Sensing lead ions in water: a comprehensive review on strategies and sensor materials

It is well-known fact that elevated lead ions (Pb2+), the third most toxic among heavy metal ions in aqueous systems, pose a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems when they exceed permissible limits. Pb2+ is commonly found in industrial waste and fertilizers, contaminating water sources and subsequently entering the human body, causing various adverse health conditions. Unlike being expelled, Pb2+ accumulates within the body, posing potential health risks. The harmful impact of presence of Pb2+ in water have prompted researchers to diligently work toward maintaining water quality. Recognizing the importance of Pb2+, this review article makes a sincere and effective effort to address the issues associated with Pb2+. This overview article gives insights into various sensing approaches to detect Pb2+ in water using different sensing materials, including 2-dimensional materials, thiols, quantum dots, and polymers. Herein, different sensing approaches such as electrochemical, optical, field effect transistor-based, micro-electromechanical system-based, and chemi resistive are thoroughly explained. Field effect transistor-based and chemiresistive work on similar principles and are compared on the basis of their fabrication processes and sensing capabilities. In conclusion, future directions for chemiresistive sensors in Pb2+ detection are proposed, emphasizing their simplicity, portability, straightforward functionality, and ease of fabrication. Notably, it sheds light on various thiol and ligand compounds and coupling strategies utilized in Pb2+ detection. This comprehensive study is expected to benefit individuals engaged in Pb2+ detection.

Nanoscale Vertical Resolution in Optical Printing of Inorganic Nanoparticles

Direct optical printing of functional inorganics shows tremendous potential as it enables the creation of intricate two-dimensional (2D) patterns and affordable design and production of various devices. Although there have been recent advancements in printing processes using short-wavelength light or pulsed lasers, the precise control of the vertical thickness in printed 3D structures has received little attention. This control is vital to the diverse functionalities of inorganic thin films and their devices, as they rely heavily on their thicknesses. This lack of research is attributed to the technical intricacy and complexity involved in the lithographic processes. Herein, we present a generalized optical 3D printing process for inorganic nanoparticles using maskless digital light processing. We develop a range of photocurable inorganic nanoparticle inks encompassing metals, semiconductors, and oxides, combined with photolinkable ligands and photoacid generators, enabling the direct solidification of nanoparticles in the ink medium. Our process creates complex and large-area patterns with a vertical resolution of ∼50 nm, producing 50-nm-thick 2D films and several micrometer-thick 3D architectures with no layer height difference via layer-by-layer deposition. Through fabrication and operation of multilayered switching devices with Au electrodes and Ag-organic resistive layers, the feasibility of our process for cost-effective manufacturing of multilayered devices is demonstrated.

Insights into Plasmon-Induced Dimerization of Rhodanine-A Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Study

Plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) have attracted considerable interest in recent times. The PMCR initiated by hot carriers is known to be influenced by the type of metals and the excitation wavelength. Herein, we have carried out the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) investigation of rhodanine (Rd), an important pharmacologically active heterocyclic compound, adsorbed on silver and gold nanoparticles (AgNP and AuNP) using 514.5 and 632.8 nm lasers. The prominent Raman band at 1566 cm^-1 observed in the SERS spectra is attributed to the characteristic ν(C═C) stretching vibration of the Rd dimer and not of Rd tautomers. The chemical transformation of Rd to Rd dimer on metal surfaces is plausibly triggered by the indirect transfer of energetic hot electrons generated during the non-radiative decay of plasmon. The mechanism involved in the dimerization of Rd via the indirect transfer of hot electrons is also presented. The effect of wavelength on the dimerization of Rd is also observed on the AgNP surface, which indicates that the dimerization occurs more efficiently on the AgNP surface with excitation at 514.5 nm wavelength.

Adsorption of 4-Mercapto Pyridine with Gold Nanoparticles Embedded in the Langmuir-Blodgett Film Matrix of Stearic Acid: SERS, XPS Studies Aided by Born-Oppenheimer on the Fly Dynamics, Time-Resolved Wavelet Transform Theory, and DFT

This paper reports the adsorptive behavior of the 4-mercaptopyridine (4MPy) molecule soaked in gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that remain embedded in the bilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film matrix of stearic acid (SA) for various soaking times (STs). The as-fabricated substrate proved to be an efficient SERS sensing platform that can sense the analyte 4MPy molecules at trace concentrations of ∼1.0 × 10-9 M. The XPS study not only reveals the adsorption of 4Mpy molecules with AuNPs via a sulfur atom but also suggests partial degradation of the analyte molecule upon adsorption. This observation is further substantiated from the SERS spectral profile, which shows unusual broadening of the enhanced Raman bands of the molecule at higher STs. The experimental observations are supported by Born-Oppenheimer on-the-fly molecular dynamics (BO-OF-MD), time-resolved wavelet transform theory (WT), and the DFT calculations based on adcluster models. Selective enhancements of Raman bands in the SERS spectra further suggest the involvement of charge transfer (CT) interaction to the overall enhancements of Raman bands of the analyte molecule. The molecule → CT contribution has been estimated from electron density difference calculations and the corresponding CT distance; the amount of CT is also envisaged.

Conformational Selectivity of Merocyanine on Nanostructured Silver Films: Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering (SERRS) and Density Functional Theoretical (DFT) Study

In this study, detailed structural and vibrational analysis of merocyanine has been investigated using Raman, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS). The Raman, SERS and SERRS studies aided by density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations clearly established the prevalence of the trans- and cis-conformers of the protonated form of merocyanine (MCH⁺) in solid and acetonitrile solution. The binding characteristics of merocyanine adsorbed on nanostructured silver-coated films (SCFs) were investigated using excitation-dependent SERS, concentration-dependent SERRS and DFT studies. The conformers of merocyanine involved in the surface adsorption processes were recognized. The prominent marker bands observed at 1538 (ethylenic C=C stretch) and 1133 cm⁻¹ (pyridinium C-N stretch) in the Raman spectrum of merocyanine in acetonitrile shifted to 1540 and 1126 cm⁻¹, respectively on the nanostructured SCFs. The shift in the marker bands is associated with either the preferential binding of selective conformer or change in resonance equilibrium between the benzenoid and quinoid forms. The excitation wavelength dependent SERS spectrum infers that in addition to the major contribution from the electromagnetic enhancement, chemical (resonance) effect leads to the amplification of the 1540 cm⁻¹ band. The concentration-dependent SERRS study showed maximum enhancement for the nanostructured SCFs functionalized with 1 μM concentration of merocyanine, indicative of monolayer coverage. For lower concentrations of merocyanine, the SERRS signal intensity reduced without any alteration in the peak positions. The SERRS study thus, revealed sub-nanomolar (0.1 nM) sensing of merocyanine using nanostructured SCFs with the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of ∼ 10¹⁰ for the 1126 cm⁻¹ and 1540 cm⁻¹ Raman bands for MC concentration of 0.1 nM. In this study, combination of SERRS and DFT have clearly established the predominance of trans-MCH⁺ on the nanostructured silver surface with minor contribution from cis-MCH⁺, which remain exclusively bound to the surface via the phenoxyl ring O atom. This conformational surface selectivity of geometrical isomers of merocyanine using nanostructured surfaces can be further explored for energy efficient and economical separation of geometrical isomers.

Functionalized dual modification of covalent organic framework for efficient and rapid trace heavy metals removal from drinking water

A key challenge in trace heavy metals removal from drinking water by adsorption technology is to achieve high adsorption capacity and rapid uptake speed of adsorbent. Herein, we report a functionalized double modified covalent organic framework (DMTD-COF-SH) bearing high-density sulfur and nitrogen chelating groups provided simultaneously by 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) and 1,2-ethanedithiol, which was prepared via a facile one-pot thiol-ene "click" reaction. PXRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, BET and ¹³C MAS NMR confirmed their successful graft, and DMTD was found to be more easily grafted on the COF surface layer than 1,2-ethanedithiol. The as-prepared DMTD-COF-SH showed remarkable adsorption capacity and ultrafast uptake dynamics to trace heavy metals owing to the synergistic effects resulting from densely populated sulfur and nitrogen chelating groups within ordered COF mesopores and at the COF surface. On the basis of the drinking water treatment units standard NSF/ANSI 53-2020, when the adsorbent dosage was 10 mg/30 mL and 20 mg L^-1 calcium ions coexisted, the lead concentration decreased from initial 150 μg L^-1 to 2.89 μg L^-1 within 10 s, far below the allowable limit of world health organization (WHO) drinking water standard (10 μg L^-1), and the maximum adsorption capacity meeting the standard attained 14.22 mg g^-1. The adsorbent also exhibited excellent stability, wide applicable pH range and outstanding adsorption performance for coexisting trace lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium (VI) and copper in tap water, indicating that the DMTD-COF-SH material has excellent application prospect for trace heavy metals removal from drinking water.

Corrosion Inhibition at Scribed Locations in Coated AA2024-T3 by Cerium- and DMTD-Loaded Natural Silica Microparticles under Continuous Immersion and Wet/Dry Cyclic Exposure

Earlier studies on cerium-loaded naturally occurring silica microparticles (i.e., diatomaceous earth) demonstrated the potential to efficiently protect small scratches in epoxy-coated AA2024-T3 panels during relatively short immersion times. The current work investigates the potential of such inhibitor-loaded microparticles to protect wide and deep scribes (up to 1 mm wide) in long-time immersion testing and during cyclic (wet/dry) conditions. For this, cerium nitrate and 2,5-dimercaptothiadiazole (DMTD) were used as inorganic and organic corrosion inhibitors. The corrosion protection was evaluated using a hyphenated real-time optics/electrochemistry method and two individual local techniques measuring oxygen concentration and electrochemical impedance (LEIM) inside the scribe. SEM/EDS was used to analyze the samples after exposure. The results show significant levels of corrosion protection at damaged locations at low cerium concentrations (3.7 wt % Ce³⁺ relative to the total coating mass) during 30 days of immersion in salt solution. However, for a given scribe geometry, the protection was found to be dependent on the electrolyte volume with larger electrolyte/exposed metal ratios leading to short protection time. A partial replacement of the Ce³⁺ by DMTD in the microcarriers resulted in a higher degree of passivation than when DMTD was used alone. Wet/dry cyclic exposure tests showed that cyclic conditions can increase the buildup of stable inhibitor-containing layers in the case of cerium-loaded silica microparticles. This underlines the need for more research using wet/dry exposure conditions.

Thiadiazole-2-Thiol-5-Thione and 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-Thiadiazol Tautomerism, Conformational Stability, Vibrational Assignments, Inhibitor Efficiency and Quantum Chemical Calculations

Raman (3700–100 cm−1) and infrared (4000–400 cm−1) spectra of 2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol (DMTD) were recorded in the solid phase. Six structures (1–6) were initially proposed for DMTD as a result of thiol-thione tautomerism and internal rotation(s) of thiol group(s) around the C–S bond. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out for an isolated molecule (1–6) using density functional theory (B3LYP) and ab initio MP2(full) methods utilizing 6-31G(d) and 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets which favor thiol-thione tautomerism (structure 4). Relaxed potential energy surface scans of structure 4 revealed an additional conformer (the thiol group is out-of-plane, structure 7) using the aforementioned methods at 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. For additional verification, plane-wave solid state calculations were carried out at PW91 and PBEsol came out in favor of conformer 7. This is in agreement with the computed/observed SH in-plane bending of S-7 (959/941 cm−1) rather than the one estimated at (880 cm−1) for S-4. Moreover, the observed split IR/Raman bands were found consistent with solid state calculated frequencies of S-7 assuming two molecules per unit cell bonded via H-bonding intermolecular interactions. Aided by vibrational frequency calculations, normal coordinate analysis, force constants and potential energy distributions (PEDs), a complete vibrational assignment for the observed IR and Raman bands is proposed herein. Furthermore, we have estimated the frontier molecular orbitals and atomic charges to account for the corrosion inhibition efficiency of DMTD along with its binding sites to the metal surface. Our results are discussed herein and compared to similar molecules whenever appropriate.
