Enhanced intersystem crossing in core-twisted aromatics

Heavy-atom-free π-twisted photosensitizers for fluorescence bioimaging and photodynamic therapy

As the field of preclinical research on photosensitizers (PSs) for anticancer photodynamic therapy (PDT) continues to expand, a focused effort is underway to develop agents with innovative molecular structures that offer enhanced targeting, selectivity, activation, and imaging capabilities. In this context, we introduce two new heavy-atom-free PSs, DBXI and DBAI, characterized by a twisted π-conjugation framework. This innovative approach enhances the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the singlet excited state (S1) and the triplet state (T1), resulting in improved and efficient intersystem crossing (ISC). Both PSs are highly effective in producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), including singlet oxygen and/or superoxide species. Additionally, they also demonstrate remarkably strong fluorescence emission. Indeed, in addition to providing exceptional photocytotoxicity, this emissive feature, generally lacking in other reported structures, allows for the precise monitoring of the PSs' distribution within specific cellular organelles even at nanomolar concentrations. These findings underscore the dual functionality of these PSs, serving as both fluorescent imaging probes and light-activated therapeutic agents, emphasizing their potential as versatile and multifunctional tools in the field of PDT.

Thiocarbonyl-Bridged N-Heterotriangulenes for Energy Efficient Triplet Photosensitization: A Theoretical Perspective

Structurally-rigid metal-free organic molecules are of high demand for various triplet harvesting applications. However, inefficient intersystem crossing (ISC) due to large singlet-triplet gap (Δ E S - T ${\Delta {E}_{S-T}}$ ) and small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between lowest excited singlet and triplet often limits their efficiency. Excited electronic states, fluorescence and ISC rates in several thiocarbonyl-bridged N-heterotriangulene ( m ${m}$ S-HTG) with systematically increased thione content (m = ${m=}$ 0-3) are investigated implementing polarization consistent time-dependent optimally-tuned range-separated hybrid. All m ${m}$ S-HTGs are dynamically stable and also thermodynamically feasible to synthesize. Relative energies of several low-lying singlets (S n ${{S}_{n}}$ ) and triplets (T n ${{T}_{n}}$ ), and their excitation nature (i. e.,n π * ${n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ orπ π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ ) and SOC are determined for these m ${m}$ S-HTGs in dichloromethane. Low-energy optical peak displays gradual red-shift with increasing thione content due to relatively smaller electronic gap resulted from greater degree of orbital delocalization. Significantly large SOC due to different orbital-symmetry and heavy-atom effect produces remarkably high ISC rates (k I S C ${{k}_{ISC}}$ ~1012 s-1) for enthalpically favouredS 1 n π * → T 2 ${{S}_{1}\left(n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}\right)\to {T}_{2}}$ (π π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ ) channel in these m ${m}$ S-HTGs, which outcompete radiative fluorescence rates (~108 s-1) even directly from higher lying optically brightπ π * ${\pi {\pi }^{^{\ast}}}$ singlets. Importantly, high energy triplet excitons of ~1.7 eV resulting from such significantly large ISC rates from non-fluorescentS 1 n π * ${{S}_{1}\left(n{\pi }^{^{\ast}}\right)}$ make these thiocarbonylated HTGs ideal candidates for energy efficient triplet harvest including triplet-photosensitization.

Helically twisted nanoribbons via stereospecific annulative π-extension reaction employing [7]helicene as a molecular wrench

Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in synthesizing atomically precise carbon nanostructures, particularly graphene nanoribbons (NRs), employing advanced synthetic methodologies. Despite these advancements, achieving control over the stereochemistry of twisted NRs has proven to be a formidable challenge. This manuscript presents a strategic approach to achieve absolute control over the single-handed helical conformation in a cove-edged NR. This strategy leverages enantiopure helicenes as a molecular wrench, intricately influencing the overall conformation of the NR. [7]helicenes stitched to the terminal K-regions of a conjugated pyrene NR through a stereospecific annulative π-extension reaction to produce a helically twisted NR with an end-to-end twist of 171°. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the impact of twisting on the conformational population was studied by quantum chemical calculations.

Core-Alkynylated Fluorescent Flippers: Altered Ultrafast Photophysics to Track Thick Membranes

Fluorescent flippers have been introduced as small-molecule probes to image membrane tension in living systems. This study describes the design, synthesis, spectroscopic and imaging properties of flippers that are elongated by one and two alkynes inserted between the push and the pull dithienothiophene domains. The resulting mechanophores combine characteristics of flippers, reporting on physical compression in the ground state, and molecular rotors, reporting on torsional motion in the excited state, to take their photophysics to new level of sophistication. Intensity ratios in broadened excitation bands from differently twisted conformers of core-alkynylated flippers thus report on mechanical compression. Lifetime boosts from ultrafast excited-state planarization and lifetime drops from competitive intersystem crossing into triplet states report on viscosity. In standard lipid bilayer membranes, core-alkynylated flippers are too long for one leaflet and tilt or extend into disordered interleaflet space, which preserves rotor-like torsional disorder and thus weak, blue-shifted fluorescence. Flipper-like planarization occurs only in highly ordered membranes of matching leaflet thickness, where they light up and selectively report on these thick membranes with red-shifted, sharpened excitation maxima, high intensity and long lifetime.

Excitation-Wavelength-Dependent Photophysics of a Torsionally Disordered Push-Pull Dye

The torsional disorder of conjugated dyes in the electronic ground state can lead to inhomogeneous broadening of the S1 ←S0 absorption band, allowing for the selective photoexcitation of molecules with different amounts of distortion. Here, we investigate how this affects electronic transitions to upper excited states. We show that torsion of a core-alkynylated push-pull dye can have opposite effects on the oscillator strength of its lowest-energy transitions. Consequently, photoselection of planar and twisted molecules can be achieved by exciting in distinct absorption bands. Whereas this has limited effect in liquids due to fast planarization of the excited molecules, it strongly affects the overall photophysics in a polymeric environment, where torsional motion is hindered, allowing for the photoselection of molecules with different fluorescence quantum yields and intersystem-crossing dynamics.

Novel Photocatalyst Based on Through-Space Charge Transfer Induced Intersystem Crossing Enables Rapid and Efficient Polymerization Under Low-Power Excitation Light

Currently, most photoredox catalysis polymerization systems are limited by high excitation power, long polymerization time, or the requirement of electron donors due to the precise design of efficient photocatalysts still poses a great challenge. Herein, we propose a new approach: the creation of efficient photocatalysts having low ground state oxidation potentials and high excited state energy levels, along with through-space charge transfer (TSCT) induced intersystem crossing (ISC) properties. A cabazole-naphthalimide (NI) dyad (NI-1) characterized by long triplet excited state lifetime (τT=62 μs), satisfactory ISC efficiency (ΦΔ=54.3 %) and powerful reduction capacity [Singlet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=-1.93 eV, Triplet: E1/2 (PC+1/*PC)=-0.84 eV] was obtained. An efficient and rapid polymerization (83 % conversion of 1 mM monomer in 30 s) was observed under the conditions of without electron donor, low excitation power (10 mW cm-2) and low catalyst (NI-1) loading (<50 μM). In contrast, the conversion rate was lower at 29 % when the reference catalyst (NI-4) was used for photopolymerization under the same conditions, demonstrating the advantage of the TSCT photocatalyst. Finally, the TSCT material was used as a photocatalyst in practical lithography for the first time, achieving pattern resolutions of up to 10 μm.

Radical enhanced intersystem crossing mechanism, electron spin dynamics of high spin states and their applications in the design of heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers

Heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers (PSs) can overcome the high cost and biological toxicity of traditional molecular systems containing heavy atoms (such as Pt(II), Ir(III), Ru(II), Pd(II), Lu(III), I, or Br atoms) and, therefore, are developing rapidly. Connecting a stable free radical to the chromophore can promote the intersystem crossing (ISC) process through electron spin exchange interaction to produce the triplet state of the chromophore or the doublet (D) and quartet (Q) states when taking the whole spin system into account. These molecular systems based on the radical enhanced ISC (REISC) mechanism are important in the field of heavy atom-free triplet PSs. The REISC system has a simple molecular structure and good biocompatibility, and it is especially helpful for building high-spin quantum states (D and Q states) that have the potential to be developed as qubits in quantum information science. This review introduces the molecular structure design for the purpose of high-spin states. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) is the most important characterization method to reveal the properties of these molecular systems, generation mechanism and electron spin polarization (ESP) of the high spin states. The spin polarization manipulation of high spin states and potential application in the field of quantum information engineering are also summarized. Moreover, molecular design principles of the REISC system to obtain long absorption wavelength, high triplet state quantum yield and long triplet state lifetime are introduced, as well as applications of the compounds in triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion, photodynamic therapy and bioimaging. This review is useful for the design of heavy atom-free triplet PSs based on the radical-chromophore molecular structure motif and the study of the photophysics of the compounds, as well as the electron spin dynamics of the multi electron system upon photoexcitation.

A nine-ring fused terrylene diimide exhibits switching between red TADF and near-IR room temperature phosphorescence

Herein, we report the first example of a terrylene diimide derivative that switches emission between thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the red region. By design, the molecule TDI-cDBT boasts a symmetrical, consecutively fused nine-ring motif with a kite-like structure. The rigid core formed by the annulated dibenzothiophene moiety favoured efficient intersystem crossing and yielded a narrow-band emission with a full-width half maxima (FWHM) of 0.09 eV, along with high colour purity. A small ΔE S1-T1 of 0.04 eV facilitated thermally activated delayed fluorescence, enhancing the quantum yield to 88% in the red region. Additionally, it also prefers a direct triplet emission from the aggregated state. The room temperature phosphorescence observed from the aggregates has a longer emission lifetime of 1.8 ms, which is further prolonged to 8 ms at 77 K in the NIR region. Thus, the current strategy is successful in not only reducing ΔE S1-T1 to favour TADF but also serves as a novel platform that can switch emission from TADF to RTP depending upon the concentration.

End-to-End Bent Perylene Bisimide Cyclophanes by Double Sulfur Extrusion

Bending inherently planar π-cores consisting of only six-membered rings has traditionally been challenging because a powerful transformation is required to compensate for the significant strain energy associated with bending. Herein, we demonstrate that sulfur extrusion can achieve substantial molecular bending of a perylene structure to form a substructure of a Vögtle belt, a proposed yet hitherto elusive carbon nanotube fragment. Bent perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives were synthesized through a double-sulfur-extrusion reaction from the corresponding sulfur-containing V-shaped precursors with an internal alkyl tether. The effect of bending the inherently planar PBI core, which is a recent topic of interest for the design of advanced organic electronic and optoelectronic materials, was investigated systematically. Increasing the curvature leads to a red shift in the absorption and emission spectra, while the fluorescence quantum yields remain high. This stands in contrast with the nonemissive features of previously reported nonplanar PBI derivatives based on conjugative tethers. Detailed photophysical measurements indicated that the increasing curvature with shorter alkyl tethers (i) slightly facilitates intersystem crossing and (ii) significantly suppresses the internal conversion in the excited state of the present bent PBI derivatives. The latter characteristics originate from the restricted dynamic motion associated with the charge-transfer (CT) character between the core chromophores and the N-aryl units.

Wavily Curved Perylene Diimides: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photovoltaic Properties

Solubility enhancement is a key issue for developing the perylene diimide-based functional materials. Introduction of curved structure proved an effective solubilizing method without employing steric repulsion. In this work, wavily curved perylene diimides were developed as a new family of highly soluble curved perylene diimides. Moreover, their conformational dynamics, aggregating properties, electronic properties, and photovoltaic performances were thoroughly examined in comparison to the previously reported isomer exhibiting an arched curvature. The waved isomer demonstrated heightened rigidity and a greater propensity for aggregation compared to the arched isomer, likely attributed to its more planar structure. Each benzoxepin unit played a role in cancelling out the curvature on the opposite side. While the difference in the molecular curvature did not cause significant alterations in the photophysical and electron-accepting properties, we identified that the modulation of the curved structure is effective in controlling the morphology of the photoelectric conversion layer.

Insights into mechanistic interpretation of crystalline-state reddish phosphorescence of non-planar π-conjugated organoboron compounds

Metal-free room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials are attracting attention in such applications as organic light-emitting diodes and bioimaging. However, the chemical structures of RTP materials reported thus far are mostly predominantly based on π-conjugated systems incorporating heavy atoms such as bromine atoms or carbonyl groups, resulting in limited structural diversity. On the other hand, triarylboranes are known for their strong Lewis acidity and deep LUMO energy levels, but few studies have reported on their RTP properties. In this study, we discovered that compounds based on a tetracyclic structure containing boron, referred to as benzo[d]dithieno[b,f]borepins, exhibit strong solid-state reddish phosphorescence even in air. Quantum chemical calculations, including those for model compounds, revealed that the loss of planarity of the tetracyclic structure increases spin-orbit coupling matrix elements, thereby accelerating the intersystem crossing process. Moreover, single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and natural energy decomposition analysis suggested that the borepin compounds without bromine or oxygen atoms, unlike typical RTP materials, exhibit red-shifted phosphorescence in the crystalline state owing to structural relaxation in the T1 state. Additionally, the borepin compounds showed potential application as bioimaging dyes.

Axially-chiral boramidine for detailed (chir)optical studies

The inclusion of boron atoms into chiral π-conjugated systems is an effective strategy to unlock unique chiroptical properties. Herein, the preparation and characterization of a configurationally stable axially-chiral boramidine are reported, showcasing absorption in the UV domain, deep-blue fluorescence (Φ up to 94%), and ca. |10-3| gabs and glum values. Detailed photophysical studies and quantum-chemical calculations clearly elucidate the deactivation pathways of the emissive state to triplet excited states, involving increased spin-orbit coupling between the lowest singlet excited state and an upper triplet state.

Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Framework with Nonplanar Porphyrin Groups for High-Efficiency Photocatalysis

Nonplanar porphyrins play crucial roles in many biological processes and chemical reactions as catalysts. However, the preparation of artificial nonplanar porphyrins suffers from complicated organic syntheses. Herein, we present a new rare-earth porphyrinic metal-organic framework (RE-PMOF), BUT-233, which is a three-dimensional (3D) framework structure with the flu topology consisting of 4-connected BBCPPP-Ph ligands H4BBCPPP-Ph = 5',5⁗-(10,20-diphenylporphyrin-5,15-diyl)bis([1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-4,4'' dicarboxylic acid) and 8-connected Eu6 clusters. Noteworthily, the porphyrin cores of the BBCPPP-Ph ligands in BUT-233 are nonplanar with a ruffle-like conformation. In contrast, the porphyrin core in the free ligand H4BBCPPP-Ph is in a nearly ideally planar conformation, as confirmed by its single-crystal structure. BUT-233 is microporous with 6-8 Å pores and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 649 m2/g, as well as high stability in common solvents. The MOF was used as a photocatalyst for the oxidation degradation of a chemical warfare agent model molecule CEES (CEES = 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide) under the light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation and an O2 atmosphere at room temperature. CEES was almost completely converted into its nontoxic light-oxidized product CEESO (CEESO = 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide) in only 5 min with t1/2 = 2 min (t1/2: half-life). Moreover, the toxic deep-oxidized product 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfone (CEESO2) was not detected. The catalytic activity of BUT-233 was high in comparison with those of some previously reported MOF catalysts. The results of photo/electrochemical property studies suggested that the high catalytic activity of BUT-233 was benefited from the presence of nonplanar porphyrin rings on its pore surface.

Nature and energetics of low-lying excited singlets/triplets and intersystem crossing rates in selone analogs of perylenediimide: A theoretical perspective

The structural rigidity and chemical diversity of the highly fluorescent perylenediimide (PDI) provide wide opportunities for developing triplet photosensitizers with sufficiently increased energy efficiency. Remarkably high intersystem crossing (ISC) rates with a complete fluorescence turn-off reported recently for several thione analogs of PDI due to substantially large spin-orbit coupling garners huge attention to develop other potential analogs. Here, several selone analogs of PDI, denoted as mSe-PDIs (m = 1-4) with varied Se content and positions, are investigated to provide a comprehensive and comparative picture down the group-16 using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT implementing optimally tuned range-separated hybrid in toluene dielectric. All mSe-PDIs are confirmed to be dynamically stable and also thermodynamically feasible to synthesize from their oxygen and thione congeners. The first excited-state singlet (S1) of mSe-PDI with relatively low Se-content (m = 1, 2) is of nπ* character with an expected fluorescence turn-off. Whereas, the ππ* nature of the S1 for 3Se-PDI and 4Se-PDI suggests a possible fluorescence turn-on in the absence of any other active nonradiative deactivation pathways. However, ∼4-6 orders greater ISC rates (∼1012-1014 s-1) than the fluorescence ones (∼108 s-1) for all mSe-PDIs signify highly efficient triplet harvest. Importantly, significantly higher ISC rates for these mSe-PDIs than their thione congeners render them efficient triplet photosensitizers.

A Self-Assembly-Induced Exciton Delocalization Strategy for Converting a Perylene Diimide Derivative from a Type-II to Type-I Photosensitizer

Type-I photosensitizers have shown advantages in addressing the shortcomings of traditional oxygen-dependent type-II photosensitizers for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of hypoxic tumors. However, developing type-I photosensitizers is yet a huge challenge because the type-II energy transfer process is much faster than the type-I electron transfer process. Herein, from the fundamental point of view, an effective approach is proposed to improve the electron transfer efficiency of the photosensitizer by lowering the internal reorganization energy and exciton binding energy via self-assembly-induced exciton delocalization. An example proof is presented by the design of a perylene diimide (PDI)-based photosensitizer (PDIMp) that can generate singlet oxygen (1O2) via a type-II energy transfer process in the monomeric state, but induce the generation of superoxide anion (O2˙-) via a type-I electron transfer process in the aggregated state. Significantly, with the addition ofcucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]), the self-assembled PDIMp can convert back to the monomeric state via host-guest complexation and consequently recover the generation of 1O2. The biological evaluations reveal that supramolecular nanoparticles (PDIMp-NPs) derived from PDIMp show superior phototherapeutic performance via synergistic type-I PDT and mild photothermal therapy (PTT) against cancer under either normoxia or hypoxia conditions.

A Rational Way to Control the Triplet State Wave Function Confinement of Organic Chromophores: Effect of the Connection Sites and Spin Density Distribution-Guided Molecular Structure Design Principles in Bodipy Dimers

To study the intersystem crossing (ISC) and the spatial confinement of the triplet excited states of organic chromophores, we prepared a series of Bodipy dimers. We found that the connection position of the two units has a significant effect on the absorption and fluorescence. Singlet oxygen quantum yields of 3.8-12.4% were observed for the dimers, which are independent of solvent polarity. Nanosecond transient absorption spectra indicate the population of long-lived triplet excited states with lifetimes (τT) of 45-454 μs. Pulsed laser-excited time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra show that the T1 triplet states are essentially delocalized, which is different from the case for the previously reported Bodipy dimers. The TREPR spectra of the triplet states imply that the delocalization over the whole dimer essentially depends on the electron density of the carbon atoms at the connection sites. This property may become a universal rule for controlling the T1 state confinement in multichromophore organic molecules.

Thia[n]helicenes with long persistent phosphorescence

Helicenes with persistent luminescence have received relatively little attention, despite their demonstrated highly efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) from the excited singlet to the triplet state. Herein, we designed a series of ortho-fused aromatics by combining dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene (DTT) with annulated benzene fragments, denoted as TB[n]H (n = 3-8), to achieve persistent luminescence. Wherein, thia[n]helicenes (n = 5-8) exhibited intense phosphorescence with millisecond-range lifetimes (τp) at 77 K. Particularly interesting was the observation that the odd-numbered ring helicenes displayed longer τp values than their neighboring even-numbered counterparts. Notably, TB[7]H showcased the longest τp of 628 ms. This phenomenon can be attributed to the more favorable ISC channels and stronger spin-orbital coupling (SOC) of old-numbered helicenes than even-numbered ones. Furthermore, both conformers of TB[7]H exhibited significant circularly polarized phosphorescent (CPP) responses, with luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) of 0.015 and -0.014. These discoveries suggest that thiahelicenes may be a specific class of organic phosphorescent and CPP materials.

Conformational, Structural, and Chiroptical Properties of an Overcrowded Triply Fused Carbo[7]helicene

Recently, the synthesis of the racemate of an overcrowded triply fused carbo[7]helicene of formula C66H36 with three carbo[7]helicenes fused within a central six-membered ring was described. This molecule was found to embed an extremely contorted central six-membered ring and two negative curvatures. We report herein the resolution of the corresponding enantiomers and their conformational, structural, photophysical, and chiroptical properties. The racemization of the triply fused carbo[7]helicene was determined to proceed at a rate of krac = 8.06 × 10-4 s-1 at 175 °C in ortho-dichlorobenzene, corresponding to a barrier to enantiomerization ΔGenant‡ = 140.4 kJ·mol-1, a value significantly lower than for pristine carbo[7]helicene. Interestingly, the crystalline structures of the racemic and enantiopure materials show some differences regarding the molecular geometry, with an increased negative curvature in the latter cases. This unusual curved delocalized π-conjugated system afforded notably green fluorescence at room temperature and far-red phosphorescence at low temperature. Finally, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence responses of the enantiopure compounds have been measured and showed very close absorption and emission dissymmetry factors, gabs and glum, respectively, of ca. 2.6 × 10-3, indicating a similar chiral rigid geometry for both ground and excited states.

High-Performance Near-Infrared Chlorinated Rylenecarboximide Fluorophores via Consecutive C-N and C-C Bond Formation

A new class of near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores, PAI, is obtained by consecutive C-N/C-C bond formation between diphenylamines and 9,10-dibromoperylenecarboximide. Owing to the rigid structure, extended π-conjugation and pronounced push-pull substitution, these fluorophores show emission maxima up to 804 nm and large Stokes shifts. The extraordinarily high fluorescence quantum yields from 47 % to 70 % are attributed to chloro substitution in the bay positions of the perylene core. These characteristics, together with high photostability, qualify them as useful NIR emitters for applications as biomarkers and security inks.

Critical assessment of selenourea as an efficient small molecule fluorescence quenching probe to monitor protein dynamics

Organoselenium compounds have recently been the experimentalists' delight due to their broad applications in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and materials science. Selenium atom replacement of the carbonyl oxygen of the urea moiety dramatically reduces the HOMO-LUMO gap and oxidation potential, which completely changes the physicochemical properties of selenocarbonyl compounds. To our surprise, the photophysics and utility of a simple molecule such as selenourea (SeU) have not been explored in detail, which persuaded us to investigate its role in excited state processes. The steady-state emission, temperature-dependent time-correlated single photon counting, and femtosecond fluorescence upconversion experimental results confirmed that SeU significantly enhances the fluorescence quenching through a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism with an ∼10 ps ultrafast intrinsic PET lifetime component which is mostly absent in thiourea (TU). A wide range of fluorophores, based on their different redox abilities and fluorescence lifetimes covering a broad spectral window (λex: 390-590 nm and λem: 490-690 nm), were chosen to validate the proof of the concept. It was extended to tetramethylrhodamine (TMR)-5-maleimide labeled lysozyme protein, where we observed significant fluorescence quenching in the presence of SeU. The present work emphasizes that the high quenching efficiency with an ultrafast PET process, reduced orbital energy gap, and higher negative free energy change of the electron transfer reaction are the representative characteristics of selenourea or selenoamides to enable them as potential surrogates of thioamides or oxoamides quenching probes to monitor protein conformational changes and dynamics.

Unveiling the intersystem crossing dynamics in N-annulated perylene bisimides

The efficient population of the triplet excited states in heavy metal-free organic chromophores has been one of the long-standing research problems to molecular photochemists. The negligible spin-orbit coupling matrix elements in the purely organic chromophores and the large singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES-T) pose a hurdle for ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC). Herein we report the unprecedented population of triplet manifold in a series of nitrogen-annulated perylene bisimide chromophores (NPBI and Br-NPBI). NPBI is found to have a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (Φf = 68 ± 5%), whereas Br-NPBI showcased a low fluorescence quantum yield (Φf = 2.0 ± 0.6%) in toluene. The femtosecond transient absorption measurements of Br-NPBI revealed ultrafast ISC (kISC = 1.97 × 1010 s-1) from the initially populated singlet excited state to the long-lived triplet excited states. The triplet quantum yields (ΦT = 95.2 ± 4.6% for Br-NPBI, ΦT = 18.7 ± 2.3% for NPBI) calculated from nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements showed the enhancement in triplet population upon bromine substitution. The quantum chemical calculations revealed the explicit role of nitrogen annulation in tuning the excited state energy levels to favor the ISC. The near degeneracy between the singlet and triplet excited states observed in NPBI and Br-NPBI (ΔES-T = -0.01 eV for NPBI, ΔES-T = 0.03 eV for Br-NPBI) facilitates the spin flipping in the molecules. Nitrogen annulation emerges as a design strategy to open up the ISC pathway and the rate of which can be further enhanced by the substitution of a heavier element.

π-Extended benzo[1,2:4,5]di[7]annulene bis(dicarboximide)s - a new class of non-alternant polycyclic aromatic dicarboximides

Aromatic dicarboximides are a class of molecules represented by the well-known rylene bis(dicarboximide)s, in particular perylene or naphthalene bis(dicarboximide)s, which show pronounced optoelectronic properties and are applied as color pigments, fluorescent dyes and organic semiconductors. Herein we extend the family of aromatic bis(dicarboximide)s and report the synthesis of the first series of non-alternant aromatic dicarboximides by twofold Pd-catalyzed [5 + 2] annulation. Characterization by UV/vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements give insight into the optoelectronic characteristics of the hitherto unexplored substance class of heptagon-containing imides. Theoretical studies by nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) XY-scans and anisotropy of the induced current density (ACID) plots demonstrate the influence of both the non-alternant carbon framework and the imide moieties on aromaticity of the synthesized bisimides.

Zipping up tetraazaperylene: synthesis of tetraazacoronenes via double coupling in the bay positions

Substituted tetraazacoronene fluorophores have been obtained selectively by double Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling of symmetrically substituted 1,2-bis(pinacolatoboryl)alkenes with a bay-substituted octaazaperopyrenedioxide (OAPPDO). Subsequent Scholl reaction of the dimethoxyphenylated derivative allowed further π-extension of the azaperylene core, yielding a highly redox-active bis(phenanthro)tetraazacoronene.

Fusing perylene diimide with helicenes

Incorporating perylene diimide (PDI) units into helicene structures has become a useful strategy for giving access to non-planar electron acceptors as well as a method of creating molecules with unique and intriguing chiroptical properties. This minireview describes this fusion of PDIs with helicenes.

Symmetry-Breaking Charge Separation in a Chiral Bis(perylenediimide) Probed at Ensemble and Single-Molecule Levels

Chiral molecular assemblies exhibiting symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) are potential candidates for the development of chiral organic semiconductors. Herein, we explore the excited-state dynamics of a helically chiral perylenediimide bichromophore (Cy-PDI2) exhibiting SB-CS at the ensemble and single-molecule levels. Solvent polarity-tunable interchromophoric excitonic coupling in chiral Cy-PDI2 facilitates the interplay of SB-CS and excimer formation in the ensemble domain. Analogous to the excited-state dynamics of Cy-PDI2 at the ensemble level, single-molecule fluorescence lifetime traces of Cy-PDI2 depicted long-lived off-states characteristic of the radical ion pair-mediated dark states. The discrete electron transfer and charge separation dynamics in Cy-PDI2 at the single-molecule level are governed by the distinct influence of the local environment. The present study aims at understanding the fundamental excited-state dynamics in chiral organic bichromophores for designing efficient chiral organic semiconductors and applications toward charge transport materials.

Merging of Azulene and Perylene Diimide for Optical pH Sensors

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have emerged as promising materials for organic electronics, including organic photovoltaics (OPVs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Particularly, non-hexagonal ring-fused PAHs are highly desirable due to their unique optoelectronic properties. Herein, a new redox-active azulene-perylene diimide triad 1 and its ring-fused counterpart, diazulenocoronene diimide 2, were synthesized and fully characterized by a combination of NMR, cyclic voltammetry, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Direct comparison of their electronic properties leads us to the conclusion that a significant change in the localization of HOMO and LUMO occurs upon the fusion of azulene and perylene diimide in 2, leading to the lack of intramolecular charge-transfer character for transitions in the visible spectral region. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations were performed to gain further insight into various electronic transitions. Moreover, we found that the adaptive response to acids and bases manifests itself in a reversible two-color change that can be attributed to changes in the chemical structures. Our findings pave the way for manipulating the relative HOMO and LUMO energy levels of organic chromophores by fusing non-alternant azulenes to an otherwise flat PAH, which could possibly lead to applications in organic electronics and optical sensors.

Curved Nanographenes: Multiple Emission, Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence, and Non-Radiative Decay

The intriguing and rich photophysical properties of three curved nanographenes (CNG 6, 7, and 8) are investigated by time-resolved and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. CNG 7 and 8 exhibit dual fluorescence, as well as dual phosphorescence at low temperature in the main PL bands. In addition, hot bands are detected in fluorescence as well as phosphorescence, and, in the narrow temperature range of 100-140 K, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with lifetimes on the millisecond time-scale is observed. These findings are rationalized by quantum-chemical simulations, which predict a single minimum of the S1 potential of CNG 6, but two S1 minima for CNG 7 and CNG 8, with considerable geometric reorganization between them, in agreement with the experimental findings. Additionally, a higher-lying S2 minimum close to S1 is optimized for the three CNG, from where emission is also possible due to thermal activation and, hence, non-Kasha behavior. The presence of higher-lying dark triplet states close to the S1 minima provides mechanistic evidence for the TADF phenomena observed. Non-radiative decay of the T1 state appears to be thermally activated with activation energies of roughly 100 meV and leads to disappearance of phosphorescence and TADF at T > 140 K.

Effect of Chalcogenophenes on Chiroptical Activity of Twisted Tetracenes: Computational Analysis, Synthesis and Crystal Structure Thereof

The synthesis of multiply substituted acenes is still a relevant research problem, considering their applications and future potential. Here we present an elegant synthetic protocol to afford tetra-peri-substituted naphthalene and tetracene from their tetrahalo derivatives by a Pd(0)-catalyzed C-C cross-coupling method in a single step. The newly synthesized tetracenes were characterized by NMR, HRMS, UV-vis spectrophotometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). In addition, the first systematic computational study of the effect of chalcogenophenyl substitutions on the chiroptical properties of twistacenes was reported here. The gas phase computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) on a series of chalcogenophene-substituted tetracenes revealed that their chiroptical activity could be systematically increased via the atomistic tuning of peripheral substituents.

Origin of intersystem crossing in highly distorted organic molecules: a case study with red light-absorbing N,N,O,O-boron-chelated Bodipys

To explore the relationship between the twisted π-conjugation framework of aromatic chromophores and the efficacy of intersystem crossing (ISC), we have studied a N,N,O,O-boron-chelated Bodipy derivative possessing a severely distorted molecular structure. Surprisingly, this chromophore is highly fluorescent, showing inefficient ISC (singlet oxygen quantum yield, Φ_Δ = 12%). These features differ from those of helical aromatic hydrocarbons, where the twisted framework promotes ISC. We attribute the inefficient ISC to a large singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_S1/T1 = 0.61 eV). This postulate is tested by critical examination of a distorted Bodipy having an anthryl unit at the meso-position, for which Φ_Δ is increased to 40%. The improved ISC yield is rationalized by the presence of a T₂ state, localized on the anthryl unit, with energy close to that of the S₁ state. The electron spin polarization phase pattern of the triplet state is (e, e, e, a, a, a), with the T_z sublevel of the T₁ state overpopulated. The small zero-field splitting D parameter (-1470 MHz) indicates that the electron spin density is delocalized over the twisted framework. It is concluded that twisting of π-conjugation framework does not necessarily induce ISC, but S₁/T_n energy matching may be a generic feature for increasing ISC for a new-generation of heavy atom-free triplet photosensitizers.

Panchromatic Light-Absorbing [70]Fullerene-Perylene-BODIPY Triad with Cascade of Energy Transfer as an Efficient Singlet Oxygen Sensitizer

A panchromatic light-absorbing [70]fullerene-perylene-BODIPY triad (C₇₀-P-B) was synthesized and applied as a heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizer for photooxidation. The photophysical processes were comprehensively investigated by the methods of steady-state spectroscopy, time-resolved spectroscopy, as well as theoretical calculations. C₇₀-P-B shows a strong absorption ability from 300-620 nm. Efficient cascading intramolecular singlet-singlet energy transfer in C₇₀-P-B was confirmed by the luminescence study. The backward triplet excited state energy transfer from C₇₀ moiety to perylene then occurs to populate ³perylene*. Thus, the triplet excited states of C₇₀-P-B are distributed on both C₇₀ and perylene moiety with lifetimes of 23 ± 1 μs and 175 ± 17 μs, respectively. C₇₀-P-B exhibits excellent photooxidation capacity, and its yield of singlet oxygen reaches 0.82. The photooxidation rate constant of C₇₀-P-B is 3.70 times that of C₇₀-Boc and 1.58 times that of MB, respectively. The results in this paper are useful for designing efficient heavy atom-free organic triplet photosensitizers for practical application in photovoltaics, photodynamic therapy, etc.

End Group Nonplanarization Enhances Phototherapy Efficacy of A-D-A Fused-Ring Photosensitizer for Tumor Phototherapy

Enhancing the phototherapy efficacy of organic photosensitizers through molecular design is a fascinating but challenging task. Herein, we propose a simple design strategy to first realize the generation of superoxide anion radical (O₂^•-) by A-D-A fused-ring photosensitizers. Through replacing one cyano group of traditional end group with an ester group, we designed a novel nonplanar end group (A unit) to synthesize a novel A-D-A photosensitizer F8CA. In a comparison with its counterpart F8CN with the traditional end group, F8CA displays more loose packing and larger spin-orbit coupling constants. The F8CA nanoparticles showed higher photodynamic activities with the generation capability of singlet oxygen (¹O₂), hydroxyl radical (^•OH), and O₂^•-, while F8CN nanoparticles could only generate ¹O₂ and ^•OH. In addition, F8CA nanoparticles still remain high photothermal conversion efficiency (61%). As a result, F8CA nanoparticles perform well in hypoxia-tolerant tumor phototherapy. This study brings an effective design thought for A-D-A photosensitizers.

Heavy Atom-Free Triplet Photosensitizers: Molecular Structure Design, Photophysical Properties and Application in Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method for the treatment of cancer, because of its advantages including a low toxicity, non-drug-resistant character, and targeting capability. From a photochemical aspect, a critical property of triplet photosensitizers (PSs) used for PDT reagents is the intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency. Conventional PDT reagents are limited to porphyrin compounds. However, these compounds are difficult to prepare, purify, and derivatize. Thus, new molecular structure paradigms are desired to develop novel, efficient, and versatile PDT reagents, especially those contain no heavy atoms, such as Pt or I, etc. Unfortunately, the ISC ability of heavy atom-free organic compounds is usually elusive, and it is difficult to predict the ISC capability of these compounds and design novel heavy atom-free PDT reagents. Herein, from a photophysical perspective, we summarize the recent developments of heavy atom-free triplet PSs, including methods based on radical-enhanced ISC (REISC, facilitated by electron spin-spin interaction), twisted π-conjugation system-induced ISC, the use of fullerene C₆₀ as an electron spin converter in antenna-C₆₀ dyads, energetically matched S₁/T_n states-enhanced ISC, etc. The application of these compounds in PDT is also briefly introduced. Most of the presented examples are the works of our research group.

Low-Temperature Luminescence in Organic Helicenes: Singlet versus Triplet State Circularly Polarized Emission

The experimental measurement of the photophysical and chiroptical properties of helicene-based π-conjugated emitters with electron-accepting (-CN, -py, -NO₂) or donating (TMS, NMe₂, NH₂) moieties is reported at low temperature (77 K). The samples exhibit strong circularly polarized phosphorescence in frozen solution of 2-MeTHF, with a luminescence dissymmetry factor reaching 1.6 × 10^-2 and a lifetime of over 0.46 s for the most active molecule, the nitro compound. The theoretical investigation shows that although the singlet (S₁) and triplet (T₁) excited-state emissions mainly arise from the helicene core, the rotatory strengths of the spin-allowed versus spin-forbidden emission have opposite signs. Further analysis of the spin-orbit coupling matrix elements shows that there is no strong mixing between S₁ and T₁, justifying the different signs of the rotatory strengths. In the case of the nitro compound, the enhanced phosphorescence emission is due to an efficient intersystem crossing.

Nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by a one-pot Suzuki coupling/intramolecular SNAr reaction

We report a new method for the synthesis of nitrogen-doped (N-doped) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by a Suzuki coupling/intramolecular S_NAr cascade reaction. A one- or two-fold [3 + 3] naphtho-annulation of halogenated aniline was conducted under Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling conditions to yield a series of fully fused N-doped PAHs. In contrast to reported methods to synthesize pyridinic or pyrrolic nitrogen-doped PAHs, our method enables preparation of PAHs doped with graphitic nitrogen, for which few reports are known in the literature. The crystal structure as well as absorption, fluorescence and electrochemical properties of these N-doped PAHs were investigated, which demonstrated the capability of N-doping to adjust optical and electronic properties and alter the LUMO energy level.

Combined Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy and Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment: A Review

Photoactivation therapy based on photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) has been identified as a tumour ablation modality for numerous cancer indications, with photosensitisers and photothermal conversion agents playing important roles in the phototherapy process, especially in recent decades. In addition, the iteration of nanotechnology has strongly promoted the development of phototherapy in tumour treatment. PDT can increase the sensitivity of tumour cells to PTT by interfering with the tumour microenvironment, whereas the heat generated by PTT can increase blood flow, improve oxygen supply and enhance the PDT therapeutic effect. In addition, tumour cell debris generated by phototherapy can serve as tumour-associated antigens, evoking antitumor immune responses. In this review, the research progress of phototherapy, and its research effects in combination with immunotherapy on the treatment of tumours are mainly outlined, and issues that may need continued attention in the future are raised.

Tailoring intersystem crossing of perylenediimide through chalcogen-substitution at bay-position: A theoretical perspective

Molecular-scale design strategies for promoting intersystem crossing (ISC) in small organic molecules are ubiquitous in developing efficient metal-free triplet photosensitizers with high triplet quantum yield (Φ_T). Air-stable and highly fluorescent perylenediimide (PDI) in its pristine form displays very small ISC compared to the fluorescence due to the large singlet-triplet gap (ΔE_S-T) and negligibly small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between the lowest singlet (S₁) and triplet state (T₁). However, its Φ_T can be tuned by different chemical and mechanical means that are capable of either directly lowering the ΔE_S-T and increasing SOC or introducing intermediate low-lying triplet states (T_n, n = 2, 3, …) between S₁ and T₁. To this end, herein, a few chalcogen (X = O, S, Se) bay-substituted PDIs (PDI-X₂) are computationally modeled aiming at introducing geometrical-strain at the PDI core and also mixing nπ* orbital character to ππ* in the lowest singlet and triplet excited states, which altogether may reduce ΔE_S-T and also improve the SOC. Our quantum-chemical calculations based on optimally tuned range-separated hybrid reveal the presence of intermediate triplet states (T_n, n = 2, 3) in between S₁ and T₁ for all three PDI-X₂ studied in dichloromethane. More importantly, PDI-X₂ shows a significantly improved ISC rate than the pristine PDI due to the combined effects stemming from the smaller ΔE_S-T and the larger SOC. The calculated ISC rates follow the order as PDI-O₂ < PDI-S₂ < PDI-Se₂. These research findings will be helpful in designing PDI based triplet photosensitizers for biomedical, sensing, and photonic applications.

Core-Twist Reduces the Triplet Formation Efficiency in Brominated Perylene Diimides

Bromination is a recent approach to achieve intersystem crossing (ISC) in perylene diimides (PDIs). Herein, we explore the triplet formation dynamics in two tetrabrominated PDI (PDI-Br₄) positional isomers with planar (P-PDI) and twisted (T-PDI) π-conjugated frameworks. In contrast to the known effect where the planar geometry favors fluorescence, T-PDI shows higher fluorescence (ϕ_f = 0.64) than the planar counterpart P-PDI (ϕ_f = 0.42). P-PDI possesses near-degenerate S₁ and T₃/T₄ states and a larger spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Core-twisting has a pronounced effect on the absorption spectra due to symmetry breaking and would open up multiple ISC pathways, albeit with a lower SOC. Low-energy singlet-triplet state crossings within the Franck-Condon region would facilitate ultrafast triplet generation via the S₁-T₃/T₄ ISC pathway in P-PDI. In comparison, such crossings occur at relatively higher energy, reducing the triplet formation efficiency in T-PDI.

Excimer evolution hampers symmetry-broken charge-separated states

Achieving long-lived symmetry-broken charge-separated states in chromophoric assemblies is quintessential for enhanced performance of artificial photosynthetic mimics. However, the occurrence of energy trap states hinders exciton and charge transport across photovoltaic devices, diminishing power conversion efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate unprecedented excimer formation in the relaxed excited-state geometry of bichromophoric systems impeding the lifetime of symmetry-broken charge-separated states. Core-annulated perylenediimide dimers (SC-SPDI2 and SC-NPDI2) prefer a near-orthogonal arrangement in the ground state and a π-stacked foldamer structure in the excited state. The prospect of an excimer-like state in the foldameric arrangement of SC-SPDI2 and SC-NPDI2 has been rationalized by fragment-based excited state analysis and temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements. Effective electronic coupling matrix elements in the Franck-Condon geometry of SC-SPDI2 and SC-NPDI2 facilitate solvation-assisted ultrafast symmetry-breaking charge-separation (SB-CS) in a high dielectric environment, in contrast to unrelaxed excimer formation (Ex*) in a low dielectric environment. Subsequently, the SB-CS state dissociates into an undesired relaxed excimer state (Ex) due to configuration mixing of a Frenkel exciton (FE) and charge-separated state in the foldamer structure, downgrading the efficacy of the charge-separated state. The decay rate constant of the FE to SB-CS (k FE→SB-CS) in polar solvents is 8-17 fold faster than that of direct Ex* formation (k FE→Ex*) in non-polar solvent (k FE→SB-CS≫k FE→Ex*), characterized by femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) spectroscopy. The present investigation establishes the impact of detrimental excimer formation on the persistence of the SB-CS state in chromophoric dimers and offers the requisite of conformational rigidity as one of the potential design principles for developing advanced molecular photovoltaics.

π-Expansion of 2,3,6,7-Tetraazanaphthalene with Two Embedded Heptagons: Highly Twisted Structure and Lone-Pair/π* Interaction in the Crystal

Synthesis and characterization of doubly diphenylene-fused 2,3,6,7-tetraazanaphthalene 1 are described. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed the highly twisted structure of 1 with a degree of twisting of 13.0°/Å, which is one of the largest values for a π-system. In the crystal, molecules of 1 formed an orthogonal one-dimensional column with π-stacking of diphenylene moieties and a short intermolecular C···N distance due to lone-pair/π* interaction, which is a rare example of lone-pair/π* interaction in a supramolecular assembly.

Rational Design of Photocatalysts for Controlled Polymerization: Effect of Structures on Photocatalytic Activities

Over the past decade, the use of photocatalysts (PCs) in controlled polymerization has brought new opportunities in sophisticated macromolecular synthesis. However, the selection of PCs in these systems has been typically based on laborious trial-and-error strategies. To tackle this limitation, computer-guided rational design of PCs based on knowledge of structure-property-performance relationships has emerged. These rational strategies provide rapid and economic methodologies for tuning the performance and functionality of a polymerization system, thus providing further opportunities for polymer science. This review provides an overview of PCs employed in photocontrolled polymerization systems and summarizes their progression from early systems to the current state-of-the-art. Background theories on electronic transitions are also introduced to establish the structure-property-performance relationships from a perspective of quantum chemistry. Typical examples for each type of structure-property relationships are then presented to enlighten future design of PCs for photocontrolled polymerization.

Electron-Deficient Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon via One-Pot Annulative π-Extension of Perylene Diimide

The synthesis of a class of contorted electron-deficient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been achieved by a one-pot bay annulation of perylene diimide involving a mild Suzuki coupling and subsequent air-mediated, ambient-light-induced photocyclization. X-ray crystallography unambiguously confirmed the contorted PAH structure bearing four imide groups. The photophysical and electronic properties of these contorted PAHs were also analyzed, showing a high fluorescence quantum yield of 86% and moderate electron mobility of 0.017 cm² V^-1 s^-1.

Dynamics of Excitons in Conjugated Molecules and Organic Semiconductor Systems

The exciton, an excited electron-hole pair bound by Coulomb attraction, plays a key role in photophysics of organic molecules and drives practically important phenomena such as photoinduced mechanical motions of a molecule, photochemical conversions, energy transfer, generation of free charge carriers, etc. Its behavior in extended π-conjugated molecules and disordered organic films is very different and very rich compared with exciton behavior in inorganic semiconductor crystals. Due to the high degree of variability of organic systems themselves, the exciton not only exerts changes on molecules that carry it but undergoes its own changes during all phases of its lifetime, that is, birth, conversion and transport, and decay. The goal of this review is to give a systematic and comprehensive view on exciton behavior in π-conjugated molecules and molecular assemblies at all phases of exciton evolution with emphasis on rates typical for this dynamic picture and various consequences of the above dynamics. To uncover the rich variety of exciton behavior, details of exciton formation, exciton transport, exciton energy conversion, direct and reverse intersystem crossing, and radiative and nonradiative decay are considered in different systems, where these processes lead to or are influenced by static and dynamic disorder, charge distribution symmetry breaking, photoinduced reactions, electron and proton transfer, structural rearrangements, exciton coupling with vibrations and intermediate particles, and exciton dissociation and annihilation as well.

Tuning the aromatic backbone twist in dipyrrolonaphthyridinediones

This communication describes the photophysical behavior of three analogs of cyclophane bearing the dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione (DPND) core. In these molecules, intersystem crossing (ISC) can be successfully induced by distinct changes in the deviation from planarity within the DPND core, allowing at the same time the emission maximum to shift from the green to red region of the visible spectrum without any synthetic modifications of the chromophore structure. This finding may build the foundation for a new paradigm for inducing ISC-type transitions within other centrosymmetric and planar cross-conjugated chromophores.

Exciton interactions in helical crystals of a hydrogen-bonded eumelanin monomer

Eumelanin, a naturally occurring group of heterogeneous polymers/aggregates providing photoprotection to living organisms, consist of 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) building blocks. Despite their prevalence in the animal world, the structure and therefore the mechanism behind the photoprotective broadband absorption and non-radiative decay of eumelanin remain largely unknown. As a small step towards solving the incessant mystery, DHI is crystallized in a non-protic solvent environment to obtain DHI crystals having a helical packing motif. The present approach reflects the solitary directional effect of hydrogen bonds between the DHI chromophores for generating the crystalline assembly and filters out any involvement of the surrounding solvent environment. The DHI single crystals having an atypical chiral packing motif (P212121 Sohncke space group) incorporate enantiomeric zig-zag helical stacks arranged in a herringbone fashion with respect to each other. Each of the zig-zag helical stacks originates from a bifurcated hydrogen bonding interaction between the hydroxyl substituents in adjacent DHI chromophores which act as the backbone structure for the helical assembly. Fragment-based excited state analysis performed on the DHI crystalline assembly demonstrates exciton delocalization along the DHI units that connect each enantiomeric helical stack while, within each stack, the excitons remain localized. Fascinatingly, over the time evolution for generation of single-crystals of the DHI-monomer, mesoscopic double-helical crystals are formed, possibly attributed to the presence of covalently connected DHI trimers in chloroform solution. The oligomeric DHI (in line with the chemical disorder model) along with the characteristic crystalline packing observed for DHI provides insights into the broadband absorption feature exhibited by the chromophore.

The impact of twisting on the intersystem crossing in acenes: an experimental and computational study

Due to their unique excited state dynamics, acenes play a dominant role in optoelectronic and light-harvesting applications. Their optical and electronic properties are typically tailored by side-group engineering, which often result in distortion of the acene core from planarity. However, the effect of such distortion on their excited state dynamics is not clear. In this work, we investigate the effect of twisting on the photophysics of acenes, which are helically locked to a defined twist angle by tethers of different lengths. Ultrafast transient absorption and time resolved fluorescence show a clear dependence of the rate of intersystem crossing with twisting. This trend is explained using quantum chemical calculations, showing an increase of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). At much earlier times, structural reorganization in S₁, including coherent vibrational wave packet motions, is reflected in transient spectral changes. As predicted by theory, decreasing the length of diagonal tether induces enhanced activity and frequency blue-shifting of a normal vibration consisting of anthracene twisting against restraint of the tethering chain. Overall, these results serve as design principles for tuning photophysical properties of acenes via controlled twisting of their aromatic core.
