CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots-based Janus membrane with multifunction of luminescence, magnetism and aeolotropic electroconductivity

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are promising semiconductors for next-generation photoelectric devices. However, the development of perovskite QDs-based multifunctional materials still needs to be addressed in order to further advance the application of perovskite QDs. Herein, a successful synthesis of Janus microfibers array Janus membrane (JMAJM) with up-down structure and multifunction of luminescence, magnetism and electroconductivity is firstly achieved based on CsPbBr3 QDs through a parallel electrospinning. JMAJM comprises up-down two layers tightly bonded together. The up-layer of JMAJM is luminescence/magnetism Janus microfibers array (L/M-JMAJM) constructed by [CsPbBr3/polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)]//[CoFe2O4/PMMA] Janus microfibers as building elements. The down-layer of JMAJM is luminescence/electroconductivity Janus microfibers array (L/E-JMAJM) fabricated by [CsPbBr3/PMMA]//[polyaniline (PANI)/PMMA] Janus microfibers as building elements. Two independent microcosmic regions are designed and realized in a Janus microfiber, confining luminescence with magnetic or conductive substances into their respective regions, thus minimizing adverse effects of other dark-colored functional substances on the fluorescence of CsPbBr3 QDs. This peculiar Janus microfiber enables the effective separation and high integration of CsPbBr3 QDs with other functional substances. The up-down structure of JMAJM ensures a high integration of luminescence, magnetism and conductivity. Meanwhile, JMAJM addresses the environmental instability of CsPbBr3 QDs while simultaneously endows perovskite QDs-based materials with additional functions to realize multifunction. Under ultraviolet excitation, fluorescence characteristics of the CsPbBr3 QDs in JMAJM are maintained, exhibiting a vibrant green emission at 517 nm. Meanwhile, JMAJM achieves a maximum saturation magnetization of 20.32 emu·g-1, high conductance of 10-2 S and aeolotropic electroconductivity degree of 107. The combination of micro-partition with macro-partition in JMAJM receives superior concurrent luminescence-magnetic-conductive multifunction. This work provides a novel idea and strategy for advancing perovskite QDs-based multifunctional materials.

Ultra-long silver nanowires prepared via hydrothermal synthesis enable efficient transparent heaters

Ultra-long silver nanowires (AgNWs) with an aspect ratio of >2000 were prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The influence of reaction time (4-32 h), reaction temperature (150-180 °C), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) molecular weight (10 000-1 300 000 g mol^-1), PVP concentration (50-125 mM), glucose concentration (5.6-22.4 mM) and CuCl₂ concentration (2-20 μM) on the AgNW length was investigated systematically. The optimum conditions provided nanowires with an average diameter of 207 nm, an average length of 234 μm and a maximum length of 397 μm. Finally, a AgNW electrode was prepared on a glass substrate and used in transparent heater application. The transparent heater enabled outstanding heat-generating properties, reaching >200 °C within 70 s with an applied voltage of 5 V. Our results demonstrate how increasing the aspect ratio of ultra-long AgNWs is beneficial for both optical and electronic applications in terms of increased transmission and a more efficient Joule effect in the heater application. In addition, our results show that AgNWs with different lengths can be simply obtained by tuning synthesis parameters.

Conducting Polymers for the Design of Tactile Sensors

This paper provides an overview of the application of conducting polymers (CPs) used in the design of tactile sensors. While conducting polymers can be used as a base in a variety of forms, such as films, particles, matrices, and fillers, the CPs generally remain the same. This paper, first, discusses the chemical and physical properties of conducting polymers. Next, it discusses how these polymers might be involved in the conversion of mechanical effects (such as pressure, force, tension, mass, displacement, deformation, torque, crack, creep, and others) into a change in electrical resistance through a charge transfer mechanism for tactile sensing. Polypyrrole, polyaniline, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polydimethylsiloxane, and polyacetylene, as well as application examples of conducting polymers in tactile sensors, are overviewed. Attention is paid to the additives used in tactile sensor development, together with conducting polymers. There is a long list of additives and composites, used for different purposes, namely: cotton, polyurethane, PDMS, fabric, Ecoflex, Velostat, MXenes, and different forms of carbon such as graphene, MWCNT, etc. Some design aspects of the tactile sensor are highlighted. The charge transfer and operation principles of tactile sensors are discussed. Finally, some methods which have been applied for the design of sensors based on conductive polymers, are reviewed and discussed.

Recent Progress in Conducting Polymer Composite/Nanofiber-Based Strain and Pressure Sensors

The Conducting of polymers belongs to the class of polymers exhibiting excellence in electrical performances because of their intrinsic delocalized π- electrons and their tunability ranges from semi-conductive to metallic conductive regime. Conducting polymers and their composites serve greater functionality in the application of strain and pressure sensors, especially in yielding a better figure of merits, such as improved sensitivity, sensing range, durability, and mechanical robustness. The electrospinning process allows the formation of micro to nano-dimensional fibers with solution-processing attributes and offers an exciting aspect ratio by forming ultra-long fibrous structures. This review comprehensively covers the fundamentals of conducting polymers, sensor fabrication, working modes, and recent trends in achieving the sensitivity, wide-sensing range, reduced hysteresis, and durability of thin film, porous, and nanofibrous sensors. Furthermore, nanofiber and textile-based sensory device importance and its growth towards futuristic wearable electronics in a technological era was systematically reviewed to overcome the existing challenges.

Roles of TiO2 in the highly robust Au nanoparticles-TiO2 modified polyaniline electrode towards non-enzymatic sensing of glucose

Along with the rise of diabetes mellitus issue, glucose sensor has become an imperative tool for healthcare. Studies have been widely conducted on electrode materials for glucose sensors; metal nanoparticles and/or oxide particles in its nano-size are reported to exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activities in the non-enzymatic glucose sensors. However, the decoration processes of metal nanoparticles or nano-sized oxides are known to be tedious and time-consuming. In addition, the processes usually result in great amount of waste solution emission. In this study, therefore, an Au nanoparticles (NPs)-TiO₂ modified polyaniline (PANI) composite is practiced towards the applications of non-enzymatic glucose sensors, by using a facile and time-saving thermal reduction and by electrodeposition techniques with low waste solution emission. Au NPs, which is modified with TiO₂ nanoparticles in its optimized amount, performs the highest electrocatalytic activity to the oxidation of glucose in alkaline solution. The stability of Au NPs-TiO₂/PANI is superior to those of most reported results over 70 days. The sensitivity and detection limit are 379.8 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 and 0.15 μM, respectively. High selectivity of Au NPs-TiO₂/PANI is also confirmed by the interference test. Spill-over effect of OH^- between Au NPs and TiO₂, which is the main reason for the improved catalytic activity, is described in this study.

Large area flexible pressure/strain sensors and arrays using nanomaterials and printing techniques

Sensors are becoming more demanding in all spheres of human activities for their advancement in terms of fabrication and cost. Several methods of fabrication and configurations exist which provide them myriad of applications. However, the advantage of fabrication for sensors lies with bulk fabrication and processing techniques. Exhaustive study for process advancement towards miniaturization from the advent of MEMS technology has been going on and progressing at high pace and has reached a highly advanced level wherein batch production and low cost alternatives provide a competitive performance. A look back to this advancement and thus understanding the route further is essential which is the core of this review in light of nanomaterials and printed technology based sensors. A subjective appraisal of these developments in sensor architecture from the advent of MEMS technology converging present date novel materials and process technologies through this article help us understand the path further.

Rational synthesis of silver nanowires at an electrode interface by diffusion limitation

We report an approach to synthesize silver nanowires by diffusion limitation.

One-step synthesis of ultra-long silver nanowires of over 100 μm and their application in flexible transparent conductive films

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) >100 μm and even 160 μm in length have been synthesized using a facile and rationally designed solvothermal method by heating preservation at 150 °C. The length of the as-synthesized AgNWs is over 4–5 times longer than those previously reported, while the diameter range is from 40 nm to 85 nm. A transparent conducting film (TCF) was fabricated using hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as the adhesive polymer, and it achieved exceptional and stable optoelectronic properties. Its low sheet resistance of ∼19 Ω sq⁻¹ (on polyethylene terephthalate, PET) and high optical transmittance of ∼88% are superior to that of expensive indium tin oxide (ITO) films. More significantly, the AgNW network demonstrates excellent adhesion to PET substrates. This study indicates that ultra-long silver nanowires can serve as an alternative to ITO, which also demonstrates its potential application in flexible electronic devices.

Ultra-long silver nanowires (100–160 μm) were applied in flexible transparent conductive films showing low sheet resistance and high optical transmittance.
