Surface and interface engineering of BiOCl nanomaterials and their photocatalytic applications

BiOCl materials have received much attention because of their unique optical and electrical properties. Still, their unsatisfactory catalytic performance has been troubling researchers, limiting the application of BiOCl-based photocatalysts. Therefore, many researchers have studied the adjustment of BiOCl-based materials to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. This review focuses on surface and interface engineering strategies for boosting the photocatalytic performance of BiOCl-based nanomaterials, including forming oxygen vacancy defects, constructing metal/BiOCl, and the fabrication of semiconductor/BiOCl nanocomposites. The photocatalytic applications of the above composites are also concluded in photodegradation of aqueous pollutants, photocatalytic NO removal, photo-induced H2 production, and CO2 reduction. Special emphasis has been given to the modification methods of BiOCl and photocatalytic mechanisms to provide a more detailed understanding for researchers in the fields of energy conversion and materials sciences.

Interface Engineering in 2D/2D Heterogeneous Photocatalysts

Assembling different 2D nanomaterials into heterostructures with strong interfacial interactions presents a promising approach for novel artificial photocatalytic materials. Chemically implementing the 2D nanomaterials' construction/stacking modes to regulate different interfaces can extend their functionalities and achieve good performance. Herein, based on different fundamental principles and photochemical processes, multiple construction modes (e.g., face-to-face, edge-to-face, interface-to-face, edge-to-edge) are overviewed systematically with emphasis on the relationships between their interfacial characteristics (e.g., point, linear, planar), synthetic strategies (e.g., in situ growth, ex situ assembly), and enhanced applications to achieve precise regulation. Meanwhile, recent efforts for enhancing photocatalytic performances of 2D/2D heterostructures are summarized from the critical factors of enhancing visible light absorption, accelerating charge transfer/separation, and introducing novel active sites. Notably, the crucial roles of surface defects, cocatalysts, and surface modification for photocatalytic performance optimization of 2D/2D heterostructures are also discussed based on the synergistic effect of optimization engineering and heterogeneous interfaces. Finally, perspectives and challenges are proposed to emphasize future opportunities for expanding 2D/2D heterostructures for photocatalysis.

Enhanced photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation over Bi4Ti3O12 ultrathin nanosheets

Ultrathin Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanosheets (NS) with the thickness about 3.9 nm were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method and were used as a photocatalyst for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) to benzaldehyde (BAD). The photocatalytic performance of NS is about 8 times higher than that of bulk Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂. In-situ FTIR of pyridine adsorption and NH₃-TPD reveal that NS has more surface Lewis acid sites (Ti⁴⁺) for the adsorption and activation of BA. The photogenerated electrons (e^-) and holes (h⁺) of NS can be fully used to produce the superoxide radicals and carbon-centered radicals, respectively. The monolayer nanosheet structure of NS not only greatly promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers, but also achieves the efficient activation of BA molecules via the CO⋯Ti coordination. This work successfully reveals the surface/interface interactions between the surface active sites of a photocatalyst and the reactive molecules via using ultrathin nanosheet as a molecular platform.

Reactive species specific RhB assisted collective photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline antibiotics with triple-layer Aurivillius perovskites

Triple-layer Aurivillius perovskites degrade tetracycline antibiotic and rhodamine B together in acidic aqueous solution. Primarily the superoxide radical generated via a semiconductor assisted dye sensitization process degrades the tetracycline.

Cocatalyst engineering to weaken the charge screening effect over Au–Bi4Ti3O12 for piezocatalytic pure water splitting

The weak driving force and rapid carrier recombination severely restrict the development and utilization of piezocatalysis, but the important reason is the charge screening effect.

2D/2D Heterojunction systems for the removal of organic pollutants: A review

Photocatalysis is considered to be an effective way to remove organic pollutants, but the key to photocatalysis is finding a high-efficiency and stable photocatalyst. 2D materials-based heterojunction has aroused widespread concerns in photocatalysis because of its merits in more active sites, adjustable band gaps and shorter charge transfer distance. Among various 2D heterojunction systems, 2D/2D heterojunction with a face-to-face contact interface is regarded as a highly promising photocatalyst. Due to the strong coupling interface in 2D/2D heterojunction, the separation and migration of photoexcited electron-hole pairs are facilitated, which enhances the photocatalytic performance. Thus, the design of 2D/2D heterojunction can become a potential model for expanding the application of photocatalysis in the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, in this review, we first summarize the fundamental principles, classification, and strategies for elevating photocatalytic performance. Then, the synthesis and application of the 2D/2D heterojunction system for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts and their application for removing organic pollutants are presented.

Facile synthesis of ZnO/CuO/Ag2O ternary metal oxide nanocomposite for effective photodegradation of organic water pollutants

The current study is focused on fabrication of a ternary metal oxide nanocomposite (ZnO/CuO/Ag₂O) as an efficient and superior photocatalyst by step-wise implanting of p-type CuO and Ag₂O semiconductors onto an n-type semiconductor (ZnO) via a chemical method. The structural and textural characteristics of the manufactured samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy combined with electron dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS) and UV-visible spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of the fabricated ternary nanocomposite was tested against the photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine B (RhB) organic dyes under solar light irradiation. The ternary nanocomposite demonstrated about 99.05% and 97.38% degradation efficiency toward CV and RhB dyes under solar light irradiation in a time period of 105 min. The calculated rate constants (k, min^-1) for degradation under solar light over the ZnO/CuO/Ag₂O nanocomposite were 4.26 and 3.61 times higher than the k value obtained over ZnO nanoparticles for CV and RhB dyes, respectively. The main reactive species taking part in the photodegradation processes were •OH and ^•O₂^- over ZnO/CuO/Ag₂O photocatalysts under solar light illumination. Furthermore, the recycle experiments confirmed good reusability and photo-stability of the ZnO/CuO/Ag₂O ternary nanocomposite.

One-step synthesis of reduced graphene oxide based ceric dioxide modified with cadmium sulfide (CeO2/CdS/RGO) heterojunction with enhanced sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity

Heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient photocatalytic performance can remarkably promote the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a ternary photocatalyst, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based CeO₂ modified with CdS (CeO₂/CdS/RGO), was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method as a bifunctional catalyst for both photodegradation and photoreduction. The ternary composite exhibited a 90.04% photodegradation efficiency to ciprofloxacin (CIP) under simulated sunlight irradiation for 2 h, much higher than CeO₂ (54%). Moreover, CeO₂/CdS/RGO showed broad applicability to the photodegradation of organic pollutants, including norfloxacin (NFX), tetracycline (TC), methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), methyl violet (MV), methyl orange (MO) and reactive blue BES (RB). Besides, CeO₂/CdS/RGO exhibited a 100.00% photoreduction efficiency to Cr(VI) within 60 min. The improvement of the photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the modification of CeO₂ with CdS, which improves the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Also, the modification with RGO inhibits the agglomeration of CeO₂, improves the adsorption capacity toward pollutants and provides another nanochannel to separate photogenerated electron-hole (e^--h⁺) pairs. Additionally, the photocatalytic mechanism of CeO₂/CdS/RGO is explored. It is expected that this work would provide a promising way to construct efficient and versatile RGO-based photocatalysts applied to environmental remediation.

Emerging Hybrid Nanocomposite Photocatalysts for the Degradation of Antibiotics: Insights into Their Designs and Mechanisms

The raising occurrence of antibiotics in the global water bodies has received the emerging concern due to their potential threats of generating the antibiotic-resistive and genotoxic effects into humans and aquatic species. In this direction, the solar energy assisted photocatalytic technique offers a promising solution to address such emerging concern and paves ways for the complete degradation of antibiotics with the generation of less or non-toxic by-products. Particularly, the designing of hybrid photocatalyticcomposite materials has been found to show higher antibiotics degradation efficiencies. As the hybrid photocatalysts are found as the systems with ideal characteristic properties such as superior structural, surface and interfacial properties, they offer enhanced photoabsorbance, charge-separation, -transfer, redox properties, photostability and easy recovery. In this context, this review study presents an overview on the recent developments in the designing of various hybrid photocatalytic systems and their efficiency towards the degradation of various emerging antibiotic pharmaceutical contaminants in water environments.

Recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotic residues in water

Antibiotics are widely present in the environment due to their extensive and long-term use in modern medicine. The presence and dispersal of these compounds in the environment lead to the dissemination of antibiotic residues, thereby seriously threatening human and ecosystem health. Thus, the effective management of antibiotic residues in water and the practical applications of the management methods are long-term matters of contention among academics. Particularly, photocatalysis has attracted extensive interest as it enables the treatment of antibiotic residues in an eco-friendly manner. Considerable progress has been achieved in the implementation of photocatalytic treatment of antibiotic residues in the past few years. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments on this important topic. This review primarily focuses on the application of photocatalysis as a promising solution for the efficient decomposition of antibiotic residues in water. Particular emphasis was laid on improvement and modification strategies, such as augmented light harvesting, improved charge separation, and strengthened interface interaction, all of which enable the design of powerful photocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic removal of antibiotics.

Free-standing and flexible 0D CeO2 nanodot/1D La(OH)3 nanofiber heterojunction net as a novel efficient and easily recyclable photocatalyst

Novel 0D CeO₂ nanodot/1D La(OH)₃ nanofiber heterojunction net with in-built Ce⁴⁺/Ce³⁺ redox centers was fabricated, which exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance and remarkable recoverability.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Bi@Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

The (Bi₂O₂)²⁺ slabs undergo repeated exfoliation and recrystallization process, leaving the unstable Bi ions deposited on the Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanosheets.

Ag2S-Sensitized NiO-ZnO Heterostructures with Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity and Acetone Sensing Property

Visible light-driven Ag2S-grafted NiO-ZnO ternary nanocomposites are synthesized using a facile and cost-effective homogeneous precipitation method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties were extensively studied, confirming the formation of ternary nanocomposites. The surface area of the synthesized nanocomposites was calculated by electrochemical double-layer capacitance (C dl). Ternary Ag2S/NiO-ZnO nanocomposites showed excellent visible light photocatalytic property which increases further with the concentration of Ag2S. The maximum photocatalytic activity was shown by 8% Ag2S/NiO-ZnO with a RhB degradation efficiency of 95%. Hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were found to be dominant species for photodegradation of RhB, confirmed by scavenging experiments. It is noteworthy that the recycling experiments demonstrated high stability and recyclable nature of the photocatalyst. Moreover, the electrochemical results indicated that the prepared nanocomposite exhibits remarkable activity toward detection of acetone. The fabricated nanocomposite sensor showed high sensitivity (4.0764 μA mmol L-1 cm-2) and a lower detection limit (0.06 mmol L-1) for the detection of acetone. The enhanced photocatalytic and the sensing property of Ag2S/NiO-ZnO can be attributed to the synergistic effects of strong visible light absorption, excellent charge separation, and remarkable surface properties.

All-Solid Z-Scheme Bi-BiOCl/AgCl Heterojunction Microspheres for Improved Electron-Hole Separation and Enhanced Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Performance

All-solid Z-scheme Bi-BiOCl/AgCl heterojunction microspheres are successfully prepared via hydrothermal, NaBH₄ reduction and chemical deposition strategy. They are tested by various characterization methods, and they show that metal Bi is present after reduction and AgCl nanoparticles are successfully compounded onto BiOCl. Bi plays the role of a bridge connecting the two semiconductors of BiOCl and AgCl. All-solid Z-scheme heterojunction structures are formed successfully. The narrow band gap of the Z-scheme Bi-BiOCl/AgCl heterojunction microspheres is about 2.17 eV, which can expand the optical response range. Moreover, the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate still reaches 198.2 μmol h^-1 g^-1, extends the electron transport life, inhibits the recombination of electron hole pairs, and improves the photocatalytic activity.

Synthesis of LaFeO3/Ag2CO3 Nanocomposites for Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B and p-Chlorophenol under Natural Sunlight

Novel LaFeO3/Ag2CO3 nanocomposites are synthesized by co-precipitation method for photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and p-chlorophenol under visible light irradiation. Heterostructures between LaFeO3 and Ag2CO3 semiconductors are formed during the synthesis of these nanocomposites. Among the nanocomposites prepared with different ratios of LaFeO3 and Ag2CO3, 1% LaFeO3/Ag2CO3 shows the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB. Maximum electron-hole pair decoupling efficiency is observed in 1% LaFeO3/Ag2CO3, which causes the greater activity of the heterostructure. Degradation efficiency of 99.5% for RhB and 59% for p-chlorophenol has been obtained under natural sunlight within 45 min. Interestingly, the stability of Ag2CO3 is improved dramatically after making nanocomposite, and no decomposition of the catalyst was observed even after several photocatalytic cycles. Reactive oxygen species scavenging experiments with p-benzoquinone, isopropyl alcohol, and ammonium oxalate suggest that a major degradation process is caused by holes. Degradation of RhB into small organic moieties is detected using LC-MS technique. Further, the efficient mineralization of the degradation products occurs during the catalytic process.

In situ construction of the BiOCl/Bi2Ti2O7 heterojunction with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

Herein, a BiOCl/Bi₂Ti₂O₇ heterojunction was prepared as an efficient visible light-driven photocatalyst through an in situ hydrothermal method, and its photocatalytic properties were investigated via a comparable method.

Intimate contacted two-dimensional/zero-dimensional composite of bismuth titanate nanosheets supported ultrafine bismuth oxychloride nanoparticles for enhanced antibiotic residue degradation

Constructing a two-dimensional/zero-dimensional (2D/0D) composite with matched crystal structure, suitable energy band structure as well as intimate contact interface is an effective way to improve carriers separation for achieving highly photocatalytic performance. In this work, a novel bismuth titanate/bismuth oxychloride (Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl) composite consisting of 2D Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanosheets and 0D BiOCl nanoparticles was constructed for the first time. Germinating ultrafine BiOCl nanoparticles on Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanosheets can provide abundant contact interface and shorten migration distance of photoinduced carriers via two-step synthesis contained molten salt process and facile chemical transformation process. The obtained Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl 2D/0D composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance for antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride degradation. The rate constant of optimal Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl composite was about 4.4 times higher than that of bare Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ although Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂/BiOCl composite appeared lesser photoabsorption. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be mainly ascribed to matched crystal structure, suitable energy band structure and intimate contact interface between Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanosheets and ultrafine BiOCl nanoparticles as well as unique 2D/0D composite structure. Besides, a probable degradation mechanism on the basis of active species trapping experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, photocurrent responses and energy band structures was proposed. This work may be stretched to other 2D/0D composite photocatalysts construction, which is inspiring for antibiotic residue treatment.
