Abstract
Element doping is considered as a feasible strategy to develop efficient photocatalysts. In this study, a Ce-doped CdIn2S4 photocatalyst was prepared through a modified coprecipitation method. During the synthesis of Ce-doped CdIn2S4, the CeO2 nanorods were gradually reduced by the decomposition products of thioacetamide (TAA), and mainly existed as Ce(III) in the supernatant. This resulted in a large increase in the specific surface area of the as-obtained products, providing more exposed active sites for the reactant. Additionally, a trace amount of Ce was doped into the lattice of the CdIn2S4, resulting in a significant effect on the band structure. By tracing the roles of CeO2 during the synthesis process, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed. Benefiting from the synergistic advantages of the structural and compositional features, the optimal sample showed enhanced photocatalytic activities for the degradation of methyl orange (94.6% within 25 min) and tetracycline hydrochloride (85.6% within 120 min). The degradation rates were 13.3 times and 2.7 times higher than that of pristine CdIn2S4. This work may provide a strategy for designing metal element doped photocatalysts with good activity for pollutant removal.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical pollutant in the environmental water bodies has become a major concern, which causes adverse effect to aquatic entities. This study provides an incisive insight on the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and the development of rationally engineered g-C3N4-NiCo2O4-Zn0.3Fe2·7O4 nanocomposite for boosted photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation. The g-C3N4-NiCo2O4-Zn0.3Fe2·7O4 nanocomposite was synthesized via ultrasonication-assisted hydrothermal method. The characterization of the as-prepared material was evaluated by XPS, SEM, HR-TEM, PL, FT-IR, EIS, ESR, XRD, BET, and UV-Vis DRS techniques. Furthermore, the effect of catalytic dosage, drug dosage, and pH changes was explored, where g-C3N4-NiCo2O4-Zn0.3Fe2·7O4-10% unveiled excellent visible light photo-Fenton degradation of 92% for CIP at 140 min. The hydroxyl radicals (OH.) served as the predominant radical species on the photodegradation of CIP, which was confirmed by performing a radical scavenging test. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency was determined by six consecutive cycle tests, where the nanomaterial exhibited excellent stability with 98.5% reusable efficiency. The degradation of CIP was further scrutinized by GC-MS analysis, where the degraded intermediate products and the possible pathway were elucidated. The degraded product toxicity was determined by ECOSAR program, where the degraded products haven't exhibited any considerable toxic effects. In addition, the genotoxicity of the nanomaterial was determined by treating them with root tips of A. cepa, where it was found to be non-toxic. Here, the prepared g-C3N4-NiCo2O4-Zn0.3Fe2·7O4 nanocomposite (CNZ NCs) shows eco-friendly and excellent photo-Fenton activity for environmental applications.

Abstract
In this study, La2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts doped with different dosages of La2O3 were constructed by a facile ultrasound-assisted calcination approach. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TEM, XPS, PL and DRS to verify the composite photocatalysts’ purity and to investigate their structural, morphological and elemental composition, and their energy band. According to the results, a type of pure rod–sheet-shaped, heterostructured nanoparticle was successfully obtained. Decorated with 10% La2O3, 2 g/L of the composite sample had a 93% degradation rate for 20 mg/L tetracycline hydrochloride within 2 h under visible light at a pH of 7. After four successive photocatalytic runs, satisfactory stability and reusability was exhibited, with 70% of the tetracycline hydrochloride being removed in the final experiment. Electrons (e−), photogenerated holes (h+), superoxide radical anions (·O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the fundamental active species during the photocatalytic process and were investigated via quenching experiments. Furthermore, possible photocatalytic mechanisms were analyzed in this work.

Abstract
Molecular oxygen activated by visible light to generate radicals with high oxidation ability exhibits great potential in environmental remediation The efficacy of molecular oxygen activation mainly depends on the separation and migration efficiency of the photoinduced charge carriers. In this work, 2D/2D CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with different weight ratios were successfully fabricated by a simple electrostatic self-assembled route. The optimized sample with a weight ratio of 5:2 between CdIn2S4 and g-C3N4 showed the highest photocatalytic activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation, which also displayed good photostability. The enhancement of the photocatalytic performance could be ascribed to the 2D/2D heterostructure; this unique 2D/2D structure could promote the separation and migration of the photoinduced charge carriers, which was beneficial for molecular oxygen activation, leading to an enhancement in photocatalytic activity. This work may possibly provide a scalable way for molecular oxygen activation in photocatalysis.

Abstract
In this work, fibrous silica-titania (FST) was successfully prepared by the microemulsion method prior to the addition of three types of carbonaceous materials: graphitic-carbon nitride, g-C3N4 (CN), graphene nanoplatelets (GN), and multi-wall carbon nanotubes, MWCNT (CNT), via a solid-state microwave irradiation technique. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, FESEM, TEM, FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, N2 adsorption-desorption, XPS and ESR, while their photoactivity was examined on the degradation of toxic 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). The result demonstrated that the initial reaction rate was in the following order: CNFST (5.1 × 10-3 mM min-1) > GNFST (2.5 × 10-3 mM min-1) > CNTFST (2.3 × 10-3 mM min-1). The best performance was due to the polymeric structure of g-C3N4 with a good dispersion of C and N on the surface FST. This dispersion contributed towards an appropriate quantity of defect sites, as a consequence of the greater interaction between g-C3N4 and the FST support, that led to narrowed of band gap energy (2.98 eV to 2.10 eV). The effect of scavenger and ESR studies confirmed that the photodegradation over CNFST occurred via a Z-scheme mechanism. It is noteworthy that the addition of green carbonaceous materials on the FST markedly enhanced the photodegradation of toxic 2-CP.

Abstract
Embedding heterocycles into the skeleton of g-C3N4 has been proved to be a simple and efficient strategy for improving light response and the separation of photo-excited charges. Herein, 2-thiobarbituric acid incorporated g-C3N4 (TBA/CN) with good photocatalytic efficiency for Rh B degradation and H2 production was successfully achieved via a facile thermal copolymerization approach. The incorporation of aromatics and S atoms into the skeleton of g-C3N4 was identified via systematic characterizations. This unique structure contributed to the narrowed band-gap, extended delocalization of lone pair electrons and changed electron transition pathway, which led to the enhanced visible light utilization, accelerated charge migration and prolonged electron lifetime, subsequently resulting in the significant boost of photocatalytic activity. The optimal TBA/CN-3 sample yielded the largest Rh B degradation rate constant k value of 0.0273 min−1 and simultaneously highest rate of H2 evolution of 0.438 mmol g−1 h−1, which were almost 3.5 and 3.8 folds as fast as that of the pristine CN, respectively. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for the detailed elucidation of the process of Rh B degradation coupled with H2 production. Embedding heterocycles into the skeleton of g-C3N4 has been proved to be a simple and efficient strategy for improving light response and the separation of photo-excited charges.![]()

Abstract
A novel Z-scheme photocatalyst consisting of acidified graphitic carbon nitrogen (ag-C3N4)/carbon quantum dots/CdIn2S4 (CN/CQDs/CIS) was successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimized CN-2/CQDs-3/CIS exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic performance in the degradation of ibuprofen under visible-light irradiation. Based on a series of characterizations, the ag-C3N4 and CQDs were distributed uniformly on the surface of the cubic spinel structure of CIS, with intimate contact among the materials. This intimate heterogeneous interface facilitated the migration of photogenerated carriers, further leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance. These results also indicated that the CQDs not only connect ag-C3N4 with CIS through covalent bonds but also enhance the visible-light adsorption. According to the analysis of the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and Mott-Schottky curves, the mechanism of the Z-scheme heterojunction is proposed. The CQDs serve as electron mediators and transfer the electrons in the conduction band (CB) of ag-C3N4 to recombine with the holes in the valence band (VB) of CIS in the Z-scheme, leading to the enhanced separation efficiency of the photogenerated electrons in the CB of ag-C3N4 and the holes in the VB of CIS. The pollutant IBU was degraded by h+, ·O2- and ·OH, as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis.

Abstract
Conventionally, palm oil mill effluent (POME) was treated using open ponding system, which nevertheless long retention times and large treatment areas were required. In this report, heterogeneous photocatalysis was used to degrade the POME and simultaneously assessed the biogas formation. Characterization of the chemically prepared hierarchical porous ZnO microspheres showed that wurtzite was the predominant crystalline phase with a band gap energy of 3.22 eV. Moreover, the as-prepared ZnO were assembled by large numbers of interleaving nanosheets and formed an open porous structure. Under UV irradiation, the as-prepared ZnO demonstrated photocatalytic property on POME degradation. The WO3 and Nb2O5 decorated ZnO photocatalysts (WO3/ZnO and Nb2O5/ZnO) with improved photocatalytic performances were also prepared using a simple and rapid way. Significantly, in the presence of WO3/ZnO and Nb2O5/ZnO composites, the degradation of POME achieved 68.3% and 91.7%, respectively after 240 min irradiation. Interestingly, the assessment of the biogas formation showed that the photocatalytic reactions over Nb2O5/ZnO and WO3/ZnO composites generated higher amount of biogas products (CH4 + CO2) compared to that of ZnO. The photocatalytic enhancement was attributed to the high separation efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs based on the formation of heterojunction structures between the WO3/Nb2O5 and ZnO. The observed findings also revealed that the photocatalytic technology using hierarchical WO3/ZnO and Nb2O5/ZnO composites had the potential to efficiently treat wastewater.
