Metal-organic framework-based materials: superior adsorbents for the capture of toxic and radioactive metal ions

Promoting capillary microextraction of six organic nitrogen pesticides in water samples using versatile ZIF-8 hybrid monolithic column

Because of rapid industrialization and agriculturalization, solving the pressing problems of environment pollution, especially water and food quality, requires innovative solutions. In this paper, a novel and versatile metal-organic framework (ZIF-8)-hybrid monolithic column (ZIF-HMC) was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) of organic nitrogen pesticides (ONPs). The prepared monolithic columns had superior adsorption sites, high porosity, excellent permeability, and ideal specific surface area based on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermal Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and N2 adsorption-desorption. The ZIF-HMC contained a large number of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, benzene rings and ZIF-8, which could synergistically promote the adsorption efficiency of ONPs through multiple interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π accumulation, hydrophobic interactions, cation-π interactions, and pore adsorption by MOFs. Under the optimal conditions, a simple, efficient, and sensitive method for the analysis of six organic pesticides in environmental water samples was developed by using the ZIF-HMC as the extraction medium coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV). The method had a wide linear range (0.63-1000 μg L-1), a low detection limit (0.19-1.91 μg L-1) and satisfactory recoveries (87.4 %-110.2 %), the linear correlation coefficient was (R2) 0.9972-0.9995 and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was less than 2.64 %. The study had demonstrated the potential application of the developed method for the enrichment and analysis of organic pesticides in complex matrices of environmental samples, as well as the feasibility of MOFs materials for IT-SPME sample preparation.

Heavy Metal-Based Toxic Oxo-Pollutants Sequestration by Advanced Functional Porous Materials for Safe Drinking Water

ConspectusWater scarcity as a consequence of either environmental or economic actions is the most compelling global concern of the 21st century, as ∼2 billion people (26% of the total population) struggle to access safe drinking water and ∼3.6 billion (46% of the total population) lack access to clean water sanitation. In this context, groundwater pollution by toxic heavy metals and/or their oxo-pollutants, such as CrO42-, Cr2O72-, AsO43-, SeO32-, SeO42-, TcO4-, UO22+, etc., have been becoming rapidly growing global concerns. The severe toxicity upon bioaccumulation of these oxo-anions has prompted the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to mark these persistent and hazardous substances as priority pollutants. Additionally, the heavy-metal-based pollutants are difficult to transform into eco-friendly substances, thus presenting serious challenges toward human health and environmental preservation. To this end, the emergence of advanced functional porous materials (AFPMs), including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic polyhedrons (MOPs), porous organic polymers (POPs), etc., have presented extraordinary opportunities in material research and water treatment applications. The liberty in designing and structural tunability of AFPMs, facilitated by utilization of structure-encoded molecular building blocks, enables precise control over target-specificity and structure-property correlations. Bridging the gap between strategic material design and on-demand real-world application can facilitate the development of next-generation sorbents/ion-exchangers for efficient water treatment.In this Account, we summarize the recent advancements from our group toward the development of cutting-edge multifunctional ionic-porous sorbents, offering viable solutions toward providing clean and safe drinking water. Our vision allows us to comprehend this challenge through two strategic factors: efficient oxo-anion capture via ion-exchange and specific host-guest interactions via installation of modular functional groups. To provide an overview, we first highlight the different structural variants and coexistance of various toxic oxo-anions depending on the pH of the medium and their adverse effects. Next, we highlight the promising potential of water stable cationic MOFs toward selective remediation of toxic Cr(VI), Mn(VII), Tc(VI), Se(IV), Se(VI), U (VI), As(III), and As(V)-based toxic oxo-pollutants from water. In the subsequent sections, we summarize the target-specific design strategies and oxo-anion remediation performances of ionic porous organic polymers and hybrid functional porous materials. The key role of target-specific designability and/or structural fine-tuning of AFPMs toward preferential sorption of oxo-pollutants is systematically demonstrate. Particularly, the role of ion-exchange (anion-exchange) processes toward targeted oxo-pollutant capture by ionic AFPMs has been discussed in details. In several examples, the AFPMs were successful in reducing the toxic oxo-anion concentration levels lower than the permitted values for drinking water by the World Health Organizing Committee (WHO), showcasing their real-world applicability potency.Our contemporaneous endeavors in exploring ionic AFPMs for selective toxic oxo-anion sequestration may serve as a blueprint to researchers for future development of the next generation sorbent materials for energy-economically feasible water treatment methods.

In2O3/Bi2O3 interface induces ultra-stable carbon dioxide electroreduction on heterogeneous InBiOx catalyst

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERCO2) has emerged as one of the most promising methods for achieving both renewable energy storage and CO2 recovery. However, achieving both high selectivity and stability of catalysts remains a significant challenge. To address this challenge, this study investigated the selective synthesis of formate via ERCO2 at the interface of In2O3 and Bi2O3 in the InBiO6 composite material. Moreover, InBiO6 was synthesized using indium-based metal-organic frameworks as precursor, which underwent continuous processing through ion exchange and thermal reduction. The results revealed that the formate Faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of InBiO6 reached nearly 100 % at -0.86 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and remained above 90 % after continuous 317-h electrolysis, which exceeded those of previously reported indium-based catalysts. Additionally, the InBiO6 composite material exhibited an FEformate exceeding 80 % across a wide potential range of 500 mV from -0.76 to -1.26 V vs. RHE. Density-functional theory analysis confirmed that the heterogeneous interface of InBiO6 played a role in achieving optimal free energies for *OCHO on its surface. Furthermore, the addition of Bi to the InBiO6 matrix facilitated electron transfer and altered the electronic structure of In2O3, thereby enhancing the adsorption, decomposition, and formate production of *OCHO.

Luminescent Ln-MOFs for Chemical Sensing Application on Biomolecules

At present, the application of rare-earth organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) in fluorescence sensing has entered rapid development and shown great potential in various analytical fields, such as environmental analysis, food analysis, drug analysis, and biological and clinical analysis by utilizing their internal porosity, tunable structural size, and energy transfer between rare-earth ions, ligands, and photosensitizer molecules. In addition, because the luminescence properties of rare-earth ions are highly dependent on the structural details of the coordination environment surrounding the rare-earth ions, and although their excitation lifetimes are long, they are usually not burst by oxygen and can provide an effective platform for chemical sensing. In order to further promote the development of fluorescence sensing technology based on Ln-MOFs, we summarize and review in detail the latest progress of the construction of Ln-MOF materials for fluorescence sensing applications and related sensor components, including design strategies, preparation methods, and modification considerations and initially propose the future development prospects and prospects.

Chitosan-based aerogels: A new paradigm of advanced green materials for remediation of contaminated water

Chitosan (CS) aerogels are highly porous (∼99 %), exhibit ultralow density, and are excellent sorbents for removing ionic pollutants and oils/organic solvents from water. Their abundant hydroxyl and amino groups facilitate the adsorption of ionic pollutants through electrostatic interaction, complexation and chelation mechanisms. Selection of suitable surface wettability is the way to separate oils/organic solvents from water. This review summarizes the most recent developments in improving the adsorption performance, mechanical strength and regeneration of CS aerogels. The structure of the paper follows the extraction of chitosan, preparation and sorption characteristics of CS aerogels for heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and oils/organic solvents, sequentially. A detailed analysis of the parameters that influence the adsorption/absorption performance of CS aerogels is carried out and their effective control for improving the performance is suggested. The analysis of research outcomes of the recently published data came up with some interesting facts that the unidirectional pore structure and characteristics of the functional group of the aerogel and pH of the adsorbate have led to the enhanced adsorption performance of the CS aerogel. Finally, the excerpts of the literature survey highlighting the difficulties and potential of CS aerogels for water remediation are proposed.

Co-immobilization of a bi-enzymatic cascade into hierarchically porous MIL-53 for efficient 6'-sialyllactose production

6'-Sialyllactose (6'-SL), the most abundant sialylated human milk oligosaccharide, has attracted attention for its potential application in supplementary infant formulas. Herein, we report a facile strategy to construct a cascade bioreactor for the enzymatic synthesis of 6'-SL by co-immobilizing an enzymatic module consisting of CMP-sialic acid synthase and α-2,6-sialyltransferase into hierarchically porous MIL-53 (HP-MIL-53). The as-prepared HP-MIL-53 showed high enzyme immobilization capacity, reaching 226 mg g-1. Furthermore, the co-immobilized enzymes exhibited higher initial catalytic efficiency, and thermal, pH and storage stability than the free ones. Finally, the 6'-SL yield remained >80% after 13 cycles of use. We expect that HP-MIL-53 would have potential industrial applications in the enzymatic modular synthesis of 6'-SL and other glycans.

Selective removal of copper from complex biological media with an agarose-immobilized high-affinity PSP ligand

The elucidation of metal-dependent biological processes requires selective reagents for manipulating metal ion levels within biological solutions such as growth media or cell lysates. To this end, we immobilized a phosphine sulfide-stabilized phosphine (PSP) ligand on agarose to create a resin for the selective removal of copper from chemically complex biological media through simple filtration or centrifugation. Comprised of a conformationally preorganized phenylene-bridged backbone, the PSP-ligand binds Cu(I) with a 1:1 stoichiometry and exhibits a pH-independent Cu(I) dissociation constant in the low zeptomolar range. Neither Zn(II), Fe(II), nor Mn(II) interact with the ligand at millimolar concentrations, thus offering a much-improved selectivity towards copper over other commonly employed solid-supported chelators such as Chelex 100. As revealed by X-ray fluorescence elemental analysis, the immobilized chelator effectively removes copper from cell culture growth media and cell lysate isolated from mouse fibroblasts. In addition to preparing copper-depleted media or cell lysates for biological studies, PSP-immobilized ligands might prove equally useful for applications in radiochemistry, materials science, and environmental science.

Efficient enrichment of uranium (VI) in aqueous solution using magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide composite phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar: Mechanism and adsorption

This study presents the successful synthesis of Magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide composite phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar for efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. A novel synthesis approach involving phosphate thermal polymerization-hydrothermal method was employed, deviating from conventional pyrolysis methods, to produce hydrothermal biochar. The combination of solvent thermal polymerization technique with hydrothermal process facilitated efficient loading of layered double hydroxide (LDH) components onto the biochar surface, ensuring simplicity, low energy consumption and enhanced modifiability. Bamboo waste was utilized as the precursor for biochar, highlighting its superior green and sustainable characteristics. Additionally, this study elucidated the interactions between phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar and LDH components with U(VI). Physicochemical analysis demonstrated that the composite biochar possessed a high surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. XPS and FTIR analyses confirmed the efficient adsorption of U(VI), attributed to chelation interactions between phosphate groups, magnesium hydroxyl groups, hydroxyl groups and U(VI), as well as the co-precipitation of U(VI) with multi-hydroxyl aluminum cations captured by LDH. The composite biochar reached adsorption equilibrium with U(VI) within 80 min and exhibited excellent fitting to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Under conditions of pH = 4 and 298 K, it displayed significantly high maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 388.81 mg g⁻1, surpassing untreated biochar by 17-fold. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous and even after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the removal efficiency of U(VI) remained stable at 75.46%. These findings underscore the promising application prospects of Magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide composite phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar in efficiently separating U(VI) from uranium-containing wastewater, emphasizing its environmental and economic value.

Developing a magnetic SERS nanosensor utilizing aminated Fe-Based MOF for ultrasensitive trace detection of organophosphorus pesticides in apple juice

The unreasonable use of organophosphorus pesticides leads to excessive pesticide residues in food, seriously threatening public health, and the potential of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology, incorporating a metal-organic framework, is substantial for the rapid detection of trace pesticide residues. Here, a novel Fe3O4@NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Ag (FNMA) SERS nanosensor was developed. Results indicated that the FNMA had a high enhancement factor of 1.53 × 108, a low limit of detection (LOD) of 4.55 × 10-12 M, and a relative standard deviation of 7.73 % for 4-nitrothiophenol, demonstrating its good SERS sensitivity and uniformity, and also possessed good storage stability for one month. In quantifying fenthion and methyl parathion in standard solutions and apple juice in the range of 0.05/0.02-20 mg/L, it showed LODs of 3.02 × 10-3 mg/L and 1.43 × 10-3 mg/L, and 0.0407 and 0.0075 mg/L, respectively, demonstrating potentials in ultrasensitive trace detection of pesticides in food.

Hydroxide-Derived Nanostructures: Scalable Synthesis, Characterization, Properties, and Potential Applications

Metal oxide nanostructures have received an increasing attention owing to their unique chemical and physical properties along with their widespread applications in various fields. This article provides an overview of the recent discovery - christened Hydroxides-Derived Nanostructures, or HDNs - in which hydroxide aqueous solutions (mostly tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAH) are reacted at temperatures < 100 °C and under atmospheric pressure with various metal-containing precursors to scalably prepare novel metal oxide nanostructures. In one case, a dozen commercial and earth abundant Ti-containing powders such as binary carbides, nitrides, borides, among others, are converted into new, 1D TiO2-based lepidocrocite (1DL) nanofilaments (NFs). Application-wise, the 1DLs show outstanding performance in a number of energy, environmental, and biomedical fields such as photo- and electrocatalysis, water splitting, lithium-sulfur and lithium-ion batteries, water purification, dye degradation, cancer therapy, and polymer composites. In addition to 1DL, the HDNs family encompasses other metal oxides nanostructures including magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and MnO2 birnessite-based crystalline 2D flakes. The latter showed promise in electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications. The developed recipe provides a new vista in the molecular self-assembly synthesis of nanomaterials that can advance the field with a library of novel nanostructures with substantial implications in a multitude of fields.

Recent developments of (bio)-sensors for detection of main microbiological and non-biological pollutants in plastic bottled water samples: A critical review

The importance of water in all biological processes is undeniable. Ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water is crucial for maintaining sustainable water resources. To elaborate, the consumption of water of inadequate quality can have a repercussion on human health. Furthermore, according to the instability of tap water quality, the consumption rate of bottled water is increasing every day at the global level. Although most people believe bottled water is safe, it can also be contaminated by microbiological or chemical pollution, which can increase the risk of disease. Over the last decades, several conventional analytical tools applied to analyze the contamination of bottled water. On the other hand, some limitations restrict their application in this field. Therefore, biosensors, as emerging analytical method, attract tremendous attention for detection both microbial and chemical contamination of bottled water. Biosensors enjoy several facilities including selectivity, affordability, and sensitivity. In this review, the developed biosensors for analyzing contamination of bottled water were highlighted, as along with working strategies, pros and cons of studies. Challenges and prospects were also examined.

Development of porous materials via protein/polysaccharides/polyphenols nanoparticles stabilized Pickering high internal phase emulsions for adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions

The porous materials (PM) were prepared by the Pickering high internal phase emulsion (PHIPE) template. Firstly, the nanoparticles named as ZHMNPs or MZHMNPs were fabricated based on zein, Hohenbuehelia serotina polysaccharides and Malus baccata (Linn.) Borkh polyphenols without or with Maillard reaction, the average particle sizes and zeta potentials of which were distributed in a range of 718.1-979.4 nm and -21.6-25.2 mV. ZHMNPs possessed the relatively uniform spherical morphology, while MZHMNPs were irregular in shape. With ZHMNPs or MZHMNPs serving as the stabilizers, the PHIPEs were prepared, and exhibited the good viscoelasticity and excellent storage and freeze-thaw stabilities. Based on above PHIPEs template, the constructed PM possessed the large specific surface area and uniform pore structure. Through the investigations of adsorption performances, PM showed the outstanding adsorption capacities on Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions regardless of dissolving in deionized water or simulated gastrointestinal digestive fluid. Furthermore, the results also showed that the pH, temperature and adsorbent dosage had certain impacts on the adsorption performances of PM on Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions.

Recent advances and mechanisms of microbial bioremediation of nickel from wastewater

The global concern over emerging pollutants, characterized by their low concentrations and high toxicity, necessitates effective remediation strategies. Among these pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products, pesticides, surfactants, and persistent organic pollutants have gained significant attention. These contaminants are extensively distributed within aquatic ecosystems, posing threats to both human and aquatic physiological systems. Nickel, a valuable metal renowned for its corrosion-resistant properties, is widely utilized in various industrial processes, leading to the generation of nickel-containing waste streams, including batteries, catalysts, wastewater, and electrolyte bleed-off. Contamination of soil, water, or air by these waste materials can have adverse effects on the environment and human health. This review article focuses on the recent advancements in environmental and economic implications associated with the removal of nickel from diverse waste sources. Physicochemical technologies employed for treating different nickel-containing effluents and wastewater are discussed, alongside bioremediation techniques and the underlying mechanisms by which microorganisms facilitate nickel removal. The recovery of nickel from waste materials holds paramount importance not only from an economic standpoint but also to mitigate environmental impacts.

Can e-waste recycling provide a solution to the scarcity of rare earth metals? An overview of e-waste recycling methods

Recycling e-waste is seen as a sustainable alternative to compensate for the limited natural rare earth elements (REEs) resources and the difficulty of accessing these resources. Recycling facilitates the recovery of valuable products and minimizes emissions during their transportation. Numerous studies have been reported on e-waste recycling using various techniques, including thermo-, hydro- and biometallurgical approaches. However, each approach still has technical, economic, social, or environmental limitations. This review highlights the potential of recycling e-waste, including outlining the current unutilized potential of REE recycling from different e-waste components. An in-depth analysis of e-waste generation on a global scale and Australian scenario, along with various hazardous impacts on ecosystem and human health, is reported. In addition, a comprehensive summary of various metal recovery processes and their merits and demerits is also presented. Lifecycle analysis for recovering REEs from e-waste indicate a positive environmental impact when compared to REEs produced from virgin sources. In addition, recovering REEs form secondary sources eliminated ca. 1.5 times radioactive waste, as seen in production from primary sources scenario. The review outcome demonstrates the increasing potential of REE recycling to overcome critical challenges, including issues over supply security and localized dependency.

Constructing ordered and tunable extrinsic porosity in covalent organic frameworks via water-mediated soft-template strategy

As one of the most attractive methods for the synthesis of ordered hierarchically porous crystalline materials, the soft-template method has not appeared in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to the incompatibility of surfactant self-assembly and guided crystallization process of COF precursors in the organic phase. Herein, we connect the soft templates to the COF backbone through ionic bonds, avoiding their crystallization incompatibilities, thus introducing an additional ordered arrangement of soft templates into the anionic microporous COFs. The ion exchange method is used to remove the templates while maintaining the high crystallinity of COFs, resulting in the construction of COFs with ordered hierarchically micropores/mesopores, herein named OHMMCOFs (OHMMCOF-1 and OHMMCOF-2). OHMMCOFs exhibit significantly enhanced functional group accessibility and faster mass transfer rate. The extrinsic porosity can be adjusted by changing the template length, concentration, and ratio. Cationic guanidine-based COFs (OHMMCOF-3) are also constructed using the same method, which verifies the scalability of the soft-template strategy. This work provides a path for constructing ordered and tunable extrinsic porosity in COFs with greatly improved mass transfer efficiency and functional group accessibility.

Boosting photocatalytic water splitting of TiO2 using metal (Ru, Co, or Ni) co-catalysts for hydrogen generation

The photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles toward hydrogen generation can be significantly improved via the loading of various metals e.g., Ru, Co, Ni as co-catalysts. The metal co-catalysts are loaded into TiO2 nanoparticles via different deposition methods; incipient wet impregnation (Imp), hydrothermal (HT), or photocatalytic deposition (PCD). Among all of the tested materials, 0.1 wt% Ru-TiO2 (Imp) provided the highest initial hydrogen catalytic rate of 23.9 mmol h-1 g-1, compared to 10.82 and 16.55 mmol h-1 g-1 for 0.3 wt% Ni-TiO2 (Imp) and 0.3 wt% Co-TiO2 (Imp), respectively. The loading procedures, co-catalyst metals type, and their loading play a significant role in elevating the photocatalytic activity of pristine TiO2 semiconductors toward hydrogen generation. Redox transition metals e.g., Co and Ni exhibit comparable photocatalytic performance to expensive elements such as Ru.

Integration of metal organic framework nanoparticles into sodium alginate biopolymer-based three-dimensional membrane capsules for the efficient removal of toxic metal cations from water and real sewage

Sodium alginate (SA) biopolymer has been recognized as an efficient adsorbent material owing to their unique characteristics, including biodegradability, non-toxic nature, and presence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups. Accordingly, in the current research work, UiO-66-OH and UiO-66-(OH)2 metal organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) have been integrated into SA biopolymer-based three-dimensional (3-D) membrane capsules (MCs) via a simple and facile approach to remove toxic metal cations (Cu2+ and Cd2+) from water and real sewage. The newly configured capsules were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDX and XPS analyses techniques. Exceptional sorption properties of the as-developed capsules were ensured by evaluation of the pertinent operational parameters, i.e., contents of MOF-NPs (1-100 wt%), adsorbent dosage (0.001-0.05 g), content time (0-360 h), pH (1-8), initial concentration of metal cations (5-1000 mg/L) and reaction temperature (298.15-333.15 K) on the eradication of Cu2+ and Cd2+ metal cations. It was found that hydrophilic functional groups (-OH and -COOH) have performed an imperative role in the smooth loading of MOF-NPs into 3-D membrane capsules via intra/inter-molecular hydrogen bonding and van der waals potencies. The maximum monolayer uptake capacities (as calculated by the Langmuir isotherm model) of Cd2+ and Cu2+ by 3-D SGMMCs-OH were 940 and 1150 mg/g, respectively, and by 3-D SGMMCs-(OH)2 were 1375 and 1575 mg/g, respectively, under optimum conditions. The as-developed capsules have demonstrated superior selectivity against targeted metal cations under designated pH and maintained >80 % removal efficiency up to six consecutive treatment cycles. Removal mechanisms of metal cations by the 3-D SGMMCs-OH/(OH)2 was proposed, and electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange, inner-sphere coordination bonds/interactions, and aromatic ligands exchange were observed to be the key removal mechanisms. Notably, FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that hydroxyl groups of Zr-OH and BDC-OH/(OH)2 aromatic linkers played vital roles in Cu2+ and Cd2+ adsorption by participating in inner-sphere coordination interactions and aromatic ligands exchange mechanisms. The as-prepared capsules indicated >70 % removal efficiency of Cu2+ from real electroplating wastewater in the manifestation of other competitive metal ions and pollutants under selected experimental conditions. Thus, it was observed that newly configured 3-D SGMMCs-OH/(OH)2 have offered a valuable discernment into the development of MOFs-based water decontamination 3-D capsules for industrial applications.

Biofilm hydrogel derived from physical crosslinking (self-assembly) of xanthan gum and chitosan for removing Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ from aqueous solution

This study aimed to fabricate a series of biodegradable hydrogel films by gelating/physically crosslinking a blend of xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) in various combinations using a facile, green, and low cost solution casting technique. The adsorption of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ by the XG/CS biofilm in aqueous solution was studied in batch experiments to determine how the pH of the solution, contact time, dosage of adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration and ionic strength affect its adsorption. A highly pH-dependent adsorption process was observed for three metal ions. A maximum amount of Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions was adsorbable with 50 mg of the adsorbent at pH 6.0 for an initial metal concentration of 50 mg.L-1. An empirical pseudo-second-order model seems to fit the kinetic experimental data reasonably well. It was found that the Langmuir model correlated better with equilibrium isotherm when compared with the Freundlich model. For Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions at 25 °C, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 152.33, 144.79, and 139.71 mg.g-1, respectively. Furthermore, the biofilm was capable of regenerating, allowing metal ions to adsorb and desorb for five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the developed biodegradable film offers the potential for remediation of specified metal ions.

Mechanism of metal ion-induced cell death in gastrointestinal cancer

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is one of the most severe types of cancer, with a significant impact on human health worldwide. Due to the urgent demand for more effective therapeutic strategies against GI cancers, novel research on metal ions for treating GI cancers has attracted increasing attention. Currently, with accumulating research on the relationship between metal ions and cancer therapy, several metal ions have been discovered to induce cell death. In particular, the three novel modes of cell death, including ferroptosis, cuproptosis, and calcicoptosis, have become focal points of research in the field of cancer. Meanwhile, other metal ions have also been found to trigger cell death through various mechanisms. Accordingly, this review focuses on the mechanisms of metal ion-induced cell death in GI cancers, hoping to provide theoretical support for further GI cancer therapies.

Cobalt metal replaces Co-ZIF-8 mesoporous material for effective adsorption of arsenic from wastewater

The high cost and low adsorption capacity of primary metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) limit their application in heavy metal removal. In this paper, Co/Zn bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized with excellent adsorption performance for As5+. The adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min and the maximum adsorption was 250.088 mg/g. In addition, Co-ZIF-8 showed strong selective adsorption of As5+. The adsorption process model of Co-ZIF-8 fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2=0.997) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.994), and it is demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent is a single layer of chemical adsorption. In addition, when the adsorbent enters the arsenic-containing solution, the surface of Co-ZIF-8 is hydrolyzed to produce a large number of Co-OH active sites, and As5+ arrives at the surface of Co-ZIF-8 by electrostatic adsorption and combines with the active sites to generate the arsenic-containing complex As-O-Co. After four cycles, Co-ZIF-8 showed 80% adsorption of As5+. This study not only provides a new method to capture As5+ in water by preparing MOF with partial replacement of the central metal, but also has great significance for the harmless disposal of polluted water.

Ultrafast Removal of Thorium and Uranium from Radioactive Waste and Groundwater Using Highly Efficient and Radiation-Resistant Functionalized Triptycene-Based Porous Organic Polymers

Thorium (Th) and uranium (U) are important strategic resources in nuclear energy-based heavy industries such as energy and defense sectors that also generate significant radioactive waste in the process. The management of nuclear waste is therefore of paramount importance. Contamination of groundwater/surface water by Th/U is increasing at an alarming rate in certain geographical locations. This necessitates the development of strategic adsorbent materials with improved performance for capturing Th/U species from radioactive waste and groundwater. This report describes the design of a unique, robust, and radiation-resistant porous organic polymer (POP: TP-POP-SO3NH4), which demonstrates ultrafast removal of Th(IV) (<30 s)/U(VI) (<60 s) species present in simulated radioactive wastewater/groundwater samples. Thermal, chemical, and radiation stabilities of these POPs were studied in detail. The synthesized ammoniated POP revealed exceptional capture efficiency for trace-level Th (<4 ppb) and U (<3 ppb) metal ions through the cation-exchange mechanism. TP-POP-SO3NH4 shows a significant sorption capacity [Th (787 mg/g) and U (854 mg/g)] with an exceptionally high distribution coefficient (Kd) of 107 mL/g for Th. This work also demonstrates a facile protocol to convert a nonperforming POP, by simple chemical modifications, into a superfast adsorbent for efficient uptake/removal of U/Th.

From nano- to macroarchitectures: designing and constructing MOF-derived porous materials for persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) have gained significant attention as an effective approach for the elimination of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in water treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are regarded as promising catalysts for activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) due to their tunable and diverse structure and composition. By the rational nanoarchitectured design of MOF-derived nanomaterials, the excellent performance and customized functions can be achieved. However, the intrinsic fine powder form and agglomeration ability of MOF-derived nanomaterials have limited their practical engineering application. Recently, a great deal of effort has been put into shaping MOFs into macroscopic objects without sacrificing the performance. This review presents recent advances in the design and synthetic strategies of MOF-derived nano- and macroarchitectures for PS-AOPs to degrade EOCs. Firstly, the strategies of preparing MOF-derived diverse nanoarchitectures including hierarchically porous, hollow, yolk-shell, and multi-shell structures are comprehensively summarized. Subsequently, the approaches of manufacturing MOF-based macroarchitectures are introduced in detail. Moreover, the PS-AOP application and mechanisms of MOF-derived nano- and macromaterials as catalysts to eliminate EOCs are discussed. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MOF-derived materials in PS-AOPs are discussed. This work will hopefully guide the design and development of MOF-derived porous materials in SR-AOPs.

Fabrication of Cu-MOF-Derived Cu/CuxO/C Bifunctional Materials for Light and Dark Catalytic Properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are self-assembled constitutive precursors and efficient self-sacrificial templates with metal ions/clusters and organic linkers from which multifunctional materials with carbon nanostructures can be derived. In this study, we synthesized a novel Cu-MOF with Cu(II) as the central metal ion through two ligands, N,N'-bis(pyridin-3-yl)terephthalamide (3-bpta) and fumaric acid (H2FA), which was used as a template for derivatizing carbon-based nanostructured materials of Cu and CuxO through doping with different materials (melamine, urea, and TiO2) in a simple and efficient one-step pyrolysis. The Cu/CuxO-1 catalyst possesses both dark-catalyzed degradation activity and photocatalytic reduction activity during water purification due to the hole-transfer ability between Cu+ and Cu2+ and its inhibition of electron-hole complexation. In the absence of light, force, and cocatalyst, it can also effectively remove azo dyes in water and effectively reduce Cr(VI) under the action of visible light; therefore, Cu/CuxO-1 can be used as a new type of bifunctional material for the removal of pollutants in water, which has a broad prospect.

A review of solid wastes-based stabilizers for remediating heavy metals co-contaminated soil: Applications and challenges

The remediation of heavy metals/metalloids (HMs) co-contaminated soil by solid wastes-based stabilizers (SWBS) has received major concern recently. Based on the literature reported in the latest years (2010-2023), this review systematically summarizes the different types of solid wastes (e.g., steel slag, coal fly ash, red mud, and sewage sludge, etc.) employed to stabilize HMs contaminated soil, and presents results from laboratory and field experiments. Firstly, the suitable solid wastes for soil remediation are reviewed, and the pros and cons are presented. Thereafter, the technical feasibility and economic benefit are evaluated for field application. Moreover, evaluation methods for remediation of different types of HMs-contaminated soil and the effects of SWBS on soil properties are summarized. Finally, due to the large specific surface, porous structure, and high reactivity, the SWBS can effectively stabilize HMs via adsorption, complexation, co/precipitation, ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, redox, and hydration process. Importantly, the environmental implications and long-term effectiveness associated with the utilization of solid wastes are highlighted, which are challenges for practical implementation of soil stabilization using SWBS, because the aging of soil/solid wastes has not been thoroughly investigated. Future attention should focus on modifying the SWBS and establishing an integrated long-term stability evaluation method.

Two-stage hydrothermal oxygenation for efficient removal of Cr(VI) by starch-based polyporous carbon: Wastewater application and removal mechanism

Cr(VI) is of concern because of its high mobility and toxicity. In this work, a two-stage hydrothermal strategy was used to activate the O sites of starch, and by inserting K-ion into the pores, starch-based polyporous carbon (S-PC) adsorption sites was synthesized for removal of Cr(VI). Physicochemical characterization revealed that the O content of the S-PC reached 20.66 % after activation, indicating that S-PC has excellent potential for adsorption of Cr(VI). The S-PC removal rate for 100 mg/L Cr(VI) was 96.29 %, and the adsorption capacity was 883.86 mg/g. Moreover, S-PC showed excellent resistance to interference, and an equal concentration of hetero-ions reduced the activity by less than 5 %. After 8 cycles of factory wastewater treatment, the S-PC maintained 81.15 % of its original activity, which indicated the possibility of practical application. Characterization and model analyses showed that the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater by the S-PC was due to CC, δ-OH, ν-OH, and C-O-C groups, and the synergistic effect of adsorption and reduction was the key to the performance. This study provides a good solution for treatment of Cr(VI) plant wastewater and provides a technical reference for the use of biological macromolecules such as starch in the treatment of heavy metals.

Incorporating Two Crown Ether Struts into the Backbone of Robust Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Custom-Designed Efficient Collectors for Radioactive Metal Ions

The incorporation of crown ether into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is garnered significant attention because these macrocyclic units can fine-tune the inherent properties of the frameworks. However, the synthesis of flexible crown ethers with precise structures as the fundamental building blocks of crystalline MOFs remains a challenging endeavor, with only a limited number of transition metal examples existing to date. Herein, 18-crown-6 and 24-crown-8 struts are successfully incorporated into the skeleton of zirconium-based MOFs to obtain two new and stable crown ether-based MOFs, denoted as ZJU-X100 and ZJU-X102. These newly developed MOFs displayed high porosity and remarkable stability when exposed to various solvents, boiling water, pH values, and even concentrated HCl conditions. Thanks to their highly ordered porous structure and high-density embedding of specific binding sites within tubular channels, these two MOFs exhibited extremely fast sorption kinetics and demonstrated outstanding performance in the uptake of strontium and cesium ions, respectively. Furthermore, the structures of Sr-adsorbed ZJU-X100 and Cs-adsorbed ZJU-X102 are solved and confirmed the precise location of Sr2+/Cs+ in the cavity of 18-crown-6/24-crown-8. This makes modular mosaic of different crown ethers into the skeleton of stable zirconium-based MOFs possible and promote such materials have broad applications in sorption, sensing, and catalysis.

Anodic Electrodepositing Bioinspired Cu-BDC-NH2@Graphene Oxide Membrane for Efficient Uranium Extraction

The challenge of removing trace levels of heavy metal ions, particularly uranium, from wastewater is a critical concern in environmental management. Uranium, a key element in long-term nuclear power generation, often poses significant extraction difficulties in wastewater due to its low concentration, interference from other ions, and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. This study introduces an anodic electrodeposited hierarchical porous 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) Cu-BDC-NH2@graphene oxide (GO) membrane for effective uranium extraction by mimicking the function of the superb-uranyl-binding protein. This membrane is characterized by its hierarchical pillared-layer structures resulting from the controlled orientation of Cu-BDC-NH2 MOFs within the laminated GO layers during the electrodeposition process. The integration of amino groups from 2D Cu-BDC-NH2 and carboxylate groups from GO enables a high affinity to uranyl ions, achieving an unprecedented uranium adsorption capacity of 1078.4 mg/g and outstanding selectivity. Our findings not only demonstrate a breakthrough in uranium extraction technology but also pave the way for advancements in water purification and sustainable energy development, proposing a practical and efficient strategy for creating orientation-tunable 2D MOFs@GO membranes tailored for high-efficiency uranium extraction.

Facile preparation of UiO-66-Lys/PAN nanofiber membrane by electrospinning for the removal of Co(II) from simulated radioactive wastewater

In this study, metal-organic framework (MOF) nanofiber membranes (NFMs) UiO-66-Lys/PAN were prepared by electrospinning using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the matrix, UiO-66-NH2 as the filler, and lysine (Lys) as the functional monomer. The membranes were subsequently employed to extract cobalt ions from simulated radioactive wastewater. The findings showed that the best performance of the membrane was obtained with a 3 % MOF content (3%UiO-66-Lys/PAN). Specifically, the pure water flux (PWF) of the 3 % UiO-66-Lys/PAN membrane reached 872 L m-2 h-1 with a cobalt ion retention of 45.4 %. In addition, adsorption experiments indicated that the NFMs had a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 41.4 mg/g for cobalt ions. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were observed in the adsorption process, suggesting that the membrane material showed uniform adsorption of cobalt ions on a monolayer level, with an endothermic absorption process. XPS analysis confirmed that 3%UiO-66-Lys/PAN facilitated the adsorption of cobalt ions through a coordination effect, with the N and O atoms serving as coordinating atoms. Moreover, the material displayed excellent radiation stability even when exposed to doses ranging from 20 to 200 kGy. This study validated the stability of the MOF NFMs under real irradiation with radioactive nuclides (60Co) and demonstrated efficient cobalt ion separation. This study has important practical implications for the treatment and disposal of small volumes of 60Co-containing radioactive wastewater for engineering applications.

Utilization of nickel-graphite electrode as an electron donor for high-efficient microbial removal of solved U(VI) mediated by Leifsonia sp

Enzymatically catalyzed reduction of metals by bacteria has potential application value to uranium-mine wastewater. However, its practical implementation has long been restricted by its intrinsic drawbacks such as low efficiency and long treatment-time. This study aims to explore the effect of electrodes on U (VI) removal efficiency by a purified indigenous bacteria isolated from a uranium mining waste pile in China. The effects of current intensity, pH, initial U (Ⅵ) concentration, initial dosage of bacteria and contact time on U (Ⅵ) removal efficiency were investigated via static experiments. The results show that U(VI) removal rate was stabilized above 90% and the contact time sharply shortened within 1 h when utilized nickel-graphite electrode as an electron donor. Over the treatment ranges investigated maximum removal of U (Ⅵ) was 96.04% when the direct current was 10 mA, pH was 5, initial U (Ⅵ) concentration was 10 mg/L, and dosage of Leifsonia sp. was 0.25 g/L. In addition, it is demonstrated that U (VI) adsorption by Leifsonia sp. is mainly chemisorption and/or reduction as the quasi-secondary kinetics is more suitable for fitting the process. FTIR results indicated that amino, amide, aldehyde and phosphate -containing groups played a role in the immobilization of U (VI) more or less. SEM and EDS measurements revealed that U appeared to be more obviously aggregated on the surface of cells. A plausible explanation for this, supported by XPS, is that U (VI) was partially reduced to U (IV) by direct current then precipitated on the cells surface. These observations reveal that Nickel-graphite electrode exhibited good electro-chemical properties and synergistic capacity with Leifsonia sp. which potentially provides a new avenue for uranium enhanced removal/immobilization by indigenous bacteria.

Pyrene-Based "Turn-On" Fluorescent Polymeric Probe with Thioacetal Units in the Main Chain for Mercury(II) Detection in Aqueous Solutions and Living Cells

A water-soluble polymeric pyrene-based polythioacetal (PTA-Py) with thioacetal units in the main chain is simply synthesized by direct polycondensation of 3, 6-dioxa-1, 8-octanedithiol, 1-pyrene formaldehyde, and mPEG2k-SH. The probe PTA-Py shows a good fluorescence response to Hg2+ ions due to the Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction of thioacetal groups to regenerate the original 1-pyrene formaldehyde compound. After adding Hg2+ to the PTA-Py solution, the fluorescence intensity (FI) gradually increases with increasing concentrations of Hg2+. Compared with other metal ions, the probe exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity, and rapid response to Hg2+. The low detection limits are 12.3 nm in ethanol-PBS buffer and 13.3 nm in water, respectively. The results imply that the simply synthesized water-soluble polymeric probe had potential applications in the rapid detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions. Moreover, the polymeric PTA-Py shows high sensitivity for CH3Hg+ with detection limits of 26.5 nm in ethanol/PBS buffer. In addition, PTA-Py can efficiently detect Hg2+ ions in HeLa cells. The results demonstrate that a valuable method is developed for biocompatible polymeric sensors for Hg2+ ions in biological and environmental samples.

Coordination-induced and tunable layered rare-earth hydroxide-complex intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer and therapy

Hydrotalcite intercalated nanohybrid has served as a vital phosphorescent photosensitizer owing to remarkable 1O2 quantum yield and high cell mortality performance. However, it is rather difficult for potential large or complex guest phosphors to directly intercalate into the hydrotalcite gallery. Hence, it is necessary to regulate the interlayer microenvironment of hydrotalcites firstly for outstanding photosensitive properties. Herein, two isomers, 5,5'BDA and 4,4'BDA, with distinctive dual coordinative features were selected to modify the layer microenvironment of the LGdH gallery and induce the introduction of prospective Gd(HPhN)3 phosphorescent complexes into hydrotalcite through two different coordination effects successively. A LGdH-BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer was successfully obtained. The results indicated that the more efficient improvement was observed from 5,5'BDA due to offering a more spacious and stable space. Specifically, LGdH-5,5'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 showed significantly better room temperature phosphorescence properties than LGdH-4,4'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3, whose lifetime was nearly 15 times longer than the latter. Additionally, the LGdH-5,5'BDA-Gd(HPhN)3 system displayed superior singlet oxygen generation in vitro under 460 nm irradiation (the quantum yield Φ = 0.48) and outstanding photodynamic therapy performance in tumor cells. LGdH presented more remarkable enhancement performance on the RTP properties of the luminescent molecules. This work provides a novel platform for designing a high-performance hydrotalcite intercalated nanohybrid phosphorescent photosensitizer through coordination induction to regulate the layer microenvironment.

Harnessing the Chemical Functionality of Metal-Organic Frameworks Toward Removal of Aqueous Pollutants

Wastewater treatment has been bestowed with a plethora of materials; among them, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one such kind with exceptional properties. Besides their application in gas adsorption and storage, they are applied in many fields. In orientation toward wastewater treatment, MOFs have been and are being successfully employed to capture a variety of aqueous pollutants, including both organic and inorganic ones. This review sheds light on the postsynthetic modifications (PSMs) performed over MOFs to adsorb and degrade recalcitrant. Modifications performed on the metal nodes and the linkers have been explained with reference to some widely used chemical modifications like alkylation, amination, thiol addition, tandem modifications, and coordinate modifications. The boost in pollutant removal efficacy, reaction rate, adsorption capacity, and selectivity for the modified MOFs is highlighted. The rationale and the robustness of micromotor MOFs, i.e., MOFs with motor activity, and their potential application in the capture of toxic pollutants are also presented for readers. This review also discusses the challenges and future recommendations to be considered in performing PSM over a MOF concerning wastewater treatment.

Fine Tuning the Hydrophobicity of a New Three-Dimensional Cu2+ MOF through Single Crystal Coordinating Ligand Exchange Transformations

The synthesis, characterization, and single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) exchange reactions of a new 3D Cu2+ MOF based on 5-aminoisophthalic acid (H2AIP), [Cu6(μ3-ΟΗ)3(ΑΙΡ)4(HΑΙΡ)]n·6nDMF·nH2O - UCY-16·6nDMF·nH2O, are reported. It exhibits a 3D structure based on two [Cu4(μ3-OH)2]6+ butterfly-like secondary building units, differing in their peripheral ligation, bridged through HAIP-/AIP2- ligands. This compound displays the capability to exchange the coordinating ligand(s) and/or guest solvent molecules through SCSC reactions. Interestingly, heterogeneous reactions of single crystals of UCY-16·6nDMF·nH2O with primary alcohols resulted not only in the removal of the lattice DMF molecules but also in an unprecedented structural alteration that involved the complete or partial replacement of the monoatomic bridging μ3-OH- anion(s) of the [Cu4(μ3-OH)2]6+ butterfly structural core by various alkoxy groups. Similar crystal-to-crystal exchange reactions of UCY-16·6nDMF·nH2O with long-chain aliphatic alcohols (CxH2x+1OH, x = 8-10, 12, 14, and 16) led to analogues containing fatty alcohols. Notably, the exchanged products with the bulkier alcohols UCY-16/n-CxH2x+1OH·S' (x = 6-10, 12, 14, and 16) do not mix with H2O being quite stable in this solvent, in contrast to the pristine MOF, and exhibit a hydrophobic/superhydrophobic surface as confirmed from the investigation of their water contact angles and capability to remove hydrophobic pollutants from aqueous media.

Cotinuous precision separation of gold using a metal-organic framework/polymer composite

Critical metals of environmental and economic relevance can be found within complex mixtures, such as mine tailings, electronic waste and wastewater, at trace amounts. Specifically, gold is a critical metal that carries desired redox active properties in various applications, including modern electronics, medicine and chemical catalysis. Here we report the structuring of sub-micron Fe-BTC/PpPDA crystallites into larger 250μm or 500μm granules for continuous packed bed experiments for the precision separation of gold. The Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA is highly crystalline and porous with a BET surface area of 750 m2g-1. Further, the hybrid nanocomposite material maintains its selectivity for gold ions over common inorganic interferents. The structuring approach reported prevents excessive pressure drop and ensures stability over time and operation in a packed bed column. Further, we demonstrate that the Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA can concentrate at least 42 wt% of gold under a dynamic continuous flow operation. These findings highlight the potential of Structured Fe-BTC/PpPDA for practical applications in industry, particularly in the selective capture of gold from complex mixtures.

Phosphorus removal from water by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based adsorbents: A review for structure, mechanism, and current progress

Efficacious phosphate removal is essential for mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems and complying with increasingly stringent phosphate emission regulations. Chemical adsorption, characterized by simplicity, prominent treatment efficiency, and convenient recovery, is extensively employed for profound phosphorus removal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal/carbon composites, surpassing the limitations of separate components, exhibit synergistic effects, rendering them tremendously promising for environmental remediation. This comprehensive review systematically summarizes MOFs-based materials' properties and their structure-property relationships tailored for phosphate adsorption, thereby enhancing specificity towards phosphate. Furthermore, it elucidates the primary mechanisms influencing phosphate adsorption by MOFs-based composites. Additionally, the review introduces strategies for designing and synthesizing efficacious phosphorus capture and regeneration materials. Lastly, it discusses and illuminates future research challenges and prospects in this field. This summary provides novel insights for future research on superlative MOFs-based adsorbents for phosphate removal.

Advances of polyolefins from fiber to nanofiber: fabrication and recent applications

Polyolefins are a widely accepted commodity polymer made from olefinic monomer consisting of carbon and hydrogen. This thermoplastic polymeric material is formed through reactive double bonds of olefins by the addition polymerization technique and it possesses a diverse range of unique features for a large variety of applications. Among the various types, polyethylene and polypropylene are the prominent classes of polyolefins that can be crafted and manipulated into diversified products for numerous applications. Research on polyolefins has boomed tremendously in recent times owing to the abundance of raw materials, low cost, lightweight, high chemical resistance, diverse functionalities, and outstanding physical characteristics. Polyolefins have also evidenced their potentiality as a fiber in micro to nanoscale and emerged as a fascinating material for widespread high-performance use. This review aims to provide an elucidation of the breakthroughs in polyolefins, namely as fibers, filaments, and yarns, and their applications in many domains such as medicine, body armor, and load-bearing industries. Moreover, the development of electrospun polyolefin nanofibers employing cutting-edge techniques and their prospective utilization in filtration, biomedical engineering, protective textiles, and lithium-ion batteries has been illustrated meticulously. Besides, this review delineates the challenges associated with the formation of polyolefin nanofiber using different techniques and critically analyzes overcoming the difficulties in forming functional nanofibers for the innovative field of applications.

Hybrid organic frameworks: Synthesis strategies and applications in photocatalytic wastewater treatment - A review

Hybrid organic framework materials are a class of hierarchical porous crystalline materials that have emerged in recent years, composed of three types of porous crystal materials, namely metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs). The combination of various organic framework properties in hybrid organic frameworks generates synergistic effects, which has attracted widespread attention from researchers. The synthesis methods of hybrid organic frameworks are also an intriguing topic, enabling the formation of core-shell heterostructures through epitaxial growth, template conversion, medium growth, or direct combination. These hybrid organic framework materials have demonstrated remarkable performance in the application of photocatalytic wastewater purification and have developed various forms of applications. This article reviews the preparation principles and methods of various hybrid organic frameworks and provides a detailed overview of the research progress of photocatalytic water purification hybrid organic frameworks. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of hybrid organic framework synthesis and their application in water purification are briefly discussed.

Preparation, characterization, and adsorption kinetics of graphene oxide/chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose composites for the removal of environmentally relevant toxic metals

This study attempted to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly bio-based composite adsorbent that is highly efficient in capturing potential toxic metals. The bio-composite adsorbent was prepared using graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS); and characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX and WAXD techniques. Metal-ion concentration in an aqueous solution was measured by ICP-OES. This article reveals that the adsorption of heavy metal ions varied according to the adsorbent quantity, initial metal concentration, pH, and interaction time. The metal ions' adsorption capacity (mg/g) was observed to increase when the interaction time and metal concentration increased. Conversely, metal ions adsorption was decreased with an increase in adsorbent dosages. The effect of pH on metal ions' adsorption was ion-specific. The substantial adsorption by GO/CMC/CS composite for Co2+, CrO42-, Mn2+ and Cd2+, had the respective values of 43.55, 77.70, 57.78, and 91.38 mg/g under acidic conditions. The metal ions experimental data were best fitted with pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics, and Freundlich isotherm model (except Co2+). The separation factors (RL) value in the present investigation were found between 0 and 1, meaning that the metal ions adsorption onto GO/CS/CMC composite is favorable. The RL and sorption intensity (1/n) values fitted well to the adsorption isotherm.

Ultra-selective uranium separation by in-situ formation of π-f conjugated 2D uranium-organic framework

With the rapid development of nuclear energy, problems with uranium supply chain and nuclear waste accumulation have motivated researchers to improve uranium separation methods. Here we show a paradigm for such goal based on the in-situ formation of π-f conjugated two-dimensional uranium-organic framework. After screening five π-conjugated organic ligands, we find that 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol would be the best one to construct uranium-organic framework, thus resulting in 100% uranium removal from both high and low concentration with the residual concentration far below the WHO drinking water standard (15 ppb), and 97% uranium capture from natural seawater (3.3 ppb) with a record uptake efficiency of 0.64 mg·g-1·d-1. We also find that 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol can overcome the ion-interference issue such as the presence of massive interference ions or a 21-ions mixed solution. Our finds confirm the superiority of our separation approach over established ones, and will provide a fundamental molecule design for separation upon metal-organic framework chemistry.

RGO-Induced Flower-like Ni-MOF In Situ Self-Assembled Electrodes for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Currently, the primary bottlenecks that hinder the widespread application of supercapacitors are low energy density and narrow potential windows. Herein, the hybrid supercapacitor with high energy density and wide potential window is constructed via an in situ self-assembly method employing RGO-induced flower-like MOF(Ni). Benefiting from the synergistic effect between RGO and MOF(Ni), the interfacial interactions are effectively improved, and the contact area with the electrolyte is enhanced, which increases the ion transfer kinetics and overall electrochemical performance. The MOF(Ni)@RGO electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of 1267.73 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. Crucially, the assembled MOF(Ni)@RGO//BC with a broad potential window and good stability employing a MOF(Ni)@RGO anode and biomass carbon cathode, combined with a 2 M PVA-KOH gel-electrolyte, achieves a maximum energy density of 70.16 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 2200.09 W kg-1, outperforming most reported supercapacitors. This hybrid supercapacitor exhibits excellent stability and high energy density, providing a novel strategy for further large-scale applications.

Introducing a Pyrazinoquinoxaline Derivative into a Metal-Organic Framework: Achieving Fluorescence-Enhanced Detection for Cs+ and Enhancing Photocatalytic Activity

Conventional photoresponsive materials have low photon utilization due to irregular distribution of photoactive groups, which severely limits the related real applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can modulate the regular arrangement of functional groups to improve the electron transport paths and enhance the photon utilization, which provides strong support for the development of photoactive materials with excellent performance. In this work, one effective strategy for constructing a photoactive MOF had been developed via the utilization of Cd2+ and pyrazinoquinoxaline tetracarboxylic acid. The structural advantages of the Cd-MOF, such as a porous structure, abundant subject-object interaction sites, and a stable framework, ensure the prerequisite for various applications, while the better synergistic effect of Cd3 clusters and the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative ensures efficient electron transfer efficiency. Therefore, by virtue of these structural advantages, the Cd-MOF can achieve fluorescence quenching detection for a variety of substrates, such as Fe3+, Cr2O72-, MnO4-, nitrofuran antibiotics, and TNP explosives, while fluorescence enhancement detection can be achieved for halogen ions, Cs+, Pb2+, and NO2-. In addition, the Cd-MOF can be used as a photocatalyst to successfully achieve the photocatalytic conversion of benzylamine to N-benzylbenzimidate under mild conditions. Thus, the Cd-MOF as a whole shows the possibility of application as a diverse fluorescence detection and photocatalyst and also illustrates the feasibility of preparing high-performance photoactive materials using the pyrazinoquinoxaline derivative.

Role of Artificial Intelligence in Drug Discovery and Target Identification in Cancer

Drug discovery and development (DDD) is a highly complex process that necessitates precise monitoring and extensive data analysis at each stage. Furthermore, the DDD process is both timeconsuming and costly. To tackle these concerns, artificial intelligence (AI) technology can be used, which facilitates rapid and precise analysis of extensive datasets within a limited timeframe. The pathophysiology of cancer disease is complicated and requires extensive research for novel drug discovery and development. The first stage in the process of drug discovery and development involves identifying targets. Cell structure and molecular functioning are complex due to the vast number of molecules that function constantly, performing various roles. Furthermore, scientists are continually discovering novel cellular mechanisms and molecules, expanding the range of potential targets. Accurately identifying the correct target is a crucial step in the preparation of a treatment strategy. Various forms of AI, such as machine learning, neural-based learning, deep learning, and network-based learning, are currently being utilised in applications, online services, and databases. These technologies facilitate the identification and validation of targets, ultimately contributing to the success of projects. This review focuses on the different types and subcategories of AI databases utilised in the field of drug discovery and target identification for cancer.

Bio-Based Aerogels for the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Oils from Water: Novel Solutions for Environmental Remediation

Contamination of the aqueous environment caused by the presence of heavy metal ions and oils is a growing concern that must be addressed to reduce their detrimental impact on living organisms and safeguard the environment. Recent efficient and environmentally friendly remediation methods for the treatment of water are based on third-generation bioaerogels as emerging applications for the removal of heavy metal ions and oils from aqueous systems. The peculiarities of these materials are various, considering their high specific surface area and low density, together with a highly porous three-dimensional structure and tunable surface chemistry. This review illustrates the recent progress in aerogels developed from cellulose and chitosan as emerging materials in water treatment. The potential of aerogel-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is reported in terms of adsorption efficacy and reusability. Despite various gaps affecting the manufacturing and production costs of aerogels that actually limit their successful implementation in the market, the research progress suggests that bio-based aerogels are ready to be used in water-treatment applications in the near future.

Polymeric Materials in Speciation Analysis Based on Solid-Phase Extraction

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Highly Selective Extraction of U(VI) from Solutions by Metal Organic Framework-Based Nanomaterials through Sorption, Photochemistry, and Electrochemistry Strategies

With the rapid development of nuclear technology and peaceful utilization of nuclear energy, plentiful U(VI) not only is required to be extracted from solutions for a sustainable nuclear fuel supply but also is inevitably released into the surrounding environment to result in pollution and threaten human health. Thereby, realizing selective extraction of U(VI) from aqueous solutions is crucial for U(VI) pollution control and a sustainable nuclear industry. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained multidisciplinary attention due to their excellent properties including large specific surface areas, tunable pore structures, easy functionalization, etc. This Review comprehensively summarizes the research progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials on U(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by sorption, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, membrane separation, etc. The efficient high extraction ability is dependent on the intrinsic properties of MOFs and the techniques used. The removal properties of MOF-based materials as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and electrocatalysts for U(VI) are discussed. Information about the interaction mechanisms between U(VI) and MOF-based materials are analyzed in-depth, including experiments, theoretical calculations, and advanced spectroscopy analysis. The removal properties for U(VI) of various MOF-based materials are assessed through different techniques. Finally, a summary and perspective on the direction and challenges of MOF-based materials and various pollutant removal technologies are proposed to provide some significant information on designing and fabricating MOF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Simultaneous detection and removal of mercury (II) using multifunctional fluorescent materials

Environmental problems caused by mercury ions are increasing due to growing industrialization, poor enforcement, and inefficient pollutant treatment. Therefore, detecting and removing mercury from the ecological chain is of utmost significance. Currently, a wide range of small molecules and nanomaterials have made remarkable progress in the detection, detoxification, adsorption, and removal of mercury. In this review, we summarized the recent advances in the design and construction of multifunctional materials, detailed their sensing and removing mechanisms, and discussed with emphasis the advantages and disadvantages of different types of sensors. Finally, we elucidated the problems and challenges of current multifunctional materials and further pointed out the direction for the future development of related materials. This review is expected to provide a guideline for researchers to establish a robust strategy for the detection and removal of mercury ionsin the environment.

Schiff base MOFs and their derivatives for sequestration and degradation of pollutants: present and future

Removal of contaminants via adsorption and catalysis have received a significant interest as energy and money-saving solutions for treating the world's wastewater. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a newly discovered class of porous crystalline materials, have demonstrated tremendous promise in the removal and destruction of contaminants for water purification. In order to improve the interactions of MOFs with the target pollutants for their selective removal and degradation, the Schiff base functionalities emerged as promising active sites. Through pre- and post-synthetic alterations, Schiff base functionalities are integrated into the pore cages of MOF adsorbent materials. To understand the adsorptive/catalytic mechanism, potential interactions between the Schiff base sites and the target pollutants are discussed. Based on cutting-edge techniques for their synthesis, this paper examines current developments in the creation of Schiff base-functionalized MOFs as innovative materials for adsorptive removal and catalytic degradation of contaminants for water remediation.

A comprehensive study for the potential removal of 152+154Eu radionuclides using a promising modified strontium-based MOF

A facile modification of a strontium-based MOF using oxalic acid was carried out to prepare MTSr-OX MOF, which was used as a potential substance for eliminating 152+154Eu radioisotopes. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize MTSr-OX-MOF. The prepared MOF had a rod-like structure with a BET surface area of 101.55 m2 g-1. Batch sorption experiments were used to investigate the sorption performance of MTSr-OX-MOF towards 152+154Eu radionuclides where different parameters like pH, contact time, initial 152+154Eu concentration, ionic strength, and temperature were scrutinized to determine the optimum conditions for 152+154Eu removal. MTSr-OX-MOF showed superior effectiveness in the elimination of 152+154Eu with a maximum sorption capacity of 234.72 mg g-1 at pH 3.5. Kinetics fitted with the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model correctly described the sorption mechanism. The thermodynamic variables were carefully examined, demonstrating that the 152+154Eu sorption was endothermic as well as spontaneous. The MTSr-OX-MOF has been found to be a significantly more effective sorbent towards 152+154Eu than that of many other adsorbents. When applied to real active waste, MTSr-OX-MOF demonstrated excellent removal performance for a wide range of radionuclides. As a result, the MTSr-OX-MOF can be recognized as an attractive solution for the 152+154Eu purification from active waste.

Prediction of arsenic adsorption onto metal organic frameworks and adsorption mechanisms interpretation by machine learning

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising adsorbents for the removal of arsenic (As) from wastewater. The As removal efficiency is influenced by several factors, such as the textural properties of MOFs, adsorption conditions, and As species. Examining all of the relevant factors through traditional experiments is challenging. To predict the As adsorption capacities of MOFs toward organic, inorganic, and total As and reveal the adsorption mechanisms, four machine learning-based models were developed, with the adsorption conditions, MOF properties, and characteristics of different As species as inputs. The results demonstrated that the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model exhibited the best predictive performance (test R2 = 0.93-0.96). The validation experiments demonstrated the high accuracy of the inorganic As-based XGBoost model. The feature importance analysis showed that the concentration of As, the surface area of MOFs, and the pH of the solution were the three key factors governing inorganic-As adsorption, while those governing organic-As adsorption were the concentration of As, the pHpzc value of MOFs, and the oxidation state of the metal clusters. The formation of coordination complexes between As and MOFs is possibly the major adsorption mechanism for both inorganic and organic As. However, electrostatic interaction may have a greater effect on organic-As adsorption than on inorganic-As adsorption. Overall, this study provides a new strategy for evaluating As adsorption on MOFs and discovering the underlying decisive factors and adsorption mechanisms, thereby facilitating the investigation of As wastewater treatment.

Advanced porous materials and emerging technologies for radionuclides removal from Fukushima radioactive water

Japan recently announced the plan to discharge over 1.2 million tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, which contained hazardous radionuclides such as 60Co, 90Sr, 125Sb, 129I, 3H, 137Cs, and 99TcO4-, etc. The contaminated water will pose an enormous threat to global ecosystems and human health. Developing materials and technologies for efficient radionuclide removal is highly desirable and arduous because of the extreme conditions, including super acidity or alkalinity, high ionic strength, and strong ionizing radiation. Recently, advanced porous material, such as porous POPs, MOFs, COFs, PAFs, etc., has shown promise of improved separation of radionuclides due to their intrinsic structural advantages. Furthermore, emerging technologies applied to radionuclide removal have also been summarized. In order to better deal with radionuclide contamination, higher requirements for the design of nanomaterials and technologies applied to practical radionuclide removal are proposed. Finally, we call for comprehensive implementation of strategies and strengthened cooperation to mitigate the harm caused by radioactive contamination to oceans, atmosphere, soil, and human health.
