivery and vitreous humor replacement. For skin regeneration and wound healing, HA hydrogel dressings exhibit exceptional properties by promoting moist wound healing and facilitating tissue repair. Integration of advanced regenerative tools like stem cells and solubilized amnion membranes into HA-based systems accelerates wound closure and tissue recovery. Overall, HA's unique properties and interactions render it a promising candidate across diverse biomedical domains, showcasing immense potentials in tissue regeneration and therapeutic interventions. Nevertheless, many detailed cellular and molecular mechanisms of HA and its applications remain unexplored and warrant further investigation.

Solvents regulate the packing porosity of a bilayer metal-organic cage

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) are an emerging class of porous materials with promising applications. However, controlling the configuration of the cage packing, which can influence the overall porosity of the materials, remains a difficulty, as many factors can influence the cage assembly and stacking. Herein, we report a solvent strategy to fine-tune the packing configuration of a bilayer MOC, a small triangular prism cage (six Cu ions act as vertices, three nitrate ions act as pillars, and six nitrate ions act as caps) incorporated into a large triangular prism cage (another six Cu ions act as vertices, a couple of oxygen atoms act as pillars and six ligands (L1: 3,5-bis(pyridine-3-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole) act as a jointed cap) by the coordination between the triazole nitrogen from L1 and the inner vertex Cu ions. The involved solvents water, acetonitrile (MeCN) and N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) form hydrogen bonds with this bilayer MOC, resulting in three different types of packing associated with systemically tuned porosity (NTU-93: 12.2%, NTU-94: 19.3%, and NTU-95: 42.1%). Gas adsorption and breakthrough tests demonstrate that NTU-95 has potential ability for C2H2/C2H4 separation. This work not only shows a case of finely tuned packing of coordination cages, but also provides a powerful tool that may be extended to other cage families.

Functional metal-organic liquids

For decades, the study of coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been limited primarily to their behavior as crystalline solids. In recent years, there has been increasing evidence that they can undergo reversible crystal-to-liquid transitions. However, their "liquid" states have primarily been considered intermediate states, and their diverse properties and applications of the liquid itself have been overlooked. As we learn from organic polymers, ceramics, and metals, understanding the structures and properties of liquid states is essential for exploring new properties and functions that are not achievable in their crystalline state. This review presents state-of-the-art research on the liquid states of CPs and MOFs while discussing the fundamental concepts involved in controlling them. We consider the different types of crystal-to-liquid transitions found in CPs and MOFs while extending the interpretation toward other functional metal-organic liquids, such as metal-containing ionic liquids and porous liquids, and try to suggest the unique features of CP/MOF liquids. We highlight their potential applications and present an outlook for future opportunities.

Bioinspired Water Preorganization in Confined Space for Efficient Water Oxidation Catalysis in Metallosupramolecular Ruthenium Architectures

ConspectusNature has established a sustainable way to maintain aerobic life on earth by inventing one of the most sophisticated biological processes, namely, natural photosynthesis, which delivers us with organic matter and molecular oxygen derived from the two abundant resources sunlight and water. The thermodynamically demanding photosynthetic water splitting is catalyzed by the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II (OEC-PSII), which comprises a distorted tetramanganese-calcium cluster (CaMn4O5) as catalytic core. As an ubiquitous concept for fine-tuning and regulating the reactivity of the active site of metalloenzymes, the surrounding protein domain creates a sophisticated environment that promotes substrate preorganization through secondary, noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding or electrostatic interactions. Based on the high-resolution X-ray structure of PSII, several water channels were identified near the active site, which are filled with extensive hydrogen-bonding networks of preorganized water molecules, connecting the OEC with the protein surface. As an integral part of the outer coordination sphere of natural metalloenzymes, these channels control the substrate and product delivery, carefully regulate the proton flow by promoting pivotal proton-coupled electron transfer processes, and simultaneously stabilize short-lived oxidized intermediates, thus highlighting the importance of an ordered water network for the remarkable efficiency of the natural OEC.Transferring this concept from nature to the engineering of artificial metal catalysts for fuel production has fostered the fascinating field of metallosupramolecular chemistry by generating defined cavities that conceptually mimic enzymatic pockets. However, the application of supramolecular approaches to generate artificial water oxidation catalysts remained scarce prior to our initial reports, since such molecular design strategies for efficient activation of substrate water molecules in confined nanoenvironments were lacking. In this Account, we describe our research efforts on combining the state-of-the art Ru(bda) catalytic framework with structurally programmed ditopic ligands to guide the water oxidation process in defined metallosupramolecular assemblies in spatial proximity. We will elucidate the governing factors that control the quality of hydrogen-bonding water networks in multinuclear cavities of varying sizes and geometries to obtain high-performance, state-of-the-art water oxidation catalysts. Pushing the boundaries of artificial catalyst design, embedding a single catalytic Ru center into a well-defined molecular pocket enabled sophisticated water preorganization in front of the active site through an encoded basic recognition site, resulting in high catalytic rates comparable to those of the natural counterpart OEC-PSII.To fully explore their potential for solar fuel devices, the suitability of our metallosupramolecular assemblies was demonstrated under (electro)chemical and photocatalytic water oxidation conditions. In addition, testing the limits of structural diversity allowed the fabrication of self-assembled linear coordination oligomers as novel photocatalytic materials and long-range ordered covalent organic framework (COF) materials as recyclable and long-term stable solid-state materials for future applications.

Retrospective Analysis of Structure-Property Relationship of Emergent Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer Networks

Metallo-supramolecular polymer networks (MSPNs) are fabricated from the crosslinking of polymers by discrete supramolecular coordination complexes. Due to the availability of various coordination complexes, e. g., 2D macrocycles and 3D nanocages, the MSPNs have been recently developed with broadly tunable visco-elasticity and enriched functions inherited from the coordination complexes. The coordination complexes possess enriched topologies and unique structural relaxation dynamics, rendering them the capability to break the traditional tradeoffs of polymer systems for the design of materials with enhanced mechanical performance. The structure-property relationship studies are critical for the material-by-design of MSPNs, while the spatiotemporal investigations are desired for the exploration of dynamics information. The work summarizes recent studies on the unique ligand-exchange kinetics and the multi-level structural relaxation dynamics of MSPNs. The MSPNs' mechanical properties can be quantitatively correlated with the dynamics for understanding the structure-property relationship. This concept will not only serve to attract more researchers to engage in the study of the structure-activity relationship of MSPNs but also inspire innovative research findings pertaining to the application of MSPNs.

Supramolecular Synthesis of Star Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, in which monomers are assembled via intermolecular interactions, have been extensively studied. The fusion of supramolecular polymers with conventional polymers has attracted the attention of many researchers. In this review article, the recent progress in the construction of supramolecular star polymers, including regular star polymers and miktoarm star polymers, is discussed. The initial sections briefly provide an overview of the conventional classification and synthesis methods for star polymers. Coordination-driven self-assembly was investigated for the supramolecular synthesis of star polymers. Star polymers with multiple polymer chains radiating from metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) have also been described. Particular focus has been placed on the synthesis of star polymers featuring supramolecular cores formed through hydrogen-bonding-directed self-assembly. After describing the synthesis of star polymers based on host-guest complexes, the construction of miktoarm star polymers based on the molecular recognition of coordination capsules is detailed.

Highly robust supramolecular polymer networks crosslinked by a tiny amount of metallacycles

Supramolecular polymeric materials have exhibited attractive features such as self-healing, reversibility, and stimuli-responsiveness. However, on account of the weak bonding nature of most noncovalent interactions, it remains a great challenge to construct supramolecular polymeric materials with high robustness. Moreover, high usage of supramolecular units is usually necessary to promote the formation of robust supramolecular polymeric materials, which restrains their applications. Herein, we describe the construction of highly robust supramolecular polymer networks by using only a tiny amount of metallacycles as the supramolecular crosslinkers. A norbornene ring-opening metathesis copolymer with a 120° dipyridine ligand is prepared and self-assembled with a 60° or 120° Pt(II) acceptor to fabricate the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks. With only 0.28 mol% or less pendant dipyridine units to form the metallacycle crosslinkers, the mechanical properties of the polymers are significantly enhanced. The tensile strengths, Young's moduli, and toughness of the reinforced polymers reach up to more than 20 MPa, 600 MPa, and 150 MJ/m3, respectively. Controllable destruction and reconstruction of the metallacycle-crosslinked polymer networks are further demonstrated by the sequential addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide and silver triflate, indicative of good stimuli-responsiveness of the networks. These remarkable performances are attributed to the thermodynamically stable, but dynamic metallacycle-based supramolecular coordination complexes that offer strong linkages with good adaptive characteristics.

Construction of Supramolecular Polymers and Covalent Polymers via the Same Monomers

Nature owns the ability to construct structurally different polymers from the same monomers. While polymers can be classified as covalent polymers (CPs) and supramolecular polymers (SPs), it is still difficult to synthesize CPs and SPs using same monomers like nature do. Herein, M1 with two diazo salts on both the ends was designed. Additionally, hydroquinone was chosen to be M2 for the existence of two hydroxyl groups. When mixing at room temperature, M1 and M2 self-assembled to SPs via N…H hydrogen bonds. In another way, upon the exposure to ultraviolet irradiation when blending M1 with M2, CPs were fabricated in the presence of covalent bonds. The excellent thermal stability of CPs was determined by TGA and DSC, while the great corrosion resistance of covalent polymers was detected by acid or alkali immersion. In this way, constructing two kinds of polymers using the same monomers was successfully achieved. This shows tremendous potential in fields of polymer science, supramolecular chemistry, which would boom the development of polymers.

Recent progress in ion-regulated organic room-temperature phosphorescence

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted considerable attention for their extended afterglow at ambient conditions, eco-friendliness, and wide-ranging applications in bio-imaging, data storage, security inks, and emergency illumination. Significant advancements have been achieved in recent years in developing highly efficient RTP materials by manipulating the intermolecular interactions. In this perspective, we have summarized recent advances in ion-regulated organic RTP materials based on the roles and interactions of ions, including the ion-π interactions, electrostatic interactions, and coordinate interactions. Subsequently, the current challenges and prospects of utilizing ionic interactions for inducing and modulating the phosphorescent properties are presented. It is anticipated that this perspective will provide basic guidelines for fabricating novel ionic RTP materials and further extend their application potential.

Characterization by Gel Permeation Chromatography of the Molecular Weight of Supramolecular Polymers Generated by Forming Polyrotaxanes through the Introduction of External Stoppers

Supramolecular polymers find wide applications across diverse domains, and the molecular weight exerts a critical influence on their applicability. Consequently, the measurement of molecular weight for supramolecular polymers assumes paramount significance. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) requiring low-concentration condition is a common characterization employed for molecular weight determination, which is not suitable for supramolecular polymers possessing concentration-independence property. Here, to break this threshold, we synthesized M1 embodying dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) moiety as well as dibenzylammonium salt (DBA) group, which was capable of self-assembling into supramolecular polymers terminated with aldehyde groups at its end. Upon the addition of (4- (1,2,2-Triphenylvinyl) phenyl) methylamine (TPE-NH2), supramolecular polymers underwent a transition into polyrotaxanes, for which it was led by the generation of imine bonds. By virtue of GPC, the molecular weight of polyrotaxanes was obtained, then it was available to gain the molecular weight of supramolecular polymers with the help of transformation efficiency.

Metallo-Supramolecular Helical Fibres from Chiral Phenylacetylene Monomers: Cation Induced Self-Assembly

Chiral metallo-supramolecular fibres can be easily obtained by mixing a chloroform solution of a phenylacetylene monomer (PA) that bears a chiral sulfoxide group as pendant, with different equivalents of a methanolic solution of AgClO4 . Thus, while the PA is found molecularly dissolved in chloroform, the addition of Ag+ ions induce its aggregation through the formation of an axially chiral metallo-supramolecular aggregate with high thermal stable properties. In this case, the ability of the metal ion to coordinate the PA triple bond, combined with the argentophilicity of the metal ion and the planarity of the phenylacetylene drives to the formation of a helical coordination polymer, whose P or M axial chirality is determined by the chirality of the sulfoxide used as substituent of the PA. Depending on the PA/Ag+ (mol/mol) ratio, it is possible to tune the morphology of the metallo-supramolecular aggregate from chiral fibers to chiral gel.

Regulating the Flexibility to Assemble Porous Single-Atom Fe-Coordinated Metallopolymers for Efficient Heterogeneous Catalytic Oxidations

Metallopolymers as organic-inorganic hybrid materials formulated by metal embedding organic polymers show great potential for novel heterogeneous catalysis, in terms of the facile structural design and tunability. Herein, the disadvantage of nonporous stacking of one-dimensional (1D) structures has been suppressed by chain modulation of the 1D metallopolymers, allowing for the convenient construction of porous assemblies with single-atom dispersion and accessible active sites. By postmodification, the Fe/CM-1 catalyst readily synthesized by coordinating the Fe(II) to the twisted chain of 1D Schiff-base polymer possesses expedient flexibility, showing the highest porosity, remarkable heterogeneous recyclability, and thus prominent catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of benzylamine and alcohols. Moreover, control experiments supported by computational studies demonstrated that the unique pincer structure of Fe/CM-1 effectively maintains the valence state of the anchored single-atom iron, facilitating single-electron transfer and promoting efficient iron redox cycling during the catalytic process. Notably, these 1D metallopolymers have the advantage of cost-effectiveness, easy preparation in gram-scale, and utilization in continuous reaction, providing inspirations for facile synthesis of efficient heterogeneous catalysts from the well-developed 1D metallopolymers.

Investigating the Impact of Packing and Environmental Factors on the Luminescence of Pt(N^N^N) Chromophores

Four Pt(II)(N^N^N) compounds featuring DMSO coordination at the fourth position were synthesized. Ligands varied in terms of pyridyl central ring (hydrogen/chlorine substituent) and lateral rings (triazoles with CF3 substitution or tetrazoles). Coordination to pyridine yielded tetra-nitrogen coordinated Pt(II) complexes or Pt-functionalized polymers using commercial 4-pyridyl polyvinyl (PV) or dimethylaminopyridine. Luminescence behaviors exhibited remarkable environmental dependence. While some of the molecular compounds (tetrazole derivatives) in solid state displayed quenched luminescence, all the polymers exhibited 3MMLCT emission around 600 nm. Conversely, monomer emission was evident on poly(methyl methacrylate) or polystyrene matrices. DFT calculations were used to analyze the aggregation of the complexes both at the molecular level and coordinated to the PV polymer and their influence on the HOMO-LUMO gaps.

Dynamic metal-linker bonds in metal-organic frameworks

Metal-linker bonds serve as the "glue" that binds metal ions to multitopic organic ligands in the porous materials known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Despite ample evidence of bond lability in molecular and polymeric coordination compounds, the metal-linker bonds of MOFs were long assumed to be rigid and static. Given the importance of ligand fields in determining the behaviour of metal species, labile bonding in MOFs would help explain outstanding questions about MOF behaviour, while providing a design tool for controlling dynamic and stimuli-responsive optoelectronic, magnetic, catalytic, and mechanical phenomena. Here, we present emerging evidence that MOF metal-linker bonds exist in dynamic equilibria between weakly and tightly bond conformations, and that these equilibria respond to guest-host chemistry, drive phase change behavior, and exhibit size-dependence in MOF nanoparticles.

Surface-confined alternating copolymerization with molecular precision by stoichiometric control

Keen desires for artificial mimicry of biological polymers and property improvement of synthesized ones have triggered intensive explorations for sequence-controlled copolymerization. However, conventional synthesis faces great challenges to achieve this goal due to the strict requirements on reaction kinetics of comonomer pairs and tedious synthetic processes. Here, sequence-controlled alternating copolymerization with molecular precision is realized on surface. The stoichiometric control serves as a thermodynamic strategy to steer the polymerization selectivity, which enables the selective alternating organometallic copolymerization via intermolecular metalation of 4,4"-dibromo-p-terphenyl (P-Br) and 2,5-diethynyl-1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (A-H) with Ag adatoms on Ag(111) at P-Br: A-H = 2, as verified by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory studies. In contrast, homopolymerization yield increases as the stoichiometric ratio deviates from 2. The microscopic characterizations rationalize the mechanism, providing a delicate explanation of the stoichiometry-dependent polymerization. These findings pave a way to actualizing an efficient sequence control of copolymerization by surface chemistry.

Photoreactive silver-containing supramolecular polymers that form self-assembled nanogels for efficient antibacterial treatment

In this study, an efficient synthetic strategy and potential route to obtain a photo-reactive silver-containing cytosine-functionalized polypropylene glycol polymer (Ag-Cy-PPG) was developed by combining a hydrophilic oligomeric polypropylene glycol (PPG) backbone with dual pH-sensitive/photo-reactive cytosine-silver-cytosine (Cy-Ag-Cy) linkages. The resulting photo-responsive Ag-Cy-PPG holds great promise as a multifunctional biomedical material that generates spherical-like nanogels in water; the nanogels exhibit high antibacterial activity and thus may significantly enhance the efficacy of antibacterial treatment. Due to the formation of photo-dimerized Cy-Ag-Cy cross-linkages after UV irradiation, Ag-Cy-PPG converts into water-soluble cross-linked nanogels that possess a series of interesting chemical and physical properties, such as intense and stable fluorescence behavior, highly sensitive pH-responsive characteristics, on/off switchable phase transition behavior, and well-controlled release of silver ions (Ag+) in mildly acidic aqueous solution. Importantly, antibacterial tests clearly demonstrated that irradiated Ag-Cy-PPG nanogels exhibited strong antibacterial activity at low doses (MIC values of < 50 μg/mL) against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens, whereas non-irradiated Ag-Cy-PPG nanogels did not inhibit the viability of bacterial pathogens. These results indicate that irradiated Ag-Cy-PPG nanogels undergo a highly sensitive structural change in the bacterial microenvironment due to their relatively unstable π-conjugated structures (compared to non-irradiated nanogels); this change results in a rapid structural response that promotes intracellular release of Ag+ and induces potent antibacterial ability. Overall, this newly created metallo-supramolecular system may potentially provide an efficient route to dramatically enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of antibacterial treatments.

Mononuclear or Coordination Polymer Complexes? Both Are Possible for 3,6,9-Trioxaundecanedioic Acid

Investigating the driving forces leading to the formation of a specific supramolecular architecture among a wide spectrum of all the possibly obtainable structures is not an easy task. The contemporary literature provides several models for correctly predicting the thermodynamically accessible structures that can originate from a library of building blocks. Definitions are rigid by their very nature, so their application may sometimes require a shift in perspective. In the study presented herein, we describe the crystal structures of three metallo-supramolecular architectures assembled from deprotonated derivatives of 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid and Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). In the Mn(II) case, the complexation resulted in a complex of a discrete/heptacoordinated nature, whereas the other two structures appeared as helical polymers. To explain such an anomaly, in this work, we describe how the interplay between the flexibility of the ligand spacer and the number of coordinating atoms involved determines the divergent or convergent organisation of the final coordination architecture.

A fluorescent controllable supramolecular crosslinked polymer constructed by complementary metal coordination interaction

In this work, two different monomers M1 and M2 were designed and synthesized. M1 + M2 + Zn(OTf)2 could self-assemble to form a supramolecular crosslinked polymer (SCP) based on complementary terpyridine-based metal coordination interaction. The self-assembly of M1 + M2 + Zn(OTf)2 was studied by various techniques, such as 1H NMR, 2D COSY NMR, 2D NOESY NMR, UV-Vis analysis, fluorescence analysis, viscosity measurement, and TEM. The experimental result indicated that the molecular weight of the SCP depended on the initial monomer concentration. The SCP could further turn into supramolecular polymer gel at high concentrations, and the reversible gel-sol transformation could be realized by heating/cooling. Moreover, the fluorescence quenching/enhancement of the SCP could be adjusted by adding base/acid.

Structure and Properties of Metallosupramolecular Polymers with a Nitrogen-Based Bidentate Ligand

The solid-state properties of supramolecular polymers that feature metal-ligand (ML) complexes are, in addition to the general nature of the monomer, significantly affected by the choice of ligand and metal salt. Indeed, the variation of these components can be used to alter the structural, thermal, mechanical, and viscoelastic properties over a wide ranges. Moreover, the dynamic nature of certain ML complexes can render the resulting metallosupramolecular polymers (MSPs) stimuli-responsive, enabling functions such as healing, reversible adhesion, and mechanotransduction. We here report MSPs based on the bidentate ligand 6-(1'-methylbenzimidazolyl) pyridine (MBP), which is easily accessible and forms threefold coordination complexes with various transition metal ions. Thus, a poly(ethylene-co-butylene) telechelic was end-functionalized with two MBP ligands and the resulting macromonomer was assembled with the triflate salts of either Zn2+, Fe2+, or Ni2+. All three MSPs microphase separate and adopt, depending on the metal ion and thermal history, lamellar or hexagonal morphologies with crystalline domains formed by the ML complexes. The melting transitions are well below 200 °C, and this permits facile (re)processing. Furthermore, defects can be readily and fully healed upon exposure to UV-light. While the three MSPs display similar moduli in the rubbery regime, their extensibility and tensile strength depend on the nature of the ML complex, which similarly affects the long-range order and dynamic behavior.

Challenges and Opportunities of Functionalized Cucurbiturils for Biomedical Applications

Cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) macrocycles (especially CB[5] to CB[8]) have shown exceptional attributes since their discovery in 2000. Their stability, water solubility, responsiveness to several stimuli, and remarkable binding properties have enabled a growing number of biological applications. Yet, soon after their discovery, the challenge of their functionalization was set. Nevertheless, after more than two decades, a myriad of CB[n] derivatives has been described, many of them used in cells or in vivo for advanced applications. This perspective summarizes key advances of this burgeoning field and points to the next opportunities and remaining challenges to fully express the potential of these fascinating macrocycles in biology and biomedical sciences.

Rational Loading of Linear Multi-Site Receptors with Functional Lanthanide Containers: The Missing Link between Oligomers and Polymers

Although metal-containing organic polymers are becoming essential for modern applications in lighting, catalysis, and electronic devices, very little is known about their controlled metallic loading, which mainly limits their design to empirical mixing followed by characterization and often hampers rational developments. Focusing on the appealing optical and magnetic properties of 4f-block cations, the host-guest reactions leading to linear lanthanidopolymers already display some unexpected dependence of the binding-site affinities on the length of the organic polymer backbone: a drift usually, and erroneously, assigned to intersite cooperativity. Taking advantage of the parameters obtained for the stepwise thermodynamic loading of a series of rigid linear multi-tridentate organic receptors with increasing length, N = 1 (monomer L1), N = 2 (dimer L2), and N = 3 (trimer L3), with [Ln(hfa)3] containers in solution (Ln = trivalent lanthanide cations, hfa- = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-pentane-2,4-dione anion), it is demonstrated here that the site-binding model, based on the Potts-Ising approach, successfully predicts the binding properties of the novel soluble polymer P2N made up of nine successive binding units . An in-depth examination of the photophysical properties of these lanthanidopolymers shows impressive UV→vis downshifting quantum yields for the europium-based red luminescence, which can be modulated by the length of the polymeric chain.

Preparation of spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex

The immobilization of functional metal complexes onto polymer supports remains one of the most important research areas. In this study, we prepared spiroborate supramolecular and peapod polymers containing a cationic photoluminescent ruthenium(ii) complex. The supramolecular polymer was obtained by mixing spiroborate cyclic trimer bearing homoallyl group and a ruthenium(ii) tris(bipyridyl) complex, and was further converted into the corresponding peapod polymer by olefin metathesis polymerization. The structure of these polymers was determined by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analyses, and atomic force microscopy. The absorption and emission behaviors of the ruthenium(ii) complex were almost the same for the free form and the supramolecular polymer in the mixed solvent of N,N-dimethylformamide and chloroform, although the emission intensity decreased when the chloroform portion was increased. On the other hand, the hypsochromism was observed upon the emission of the ruthenium(ii) complex in the peapod polymer, probably due to the rigidochromic effect of the tight encapsulation by the peapod structure.

Aqueous coordination polymer complexes: From colloidal assemblies to bulk materials

1-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers refer to the macromolecules that have metal ions incorporated in their pendent groups or main chain through metal-binding ligand groups. They have intrinsic advantages over traditional polymers to regulate the polymer structures and functions owing to the nature of the metal-ligand bond. Consequently, they have great potential for the development of smart and functional structures and materials and therapeutic agents. Water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies are an important subtype of coordination polymers with distinctive interests for demanding applications in aqueous systems, such as biological and medical applications. This review highlights the recent progress and research achievements in the design and use of water-soluble 1D coordination polymers and assemblies. The overview covers the design and structure control of 1D coordination polymers, their colloidal assemblies, including nanoparticles, nanofibers, micelles and vesicles, and fabricated bulk materials such as membraneless liquid condensates, security ink, hydrogel actuators, and smart fabrics. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of several of these coordination polymeric structures and materials and give an outlook on the field of aqueous coordination polymers.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Luminescent Cyclic Poly(ethylene oxide)-Polypyridyl Ruthenium Complex

We report the synthesis of a macrocyclic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) connected by one [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ unit (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), a photoactive metal complex that provides photosensitivity and potential biomedical applications to this polymer structure. The PEO chain provides biocompatibility, water solubility, and topological play. The macrocycles were successfully synthesized by copper-free click cycloaddition between a bifunctional dibenzocyclooctyne (DBCO)-PEO precursor and 4,4'-diazido-2,2'-bipyridine, followed by complexation with [Ru(bpy)₂Cl₂]. The cyclic product accumulated efficiently in MCF7 cancer cells and exhibited a longer fluorescence lifetime than its linear analogue, likely due to differences in the accessibility of the ligand-centered/intraligand states of Ru polypyridyls in both topologies.

Multi-chiral materials comprising metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers containing five axial motifs within a helix

Supramolecular and covalent polymers share multiple structural effects such as communication mechanisms among monomer repeating units, which are related to their axial helical structure. Herein, a unique multi-helical material combining information from both metallosupramolecular and covalent helical polymers is presented. In this system, the helical structure described by the poly(acetylene) (PA) backbone (cis-cisoidal, cis-transoidal) guides the pendant groups in a fashion where a tilting degree emerges between a pendant and the adjacent ones. As a result, a multi-chiral material is formed comprising four or five axial motifs when the polyene skeleton adopts either a cis-transoidal or cis-cisoidal configuration: the two coaxial helices-internal and external-and the two or three chiral axial motifs described by the bispyridyldichlorido Pt^II complex array. These results show that complex multi-chiral materials can be obtained by polymerizing appropriate monomers that combine both point chirality and the ability to generate chiral supramolecular assemblies.

Synthesis of platinum(II)-complex end-tethered polymers: spectroscopic properties and nanostructured particles

Although metal-containing polymers have been widely studied as a novel class of functional soft materials, the microphase separation between polymeric segments and metal-ligand complexes has been less addressed, which is critical to control their structures and functions. To do this, short-chain polystyrenes (PSs) have been end-functionalized with nanosized square-planar platinum(II) complexes. The platinum(II)-comprising polymers were found to show significant luminescence enhancement in chloroform/methanol solvent mixtures upon increasing the methanol composition. By modulating both the PS length and solvent quality, various self-assembled morphologies formed controllably in the mixed solvents and typical examples include nanofibers, nanoellipsoids, and nanospheres. More interestingly, the inside structures of these polymer particles are shown to be lamellar with sub-10 nm spacings, wherein the PS blocks are alternatively aligned with the platinum(II) units. Such a luminescence enhancement and hierarchical nanostructured particles originate from a subtle combination of directional Pt(II)⋯Pt(II) and/or π-π stacking interactions between the platinum(II) units and the solvophobic effect between the PS blocks. This work suggests that by microphase separating polymer chains with nanosized metal-ligand complexes, metal-containing polymers can self-assemble to form sub-10 nm scale nanostructures showcasing desired properties and functions.

Supramolecular Soft Material Enabled by Metal Coordination and Hydrogen Bonding: Stretchability, Self-Healing, Impact Resistance, 3D Printing, and Motion Monitoring

Metal coordination can significantly improve the macroscopic performance of many materials by enhancing their dynamic features. In this study, two supramolecular interactions, Fe³⁺ -carboxylic acid coordination, and structural water-induced hydrogen bonding, into an artificial polymer were introduced. Various attractive features, including flexibility and stretchability, are achieved because of the bulk state and dynamic hydrogen bonds of poly(thioctic acid-water) (poly[TA-H]). These unique features are considerably enhanced after the incorporation of Fe³⁺ cations into poly[TA-H] because metal coordination increased the mobility of the poly[TA-H] chains. Thus, the poly(thioctic acid-water-metal) (poly[TA-HM]) copolymer exhibited better flexibility and stretchability. Moreover, notable underwater/low-temperature self-healing capacity is obtained via the synergistic effect of the metal and hydrogen bonding. Most of the impact energy is quickly absorbed by poly[TA-H] or poly[TA-HM] and effectively and rapidly dissipated via reversible debonding/bonding via the interactions between the metal and hydrogen. Macroscopic plastic deformation or structural failure is not observed during high-speed (50-70 m s^-1 ) impact experiments or high-altitude (90 m) falling tests. Furthermore, poly[TA-HM] displayed good thermal molding properties, which enabled its processing via 3D fused deposition modeling printing. Poly[TA-HM] also showed considerable effectiveness for monitoring complicated, dynamic, and irregular biological activities owing to its highly pressure-sensitive nature.

Direct synthesis of amorphous coordination polymers and metal–organic frameworks

Coordination polymers (CPs) and their subset, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can have porous structures and hybrid physicochemical properties that are useful for diverse applications. Although crystalline CPs and MOFs have received the most attention to date, their amorphous states are of growing interest as they can be directly synthesized under mild conditions. Directly synthesized amorphous CPs (aCPs) can be constructed from a wider range of metals and ligands than their crystalline and crystal-derived counterparts and demonstrate numerous unique material properties, such as higher mechanical robustness, increased stability and greater processability. This Review examines methods for the direct synthesis of aCPs and amorphous MOFs, as well as their properties and characterization routes, and offers a perspective on the opportunities for the widespread adoption of directly synthesized aCPs.

Metal Ion and Guest-Mediated Spontaneous Resolution and Solvent-Induced Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Guanine-Based Metallosupramolecular Networks

Two-dimensional (2D) chirality has been actively studied in view of numerous applications of chiral surfaces such as in chiral resolutions and enantioselective catalysis. Here, we report on the expression and amplification of chirality in hybrid 2D metallosupramolecular networks formed by a nucleobase derivative. Self-assembly of a guanine derivative appended with a pyridyl node was studied at the solution-graphite interface in the presence and absence of coordinating metal ions. In the absence of coordinating metal ions, a monolayer that is representative of a racemic compound was obtained. This system underwent spontaneous resolution upon addition of a coordinating ion and led to the formation of a racemic conglomerate. The spontaneous resolution could also be achieved upon addition of a suitable guest molecule. The mirror symmetry observed in the formation of the metallosupramolecular networks could be broken via the use of an enantiopure solvent, which led to the formation of a globally homochiral surface.

Assembled Morphology of Copper-Thiourea Coordination-Mediated Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers

Metallo-supramolecular polymers represent a powerful platform to construct self-assembled morphologies. Copper-thiourea (Cu-TU) coordination interactions, though have been extensively studied in small molecular system, the role of TU motifs in synthetic polymers using metal-ligand coordination to afford supramolecular aggregation and their morphology are often overlooked. Herein, an amphiphilic random copolymer, poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) ethyl acrylate-r-acylthiourea) (P(OEGEA-r-ATU)), bearing pendant TU motifs behaving as the ligand to coordinate Cu, a design characterized by core-coordinated metallo-supramolecular polymer is rationally synthesized. Indeed, rod-like nano-objects are successfully generated via the self-assembly and coordination interaction between P(OEGEA-r-ATU) and Cu. The spatial distribution of TU moieties in polymer chain, along with their Cu chelating capability, featuring the interchain coordination interaction, is tightly related to metallo-supramolecular polymer organization. The specific Cu-TU coordination interactions enable the prompted robustness and stability of soft P(OEGEA-r-ATU), induce the polymer chain configuration, which eventually furnish efficient fabrication of rod-like nano-objects via straightforward nanoprecipitation procedure. These structural motifs of copper-coordinated, rod-like nano-objects from such metallo-supramolecular polymers endow the potential therapeutic properties, such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects.

Effect of Counterions on the Physicomechanical Properties of Copper-Nitrogen-Coordinated Metallosupramolecular Elastomers

Metallosupramolecular elastomers have attracted much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, flexible tailoring of performance, and responsiveness to photo and thermal stimuli. The physicomechanical properties of metallosupramolecular elastomers are highly dependent on metal salts and ligand units; however, the role of counterions lacks practical exploration. To this end, we synthesized a simple acrylate copolymer model and introduced copper salts with different counterions to construct dynamic copper-nitrogen coordination cross-linked networks. This approach generated a series of elastomers with a tensile strength of over 10 MPa and a laser self-healing efficiency of over 90% within 2 min. In particular, we studied the effects of counterions on the thermodynamic, viscoelastic, mechanical, photothermal, and self-healing properties of the materials. Therefore, this work can provide instruction for the preparation and performance tailoring of metallosupramolecular elastomers.

Self-assembled Ru(bda) Coordination Oligomers as Efficient Catalysts for Visible Light-Driven Water Oxidation in Pure Water

Water-soluble multinuclear complexes based on ruthenium 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate (bda) and ditopic bipyridine linker units are investigated in three-component visible light-driven water oxidation catalysis. Systematic studies revealed a strong enhancement of the catalytic efficiency in the absence of organic co-solvents and with increasing oligomer length. In-depth kinetic and morphological investigations suggest that the enhanced performance is induced by the self-assembly of linear Ru(bda) oligomers into aggregated superstructures. The obtained turnover frequencies (up to 14.9 s^-1 ) and turnover numbers (more than 1000) per ruthenium center are the highest reported so far for Ru(bda)-based photocatalytic water oxidation systems.

Novel Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers with 1-Thioxophosphole Main-Chain Units and Remarkable Photoinduced Changes in Their Resonance Raman Spectra

New low-bandgap unimers, with the central thiophene-(1-thioxophosphole)-thiophene (TPT) ring sequence and 2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4'-yl (tpy) end groups connected to the central unit via conjugated linkers of different size, are prepared and assembled with Zn(II) and Fe(II) ions to metallo-supramolecular polymers (MSPs) that are studied regarding their properties. The most interesting feature of Zn-MSPs is the luminescence extended deep into the NIR region. Fe-MSPs not only show the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) manifested by the MLCT band (an expected feature) but also an as-yet-undescribed remarkable phenomenon: specific damping of the bands of the TPT sequence in the resonance Raman spectra taken from solid Fe-MSPs using the excitation to the MLCT band (532 nm). The damping is highly reversible at the low laser power of 0.1 mW but gradually becomes irreversible as the power reaches ca. 5 mW. The revealed phenomenon is not shown by the same Fe-MSPs in solutions, nor by Fe-MSPs containing no phosphole units. A hypothesis is proposed that explains this phenomenon and its dependence on the irradiation intensity as a result of the interplay of three factors: (i) enhancement of the MLCT process by excitation radiation, (ii) the electron-acceptor character of the 1-thioxophosphole ring, and (iii) morphological changes of the lattice and their dependence on the population of new structures in the lattice.

A Metal Coordination-Based Supramolecular Elastomer with Shape Memory-Assisted Self-Healing Effect

Rubber materials are widely used in aerospace, automotive, smart devices and artificial skin. It is significant to address the aging susceptibility of conventional vulcanized rubber and to impart it rapid self-healing performance for destructive crack damage. Herein, a novel supramolecular rubber elastomer is prepared by introducing metal coordination between carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene and polystyrene-vinylpyridine copolymer. Based on the metal coordination interaction, the elastomer exhibits shape memory and self-healing properties. Moreover, a rapid closure-repair process of destructive cracks is achieved by presetting temporary shapes. This shape memory-assisted self-repair model is shown to be an effective means for rapid repair of severe cracks. An approach to enhance the mechanical and self-healing properties of elastomer was demonstrated by adding appropriate amounts of oxidized carbon nano-onions (O-CNO) into the system. The tensile strength of the elastomer with an O-CNOs content of 0.5 wt% was restored to 83 ± 10% of the original sample after being repaired at 85 °C for 6 h. This study confirms that metal coordination interaction is an effective method for designing shape memory self-healing rubber elastomer. The shape memory-assisted self-healing effect provides a reference for the rapid self-repairing of severe cracks.

Noncovalently Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Reinforced by Well-Designed In Situ-Formed Nanofillers

Noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials generally exhibit lower mechanical robustness than traditional polymeric materials. Therefore, it is important to improve the mechanical properties of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials using an efficient and generalized approach. In this Perspective, we systematically summarized the recent development of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced by in situ-formed nanofillers. The synergy of high-density noncovalent interactions and in situ-formed rigid nanofillers provided an effective means for the fabrication of noncovalently cross-linked plastics with high mechanical strength. The design of in situ-formed tough nanofillers, which could deform and dissociate, endowed the noncovalently cross-linked hydrogels and elastomers with high toughness, excellent stretchability, elasticity, damage resistance, and damage tolerance. Benefiting from the well-designed in situ-formed nanofillers, these noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials with enhanced mechanical strength still exhibited satisfactory healing, recycling, and reprocessing properties. Outlooks were provided to envision the remaining challenges to the further development and practical application of noncovalently cross-linked polymeric materials reinforced with in situ-formed nanofillers.

A Strategy Based on Aggregation-Induced Ratiometric Emission to Differentiate Molecular Weight of Supramolecular Polymers

Molecular weight has an important bearing on the properties of supramolecular polymers. However, the intuitive differentiation of the molecular weight of supramolecular polymers remains challenging. Given this situation, establishing a reliable relationship between fluorescence properties and molecular weight may be a promising strategy. Herein, we prepared a supramolecular monomer M1 with aggregation-induced ratiometric emission characteristics. With the increasing M1 concentration (0.100-100 mM), the average degree of polymerization (DP_DOSY ) rose from 1.00 to 293. Meanwhile, the color changed from dark blue to cyan, finally to yellow-green in the same concentration range. Hence, the intuitive relationship between DP_DOSY and fluorescence colors was constructed, allowing the visual differentiation of molecular weight. Moreover, the fluorescence color could be regulated by introducing a competitive molecule to induce the depolymerization of supramolecular polymers.

Supramolecular organometallic chemistry: the platinum(IV) paradigm

Supramolecular chemistry and the chemistry of alkyl derivatives of the transition metals are both topics of considerable current interest, but the combination of the two fields is still underdeveloped. The challenges are, in large part, experimental in nature. For example, the self-assembly of molecules in supramolecular chemistry often relies on intermolecular hydrogen bonding, but most alkyl-transition metal bonds are cleaved by the protic groups used in hydrogen bond formation. Alkyl-platinum(IV) bonds are inert to protonolysis or attack by other electrophiles under mild conditions, and this has allowed an extensive supramolecular chemistry of organoplatinum(IV) complexes to be developed, as outlined in this perspective review. Highlights include a zeolitic structure, a polyrotaxane, a double helix, a nanotube structure and an example of spontaneous resolution to form a chiral sheet structure.

Phenylene as an efficient mediator for intermetallic electronic coupling

The new compound [(NC)Ru₂(ap)₄]₂(μ-1,4-C₆H₄) (ap = 2-anilinopyridinate) was prepared to address the open question of whether a 1,4-phenylene bridge can mediate intermetallic electronic coupling. As a manifestation of strong coupling, hole delocalization between the Ru₂ centers on the IR time scale (10^-14 s) was established using spectroelectrochemistry. An orbital mechanism for coupling was elaborated with DFT analysis.
